Crafting Chic Shell Jewelry with a Magnetic Touch in Maplewood Magie McGowan of Maplewood: Bridging Art and Community
Michele Spinak of Maplewood has always cherished jewelry and felt drawn to creating pieces from shells. However, it wasn’t until she faced a budgetary lay off in her job as a television producer and witnessed her mother struggle with arthritis while fastening her own necklaces, that Michele found both inspiration and time for her passion. Michele’s innovative idea blossomed into crafting modern, delicate shell jewelry with magnetic clasps, ensuring ease for everyone. Naming her business “mi shell,” she meticulously sources shells and beads for durability, creating modern, elevated pieces with a few showstoppers.
For years, Michele has collected shells from different beaches, now incorporating them into her designs and naming collections after their origin. This adds a personal touch and connects customers to these beautiful places. While praised for her designs, Michele’s greatest joy is seeing her mother effortlessly wear her creations, a testament to creativity and love. Explore Michele’s jewelry at mishelljewelry.com.
Magie McGowan is not your average tattoo artist. As a multidisciplinary artist, muralist, illustrator, and fine artist, she brings a unique perspective to her work, blending creativity with community engagement. Her latest endeavor, the opening of Home Sweet Home, a tattoo shop in Maplewood, is just part of her artistic journey.
Before moving to Maplewood four years ago, Magie started her tattooing career in Coney Island,
a place she holds dear. This year, Coney Island USA, a non-profit arts organization, invited her to create a 15-foot banner for their main building. What started as a solo project quickly became a community effort, as Magie invited local residents and kids to contribute to the banner, fostering a sense of community.
In addition, Magie is designing the official poster and t-shirt for the Coney Island Mermaid Parade, where she and her family have been invited to sit with the judges. Her whimsical designs, including a conjoined octopus, capture the spirit of the vibrant culture.
Magie is not only creating beautiful art, but she is also building connections and fostering creativity within communities.

Madison Resident Pens Book for Parents Navigating Preschool Chatham’s Rising Table Tennis Star Makes Waves
Danielle Lindner of Madison, founder of The London Day School in Florham Park, has released a book called, “Parents Pocket Guide to Surviving the Preschool Years: One Challenge at a Time.” Drawing from her 20 years of experience in early childhood education, Lindner offers strategies for navigating common preschool issues. Her motivation for writing the book stemmed from her desire to provide a toolbox of solutions to parents facing these challenges and more.
“I’ve been coaching parents and children for years, helping them through various early learning issues,” Danielle explains. “I realized that compiling these tools into a pocket guide could benefit a larger audience. Separation anxiety, biting and tantrums are just a few of the topics she addresses.
Her book has received positive feedback from both parents and educators, with many praising its practical advice, insightful tips, and humor. She has also been seen and heard as a parenting expert on morning television shows and podcasts. The book is available wherever books are sold.
Chatham’s 11-yearold prodigy, Ishaan Chathlani, is making waves in the world of table tennis. Since starting to train in Oct. 2022, Ishaan has quickly risen to competitive levels, making it to top 3 in 11 of the 13 tournaments he’s competed in.
He trains rigorously, clocking 18-20 hours per week at the Lily Yip Table Tennis Center. His efforts paid off at the 2023 North American Teams Championships in November ‘23, where he clinched one of his 4 silver medals – he also has 3 golds and 4 bronze from other tournaments.
His upcoming challenges this summer include the Northeast Championships and US National Championships. His dream is to make it to the US Junior National Team and eventually represent the country at the Olympics. He is also an honors student at Chatham Middle School and an avid violinist.
With his passion, determination, and talent, Ishaan is on a trajectory to become one of the top players in the country.
Summit Teen Organizes Car Show Fundraiser for Community Food Bank
Summit resident Bogdan Kuzmanov, a 16-year-old student at The Pingry School, combined his passion for cars with a heart for his community by organizing a Car Show fundraiser to benefit the Community Food Bank of New Jersey.
The idea had been brewing for over a year, starting as a simple concept between Bogdan and his friend Sebastien Roure-Singh of Harding. After months of planning and coordination, the event took place in April, with over 65 cars and 200 people coming out to support the cause.
With no admission fee, attendees were encouraged to donate whatever amount they could, raising over $2,000. It was a resounding success, and Bogdan hopes to make the fundraiser an annual event, passing it down to other students after graduation. Bogdan’s efforts exemplify the power of youth and the impact they can have when they set their minds to doing something positive.
If you or someone you know in Essex/Morris County is doing something interesting, send an email to Jackie.subessex@gmail.com

Ensuring Canine Companionship During Times of Crisis
By Jackie Schatell
TThe bond between humans and their canine companions is profound, and the prospect of parting with a pet due to unexpected circumstances like temporary housing insecurity can exacerbate an already difficult situation, particularly for families and their children. Recognizing this hardship, Lindsey Schroeder volunteers her time to ensure that families facing housing crises can keep their beloved dogs by their sides. Through her volunteer work with a social welfare hotel in Hanover Township, which accepts families with pets needing temporary housing assistance through a state program, Lindsey provides a lifeline to help families get through this difficult time.
Lindsey’s journey began with her involvement in Help for All, a charitable organization based in Chatham. Together with her colleague Sally Simonfay, known for her tremendous volunteer work, Lindsey works tirelessly to collect donations for families facing housing insecurity. Recently, Lindsey spearheaded a food collection and sponsorship program for the dogs of families residing at the hotel. This initiative not only provided much-needed supplies for the dogs but also alleviated the financial burden on families struggling to make ends meet.
Beyond her efforts with Help for All, Lindsey runs a dog boarding business called Retreats Boarding in Whippany. Through this business, Lindsey offers complimentary respite boarding for foster parents who need to travel, ensuring that dogs in need of temporary housing are well cared for. This service provides peace of mind for foster parents and allows them to continue their important work of caring for their foster dogs.
For Lindsey, the motivation behind her volunteer work is clear: dogs are an integral part of the family. She understands the profound impact that dogs can have on the emotional wellbeing of their human companions, particularly during times of crisis. By providing support for families and their pets, Lindsey is helping to preserve these invaluable bonds and ensure that no family has to face the heart-wrenching decision of parting with their beloved pet.
Lindsey’s story is a testament to the power of compassion and community support. Through her dedication and selflessness, she helps make a tangible difference in the lives of countless families and their canine companions. Her work serves as a reminder that even in the face of adversity, a helping hand and a kind heart can make all the difference.

Championing Sustainability A Story of Advocacy and Action
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
RRadhika Iyengar of Millburn is a passionate advocate for sustainable development, combining her expertise as a researcher and educator to promote environmental consciousness and ethical practices. With a Ph.D. in Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, she focuses her efforts on climate education and sustainable development.
Locally, Radhika is an active member of Millburn for Climate Action, a community-driven organization that focuses on environmental education and sustainable living. Through this group, she participates in events such as the Rocktober festival, Millburn’s Founder’s Day, and other Green initiatives in town, working closely with the community to promote composting, native plants, and other sustainable practices.
She is also the co-author of, “Grassroots Approaches to Education for Sustainable Development - A Comparative Study of the USA and India,” which compares grassroots environmental education initiatives in Millburn, New Jersey, and Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, highlighting collective actions like the Fridays for Future strikes, school green teams, and plastic clean-up missions. It discusses concepts like global citizenship, climate activism, and ecofeminism, showing how these stories connect with sustainable development goals. The book emphasizes education as a tool for promoting climate change solutions, benefiting schools, communities, and the planet.
One of Radhika’s key initiatives is running a nonprofit organization called Mahashakti Seva Kendra (MSK) with her sister Pooja Iyengar in Bhopal, India. The organization creates upcycled products and cotton clothes, emphasizing fair
wages and sustainable practices in the fashion industry. This endeavor not only supports economic and social well-being of local women but also promotes a shift away from fast fashion towards more sustainable, ethical consumption more broadly.
In addition to her work in India, Radhika designed the Eco Ambassadors Program at the Center for Sustainable Development, Columbia University. This program educates middle and high school students globally about sustainability and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, empowering them to make positive
changes in their communities and beyond. Radhika’s commitment to education extends globally, as the Eco Ambassadors Program attracts students from various countries, including Turkey and India.
Radhika’s work underscores the interconnectedness of global sustainability efforts. Her dedication to educating future generations and engaging communities reflects a holistic approach to environmental stewardship. Through her efforts, Radhika is not only advocating for sustainable development but also inspiring others to take action in their own communities.

The town of Kulyenchikov has been cursed with stupidity for the last 200 years. The vendor sells fish instead of flowers, the shepherd is always losing his sheep, and the postman keeps all the mail. Our story begins when Leon Tolschinsky, a school teacher, arrives to educate the daughter of the town doctor, Sophia Zubritsky. Of course, Leon falls in love at first sight with Sophia, even though she just recently learned to sit down. Dr. Zubritsky is hopeful that this teacher will be the one to break

However, Leon soon finds out that the only way to break the curse is to educate Sophia (which proves to be impossible) or allow her to marry Count Gregor Yousekevitch. Leon vows to do whatever it takes to teach her. But he only has 24 hours to break it before he, too, falls victim to the curse. Will he be successful?

Returns to a Love of Portraiture
STORY
AND PORTRAIT
BY DAN EPSTEIN
IIt’s probably hard to find a local resident who hasn’t seen her lawn signs. She’s a color consultant with a national reputation. But it’s her pastel portraits that draw our attention today. West Orange resident Amy Wax can’t remember not drawing, even as a child. She always wanted to be an artist. And she loved making portraits. “Portraiture is one of the oldest art forms,” she says, and “portraits become part of a family’s history.”
Even as a high school student, she was receiving commissions for her portraiture, and at 15 had an exhibit in the New Providence post office where she grew up. Attending Syracuse University as an Illustration Major, she refined her skills and afterward, became a freelance illustrator, working on album covers, and magazine illustrations. In 1983 she got a job as an

Art Director at NBC and pursued that for 30 years. Always the go-to person amongst her family and friends as the “What Color Should I Paint My House” expert, upon leaving NBC she opened Your Color Source, a color consulting firm now recognized by Benjamin Moore and sought out by numerous shelter publications.
Two years ago, her love of portraiture once again reared its head, and she began drawing portraits in earnest.
Young Girl, a 14x19 pastel pencil drawing on toned paper, was one of the first in her re-embracing of portraiture and was drawn using a stock photo image as inspiration. Wax loved the casual attitude of the child’s posture and the un-posed quality of the image.
Having lunch in one of her favorite restaurants, Wax met a server who seemed, “to just light up the room.” Quickly making a photograph of the woman, she later drew Hobby Server, an 11x14 pastel pencil drawing. Note not only the remarkable attention to detail and exquisite rendering of light effect but also how Wax manages to relate the exuberance of the subject.
Lewis is also an 11x14 pastel pencil drawing on toned paper. Her brother-inlaw, photographed by Wax in a casual moment over lunch, which she translates into an incredibly tender portrait of a man with remarkably kind eyes who seems totally engaged with the viewer. Wax has masterfully separated the subject from the ground through the use of color as he pops off of the page.
Finally, Friend In Shades, like the rest, an 11x14 pastel drawing was created from a selfie her friend posted on Facebook. She likes to think it portrays his casual sense of humor and when completed said “it felt like I was standing right in front of him”.
Constantly asked if she will accept portrait commissions, she says she’s too busy being a color expert to accept any. “But,” she says, “you never know.” More of her amazing work can be seen on her website and Instagram.

A Family Focus Mediating Conflicts with Creative Ideas and Solutions
BY SUE BALDANI, PHOTO BY DAN EPSTEIN
WWith a prestigious background that includes being named to the Super Lawyers List year after year and holding an MBA on top of her law degree, Melissa Cipriano is a seasoned family attorney who founded Cipriano Law Offices in 2003.
Her focus is on helping parents and children get through tumultuous situations as smoothly as possible. As a child of divorce and having been through a divorce herself, she knows how traumatic it can be. As a mom of two children, she also understands that the less contentious the divorce, the easier it is for the kids.
“I’m a mediator, and in that role, I help people come to a resolution by giving them creative ideas,” says Melissa. “I also inform them of the law and what would or could happen if they go to court.”
She’s also a parenting coordinator. “I assist in resolving issues such as where to pick up and drop off children, whether a child should join soccer in dad’s town or mom’s town or somewhere in between, or what to do when a child isn’t doing well in school and needs a tutor.”
All of the attorneys in her firm have children, and almost all are mediators too. So, when an issue arises that has to be resolved immediately, instead of having to wait a while for a court date, Melissa and her staff make themselves available to get it figured out as quickly as possible.
“We always make time for our clients,” she says.

Retirement Planning A LIFELONG INVESTMENT
BY CHRISTINE S. MAXWELL, PHOTO BY DAN EPSTEIN
PPatrick McCahill, a seasoned Certified Financial Planner™, maintains that retirement planning is a lifelong investment. Drawing from his extensive experience as a Wealth Advisor at Egan Wealth Advisors, a Registered Investment Advisory firm in Madison, New Jersey, McCahill shares his retirement planning insights on financial security.
When should people begin to plan for retirement?
Before starting to plan for retirement, it is important to establish a solid foundation of Financial Planning. This foundation encompasses essential aspects of life planning: estate planning, which determines the distribution of your assets after your passing; health care planning, which guarantees you have the necessary medical coverage; life insurance, which offers financial protection to your loved ones in the event of your death; emergency funds, which provide for unexpected occurrences; and budget/ monthly expenses, which aids in managing your expenses and income. We work with clients on this foundational plan and we collaborate with clients to develop comprehensive, long-term retirement strategies, providing security and peace of mind, building deep meaningful relationships with the clients we serve.
What are some simple but effective retirement planning strategies?
People should consider which retirement plans are available and discuss appropriate plans with an advisor, such as 401(k)s, SEP-IRAs, and IRA. After determining which plans are best for them, clients should review the provisions of each, such as yearly contributions, and look at long-term investment strategies, distribution requirements, and tax-deferred advantages.
Why is it crucial to consult a CFP® for your retirement planning?
When seeking professional advice for your retirement planning, collaborating with a CFP® is beneficial. A significant advantage of working with a CFP® is their fiduciary outlook, which legally binds them to always act in the client’s best interests. This ensures that clients are well informed and empowered in their retirement planning.
What are the key pitfalls to avoid in your retirement planning journey?
Clients should consider working with a CFP® at different life stages. We often encounter clients with inadequate financial plans or those approaching us, typically prompted by life events. Clients feel in control of their financial well-being by initiating retirement planning early, establishing a strong economic foundation, and consistently reviewing their plans throughout their lives.

ENJOY Your Own Personal OASIS
A Family Business Focused on Outdoor Living at Its Best
WBY SUE BALDANI
When Rich Cording, Sr. founded his own lawn care business in 1973, he never dreamed that 50 years later it would be so successful. Today, CLC Landscape Design has over 100 employees, and Rich is a licensed landscape architect, a certified landscape nursery professional and a specialist in designing and installing rain gardens and water gardens.

While he and his crew create beautiful designs and build walls, patios, pools, outdoor kitchens, and whatever else homeowners desire, what truly excites Rich is helping others, and that includes both clients and staff. Some of his employees have been with him from the very beginning.
“I look at myself as a symphony director,” he says. “I have people who love designing, love building or love sales. My job is to empower them, and their job is to do impeccable work.”
CLC focuses only on designing great outdoor living spaces. “We don’t do lawn cutting, maintenance or sprinkler systems,” says Rich. “We design and build. One of our other specialties is planting designs and layouts. It’s a very unique niche that we’ve carved out.”
Everyone in the company follows five core values: Service, Knowledge, Honesty, Synergy, and the Golden Rule – treat others the way you want to be treated.
The heartfelt reviews from clients motivate Rich to keep his standards high. He received a voicemail two years ago that he still has in his mailbox. “I hadn’t seen this client in 13 years, and she said, ‘Rich, I’m sitting in my backyard and want to let you know how much happiness you brought me and my children. They grew up in this pool and backyard and now I’m sitting here with my grandchildren. I can’t thank you enough.’”
Another thing Rich never expected was to have two of his four children working alongside him. “Like me, they both graduated from college,” he says. “Neither one wanted to be part of this. Most people don’t know that I went to school to be a teacher, or that my son Rich Jr. was a Navy officer and in charge of 20 men on the USS John S. McCain.”
Today, Rich Jr. runs the construction division of CLC and has a Master of Landscape Design from Colombia University. His other son, Eric, earned a Landscape Design Certificate from Rutgers University, and for the last few years has been in charge of sales and designs.
“We all love what we do and because of that, we always do the absolute best that we can,” says Rich Sr. “Our family looks forward to working with your family.”

A Essential Tips for Sunburn Prevention
As the weather gets warmer and the sun shines brighter, it's important to take steps to protect yourself from sunburn. Sunburn not only causes discomfort, but it can also lead to longterm skin damage and increase the risk of skin cancer. Here are some simple rules to help you stay safe in the sun:
Wear Sunscreen
Apply sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher at least 15 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours, or more often if you're swimming or sweating.
Seek Shade
When the sun is at its strongest, usually between 10am and 4pm, try to stay in the shade as much as possible. This can help reduce your overall sun exposure and lower your risk of sunburn.Wear Protective Clothing: Cover up with clothing, hats, and sunglasses to shield your skin from the sun's harmful rays. Lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and pants can provide excellent protection.
Be Sun-Smart
Be mindful of reflective surfaces like water, sand, and snow, which can intensify the sun's rays and increase the likelihood of sunburn. Take extra precautions in these environments.
Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water, especially when spending time outdoors in the sun. Staying hydrated can help your body regulate its temperature and minimize the risk of heat-related illnesses.
By following these simple rules, you can enjoy the sunshine while minimizing the risk of sunburn and long-term skin damage. Remember, it's important to take sun protection seriously and make it a part of your daily routine, not just on sunny days at the beach. Your skin will thank you for it in the years to come.

Maintaining Healthy Skin
TTo keep your skin healthy, adhering to a consistent skincare regimen is crucial. This means starting your day and ending your day with a gentle cleansing routine using a mild cleanser to remove impurities, excess oil, and makeup. Following cleansing, applying a suitable moisturizer tailored to your skin type helps to maintain optimal hydration and promote a smooth, supple complexion. Sun protection is another essential step, so it’s vital to apply sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 daily to shield your skin from the damaging effects of UV rays.
Alongside the fundamental skincare routine, regular exfoliation is beneficial for sloughing off dead skin cells and maintaining a radiant appearance. The frequency of exfoliation can range from 1 to 3 times a week, depending on your skin type and the exfoliating product used.
Incorporating healthy lifestyle practices also plays a significant role in promoting skin health. Adequate hydration, achieved through drinking plenty of water, is essential for maintaining skin’s moisture levels. A well-rounded diet, rich in various fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins, contributes to overall skin health. Sufficient sleep and stress management are equally important for healthy skin. Lastly, steering clear of smoking and moderating alcohol consumption can further support the maintenance of skin health.

Ophthalmologist Dr. Kurt Jackson
Shares Tips for MAINTAINING HEALTHY VISION

KKurt Jackson, MD, is a renowned vitreoretinal surgeon and ophthalmologist in Livingston. As the founder of Jackson Eye Care, he sees patients five days a week and welcomes existing, new, and walk-in patients.
• Improve circulation
• Provide relief from pain
• Elevate mood
• Assist in L/R brain balance for optimal sleep
• Gives the body the tools & energy it needs to heal itself
• Rolfing and Jin Shin Juts Practitioners
As we observe National Vision Month this May, it’s the perfect time to heed the advice of Dr. Jackson, a leading expert in eye care. He recommends three simple steps to maintain healthy vision:
Nutrition—Maintain a healthy diet and minimally processed foods. Also, eat good quality proteins such as eggs, fish, and lean meats. For non meat eaters, tofu, beans and legumes are a good option.
Activity—Be sure to exercise daily. Have a structured exercise program. If walking is your preferred activity, walk at least 30 minutes each day.
Proper Eye Care—Ensure you wear your eyeglasses when performing essential activities such as reading or driving to reduce straining your eyes.
Manage your screen time effectively by following the 20/20/20 rule. This rule, endorsed by Dr. Jackson, suggests taking a 20 second break every 20 minutes of screen time. During this break, focus your gaze on an object 20 feet away. This simple practice helps to alleviate eyestrain, allowing your eyes to relax before you resume your close-up work.
Take care of your eyes. See your eye specialist for annual check-ups and follow Dr. Jackson’s lifestyle suggestions. Healthy vision is priceless.

I’M HOOKED
BY BARRY FARBER
II’m hooked on the natural world and the infinite amount of wisdom that’s built into nature. We only skim the surface when trying to understand the symbiotic relationships that occur all around us. For example…
There is a species of acacia trees on the African Savannah called the umbrella thorn acacias. The giraffes were feeding on them and the trees didn’t like it one bit… So, they sent out a toxic substance into their leaves to rid themselves of these giraffes and the threat. But that’s not what totally surprised me when reading this in The Hidden Life of Trees… what they feel, how they communicate, by Peter Wohlleben.
The Acacia trees actually release a warning gas (ethylene) as a signal to neighboring acacia trees of the same species that there is a threat at hand. It reached them up to 100 yards away where the giraffes passed all the trees knowing that the rest of them also released a toxic substance into their leaves. What’s really happening here? Do trees, communicate underground through a various system of roots and connections? Is that the “Wood Wide Web”? The communication that goes on under our feet and all around us is something to marvel at.
This month I had the privilege to interview Cristina Zenato who is a professional cave diver and shark diver with over 25,000 dives. When I found out that she actually puts her hand in the mouths of sharks underwater to remove hooks because they brushed up against her, showing her where that hook lies in their mouth, I was just blown away.
She told me that there’s a whole different level of communication going on down there and she has removed over 300 hooks from a variety of the sharks who come to her because they’re aware that she is the shark lady who takes the hooks out.
When I asked her about fear and if she had any doing this, she told me that her preparation and her passion and love for these animals diminished the fear, totally. I also started thinking about the crazy people who think that shark fins are going to cure cancer so they leave the sharks full body with their fins cut off stretched across the shoreline.
We’ve been inundated with movies and media that portray sharks as the most dangerous predators on the planet. I’d say we are. If you’d like to see the full interview, check out Diamond Minds on Brinx.TV this month. Her message will take your breath away and leave you in awe of the natural world and what we can learn from it.
I still wonder as I walk through my yard and see two healthy trees surrounding one that is losing its leaves and can’t help to wonder if both of those trees are trying to help that one tree by delivering much needed water or nutrients to save their partner. Symbiotic relationships exist in nature and is something we can learn a lot from while working with our peers in all different scenarios.
Like the old saying goes… You can get almost anything you want by helping others get what they want… and as William Danforth (founder of Ralston Purina) had said, “Catch a passion for helping others and a richer life will come back to you”.
