Professional Soccer Player is Offering Lessons Locally to Youths
C
atherine Zimmerman of Madison, a professional soccer player that has been playing for team Melbourne Victory in Melbourne, Australia for two years, is home for the summer teaching youths to play soccer individually and in small groups. She also does this when she is in Australia. She says she “enjoys playing on a team with a common goal of winning as playing with people with a similar mindset is enjoyable.” In addition, she says she “loves the lifestyle and work life balance being a professional athlete provides.” Prior to joining team Victory, Catherine played soccer at Providence College, and for Sky Blue (which is now called Gotham FC), in Switzerland. Madison Resident Creates for a Cause
M
argaret Malishchak of Madison has turned her passion for creating stained glass art into a charitable endeavor called glass4good. She donates all of the proceeds she earns to NJ-based social and environmental justice organizations like Nourish NJ, The Great Swamp Watershed Association, and Land Conservancy of NJ, as well as to Peaceworks, CATA Farmworkers, United Help Ukraine, the Madison Environmental Commission, and Black Lives Matter NJ. She sells her work at fairs, farmers markets, and yard sales, as well as through her newsletter and website glassMargaret Malishchak 4-good.constantcontactsites.com. Since 2020, she has donated over $5000. “I am amazed at how much I have been able to donate,” she says. Margaret developed a passion for stained glass art in her 20’s and picked it up again recently. Chatham Resident Launches Sustainable Products Website
T
anu Kumar, of Chatham, is on a mission to create a positive impact for both people and the planet. She started her online store GoodsAgain (www.goodsagain.com) that offers unique upcycled products handcrafted by artisans from materials otherwise destined for landfills or oceans. Products on GoodsAgain include bracelets from old life vests, bags from woven newspapers and denim scraps, swim covers from preloved sarees, and many more unique items across categories that include women’s accessories, kids, and home. Each product provides strength and hope to underrepresented artisans from across the world, primarily women, and gives them a source of livelihood. “I adore the uniqueness and craftsmanship behind each item and how they each tell a story of their prior life before embarking on a journey of their second life,” says Tanu, who shares those stories behind each product on her website.
Local Mom Publishes Books on Kindness and Compassion

hen the pandemic forced us to stay at home back in 2020, Nadja Springer and her family had just gotten settled in the US. Her children’s biggest worry was to never see their family in Europe again - a worry Nadja took seriously, and which marked the start of her book publishing journey. “Tree Finds Friendship” is about kindness and believing in yourself; “Tree Finds Hope” is about never losing hope. But Nadja also loves to write funny stories, and her story “Oh Happy Night” will give you a new perspective on what happens at the North Pole during Christmas night; it will be published this fall. “I love being able to hide my girls in the books and send them a secret love letter in doing so,” says Nadja. She recently moved from New Providence to Mendham but adds “New Providence will always stay our home away from home.” The books are available on Amazon.
SVFAS Holds 2022 Juniors Program Graduation Ceremony
T
he Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad (SVFAS) held the annual graduation ceremony for its Juniors Program in June. Nine members of the program, all Summit residents, were honored for having fulfilled their commitment to the program as they graduate from their respective high schools. In addition, five members of the graduating class received scholarships as they embark on the next phase of their education. The members of this year’s graduating class include Amanda Brown, Mary Caffrey, Summer Cullen, Jack Detweiler, Lleyton Lance, Olivia Lawlor, Sean McCormick, Natalie Peralta, and Sarah Silverberg. Brown, Cullen, Detweiler, Lawlor, and Silverberg received the Alice Nichols Memorial Scholarships during the ceremony. The scholarship was created to honor Alice Nichols, a long-time member of the Squad who served as its President when she died unexpectedly in 2000. Lawlor also received the first Mike D’Ecclessis Award, which was established to honor the 46-year career of D’Ecclessis, who was on hand to deliver the award.

MORRIS SUSSEX SPORTS Provides an Inclusive Environment By Jackie Schatell
G
eorge Muha who grew up in Florham Park and now resides in Mendham, never imagined that the blog on high school sports called Morris Sussex Sports that he began as a hobby in 2005, would become his business and main source of income with 4 million views a week many years later. He now employees 50 people including teens, college students, parents, former newspaper reporters, and people with special needs. Aside from reporting on games, George’s team creates highlight shows, instant replays, live play by play commentary, and even trading cards. The games are broadcast on You Tube, and George’s team also produces content for the company’s website and social media channels. Morris Sussex Sports’ videos have gone on to be appreciated by other communities and he is often asked to cover games in other counties, at all-star games, pro-soccer games and more. He says his team “does a really good job creating pieces that are like network productions.” “I absolutely love what I do,” says George. “In 2019, I left my job to work here full time, realizing that Morris Sussex Sports had a strong value proposition.” George says he wanted to create an inclusive environment where teens and people with special needs could learn and work using their unique skill sets. “There is a cool vibe here,” he says.

He also wanted high school athletes to feel like celebrities. He says that with newspapers dwindling, it is important to showcase student athletes. He hopes that by feeling valued, they will go on to attend college and grad school, and to give back to the communities they live in by joining booster clubs and supporting local sports. Of all that he does, George says he is most proud of the special needs community that has been created at Morris Sussex Sports. He and his team have learned how to communicate with people who communicate differently
than they do. He finds out how to best utilize their skillsets, whether they are doing statistics, greeting people, creating content on the computer, or just talking about sports. “They and their families often thank me for giving them a great paid opportunity that they would not be able to find elsewhere,” he says. “But I feel like I should be thanking them for their friendships and the laughter and joy they bring to the business. I hope to inspire other businesses to find value in people with special needs and offer them worthwhile employment. They have skills that can be translated to jobs if a company has the right mindset.”

Local Nonprofit Provides Internships for Underprivileged Young Adults By Jackie Schatell
S
ummit resident Andrew Walker has launched Eleven+ (Elevate to Even Plus), a start-up nonprofit that is dedicated to placing young adults from disenfranchised communities into paid internships with nonprofits. The business funds hosting organizations for the cost of the internships, so students get meaningful paid opportunities that they would not ordinarily have access to. “The nonprofits benefit from the students’ skills and contributions, while championing an important diversity initiative—without “taking a hit to their operating budgets,” says Andrew. Andrew says he was “spurred into action by the Black Lives Matter movement and was inspired to provide these students with opportunities that could change the trajectory or their lives.” He says, “There are more than 30,000 nonprofit organizations in New Jersey, and many provide unpaid internships.” He believes that “many more would likely hire interns if they had easier access to promising talent.” “Internships provide valuable work experiences as well as opportunities for skill-building and networking that can improve prospects in education, work, and life for the participating students,” says Andrew. “However, unpaid internships actually perpetuate inequality because the students who might most benefit from the experience cannot afford to work for free.”

Interns must demonstrate they are of color, that they come from a low-income background, and must demonstrate achievement in academics or in community outreach.
Eleven+ sources talented intern candidates through local school alumni networks and partnerships including Summit High, Uncommon Schools, and KIPP Newark graduates, and enrichment programs (e.g. PEP Program, STAR). In addition, to ensure success, each intern is paired with a mentor to help them acclimate and when they have questions or concerns. “Having a mentor helps the interns to have a meaningful working experience,” says Andrew. The business also plans seminars with role models and provides job readiness content. Eleven+ also helps make sure that interns have appropriate work attire and transportation to and from work.
Last summer Eleven+ partnered with seven local non-profits and funded 10 student interns. For this summer, Eleven+ has identified over 40 + opportunities between Newark and Morristown, including many local organizations like ReevesReed Arboretum, Vivid Stage, The Connection, Grow It Green, Family Promise, Dress for Success, Museum of Early Arts & Crafts, Sage Eldercare, Summit Y, the Summit Housing Authority, and the Discovery Orchestra. Eleven+ funds an average of $4,500 per student. Donor contributions are welcome and according to Andrew “are an investment in smart, motivated students giving them access to a transformative, paid internships that can change their lives.” Donations fund salaries, work attire and supplies, transportation to and from work, and more. Tuesday, July 12: Science Day Explore the wonderful world of science at the Museum of Early Trades & Crafts. Campers will be discovering all the ways scientific exploration can be FUN by exploring aerodynamics with a Taking Flight challenge, and more. Appropriate for grade 1–2 and grade 3–5.
Tuesday, July 19: Architecture Day Explore the museum’s historic building to see various styles of stained glass and architecture, including our own griffin and gargoyles. Discover the differences between form, function, and decoration. Campers will create their own stained glass and take-home parts of the beautiful METC building in the form of stenciling and rubbings. Appropriate for Kindergarten–grade 2 and grade 3–5.
Wednesday, July 13: Technology Day Campers will learn the fundamentals of coding without the use of computers! At the end of the day, they will share what was created with family and friends using special coding sequences! Appropriate for grade 1–2 and grade 3–5. Thursday, July 14: Engineering Day Campers will solve problems and explore solutions using engineering principles through a series of interactive challenges. Appropriate for grade 1–2 and grade 3–5.

Using real lamb’s wool, participants will learn the old-time art of wool-felting and will make a felted toy to take home. Other activities will include fabric collages and making dream pillows or catnip toys. Appropriate for grade 1–2 and grade 3–5. Thursday, July 21: Jewelry Making Campers will create designs for their jewelry and make several pieces of jewelry crafted from “found” objects brought in from home, and from different food items—apple and orange seeds, cinnamon sticks, dried pasta, beans, etc. Appropriate for grade 1–2 and grade 3–5.

tate Fair Meadowlands is now underway and this year may be better than ever. There’s always something new to see, but popular attractions like Rosaire’s Royal Racers’ Racing Pigs and Pirates of the Colombian Caribbean are just two of the shows people really look forward to every year. “The pig races are such a crowd pleaser,” says Al Dorso, owner of the State Fair Group. The Royal Racers and are indeed treated like royalty. The Rosaire’s, he says, care for them like family and the pigs even stay in an airconditioned trailer.
They bring all types of pigs – small pigs, big pigs, slow pigs and fast pigs. “It’s a fun event, and some of the kids get to pick a pig,” says Al. “If their pig wins, they get vouchers for the popcorn stand or win a candy apple or a tee shirt, or something along those lines.” Pirates of the Colombian Caribbean is another not-tobe-missed spectacular where audiences can see pirates jousting on a steel cable tight rope high in the sky, and watch them race on the legendary Wheel of Death. State Fair Meadowlands will continue through July 10th, and tickets can be purchased on its website or through its app. So, no need to worry about long lines delaying your entry into this magical world of fun shows, rides, games and food.

Dine and Stroll Through Morristown While Learning of Its Rich History By Jackie Schatell
I
f you are looking for a unique way to spend a few hours with family or friends, you will love one of the three Savor and Stroll culinary tours through Morristown where you will dine and learn about the rich Morristown history. There are many famous historical landmarks from the Revolutionary War to the Gilded Age and statues to see. There is also a great downtown flair where guests will walk, eat, and learn.
The Classic Savor and Stroll Tours are designed to highlight the rich history and small businesses in Morristown. Each tour has a different route. There are 3-4 tastings spaced out throughout the tour with one casual sit down tasting. According to Carozza, “the food adds up to a hearty lunch meal or light dinner.” This tour is best for mixed ages and fitness levels, and the best option for families with tweens and younger.
Founder of the tours, Kathleen Carozza, a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, “believes food should nourish the mind, body and soul.” She says, “The memories of a favorite family recipe, comfort food or a treat can invoke joy and a sense of belonging.” Her philosophy is that all types of food can nourish and fit into an overall healthy lifestyle. “Marrying food tasting to a healthy outdoor activity such as walking is the perfect way to enjoy guilt free indulgences,” she adds.
The Savor, Sip and Shop Tour includes food and beer tasting as well as several shopping stops. The route is designed with specialty and boutique shopping and enough food to keep you going and enjoying the day. The tour, for those 21 and over, includes a sit-down brunch and three additional tastings. The History Hike and Graze Tour goes off the main streets into the neighborhoods where you’ll hear about local legends. This tour is best for older teens through Summer 2022
active adults (for beer tasting and pace of walking). The tour includes five tastings along the way, adding to a meal and ending with a tasting at Glenbrook Brewery or small sit-down meal instead of brewery. All tours will support Ukrainian Refugees—a 10% donation of the profits will be made to The World Central Kitchen (WCK), whose mission is to provide meals in response to humanitarian, climate, and community crises. “I was privileged to hear WCK’s founder Chef José Andrés speak in 2019 — what an amazing person. WCK is providing meals for Ukrainian Refugees. His team is always ready to help during natural disasters and manmade crises,” states Carozza. Great Design Meets Great Ideas CLC LANDSCAPE DESIGN LISTENS, INNOVATES, ASTONISHES By Janis Hashe

reat landscapes start with great ideas,” said Richard Cording, Sr., founder of CLC Landscape Design. And part of evolving those ‘great ideas,’ he continued, “is using input from members of the company’s highly experienced team.”
A perfect example, he noted, is the extensive redesign pictured on the cover. When he and his team first consulted with the Ridgewood home’s owners, preserving the existing tennis court was part of the plan. But further conversations revealed that the owners were not, in fact, using the court. Cording’s son, Rich, Jr., who is part of the design team, suggested to instead install an outdoor pavilion, water features, and a putting green. The result is a stunning, multi-use area, “that came from marrying our ideas with those of the clients,” states Cording, Sr. Continued on the next page

Great Design Meets Great Ideas CLC Landscape Design prides itself on being a company where “classic design meets cutting-edge technique,” a phrase coined by Eric Cording, who, in his sales role, is often a client’s first contact. The nine CLC designers, six of whom are licensed landscape architects, start by ascertaining what the client’s design sensibilities are. “Right now, the clean, elegant Hampton style is very popular,” Cording, Sr. said. They are able to move from 2-D plans to 3-D visualizations, a high-tech innovation that “makes the design come alive” for clients. “When the Ridgewood clients saw the 3-D video, which showed the pool house, the pavilion, and the putting green, that really sparked their enthusiasm for how well the design would fit their lifestyle,” he said.

The company stays abreast of other trends, such as incorporating lighting and technical access into pergolas and other outdoor structures, “essentially building an outdoor home.” Other frequent requests are for fire and water features. Much research goes into the plants used in the designs, ones that will flourish and add color and life for years. For example, Cording, Sr. says, “there might be 30 types of catmint, but we will pick the one that is the most insect-resistant and has the longest bloom.” Whenever possible, locally sourced blue stone is used, and boulders and large stones are re-used in the design, or kept for use in another site.
Asking questions throughout each project is always key to developing a vision that reflects what the client really wants and needs, Cording, Sr. emphasized. He shared another story of clients who originally requested a swimming pool. But conversation revealed that the owners did not regularly swim, or have young relatives visiting who did. He suggested instead creating a “gorgeous water feature,” that they could see and enjoy year-round. “The questions—and the answers—contribute to uncovering the true potential of the site,” he said.

ATRIAL FIBRILLATION Affects Kids and Adults of All Ages So Take Your Fluttering Heart Beat Seriously By Kimberly Blaker

ften, when we think of heart conditions, we associate them with age. Although atrial fibrillation (AFib) is found more often in those over age 60, it can affect people of all ages, even children. Two million Americans are affected by this serious condition, which increases the risk of health complications, including heart attack and stroke.
What is AFib, and what causes it? AFib makes the heart beat rapidly and irregularly. It commonly feels like a fluttering of the heart. According to the Mayo Clinic, “During atrial fibrillation, the heart’s two upper chambers (the atria) beat chaotically and irregularly—out of coordination with the two lower chambers (the ventricles) of the heart.” AFib, also known as arrhythmia, is not deadly in and of itself but is nonetheless a serious condition. It increases the risk of heart failure or can be the result of a serious underlying health problem. There are several causes associated with AFib. It can be genetic or may be caused by one of several heart-related diseases, previous heart surgery, sleep apnea, lung disease, infection, or an overactive thyroid. Caffeine, heavy alcohol use, street drugs, and certain medications can also cause AFib.

What are the symptoms, and how is it diagnosed? The most common symptom of AFib is a fluttering heartbeat or palpitations. Other symptoms also sometimes accompany the condition, such as: fatigue; dizziness; thumping in the chest; anxiety; shortness of breath; feeling faint or confused; sweating; and chest pain or pressure. If you do experience symptoms of AFib, diagnosis is painless and relatively simple. Your doctor will perform a physical examination and an electrocardiogram. A patient-activated cardiac event recorder can also help with the diagnosis. In the event of chest pain or pressure, you should treat it as a medical emergency because it could indicate a heart attack.
Types of AFib and treatment There are four types of AFib, although one form can progress into another. Paroxysmal AFib is intermittent and can last for just a few seconds or up to a week. Symptoms may range from none to severe. Either way, this form of AFib goes away on its own within a week or less. Persistent AFib doesn’t go away on its own. It lasts until it’s treated with either medication or electric shock. For those at high risk of stroke or if there’s another

known cause of the AFib, physicians will treat the source of the irregular heartbeat as well. Longstanding persistent AFib doesn’t respond to the above typical treatments. So several forms of minimally invasive catheter ablation are usually considered. For this procedure, you’ll be given something to relax you and a local anesthetic to numb the groin or neck area where the catheter will be inserted. Finally, permanent AFib occurs when longstanding persistent AFib is unresponsive to treatment. If treatment has been ineffective, your doctor might decide to discontinue the treatment. This form of AFib is associated with an increased risk of a heart attack. It can also impact the quality of your life. So whatever the form of AFib, take the condition seriously. If you experience symptoms, seek medical attention without delay.

Taking You to Places in the Heart Story and portrait by Dan Epstein
W
e all have places in which we are happy, content, and at peace with the world. The meticulously crafted watercolors of area resident Denis Orloff take us to his, and in that journey, it’s as if we can’t help finding our way to ours as well. As an illustration major at New York’s prestigious Parsons School of Design, he learned the ins and outs of creating images that in his very busy early career, would illustrate magazines, books, posters, and advertising. Yet it was after the birth of his first child that he put aside his brushes, and began to develop real estate. Essex County is dotted with the homes his firm renovated, or built from scratch, all of which beautifully harken to a grand time in American architecture. It was in 2006, when he found inspiration learning about the grandfather he’d never met, legendary painter Gregory Orloff. He took this inspiration to the Catskill farm his family owns and put it to work. “I have always been drawn to the light”, he says. “Light is everything. Sunrises and sunsets, the early morning light and the fading light of twilight; I believe that the depiction of light is one of the hardest and most gratifying things I can do in a painting.” Orloff believes that this special light brings up feelings of nostalgia and other deep emotions. And that it does when depicted by him in his remarkable watercolor paintings.

The Minute Man Walk
Take for instance Old Faithful, which is the tire swing behind the house at his family’s Catskill farm. It’s been years since his now adult children relentless played on the swing which sits, almost forlornly, both maybe hoping for the next generation of children, while plucking at Orloff’s heartstrings, and ours, as it evokes a nostalgia for our own childhoods, and we find it triggering our own sweet memories.

Almost daily when Orloff is at his Catskill home he walks past the former estate of renown opera singer Anelita Galli-Curci. In Galli-Curci Barn, he’s captured the now unattended to barn of the estate in the late afternoon light he loves to paint. The barn itself is a leftover from the era of the large Catskill estates in the Bel Air Mountain area. With his masterful depiction of the light and extraordinary detail in the foliage we feel the loss of that earlier time. The Minute Man Walk is a country path near Concord, Massachusetts on which the Minute Men supposedly traveled to one of the first battles of the American revolution. Once again, we see Orloff’s skill at replicating late-day light, and capturing a mood as well as a place. And we find ourselves in a happy peace, inspired by this calm moment in time. Many of these exquisite paintings will be on display at the West Orange Arts Council in an exhibit during July and August. Orloff will be at the reception on Friday, July 29th from 5pm. Check the Arts Council’s website for other times, and visit his website and find a plethora of recent work. But be forewarned: in seeing the paintings of some of his special places, you may find yourself simply aching to visit them, or your own in real life.

Vet-Approved Tips to Help Keep Pets Safe this Summer
E
xtreme temperatures and booming sounds can have big impacts on pets. With recordbreaking heat across much of the nation, the experts at Freshpet are helping pet parents with these tips to help keep their pets healthy and safe this summer.
Heat Heat stroke can occur quickly in dogs. Without the ability to sweat the same way humans do, it’s important for pet parents to understand ways to cool their pets down when temperatures rise and how to avoid common mistakes to keep their pets safe. “Just because we can manage the heat and humidity, doesn’t mean our pets can,” said Dr. Aziza Glass, Freshpet’s expert veterinarian. “Our pets are vulnerable to temperatures over 80º F. However, there are things we can do to keep our pets safe and protected from heat-related injuries and some may come as a surprise.” • Limit time outdoors: While outdoor activities are typically recommended for pets, their inability to sweat the same way humans do can cause them to heat up quickly. Limit walks to early morning or after the sun sets and stay indoors as much as possible the rest of the day. • Fill their water bowls: Just like humans, clean water is essential for helping pets manage the heat. Cool water can help cool down your pet’s body temperature. Moisture-rich fresh food like options from Freshpet - made with 100% farm-raised chicken, beef or fish and all-natural fruits and veggies - can also help with hydration. • Avoid shaving your pet: While summer cuts for long-haired dogs are OK, shaving your pet can expose his or her skin to harmful sun damage and cause overheating more quickly. Glass recommends pet parents educate themselves on how to recognize heat stroke. Heavy panting, drooling, high body temperature, increased heart rate and fatigue are some signs of heat stroke in dogs. “If you believe your dog is having a heat stroke, bring him or her indoors immediately to help cool down,” she said. “A common mistake is putting the pet in a cold ice bath. That can actually shock the system and cause quick changes in blood pressure. Instead, soak a towel in room temperature water and wipe your dog down to start the cooling process. Afterwards, proceed immediately to your primary care veterinarian or closest emergency center.” 34

Fireworks Booming sounds and crackling fireworks can send some pets into sensory overdrive. According to Glass, with an elevated ability to interpret sound frequencies audibly and physically, dogs’ sensitivities to loud noises means some celebrations can make for particularly anxious events. While some dogs hide under beds or jump fences to flee the sounds, there are ways to help make fireworks less stressful for canine companions. • Create a calm environment: Be aware if you or your neighbors plan to launch fireworks. If so, create a space to help your dog deal with the noise. A sound machine, lavender oil on his or her collar and blankets can help. • Remain indoors: Avoid taking your dog outside if you’re planning to view fireworks or set off your own. A dog’s first reaction may be to flee from the noise and search for a safe spot, placing him or her in more danger. • Stay close: Pets feel less anxious when they feel safe. Make sure you or someone they feel safe with is by their side until the fireworks are over, offering comfort, treats and affection throughout the event. T
his month I sat down with someone who is an expert on bamboo and has over 50 years’ experience with its removal, containment, and installment. You can never forget his name because they call him Bamboo Bob. Barry Farber: What are some of the benefits of bamboo? Bamboo Bob: Bamboo is beautiful, always moving, birds love it, and it creates incredible privacy. It is a great place to meditate because it’s sequestering 32% more carbon out of the air producing more oxygen than standard trees. What about bamboo shoots as food? I heard that they are nutritious if you pick the shoots right when they are new? BB: Yes. Bamboo shoots are very beneficial to your health. They’re rich in nutrients and may be associated with several health benefits, including increased weight loss, improved digestive health, and decreased cholesterol levels. However, it’s important to cook them properly to reduce their number of toxic compounds. People can enjoy them in moderation as part of a healthy, wellrounded diet. BF: Seems that people use a lot of chemicals to keep their lawn green, which we know has long term negative effects on our health. Is there a simple and natural way that works to get rid of what people call undesirable weeds? BB: You can put vinegar, a small amount of salt, and dish soap in a bottle and spray it on the weeds and that should do the trick. BF: What got you into bamboo as a profession that your passionate about? BB: I have been a horticulturist since 1974. I have studied and grown thousands of species of tropical and subtropical plant material. This has evolved specifically into focusing on bamboo.
