Baby Photographer GIVES BACK to Babies Who Need It Most

Photographer Jordan Rosner of Jordan Elyse Photography in Millburn donates 10% of every photo shoot to Baby2Baby, a charitable organization that provides children living in poverty with diapers, clothing, and necessities. Jordan says she does this because she loves babies and feels it is important to give back to those who need it most.

Jordan, the owner of Jordan Elyse Photography for 22 years, says her interest in this charity stems from her love of babies. Her business specializes in maternity shoots, newborns, and first birthday cake smashes while following a child through the first year of their life.

“I am drawn to any baby and always have been,” she says. “As a photographer, I like the challenge of molding, wrapping, and getting babies to sleep, so they can be photographed.”

Led by Co-CEOs Kelly Sawyer Patricof, and Norah Weinstein, Baby2Baby is a mega diaper bank and nonprofit organization providing essential items to children in need across the country. In the last 11 years, Baby2Baby has distributed over 270 million items to children in homeless shelters, domestic violence programs, foster care, hospitals, and underserved schools, as well as children who have lost everything in the wake of disaster. In 2023, the charity reached one million children, in over 200 cities, across all 50 states, and distributed 30 million diapers. In response to the baby food shortage, Baby2baby distributed 4.1 million bottles of formula into the hands of babies across the country. In addition, Baby2Baby sent over two million emergency supplies to families who lost everything in the devastating Kentucky floods

and truckloads of bottled water to families impacted by the Mississippi water crisis who couldn’t provide clean water for their children. After Hurricane Ian, in only two weeks’ time, Baby2Baby distributed 5.1 million essentials to families in Florida and says it will provide ongoing support as they work to rebuild their lives.

Baby2Baby provides children living in poverty with diapers, clothing and all the basic necessities that every child deserves.

Learn more at: Baby2Baby.org

Jordan says she enjoys working with her clients who are always supportive and trusting. “Many leave the studio calling me the ‘baby whisperer,’ she says. Jordan said she feels extremely lucky to wake up every day doing what she loves and in return being able to give back to those in need. In the upcoming year she plans to invite families to bring a pack of diapers to their session to donate to Baby2Baby.

Teens Create Gender Inclusivity Organization

Agroup of local teens have started a movement called Campaign for Gender Inclusivity (C4GI), with a motto to Educate, Advocate, Create. The organization comprises middle and high school students with many of the members identifying as LGBTQ+, and others involved because they are simply passionate about making their own schools and communities more kind and inclusive. Since its February 2021 inception, the team has expanded and recruited members from 11 different public and private schools in NJ, and has started a chapter in India.

According to Vice President of C4GI, Tara Khurana, of Summit, the organization started with middle school GSA leaders wanting to make their teachers more aware about respecting pronouns. Using their motto Educate, Advocate, Create, the C4GI team first works to educate students, teachers, parents, legislators, and anyone who wants to learn. They

Inclusivity is always looking for new members! If you are a teen, LGBTQ+ or not, we’d love to have you! No experience with community organizing is required. hold talks and share resources and materials to provide people with the skills needed to advocate for transgender and non-binary students. The members hope that there is a chain reaction with the newly educated people going on to educate other new people. The team also hopes that the newly educated individuals create safe spaces and more accepting environments in their schools.

Tara says, “I joined C4GI because I wanted to help create ways for people to make change in their communities, stand up for what I believe in, and create safe spaces for LGBTQ+ teenagers.”

She adds, “All it takes is one person to start the conversation. It is important to make sure trans voices are heard.”

Since the group was established, it has fundraised at eight different fairs and pride events, curated many resources for students to help educate their teachers on gender and pronouns, held an online workshop where they demonstrated how to start conversations with administrators, and held countless LGBTQ+ teen support groups, and more.

C4GI currently holds weekly meetings on Tuesdays from 8-9 pm, and LGBTQ+ Teen Support Groups on Sundays from 7-9 pm. The members also have many upcoming events planned, which can be found on the website: c4gi.github.io.

C4GI has also begun the process of becoming a non-profit organization, which will help them to fundraise and continue furthering their mission.

Salsa Under the Stars

Dance the night away with the spirited sounds of salsa, merengue and more from David Cedeño and His Orchestra. Together with his orchestra, David plays a large variety of music such as Latin salsa, Latin jazz, meringue, ballads, and waltzes. Still believing that music was “made to be shared”, David rearranged some popular English hits by adding a Latin salsa beat while still keeping the original lyrics in English. These English titles include Lady in Red, Will You Love Me Tomorrow, Somewhere, & Sealed with a Kiss. His initiative opened the gate for other Latin performers to attempt a crossover and introduce their music to America.

When The Art is Just Plain Fun!

When The Art is Just Plain Fun!

We’ve gotta wonder if when he was growing up in Montclair, people imagined the flights of fantasy that Dan Fenelon would take them on. Educated at both the Art Students League in New York, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, his Art career at first took a somewhat traditional corporate approach. He worked in the graphic design department of a large Pharmaceutical company, as an illustrator for a sports marketing concern, and then as an illustrator for Toys Are Us.

It was in 2010, answering a call for mural artists from Arts Unbound, that the volcano of magic erupted. Barbara Reuther from Morris Arts engaged Fenelon to do murals in schools, which led to Laura Urbanelli, the executive director of the Montclair Museum, to commission a large mural displayed for two years that put him prominently on the regional Art scene radar. Now, dividing his time between mural commissions, Art-centric corporate team-building projects in partnership with his wife Kadie Dempsey through their company Core Creative Placemaking, and exhibiting his work in galleries, his work is very visible and delighting viewers.

Bird In Hand, a 56x80 acrylic on canvas painting, which started as a doodle in his sketchbook, is currently on display in an exhibit in Gallery 491 in Montclair. Taking much of the symbolism from mythology, Fenelon likes to think of it as having a subconscious narrative, though, with no concrete story. In it, his illustration background comes into play, and the viewer’s eye can’t help following a path around the painting.

Fenelon loves to create three dimensional works, and here, an unusually large one, Supercat was constructed with the aid of sculptor Bob Richardson. A seven and a half foot tall piece made of construction material and acrylic paint, which echos Superman, and offers what Fenelon refers to as “Catitude”. It’s both imposing, and friendly. Fenelon likes when viewers are moved to touch it while experiencing the sculpture.

In a mural on the Luna Stage building in West Orange, Luna Moon, we are engaged in a tribute with many references. The open arms welcome the viewer to the community, which is sometimes called “Hat City” since it was formerly the home to the largest aggregation of hat-making factories in the US. The theatrical imagery, as well as the moon, of course reference the Luna Stage, housed in the building, and uses a color palette Fenelon believes is uplifting to the urban community. We are amused by how he has incorporated the lighting fixtures on the wall into the mural in the flowers.

More of Fenelon’s work can be seen at Gallery 491, until July 28, from 7am-7pm. Likewise at the FSA Gallery in Frenchtown, the last two weeks of July and the first two weeks of August where many small works and prints will be available, and of course online. Prepare to be delighted.

Take in a Shakespeare Play

And A Nightingale Sang…, by C.P. Taylor and Directed by Bonnie J. Monte, will be playing at the Shakespeare Theater of NJ this summer. This endearing play about a middle-class family in England during the Blitz of WWII is, at turns, hilarious, romantic, moving, and inspiring; a celebration of life in the midst of destruction, with fortitude, music, and humor as the protagonists’ main weapons against despair.

The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey (STNJ), originally called the “New Jersey Shakespeare Festival,” is one of the leading Shakespeare theaters in the nation, serving approximately 75,000 adults and children annually. It is New Jersey’s only professional theater company dedicated solely to Shakespeare’s canon and other classic masterworks. Through its productions and education programs, the company strives to illuminate the universal and lasting relevance of the classics for contemporary audiences.

Creating BEAUTIFUL HOMES While Fostering Strong COMMUNITY TIES

A ServiceOriented Business That Earns an A+

From the time his neighbor, a carpenter, hired him at 14 as a summer helper, Ty Monk has loved making houses look their best. In 2007, he founded Monk’s Home Improvements and added more services as he continued to improve his skills. He also brought in his brother, Trevor, as co-owner in 2009.

“We maintain houses as well as remodel and upgrade them,” says Ty. “We look at what our customers are asking for and add that to our business plan. It’s literally the reason we opened our showrooms in Morristown and Fanwood. We were doing tons of kitchens and bathrooms, and it was challenging for our customers to pick out their tile from one place, get their plumbing fixtures from another, and their cabinetry and flooring from another.”

Having these choices and more in one place saves a lot of time. Since the showrooms are staffed with talented designers, customers have complimentary professional assistance when making decisions.

Monk’s also has a process to minimize project delays by ensuring all materials are in their warehouse and ready to go before jobs begin. Projects then progress smoothly without any unexpected stoppages.

Their team of highly skilled tradesmen all specialize in their services, so one person will focus on tiling, another on flooring, and yet another on painting. In addition, they have built long-term relationships with many of the plumbers, electricians, and other subcontractors they use to guarantee continuous, high-quality work.

“We work with almost 7000 people a year, and we made a conscious decision that our niche would be customer service and be above and beyond the best,” he says.

Due to this dedication to service, the business has an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau and has won many awards, including the Angie’s List Super Service Award and Best of Houzz in customer service, for seven years in a row.

“I’m very proud of that,” says Ty. “I know the company is a reflection of me, but the awards are also a reflection of our employees and what they put in.”

Ty is also a big believer in giving back. Over the years, the business has issued scholarships, donated painting services to schools, and served food to people in need. “I grew up in Maplewood and was part of a very active youth group at one of the churches in town. It focused on volunteering, such as visiting people’s homes and fixing them for free. As I got older and life got busier, volunteering became harder. So, bringing it into the company was a way to stay in touch with my roots and be who I am, but do it through a different venue.”

He says the real magic at Monk’s comes from the people involved. “Everybody focuses on giving their best, and we do it as a team.”

HEALTHY HABITS to Protect Your Skin

As the first line of defense against the outside world, skin is the body’s largest organ and takes on an important role in maintaining overall health. While products like sunscreen and moisturizer can help skin thrive, healthy skin starts from within where food and beverage choices can play a key role.

One example is grapes: Emerging research suggests consuming grapes may help protect healthy skin even when exposed to UV light, which is known to be damaging. A study published in the journal “Antioxidants,” in which people consumed 2 1/4 cups of grapes every day for two weeks, showed increased resistance to sunburn and reduced markers of UV damage at the cellular level.

This study reinforced previous and similar findings published in the “Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.” Grapes are also a hydrating food with 82% water content; hydration is essential to healthy skin. To take care of your skin, consider these skin-friendly health tips.

Fill Your Plate with Healthy, Hydrating Foods

Nutritious foods, including fruits and vegetables, can play an important role in achieving an overall balanced diet with adequate hydration. Enjoying the goodness of fresh or frozen Grapes from California can provide extra hydration and a boost of beneficial antioxidants and other polyphenols that help protect the health and function of the body’s cells, including those in the skin.

Drink water throughout the day, and for added flavor, infuse with fruits like frozen grapes. Simply rinse, pat dry, remove from the stems and freeze the grapes for 2 hours in a single layer on a sheet pan for flavorful ice cube replacements.

Protect Skin While Outdoors

While perhaps an obvious step to some, one of the most direct ways you can protect skin is by applying sunscreen—most experts recommend 30 SPF or higher—before heading outdoors and reapplying every 1-2 hours. Additionally, consider wearing protective clothing, such as a hat large enough to shade your face and neck. If you plan to spend extended time in the sun, opt for a lightweight, long-sleeve shirt and pants for maximum skin coverage.

Manage Stress

Whether it’s caused by a lengthy to-do list or general anxieties, stress can negatively impact skin health while even exacerbating certain conditions. Managing stress can offer a reprieve in multiple ways, including encouraging healthier skin. Some simple ways to relieve stress include exercising, getting enough sleep, lightening or limiting your workload, scaling back on to-do lists and making time for things you enjoy.

Recognizing HEAT EXHAUSTION:

Key Symptoms and Actions to Take

As temperatures rise during the summer months, it’s crucial to stay vigilant about the potential risks of heat exhaustion. Heat exhaustion occurs when the body overheats due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures, leading to dehydration and a diminished ability to cool down. Recognizing the signs of heat exhaustion is essential for prompt intervention and prevention of more severe heat-related illnesses.

Recognizing the early signs of heat exhaustion is vital for preventing more serious heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke. Stay vigilant, listen to your body, and take immediate action if you or someone around you exhibits symptoms of heat exhaustion. By staying hydrated, seeking shade, and practicing appropriate selfcare, you can enjoy the summer while keeping yourself safe and healthy.

SIGNS OF HEAT EXHAUSTION:

• Profuse sweating and pale, clammy skin.

• Fatigue, weakness, and dizziness.

• Headache and nausea.

• Muscle cramps and rapid heartbeat.

• Cool and moist skin despite the heat.

• Fainting or feeling lightheaded.

ACTIONS TO TAKE:

• Move to a cooler area and rest.

• Drink cool water or sports drinks.

• Loosen or remove tight clothing.

• Apply cool, wet cloths to the skin.

• Use a fan or seek airconditioned environments.

• Avoid excessive physical exertion.

Foot & Ankle Safety Tips FOR THE SUMMER MONTHS

From the beach to the backyard, taking care of your feet and ankles in summer is essential. “Nothing ruins summer fun faster than a problem with your feet. However, a few smart precautions can help keep you healthy and safe,” says Gretchen Lawrence, DPM, AACFAS, a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon and an associate member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS). Some of the most common summer risks to feet and how to avoid them are shared here.

Many people go barefoot every summer, and consequently will sustain cuts and puncture wounds. To prevent injury and infection, wear shoes whenever possible and get vaccinated against tetanus. If you do get a puncture wound, see a foot and ankle surgeon within 24 hours and don’t swim until it’s healed. Bacteria in oceans and lakes can cause infection.

To prevent contact with bacteria and viruses that can cause athlete’s foot, plantar warts and other problems always wear flip flops or other footwear in locker rooms and on pool decks.

Don’t overlook your feet during your sun protection routine. Feet get sunburned

Award-Winning

too, and melanoma on the foot or ankle is more likely to be misdiagnosed than on any other part of the body. A study published in “The Journal of Foot & Ankle Surgery” reported the overall survival rate for melanoma of the foot or ankle is just 52%, in sharp contrast to the 85% survival rate for melanomas on other areas of the body. Dr. Lawrence notes, “If you spot abnormal moles or pigmented skin, including under toenails, visit a foot and ankle surgeon. Early detection and treatment could save your life.”

Summer sports can lead to arch pain, heel pain, ankle sprains and other injuries. Proper footwear with heel cushioning and arch support is essential, particularly on uneven surfaces, such as sandy beaches or hiking trails. If injury occurs, use the RICE approach: rest, ice, compression, and elevation to ease pain and swelling.

Sitting for long stretches can increase the risk of dangerous blood clots. “Whether road tripping or flying, regularly stretch your legs and pump your feet to circulate

blood. Wearing compression socks for longer travel is also a good idea,” says Dr. Lawrence.

If you have diabetes, prolonged hot and humid weather can lead to numerous foot woes. Any type of skin break has the potential to get infected if it isn’t noticed right away, and exposure can cause dry, cracking skin. Inspect your feet daily and wear closed shoes whenever possible.

Swelling is another hot-weather risk, potentially making shoes fit tighter which can cause blisters. Compression stockings may not sound appealing in hot temperatures, but they can reduce swelling and help prevent poor circulation. Finally, never go barefoot in summer. Impaired nerve sensation can make it hard to detect just how hot surfaces are. Just a few minutes walking barefoot on pavement can cause third-degree burns.

A Guide to Stress Relief Through Meditation

In the fast-paced and demanding world we live in, stress has become an alltoo-common companion. However, there is a powerful tool that can help us find solace amidst the chaos: meditation. This ancient practice has been embraced by people worldwide for its profound ability to reduce stress and cultivate inner peace.

Begin by finding a quiet and comfortable space where you can unwind and disconnect from external distractions. This could be a cozy corner of your home or a secluded spot in nature. Ensure that the environment is peaceful and conducive to relaxation.

Choose a posture that allows you to be both relaxed and alert. You can sit crosslegged on a cushion or in a chair with your feet planted firmly on the ground. Keep your spine upright but not rigid,

allowing energy to flow freely throughout your body.

Close your eyes gently and take a few deep breaths. Inhale slowly through your nose, feeling the air fill your lungs, and exhale through your mouth, releasing any tension. These initial breaths signal to your body that it’s time to unwind and enter a state of calm. Direct your attention to your breath, observing its natural rhythm. Notice the sensations as you inhale and exhale—the rise and fall of your abdomen, the coolness of the air entering your nostrils. As thoughts arise, acknowledge them without judgment and gently guide your focus back to your breath.

Meditation is not about emptying the mind but rather cultivating a mindful presence. Embrace the present moment, allowing thoughts, emotions, and

sensations to come and go without clinging to them. View them as passing clouds in the sky of your consciousness, acknowledging their presence but not attaching significance to them.

When beginning your meditation practice, start with short sessions of 5-10 minutes. As you become more comfortable, gradually increase the duration. Consistency is key, so aim to practice daily, even if it’s for a few minutes.. Embrace the journey, knowing that each moment spent in meditation contributes to your overall well-being.

Nature’s Way

Leonardo da Vinci once said, “Nature is the source of all true knowledge.” Have you ever got burnt out from your work or couldn’t get back into the groove where you are operating on all cylinders? Over the years, we all go through changes in our environment, sometimes leaving us feeling unmotivated or struggling to find the creative juices to take action and move the needle. Anytime I need energy or a fresh way to look at things, I turn my focus back to nature and have never been disappointed. I want to share three ideas that help me get rejuvenated and back on track:

1. BREATHING AND MEDITATION.

There is a saying that “still waters run deep.” When the water is still, all the silt settles to the bottom, and you can see clearly. This is like how the mind works. When one sits still to rest or meditate, one’s mind becomes clear, and new visions and direction can settle. It helps you clarify what is important and the best actions for moving forward. ‘Still waters run deep’ represents the tremendous power one can gain from quieting the mind and sitting still in a mild meditation. Try this, even if it’s just a 10 min break from work once during the day. First, find a quiet place to rest—a quiet room or outside where you’re away from noise. Then sit or stand with a comfortable posture. Someone once told me to sit like a general on horseback, maintaining the best posture. This will allow you to breathe naturally and get centered. Breathe in through your nose for 4 seconds and exhale through your mouth for 5 seconds or more. Do this and concentrate on breathing in and out; eventually, there will be no thought. Your goal will be to attain what the Japanese call “Mushin,” which means no mind. After a while, fresh ideas and new understandings flood your brain. My most valuable ideas and insights on what I should be doing with my business were generated during these mini-meditations during the day. These breaks will bring you back fresh with a renewed spirit and new approaches to your work and life.

2. GETTING CLOSE TO THE EARTH.

Many times, I will go out in the yard and walk around or stand in one place barefoot. I never knew why it made me relax and feel more energy until I started researching the subject. I found out it was called “Grounding.” “When walking barefoot, our body absorbs free ions from the Earth’s surface, which act as antioxidants. These antioxidants enhance our health and lead to positive feelings in the body. Grounding offers many health benefits, including improved sleep, reduced inflammation, improved tissue and cell repair, enhanced blood flow, increased

heart rate variability, and improved electrical activity in the brain. In addition, walking barefoot on the ground releases endorphins. This can improve our mood and counteract mental illnesses like depression and anxiety. Walking barefoot also reconnects us with nature, which boosts our mental and physical states in other ways. As such, Earth’s natural healing energy should never be overlooked!” (Global Viewpoint, Feb. 16, 2023)

3. WALK IN THE WOODS.

Since I was nine months old, I spent my summers at a camp in the Pocono Mountains. My mom and dad worked at the camp, and I was lucky enough to be surrounded by so much natural beauty. Back then, I would hike for hours deep in the woods. Today I still love that walk in the woods. When you’re on a path in the forest where it’s quiet you start to forget about the daily pressures, and you begin to clear your mind and feel whole. If you want to learn about the vast benefits of this exercise, google “benefits of walking in the woods.” While we breathe in the fresh air, we breathe in phytoncides, airborne chemicals that plants give off to protect themselves from insects. Phytoncides have antibacterial and antifungal qualities, which help plants fight disease. When people breathe in these chemicals, our bodies respond by increasing the number and activity of a type of white blood cell called natural killer cells or NK. These cells kill tumor- and virus-infected cells in our bodies. One study showed increased NK activity from a 3-day, 2-night forest bathing trip that lasted more than 30 days. Japanese researchers are exploring whether forest exposure can help prevent certain kinds of cancer. (Immerse yourself in a forest for better health/Department of Environmental Conservation)
