Chatham Resident’s Helping Hands Program Supports Those in Need By Jackie Schatell

I

n March of 2020, Joann Carroll, a 25year resident of Chatham, launched Helping Hands of Chatham (HHOC) aka Weekend Meals for Chatham Students in Need, with a goal of raising money to provide $25 ShopRite grocery gift cards to families in need. Since then, HHOC has donated over $60,000 in gift cards to students on the free lunch program supporting them on weekends and during the summer, and to other families in the community and beyond experiencing food insecurity.

The benefits have been vast – families have been able to give back, those in need have received aid, and the local ShopRite has been supported. Later, when cards for purchasing prescription drugs became available, CVS gained support too. Joann notes that the gift cards go a long way when purchased from HHOC because ShopRite offers the group a 5 percent discount for every $1,000 spent. She says that the demand for food assistance in 2021is 50 percent higher than 2020 levels, and at the same time, available food resources are 75 percent less available than 2020 levels. According to Joann, donations are needed now, more than ever. In addition, Joann says, “Families in need should not be shy about accepting help. After all, we are all in this together and Chatham residents look out after one another.”

Donations Help Refugees and the Needy By Jackie Schatell

S

ally Simonfay of Chatham believes that small acts of kindness have the potential to make a huge difference to people in need. She has seen it happen first-hand. For the past four years, Sally has been volunteering with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) as the Basic Needs Coordinator, where she helps refugees seeking asylum. Each time she is assigned a family to help, she contacts her fellow Chatham residents, who “always rise to the challenge.” Some donate clothes, food, money, or hygiene items, while others bake cookies, hold supply drives, or help organize donations. She says she is grateful for every bit of help, large or small. “When the refugees come to the US, they have nothing,” says Sally. “They need food, shelter, clothing, compassion and so much more. Many were abused or lost family members to violence in their countries. They really need our help.” Sally is the “official greeter” to many refugee families and “feels like Santa Claus” when delivering items to them. When the families first arrive to the US, she and sometimes her two sons, measure the refugees for clothing and shoes. They also talk with them about their lives prior to coming to the US. “It is heart-breaking to hear their stories,” she says. She also helps senior citizens, the homeless, and food insecure residents in Elizabeth. Every Monday, Sally and some friends set up tables on Broad Street and help serve free meals. She also places clothing and hygiene items

to kindness. Receiving the items is a game changer for them.”

She says, “They are flabbergasted that people can be so generous. They live in crime-ridden areas and are just not used

Health and Wellness

Discover a Place to Get Well Mental Health Services for Everyone By Sue Baldani

D

iscovery Wellness Center in Cedar Knolls has therapists that can help its clients live happier, more productive lives. One of them, Dr. Jennifer Sumerlin, talks about her commitment to improving others’ mental health.

Why did you choose a career in mental health?

What are your specialties? Before COVID, I was working heavily with children and that became my specialty, but I also deal with families, individuals and couples. I help with depression, anxiety, grief, eating disorders, LGBT issues and more. Dr. Jennifer Sumerlin

I enjoy hearing about people’s problems and being able to help them see things a little bit differently. I like being instrumental in navigating that.

When did you join Discovery Wellness Center? I joined at the end of 2013. I had just finished my Master’s and was getting ready to do my doctorate in counseling psychology, with an emphasis on social justice, which I obtained in 2017. Everyone here basically helps each other and lets you know you’re not alone. We are a family; there’s no competition.

Why is it so important for people to reach out when they’re having mental health issues?

When you are in your own bubble, you are basically a victim of your own thoughts. That is the worst place to be. You have to learn to talk to people—at least people you trust. And trusting them is not about wanting them to tell you what you want to hear, but instead having them help you get what you need. Sometimes, you just need someone to listen.

Explore a New Career or Boost Credentials With a Certificate from Berkeley College By Cynthia Burns

B

erkeley College has empowered the lives of students for 90 years. In its quest to continue creating relevant learning opportunities, the college is expanding its continuing education certificate programs. Among the new offerings are artificial intelligence and machine learning, business analytics, digital and social media, and an entrepreneurship program. They are in addition to certificate programs in interior design, health and medical careers, law enforcement and public safety, social justice, and legal and compliance studies. There are many advantages to Berkeley’s certificate programs. “They are designed to engage students with specialized skills that they can apply immediately,” says Marianne Vakalis, Ed.D., dean, School of Professional Studies. “Most entail completing four or five courses, which can be accomplished in two semesters.” The certificate programs are ideally suited to the demands of the marketplace, particularly in healthcare. They provide students an opportunity to try a new area of study if

they are considering a career change or to add another facet to their credentials. “The courses offered in Berkeley’s certificate programs have always been credit bearing,” says Vakalis. “The credits are applied should a student decide to enroll in a degree program at the college.” Apart from courses that require in-person labs, as do several in design and healthcare, certificate requirements can be completed online. Berkeley College Online® was one of the first college online programs worldwide to be certified for excellence by the United States Distance Learning Association. The certificate programs are offered through the Woodland Park campus and Berkeley’s three other locations.

New Florham Park Pet Store Has It All By Janis Hashe, photos by Dan Epstein

Pet parents, rejoice! From basset hounds to bearded dragons, from kittens to cockatiels, the new Pet Supplies Plus in Florham Park will tend to your beloved pets’ needs with the same compassionate and knowledgeable care owners Barbara Grobert and JP Altier and their employees provide in their other two locations. Local Madison residents Grobert and Altier were ready for a career change, so they decided to take the leap to owning their own business. They both love animals, and in exploring opportunities with Pet Supplies Plus franchises, they discovered a perfect fit. The franchise’s core values of customer service, cleanliness and animal care are right in-line with how Grobert and Altier have run their business since opening their first store in 2017. New Florham Park Pet Store Has It All Continued from previous page

The new 8,000-sq.-ft. Florham Park store offers four self-service pet wash stations, carry-out service in which team members carry heavy items to customers’ cars, free curbside pick-up, free same-day delivery for online purchases over $35, and free auto-ship. Their store features premium brands such as Primal, Farmina, Natural Balance and Orijen. Also available is a wide selection of other natural pet foods for dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, small critters and fish. Families looking for a new best animal friend can find fish—such as betta, dorios, and glofish—parakeets, lizards, geckos, snakes, hamsters and guinea pigs at the Florham Park location. The Florham Park location also features the same cleanliness, and welcoming atmosphere customers have come to expect at their other locations. “We know so many of our customers by their first names, and they know us,” said Grobert. The employees model that attitude. Grobert and Altier are proud to hire people of all ages, from young people starting their first jobs, to retirees who are staying active—an age range of 16 to 70. “We find that one of the most rewarding parts of the business,” she said.

As part of their grand opening event, to be held September 11-12, customers will have a chance to win a free one-year supply of dog or cat food. On Saturday, September 11, mystery scratch discount cards will be given to visitors throughout the day, and on Sunday, September 12, the first 100 neighbors who enter the store will receive a coupon for a free small bag of dog or cat food, valid on any brand within the store. Grobert and Altier are looking forward to yet another celebration—the Halloween Puppy Parade—planned in partnership with the Florham Park Rotary Club on October 16. Prizes will be awarded for “overall best,” “funniest,” “scariest,” and “best human/dog partner costumes,” she stated. And what’s more fun than a hound in a hat?

On and Off the Streets: Urban Art New Jersey Exhibition

T

his exhibition to examines the duality of New Jersey artists whose creative versatility extends from the street to the studio. Although their outdoor murals are more commonly experienced in the “open air” galleries, these twelve artists also maintain a successful studio practice, producing works on canvas, paper, and wood, as well as sculpture, video, stickers, stencils, skateboard decks, and fashion. Along with these studio-produced works, eleven of the artists have painted murals directly on the Morris Museum’s gallery walls to capture the scale and site-specific nature of their street art practice. The impact of the streets on the studio will be explored, as the lines between urban art and fine art have become increasingly blurred. Today’s street art has evolved into a cultural phenomenon with a distinct visual language that has reclaimed public spaces in cities across the globe. Not only has urban art transformed our visual landscape, it has impacted the cultural expression of our time, including fashion, design, advertising, and the contemporary art canon. This exhibition features murals and studio work by Catherine Hart, Clarence Rich, Emilio Florentine, Joe Iurato, Layqa Nuna Yawar, LUV1, Mr Mustart, RH Doaz, RORSHACH, and Will Power, and a special installation of work by Newark-based street art legend Jerry Gant (1961-2018). This exhibition is guest curated by Lois Stavsky. Runs September 24, 2021 through February 27, 2022 Morris Museum | 6 Normandy Heights Road, Morristown 973-971-3700 | www.morrismuseum.org

Calling All Youth Choral Singers NJYC Holds Auditions By Deborah Schapiro

S

ince 1992, the New Jersey Youth Chorus has been making beautiful music locally, nationally and even internationally. Founder and Artistic Director Trish Joyce says, “There is work involved in reaching our level of excellence, but we consider ourselves a family.” Joining the NJYC family begins with an audition. Prior to the pandemic, auditions were held in person each spring. Auditions are now online and are continuing through September. Prospective members are asked to prepare specific scales and songs based on the choir level; there are five ensembles that make up the chorus for grades 3-12. Joyce says, “Prior choral experience is not a requirement; we listen for pitch-matching, tuning and vocal quality. Most of all, we are looking for choristers who have a love and passion for singing.” Once accepted into the chorus, a student does not need to re-audition, although singers will be placed into different ensembles as their voices mature and change. Rehearsals, held weekly, begin with a physical warmup. Joyce notes that “Our singers are vocal athletes.” This is followed by warmups for breathing, humming/phonation, range extension and flexibility, and ear-training. Each chorister’s musicianship is furthered developed through the varied repertoire, and through in-house retreats with guest clinicians. NJYC has performed its mix of inspirational and international music at the White House, at Super Bowl XLVIII, with the NJ Symphony Orchestra, at music conferences in the United States, and in European tours. Says Joyce, “We are about developing the whole child.” For further information, please visit our website at www.njyouthchorus.org or call 973-998-5670.

Attract More Birds to Your Backyard

W

ith all the constraints people lived through in 2020, many turned to their own backyards— for hope, solace, wonder and even entertainment. Feeding birds can be enjoyable for all and provide stress relieve. A recent study, focusing on nature’s impact on humans in suburban and urban areas, found lower levels of depression, anxiety and stress were associated with the number of birds people saw. The benefits of birdwatching come from seeing lots of birds—quantity not “quality”—the study found. People “felt relaxed and connected to nature when they watched birds in their gardens,” researchers said. These feelings increased with the level of bird feeding in the yard. For millions working and schooling from home, this stress reduction was an unintended bonus. Data from 2020 shows sales of bird feed, feeders, nesting boxes and bird houses spiked as interest in backyard birds soared while people spent more time at home.

Interest in birding isn’t slowing down. If you haven’t tried attracting birds to your backyard, now is a perfect opportunity to start with these bird feed and feeder basics to attract more birds to your backyard.

Feeders A variety of bird feeder types placed at different heights attract more birds than one feeder featuring one seed type. Start with two feeder types that accommodate most feed options. Bowl feeders serve not only seeds but also dried mealworms, fruit and suet. Traditional tube feeders are all-purpose options for bird feeding, especially for small birds that cling. For example, the Terrific Tube Feeder is made with stateof-the-art materials to prevent warping and discoloration and includes a quickclean, removable base to make cleaning fast and easy. Regular cleaning of feeders is essential for preventing mold, germs and disease.

Popular Foods Birdseed: Not all birdseed is created equal. Look for quality blends without cheap filler like red millet and oats. Allnatural seed containing no chemicals or mineral oil is safe and more appealing to birds. Top seed picks include all26

natural black oil sunflower. Or a blend, packed with favorites including black oil sunflower, sunflower meats and pecans, attracts the greatest number of wild birds. Insects and Worms: A healthy, lush lawn is one of the best ways to feed birds that prefer insects and worms. You can supplement birds’ diets by serving dried mealworms in a packaged variety that’s easier to feed and less messy than live mealworms. Mealworms are packed with energy and contain essential nutrients, fat and protein. Fresh Fruit: Apples, orange halves and bananas are favored fruits. Suet: Perfect for insect-eating birds, suet is a high-fat food that provides abundant calories, rich nutrition and is a highenergy treat. Using the right feeders and high-quality feed can enhance your backyard and entice more birds, bringing stress relief and enjoyment. Buy Nothing Groups are Bringing Communities Together By Jackie Schatell

R

emember simpler times when neighbors could simply walk next door to borrow a cup of sugar? While that is not the norm in today’s busy society, and many of us don’t even know our neighbors, there is a nationwide movement called the Buy Nothing Project that is essentially bringing us back to times of yore. Through the movement, neighbors can go on Facebook to their specific town’s Buy Nothing (BN) Groups and post anything they would like to give away, lend or share amongst neighbors, as well as ask for anything they would like to receive for free or borrow. This group is strictly a gift economy, as there are no fees involved, only random acts of kindness happening all day long – every day.

“It is exciting to meet neighbors and make connections.” —Maxine Siegel Silverman, Chatham’s Buy Nothing admin

The items can be as mundane as borrowing toilet paper, gifting toys, or clothing, and as extreme as gifting pianos, furniture, or even exercise equipment. But the gifting is only part of it. The program enables neighbors to meet online and in-person, establishing new connections where they can help one another through life’s challenges and celebrations and feel good by giving freely.

30

Vicinity Magazine

September 2021

Chatham’s Buy Nothing admin, Maxine Siegel Silverman, says “I love that the group is community focused as it makes drop offs and pick-ups easy, and allows neighbors to get to know one another.” Silverman adds, “It is exciting to meet neighbors and make connections.” The project also fosters sustainability. According to buynothingproject.org, the founders designed the program to address the three Rs – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle as well as the lesser known Rs - Refuse and Rethink. Participating allows community members to extend the life of items by gifting things they no longer want or need to those in the community who do. It also helps helps to limit the number of items going into landfills. As of July 2021, there were more than 4.25 million participants in 44 countries with over 6500 communities led by over 13,000 volunteers. You can learn more at buynothingproject.org, and check out the map to see if there is an existing group in your town. If there isn’t one, you may just want to start one there.

H

usband and wife mixed media artists, Susan Scarince Jones and Alan Jones are the combined solo exhibitors showcasing their artwork at the Lundt-Glover Gallery in Chatham Township. The opening reception is September 26 from 2-4pm. Susan, whose artwork is inspired by nature, enjoys creating impressionist paintings and collages using metal, copper and tin. Her colors range from warm earth and rust tones of the west to the cool blues, greens and pastel colors depicting spring gardens and trees of the eastern woodlands. Susan Scarince Jones & Alan Jones

Susan has published a series of three photo books for young children called Skippy Chipmunk. The books contain her photographs and stories about a real live chipmunk living in her garden. As an author, she visits local nursery schools and enjoys seeing the children’s reaction to her stories. Her Skippy books and photos will be on display at the exhibit.

Alan Jones is new to the art community, but not new to the artist world. He diligently worked behind the scenes assisting Susan with many of the technical art issues. Alan has always been interested in art, but it was after he retired from a career as a machine designer for various engineering firms that he then began to paint, design and construct clocks using tile, copper and wood. The fall show runs from September 26-December 6 at Chatham Township Municipal Building located at 58 Meyersville Road in Chatham Twp. This art show is free and open to the public. WHOOWE… Your Living Legacy

O

nce in a while I come across an interesting business or personal story that I feel compelled to share. I’ve talked about how precious our time is and putting things into perspective, but maybe this could be a way to keep our loved ones spirits alive for future generations. I met with Dan Qualiano who created a unique way to connect with your family tree. Dan Qualiano with his family

DQ: Sharing Whoowe is definitely my passion. Knowing that I can positively impact potentially every family on the planet as well as being able to share my own personal story with my children, and their future children, keeps me going.

Barry Farber

Having an understanding of where we came from and the special people that came before us gives us a foundation, grounding, confidence, and overall well being in life that we need to stay healthy, both mentally and physically. I want to help everyone gain that. BF: How did you come up with this idea? DQ: The idea behind whoowe came to me one night while thinking about the various ways people pass on their story in the aftermath of a loved one’s passing. I was thinking that the most intimate way to learn about and know someone is to talk to them, face to face. That’s when it hit me. I was going to develop a way for people to create a life story that would engage their loved ones in a type of virtual face to face conversation. An app that could intimately teach our future who we are, hence… whoowe. Barry Farber: How would you explain to someone what Whoowe is? Dan Qualiano: Whoowe creates a personal living biography, in video, of your life in an interactive way, beyond the photo album or home video. It gives your family, friends, and future generations a way to learn about and really “get to know” you through a virtual face to face conversation experience. What would you want to tell your future grand kids about yourself? Whoowe can help you tell your story for those in your life today and for your future generations of your family years from now. BF: What inspired you? DQ: In 2017, I lost my wife Kimberly to cancer. From that time on, one of my greatest regrets, was that my grandchildren, who do not yet exist, will never get to know the wonderful woman that was their grandmother. Sure, I have videos and photos, but like most children, younger generations are becoming less interested in looking through photo albums and watching home videos. How will that keep them engaged and teach them about the true person Kim was? I knew I couldn’t solve that problem for my children or grandchildren, but started to think about how I can help other families to have a first hand biography of their loved ones, in a way that would relay the true essence of the person. BF: What keeps your passion going?

BF: What are some of the reactions you’ve seen in the first tests/experiences? DQ: The reactions are amazing, and depending on the age group, I get a different response. For the older generation with years of knowledge, they see the wisdom in preserving one’s life story, and they are ready to tell it. Many shed tears at the thought of being able to hear their mother or father again, and want to give that experience to their grandkids. The middle-aged folks, once they get over that it’s ok to think about life after their death and the family they may never know, they are all in. They see the sand in the hourglass going by so quickly and don’t want to miss the opportunity to tell their story in a visceral way. The younger generation see Whoowe as an easy to use and fun app. They don’t quite grasp the importance of it, because let’s face it… death in their minds is a long way away, but for their parents and grandparents they love the idea and are quick to jump in and start interviewing their elders. Dan Qualiano is an entrepreneur and creative inventor, with over 25 years in product development, innovation, design, and business management. He is a musician, singer songwriter, and dedicated father of two children. Whoowe is available for free download on Google Play and the App store. Learn more about whoowe at: www.whoowe.com
