Hometown Heroes Banner Program Launches in Millburn/Short Hills

Working with Millburn’s American Legion Post 140 and Son’s of American Legion Squadron Post 140, Karen Eastman Bigos, who grew up and has worked in town for 39 years, and CoCommittee Chairman Daniel Cannon, a Millburn resident who is the Commander of the Sons of the American Legion, have launched the Hometown Heroes Banner Program in the township. The initiative is aimed at honoring and recognizing the brave men and women who are either veterans or active military members that live or have previously lived within the township. The plan is to line Millburn Ave. and Main Street, from Memorial Day to Veteran’s Day, with 24” by 48” banners displaying the faces, names, and service details of the honorees. She says, “This is a meaningful way to decorate the town, display our patriotism, and to thank our servicemen and women.” Those interested in purchasing a banner for the street display or to hang at home, and/or make donations, can do so at hometownheroesmsh.com.

Free ESL Classes Available at The Adult School

The nonprofit Adult School of the Chathams, Madison and Florham Park (The Adult School) will be offering free ESL classes this fall in Madison and Harding, and an American History class for English learners in Chatham. The Adult School is committed to those in the community who are looking for educational opportunities that will help them gain economic self-sufficiency. For this reason, in January 2013, The Adult School piloted a program providing free ESL classes in Madison. The pilot was such a success and demand was so high that they have continued to offer free ESL classes every year in the spring and fall terms. A spring 2023 student said that “she appreciated how comfortable the teacher made her feel when speaking English.” The free ESL classes begin in late September or early October. Chatham Resident Publishes Fourth Book

Michelle Cameron, of Chatham, has published her fourth book, with one more forthcoming in 2024. She says that she likes to write about unfamiliar and often-neglected periods of Jewish history. Her newest book, Babylon: A Novel of Jewish Captivity, is a multi-generational biblical saga of captivity, romance, faith, and redemption, set against the Judean exile in Babylon. Michelle, whose first historical novel was about her rabbi ancestor from the 13th Century, says that her novels are “labors of love.” A book launch party will take place on October 15, at 2:30 pm, at The Library of the Chathams. Like Michelle’s other books, Babylon is available wherever books are sold.

Millburn Natives Offer Free SAT/ACT Tutoring

Millburn natives, twins Sanando and Swagato Kanjilal, are offering free introductory SAT and ACT tutoring. Currently medical students, who have been tutoring for four years, the twins use a unique strategy they developed to help students ace the tests. They put their students into the mindset of the test maker. Sanando used this technique to score 1560 on the SAT, which was improved from 1260. He says, “I was a student not so long ago, and I am really inspired to help up-and-coming students avoid the same mistakes I made when I was studying for these exams. My goal is to steer them towards the most effective methods.” Their “motivation is to help others not have to do hours of mindless practice like they did initially, but to instead try to strategically dismantle the SAT and ACT.” Sanando adds, “I strongly believe anyone can do well on these exams with the correct strategy.” They can be reached at 732-675-2623 or sandando.kanjilal@gmail.com.

Local Mom Publishes Debut Picture Book

While she has written nearly 200 children’s books against licensed properties like LEGO and Disney, Meredith Rusu of New Providence is excited to announce the launch of her debut original picture book called, “There’s a Yeti in My Tummy.” It is the first book in her new Mighty Moods series, published by 4U2B Books and Media.

The mother of two boys, ages 8 and 6, says she used her experiences with her children as inspiration for her new series. Her older son, Matthew, inspired the first story, which is about a boy expressing his big feelings through the use of an imaginary Yeti. “There’s a Yeti in My Tummy” is on-sale now and available wherever books are sold. Meredith will be doing a story time event and signing at Indigo Books in the Short Hills Mall on September 23rd. She can be contacted on her website: meredithrusu.com.

Doggie Pageant Held in Chatham

Recently, a family-fun bark-tastic extravaganza, the “Dog Days of Summer Pageant,” took place at the Library of the Chathams. Proud pup parents came out to showcase their furry family members in a delightful community event. The pups donned cute costumes and performed wag-worthy acts. Everyone engaged in a variety of dog-inspired activities, music, and fun that kept tails wagging and paws hopping. The event took place on the basketball court behind the library, which was transformed into a canine wonderland. Humans enjoyed the food truck, La Coqueta Mexican Cocina, while treating their furry companions to other delectable treats.

Chatham Runner Races in South Africa to Fight Poverty

Katie Stefko, of Chatham, loves to run and has put her passion to great use by running for charitable causes. Recently, she traveled all the way to South Africa to run in the Comrades Marathon, a grueling 54-mile race from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. The goal was to find 54 sponsors for children around the world living in poverty.

An assistant teacher in Summit, Katie ran with Team World Vision, a group she has volunteered with for seven years. World Vision, a Christian humanitarian

organization, offers child sponsorship as a way to fight poverty and injustice.

Katie attained sponsorships at $39 a month for twelve children living in Africa and other areas of the world, intending to help to provide the children with access to clean water, education, and healthcare, as well as sanitation and hygiene programs.

She participated in the race because she wanted to experience South Africa, see the work being done there by

World Vision in Ethiopia, and meet and hear the stories of the children she helped sponsor.

“I’m grateful to everyone who supported me along the way and those who sponsored the children,” she says. “After seeing the work World Vision has done in Ethiopia, and after hearing stories about positive life transformation from community leaders and families in Ethiopia, I am excited to continue to move my feet for World Vision for years to come.”

Katie also leads the World Changers team, which will participate in the Superhero Halloween Half Marathon fundraiser in Harding on October 21. The Chatham Be Positive Club Holds 2nd Basketball Tournament to Raise Money for Childhood Cancer Foundation

Mark Pasacreta, a junior at Chatham High School, was greatly inspired after reading an article about Andrew McDonough, a student-athlete who tragically lost his life to AML Leukemia at the age of fourteen, and The Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to providing financial assistance to families whose children are battling pediatric cancer. The foundation is the number one provider of financial assistance to families whose children are battling cancer. Motivated by this story, Mark and his friends created the Chatham Be Positive Club to raise funds for The Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation by bringing the Chatham community together through sporting events.

“Andrew’s story resonated with me and my friends. One day, Andrew was playing the sport he loved, and the next day, he was diagnosed with cancer,” says Mark, who plays basketball for his high school team. “167 days after his diagnosis, Andrew passed away. It made us realize that at any moment, our lives, and the sports we love to play, can be taken away from us.”

The Chatham Basketball Club agreed to sponsor Chatham Be Positive’s first event—a three vs. three basketball event at the Chatham Middle School basketball courts on August 20, 2022. The event was a huge success, with over 60 participants and $13,000 raised.

On August 19, 2023, the Chatham Be Positive Group held its second tournament with the support of the Chatham Basketball Club, McHale’s Basketball Academy, Mitsuba, Fleur De

Sel, Frames on Main, Harvest Bistro, JB Peterman Orthodontics, PackShipNMore, Private Prep, Rose City Paving, School of Rock, Scoop’s Ice Cream, Sonny’s Indian Kitchen, and Strand Tennis.

Contests and prizes included NY Jets tickets, a gift certificate to Private Prep, and restaurant gift cards. Participants were invited to donate $10 or send out five emails to spread awareness of the B+ Foundation. Some participants also created fundraising web pages. Those interested in helping but not playing joined the event as volunteers.

The event raised $17,513, which was all donated to The Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation.

“This is an excellent cause,” says Mark.

“We enjoy running these tournaments because we know that what we are doing

matters and has a broader impact on the families helped by the foundation. These families are suffering, and the money raised provides them with financial and emotional support and finds critical, cutting-edge childhood cancer research.”

According to the foundation, childhood cancer is the number one disease killer of children and teenagers, more than any other disease. Every day, 46 children will be diagnosed with cancer. Each week, 49 children die from cancer, and nearly 40,000 children are in treatment.

The Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation assisted nearly 3,000 families in 2022 and founded over 150 childhood research projects at top institutions.

Steampunk Themed Train Rides at Whippany Railway Museum

The Whippany Railway Museum, an all-volunteer non-profit, will host its first “Steampunk Themed Train Rides.” Steampunk is clothing, costumes, gadgets, and styles inspired by the Victorian-era and 19th-century industrial steam power… creating a retrofuturistic look and aesthetics.

Visitors can dress in Victorian-style steampunk attire, such as vests, corsets, top hats, goggles, etc. (though not required.) Explore and take pictures in front of the historic steam locomotive, No. 385, built in 1907, and the 1918 Railbus. Ride back in time onboard the beautifully restored mahogany-interior premium club cars—the 1912 “Millionaire’s Express” Subscription Car or the 1927 “Jersey Coast” Club Car. Passengers can also choose to have the fun of riding in one of the vintage cabooses.

Also, on the Museum property, that day will be several Steampunk vendors selling steampunk wear and souvenirs. At the same time, a Whippany Railway Museum kiosk will offer up antique lanterns, railroad hardware, and other rail and transportation artifacts. Reeves-Reed Arboretum to Hold September Concert

Reeves-Reed Arboretum has announced that it received a $5,000 grant from the Summit Foundation to support the Arboretum’s 2023 Sounds of a Summer Night performing arts series. Throughout July and August, guests enjoyed performances by the MRB Jazz Project, Country rocker Nickki Briar, and singer song-writer Sahara Moon, as well as a show by the Alborada Spanish Dance Theater.

This fall, there will be a tribute concert to Carole King by One Fine Tapestry. Musicians Gerard and Diane Barros will perform a selection of chart toppers King wrote for the Drifters, Beatles, Shirelles, Monkees, Chiffons, James Taylor and more.

Concertgoers are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets. They should arrive at 5pm to enjoy the gardens and picnic before the concert starts at 6pm.

Woofstock, the 14th annual Home for Good Dog Rescue two-day summer music festival, is back again this fall! The event starts at 11am, with activities beginning at 12pm, and live music by the Cliffs playing all day, from 12-5pm. In addition, there will be fun for the whole family including food trucks, craft vendors, beer and wine, prize raffles, children’s activities, and of course dog adoptions.

This is Home for Good’s largest adoption day of the year, and the event is pet-friendly, so be sure to bring your beloved dogs to join in on the fun! In addition, all HFG alum are invited to come and reunite with their siblings and former foster families.

he 200 Club is holding a free, family-fun, First Responders Day event this fall. Bring your family, friends, and neighbors for a fun day outdoors. The event will include food trucks, kids’ events, vendors, live music, and more.

Kids of all ages will love watching demonstrations by local first responder departments, and participating in fun-filled activities including a Home Run Derby, Corn Hole Tournament, and a Closest-to-the-Pin Golf Challenge. Families are invited to come and cheer on the teams in the Morris County first responder competitions.

Most people see first responders in times of crisis. This event will allow the community to get to know first responders in a relaxed manner. The goal of the event is to show gratitude to the incredibly dedicated Morris County first responders and their families.

All proceeds from the day’s events will benefit The Millburn Education Foundation, which supports Millburn Township schools, teachers, and students. The fundraiser will feature live music, food and drinks, shopping, and lots of fun activities for the entire family. Bring your lawn chairs.

The family-fun event will showcase over 20 music bands/solo artists playing on four stages throughout the day and into the night. Don’t miss the After Party from

10pm until midnight, with more music and fun on Main Street!

The Kid Zone will offer activities for kids in pre-K to age 18 including Arts and STEM Activities, Inflatable Rides, Carnival Games, a Balloon Artist, Face Painting, Air Brush and Henna Tattoos, a Photo Booth, and more!

The Fitness Zone will provide a line-up of free classes throughout the day with workouts hosted by local gyms, yoga studios and athletic facilities.

Attendees will find great food and shopping opportunities including food and beverages from local eateries, as well as handmade retail goods in the new Artisan Village.

There will also be a Beer Garden for adults ages 21 and over, where entry and drink tickets can be purchased at the event.

Don’t Miss Chatham’s September “Plein Air Perspectives” Art Show!

The Art League of the Chathams has announced that it will be holding a free September reception for its Fall Art Show. Refreshments will be served. The artwork will be available for public viewing until December 3, 2023.

The small group show called, “Plein Air Perspectives,” which means “outdoors” in French, will showcase the artwork of six NJ-based ALC members in the Lundt-Glover Gallery: P.J. Aduskevicz, Donatella Casirola Bocchieri, Rita Riekstins Feeney, Betsy Mirabelli, Nancy Kingman, and Debora Thedinga. In addition, artwork by the general ALC membership will be exhibited in the strolling gallery.

The Art League of the Chathams is open to new members – both artists and supporters. It sponsors the ALC Rosemary Howlett Memorial Scholarship, via an award of $1,000, which is awarded to a graduating senior of Chatham High School who has excelled in the arts and is pursuing a post-secondary program in art.

JANET BOLTAX A Thing For Faces

Janet Boltax grew up in Queens, NY. Her father, a painter in his own right, gave her a set of oil paints at ten years old, and she hasn’t looked back since.

At 25, she plunged herself into classes at the Art Students League of New York, while supporting herself by waitressing. When life found her a wife and mother in Montclair with kids in school during the day, she began painting as a full time effort.

Boltax tells us that she likes to paint portraits in a thematic series. “As long as I can remember,” she says, “I have had an affinity for older people… as a portrait painter I find they often have the most interesting faces to paint.” As such she has created a series of portraits of people between the ages of 90 and 104. Gladys, a 36x36 inch oil on canvas, is a tightly framed image of her 92 year old subject in which we can see a lot of what life has held for this subject, as well as a lively spark aiming toward a future.

Intrigued by twins and the idea of two people sharing the same DNA, Boltax found twins of all ages to include in that portrait series. Seeing Double, is a 40x30 inch oil-on-canvas of infants named Cosmic and Crescent. The thing about identical twins is that even though they’re the same, they’re not. Herein Boltax shows us similarity and difference, in this portrait of toddlers.

Lilah, a 12x16 inch graphite on paper drawing captures the ten-year-old grandniece of the artist. Unlike her paintings, in this case Boltax, forsaking her oils and using only a minimal amount of line and shading, has masterfully captured the impish quality of this child. We can simply feel her personality as she smiles back at us and in delight wonder what’s on her mind.

TURNING BACK TIME

In 1960, Barth’s Pork Shop opened on South Street in New Providence; a pink neon pig illuminated the wall behind the butcher counter while drying sausages were displayed above the counter. The shop was tiny and customers stood elbow-to-elbow in order to procure the finest cuts of meat trimmed by skilled butchers. Most of these butchers hailed from Italy, Germany, and Austria where butchering was a craft trade.

BARTH’S MARKET TURNING BACK TIME

Barth’s was aptly named a “pork store” because its focus was on home-made smoked ham, cold cuts, bratwurst, and frankfurters, Pork was fashionable in the 1960s and for owner and immigrant, Otto Barth, that trended well with his German upbringing. Throughout his tenure, Otto kept true to his motto: “Give the customers what they want.”

Current owner Jim Barth (grandson of Otto) grew up in the store and learned the butchering trade from his father and grandfather. For 30 years, Jim has been the visionary

who struck the right balance of tradition and progress to allow Barth’s to continue to meet customer’s changing wants and needs.

And what exactly do customers want? First and foremost, they want a variety of fresh, high quality offerings that are as minimally processed as possible. From the bountiful displays of the beef, poultry, pork, and seafood counters to the fresh produce that is constantly restocked and the prepared foods that are cooked in-house daily, Barth’s delivers.

But customers come for more than the product; they also want the “Barth’s experience.” The expanded store is roomy enough that customers aren’t standing elbow-to-elbow unless it’s a holiday, but small enough to allow for a warm atmosphere. While there are a variety of graband-go offerings, most food has to be ordered at a counter from a friendly and knowledgeable staff member. For many who live within an hour of Barth’s, pre-ordering beef tenderloin, turkey, shrimp, and/or crown pork or lamb roast is part of their family’s holiday meal tradition. The top quality food offerings, the sense of tradition, the friendly atmosphere, and the personal service make shopping at Barth’s feel like the best parts of a “shop local” and family-owned-business experience.

The Barth’s Market of today carries on with many traditions of Barth’s Pork Store of 1960 while meeting the demands of a much larger customer base. Jim and his son, Max, use state-of-the art equipment and 70-year-old family recipes to make their famous hams, sausages, bratwurst and cold cuts. As an example, the “not-so-“secret to Barth's incomparable bacon is using a high-quality slab of meat, leaving the rib meat on, curing it until it

is fully cooked, all while using a family-recipe that is in its 4th generation—basically no fillers, no short cuts. For over 7 decades, through three expansions and a name change, Barth’s Market continues to “give customers what they want.”

Tips for Midlife Women That Can Help Improve Their Sleep

Bryan Umiker, owner of The Ethical Mattress Company and a 20+ year veteran of the mattress industry, says sleep disturbances are extremely prevalent and a challenging problem for the midlife women visiting his store. “According to the National Sleep Foundation, over 60% of menopausal women report frequent bouts of insomnia and other sleep problems, such as sleep apnea, snoring, and restless leg syndrome,” Umiker states, adding that his female customers frequently share that the physical discomforts of menopause—like hot flashes and sweating—are having a negative impact on their sleep quality.

Umiker says that helping women facing these sleep challenges is something he’s learned to do over the last two decades in the sleep business. “It’s possible to dramatically improve your quality of sleep by paying close attention to your sleep environment and other controllable factors,” he says.

According to Umiker, airflow is vital in offsetting the impacts of hot flashes. “It’s critical we surround our bodies with breathable materials that allow for maximum airflow, as this facilitates the rapid dissipation of heat away from our bodies.” Umiker says this principle applies to your mattress, pillow, sheets, comforters, and sleepwear.

Starting with the bedding and sleepwear, “Knits are up to 5 times more breathable than woven fabrics,” he states. “In my experience, the best fabric for breathability is a 100% cotton jersey knit. After that would be a percale, which is better than a sateen weave because it has less density and better airflow

Moving on to the mattress and pillow, “Hybrid mattresses made with natural materials like cotton and wool are tremendously breathable and facilitate dramatically better airflow than the memory foam mattresses sold by most national brands.” Studies have found memory foam can add as much as 10 degrees to the micro-climate surrounding your body at night and that it’s essential to avoid both mattresses and pillows that utilize memory foam.

Why It’s Important to Put Your Wishes in Writing

Most people have very definitive ideas about what they want as they age. For example, it’s common to hear, “I don’t want to go into a nursing home.” But many times, these preference are never put into writing. Therefore, it is so important not only to plan ahead, but to have these wishes made legally binding.

“Long-term care planning is generally a holistic approach to meeting the legal, financial and medical needs of an individual,” says Donald Dennison, an associate with Mandlebaum Barrett Law Firm whose expertise is in elder law. “The objective is to allow a person who may not yet be in their proverbial golden years to remain in the driver’s seat for as long as possible.”

He says even young people should have a plan in place.

“Anyone who’s over the age of 18 should consider signing legal documents such as a power of attorney, a living will, and/or a last will and testament. These documents are really important so that there’s at least one or more people who can make healthcare decisions if there is a catastrophic accident.”

It’s hard for the average person to know what considerations to take into account when doing this type of planning, and most online legal services can’t know every person’s unique situation. This is why sitting down in person with a professional is critical.

“Most people delay this type of planning because they don’t like to think about getting older,” says Don. “But, aging can cause forgetfulness, memory loss, and the inability to communicate effectively, and without proper planning, people are left hoping that others are making the right decisions for them.”

Kitchen Renovation with Wine Room

Domus Kitchens, headquartered in Fairfield, recently created a beautiful renovation of a kitchen/wine room, built-in dining room cabinet, and bathroom vanity in a Livingston home. “The house that was built in the 1960s was modern, but the kitchen was outdated according to today’s standards,” states Vincenzo Tersigni, owner of Domus Kitchens.

His first step was to talk with the homeowners about their wants and needs to determine the desired functionality of the kitchen. Once Vincenzo established that the homeowners wanted a functional, open, and light space, he drew up plans to complement his design services and integrate the customers’ premium quality appliance choices.

“The homeowners knew what they wanted to accomplish. It was easy to meet their needs,” says Vincenzo.

Domus Kitchens designed a fully customized space using top-of-theline materials from Italy, including artisanal natural oak cabinets. With matching paneling, the custom cabinets were hand-finished, and using state-of-the-art technology, they open without having handles.

Vincenzo juxtaposed his design in the wine room with a glass wall, giving the area a nice, finished, and modern look. He then carried the look and feel to the other areas of the home.

Common Threads

Over 25 years ago I wrote Diamond in the Rough (Penquin Publishing) which has sold over 1 million copies in over 30 languages and became a radio and tv program and recently an audio book on Audible. I decided to pick it up and read it after all this time. It featured interviews with brain surgeons, billionaires, athletes, entertainers, business leaders and more. I also conducted massive research with top scientists from such prestigious organizations as the Cornell University Department of Neurology and Neuroscience, the National Foundation for Brain Research, the National Institute of Mental Health, and the International Brain Research Organization.

Here are the Common Threads that still hold true today:

You won’t find any magical answers. There is no wizard to grant your wishes, no clearly demarcated yellow-brick road you can follow that will lead you and all others who walk along it directly to the land of Oz, to fame and fortune. Not one of the high achievers interviewed took the same path as any other. They did, however, have several traits in common:

They have healthy positive attitudes. They believe that the right attitude can often mean the difference between success and failure. They expect things to turn out well and have confidence in their own abilities to make that happen.

They take action. If high achievers desire a particular out-come, they will put everything they have into its realization. They don’t expect to be handed anything on a silver platter; they don’t even begin a project unless they know they’re willing to put in the effort it will take to make it successful. They work hard because they know that nothing worthwhile is ever achieved without effort.

They learn from failure and disappointment. They welcome problems as opportunities to use their creative energies, and they look upon even the largest of obstacles as challenges to be met and savored. They are not defeated by rejection. They get discouraged and depressed like everyone else, but they quickly bounce back and redouble their effort and resolve. No one wants to fail, but high achievers accept failure as a part of life, and know that there is a lesson to be learned in every setback.

They surround themselves with positive ideas and role models. High achievers are constantly looking to improve themselves. They never assume that just because they have reached a certain level of success, they can stop learning. They might not have a college education or even a high school diploma, but they place a high value on continuing their education. They study their craft, their industry, their skills, their hobbies. They read constantly, share ideas with others in their industry, and seek out mentors whose wisdom and experience can help them achieve their goals and desires.

They are passionate about what they do. It’s possible to become famous and/ or wealthy doing something you hate, but does that equal success? No one in this book thinks so. Asked “What is the secret to your success?” every person interviewed answered that they had found something they loved to do. Some people found their passion very early in life; others wandered around from here to there until they discovered their life’s work. But all of them eventually found vocations they truly loved. And because of that, all of them have gone through life with the enthusiasm and energy that passion produces. Once each person discovered his or her passion in life, it became like a magnet, drawing them inevitably closer to success.

They set goals. They focus on what they want to achieve, establish priorities, and know what they have to do in order to keep moving forward. Their plans are flexible enough to allow for the unexpected, but they always have a specific destination in mind. Goals provide them with purpose and allow them to wake up each morning energized and looking forward to the tasks they know must be accomplished that day.

They feel a joyful obligation to give back to others

They are grateful for what they have been able to achieve, and are happy to help others do the same. They know that by elevating someone else’s success, they elevate their own. They are competitive but not cutthroat. They have integrity and compassion and a desire to make a meaningful contribution to their profession, their community and their world. They agree with William H. Danforth who more than 100 years ago wrote in his inspirational book, I Dare You! “Catch a passion for helping others and a richer life will come back to you.”
