The Museum of Early Trades & Crafts Lands Major Grant
Reeves-Reed Arboretum
The Museum of Early Trades & Crafts (METC) in Madison, just scored a crucial $66,300 grant from the New Jersey Historical Commission for 2025. This boost comes at a time when many cultural institutions are grappling with financial challenges, ensuring METC can continue its vital work of preserving 18th- and 19th-century craftsmanship.
With this funding, METC is set to enhance its educational programs, exhibits, and community events, all while playing a pivotal role in RevolutionNJ—New Jersey’s lead-up to the 250th anniversary of America’s founding.
METC is a history museum specifically focused on New Jersey and the people who lived and worked here from the colonial era through the age of industrialization. Housed in a historic Richardsonian Romanesque Revival building, the museum offers a rich, hands-on experience that delves into American history by highlighting the lives and stories of 18th- and 19th-century craftsmen and artisans. Through its extensive collection, METC connects past experiences with today’s audiences, bridging historical traditions with modern perspectives.
Earns Global Tree Conservation Honor
Summit’s Reeves-Reed Arboretum has added another leafy accolade to its name: a prestigious Level II ArbNet Accreditation, highlighting its commitment to tree conservation, education, and environmental stewardship. Established in 1974, Reeves-Reed is more than a picturesque park—it’s a living classroom spread over 13.5 acres of historic and contemporary gardens. With over 100 species of woody plants, including century-old Tulip trees and a 150-year-old Sugar Maple, the Arboretum plays a key role in educating visitors about the importance of trees. Its diverse programming, from nature camps to volunteer opportunities, fosters environmental stewardship and community engagement.
Curatorial Director at Reeves-Reed Arboretum John Beirne says he sees the accreditation as a gateway to new opportunities for global collaboration and addressing climate change. This honor solidifies Reeves-Reed’s status as a vital green space, not just for Summit, but for the world.

Local’s New Thriller Explores Suburban Suspense
Liz Alterman, a Chatham native, has just released her fourth book, “The House on Cold Creek Lane,” which promises readers an enthralling dive into domestic suspense. The story follows a young mother who relocates to a new neighborhood, bringing her toddler and newborn into a world filled with uncertainty and the echoes of her own traumatic past. Struggling to make
connections, she finds herself caught between an overly inquisitive older neighbor and a younger woman she hopes to befriend.
In a parallel narrative, another woman in Florida cares for her elderly mother while grappling with her own haunting past. As the novel progresses, the mysterious connection between these two women unfolds, revealing deeper ties and shared histories.
Alterman, who is also a freelance writer, masterfully weaves elements of suspense into the everyday challenges of midlife, drawing inspiration from her own experiences as a new mom in a new town.
“The House on Cold Creek Lane” is available wherever books are sold.
Get Silly with The Journal of Nonsense: The Wackiest Magazine for Kids!
Who says kids’ magazines have to be serious? Not Ethan T. Berlin of South Orange, the mind behind the absurd The Journal of Nonsense. Two and a half years ago, frustrated by dull kids’ magazines, he created one full of fun and silliness.
Launched in March 2022, The Journal of Nonsense has grown into a beloved monthly magazine for kids aged 6 to 12. It features fake recipes like “Invisible Waffles,” and quizzes like “Is My Teacher An Alien?” Each issue features silly ideas sent in by kids.
Ethan, a seasoned comedy writer for shows like Crank Yankers, now writes for BarkBox and spends time with his family while running the magazine. His kids, 11 and 8, are his biggest fans and critics.
Ethan, who has authored several children’s books, including his most recent one, How to Draw a Brave Chicken, is also launching the Nonsense Tour to teach kids how to write jokes. Subscribe at thejournalofnonsense.com and embrace the nonsense!
High School Teams
In the realm of high school sports, where football and basketball often dominate the spotlight, one local South Orange filmmaker is shedding light on the electrifying world of fencing. Holly Buechel, a former competitive fencer with a 20-year career, recently launched a documentary that was 10 years in the making, “Fencing for the Edge.”
The film’s narrative crystallizes around the dramatic rivalry between the girls’ high school teams of Columbia and Bernards, culminating in an intense final match in 2014. With a festival run that has garnered acclaim, including an honorable mention at the New Jersey International Film Festival, Buechel’s film is poised for wider recognition. She hopes to contribute to the growing narrative around women’s sports, emphasizing the sport’s physical and mental rigor, teamwork, and resilience. Holly’s film celebrates the sport and inspires future generations of fencers, which can be seen at SOPAC on September 26th at 6pm.

FROM PAGES TO POSSIBILITIES: A TEEN’S MISSION TO BRIDGE EDUCATIONAL GAPS
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
AA remarkable young man from Millington is making a profound impact on the lives of students thousands of miles away. Armaan Lerner’s dedication to education and service has led him to spearhead a project that reflects his commitment to giving back, showcasing the true spirit of compassion.
At just 17 years old, this Watchung Hills Regional High School senior has already built a solid foundation in service. Since 2021, he has been deeply involved in volunteer work, beginning with tutoring Afghan refugees in English and math. His commitment to education didn’t stop there—volunteering at a medical clinic in South Carolina that serves underserved communities further fueled his passion for helping others.
The seed for his latest project was planted in early 2023 when his mother, Preet Sandhu, returned from a conference in South Africa and shared her experience visiting schools in the Eastern Cape. What struck Armaan most was the stark contrast between the students’ enthusiasm for learning and the severe lack of resources— particularly books. The schools’ libraries were almost bare, and the impact was clear: without adequate educational materials, students were struggling to achieve basic literacy and had little chance of advancing to higher education.
Determined to make a difference, Armaan took action. He organized a book drive, reaching out to his local community, including Central Middle School, Long Hill Library, Garden State Sikh Association, St. Vincent DePaul Church, and various other organizations. The response was overwhelming. In just a few months, he collected over 2,000 books, ranging from children’s storybooks to high school textbooks and novels.
“I believe that education is the foundation for success, and I want to help give every student the chance to build a better future,” Armaan said. “It feels good to know that these books, which were collecting dust here, can make such a big difference in someone else’s life.”
Shipping these books to South Africa, however, proved to be a logistical challenge. Yet, undeterred, Armaan partnered with the Kariega Foundation and a shipping company to ensure the books would reach their destination.
But Armaan’s mission doesn’t end with this project. As he enters his senior year, he’s already planning his next initiative: a book drive for orphanages and schools in Punjab, India, where his family has roots. His goal remains the same— to provide students in underserved areas with the educational resources they need to succeed.
Armaan’s dedication to education and his commitment to helping others is truly inspiring.
As he continues to collect donations to cover shipping costs, his story reminds us all that one person can make a significant difference in the world, one book at a time.

LITTLE HANDS, BIG HEARTS: A School’s Year-Round Mission of Giving
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
DDiamond Hill Montessori in Berkeley Heights is more than just a place for early childhood education; it is a cornerstone of community involvement. Co-owners Auna Conrad and Kristina Brusco have transformed this 23-year-old institution into a shining example of empathy, instilling the importance of giving back in young minds.
Since taking ownership three years ago, Auna and Kristina have upheld and expanded the Montessori philosophy, emphasizing holistic learning and peace education. Their commitment goes beyond academics, focusing on raising socially responsible children who understand the impact of their actions on their community and the world around them.
Diamond Hill makes charitable activities a year-round mission, a practice that sets the school apart. One of the school’s standout initiatives is the monthly drives for Moms Helping Moms school’s Jersey-based charity. Each month, the school identifies the most urgent needs in collaboration with the organization. In January, the focus was on collecting essentials like swaddle blankets for new
mothers, ensuring that the efforts were timely and impactful.
Monthly pizza fundraisers are another way the school gives back. The proceeds are donated to various charities, carefully chosen to align with significant observances. During Black History Month, the funds were directed to Young, Black & Lit, a nonprofit dedicated to providing inclusive books to schools.
What truly sets Diamond Hill apart is the active involvement of its students, who range from two and a half to six years old. The school’s philosophy encourages even the youngest learners to participate in charitable activities, teaching them about empathy and community from an early age. “Our goal is to help raise empathetic and caring children who think not just of themselves but of their communities, their area, and the world,” Brusco explains.
Recent initiatives at the school have included a food drive for the Church of the Little Flower in Berkeley Heights. The children were actively involved, helping to assemble complete meals and learning about food insecurity. By involving them
in this process, the school helps these young minds grasp complex social issues in an age-appropriate manner, making the learning experience both meaningful and practical.
The efforts extend beyond the school walls. A luggage drive, in partnership with Help 4 All in Chatham and Livingston Philanthropies, collected over 200 pieces of luggage for families in need. Often living in temporary housing, these families benefited greatly from something as simple as luggage.
For the Co-Heads of Diamond Hill Montessori, the work is about more than running a successful school; it is about building a legacy of kindness and community service. “We’ve been really lucky to be where we are,” Brusco says, “and we want to make sure that we are redoing the right thing for the children, as well as the community.”
Looking ahead, Kristina and Auna plan to continue finding innovative ways to involve the students in giving back, reinforcing the idea that even the smallest hands can make a big difference.

Each passenger will receive a commemorative “Lackawanna Electrics” keepsake, while supplies last. The Museum will also welcome several retired Erie Lackawanna employees who operated the MU’s in everyday service decades ago.
The Museum’s president, Steve Hepler recalled: “I was on that last run 40 years ago, and if someone had told me back then that the Whippany Railway Museum would one day eventually acquire, restore and operate No. 2454 on its excursion trains, I would have thought they were daft.”
Passengers can choose to ride in the 1927-era Central Railroad of New Jersey club car ‘Jersey Coast’, which is a beautifully restored, wood-paneled conveyance that features all the amenities

GREENWOOD GARDENS: Where History Blooms and Community Grows
BY JACKIE SCHATELL, PHOTOS COURTESY OF GREENWOOD GARDENS
GGreenwood Gardens, nestled in Short Hills, is a historic gem and a serene natural space. Founded in the early 20th century, the 28-acre public garden has evolved from a private estate into a non-profit public garden dedicated to connecting people with nature and the arts. The garden’s mission is to maintain a historic garden oasis where visitors can experience tranquility and beauty. Open since 2013, the garden is accessible to the public Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from May through the first weekend in November.
The organization’s most recent strategic plan calls for the continued renovation of key areas and features, notably the 1920’s era seven-tier Cascade fountain, to enhance both the landscape and visitor experience. Executive Director Abby O’Neill says, “Our comprehensive plan aims to transform Greenwood while preserving its historic charm and ensuring every visitor has a memorable experience.”
Greenwood Gardens offers a variety of events and activities throughout the year. The garden hosts around 50 programs annually, including jazz and classical concerts, dance performances, nature and art history lectures, and creative arts days. A recent highlight was a 1920s-themed Gatsby Date Night, where visitors enjoyed Prosecco and dressed in clothing evoking the era, reliving the estate’s glamorous past.
Special features at Greenwood Gardens include the picturesque Teahouse, Summerhouse, Main Axis fountains, the Tennis Loggia, and pathways built in the 1920s. Visitors can also explore the largest collection of Rookwood tiles in the region and enjoy
gorgeous horticultural displays, as well as interactive farmyard animals, including turkeys, chickens, and geese. There are also comfortable teak benches throughout the garden for use by those wishing to linger and contemplate nature.
In addition, the friendly and welcoming staff at Greenwood Gardens plays a crucial role in ensuring an excellent experience for everyone who visits. With continued efforts to enhance its landscape and facilities, Greenwood Gardens remains a cherished destination for connecting with nature and history.

HOT AND SPICY CLASSES FOR ALL BODIES

EPSTEIN
Viviana Gago Gonzalez
WWhen Viviana Gago Gonzalez began taking yoga classes, she loved what it did for her body, but she didn’t always feel comfortable in her mind. “I started to see what was missing in the yoga world, such as a diversity in teachers and students,” she says. “There weren’t a lot of people there with my body type.”
When she became an instructor, she decided to change things up. “I’m really big on music, and some yoga studios frown upon it, but for me, music is healing, it motivates, and it just makes you feel good. Sometimes it makes you feel sad, and that’s okay. We have to embrace what we’re feeling when we’re moving in the flow.”
Viviana developed quite a following – she wasn’t the only one looking for something different. Last year, to the delight of her students, she opened Sana Yoga in New Providence, and this year, another in Union.
“They’re both really artsy, and there’s a lot of Spanglish terminology on the Drishti wall, which is your focus point when you’re practicing.” In New Providence, students will see the word Strength, and then right next to it, Fuerza, which in Spanish means strength. “They’re not only getting a yoga lesson, but they’re also getting a Spanish lesson while they’re here,” she says, laughing.
(continued
Even the name of the studio, Sana, means to heal. “For me, yoga is about healing, tapping into your inner feelings, your inner child, and then learning to embrace any feelings that come up.”
The classes integrate infrared heating. “These types of classes always made me feel really powerful as a woman, and I felt that yoga in a heated room woke up the femininity inside of me.”
Students can choose from classes that are just warm to deliciously hot. “You basically sweat, you detox, you open up the joints, and you feel really good when class is over.”
Sana Yoga offers four styles of yoga –Sana Sculpt, which incorporates light weights; A-Sana Power, which is a faster, power flow; Slow Sana; and a Yin n’ Sana, a Chinese-based restorative meditation yoga that focuses on ligaments, tissues, and the fascia in the body.
When it came to choosing instructors for these classes, Viviana was extremely mindful. “I’ve worked in a lot of yoga studios, and I’ve noticed that all the instructors have been the same. Not just in skin color, but in body type, sexual orientation, and so on.”
At Sana, not only are the certified instructors diversified, but each one’s style varies. Viviana likes to call it their “spice” – it’s the special ingredient that makes people want to take their classes.
Students are also free to be who they are. “You can show up no matter what you look like, how you feel, and we’re going to treat you the same. We respect each other. We’re very welcoming.”
Every Friday evening, things really get spicy with its Uncensored classes. “The studios are very artsy, and the art glows in the dark,” she says. “When we turn the lights off and turn the black lights on - the art just shines. If you want to go in there and drop a curse word, drop that curse word.”
Viviana is planning a yoga retreat for 2025 and is also thrilled to announce that Sana will be implementing its own instructor training starting in January of 2025.

Library Card Sign-Up Month
A BACK-TO-SCHOOL ESSENTIAL
BY KIMBERLY BLAKER
WWhat’s the most essential school supply of all? “A library card,” says the American Library Association (ALA). September is Library Card Sign-up Month. The observation began in 1987 when U.S. Secretary of Education William J. Bennett urged a national campaign for all kids to obtain and use a library card. Today’s libraries offer a broad array of free materials, services, and activities for kids and adults alike. Here are just a few great reasons to make the library an integral part of your and your child’s life.
Books, Audiobooks & eBooks
In addition to vast collections of print fiction, non-fiction, and reference books, libraries offer audiobooks on CD, including unabridged editions. Many libraries also provide ebooks in multiple formats.
Periodicals
Newspapers, magazines, and niche periodicals are available for both in-library use and check out.
Computer Games & Software
If your kids are into video games, the library has an array of children’s educational software and video games. You can also find teen and adult video games, instructional and reference software, and productivity software ranging from Microsoft programs to graphic design.
Movies & Films
Today’s libraries offer a great selection of mainstream movies and television series as well as educational, independent, and foreign films on DVD for kids and adults alike.
Music CDs
Music is the universal language. You’ll find a large selection of pop, rock, and country music CDs at the library. You can even introduce your kids to classical, jazz, blues, international music, and more.
Computer & Internet Use
Nearly all libraries offer free computer access for Internet browsing and research. You’ll also likely have access to basic word processing programs, Excel, PowerPoint, and more.
October 2, 6:30pm October 27, 1:00pm
Inter-Library Loan
If you can’t find a book or item you’re looking for, most libraries have inter-library and reciprocal loan programs. Just ask your library if it can request the material from another library for you. Some library systems also have arrangements so you can use your library card at libraries in nearby communities.
Online Catalog
Most libraries have a website with access to their complete catalog. You can browse or search for materials from home to determine their availability before you head out. If an item you want isn’t available, you can usually reserve it or request an inter-library loan right from your computer.
Special Events
A wide array of programs, events, and activities are found at libraries throughout the year. These may include children’s storytimes, computer classes, enrichment programs, book discussion groups, usedbook sales, author events, children’s and teen movies, craft activities, and more.
Kimberly Blaker is a freelance writer. She also owns an online bookshop, Sage Rare & Collectible Books, specializing in out-of-print, scarce, signed, and first editions; fine bindings; ephemera and more at sagerarebooks.com

PHIL CANTOR Exploring Alter Egos
STORY AND PORTRAIT BY DAN EPSTEIN
Naval Officer/Battle of Monmouth
MMany readers of Vicinity Magazine are familiar with the work of photographer (and 2023 Best of Essex Winner) Phil Cantor from both his portraits of families, and those made of local business people. Growing up in Levittown, Long Island, he followed a similar path to that of many photographic professionals. He had a darkroom in high school, and later worked for his college newspaper. After college, he worked in the AudioVisual industry making photographs for the shows, and then branched out into the realm of Corporate and Industrial Communications.
ALTER EGOS Exhibit
You can view these amazing portraits, at the Berkshire Hathaway Gallery in Montclair from September 20 to November 11, 2024.
You can meet Phil Cantor at the opening reception on Friday, September 20, 2024 from 6-8pm.
Moving to Montclair to raise a family over thirty years ago, he was at the forefront of the photojournalistic movement in wedding photography, and shot over 700 weddings in what was a cutting edge style. Now based in a studio in Verona, he concentrates on portraiture.
Less well known are the theme-based Fine Art projects he’s worked on for years. In 2016 he exhibited Close Ups. In that project he made beautifully intimate photographs of very small items, and printed them much larger than life. In 2019, another exhibition, Line of Work, featured portraits inspired by the work of photographer Irving Penn in the 1920’s. Cantor displayed portraits of 44 local people, from his plumber to the mayor of Montclair, each celebrating that person’s vocation.
For the last two years, using a 70 year-old Rolleiflex film camera, Cantor has been photographing people with alter egos. It’s
Smiling Mummer/Mummer Parade
genesis came when he happened upon a Civil War re-enactment at Ringwood Manor and became fascinated by people who found community with other people who shared a common interest in an uncommon culture.
Cantor has made evocative portraits of war re-enactors of different eras, super heroes at ComicCon, Mummers, professional wrestlers, participants at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade, and more. It’s a celebration of each participant while they are engaged with a community of like-minded alter egos. Cantor exposes only 3 or 4 frames in the antique camera, while carefully composing the image. There is no cropping or retouching. “There is a joy,” he says, “in meeting these people.”

MASSAGE THERAPY
TTherapeutic massage is known for helping to relax the body, clear the mind, decrease stress, and even make one look younger by breaking up tight areas. What some may not realize is that research shows massage can be highly effective for chronic pain as well.
Massage therapy has a long history of being used as a medical treatment, with Hippocrates including it in the treatment protocols for the top 800 diseases of Ancient Greece. It alkalizes the bloodstream, increases circulation, and can be effective against diseases that proliferate in an acidic blood condition.
Many individuals have attributed their longevity to regular massages. Bob Hope, George Burns, Rose Kennedy, and even the Queen have all touted the benefits they’ve received from deep tissue massages. This advanced style of massage, often performed by experienced therapists at an instructor level, includes trigger point therapy, lymphatic drainage, myofascial stretching, and hot steam packs to effectively address various soft tissue complaints, including lower back
pain, neck and shoulder complaints, and interscapular knots.
For those seeking this advanced style of massage, Providence Health and Fitness in New Providence on South Street offers medical massage, as well as Swedish, Deep Tissue, Manual Lymph Drainage, and Pregnancy massages. Their team of licensed massage therapists, including Tatyana and Michele, have been effectively treating soft tissue conditions for decades. Whether you’re an athlete, weekend warrior, or someone struggling with soft tissue pain, their packages can significantly improve day-to-day life.

BOOSTING YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM HELPS TO ENHANCE YOUR BODY’S DEFENSES
AA robust and resilient immune system is essential for safeguarding your health. To fortify your immune system and optimize its functionality, consider the following detailed tips:
• Consume a wide range of nutrient-rich foods, including colorful fruits, green leafy vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats. These foods provide essential vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytochemicals crucial for supporting immune function.
• Exercise is not just for physical fitness, it also enhances immune system regulation. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic weekly exercise, complemented by strength training sessions. This commitment to regular exercise will help you optimize your immune system’s functionality.
• Your immune system needs rest as much as your body does. Prioritize restorative sleep, aiming for 7-9 hours per night. Adequate sleep duration and quality are vital for immune system maintenance and optimal functioning. By making sleep a priority, you’re taking a significant step towards fortifying your immune system.
• Limit alcohol consumption and avoid smoking, as these habits can impair immune function and overall health.
• Adopt stress-reducing practices such as mindfulness meditation, deep breathing exercises, yoga, or spending time in nature. Chronic stress can compromise immune function, so minimizing its impact is essential.
• Consume at least 8-10 cups of water daily to ensure adequate hydration. Proper hydration supports the immune system’s ability to function optimally.
• Practice proper hygiene, including regular handwashing with soap and water to prevent the spread of infections and maintain immune health.
• Consider incorporating immune-boosting supplements such as vitamin C, D, zinc, and probiotics into your daily regimen. Consult with a healthcare professional to determine appropriate supplementation based on individual needs.

THE HEALING POWER OF PET THERAPY FOR SENIORS
PPet therapy, also known as animalassisted therapy, is a growing trend in senior care that has numerous benefits for elderly individuals. The concept behind pet therapy is simple but powerful: involving animals in the care and treatment of seniors. This therapy can provide emotional support, companionship, and physical activity for older adults, leading to improved overall well-being.
For many seniors, feelings of loneliness and isolation can be a daily struggle. Having a pet around, even for a short visit, can help alleviate these feelings and provide a sense of connection. Interacting with animals can also trigger the release of endorphins, which can reduce stress and anxiety.
Furthermore, pet therapy can encourage physical activity in seniors. Whether taking a dog for a walk or simply
petting a cat, interaction with animals can promote movement and exercise, which is crucial for maintaining mobility and preventing muscle atrophy in older individuals.
In addition to the emotional and physical benefits, pet therapy can also
have cognitive advantages for seniors with conditions such as Alzheimer’s or dementia. The presence of animals can trigger memories and stimulate conversations, providing mental stimulation and engagement for seniors who may otherwise have limited social interaction.
Opened just a year ago, Sunrise of Livingston offers best-in-class senior care within a modern atmosphere. You’ll love our green, forested surroundings and comfortable, light-filled living spaces. GEMS of WISDOM
BY BARRY FARBER
II recently had the pleasure of interviewing Kenan Thompson for Diamond Minds on Brinx.TV. Before my interview, I was lucky enough to spend some quality time with him and found him to be one of the most grounded celebrities I’ve ever encountered. Kenan has been a cast member on the NBC sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live since 2003, making him the longesttenured cast member in the show’s history.
He had so many gems of wisdom to share about performance under pressure and the attributes of success. What was crystal clear in one segment was what he said about the two keys to failure and the two keys to success. I want to share them with you and elaborate on their importance to our long-term success and well-being.
“Never seem more learned than the people you are with. Wear your learning like a pocket watch and keep it hidden. Do not pull it out to count the hours, but give the time when you are asked.”
– LORD CHESTERFIELD, BRITISH STATESMAN
“Two Keys to Failure:
Greed. Kenan made it very clear that greed can bring people down. I want to share a few quotes and sayings that have guided me through many projects and long-term relationships because their call to action works and shows your willingness to serve others. It enables your long-term relationships to flourish and last. They don’t see your greed because they see your interest in their success as your success. Here’s the first one from the founder of Ralston Purina; “Catch a passion for helping others, and a richer life comes back to you.” When your focus is on elevating others, you, in turn, elevate yourself. We are at our best when providing a valuable service to others. As the late great Earl Nightingale said, “Our rewards in life are in direct proportion to our service.” What are you contributing to the success of others around you? Many sources have said it many times: “You can get anything you want in this life if you just help enough other people get what they want.”
Ego. Many years ago, I spoke with Ken Blanchard, co-author of The One Minute Manager. He told me the acronym for ego was “Edging God Out.” It is an apt description that thinks the world revolves around us. I think many people with big egos feel that it’s essential to maintain your success and show how proud you are of what you’ve accomplished. But later in life, you realize that replacing your ego with quiet confidence is much more effective, such as talking less about what you’ve
done and focusing more on the goals and desires of those around you. There’s a lot to say about someone who listens well and has that inner confidence that grounds them and makes people open up to them. Just because you’re not talking doesn’t mean you lose control of the conversation. It’s the opposite if you position it right.
Two Keys to Success:
Humility. I think this quote says it all by one of the greatest basketball coaches that has ever lived… “Humility is the true key to success. Successful people lose their way at times. They often embrace and overindulge from the fruits of success. Humility halts this arrogance and self-indulging trap. Humble people share the credit and wealth, remaining focused and hungry to continue the journey of success.” - Rick Pitino
Action. Kenan talked about the fact that you can pray all you want but there is still a time that you have to dive in and take action to make things happen. I’ve seen how preparation and action have contributed to achievement over the years as essential for the keys to success, but I’m still boggled by the amount of new knowledge and intelligence that action brings to the table. Yes, they are both invaluable but I now believe in the long run what Kenan believes that action is omnipotent. Take the bumblebee as an example. Short and stubby, the bumblebee doesn’t look very flight-worthy. Indeed, in the 1930’s, French entomologist August Magnam even noted that the insect’s flight is actually impossible, a notion that has stuck in popular consciousness since then. We now know that physics and aerodynamics can explain how the bumblebee flies but the bumblebee never knew that and did so anyway.
Learn from Kenan. Replace greed and ego with humility and action to pave a path that enhances your long-term success.
