his past summer, Boy Scouts from Troop 25 in Florham Park and Madison went on a 12-day adventure through the New Mexico wilderness as part of the Philmont Scout Range High Adventure trek. The Philmont Scout Range is “the Boy Scouts of America’s premier High Adventure base,” according to the Boy Scouts website. Backpacking treks of various lengths and training and service programs like this one challenge Scouts physically and intellectually with more than 214 square miles of hiking trails and land across northern New Mexico. The Scouts were trained in outdoor survival skills, such as water filtration and how to set up camp. Ryan Rauschenberger, a resident of Florham Park and a junior at Seton Hall Preparatory School in South Orange, who served as Crew Chief called the trip, a “once-in-alifetime” opportunity.” He recommends that anyone with the chance should take this trip.

Local Women Step Up to Organize Millburn Cleanup After Ida By Jackie Schatell

W

hen Ida hit, Millburn was hit very hard. The downtown business district was decimated, as were many people’s homes. While hundreds of people began coming down into the business district to help with shovels and brooms, it was chaotic. Recognizing that the cleanup was disorganized, Micole Cohen Richter and Joanna Parker-Lentz, who had planned a number of successful Roctoberfests together, decided to step in and help organize the process. The event is a fundraiser for the Millburn Education Foundation.

“We were inspired that so many people were stepping up to help, but we noticed that some shops were getting more help than others, and we wanted to spread out the help.” —Joanna Parker-Lentz

The women set up shop on the corner of Millburn and Main Street, made spreadsheets, and began communicating with groups via email and Facebook groups. People would stop by to find out where they could help and would be assigned a location. Some people brought food for the volunteers, while others donated goggles, gloves and masks. The local hardware shop, which was also hit, sold items at cost. “The outpouring of generosity was just amazing,” said Micole. When the women became aware of the different neighborhoods needing help, especially the South Mountain one, they began sending volunteers to help get the water and mud out of people’s homes too. Many of these families lost everything and the ladies started a furniture collection and began identifying office open space that was available to businesses that became displaced. They also did a clothing drive. There was so much donated that they had to move the collection from the library to the community congregational church. Next, they will be collecting winter clothes. When asked why they stepped up, Joanna said, “Since we were already heavily into Rocktoberfest planning, we knew we had the combined skill sets and the high-level volunteers in place to move into a disaster relief event mode. The community was in dire need.” 10

left-right: Micole Cohen Richter and Joanna Parker-Lentz “Some people lost everything, the amount of damage to homes and businesses was overwhelming,” said Micole. “Helping feels necessary and we feel driven to go forward. Once we saw what we saw, we could not unsee it.” In addition, the women helped fundraise for a GoFundMe that was started by Joanna’s business, the Jodi and Joanna Group, which as of early October was at $67,000. The ladies are also helping with grant opportunities. What is next? The cleanup is not over and the women want to raise awareness that help is still needed in Millburn for both the business district and residential homes. They think it will take another 3-6 months to get out from under. In addition they are working with the mayor and town administrator to figure out how to plan to make sure this doesn’t happen again. One positive thing to come out of this is that they put together a fundraising concert with Los Lobos at the Papermill Playhouse, in five days, that raised $20,000 for the GoFundMe.

SPREADING KINDNESS One Bouquet of Flowers at a Time By Jackie Schatell

P

reethy Gandhi of Florham Park loves flowers and enjoys bringing joy to others. This year, she took these two passions and combined them by becoming an Ambassador for Kindness via an international program called @ thegrowingkindnessproject. She is one of two people chosen in NJ, for the program which chooses two people per state, per year to participate. To attain this role, Preethy had to fill out an application and write an essay describing why she wanted to participate. She says she will remain in this role for a year and then plans to join the contributing gardener program, where she will grow flowers to share in the community As an Ambassador, Preethy grew Tulips and Anemones in the spring, Rudbeckia and Zinnias in the summer and is now growing Dahlias, which are the signature flowers of the @thegrowingkindnessproject, to use in her bouquets that are delivered to neighbors, seniors, teachers, healthcare workers and anyone that someone contacts her about. Preethy says she has a small yard, and cannot grow a lot of flowers, but she enjoys donating the ones that she grows and creating beautiful bouquets. She feels “good about what she is doing” and says people are “very receptive and appreciative.” She also enjoys meeting new people during deliveries. “I love spreading kindness around,” says Preethy, who says she delivers 2-3 arrangements a week. She adds that she “loves being able to share what she has with others.” She also says she likes being part of the program and taking the Zoom classes they offer on growing flowers and soil management. Preethy would like to encourage others that enjoy growing flowers to join the kindness movement. They don’t have to become Ambassadors, they can become contributing gardeners. She feels people will enjoy sharing what they grow to put smiles on people’s faces. To learn more, or to request having a bouquet delivered in Florham Park or nearby towns, please contact Preethy Antony via Facebook. It just takes a little bit of dirt and a big heart to start Growing Kindness™ in your community!

Salon & Beyond GLAZE Salon is BEAUTY PERSONIFIED By Janis Hashe, photos by Dan Epstein

E

veryone wants to look their best, especially for the holidays. At GLAZE Salon partners Cindi Galiher and Kathy Korab aim to do just that. They have created a warm, welcoming space where a highly skilled stylist will shape the most becoming cut for each clients’ individual face.“Ninety percent of our stylists have more than 20 years of experience,” states Galiher. “When a new client calls or stops by, it is often due to a referral from a satisfied customer,” said Korab. “Desk staff who are well versed in each stylist’s skills, will refer the new client to a stylist that is the perfect fit,” she adds. “New clients always say they cannot believe how beautiful the salon is,” said Galiher, noting that GLAZE provides the same attention to detail and professional services as high-end New York salons. Salon & Beyond (continued from previous page)

GLAZE prides itself on making sure its stylists have access to classes on the latest in cutting techniques, as well as information sessions on new products and how to use them. Galiher notes, “Fall and holiday trends include blue, green, purple and other color highlights—“mermaid-look” hair—as well as the ever-popular ombre fashion.” Korab adds, “We can do anything for anyone.” In its 2,500-square-foot space, GLAZE houses separate sections for color and blowouts and also has nail, eyebrow and lash, as well as waxing services available. The on premise espresso bar offers wine and seltzer for clients. In addition, there is an entire retail section allowing clients to shop for hair products they love, as well as a curated selection of tasteful gift ideas.

Jenifer Waltz and Cindi Galiher

A point of pride for the GLAZE partners is that they carry top-quality product lines that are not available in many places. “We use only the products that we sell, “ states Galiher. Among these are the luxury haircare lines ENJOY, Oribe, and Iles Formula. The salon also carries the Olaplex system that is designed to repair, protect and strengthen hair, as well as a full line of ancillary products for Brazilian blowouts—a GLAZE specialty.

In the salon’s retail section, customers will find many items, including Lafco and Antica Farmacista candles and oil diffusers, “Little Words Project” inspirational bracelets, Peepers reading glasses, CBD-based skincare products and gummies—and Galiher’s own line of jewelry. GLAZE will be holding a “Sip & Shop” holiday event on Sunday, November 14 from 11am-3pm. Galiher and Korab invite new and regular clients to drop in and experience everything the salon has to offer.

For many, a side effect of the COVID-19 infection has been hair loss. GLAZE offers both the Viviscal Pro dietary supplement system, clinically proven to enhance and restore hair growth, as well as the évolis system, that also has proven results. Galiher personally uses and recommends serum-based Aethern, to “transform” skin, hair and nails.

here are many ways parents can promote a love of reading and encourage their kids to read not only during the school year but year-round.

Read to Your Children Begin reading to your child very early. The National Education Association (NEA) suggests infancy is an excellent time to start. As your child grows, encourage their participation in reading the story with or to you. Although your child may not be ready to read, they often memorize some of their favorite books or pages. Making your child an active participant will help develop their love for reading.

Visit the Local Library Think of the library as a big free educational toy store. Help your child choose some books, but also encourage him or her to select some on their own. Your child can also take home audiobooks, video games, videos, and music CDs.

Help Your Child Build a Collection One thing common among reading lovers is how much they enjoy having their own book collection. Help your child grow a personal library of their favorite series, author, or genre. Then give your child a special shelf to store and display the collection.

Play Word Games Look for board, computer, or phone games that help kids develop their reading and spelling skills and vocabulary.

Subscribe Your Child to a Magazine There's a host of kids' magazines on the market and something for every age group. It will give your child something to look forward to each month and build enthusiasm for reading.

Read In Front of Your Kids Show kids that reading isn't just a school requirement, but rather a lifelong activity. Let them see you reading both to learn and for pleasure.

Form a Kids’ Book Club If your child is interested in it, this is a great way to build excitement for reading. You'll want to find kids who are all at about the same reading level. You'll need to decide where to hold the weekly or monthly meetings, which could be at your house, or perhaps your school or public library will provide you space. Set up a reading room. Find a quiet area in your home to designate as the reading area. It should have comfy seating, perhaps even a bean bag or two, pillows, blankets, and good lighting.

Strengths-Based Education Primes Students for Learning By Dr. Kara A. Loftin

A coeducational, independent school grades 6-12

The strength that sets MBS apart is how successfully we focus on engagement—energizing students to immerse themselves actively and deeply in the experience of learning. MBS students aren’t simply covering more content, doing more homework, and taking more tests; they are striving to understand important material more deeply and to take on meaningful challenges. MBS is also exceptional in the attention we pay to each individual and the breadth of opportunity we provide to each. With an emphasis on balance, every student is encouraged to take risks, push into challenging new territory, and explore all their talents.

y moving our thinking from difference as a deficit to one of capacity-building with classroom environment changes to support learning, we enhance educational experiences and leverage strengths for deeper learning and meaning-making. The Craig School balances our students’ education by providing ample instructional time for addressing their greatest needs while also supporting the development of strengths, all the while recognizing that our students are fully human, ever-evolving, and full of ability. At The Craig School we cultivate and support our students’ positive identities as learners. We partner with parents to build student capacity through targeted, personalized learning experiences which remove barriers to learning. Finally, we design the broader curriculum for greater educational access and participation from each student. While the challenges of learning differences are real, we remove limitations by providing the supports and services uniquely designed for the learning needs of the individual student, we build upon their strengths and capabilities, and we lay the foundation to thrive in learning and in life.

Pets in Need of a Forever Home Here’s Rocky Roo

Kittens, Kittens, Kittens… There’s always a rainbow after the storm. These little kittens came to this rescue as bottle babies after Hurricane Ida and they are now ready for their next adventure. FIV/FELV negative, first kitten shot, 10 weeks old and full of cuddles and kisses.

Rocky Roo is an eternally happy, enthusiastic guy that just wants to have a place to call his own. He loves to play and run, but is happy just to hang out on the couch with you, too. He’s about two or three years old and weighs in at 80 pounds. He is housebroken, neutered, update to date on shots, crate trained and gets along with everyone (except cats.) He would be a good fit for almost anyone as long as they don’t have small children or cats (eww!) If you are looking for a loving, wiggly dog that will make you smile and be your forever friend, you can read more about Rocky Roo and other potential pets on the website. s a young boy, Dr. Kurt Jackson, a vitreo-retinal surgeon, pictured himself seeing patients in his own office and caring for them like family. “That’s what really drove me to open my own practice,” he says. “So many things in medicine are moving to volume care, and people are becoming numbers. I want my patients to have an alternative to that and know they have my complete attention.” At Jackson Eye Care, Dr. Jackson helps manage and care for issues such as macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, retinal detachment, retinal tears and complications of hypertension in the eyes. His courteous and accommodating office staff also makes patients feel cared for and special. His wife, Kai, is the office administrator.

Dr. Kurt Jackson

“Along with getting that personalized care, we are also technologically advanced,” he says. “I’m one of the first, if not the first,

private practice retina specialist that has the new wireless laser system called Norlase, which is a lot more comfortable for the patient.” A general ophthalmologist since 2007 and a retina specialist since 2009, Dr. Jackson finds helping people with something as vitality important as their vision extremely rewarding. “They say that eyes are the windows to the soul, and that has certain physical and even some spiritual ramifications, but the eyes are truly tissues that you can look at and get an idea of an individual’s general health.” Dr. Jackson’s patients appreciate his caring manner and professional expertise. In addition to English, Dr. Jackson also speaks fluent Spanish.

She explains, “Composite resin is a solid mass made up mostly of silica particles, which are similar to glass chips. The resin is more solid than Play-Doh, but it is pliable enough to be sculpted. It is also highly polishable and comes in many different shades of white.” The resin can be bonded to the tooth enamel on the front teeth after braces come off, if there are white brace marks showing on the teeth. It can be applied to old crowns with unappealing black borders showing around the gum line, so crowns do not need to be replaced for cosmetic reasons. When roots become concave due to gum recession and root erosion, composite resin can be added to prevent further loss of tooth structure. It can also be used to enlarge teeth to correct the bite, or to repair broken denture teeth. She says, “I love composite resin because it is extremely versatile and esthetically pleasing.”

Dealing with Conflicts

W

e all deal with conflicts in some form or another at work, in our relationships, and during our daily interactions with others. These conflicts will always be present for those in leadership positions or anyone striving for high achievement.

“The real and most dangerous opponents we face are fear, anger, confusion, doubt, and despair. If we overcome those enemies that attack us from within, we can attain a true victory over any attack from without.” —Morihei Ueshiba Here are several ways to deal with conflicts while reducing the stress that comes with them:

1

Avoid anger and greed and replace them with concentration and awareness. To have a grounded, focused and calm demeanor in the face of difficulty is admired and extremely effective. The next time you find yourself in any type of conflict, listen to what the other person is saying. Ask about his or her position in order to better understand it. Sometimes there can simply be a communication problem that can be dissolved by letting the other person talk. When we let anger and greed become our emotions, the conflict increases with both our opponent and ourselves.

2

Breathe. In every martial art, discipline breathing is one of the most critical factors for control and power. Yet it is one of the last things we think of when confronted with conflict. Breathing calms you, brings oxygen to your blood and heart, improves mental observation and concentration, and ultimately reduces stress.

Try this breathing method recommended by Sensei Greg O’Connor: “Breath in through your nose and let it settle in your belly by doing deep abdominal breathing or diaphragmatic Barry Farber breathing—allowing the diaphragm to move up and down for fuller capacity breathing. Once you let your breath settle to your lower belly relax your shoulders then allow your lower belly to expand and “breathe like a baby.”

3

Put the situation in perspective. When you really look at the reason behind the argument, is it worth it? How many times have you said to yourself, “I can’t believe what we used to argue about.” Look at the bigger picture and realize it can be better to forget it and move on. I find great satisfaction when researching and interviewing people who have faced extreme adversity because it helps to put my own life in perspective. No matter what you’re going through ask yourself if this conflict is worth pursuing or better to be put to rest.

4

Become comfortable in your own skin. Having confidence in who you are will help you to deal with people without getting defensive. Sometimes we spend too much time with people who actually enjoy creating conflicts and thrive on negativity. Learn to separate real conflicts from negative attitudes and people who want to bring you down. Some of the greatest decisions are not just picking the right mentors to surround yourself with, but also moving away from the people who don’t provide any value. Famous World War II admiral, William “Bull” Halsey, said, “Touch a thistle timidly, and it pricks you; grasp it boldly, and its spines crumble. All problems become smaller if you don’t dodge them but confront them.”

Barry Farber is a best-selling author, an award winning radio and television host as well as an agent and marketing consultant for corporations, professional athletes, and entertainers. He’s also the creator and marketer of the FoldzFlat® Pens. His latest release is an inspirational children’s book “In search of the magic tree” available at www.barryfarber.com
