Jagger Cohen, a senior at Summit High School, loves volunteering so much that she gave up being the coxswain on her school’s crew team to have more time to volunteer. She began volunteering during her freshman year, with thepowerofblue. org, which gives teens a place to get involved in their community, create awareness, and connect with teens from all over the world. She is now head of the NJ Chapter. In addition, she volunteers for Giving and Receiving Assistance for our Community’s Essentials (GRACE), and at Imagine, a center for coping with loss, for children, young adults, and families dealing with the death of a parent, sibling, or child. Imagine provides free peer grief support year-round for as long as needed. She says she enjoys connecting with the kids at Imagine, and being part of their journey. In addition, she is a member of the English Language Learners (ELL) club at school.

The Smolyn family of Summit is selling luminaries for the holiday season for $2.50 each. “It is a beautiful sight to see the luminaries line curbs and walkways all around town for the holidays,” says Colleen McKenna (Smolyn), whose family has been selling luminaries as a fundraiser for Red Door Community, formerly Gilda’s Club, since 2003. Red Door Community provides free cancer support for cancer patients and their families. They chose to support Red Door in Colleen’s brother John McKenna’s memory because Red Door was so helpful to him during his cancer diagnosis at 40. Light up the Holidays with Luminaries is run solely by volunteers—with 100% of the proceeds going to Red Door Community. “A special thank you to our volunteers and Imperial Dade, Dreyer’s Lumber, and Candle Artisans for their yearly donations,” says Coleen. Jewish Federation is Offering Its Highest-Ever Grants to New Campers
O
One Happy Camper NJ (OHCNJ), a division of Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ, is providing up to $1,500 per child, (increased from $1,000 in previous years), toward tuition at more than 160 overnight camps across North America including traditional camps, specialty camps, and teen tours. Eligible new campers must apply by December 31, 2023 to receive this added bonus. OHCNJ also provides free, personalized guidance to find the right camp. OHCNJ has provided over $1 million in camp grants and scholarships to Morris County families over the past 10 years. “Jewish camp offers a life-changing experience of new friends, excellent activities, building independence, and connecting with Judaism, with a special sense of community and spirit at a time when it’s more important than ever,” shares OHCNJ Director Tracy Levine, of Millburn. Chatham Resident Collects Costumes for the Needy
I
In coordination with Weichert Realtors in Chatham, Jodi Frohnapfel, a fourth grade teacher and an agent at Weichert, ran a collection drive in October to collect new and gently used Halloween costumes for NJ Cares, which provides the costumes to needy children. When she registered with the charitable organization, she learned that they had 7,600 requests for costumes. She says she got a pit in her stomach when she realized how many people needed help. “It feels great to help others. We take for granted how fortunate we are,” states Jodi, who says that the drive was successful and she hopes to run it again next year.
Short Hills Resident Publishes 4th Book
L
Lee Kelly has published her 4th novel, called With Regrets, which was published by Crooked Lane. She says it is a domestic survival thriller with nuances about a town like Short Hills, which is where she resides. Essentially, the story is about a group of friends gathering for dinner and then a cataclysmic event hits. “It’s like The Real Housewives face an apocalypse,” she says, of the plot, which is described as being a thriller with dark secrets and betrayals. She also likens the story to recent hit films – Big Little Lies and Birdbox. Prior to becoming a full-time writer, Lee was an entertainment lawyer, who only wrote at night. However, while she was out of the office for maternity leave eight years ago, she started writing and hasn’t stopped since. This book, along with her other three books, is available anywhere books are sold.

Group Knits for Friendship and a Cause
For 23 years, Arlene Kaplan, of Long Hill Township, has been knitting with the Gates Avenue Knitters, a group that started meeting in homes on Gates Avenue until the group became too big and moved to the Long Hill Township Library in 2000. The weekly attendance is between 15 to 25 knitters, with the same core members still active. Annually, they knit approximately 400 hats that are distributed to local food pantries and soup kitchens. The hats are also sold in the library from Nov. 1 until the end of Feb., for $10 each, to raise funds for library programs. Last year, the library sold 110 hats, raising $1100. The group is displaying their knitting projects in the library showcases in November. Arlene loves the group and says they talk, knit, and share ideas. They also teach those interested in learning to knit and give out free yarn and needles. The Gates Avenue Knitters meet on Mondays, from 1-3pm, in the library. Beginners and experienced knitters are welcome. New Providence Resident Strives to Spread Alzheimer’s Awareness

Jim Madden, a former two-term New Providence councilman, is passionate about cycling and spreading Alzheimer’s awareness. During the pandemic, while looking for something to do for physical and mental exercise, he started cycling and hasn’t stopped since. Over the past two years, he has participated in Ride to EndALZ events all over the country and raised over $40,000 that has gone directly into funding research for the Alzheimer’s Association. He has now been among the top five cycling event fundraisers in the country over the past two years.

I’M RIDING TO END ALZHEIMER’S AND MY HOPE IS TO INCREASE AWARENESS ABOUT ENDING ALZHEIMER’S IN OUR LIFETIME, – JIM MADDEN Two years ago, the Alzheimer’s Association asked Jim if he’d like to join the Nation’s Capital Ride Committee. “They had me at, ‘Hello,’” he says. This past year, he participated in two races. In May, he rode in his second End Alzheimer’s cycling event in Wimberley, Texas, where he came in 8th place in fundraising. This past May, he rode in Morven Park, Virginia where he came in second place for fundraising out of 300 participants. On May 4th, 2024, he will be cycling in the Nation’s Capital End Alzheimer’s cycling event. He reached out to Christopher Weber, Ph.D., director, Global Science Initiatives, who oversees efforts to advance the scientific agenda of the Alzheimer’s Association, 8 | Vicinity Magazine | November 2023
the world’s largest nonprofit funder of Alzheimer’s research, with more than $360 million currently invested in over 1,000 projects in 53 countries—to see how he could help. This led to Jim advocating to get bills passed in his legislative district, and asking the FDA to approve, and CMS to reconsider paying for two breakthrough drugs that will help reduce cognitive loss by 37% for people with the disease.
“My fraternity brother’s wife Jeanne Mancuso is fighting Alzheimer’s courageously. I ride for Jeanne and the parents of my fraternity brothers from Beta Theta Pi – Rutgers University that we will have better treatment options and preventative solutions. The Betas have really come front and center to support our efforts to End Alzheimer’s,” says Jim.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, the number of Americans living with Alzheimer’s is growing—and growing fast. More than 6 million Americans of all ages have Alzheimer’s. An estimated 6.7 million Americans age 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s in 2023. Seventythree percent are 75 or older. Knowing these statistics, and having friends with the disease, has given Jim a charge to push even harder for Alzheimer’s awareness and a cure.
Jim hopes to inspire people to support this cause by having them sponsor him in a race, run a sponsored one themselves, write to their assembly person, and/or get swabbed to enter a match program to see if they have a predisposition for Alzheimer’s. All of the data collected will help with research. “I’m riding to end Alzheimer’s and my hope is to increase awareness about ending Alzheimer’s in our lifetime,” he says.

Short Hills Resident is Making a Difference Through Organ and Tissue Donation Advocacy
M
Missy Schwartz Rodriguez of Short Hills, never thought she’d be running a transplant-related scholarship fund— let alone even talking about the liver transplant she had when she was just 10 years old. Yet, here she is at almost 50 years old, running Missy’s Miracle Scholarship Fund, a Family Fund supported by the New Jersey Sharing Network. The Fund was created almost 10 years ago in celebration of the 30th anniversary of Missy’s liver transplant. Following Missy’s passion and experience as a college counselor, Missy’s fund directly supports college scholarships to high school students whose lives have been impacted by organ and tissue donation. This scholarship is available in every high school in New Jersey. She says that when she had a liver transplant, it was experimental surgery, and wasn’t something that was talked about. She wasn’t sick; one day, she just woke up and suddenly needed a transplant. Missy had a few complications over the years but kept her condition private, only telling her closest friends and family out of necessity. Today, she feels no stigma in talking about her organ transplant. In fact, she feels it is important to tell people her story. Missy founded the Missy’s Miracle Club at Millburn High School, where the students hold fundraisers for Missy’s scholarship fund. Missy understands the importance of supporting other charitable causes by organizing collections for hurricane victims of Ida and Maria, providing baked goods for first responders during the Covid-19 pandemic, and currently donating funds to support Israeli troops. Next month there will be a fundraiser at Indiana University where ZBT and AEPHI will combine to spread awareness about organ donation and transplantation. Missy also has won multiple gold medals as a tennis player at the Transplant Games of America as a member of Team Liberty. Missy’s Miracle’s latest achievement is an invitation to ride on the Donate Life float on Jan. 1st, in the Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, California. Missy says she strives to be a role model for people on the transplant list, showing them there is hope; and that she does the same for donor families, showing them how valuable their gift is, as it enables recipients to go on to live healthy active lives—and give back. “I’m so proud of the work I am doing, and I’m thrilled to know that I am making a difference in people’s lives through organ and tissue donation advocacy,” says Missy.

There are lots of opportunities for families and friends to seize the moment for selfies and whimsical photographs alongside “Champ,” the towering eightfoot-tall polar bear. And last but certainly not least, visitors can take memorable photos with jolly ol’ Saint Nick. You can’t have a great event without some great food and beverages. Sweet tooth enthusiasts are invited to take a seat at the S’mores Station and toast marshmallows over a comfortably warm fire pit. Double S Smokehouse will be cooking up its fantastic barbeque, and reservations will be accepted. And if the need to feed is still there, visitors can stop by the Ice Cream Shop and Hot Chocolate

For the 57th consecutive year, the Santa Claus Shop will open its doors to area families to provide complementary holiday shopping. The Shop serves more than 400 low-income families and senior citizens from Summit, New Providence, Berkeley Heights, and other local communities. This year’s Santa Claus Shop will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 587 Springfield Avenue in Summit. Families will be offered shopping hours by invitation only during the first week of December. The Santa Claus Shop is chaired by Summit residents, Michelle Kalmanson, Alison MacMillan, Katie Orr and Elizabeth Somerlot and co-chaired by Jen Adel, Amanda Darnowski, Jenny Groves and Corinne White. The Santa Claus Shop exists solely on donations and volunteers. With the monetary donations from area residents, local organizations and businesses, the Santa Claus Shop can purchase the gifts that allow less fortunate neighbors to experience the joy of holiday giving without financial burden.

When Adrienne Rich established A&R Interiors in 1979, she chose an old movie theatre in an art deco building in Morris County. In this building, she highlighted her vision to create unique designs reflecting the personalities of her clients. Likewise, when her daughter, Allyson, joined the company in 2016, she, too, searched for an unusual space. She chose an old gas station in Denville built in 1906 to expand and continue her mother’s vision. Today, in its Denville location, A&R Interiors includes an expanded fabric showroom, furnishings, and other home décor. Allyson and her design team have extensive experience in all design aspects—from planning to selection to installation. The company remains steadfast to its original mission to personalize, individualize, and specialize each space.
To begin, the designer interviews the prospective client to determine their needs, then considers priorities, budget, and lifestyle. Based on the clients’ goals, the team provides a complete design concept including any necessary construction as well as layering in all additional furniture accessories, wall décor, lighting and window treatments needed to make a house a home. The next stage includes construction and painting while awaiting the arrival of merchandise. Wallcoverings, floorcovering, and window treatments are installed prior to the arrival of the furniture and finishing touches. “We make everything beautiful,” says Allyson, “but first it must be functional.” “Our real signature is that we don’t repeat designs in any residential or commercial properties. Each property is unique,” says Allyson. “We make each space come alive.”

“My imagery begins with still life photographs of electronics such as computer power supplies and circuit boards that I embed in ice. I then use combinations of painting and photography to create works in oil, soft pastel, mixed media and sculpture. Canfield adds, “Some of my artwork is created entirely in soft pastel on paper, and other pieces are a hybrid of oil and acrylic paint merged with elements from my digital collages and photographs that I transfer by hand to canvas or wood panels. Toggling back and forth between digital and analog techniques allows me to balance the unique, handmade qualities of painting with the innovations of digital media.” Her works takes you on a trip which is a once a high-tech vision and an abstract dreamscape. In her art you witness the roaring contrast of hyper-realism and pure abstraction. Describing her sculptures she says, “I stack layered, transparent images mounted to plexiglass that creates an illusion of deep space. The depth of these works speaks to how deeply embedded technology is in our lives and reflects my ongoing interest in the conflict between the technological, or manmade, and the organic quality of the natural world.”

computer frozen in ice, contrasted with abstract painting that almost feels like interior of our own bodies. We are so physically unlike the computers that we use daily, and yet, they are in their way, part of us. As we look at Wired, a soft pastel drawing on paper, we are again confronted with the contrast of computer pieces, frozen in ice. This time drawn entirely by the artist. And again, Canfield forces us to confront an ongoing contrast in our lives, and does so by capturing our attention with a pastel drawing that so beautiful, it defies us to look away. Finally in Neon Remix, a dimensional work wherein she has layered transparent images in sequence, and placed them in a box lighting them from behind so that the images are in different contrast to each other depending on what angle you view them from. It’s both a flat work, and a sculpture at the same time further echoing her message about extreme contrasts in our world. Regardless of the specific medium of any given piece of hers you’re looking at, it has a resounding and poignant message, and will capture your attention by it’s own sheer beauty. Signs Your Pet Has Dental Issues

Pets use body language and other cues to let their owners know how they are feeling. While certain actions, such as a vigorously wagging tail signaling that a dog is quite happy, are easy to read, it’s not always so easy to determine how a pet is feeling. Pet parents who are trying to provide the best care possible recognize that pets may make them aware of certain health issues. Diseases of the mouth may cause issues elsewhere in the body if left untreated. Fortunately for pet owners, dental issues are often easily recognized.
1. Visible Problems Take a peek inside of the pet’s mouth. Animal Wellness magazine says that if there’s a significant accumulation of tartar (yellow or brown patches on the tops of teeth along the gum line), or if the gums are inflamed and red, periodontal disease may be to blame. Traces of blood in the mouth also can indicate that there is a problem. Pets don’t always like their mouths touched, so if your pet is being difficult, have a vet conduct a comprehensive oral health and treatment appointment (COHAT).
2. Halitosis Bad breath is a strong indicator of a dental problem. Halitosis may stem from tooth decay and gum issues, as well as gastrointestinal problems. In either case, it’s best to address a pet’s bad breath with a veterinarian.
3. Refusing to Eat There are many reasons a pet may not want to eat, and a dental problem may be one of them. Painful teeth and gums can make eating challenging, so the animal may avoid food. Refusing to eat can lead to weight loss and malnutrition, so it’s best to nip this issue in the bud.
4. Less Grooming Cats spend around 10 to 15 percent of their days grooming. Dental pain can make grooming challenging. Therefore, if your cat is grooming less or looks unkempt, it may be due to dental problems. Great Vet says 85 percent of cats over the age of three have some form of dental disease.
5.Sensitive Mouth Your pet may yelp, bite or scratch if you touch around the mouth area when there is a dental problem at play. Drooling excessively or dropping food from the mouth also are signs that things are awry. Pets can experience periodontal disease and other dental conditions. Staying aware of signs of dental issues can keep pets healthy.

A careful consideration of lifestyle can ensure potential pet owners find an animal they’re fully capable of caring for. A pet who aligns with the household dynamic can increase the likelihood of a successful pet-owner relationship.
Consider time constraints. People can be honest about their schedules and how pets can fit in. A person who works many hours or travels often may not be able to have a high-maintenance pet. Animals that do not require much interaction, such as aquarium fish or reptiles, may be better fits.
Consider your interests. It can be beneficial to find a pet who aligns with one’s interests and hobbies, as this can make the connection even stronger. A person who likes to hike may benefit from a pet that can handle long periods traversing the great outdoors. Factor in budget. Pets can be expensive. Exotic pets, such as macaws, may have large expenses for specialty vet care and cages. If money is tight, a pet that has minimal expenses might be a smarter move. Assess your personal health.
Someone with allergies may have to avoid furry pets because dander and fur may trigger allergic reactions. Mobility issues can make it challenging for someone to walk a dog every day, making a cat who is relatively independent a more practical choice.

Tips to Help Children Learn a Foreign Language
The benefits of bilingualism are undeniable, but learning a foreign language can be challenging. However, that challenge could be less significant for youngsters. Though there are different theories regarding why children seem to learn languages more readily than adults, Dr. Eleonore Smalle of Tilburg University in the Netherlands indicates that adults tend to translate from their first language when trying to learn a new language. It’s important to note that researchers, including Dr. Smalle, feel that children may find it easier to learn a foreign language up to adolescence, at which time their conscious memory begins to develop more strongly. So, parents who want to help their children learn a foreign language have a relatively long window of time to get that ball rolling before kids could find it more challenging. Parents also can try some additional strategies to help kids learn a foreign language. 30 | Vicinity Magazine | November 2023
Bring lessons home from the classroom.
Read books in the language the child is learning.
Children learning a foreign language in school or with a private tutor can be encouraged to bring those lessons home and continue to develop those skills in a fun way. Play games in a foreign language at home on family game night. Young children just beginning foreign language lessons can be encouraged to count to 10 when playing hide-and-seek at home.
This could be tricky if parents are not bilingual. However, in that scenario, reading books to children in a foreign language provides a great way to reverse roles and let children teach their parents everything they’ve learned from their teachers or tutors. Keep stories simple and even seek recommendations from teachers or tutors.
Shop for groceries in a foreign language. When grocery shopping with children in tow, parents can point to foods around the store and ask kids to say each item in the foreign language they’re learning. Make a list before going to the store and reward kids who name all of the items on the list with a special treat at checkout.
The benefits of bilingualism are significant. Parents can try various strategies to ensure foreign language lessons learned in the classroom are reinforced at home.

Recently, I have been exploring the concept of Dharma. Dharma is often associated with someone who has mastered “life”—someone who has found a revered Guru, someone whom you need to travel to India or remote Islands to meet. We need to demystify the concept of Dharma and its meaning— because dharma is attainable for all of us, in fact it is right in front of our jaded eyes if we understand what dharma is. Finding ultimate contentment is not as difficult as it may seem. What is required is to release the impact of what other’s opinion may have on you and listen to the subtle voices you hear in your mind’s eye—those voices you hear when you are alone and vulnerable to truth. What is required, is STRENGTH, this strength is necessary at moments to continue the path that you know is “right for you” as opposed to the path that others think is proper. Trust me, you will find those that will not support your mission, those that are naive to the concept of dharma or happiness, those who simply do not understand; IGNORE THEM! I can say for certain that I have always traveled the more difficult path, a trail that has had extreme difficulties and a terrain that was certainly not clear, with a known destination. However, what I have experienced is that my intuition or spirit guides may know more than my over stimulated, influenced mind may have given me. Yoga, meditation, self-study, and honesty brought me to the living in the NOW.

TWO THOUGHTS BEFORE YOU CHOOSE A MENTOR

Mentors are all around us. It’s always a good idea to have a few wise advisors to run your ideas by that have the experience and expertise to recommend the best path for your situation. But sometimes you have to be very selective about who you choose to follow and where you look for answers. Here are two stories that remind us to look carefully and not to forget about our most powerful source of knowledge.
The Lonely Game of Follow the Follower Years ago, in a small store on Main Street, a shopkeeper placed a large grandfather clock in his front window. The next morning, he saw a man walk by, take out his pocket watch, adjust the watch, put it back in his pocket and walk away. Every single morning for the next four years, the shopkeeper observed this morning ritual. Then one morning the shopkeeper was out sweeping the sidewalk when the man passed by, took out his watch, adjusted it, and put it back in his pocket. “Excuse me,” said the shopkeeper, “but I’ve been watching you do this every morning for four years now. Can you tell me why?” “Certainly,” said the man. “I’m the foreman down at the mill. I blow the quitting whistle at five o’clock every day, and I want to be sure my people get out on time.” “You’re kidding,” said the shopkeeper. “I’ve been setting my grandfather clock to your five o’clock whistle all these years!” The shopkeeper and the mill foreman, like many of us in today’s society, were caught up in a game called “follow the follower.” Instead of conducting our own investigation or finding someone who truly has the qualities we wish to emulate, we take on the group mentality. We want to be ourselves, but we’re afraid to be “different.” There’s nothing inherently wrong with following. It’s one of the best ways to learn. High achievers are constantly studying other people and their methods of accomplishment. The difference is that they are very particular about the people they choose to learn from. They look for people whose values match their own and who have achieved excellence in their field. They surround themselves with models of success.

Maybe You’re Looking in the Wrong Place A Hindu legend says that once upon the Earth all people were gods. However, they abused their powers. Brahma, who was the god of all gods, decided that the devine spirit should be taken away from mankind and hidden away where no one would ever find it and abuse it again. One of Brahma’s gods advised that it be hidden deep beneath the earth. Brahma said, no, man would eventually dig deep enough. Another god said they should sink it to the bottom of the ocean. “No,” said Brahma, “eventually man would learn to dive deep enough.” Another god suggested taking it up to the highest mountain top. “No,” said Brahma again, “for someday man will learn to climb to the highest peak.” The gods were now at a loss and had no more suggestions. “There is nowhere to hide it where man cannot find it,” they said. “Yes, there is,” said Brahma, “We will hide it deep within man himself. He will never think to look for it there.” And ever since then, man has been digging beneath the earth, diving into the ocean, and climbing the highest mountains, looking for what is hidden deep within himself. We can, and should, look to others for aid, advice, and encouragement. But in the end, we must look inside, for it is only there that we will find the spirit of the true achiever. Inside ourselves, in our thoughts, and our hearts, we hold the belief that we can achieve our greatest dreams. We only have to look deep enough.
