Millburn Teen Completes Air Force Pilot Training Familiarization Course

High School rising 10th grader, Elias Bikales, 15, has completed a Civil Air Patrol program, where he trained side-by-side with Air Force pilot trainees. The program, held this July at Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi, is called Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training Familiarization Course. It gives cadets a one-week taste of what Air Force pilot candidates learn over the course of a year. Elias, who is now referred to as Cadet Second Lieutenant because he moved up in rank to become a commissioned cadet officer during his more than three years of membership, trained with military flight simulators, pilot oxygen masks, spinning machines, and other high-tech equipment. Separately, Elias is working toward a glider pilot license, and hopes to begin learning to fly powered aircraft next year. He may use this summer’s training toward a career in aerospace engineering, civilian or military piloting or other fields with an aviation focus.

Summit First Aid Squad Celebrates 60th Anniversary

TheSummit Volunteer First Aid Squad is celebrating its 60th anniversary. The Squad responds to over 2,000 incidents a year, operating 24/7/365 for everything from July 4th celebrations to hurricanes and blizzards. Their staff responds to 911 calls at no cost to Summit or the patients. Fully funded through donations, all members are volunteers. Marking six decades of service, the Squad is focusing on outreach, educational programs, and member recruitment. “As the Squad begins its seventh decade, we are actively seeking new members to our winning team,” says Laura Benevento, Board Member and Training Lieutenant. NaomiKazzi is an Australian full-time comedian, actor, and writer who recently moved to Millburn and started a career in comedy. She says that she enjoys making people laugh and infuses her experiences abroad, life in America, life with her family, and parenting into her comedy acts. “I love what I do because I can turn the most mundane experiences into something funny that makes people laugh,” she says. “The world can be a very stressful place and it is important to remember that laughter can be the best medicine. It brings us together and gives us what we need right now because of the isolation caused by the pandemic.” Naomi has performed stand-up comedy at the Broadway Club in NYC, Gotham Comedy Club in NYC, and the Comedy Cove in Springfield. The Connection to Celebrate its Centennial with a Gala

TheConnection, located at 79 Maple Street, in Summit, which was founded as the YWCA of Summit in support of women and families, with the mission of providing programming for the community, has officially begun its Centennial year celebration. It will be hosting a Centennial Gala on November 19 at Canoe Brook Country Club with a goal of raising awareness and funds to help ensure that The Connection remains accessible, regardless of individual economic circumstances. Fire Prevention Week’s 100th Anniverary

Thisyear’s Fire Prevention Week TM (FPW) October 9-15, 2022. This years FPW campaign, “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escapeTM,” works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe from home fires.

“Today’s homes burn faster than ever. You may have as little as two minutes (or even less time) to safely escape a home fire from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Your ability to get out of a home during a fire depends on early warning from smoke alarms and advance planning,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of Outreach and Advocacy of The National Fire Prodection Association® (NFPA®).

• Make sure your plan meets the needs of all your family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.

• Smoke alarms should be installed inside every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every levelof your home. Smoke alarms should be interconnected so when one sounds, they all sound.

• Know at least two ways out of every room, if possible. Make sure all doors and windows open easily.

• Have an outside meeting place a safe distance from your home where everyone should meet.

• Practice your home fire drill at least twice a year with everyone in the household, including guests. Practice at least once during the day and at night.

Chatham Resident Launches Next Gen Platform to Empower Cancer Patients

Arin of Chatham is determined to help newly diagnosed cancer patients and their families achieve better treatment results. She says that when someone receives a diagnosis, they are completely overwhelmed by the volumes of complex information to sift through, it is hard to focus and understandably, they are scared. Most people don’t know what questions to ask their doctors or rely solely on their doctors.The unique benefits of the XpertPatient experience are threefold— visitors can learn about their specific cancer diagnosis using their preferred format (text, audio or video), they can compare their FDA-approved treatment options based upon their type and stage of cancer, and they can prepare a tailored discussion guide to prepare for upcoming doctor appointments.

Risa says her platform is “all about empowerment.” It has been purposely designed to enable newly diagnosed cancer patients and their caregivers to better collaborate with their doctors, an approach that Risa says “has been proven to achieve better treatment results.” She explains that this year, almost two million people in the US will be diagnosed with cancer—57,000 here in New Jersey, and that more than half of them won’t feel confident having treatment option conversations with their doctors. In addition, financial concerns plague the starting and staying

on treatment, while more than 80% of financial support made available by pharmaceutical companies isn’t used. “XpertPatient is on a mission to change that,” she says.

She says she wants to educate patients so they are better prepared to collaborate with their treatment teams. For the past year, she worked tirelessly with patients, doctors, nurses, and cancer advocates from all over the world to

Millburn Resident HELPS THOUSANDS OF KIDS

TracyLevine of Millburn is the director of One Happy Camper NJ at Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ, which over the past 12 years has provided over $3.5 million in One Happy Camper grants and needbased Rocker Family scholarships to local youth, enabling them to attend summer camp. The focus of the program is on families with a Jewish background; however, all children are welcome at Jewish camps.

The sources of One Happy Camper funding include the Paula and Jerry Gottesman Greater MetroWest Jewish Camp Endowment of the Jewish Community Foundation, Federation’s UJA Annual Campaign, generous local donors, and funds raised through the annual fall fundraising event—which this year is called CAMPERTHON. The event consists of the 5th annual Tour de Summer Camps NJ bike ride, plus over

20 camp challenges including a Color Run, Ninja Challenge course, sports, arts and crafts, science activities, a daffodil service activity to honor the 1.5 million children that died during the Holocaust, and more. The public is invited to attend the event that will be held on October 23 at Camp Deeny Riback in Morris County. Information on the event can be found at camperthonNJ.org. The event is being hosted by 15 top camps supporting the local area.

“I am really pumped for the event,” says Tracy. “We love our bike ride that we do every year, and we are excited to have the public participate in CAMPERTHON and experience the fun that camp offers. There will be great energy, fun activities, and a joyous spirit at the event, which supports a wonderful cause. People will get a taste of camp in October.”

Tracy explains that in 2009, she made the shift from the corporate world to launch Federation’s One Happy Camper NJ program to help more kids attend camp. Since then, Tracy and her team have been meeting with families from Essex, Morris, Sussex, and Union Counties throughout the year to help them find the best day camps, sleepaway camps, and teen programs for their children to attend. She says, “Especially in the current world, the opportunity to connect in-person, disconnect from screens, enjoy new activities, and build independence is so important.”

“We truly believe there is a Jewish camp for every child, and we are here to help them find and afford it,” says Tracy. “I feel honored to do what I do as it impacts many lives in a truly transformative way.”

Witches and Vampires: How the Dead Speak

AsHalloween rolls around, we pull out the plastic skeletons without thought to what they represent. Skeletons are ubiquitous with holiday décor, but most people don’t realize how much we learn about our past from human skeletal analysis. The study of human remains in their archaeological context, known as bioarchaeology, provides tantalizing insights into past lives, customs, and beliefs.

This Halloween METC, together with bioarcheologist Dr. Jill Rhodes, is taking the history conversation back over thousands of years to look at some of the more unusual lessons we can learn from the dead. How far back can we see the belief in zombies, witches, or vampires? How can we identify them in the archaeological record? What unusual rituals were employed to gain an advantage in combat, or to ensure a good harvest? At this event participants will gather and hear the stories of the dead.

Wagner Farm Arboretum’s Brite Nites

The11th annual Wagner Farm Arboretum’s Halloween-themed “Brite Nites” event showcases an elaborate display of intricately and creatively handcarved and LED lighted pumpkin scenes. Updated displays and new installations planned for 2022 include a jungle walk-thru and a skeleton bike tour!

Wagner Farm Arboretum is non-profit organization that seeks to enrich, educate and inspire the community by increasing environmental awareness and recreational opportunities. EMPOWERS WOMEN TO LOOK AND FEEL GREAT

Watley was a sports agent, single mom and marketing mentor for entrepreneurs, when she decided she wanted to open up a brick and mortar business. “I didn’t want to be the mentor that just says ‘Do as I say.’ I wanted it to be, “Do as I do,” she said.

So Elaina started thinking about what she loved. Her lashes. She valued the time she saved by getting her lashes styled each week.

For nine months, Elaina researched franchises and visited lash technicians across the globe until she found Amazing Lash Studio and bought her first franchise in Montclair. She quickly fell in love with not only the lash business, but also working with women. Her vision was to empower her female employees through spotlighting financial literacy.

Jannet Parra, now Elaina’s business partner, was one of the women working at Amazing Lash Studio in Montclair. The two women sat together and looked at Jannet’s finances, created budgets and plans and when Jannet had saved enough money, Elaina encouraged her to purchase the Florham Park franchise. The pair now own eight Amazing Lash Studio locations with four more on the way, and provide financial literacy programs for their employees.

“We really want our team to have a healthy relationship with money,” said Elaina.

They offer financial literacy trainings, host financial planning nights and use worksheets and technology to create budgets, set short term and long term goals and track tips. They open 401k plans and provide education on how to invest into them.

Elaina and Jannet also provide continuing education for their lash technicians, to ensure exceptional service to their customers. The Amazing Lash Studio’s techniques are trademarked and Elaina explained that a healthy application of lashes is important to not violate the integrity of the natural lash.

Amazing Lash Studio offers a variety of lash and brow services including lash extensions, lash lifting, brow shaping and waxing, brow lamination and facial waxing. The services are offered in a private suite for a relaxing spa-like atmosphere.

“What we do for our guests is enhance their natural look by focusing on their facial features and structure while always keeping their lifestyle in mind,” said Jannet. “Our services make them feel young and lively. This is where they gain the confidence to face the world with assurance.”

She said it is also fun to “mix it up” and try different styles to find the perfect one. For example, there are four different types of eyelash extensions.

Elaina and Jannet say that their services help women save time because when their lashes and brows are done, there is no need to apply makeup, deal with runny mascara or use mechanical curlers. “We are all so busy these days, our services allow you to have the time for the things you want to do,” said Jannet.

Prediction About Future Design That Will Surprise You

CWI.DESIGN president and principal designer Rachel Kapner has an uncanny knack for making predictions about the future of design. She even has a crystal ball. “It’s sort of a joke around my office,” she says, “so I did get one for my birthday.” So, when she gazes into it, what does Rachel see about the future of design?

New Designs Will Deserve Fresh Fabrics

This prediction has already come to pass in Rachel’s world, but it’s one you may see more designers embrace. “I don’t like to repeat fabrics,” Rachel explains. “If I use a fabric, I will not use it again, and that is definitely one of my sticking points.”

This impulse has occasionally stymied suppliers. “I’ve had sales reps who’ve come in, who have asked me, ‘Show me the fabric you use every day.’ And I say, ‘There isn’t one.’ And they look at me like I’m crazy.” But to Rachel, it’s smart. “Many of my clients know each other. I want each of their projects to reflect uniqueness, so that you could say: ‘Yes, I can see that Rachel did this—but not necessarily see the exact same thing.”

What unique fabric would Rachel love to use in an upcoming project? Ideally, she’d channel the influence of design icon Mario Buatta, the Prince of Chintz. “Instead of his true floral bouquet chintz: a different, more abstract version of it—but on the same ground cloth,” she explains. “You don’t see a lot of the same ground cloth that you did 30 years ago. People are starting to ask for it, and it’s just not out there.”

While she searches for fabric with his spirit, Rachel will hold tight to her memories of Mario. “I met him about a year or two before he passed away,” Rachel recalls. She’d seen him at talks and books signings, but their most memorable encounter was at a showhouse where Rachel was working. “He was sitting at a table. I went up and just sat and talked to him,” she remembers. “I was so excited that this was my idol, and I was able to meet him.”

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters Can Help Prevent Electrocution

A ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet stops any electrical current “leakage” in its tracks before it has the chance to spark an electrical fire. They should be used in any area where water and electricity may come into contact.

When a GFCI senses current leakage in an electrical circuit, it assumes a ground fault has occurred. It then interrupts power fast enough to help prevent serious injury from electrical shock. Test GFCIs regularly according to the manufacturer’s instructions to make sure they are working properly.

Gardening can be difficult, especially outdoor gardening, because there are so many variables. This includes climate changes, unpredictable weather, and plants getting eaten by wildlife or pests. Indoor gardening allows you to grow veggies year-round in the comfort of your home, with a greater likelihood of success because you control the environment. This is also beneficial for those with little or no outdoor space to incorporate nature into their daily lives. Herbs, leafy plants, and microgreens are the most common edible plants for indoor growing. They generally do well with shallow soil because they’re smaller and don’t need as much space inside. They also don’t need as much sun and are easier to grow if you’re just starting out.

Growing plants indoors is good for your health in other ways too. Plants remove carbon dioxide from the air and generate oxygen, making the air in your home cleaner. Exposure to nature and the accomplishment you feel from successfully starting a garden is also good for your mental health.

Breaks Ground on $225 Million Comprehensive Cancer Center on Livingston Campus

Barnabas Medical Center (CBMC), an RWJBarnabas Health facility, broke ground this week on a five-story, 137,000 square-foot cancer center on its Livingston Campus. The $225-million, freestanding outpatient facility, scheduled for 2025 completion, will serve as the northern hub for the integrated oncology services offered by RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, the state’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.

“The new Cancer Center at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center will be a regional destination for cancer care, building on the medical center’s longstanding legacy of clinical expertise and compassionate, patient-centered diagnosis and treatment,” said Richard L. Davis, the hospital’s President and CEO. “We are celebrating the dawn of a new era in world-class cancer care.”

In alignment with the theme of Reimagining Cancer Care, the new center will feature medical, surgical, and radiation oncology services under one roof—with holistic support services that include a wig and prosthetic studio, teaching kitchen and yoga, reiki, and music therapy. The facility will include private infusion rooms and a calming garden terrace. Other amenities will include short-term and extended-stay treatment spaces where patients can go for treatments that may prevent a visit to the Emergency Department.

“A cancer diagnosis is life-changing, and for many patients and their families, it is the beginning of a long and sometimes daunting journey,” said Michael Scoppetuolo, MD, Medical Director of the Cancer Center at CBMC. “To that end, I am

excited about the research and the top-quality patient care that will take place at this new center. We have an extraordinary medical staff and access to clinical trials and research which sets us apart from other institutions in the state and puts us at the leading edge.”

DEALING WITH OBSTACLES, OBJECTIONS & SETBACKS

There are great benefits from being aware of the opportunities that lie within difficulties. Anytime we push ourselves into new territories or push our limits both physically and mentally, we will encounter obstacles, no’s, setbacks, and barriers. The real intelligence lies in understanding the incoming data by adjusting, learning and sometimes moving on.

Here are a few ways to deal with incoming obstacles effectively:

1. Strong belief system. Do you believe your idea or position has true value? That will go a long way when faced with objections and challenges. I’m approached by companies that want me to place their products and services into national accounts, or inventors that want me to market their inventions or athletes and entertainers that want me to help them breakthrough. If I don’t see a strong value in the offer it becomes very difficult to market. But when the added value is there it gives you the reasons to keep moving forward against the obstacles. Then tenacity and persistence are easier to enforce and have other benefits attached. People see that extra enthusiasm and effort as a positive energy, especially when backed by an attitude that you have faith behind your mission.

2. The counter is where the strategy lives. In martial arts there is a great advantage to not striking first. The greatest fighters can see an attack coming before the movement begins. The ability to step aside or move into the attack allows you to control their energy or use it against them. In business I’ve seen people try to force their ideas or products on to someone first and it can backfire. When people see someone more interested in their own gains than understanding the key needs and goals of the client then more objections surface.

By understanding not just your strengths but really tuning into the other persons goals it allows you to reduce the obstacles moving forward. I welcome the objections or adversity. I sometimes let them pass right by or address them head on. In martial arts there is a saying, “what’s hard dies, what is soft lives.” Stay flexible and learn how to blend with your opponent. When change comes your way keep an open mind and look for ways to take advantage of the situation by not being so rigid in your approach. When we get set in our ways that is what seems to get “in the way” of new opportunities.

3. Constant preparation and action builds confidence and clarity. Massive action combined with deep research on your strategy has a powerful effect. When you study your targets, goals or anything tied into your objectives it gives you a calming feeling and internal confidence that helps you stand strong against any incoming obstacles. The next time you take on a challenge that might seem overwhelming try to seek out people who have the experience to be a mentor. Then read everything you can about the situation. We have at our fingertips a world of resources on the internet from audio, video and reading materials. But just as powerful as the research and preparation can be, nothing takes the place of learning from our actions. The work will teach you how to do it. I can’t say it any simpler. My focus over the years with each project has been this… to learn from my actions and act from my learning. One without the other suffers, but together provide a powerful strategy to deal with any of those incoming obstacles.
