Millburn Teens Create Board Game
R
iya Tyagi, grade 10, and Tanish, grade 11, of Millburn, have created a board game for people ages five and above, called “Who Wants to Be a Billionaire,” which will soon be available on Amazon for purchase. They first launched it on Kickstarter and raised more than expected, which will help fund production of the game. To play the game, you start out as a Silicon Valley startup founder racing to reach a unicorn status of a $1 billion valuation. You begin hiring your Scrum Team and strategically acquiring technologies. With resources in place, you build products and drive user growth. Tanish says, “Words cannot describe how it feels to have taken this game from a drawing on paper to a fully manufactured game. Summit Teen Wins Scholastic Arts Awards
R
obert Welton, a junior at Summit High School, recently won three 2022 Scholastic Arts Awards for animations he created that are available for viewing on his YouTube channel, titled “Robert Welton’s World of Animation.” The channel, which he created during the pandemic, includes stop motion, cut out, puppetry, experimental, traditional, and mechanical animations, as well as claymation and live (combination of animation and live action). He has over 1 million views. Robert says, “I feel very proud and accomplished after winning the Scholastic awards, since it gives me some recognition for my creative work as a bronze and silver medalist.” He also says, “I use my animations, and also my graphic design work, to express my creative ideas and give my unique perspective. ”His mother Cynthia says, “Robert is the most creative person I have experienced in my life, who just happens to also be my son.”
Florham Park Memorial First Aid Squad, Inc., Holds Easter Fundraiser

hanks to the Florham Park Memorial First Aid Squad, Inc., families in Florham Park, Madison, East Hanover, Chatham, Whippany and Cedar Knolls who signed up for the “Egg My Yard” fundraiser will be waking up to find their yards filled with candy-filled eggs on April 9, 15 or 16! The fundraiser will directly benefit the Squad. Participants signed up for packages of 30, 50, 70 or 100 eggs and had the opportunity to add on a letter from the Easter Bunny and/or a Golden Egg with a prize. If it rains, the alternative will be to have a basket of eggs arrive on the doorstep from the Easter Bunny. “I am very excited for this event as Easter is my favorite holidays, says Jessica Marie Bartelloni, chairperson of fundraising. “It will be very successful. In just one week, 30 families signed up and we raised over $3000.”
Chatham Family Plans Renegade Ride to Help Fund Cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy
B
illy Lester, of Chatham, and his family have founded a non-profit called Rare Disease Renegades, and are planning an event, the Renegade Ride, on June 11th. Rare Disease Renegades helps scientists get the funding they need to accelerate research, and cures for rare diseases, like Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), a disease afflicting Billy’s son, Caffrey, 11. Billy explains, “DMD renders muscles unable to recover from activity, so the body can’t rebuild them and by the age of 10-12, boys lose ambulation and by their mid-20s, lose lung and cardiac function leading to premature death.” Billy says there is cause for optimism, “Progress is being made, but as with other rare diseases, we have to do everything possible.” That’s why he’s planning the event. “We are very excited to involve the community in the Renegade Ride. The ride goes through Morris County, people can participate multiple ways: riding, attending the party, or donating,” says Billy. Visit rarediseaserenegades.org to sign up and to donate. Chatham Teens Run Women in Stem Poster Contest
R
ecently, Chatham High School students Katherine Xikes, senior, Amudha Krishnan, senior, Charlotte Siow, senior, and Natalie Yen, sophomore, ran a Women in STEM poster contest for students in Kindergarten to Middle School. Contestants had to create posters with a picture of a woman in STEM they admired with some biographical information. The goal was to “show the impact that women have had in science and to inspire young girls to pursue similar fields.” The winning posters will hang at local shops, and will be available on the website, along with the honorable mentions. Winners will receive $25 gift cards too. The winners were: Arya Wang, Kindergarten (Rosalind Franklin); Victoria Dunn, grade 1 (Sylvia Earle); Elle Norcia, grade 2 (Mae Jemison); Alice Wang, grade 2 (Jane Goodall); and Julietta Dunn, grade 3 (Joan Beachamp Procter). Be the Change NJ Supply Drive for the Ukranians in Poland Includes Handwritten Cards
A
s part of the Be the Change NJ ongoing drive to send supplies to nurses in a convent in Poland, led by Sue Seto and Toni Banaki, the children at Han Academy in Berkeley Heights worked hard to make beautiful uplifting cards to be delivered to children with the supplies. Handwritten messages on the cards speak of being brave, love, peace, and hope. “The effect and impact from the invasion of Ukrainian is very disheartening,” said Sue. “I don’t have family there, but I feel the sadness and terror. Like many, I wish I can do more. We are hoping that the collections will be helpful to those who need the supplies. Hopefully this will end soon, and the people will be in peace.”

Mom is Advocate for People with Autism

C
indy Gelormini of New Providence took the sadness of losing her autistic son, Robbie, 27, and poured it into projects like writing books, hosting a podcast and YouTube Channel, and running a women’s retreat.
She wrote three rhyming chapter books called, “Robbie’s World: and His SPECTRUM of Adventures!” where she did 340 illustrations. The books, which are for children ages 4 and up, can be used as teaching tools by parents, caregivers, and teachers to explain how to understand people with Autism. The books share her son Robbie’s actual escapades, of running away, pulling a fire alarm, being afraid of Santa Claus, not being able to sit still and more, which are relatable to all children, through a cute penguin protagonist. At the end of each chapter, Cindy shares actual photos of Robbie, which help to put the escapades into perspective for older readers. Cindy Gelormini
Cindy says, “The books were part of my healing process. My hope is that they can entertain children and provide parents and teachers with a fun way of explaining Autism to children. I hope people fall in love with Robbie the penguin, while experiencing empathy.” The books have a universal message of acceptance and inclusion, with each chapter ending with “I love you just the way you are.” After the books came out, Cindy started a podcast, called Spectrum Perspectives, where she interviews parents of autistic children and advocates for services for autistic people over the age of 21, which is where she says the services drop off. Episodes can be seen on her YouTube Channel, “Robbie and Me: Autism Reality.” In addition, Cindy has started retreats for moms of children with special needs. The first one was held in New Providence in October. Guests enjoyed a catered lunch and dinner, massages and spa treatments, a painting party, crafting, a comedian, getting to meet other moms and making new friends. Four moms were surprised with makeovers at a salon and received professional haircuts and color, make up, clothes by a stylist, and professional headshots. They returned for a fashion show style reveal that was the hit of the night. Cindy is planning more events in New Jersey including one in Tom’s River, which not only has the highest percentage of people with Autism in NJ, but the highest percentage of people with Autism in the nation—since NJ has the highest percentage overall. “Moms of kids with special needs need a break once in a while,” says Cindy. “They are stressed, tired, depressed, and often find it hard to make friends and/or maintain friendships. These retreats let them spend time with other moms facing similar issues, where they can share relatable stories, relax and laugh with new friends.” The event was free for guests, with monies raised through donations to Robbie’s World Foundation. Millburn High School Class Raises Money for Tornado Victims By Jackie Schatell
M
illburn High School teacher Steve Breslow’s Math Analysis classes, which teach financial literacy and other math skills to HS seniors, recently raised $3,076 for the Mayfield Kentucky Tornado Relief Fund. Mayfield was virtually destroyed by a tornado on December 10, 2021. The campaign was called “Millburn4Mayfield.” “Each year, the students take time to investigate non-profits, look at their financials and determine which ones to fundraise for,” said Steve. “While we were performing our analysis, a tornado hit Kentucky and the class decided overwhelmingly to support Mayfield.” “This past September, Millburn faced a bad flood, so when we heard about the tornado in Mayfield, it really hit home,” said Millburn student Kelly Fitzsimmons. The class brainstormed how to raise money for the Mayfield school district and decided to design a t-shirt and sell it in an online store. The short-sleeved version sold for $13 and the long-sleeved version sold for $18. Shirts were bought by parents, students, and faculty, and they raised $503. “Once the class realized how much we made per shirt versus how much the shirt vendor kept, the students decided to start an additional donation account, which raised $2433,” said Steve. “The
class realized that every little bit helps, so we tried to raise as much as we could to send to Mayfield.” Student Andrew Capasso said, “We found out it takes money to raise money.” To promote the drive, the class used social media. Student James Staeger added, “We sent out the drive information to the Millburn community on Facebook and made flyers with QR codes. We did a lot to make it easily accessible.” The students held a Zoom call with a group of Mayfield students and their teacher, on February 16, and designated February 17 as “Millburn4Mayfield” Day at MHS. All those purchasing shirts were encouraged to wear the shirts to school and around town to entice additional students, teachers, and administrators,
as well as local businesses to get involved. “We worked really hard on this endeavor and wanted to show off our efforts at school and in town,” said Millburn student Daisy Brody. The students were very proud of their efforts. “I was definitely happy with what we did,” said student Olivia Claude. “We wanted to show people out of state that we were here to help them.” Student Leila Cabbani said, “We learned that if we put our minds to something, we really could make a difference.” “In the end,” Steve said, “our students realized that their peers in another state are more alike than different, and that it’s always right to help those in need.”

I
n nice weather, what is more fun than driving around with the top down and feeling the sun on your face and the wind in your hair? This is why many people love Jeep Wranglers. The second, “Plan,” identifies specific steps toward achieving those goals. “Implement” means taking those steps. “Monitor,” the fourth section, continues throughout the client’s relationship with the firm.
During the pandemic, many have worried about their financial holdings. Egan believes it was reassuring that Egan Wealth Advisors “stayed with the ship,” keeping their Madison office, where they have been for 30 years, open. “We monitor portfolios every day. Our experience counts,” he said. One pandemic plus—people staying at home more made it easier to schedule conferences, “even if everyone was in sweatpants,” he chuckled.

Light Filled Transitional Kitchen Renovation

hile life is beginning to feel more normal after struggling through the pandemic, one thing these past few years has taught us is the need to be comfortable in our own homes. Home renovations have taken priority over those (often cancelled) vacations and trips, allowing homeowners to reimagine how they want their homes to look, feel, and function. s the owner of the popular South Orange boutique Sadie’s, Catherine Fisher was an experienced merchant when she bought Kitchen a la Mode, in 2018. During that time, she brought her focus on ethically produced goods with her. She wasn’t well-versed in cookware, but quickly got up to speed, and added many American-made products, along with items such as eco-friendly zip-lock bags, and beeswax food wrap. Owning her own businesses, she states, has freed her from situations in which women are still being passed over for promotions by less-qualified men. She receives networking support from other local women-owned businesses. Fisher also has been able to provide internships for students from nearby Seton Hall who “have gone to big, bright careers,” Fisher said. Her advice to budding women entrepreneurs: “Don’t be afraid to try. Failure only matters if you don’t try again.”

Nancy Ori Finds Woodland Beauty Story and Artist Portrait by Dan Epstein
B
erkeley Heights based photographer Nancy Ori is well-known for the workshops and private mentoring she’s offered to photographic artists for decades, but it’s her own work that most folks should become acquainted with. A graduate of Elmira College with an MS from Pratt in Communication Design, she spent the first 25 years of her working life creating corporate communications for Ciba-Geigy/Novartis. During that time she tirelessly conducted workshops in the evenings for peer professionals. It was in 2000 that she left and started her own business, The New Jersey Media Center, which combined pursuing her craft herself while also including her love of teaching both in her own studio and in New Jersey venues including the Peters Valley School of Craft, the Hunterdon Museum, and the Grounds For Sculpture. Currently, during the pandemic these have been on hiatus, but she hopes to jump start them again when possible. In the meantime she leads collegial meetings for photo artists on Zoom via the New Jersey Photography Forum. Ever the explorer, Ori has been photographing trees each morning during the pandemic with the camera in her phone and manipulating them with various digital photography applications to achieve a painterly look. Perhaps inspired by her experience as an assistant to Ansel Adams, these images made in a local park take on a similarly grand appearance. In Before Sunrise the pre-dawn light creates a silhouette wherein winter-bare tree branches become lace. Morning Meadow gives us glimpse past some trees into an open meadow splashed with morning light celebrating the contrast of light and shadow. We see in Morning Walk, a sea of lush greens and the texture of the canvas this image is printed on remind of the best of the Hudson Valley School paintings and make us almost ache for the solitude of a pastoral setting. Winter Warmth gives a glimpse past a stand of brush into, what, a pond, a field, definitely a different place if we step through the brush into the warm morning light. A self-proclaimed tree-hugger, her love of the woods and the ability to capture it’s beauty is Ori’s gift. Reduce, reuse, and recycle. This is a great opportunity to spring clean. Instead of throwing things into landfills, repurpose them by donating to Facebook groups like the Buy Nothing Project, and Free Stuff marketplace groups, or to the needy. Volunteer. There are hundreds of ways to volunteer that can be found online like participating in small, masked group cleanups. Educate. Educate yourself and others on ways to heal the earth by reading, watching videos and talks. Conserve water. Earth day is the perfect time to intentionally start conserving water while brushing teeth, showering, and watering the lawn. Choose sustainable. If you aren’t already doing so, start using recyclable bags for food shopping and reusing plastic water bottles. Use energy efficient bulbs. By using energy efficient bulbs and turning the lights off when you leave a room, you are helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

"Allergic rhinitis, commonly called hay fever, has been around for hundreds of years, causing symptoms like sneezing, itchy eyes, mouth or skin, runny nose, and congestion," said Dr. Mark Corbett, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. "Your symptoms often depend on which pollens you're allergic to." Allergists can help identify precisely what is causing you problems so you can take appropriate action based on your individual needs. Along with taking your history and conducting an exam, allergists conduct tests to identify your specific allergens and treat your symptoms to help you take control. Testing for hay fever
Allergy symptoms can begin much earlier than the official start of spring. To lessen the impact, start taking your allergy medications two to three weeks before your symptoms usually begin. Close your car and home windows during the spring allergy season as breezes carry microscopic pollen particles. Take off shoes when you enter your home and consider immediately putting clothes in the wash to get rid of pollen. Shower and shampoo at night before bed so pollen is not being transferred from your hair to your bedding. Keep an eye on the predicted pollen counts for your region, particularly if you plan to be outdoors for long stretches.
There are many types of pollen and an overall high pollen count doesn't always indicate a strong concentration of the pollens that cause your symptoms. April is National Donate Life Month!

pring is the season of renewal and, fittingly, April is National Donate Life Month, which helps raise awareness about donation, encourage Americans to register as organ, eye and tissue donors and to honor those that have saved lives through the gift of donation.
Statistics say a lot… According to Donate Life America, in 2021, more than 41,000 transplants from 20,300 donors brought renewed life to patients and their families and communities. More than 100,000 people are waiting for lifesaving organ transplants. Another person is added to the nation’s organ transplant waiting list every nine minutes. Seventeen people die each day while waiting for a transplant. Eighty-five percent of patients on the waiting list are waiting for a kidney.

NJ Sharing Network in New Providence is a non-profit organization responsible for the recovery and placement of donated organs and tissue for the nearly 4,000 New Jersey residents currently awaiting transplantation. The Foundation is committed to increasing the number of lives saved through innovative transplant research, family support, public awareness and education about the life-saving benefits of organ and tissue donation and transplantation.
Statistics don’t say it all. Why do people become living donors? 46-year-old Brian Glennon, a Caldwell resident and married father of four, achieved his long-thought-out desire to “give back” by donating a kidney. Two years prior he had embarked on a life

reevaluation journey and volunteered at various charitable organizations, including the NJ Sharing Network, where his wife Elisse worked at the time and is now Executive Director of the Foundation. Glennon discussed his intention with the Living Donation Institute of Saint Barnabas Medical Center (recently renamed Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center.) The center is designed to promote living donation as the best transplant option for patients with chronic kidney disease who are either on or approaching dialysis. Because Glennon was in good health and his o+ blood type was compatible with other positive blood types, he was deemed an excellent donor. But Glennon was not donating to a loved one or an acquaintance. Instead, he was considered an ‘altruistic donor’—a kidney donor who wishes to donate to a person who they do not know. On October 3, 2017 his kidney was transplanted into a woman in her 60s whose kidneys had been compromised by lupus. Her daughter was unable to donate to her because of incompatibility, but as a result of Glennon’s donation, she was motivated to altruistically donate her kidney. According to Alyssa D’Addio, Director of Hospital and Community Services of the NJ Sharing Network, “just one organ and tissue donor can save eight lives and enhance the lives of 75 others.” In June 2018 he met his recipient on live tv on the Today Show. Both he and the recipient continue to thrive. As a result of her new kidney, the recipient was able to travel to Taiwan to see her father for the first time in many years and welcome her first grandchild. Glennon quickly returned to his favorite activities of mountain biking, road biking and running. Glennon states that his kidney donation left him “humbled, fortunate, and grateful that life has never been better.”

Remind Me Again How Lucky We Are… By Barry Farber

hey call it “Doom Scrolling” these days. We can see the news from around the world in seconds, flipping through headlines with our thumbs. We see more death and destruction in one news segment today than most people saw in a lifetime 100 years ago. Want to get rid of negative thoughts? Anxiety? Doubt? Fear?Infuse more happiness and a feeling of calm in your life?Here’s one big secret I’ve mentioned many times before, but needs repeating. It will change the way you see the world and give you the opportunity to maintain more control in life and the goals you’re looking to achieve. It’s said many times throughout history in many different ways. It goes like this:
“We become what we think about.” Six simple words that will change the way you think, believe and act.
“You have power over your mind— not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.” —Marcus Aurelius
So why do we need reminding about this? Reminding about what we should be thinking? I think it’s because we take it for granted having been given this beautiful mind free and clear. To put this concept to work requires doing the work. Putting in the effort to selectively choose what we think about. Selectively choosing our environment.
I recently recorded three interviews for a new podcast coming out called, In Search Of The Magic Tree. It included a world-renowned brain surgeon, a 4 time Olympian and “Mr. Wonderful” himself. Here’s the interesting part of this selfless promotion. Each one of them talked about the power of discipline at an early age and creating your own environment to enhance the content of what you’re absorbing. Barry Farber How we think and what we surround ourselves with. The idea of how you spend your time. Making sure you get the most out of every second and squeeze the best out of this life. We all see what is happening around us and in this world today. Why does it take a catastrophe to bring us together and see what clearly matters. How do we leave this place better than we found it? How do we help others along the way? To change what we think about requires making changes in our lives. What we read… who we see… what we listen to. There’s a saying:
“If you want to make changes in your life, you have to make changes in your life.” Simply said, but effort to get it done. It’s not going to be easy making changes but great opportunity lies within difficulty. Maybe because we have our minds for free we take them for granted. How lucky we are to have these minds free and clear. You do become what you think about. What are you thinking?
