Pandemic Food Drive Surpasses
75,000
SANDWICHES in 65 Weeks By Jackie Schatell
M
ike Savage of New Providence has always been charitable. In fact, he his wife Paula, and their three children, have been volunteering at St. Johns Soup Kitchen for over 15 years. However, when the pandemic hit and Mike was asked to manage a sandwich-making program for the homeless, he not only jumped in headfirst and garnered 30 volunteers, he also received 600 sandwiches with his first appeal. In mid-June, 65 weeks later, Mike says over 75,000 sandwiches have been donated. On Mondays, he and 8-10 volunteers meet at the Our Lady of Peace Parish Hall Kitchen from 1-2 pm to make and collect sandwiches from local families. Later, the sandwiches are driven to five charities. The group also collects fruit, snack bars and other essentials, and Mike says they act like a “clearing house,” sending items collected to other pantries when they are needed. While Mike does not like asking anyone including businesses for donations because he knows “everyone is hurting these days,” a few businesses have come forward to donate like Bagel Café, which has been donating 40 lbs. of cheese a week for a year.
The Savage family, front row, from left: Jennifer, Mike and Paula; back row, James, and their pets, Liam and Ollie. Mike started this endeavor during the Pandemic, and he says he plans to continue with it as we enter the “new normal.” “The work is transformative,” says Mike. I love knowing we are here to do good, and seeing it happen.” To make a monetary donation, contact Our Lady of Peace Parish Hall Kitchen, and earmark it for “Father Bill’s Sandwich Drive.” To donate sandwiches, food or essentials, call/text: 908-400-6885.

Millington Resident’s Efforts During Pandemic Were Heroic By Jackie Schatell
K
risten Oleske of Millington has a soft place in her heart for seniors. When the pandemic hit, they were the first people she thought about.
Kristen put up flyers throughout Long Hill Township and contacted the Senior Center and local officials. She says the response was immediate.
“I realized early on during the pandemic that the seniors in our community were vulnerable,” she says.
“So many beautiful connections were formed,” says Kristen. “The volunteer responses from residents, many I had never met, brought tears to my eyes.”
According to Kristen, “the pandemic stopped the operation of the local senior bus and many seniors had no means of grocery shopping, getting prescriptions and attending necessary doctor appointments.” To combat these problems, Kristen started a mission she called, “Operation You Are Not Alone,” where she created over 130 one-to-one connections with senior buddy volunteers assigned to seniors in need. The goal was twofold: to make sure seniors had someone to help them through the pandemic and for the pair to form a bond that would “last well beyond it.”
And Kristen did not stop there. When the vaccine rolled out, she reached out for volunteers to schedule appointments and provide transportation for seniors and the disabled. She also asked for food and essentials that she donated to local food banks and churches and got a group together to go caroling for seniors around the holidays. “I wanted the vulnerable in our community to know we were all in this together and they were not alone,” says Kristen. “So many selfless volunteers were eager to join the mission. All I had to do was ask. It is amazing what we can grow with a seed of kindness.”
Kristen Oleske of Millington, pulled out all the stops to help as many people as possible throughout the pandemic.

Fine Dining On A Roll

magine a breakfast and lunch place where almost everything is made on-premises from scratch. And if they can’t make it in-house, it’s locally sourced. Chef Sam Freund whose resume includes such renown names as 11 Madison Park, and One If By Land, six years ago opened the most unpretentious little place we’ve ever seen. He said, he wanted to offer “Fine dining on a roll”. He has, and it’s nothing short of amazing. At breakfast time consider Mizz Piggy, a sandwich with crispy pork belly, double egg, pepperjack cheese and Fresno Chili Sauce, or Morning Pop, featuring house-cured pastrami, double egg, swiss cheese and NYSO sauce in addition to stalwart traditional Bacon Egg & Cheese or Taylor Ham & Cheese. At lunch, a variety of creative toppings for your burger, but to us, it’s what he’s named the Slamwiches that truly shine. His BLT starts with house made pork belly, arugula, tomato jam and arugula pesto served on a bun he baked that morning. Pastrami lovers will fall in love all over again with Pop That Pastrami, large chunks of on premises house brined and applewood smoked pastrami, swiss cheese and his NYSO (‘Nock Your Socks Off) house sauce served on a bialy roll, also baked that morning. We were delighted with the Duck Confit sandwich, pictured here, featuring a generous portion of duck, slaw, red onion jam, NYSO sauce and served with a house-made pickle, house-made chips, again on a bun baked moments ago. If you can get there and back in the same day… it’s worth the trip.

n honor of her upcoming bat mitzvah celebration, Lily Schonbraun, a 12-year-old from Short Hills, organized and ran a fundraiser on May 15, 2021, to benefit the Greater Newark Tennis & Education program (GNTE) at Orange Lawn Tennis Club. The mitzvah project, which raised in excess of $32,500 for GNTE, featured a warm-up clinic run by Orange Lawn’s High Performance Coaches Michael Thompson, Asim Sengun and Yhonny Murray in which 60 children participated, followed by a tiered “U.S. Open and French Open” tennis tournament for 32 parent/child doubles teams who competed on the club’s clay courts.

A sixth grader at Newark Academy, Lily knew she wanted to combine her love of tennis with her desire to give back to the community for her mitzvah project. “Ever since I was little, tennis has been such an important part of my life and something that I have always been so passionate about. I have learned so much about the game, and more importantly, the life lessons that have come out of the game. Andy Foster Photo
Lily with father David Schonbraun
“The Greater Newark Tennis & Education program is an amazing organization that provides kids in the Newark area with a place to learn and play tennis, broaden and enhance their education, and learn valuable life skills,” she explained. “I realize how fortunate I have been to enjoy tennis lessons and the opportunity to play every day, so I was really excited to be able to help other kids share that experience, which will hopefully guide them well through life.”

Family Law Attorney Helps Clients Divorce Without Court The Art of Mediation and Arbitration By Cynthia Burns
T
anya Freeman, an attorney and Chair of the Family Law Department at Weiner Law Group LLP, believes in the benefits of keeping divorcing couples out of court. She is a proponent of mediation or arbitration to reach a settlement in many cases, either before or after the complaint for divorce is filed. What Freeman seeks Tanya Freeman is to handle the entire proceedings through mediation or arbitration. A primer: with mediation the parties work with a qualified mediator who facilitates reaching a settlement. The results are non-binding. With arbitration, the parties may decide to allow the arbitrator to serve as the decision maker and the proceedings unfold much like a trial. The arbitrator makes a decision that the parties can accept or reject. Freeman explains another benefit of arbitration is the ability to select dates in closer succession than if you were in Court. Freeman explains, “it is emotionally charged, but you’re in control of the calendar.” “There are many benefits to mediation,” says Freeman, who is also a mediator. “You determine your destination. It is a way to test the flexibility of a settlement proposal. It’s cost efficient and provides more time to discuss financial and custody issues.” She describes mediation as shuttle diplomacy. “You can caucus, meaning go back and forth between the parties and their attorneys with suggestions and counteroffers.”

When mediation or arbitration are successful, the settlement agreement is fully executed and the parties can proceed with an uncontested divorce. During COVID-19 the court system adopted divorce by affidavit. Questions a judge would ask at the final hearing for divorce may now be provided by way of an Affidavit. According to Freeman, this process allows couples to finalize their divorce without taking additional time to appear in court.

Hear Your Best…To Be Your Best By Cynthia Burns, photo by Dan Epstein
F
ostering a culture of listening and understanding to serve and improve the lives of each patient is the guiding principle of Christian Kubick, owner of Kubick and Kubick Hearing Aid Center. Christian was drawn to the profession after observing his own mother’s experience with hearing loss in her early 30s. Because of that experience, he understands the everyday struggles of those living with hearing loss. Christian, a NJ Licensed Hearing Aid Dispenser, prides himself on running a patient-focused practice, where each patient is treated like part of the family. This commitment sets Kubick and Kubick apart from any other. Kubick and Kubick has a team that shares this vision for exemplary patient care. Jill Venturella, the Patient Care Coordinator, has been with Kubick and Kubick since 2017. She is eager to get to know each patient and their story from their very first phone call. Her passion and dedication to give each patient a positive experience is unmatched. Kaitlin Shaw, a NJ Licensed Hearing Aid Dispenser, joined the Kubick and Kubick family in 2020. Kaitlin treats each patient with compassion and truly listens to their needs to find their best hearing solution. The center provides a full range of services including administering hearing
tests; dispensing, adjusting and repairing hearing aids; speech-in-noise testing; treating tinnitus or a “ringing in the ears”; and providing custom-made hearing protection. Most people visit their family physician or eye doctor once a year for regular checkups, and it’s no different for your hearing. Christian recommends getting an annual hearing test as well. “More young people are noticing increased difficulty hearing at an earlier age,” notes Christian. “Common signs of hearing loss to look for are loved ones missing words or asking people to repeat themselves, not being able to hear the television and in some cases, people start to socially withdraw.” Choosing a hearing aid is a very personalized experience at Kubick and Kubick. The hearing care providers look at each patient’s individual needs, concerns, audiological findings, and their lifestyle to determine the best fit. There have been many groundbreaking advancements in technology. The new technology takes complex situations and provides the patient with the clarity they need to thrive. In addition to the increased quality in sound, the latest devices offer a wide range of connectivity that makes them compatible with iPhone and Android mobile devices. This connectivity enables the patient to have binaural hands-free Summer 2021
calling and audio streaming. They also include an app where the user can finetune hearing aid volume and hearing programs, and even a button to find your hearing aids in the event that they are lost. Even better, hearing aids are now available with rechargeable batteries, which is beneficial to many patients who suffer from dexterity issues. To prevent hearing loss, Christian recommends utilizing hearing protection. Exposure to loud music, live or through headphones, can be dangerous. Kubick & Kubick offers many different styles of hearing protection ear plugs for motorcyclists, musicians, hunters and shooters, concert and sporting event enthusiasts, and those who listen to music through a personal player. Whether you’re looking to protect your hearing or treat your hearing loss with devices, the team at Kubick and Kubick welcomes new patients in for a regular check-up in their comfortable Millburn location.

f you haven’t guessed, July is National Ice Cream Month. It’s a perfect time to cool off with a scoop of your favorite flavor. Like with other foods, the exact origin of ice cream is unknown. What we do know, however, is the origin of ice cream likely dates back to A.D. 54 to 68 during the time when Nero was Emperor of Rome. Evidence shows harvesting ice or snow, then flavoring it with honey or other flavorings to make ice cream. Alexander the Great supposedly enjoyed icy drinks that had flavorings such as honey or nectar, too! The first appearance of ice cream in the U.S. is found in a letter by Maryland Governor William Bladen in 1744. Early presidents also had a liking towards ice cream. In fact, in the summer of 1790, George Washington spent approximately $200 for ice cream. For a while, ice cream was only an occasional special treat, mainly for the rich.
So, if you need representation in any family law situation, consider what's at stake—then consider Tanya L. Freeman. It’s your move. a member of
In 1843, Nancy Johnson patented the hand crank ice cream maker. Eight years later, in 1851, Jacob Fussell built the first ice cream factory. The invention of mechanical refrigeration helped keep large amounts of ice cream cool. Further improvements and new inventions in technology made ice cream more available to the general public.
ICE CREAM FUN FACTS • Vanilla is the most popular flavor of ice cream. • It takes roughly 50 licks to finish an ice cream cone. • The ice cream soda was invented in 1874. • California produces the most ice cream in the United States.

Paddlesports
Great for Fitness, Socializing and Communing with Nature By Jackie Schatell

ayaking and other types of paddlesports are on an uptick this year. In fact, paddlesports are now considered to be one of the fastestgrowing sports in the country. If you are looking for new ways to get fit, are seeking ways to commune with nature, or spend time with family and friends, then paddlesports might be for you. These types of activities are gaining in popularity for many reasons including accessibility, affordability, and approachability. Most people live within 15 miles of a body of water, making it an accessible hobby. “Wonderful opportunities exist to immerse yourself in nature just minutes from home,” says Senior Naturalist, Essex County Environmental Center, County of Essex, Department of Parks, David Alexander. There are several locations allowing paddlers to put their kayak, canoe and stand-up paddleboat in the water or to rent them. And for those just looking to get a feel for being on the water, paddleboats can be rented at Sunrise Lake Beach Club in Madison, Essex County Parks Boat Pavilion in West Orange and at Verona Park in Verona.
Executive Director, Reeves-Reed Arboretum in Summit, Jackie Kondel, says. “Our trips with Kayak East enable us to explore natural areas beyond ReevesReed Arboretum in an exciting new way.” Kayaks and boards are more affordable these days because today’s technology creates high-end products at good pricing, providing a low cost to entry to the sport. Paddlers can even purchase blow-up versions. Kayaks and canoes can also be rented by the hour for less than $20 at some places. In addition, paddlesports let you get on the water without having to buy or rent a boat, which is considerably more costly.
for recreational and social fun, and for those wishing to increase intensity, start a competition or pick harder courses to paddle. Getting started is easy. You do not have to go out and buy expensive gear, need a license or register your own kayak or canoe. You can find a place nearby offering lessons with certified instructors to teach you how to do it correctly. A great option is to also sign up for a guided tour. If you decide to try it on your own, research the depth of the water, the winds, tides, and what is below. You should also tell someone where you are going and when you will be back.
Paddling techniques are easy to learn, especially for people who are already athletic, and even for people as young as 6. However, anyone can pick up a paddlesport regardless of fitness ability following a lesson or more. During the past year, where spending time outdoors became the new normal, more people have begun enjoying paddlesports such as: rowing, kayaking, and standup paddleboarding to keep busy and to become fit, providing good low- middleand high-intensity impact cardiovascular benefits. Let Barth’s Put the B in Your BBQ continued from previous page
Barth’s natural casing and skinless frankfurters are a staple for any bbq. They come in pork or all-beef varieties. Barth’s pork sausages come in traditional links (hot or sweet), as a cheese and parsley wheel, as chorizo, and Andouille. In addition, Barth’s sells lamb merguez sausage and several varieties of chicken sausage. Top grilled sausage with sautéed onions and peppers and serve on an Italian hoagie bun. Customers rave about Barth’s burgers for good reason. You can choose between 4-ounce or 7-ounce ground sirloin patties or 4-ounce and 8-ounce short rib brisket burgers. In summer months, Barth’s also offers 3-ounce sliders. A Barth’s burger makes the most delicious base for your favorite topping from tomato, to avocado, to fried egg, to fried onions and more!

What’s better than a steak and baked potato? Porterhouse, strip, and ribeye steaks are customer favorites. For a more cost conscious barbecue, try the sirloin steak, which serves 4-6. Or, if you are seeking the “Wow” factor, choose Barth’s Tomahawk steak, which is a dramatic ribeye otherwise known as a “Cowboy Steak.” Top your steak with a dollop of truffle butter for a sophisticated flavor. Barth’s Market makes nine varieties of bratwurst: Smoked Brats, Beer Brats, Cheddar Brats, Cheddar Jalapeno Brats, Bauernwurst, Weisswurst, Bavarian Brats, and Thuringer Sausage. Serve with Barth’s homemade sauerkraut and German potato salad. And for a ready-to-go barbecue, try the grilled bratwurst sampler from Barth’s catering menu; it comes complete with three varieties of mustard.
Summer 2021
Barth’s makes six varieties of kebabs and satays. Traditional chicken and steak kebabs are marinated in burgundy peppercorn sauce. Shrimp kebabs and lamb kebabs are marinated in garlic & wine mixture. In addition, Barth’s now offers teriyaki chicken satays and Yakiniku beef satays. These kebabs are available ready-to-grill. Pair kebabs and satays with Barth’s grilled vegetables and some dinner rolls for a healthy, summer meal. Whether you cook a pork shoulder low and slow in your smoker or you order a half tray from Barth’s, pulled pork is always a crowd pleaser. Serve the pork on slider buns and top with Barth’s coleslaw.

DEMYSTIFYING FAMILY LAW with Attorney Sandra Fava By Melissa Sorge
S
andra Fava is a partner at Fox Rothschild firm in their family law department. Under Fava’s counsel, family law matters do not have to be as complicated and stressful as they may seem. We were fortunate enough to gain insight from Fava about some of the most challenging legal issues families encounter and how she guides clients through these situations with confidence and compassion.
What is the first question you might ask someone seeking advice on a potential divorce? One of the first questions I would ask a potential divorce client is what their biggest concern or worry is about the concept of divorce so that I could immediately address that to make them feel more comfortable.
How can your firm help make a potential divorce proceeding less overwhelming for your client? Working with me and Fox Rothschild provides clients the resources to have all their legal needs met in one place. It is not uncommon for a divorce client to have issues related to a corporate structure, an estate plan, planning for a special needs child, tax issues, etc. As we are a full-service, national law firm, I have the resources at my fingertips to get the client the right answers quickly, rather than having to find different outside counsel to assist.
How can your firm help clients with the financial aspects of divorce such as alimony, child support, and the division of property and assets? I have the depth and breadth of legal experience, specializing in family law my entire career, to guide clients through the current and developing laws surrounding alimony, child support, and the division of property, assets, and debt.
What sets your services apart from other attorneys in your field? Working with me, clients receive personalized attention with the resources of a large multi-practice law firm to support me. I provide clients with effective strategies, innovative solutions, and compassionate counsel.

Where Old is New Aggain By Cynthia Burns
A
discerning eye, attention to detail and more than 25 years in business makes ANS Antiques unique. Owner Sam Guidan ensures that buyers receive accurate information about each item and sellers an honest appraisal of their valuables. Antique is defined as anything more than 100 years old. Guidan buys furniture; jewelry; silver; watches and clocks; coins and medals, and antique and modern art.
“The price I offer to sellers is usually higher than other dealers.” – Sam Guidan, owner, ANS Antiques The key to ANS’ success is the meticulous research Guidan conducts to evaluate each item. Auction records, magazine articles and talking to other dealers adds to Guidan’s knowledge of the antique market.
Guidan says, “Mid-century furniture is in vogue; however, 19th century furniture is not.” He is happy to introduce watch collectors to timepieces manufactured by smaller companies that are valuable, but not as known. Coins continue to be popular and their worth is based on their condition.
ANS ANTIQUES
“The price I offer to sellers is usually higher than other dealers,” says Guidan. He notes that the antique market is a cyclical one. “Eventually everything changes.”

Yacht rock refers to the highly polished brand of soft rock that emanated from Southern California between 1976 and 1984. The term is meant to suggest the kind of smooth, mellow music that early yuppies likely enjoyed while sipping champagne on their yachts.

Sandwiches Galore
W
e have a friend whose son, when coming home to visit, insists his first stop after the airport is the Millburn Deli. It’s not surprising: they are all about sandwiches. First you need to decide whether you’re in the mood for Chicken Cutlets, Grilled Chicken,Beef, Ham, Turkey, a Sloppy Joe, or something Vegetarian. In each category, there are a host of different combinations, on a variety of different breads such as Rosemary Focaccia, Ciabatta, French Bread, a sub, a wrap, a Kaiser Roll, and of course, white and rye. Should you be off bread, salad choices abound. The menu is truly vast, and if you’re like us, you’ll struggle to narrow down your choice because so many of their creative ingredient fusions will tempt you. Note that it may be really crowded inside when you get there. Don’t panic, the team works like a well-oiled machine and keeps it moving. One caveat: there are so many terrific options, you may find yourself coming back again and again.

For over 30 years he has toured the world leading his own ensembles on saxophone and flute, as a special guest, and as a sideman with Jazz greats Betty Carter, Wynton Marsalis, Freddie Hubbard, Tony Williams, Roy Haynes, and many others. Those Who Desire Nothing—
Possess Everything

hat does that saying really mean? It’s been a saying that I remember from my past experience in the martial arts and the research of martial arts masters. Does that mean I don’t desire nice things? That I don’t want success? That I don’t reach out and grab opportunities or set goals? Not really. I still do. But when so many of the martial arts masters from the past talked about this “effortless effort” and “detachment” it intrigued me. There is a fine line between the study of Zen and what we call achievement and success. To achieve something great you need to have a hunger, desire, tenacity and go after it with all your might. But that’s contradictory to what Zen emphasizes. The dictionary definition of Zen: An approach to an activity, skill, or subject that emphasizes simplicity and intuition rather than conventional thinking or fixation on goals. Does achievement without effort mean you don’t work hard? Not at all. It’s actually a detachment from the desire of caring too much about winning or caring too much about not winning—and that’s where it gets difficult to put your arms around. It is pure action with body and mind as one. Too much caring and desire
“Take no thought of who is right or wrong, or who is better than. Be not for or against.” —Bruce Lee
for winning will get in the way of the performance. There is a saying I have talked about in past columns, called Mushin, which means “no mind” or action without thinking. Yogi Berra said it best, “How can anybody hit and think at the same time”. Actions are pure and come naturally without thought. But the real key is detachment. Not to think and just do. Your body and mind are together and there are no thoughts disrupting the action. Because when you do not care you can be at ease. One of my favorite books on this subject is “Zen in the Martial Arts,” by Joe Hyams. He tells a story about when he was training with his sensei who told him to hit a baseball mitt that was kept perfectly still. As soon as Joe got ready to punch he tensed up and his sensei was aware of his intention and he moved the mitt before Joe could strike it. “Relax,” he said. “Stop straining. The less effort, the faster and more powerful you will be.” As soon as Joe relaxed his body and mind, he hit the target. His sensei told him, “You stopped caring whether you hit the mitt or not. It is the caring or desire which stands in the way of effortless effort. You must stop caring about doing it and just do it—effortlessly and naturally as snow falls from the tree or water bubbles up from the spring.” Barry Farber is a best-selling author, an award winning radio and television host as well as an agent and marketing consultant for corporations, professional athletes, and entertainers.
