The Livingston Rotary Supports Local Businesses and the Community

R

Rotary International is one of the largest service organizations in the world. The mission of Rotary is to provide service to others through fellowship of business, professional and community leaders. “Rotarians provide community service to both local and international communities. Being a Rotarian is exceedingly rewarding,” says Rotary Club of Livingston President, Debbie Kirchen, owner of Teacher Tutors and Brainiax. Rotary Club of Livingston was busy this past year. They provided portable echocardiography machines to screen school children in Nepal for rheumatic heart disease; raised money to end Polio, raised money for Cycle for Survival, Soccer for Dreamers, Ukraine American Cultural Center, Rise to Shine, and LNHN just to name a few. In addition, they volunteered at Friendship Circle, the Mt Pleasant Animal Shelter

and created a necessities store for Apostle’s House, a women’s shelter; they donated 1,000 dental care packages to NCJW/Essex; donated a stocked freezer to Livingston Neighbors Helping Neighbors; provided aid to Shiv’s Eye and participated at the Livingston Pride Picnic. Rotary offered Livingston’s Summerfest event to the community showcasing local businesses while raising money for the Livingston PBA and a hospital. There are many more amazing organizations that benefited from this organization’s charity work in the past year. Next up for the Rotary is the Nov. 6th Food Tasting fundraiser that will be held at The Hanover Manor. This event will support local restaurants and raise money for the Cooperman Barnabas NICU. This Fall, they are also donating the book “7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens,” to Livingston’s 6th graders to support their advisory classes.

SHOP FOR NEW AND GENTLY USED SPORTS GEAR

at Play It Again Sports

P

BY JACKIE SCHATELL, PHOTOS BY DAN EPSTEIN

Play It Again Sports recently opened its doors in Livingston. The store, owned by Jerry Ambooken, sells new and gently used sports and fitness equipment for children and adults to fit every budget. The goals are to reduce the financial burden for people who may be precluded from playing a sport due to the high cost of equipment and to keep things out of landfills. Jerry says that having three small children who have played many sports over the years has shown him first-hand how expensive purchasing sports equipment can be. As they get older, they age out of some of their equipment and need to buy more. Play It Again Sports affords parents the opportunity to trade in gently used items for new and like new ones. When selling to Play It Again Sports, customers can either get cash, or store credit to purchase anything in the store. “Play It Again Sports is the preferred store of value-conscious parents with growing kids because we buy, trade and sell quality used and new sports items of all types, which means great gear at great prices!” says Jerry. Since Play it Again Sports is a franchise, it uses its group buying power to purchase equipment from leading vendors at wholesale prices. The store then passes on these cost-savings to customers, making it a strong competitor of popular big box sporting goods stores.

Customers can find everything they need at Play it Again Sports, from bats and balls to hockey gear and everything in between. In addition, with pickleball being the fastest growing sport in America, the store not only sells great gear— this section will be expanding soon. Play it Again Sports also gives back to the community by sponsoring sporting associations, and offering fundraising programs, and seasonal discount cards. Jerry is very excited for more and more people to discover his hidden gem of a store. “I love going to work every day, meeting the people of the community and helping customers with their sporting goods needs,” he says.

CB PET MARKET IS LOCALS’ CHOICE FOR NUTRITION AND MORE

C

CB Pet Market of Livingston is celebrating five years of providing pet parents with top-quality, holistic food, the best supplements available, safe, fun toys, and pet essentials. President Claudia Loomis is proud her store has established itself as the locally owned, independent go-to place for pet nutrition, alongside welltrained, friendly customer service. “Nutrition is our mantra,” she said. “The pet foods we carry contain no corn, wheat, soy, or animal by-products.” While she believes “fresh is best,” CB Pet Market has nine doors of frozen raw food and freeze-dried foods, acknowledging customers’ time demands. “We meet our customers where they are in their nutrition journey,” she said. Those new to feeding pets raw foods can “add some freeze-dried food, goat milk, or bone broth to what they are already feeding their pet.” Raw goat milk is a CB Pet Market bestseller.

BY JANIS HASHE, PHOTOS BY DAN EPSTEIN Employees are educated on advising customers by participating in manufacturers’ training sessions on nutrition and new products. “There’s not one ‘best’ food. We have to ask questions,” said Loomis. “Each dog breed, for example, has specific nutritional needs.” Supplements can address allergies, joint problems, and skin and coat issues. CB Pet Market also carries CBD products that can help with anxiety. “We promote senior pet wellness, with products to help older pets live longer, more active lives,” she said. The store offers grooming services with professionals that have decades of experience grooming every dog and cat breed. Loyalty programs, including the Champion Club and the Grand Champion Club, plus a frequent buyer program, reward pet parents with a range of perks.

Loomis is committed to being a contributing community member. CB Pet Market partners with humane societies and rescues to sponsor in-store adoption events and supports the Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter and CARE Bearbox, which collects & delivers donated pet supplies and food to local shelters and rescues. The store participated in the Betty White Challenge and has worked with the Nature Conservancy to save New Jersey bobcats. In addition to in-store shopping, CB Pet Market offers pick-up and home delivery services. “We are always looking to make caring for your pet more convenient,” said Loomis.

HOUSE of DEZIGN

By Jackie Schatell

H

House of Dezign is a unique fashion design academy in New Jersey with beginner, intermediate, and advanced classes for children ages 6 through 12, teens 13 through 17, and adults. The fashion design courses are thoughtfully developed to nurture creativity and instill calm, focus, self-esteem, and a sense of accomplishment in each student. Aside from classes which include hand sewing, machine sewing, digital design, embroidery, crocheting, knitting, and upcycling, the design school also offers “Sip & Sew” nights, and bachelorette and birthday party packages. Students learn to design, make mood boards, create wearable garments and accessories, tailor garments, make patterns, drape, and sketch. Those looking to study design at college or professionally can create portfolios and collections. At House of Dezign, students also learn about the rich history, economic value, and cultural significance of fashion design. Classes are taught by experienced fashion design instructors using easy and clear terms to maintain interest. The founder of and creative spirit behind House of Dezign, Roya Ranjbar, says, “I’m eager to share my passion for and extensive experience with fashion to inspire young, creative minds. My classes allow learners to explore and develop their ideas in a safe, nurturing, calm, and focused environment.”

At B & Z Opticians, owner Ofer Steinberg, a licensed New Jersey optician, takes pride in “providing impeccable service and the ultimate experience in being fitted for the highest quality frames and lenses.” B & Z sells glasses that fit every budget and showcases designer glasses and sunglasses at affordable prices. Steinberg carries a full line of designer eyewear, including Anne & Valentin, Lindberg, Tom Ford, Gucci, and l.a. Eyeworks, to name a few. “Clients get the best looking and optically precise eyewear,” he says. He takes the time to get to know what the client is looking for and what fits their needs and lifestyle. Steinberg has an uncanny ability to suggest frames the client ultimately chooses and credits his keen visual perspective. “As I walk around the shop, I can visualize the shape of their face and recommend appropriate frames.” (continued on the next page)

A FACE IS LIKE A WORK OF ART, IT DESERVES A GREAT FRAME. – OFER STEINBERG

Block and Zuckerman, as the business is formerly known, dates back to 1951. Steinberg purchased it in 2014 and relocated from West Orange to its current Livingston location in 2019. The owner unabashedly notes that B & Z and he have a following. The business has served three to four generations of clients. A word-ofmouth reputation has helped Steinberg to build his client base. He welcomes those new to Livingston and the surrounding community to stop in and peruse his wide selection of eyewear. Steinberg began his career in the corporate optical industry and went on to manage private optical stores. He had a vision of creating the ideal optical boutique that focuses on exemplary customer service. He learned to excel in this aspect of owning a business by working in his parent’s luncheonettes. “I loved chatting with the customers,” he says. 26 | Inside Livingston | Fall 2023

Martina Wulf, Kerstan Nevin, Anne Hersh, and Debbie Picini A point of pride for Steinberg is that all the finishing work is done in-house. “I’ve always enjoyed working with my hands,” he notes. “I use the best quality and thinnest materials available and have the manual dexterity to produce lens perfection in the frame.” The optician hand-picks his staff. “I put them through a rigorous interview process because of the importance of customer care. My goal is to give impeccable service to others.” His objective has not gone unnoticed. B & Z Opticians has consistently been voted Best Optician in the Best of Essex Reader’s Choice Awards Contest, for the past six years. Steinberg envisions other goals fueled by his innate motivation and desire to achieve more. He is on the cusp of designing his own line of frames. “We strive for excellence in everything we do, from edging the highest in lens technology to selecting the finest frames for each individual’s face.” Come and get framed at B & Z Opticians!

Menorah Chapels at Millburn Treats Clients Like Family

F

“Funeral service is a helping profession so the transition from one type of helping profession to another was very smooth,” says Karen Ross Kerstein, president and manager of Menorah Chapels at Millburn. Before taking over for her father, Herbert Ross, who founded the business, Karen obtained her bachelor’s degree in education and psychology and later her master’s degree in guidance and counseling in order to become a vocational counselor. “Many of the positions I held were grant funded,” she says. “This was in the era when grant money was dwindling and my father offered me an opportunity I just couldn’t refuse. I went back to school again and after a year of rigorous training and internship, I obtained my license to practice Mortuary Science in 1983.” Although many skills can be learned, having a heart for helping comes from within. She continues to use her knowledge and her

innate compassion to provide solace to others. “At Menorah Chapels, every family we serve is treated like family by our staff,” she says. “This is very important when helping people at a very emotional time.” Located in Union, Menorah Chapels has been serving the Jewish community for over four decades. It’s the only strictly Jewish funeral home in Union County that maintains its own building and doesn’t share its facilities with any other funeral home. Menorah Chapels at Millburn can also arrange funerals worldwide. Regardless of where services take place, families’ religious, financial and sensitivity needs are always met.

PERSONALIZED, INDIVIDUALIZED & SPECIALIZED

Making Each Space Come Alive

W

BY CHRISTINE S. MAXWELL, PHOTO BY DAN EPSTEIN

When Adrienne Rich established A&R Interiors in 1979, she chose an old movie theatre in an art deco building in Morris County. In this building, she highlighted her vision to create unique designs reflecting the personalities of her clients. Likewise, when her daughter, Allyson, joined the company in 2016, she, too, searched for an unusual space. She chose an old gas station in Denville built in 1906 to expand and continue her mother’s vision. Today, in its Denville location, A&R Interiors includes an expanded fabric showroom, furnishings, and other home décor. Allyson and her design team have extensive experience in all design aspects—from planning to selection to installation. The company remains steadfast to its original mission to personalize, individualize, and specialize each space.

To begin, the designer interviews the prospective client to determine their needs, then considers priorities, budget, and lifestyle. Based on the clients’ goals, the team provides a complete design concept including any necessary construction as well as layering in all additional furniture accessories, wall décor, lighting and window treatments needed to make a house a home. The next stage includes construction and painting while awaiting the arrival of merchandise. Wallcoverings, floorcovering, and window treatments are installed prior to the arrival of the furniture and finishing touches. “We make everything beautiful,” says Allyson, “but first it must be functional.” “Our real signature is that we don’t repeat designs in any residential or commercial properties. Each property is unique,” says Allyson. “We make each space come alive.”

Pasquale, a former Software Engineer, has studied martial arts from karate to Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Both are certified as Recreational Coaches by USA Gymnastics.

Jackie and Pasquale Ranalli

So, when the opportunity arose last May to take over an existing kids’ gym, reopening as Livingston Gym, and serving children ages 1-12, they jumped at it. “We were looking for something where we could feel fulfilled and be with our children,” said Jackie. Several part-time assistants and one head gymnastics teacher also help instruct. Livingston Gym offers “Music & Movement” for ages 6-18 months; “Move & Tumble” for ages 18 months-4; “Fun Fitness & Gymnastics” for ages 4-6, and gymnastic classes for ages 6-12. There are also two-hour “Open Gym” times when parents can accompany their kids for free play time. “Open Gym” is a great opportunity, said the couple, for those new to their gym to get an idea of what is available—and how fun it can be. Pasquale described the three pillars of their philosophy: Action, Resilience, and Empathy. “Research supports that ‘playing’ in the right environment allows kids to become more resilient, as they overcome challenges, and to become more empathetic, as they support their friends in a cooperative activity,” he said. “We meet kids where they are, and they feel good about what they are capable of doing.” “Here, children can be comfortable and safe as they explore what their bodies can do… if they get that energy out, they also make better food and sleep choices,” said Jackie. Livingston Gym also hosts birthday parties, and during the school year, schedules three-hour “minicamps,” with gym time, arts and crafts, reading and snacks. Check the gym’s website for more information. “A big part of what we offer is that we are independent, and members of the community,” said Pasquale. “We want those who come here to feel they are part of a family.”

DOING IT HER WAY Optimal Healthcare for Women at Every Stage of Life BY SUE BALDANI

I

In 1996, Somi Javaid and Komel Caruso’s mother’s medical complaints were repeatedly dismissed as stress and anxiety. One day, she was rushed into emergency surgery and was extremely fortunate to have survived. It was then that Somi, who was already in medical school, was inspired to empower other women and make sure they were heard. But, after completing an OBGYN residency, the realities of the healthcare system prevented her from doing so. “She was seeing 40 to 50 patients a day with eight to 10 minute appointment slots,” says Komel. After 15 years plus of practicing, Dr. Javaid realized that in order to give women the time, education and compassionate care they deserved, she needed to open her own practice. In 2015, she and Komel founded HerMD. Today, there are five physical locations in five different states, include one in Millburn, NJ. With appointments ranging from 20 to 60 minutes, and medical care provided by experienced board-certified doctors and nurse practitioners specially trained in sexual health care and menopause, women are finally receiving the proper care.

“There’s still a stigma around talking about sexual health and menopause, so women are suffering in silence without any treatment options because only 20% of OBGYNs are trained in menopause care,” says Komel. There are a broad range of services offered at HerMD, including general gynecology. There’s a laboratory and ultrasound on site. “We also have the ability to perform minimally-invasive surgical procedures on site,” she says. “We’re fixing that broken healthcare system with our outcomes and also having truly comprehensive healthcare under one roof.”

When it comes to finding optimal healthcare for women, it can be difficult no matter who you are. She says actress Melissa Gilbert, who lives in upstate New York, recently drove over two hours to HerMD in Millburn. Today, she says the practice is changing her life. Another patient commented, “I have found the heart of my health in the hands of these providers.”

BY JACKIE SCHATELL, PHOTO BY DAN EPSTEIN

Dieci Lifestyle Spa, which is always on the cutting-edge of new and trendy hair styles, is now offering the Rëzo cut that is perfect for people with curly and wavy hair. It is essentially a reverse haircut. Clients come in with clean, air-dried hair—the bigger, the better—and the stylist creates a haircut with longevity by looking at all of the client’s hair patterns and carving out a cut that can be worn curly, air-dried, diffused, and even straight. The stylist also educates clients on their hair texture, offering advice for maximizing their natural curls and products that will work best.

Stylist Eva Humber with Rëzo client

Stylist Eva Humber, who has been cutting hair for over 18 years, says she had an aha moment one day after watching a young girl with curly hair have it blown straight. “She looked like she was so uncomfortable, and I thought, there has to be a better way to help

clients with curly hair,” says Eva. She did some research, and took a course to become Rëzo-certified in NYC. Eva is now excited to be offering this hairstyle and cut to her clients. In addition to haircuts, Dieci offers other services to enhance their clients’ curls, such as: curl steaming, clarifying, deep conditioning, and hair coloring— training their clients to embrace and love their curls! “At Dieci, our motto is to Love your Hair and celebrate your hair texture! Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center Places Final Steel Beam for New Cancer Center Building

C

Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center (CBMC), an RWJBarnabas Health facility, raised the final steel beam on its freestanding Cancer Center, now under construction. Cancer survivors, oncology department staff, board members, and donors added their signatures to the steel beam during morning and evening ceremonies — leaving their permanent mark on the five-story, 137,000-squarefoot facility. Scheduled for 2025 completion, the $225-million outpatient facility on CBMC’s Livingston campus will serve as the northern hub for the integrated oncology services offered by RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, the state’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. “Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center is a regional leader in cancer care, and with the construction of this state-of-the-art facility, we are setting a new standard for top-quality care,” said Richard L. Davis, the hospital’s President and CEO. “With world-class amenities and a team that includes some of the top cancer specialists in the nation, the new Cancer Center will be a premier destination for patient-centered and research-driven cancer care in this region and beyond.” “There is absolutely nothing more important to our community than having 38 | Inside Livingston | Fall 2023

best-in-class health care. The creation of a state-of-the-art cancer center here at CBMC represents one of the most significant events in this community and continues the ongoing growth and transformation of the Medical Center. Our vision of reimagining cancer care could not have occurred without the generosity and support of our many donors. We are grateful for their support and to everyone who has played a role in bringing this project to life,” said Bruce Schonbraun, Chair of the Board of Trustees at CBMC. At the new Cancer Center, patients will have access to medical, surgical, and radiation oncology services under one roof, with amenities that include a wig and prosthetic studio, yoga classes, music therapy, and psychosocial support services. Private infusion rooms and short-term and extended-stay facilities will also be available. “The Cancer Center at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center is part of an overall major investment by RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Cancer Institute to transform oncology services across the state including the construction of the Jack and Sheryl Morris Cancer Center, the state’s first freestanding cancer hospital,” said Steven K. Libutti, M.D., Director of Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and Senior Vice President, Oncology Services at RWJBarnabas Health.

The medical center’s partnership with Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey provides patients access to the most advanced treatment options, including clinical trials, CAR T-cell therapy, immunotherapy, and precision medicine. “This new Cancer Center will be synonymous with clinical excellence, collaboration, and a commitment to integrated care, delivered by world-class physicians and specialists,” said Michael Scoppetuolo, M.D., Medical Director of the Cancer Center at CBMC. “This is what the future of cancer care looks like in the Garden State and beyond. I’m honored to be a part of it.” “Cancer treatment is getting more targeted and precise every year,” added Alison Grann, M.D., Chair of the hospital’s Department of Radiation Oncology and the Northern Region Director of Radiation Oncology, RWJBarnabas Health. “The Cancer Center will provide patients with the most advanced multidisciplinary, patient-centric cancer care available in one central location.” More information about the new center is available online, at rwjbh.org/cbmccancercenter

A Comforting Concierge Dental Practice

A

PHOTO BY DAN EPSTEIN At Bagoff-Levenbrook Dental Arts, keeping patients happy and healthy in a soothing environment is the top priority. Founder Robert M. Bagoff, DMD and his colleague Steven M. Levenbrook, DDS concentrate their practice in family, implant, and cosmetic dentistry. Through hundreds of hours of continuing education, they offer their patients gentle care using state-of-the-art technology. This includes a computerized anesthesia device to numb only specific areas of the mouth, low-dose intra-oral radiography, digital imaging of the teeth and gums, and various laser-assisted treatments. Along with technology, Drs. Bagoff and Levenbrook use good old-fashioned communication to put their patients at ease. According to Dr. Bagoff, “Most people’s fear of the dentist comes from fear of pain—fear that they won’t be fully numb during a procedure. We talk our patients through every procedure that we feel they need, and we take as much time as needed to help them to feel comfortable with what we’re going to do.”

No procedure is too big or too small—from smile-improving porcelain laminates to full implant dentistry. Dr. Bagoff explains, “Implants are root substitutes. We have a 3-D cone beam scan and a digital oral scan right in our office, which enable us to perform the most conservative dental implant surgery possible.” Both Drs. Bagoff and Levenbrook teach in the Continuing Dental Education implant program at the NYU College of Dentistry, and they recently published a chapter in Modern Implant Dentistry, called “Bone Grafting and Guided Tissue Regeneration.” In addition to state-of-the-art technology and techniques, Bagoff Dental Arts also offers non-dental services for out-of-town and international patients. “Concierge services have been part of this practice for over 25 years,” states Dr. Bagoff. He adds, “We have patients coming from Israel and Italy, and we can arrange Uber rides for them, and we also make restaurant and sightseeing recommendations.”

Robert M. Bagoff, DMD and Steven M. Levenbrook, DDS

“When patients first walk into our reception area, they will see a fish tank, a fireplace, and a TV. We really want everyone to feel calm and comfortable here,” says Dr. Bagoff.

DIAMOND MINDS

IN SEARCH OF THE MAGIC TREE…

O

The 5 Secrets

One of my first books that came out in 1995 was called Diamond in the Rough. It was based on the top traits of high achievers ranging from business leaders, top entertainers, sports legends, to inventors and brain surgeons. I created an audiobook, radio and tv show around the title and was relentless in bringing the book to the biggest direct sales teams in the country ranging from Mary Kay to Amway. Many of them had the goal of each rep becoming a diamond. So that was why I titled the book… Diamond in the Rough. The book became an international best-seller in multiple

languages and has been the inspiration for the foundation of my children’s book, The Adventures of Little Billy… IN SEARCH OF THE MAGIC TREE. Each of the animals in the story have Barry Farber been given the essential traits of the key chapters in Diamond in the Rough. Here are a few of the traits that have become the 5 Secrets in The Adventures of Little Billy that can be applied in our everyday lives:

Lawrence the Owl

Bosco the Bear

“Help all the animals that you see, and you shall find The Magic Tree.”

“Give a smile to all you see, and you shall find The Magic Tree.”

I think the Owl and Zig Ziglar both agree that our rewards in life are in direct proportion to our service. “You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help enough other people get what they want.”

It’s not just my opinion that attitude is essential for success. A study conducted by Harvard Business School determined that four factors are critical for success in business; information, intelligence, skill, and attitude. When these factors were ranked in importance, this particular study found that information, intelligence, and skill combined amounted to 7% of business success, and attitude amounted to 93%! What is true for business is also true for our lives—Attitude is overwhelmingly one of the most important factors to success.

(Lawrence’s Secret: Service)

(Bosco’s Secret: Attitude)

Sheba the Wolf (Sheba’s Secret: Courage)

“Be as brave as you can be, and you shall find The Magic Tree.” There are many definitions of courage. They have to do with mental and moral strength to resist danger or hardship—firmness of mind and will in the face of extreme difficulty—and the capacity to meet adversity with fortitude and resilience. My favorite definition of courage is “readiness to deal with things fearlessly by reason of stouthearted temperament or a resolute spirit.”

Sherman the Turtle

(Sherman’s Secret: Determination) “Never give up on a dream that could be, and you shall find The Magic Tree.”

Ruppert the Toad

(Ruppert’s Secret: Empathy) “Look on the inside of those you see, and you shall find The Magic Tree.” “The nature of humanity, it’s essence, is to feel another’s pain as one’s own, and to act to take that pain away. There is nobility in compassion, a beauty in empathy, a grace in forgiveness.” -John Connolly

“The miracle, or the power, that elevates the few is to be found in their industry, application, and perseverance under the promptings of a brave, determined spirit.” -Mark Twain The Adventures of

The Secrets that Little Billy discovers on his adventure seem like common sense to many of us, but then again common sense isn’t so common. We all just need a little reminder of what’s important and the Magic will be there. See the animation on YouTube for FREE! Just search: The Adventures of Little Billy
