Seventh Grader Creates Cake Making Kits for Toni’s Kitchen
Kyle Brown of Caldwell created a unique Mitzvah project—he collected cake supplies to make cake kits to be distributed at Toni’s Kitchen in Montclair. The kits consisted of cake mix, frosting, candles, disposable baking pans, and Sprite soda to replace eggs. A local Boy Scout troop helped him pack up the kits. In all, he donated 90 kits to Toni’s. He says he found the recipe for the cake on the internet. He hopes to spread this idea to others who can create kits like this for people who can’t afford to buy all of the necessities to bake cakes for birthdays and other holiday celebrations. “It feels good to give comfort to people and help them celebrate birthdays and special occasions,” says Kyle.
Owner of Ultrafooty Gives Back
Dylan Evande, who runs a soccer program called Ultrafooty out of Livingston recently took a trip to Buea, Cameroon, which is where his family is from, to deliver new and like new soccer cleats, balls, shirts and shorts to some local people who would be playing in a charity soccer match he had planned at Buea Municipal Stadium. Dylan is also a professional soccer player, who plays for Flower City Union, out of Rochester, NY. His Ultrafooty professional development soccer program is designed for devoted players of all ages. He says, “Soccer is the tool he uses to help people become the best versions of themselves.” Dylan hopes to set an example for his students about doing good for others. He is already beginning to collect items for next year’s trip to Cameroon. Those interested in donating, can drop off items at Ultrafooty, which is located at 93 Dorsa Avenue, in Livingston.
Teens Start Journaling Club for Middle Schoolers
Tenth graders, Willa Brooks-La Blanc and Ila Bhattacharjee, of Montclair, have started a journaling club for middle schoolers called, Journal With Us. It is a low-pressure and encouraging way to help young teens express themselves. The girls come up with prompts, and encourage members to write down their thoughts and feelings. Then, members of the group, who are interested, read what they have written. Some write poems. Willa says that it feels good to see how creative everyone has been. Ila likes how everyone interprets prompts differently. The girls hope to run more sessions in the future. The classes meet on Sundays, from 2-3 pm at the Montclair Library. Sign up information is available at the library.

Acton Academy Celebrates 5th Anniversary
Acton Academy Verona is celebrating its 5th Anniversary by continuing to mark students’ milestones and by holding special days throughout the year to reflect on accomplishments and celebrate. Acton Academy is a unique, child-centered school, accepting children from kindergarten through middle school, focused on cultivating lifetime learning and 21st century skills. At Acton Academy, learning is self-paced so students have a chance to learn at their own speed in a Montessori-inspired environment. The school is governed by rules created by the students. Every year, all the rules are wiped clean, and students come up with new ones, holding themselves and each other accountable. “Every child is a genius and has a unique gift to bring to this world,” says Kai Olderog, who leads the school. “It is beautiful to see the students develop a sense of self, love learning, and blossom.”

Cedar Bean’s Coffee Joint Offers Much More Than Coffee
By Jackie Schatell
When Dave Fletcher, owner of Cedar Bean’s Coffee Joint in Cedar Grove, set out to open his shop in 2018, he had a few things in mind—he wanted to be a place where people could congregate and feel like a community, where artists and musicians could share their art, and he wanted to give back. He has achieved these goals in spades.
“We try to be a place for everyone where people from all walks of life will feel comfortable hanging out,” he says.
The business is a small-batch coffee shop with freshly roasted, third-wave artisan beans, triplefiltered nitro cold brews, whole-leaf teas, and delicious home-baked treats. Seasonal coffees are sourced from farms in El Salvador, Columbia, Ethiopia, Bali, Guatemala, South America, Africa and more.
But Cedar Bean’s Coffee Joint is a lot more than just coffee. Dave strives to help others every chance he gets, whether he is raising money for organizations or schools, donating coffee to events and causes, delivering toys to children for Christmas, holding food drives for the Human Needs Pantry, or having the Scouts selling their cookies and popcorn just outside the coffee house.
He also supports local artists, musicians, and the Cedar Grove Artists Alliance via receptions, open mic nights, and live music shows. Gallery artists are allowed to sell their art, and a portion of the sales is donated back to programs for the arts. Dave even has the students from the High School come and perform songs from their plays there.
All one needs to do is look at the robust calendar of events with craft nights, paint and sip events, meditations, and more, to see that there is a lot going on at Cedar Beans Coffee Joint.
Dave Fletcher
Dave says, “People need positivity in their lives. One of the privileges of running a small business in this community is that people get to know you and look up to you. Doing good is good for humanity.”

A Local Family of GHOSTBUSTERS Raises Money for Charity
By Jackie Schatell
Giselle and Ryan Espin of West Caldwell have an unusual hobby – they are Ghostbusters. They are members of a NY-based Ghostbusters movie fan group that was established in 2012. They also co-own a 22-footlong replica of the Ghostbusters car that was driven in the Ghostbusters movie that came out in 2016 starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, Dan Aykroyd and Chris Hemsworth. It is a 1983 Cadillac Hearse that they have renovated and has a license plate that says, “ECTO NYC.”
The Espins also have personalized uniforms for themselves, their son, who is 4, and their infant daughter. Along with other members of their fan group, they do walking tours of NYC showing participants Ghostbusters’ movie filming locations. They also run Ghostbusters-themed Slime Lab STEM events and parties.
In addition, each year, the Espins raise money for local charities including Trinity Place, a shelter for LGBTQ homeless people. Last year, they raised $2,800 for
Trinity. They dressed up in their uniforms, drove the Ghostbusters car, and brought food to the shelter when they dropped off the check. The Espins hope to raise more money this year. Ryan and Giselle also held a telethon last year where they raised $4,000 to purchase toys for children in a Brooklyn homeless shelter.
Ryan says, “I feel happy with what we do. As a kid, I always wanted to be a Ghostbuster and now I am a web designer during the week and a Ghostbuster on the weekends.”

PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY BREAKTHROUGH!
What do all of these people have in common? They suffer from Peripheral Neuropathy. It is estimated that more than 20 million people in the United States have Peripheral Neuropathy. Unfortunately, this figure may be significantly higher as the disease is often misdiagnosed because of its wide array of symptoms.
Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM, LAc of Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine in Montclair, shares this belief. “I’ve been treating Neuropathy, in all its various forms for over a decade and so often my patients come to me because of the symptoms, not because of a diagnosis. They saw one of my newspaper articles or read the testimonial of another patient and say to themselves, ‘hey, I feel the same thing.’”
Doris M. of Little Falls testified to this, “I remember my husband driving me to my consultation and I saw a woman running just outside our neighborhood. I was so envious—I just kept thinking, ‘I would give anything just to walk again.’ My primary care doctor told me my troubles with pain and balance were just symptoms of old age and gave me a prescription. I was so depressed.”
Fortunately, Doris would eventually see Dr. Aleksandra in a local newspaper talking about similar symptoms and how she offers a real solution. “I just knew I had to see her. She was my last hope.”
“Almost all of our patients come to us with a story similar to Doris’. They’ve been everywhere else. They’ve been told there’s no hope. They’ve been told ‘it’s just part of getting older’.” Shares Olivia, a Patient Care Coordinator. “It just breaks my heart, but I know how much we can help people like Doris, so I’m always so happy when they walk through our door.”
Those diagnosed with Peripheral Neuropathy often face a very grim reality: Western medicine declares that there is no solution. Which is why Dr. Aleksandra and the staff at Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine pride themselves on being ‘the last resort with the best results.’
Peripheral Neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves and this damage is commonly caused by lack of blood flow in the hands and feet. A lack of blood flow results in a lack of nutrients: the nerves then begin to degenerate and die which causes pain ranging from discomfort to debilitating. Because Neuropathy is a degenerative condition, once those nerves begin to deteriorate, they will continue to do so until they are completely expired, leaving those suffering with crippling balance issues. “In this case, the absence of pain is not necessarily a good thing.” explains Dr. Aleksandra. “This usually indicates that your nerves are hanging on by a fragile thread.”
So how exactly is Dr. Aleksandra able to reverse the effects of this degenerative disease? “Acupuncture improves your chances of a full recovery. has been used to increase blood flow for thousands of years which helps to get the necessary nutrients to the affected nerves. But the real magic happens when I integrate ATP Resonance Bio Therapy™. This is tech that was originally developed by NASA to expedite recovering and healing.”
“I just can’t say enough about Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine,” Doris shared through tears of joy. “My husband and I moved here 3 years ago, and he’s gone for a hike or a walk in the park almost every day since. I always stayed home because of the pain and discomfort.
Yesterday I walked through the park with him! And next week we’re starting
ballroom dancing lessons. I am truly living life these days.”
“According to Doris’ test results, she has seen a 71% improvement in pain and functionality, which is on par with a majority of our patients,” shares Olivia.
“But more important than those test results is the joy she’s expressed being here and hearing about all the amazing things she’s able to do because she feels great!”
By seamlessly blending the ancient science of acupuncture with modern medical solutions Dr. Aleksandra has achieved a 88% success rate in reversing the effects of Neuropathy. She starts each patient with an initial consultation during which a sensory exam is performed. “This not only aids in making a proper diagnosis but it helps to define just how much nerve damage has occurred. This is important because if a patient has suffered more than 95% damage, there is little that I can do to help them. I am familiar with the medical miracle, but I know my limits as a practitioner and the limits of my medicine.”
When it comes to treating Peripheral Neuropathy, regardless of its origin, early detection greatly improves your chances of a full recovery.
If you or someone you love are suffering with chronic pain that presents as burning, tingling, pins and needles or you have recently been diagnosed with Peripheral Neuropathy, it is important to know that there are options. There is hope.

The Bee Project, An Exhibition
The Museum of Early Trades & Crafts (METC) is excited to participate in THE BEE PROJECT, an innovative new exhibit that includes an outdoor installation. The Bee Project is a series of multi-dimensional modular structures that mimic the honeycomb pattern in beehives that will be installed on the museum’s front lawn. The structures are welded from carbon steel mesh in the shape of hexagons and painted yellow. These yellow hexagons will vary in height from 3 to 6 feet and be placed in various compositions, adding a vibrant and meaningful element into the fibers of the community.
The exhibit is an interactive and creative way to raise awareness about our fragile ecosystems and help ensure the future of pollinators. The structures will be a base for handcrafted bees fashioned from reclaimed objects and recycled plastics that will be created by museum visitors, students in our Craft Club, fellow artists, and educators.
The Bee Project involves art, education, and science to draw attention to human-caused threats to the honeybee colonies and wild bees worldwide. The museum will be hosting art workshops and a series of lectures focusing on these topics. On April 3 or 4, 1-4pm, families can register to “Bee” a part of the new outdoor installation where they will create replicas of bees from recycled materials to populate the exhibit.

Help CASA for Children of Essex County and Prevent Child Abuse
April is Childhood Abuse Prevention Month. This month and throughout the year, CASA for Children of Essex County encourages everyone to play a role in making Essex County a safer home for children and families. By ensuring that families have the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to care for their children, we can help promote the social and emotional well-being of children and prevent child mistreatment within families and communities.
National Child Abuse Prevention Month is more than just raising awareness about the reality of child abuse. It is about taking action to reduce it. Essex County can join in this national effort by providing our families with the support they need. Certain issues, such as a family’s neighborhood, income level, or other societal factors can make parenting more challenging. By reducing these vulnerabilities through strengths-based approaches that truly support families, we begin to mitigate child abuse and improve the future for struggling families.
To make child abuse less likely to occur, we need to invest in our community and our families—consider collaborating with family and strength-based focused organizations and programs such as CASA Essex. Becoming a CASA volunteer places community members in a unique position to serve foster youth at a deeper level. CASA volunteers lift the voices of our most vulnerable children and advocate objectively for their needs during the time they spend in foster care. Currently, there are substantially more foster children in need of a CASA volunteer than there are volunteers available.
All children deserve to grow up in safe, supportive environments, help make this possible by learning more about what it means to become a CASA volunteer—help change a child’s story.

Compassionate Downsizing
Louis Mauriello, owner of Champion Waste Removal, has noticed changes in people since the pandemic. People spent more time inside their homes with more time to see what they wanted to replace, keep or finally let go of. There are a lot of reasons people want, or even need to downsize. Moving to a new home, getting rid of furniture to make way for new stuff, or just to give the house a thorough spring or fall cleaning are the most common.
Parting with belongings can be an emotional experience, especially for seniors who may not have family members nearby to help them make decisions, or do the heavy lifting. “We don’t rush our customers,” says Louis. “We adapt our work style to work with our customers in a way that makes them feel comfortable.
The style is called compassionate downsizing and it is a specialty of Champion Waste Removal. The company’s home clean-out services are geared to the needs of the customer. There is no minimum charge and time frames are not rushed. “To some customers, the items and number of things they
want to get rid of can seem insurmountable, but this is what we do every day,” says Louis. “We can guide them every step of the way.”

The Benefits of Playing Bridge
Learn a New Skill, Meet Others and Have Fun!
By Sue Baldani
The Plaza Bridge Club was founded approximately 45 years ago and is part of the national American Bridge Association (ABA). Games are played every Tuesday evening beginning at 6:30 at the Catchings Recreation Suite in Montclair. “We offer free lessons from 6-6:30pm,” says club president, Jawanza Phoenix. “There’s no minimum age and players come from all walks of life.” Just show up ready to play.
The benefits of playing bridge include improved concentration, plus math, problem-solving, logic, communication and social skills. “I can personally attest to an improved attention span, better concentration and less distractibility since I started learning the game,” he says. “It also provides unique opportunities for scholarships, awards and recognition of your accomplishments.”
For young people, it’s a fun way to build skills, and for older participants, it’s a great way to meet people and stay sharp. “It’s a priceless endeavor that never stops giving back,” says Jawanza.

Your Real Estate Needs: From Start to Finish
Fern Felsenheld knows that buying or selling a home is one of the most important financial transactions a person can make. A realtor in Northern New Jersey counties for more than 17 years, she knows residential and construction sales inside out.
Her unique background with 25 years in all facets of business marketing gives her the right skills to handle both the needs of buyers and sellers quickly and efficiently, with a written plan in a booklet to assist in the home buying or selling process from start to finish. Fern boasts a track record of selling listings within three to five days, often with multiple offers, and all recent home sales have received offers above the listed prices.
She maintains that the best way to choose a realtor is not by the number of houses sold by that realtor but rather by the comfort level and expertise they offer. “You want to trust and know your agent is with you through the entire process,” she says.

“Richie is busier now with his music career than he has been in years with multiple projects”, said his manager David Stone. “The time has come where he wants to start winding down from performing now that he is approaching 79. Richie’s health is terrific, and he now has additional time in his life to devote to his family, and more vacation traveling with his wife Nancy”. While Furay will continue to perform infrequent shows throughout this year, Stone is hopeful to have Furay return to SOPAC one last time in May 2024 for his 80th birthday concert and final farewell show.

JANET BOLTAX A Thing For Faces
Story and portrait by Dan Epstein
Verona resident Janet Boltax grew up in Queens, NY. Her father, a painter in his own right, gave her a set of oil paints at ten years old, and she hasn’t looked back since.
At 25, she plunged herself into classes at the Art Students League of New York, while supporting herself by waitressing. When life found her a wife and mother in Montclair with kids in school during the day, she began painting as a full time effort.
Boltax tells us that she likes to paint portraits in a thematic series. “As long as I can remember,” she says, “I have had an affinity for older people… as a portrait painter I find they often have the most interesting faces to paint.” As such she has created a series of portraits of people between the ages of 90 and 104. Gladys, a 36x36 inch oil on canvas, is a tightly framed image of her 92 year old subject in which we can see a lot of what life has held for this subject, as well as a lively spark aiming toward a future.
Intrigued by twins and the idea of two people sharing the same DNA, Boltax found twins of all ages to include in that portrait series. Seeing Double, is a 40x30 inch oil-on-canvas of infants named Cosmic and Crescent. The thing about identical twins is that even though they’re the same, they’re not. Herein Boltax shows us similarity and difference, in this portrait of toddlers.
Lilah, a 12x16 inch graphite on paper drawing captures the ten-year-old grandniece of the artist. Unlike her paintings, in this case Boltax, forsaking her oils and using only a minimal amount of line and shading, has masterfully captured the impish quality of this child. We can simply feel her personality as she smiles back at us and in delight wonder what’s on her mind.
If you find yourself as intrigued by her work as we are, or might want to study with her, you can see quite a bit more of her work and learn more about the artist herself on her website.

In business for over 72 years, family-ownedand-operated Reno’s Appliance has been continuously offering its customers the best in brands, selection and service. Located in Paterson, brothers John, Jim and Paul Cioletti carry on their father’s tradition of always putting customers first. “We care about people,” says John. “We go the extra mile, and if they ever have an issue, we do our best to satisfy them.”

FAMILY VALUES AND SMART BUSINESS PRACTICES
(continued from the previous page)
Over the years, he says, they have relied on reputation and word of mouth to keep customers coming through their doors. “It’s a low pressure situation, and our salesforce is second to none,” he says. “They’ve been with us for years, have a lot of experience, and are very knowledgeable.”
Reno’s boasts a 16,000-square foot designer showroom so customers can see, feel and touch what they’re buying. And, they even have a corporate chef, who they keep on staff, to demonstrate products. “She’ll do cooking demos and she’s really great at educating people about our appliances.”
The store carries appliances that provide high performance and the latest technology, such as smart ovens, dishwashers and grills. Other popular items include combination steam ovens and outdoor pizza ovens.
“Through the pandemic, people started to concentrate more on home life as opposed to going out,” says John. “That still carries forward today. They’re focusing on entertaining at home and they’re spending more money and putting in more elaborate indoor and outdoor spaces.”
Many brands offer appliances such as ranges and hoods that come in vibrant colors. “If you want to inject some color into your kitchen, you can customize your appliances and make it a little more of your own.”
Redoing your home can be frustrating at times, he says, especially these days with supply chain issues, so Reno’s tries to ease homeowners’ minds. “We try to make buying

appliances the best and least stressful part of their renovation process.”
In addition to being the president and CEO of Reno’s Appliance, John is an associate vice chair of New Jersey Builders Association, and is also on the board of Saint Joseph’s Medical Center. “We believe in giving back by supporting local charities and outreach programs,” he says.
John and his brothers have been recognized for their efforts. Just last year, Reno’s received the prestigious Greater Paterson Chamber of Commerce Faith in Paterson award. “The Mayor of Paterson gave us the award at a gala event with over 400 people in attendance. We’ve also received proclamations from the sheriff’s department and from the State of New Jersey.”
They are very proud of these awards. “My brothers and I try to do the right things and sometimes it’s nice when people recognize it,” says John.

Spring Cleaning Outdoor Surfaces
Power washing, also known as pressure washing, is an effective way to clean various outdoor surfaces, including the exterior of your home. A pressure washer can remove dirt, grime, mold, and other contaminants from your siding, decks, patios, and other outdoor surfaces. However, before you start power washing your home, there are a few things to consider.
Evaluate the condition of your home’s exterior. If your siding is old, worn, or damaged, power washing may cause further damage. In this case, you may want to consider repairing or replacing the siding before power washing. Similarly, if you have any loose or damaged trim, windows, or other exterior features, it’s best to address these issues before power washing to prevent further damage.
Consider the type of surface you are cleaning. Different surfaces require different levels of pressure and cleaning solutions. For example, a wooden deck may require lower pressure and a gentler cleaning solution than a concrete
driveway. It’s important to research the appropriate cleaning methods and solutions for each surface to avoid causing damage.
Make sure you have the right equipment and protective gear. A pressure washer can be dangerous if not used correctly, so it’s important to wear protective gear, including eye and ear protection, and to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Additionally, you’ll need to choose the right nozzle and pressure setting for each surface to avoid causing damage.
Homeowners should be concerned about plants and animals when using cleaning solutions during power washing. Many pressure washing solutions are formulated with chemicals that can be harmful to plants and animals, especially if used in high concentrations or applied directly to them.
To minimize the risk of harm, it’s important to carefully read the instructions on the cleaning solution and use it only as directed. This may include diluting the solution with water or using it only
in specific areas where it won’t come in contact with plants or animals. You can also take additional precautions by covering nearby plants and other outdoor features with plastic or tarps before power washing.
Additionally, homeowners should be mindful of where the runoff from the power washing will go. If the cleaning solution runs off into nearby soil or water sources, it can also harm plants and animals in those areas. To avoid this, you can direct the runoff away from plants and into an area where it can be safely disposed of, such as a sewer drain.

Kitchen Remodeling Layouts Have Evolved to Reflect Changing Lifestyles
Open concept layouts have become increasingly popular. In the past, kitchens were often separated from the rest of the home by walls and doors. Today, homeowners are knocking down those barriers to create a more open and inviting space. Many homeowners now want their kitchen to blend seamlessly with their living and dining areas. This means that kitchen layouts may include areas for casual seating and entertaining, such as a bar or breakfast nook.
Kitchen islands have been a popular feature for many years, but in the past decade, they have grown. Many homeowners are now opting for larger islands that can serve multiple functions, such as seating, storage, and food prep.
With more people cooking and entertaining at home, kitchen layouts have evolved to include multiple work zones. This means that kitchens may have separate areas for food prep, cooking, and cleanup, to allow multiple people to work in the kitchen without getting in each other’s way.
As technology has become more integrated into our daily lives, it has also made its way into kitchen design. Smart appliances, such as ovens that can be controlled from a smartphone and refrigerators with built-in touchscreens, are becoming more popular.
Whether you’re planning a full kitchen remodel or just an update, Gargulio Builders, LLC can help you visualize different styles within your space.

Countertop Natural and Engineered Stones: A Comparison
Stone countertops are not only an essential component of any modern kitchen or bathroom, in addition to providing functional work surface, they can transform the aesthetics of a room. There are two main types of stone countertops: natural and engineered. Each has its own unique characteristics that make them suitable for different applications.
Natural stones such as granite, marble, quartzite, and soapstone are mined from the earth and cut into slabs for use as countertops. They are known for their beauty and durability, with each slab being unique in terms of color, pattern, and texture. Natural stones are heat-resistant and can vary in terms maintenance. The porosity factor of some natural stones can lead to staining, and some can etch from acidic substances such as lemon juice. Sealing and wiping up spills quickly can help to protect from staining, but not also for etching. That is why it is important to review each natural stone’s care and maintenance during the selection process.
Engineered stones are made from a combination of natural stone particles and resin. They are highly durable, nonporous, and require minimal maintenance. Engineered stones are available in a wide range of colors and patterns, making
them a popular choice for modern kitchens. One of the main disadvantages of engineered stones is that they lack the uniqueness of natural stones. They are also not as heat resistant as natural stones and can crack under extreme temperatures. The price range varies from brand to brand and within each brand, with some varieties costing more than natural stones.
When choosing a countertop stone, it is important to consider your budget, aesthetic preferences, and functional requirements. Working with master craftsmen is also important when installing either natural or engineered stones. Apex

The Benefits of Adding a Mudroom
If you’re looking to increase the functionality of your home, consider adding a mudroom. A mudroom is an entryway that serves as a transition space between the outdoors and the indoors. Here are some of the benefits.
Increased organization: A mudroom provides a designated area to store coats, shoes, backpacks, and other outdoor gear keeping clutter from spreading throughout your living space.
Improved cleanliness: By having a space to remove muddy boots or wet coats, you can keep your floors and carpets clean. A mudroom can also serve as a place to wipe down pets.
Added storage: A mudroom can provide additional storage space for cleaning supplies, sports equipment, and gardening tools.
Energy savings: A mudroom can help improve your home’s energy efficiency by creating an additional barrier against the elements.
Increased home value: Adding a mudroom can increase your home’s value by improving its functionality and providing added storage.
Adding a handsome mudroom to your home can make your daily life more organized and efficient.

A Beautiful Landscape Design Adds Value to Your Home
One of the newer trends in gracious living is to expand your home’s living space to the outdoors. While a return on your investment may not be your primary motivation, it’s great to know that a well-designed landscape can actually have a significant impact on the value of your property. According to some estimates, a custom landscape can add up to 20% to the value of your property.
So, in addition to enjoying the increased usefulness, curb appeal, security, and beauty of outdoor entertaining and living spaces, you will also be increasing the market value of your home.
Curb Appeal
The first impression of your home is often based on its exterior appearance. Landscaping can greatly enhance the curb appeal of a property, making it more attractive and inviting. A tasteful landscape with well-maintained lawn, trimmed bushes, and colorful plantings, can make a property look more inviting now and more appealing, should you decide to market your property.
Outdoor Living Spaces
Outdoor living spaces create the perfect spot to entertain and impress. In fact, a popular trend now is to expand your living areas by designing an extension to your home and creating an oasis to match your lifestyle and enhance your outdoor entertainment space. Careful planning should continue your home’s design, style and aesthetic as a true extension… into your very own “great outdoors”. Regardless of the outdoor living design you choose, a stylish, one-of-a-kind backyard living space will surely result in added value to your home and your lifestyle.
Outdoor kitchens, poolscapes and even pavilions are tremendously popular as more and more people want to expand their living space and outdoor entertainment possibilities. Today it is not unusual to find outdoor kitchen and dining areas with built-in grills, ovens, refrigerators, sinks, bread warmers, wine chillers, and many other available luxury amenities. Adding an outdoor kitchen and dining area will move the party outdoors where you can create a perfect place so guests can gather to enjoy food and conversation.
Landscape Lighting
Landscape lighting will add drama and elegance to your home’s exterior. Accentuate the architectural features of your home, such as columns, arches, and gables, making them stand out in the nighttime landscape. Illuminated pathways and walkways can make family and guests safer and more secure, while
enhancing the beauty of your landscape. Artfully installed lighting can highlight the natural beauty of your plants and landscape features, drawing attention to your home’s most beautiful focal points that interest and depth to your outdoor spaces.
The Bottom Line
A beautiful landscape can make your home more useful, secure and inviting while increasing the value of your residence by 15-20%… and make your property far more marketable due to the “WOW” factor. From inspiration to installation, professional landscape architects, designers, project managers, and certified professional landscapers can work together to create, install, and maintain the perfect outdoor space for your property.

SUMMER CAMP TIPS
From the Camps Directors Themselves!
Here are some tips from Randy Elman, Artistic Director, Musical Theatre Conservatory, for choosing a summer theater camp/ program:
• Look for small classes and high teacher to student ratio.
• Students should be grouped by age as well as ability. An 8 yr. old and a 14 yr. old have different learning curves and social needs and behaviors!
• The program should be individualized to the needs of each child and the teachers should be aware of each child’s needs and goals for the summer.
• Beware of programs that promise too much or profess to put on a different full musical every 1 or 2 weeks. Even Broadway performers need more time than that to put together a musical!
• Make sure that every student is being taught by seasoned professionals who know how to teach as well as perform. To develop a strong foundation, it’s very important to have all students – especially beginnerstaught by experienced teachers.
• To maximize the benefits of summer camp, a program should be a balance between musical theater classes and performance opportunities.
• Every student should be given an opportunity to “shine” in the performance so that they each have a chance to try out the skills they have learned and enjoy the thrill of being on stage!
• Programs should also include fun classes and other group activities that are aimed at ensuring that a strong dose of fun and team spirit be injected into the program. It is a summer camp after all!
Theatre Camp provides kids with skills that they can use in the future in all aspects of their life. A class on how to audition not only helps to prepare students for a professional audition but also trains them how to best present themselves in an interview or when delivering a speech. Comedy/Improvisation classes help develop quick thinking skills. “Theatre for Life” is our motto, because we truly believe that musical theatre training can not only enhance but can also change the course of someone’s life.

When we spend time together at camp, there is always laughter, learning and growth. It’s something special to see children of all ages come together as one, look out for one another and enjoy each other’s company. We plan it this way as there is plenty of time in cabin and village units to bond and try activities together, and All-Camp events are the icing on the cake!
The YMCA Camp Mason community truly is where friends turn into family. And each one of us, campers and staff alike, take the things we learn and develop back into our communities, families and schools. Summer camp gives so much. Oh, and it’s a lot of fun too!

The theater classes we teach emphasize fun, supporting self-esteem and building confidence. We also highlight collaboration in our classes. Theater is one of the most collaborative of the performing arts, and learning that skill helps in every facet of life. When we collaborate in class, students learn how to give positive feedback, hear and appreciate ideas that may not have been their first choice, and give each person in the group a chance to contribute. Together, these things not only help bring the quiet student out of his or her shell, but also help the assertive student develop empathy and consideration for others. All while having a super-fun time!

The Future of 3D Orthodontics
LightForce Braces… Braces, But Better
Photos by Dan Epstein
LightForce braces are a relatively recent development in orthodontic treatment. The cutting-edge solution unites modern 3D printing technology with a fully digital treatment plan that provides a great experience and results. Dr. Eric Sacks of Sacks Orthodontics in Livingston answers questions about this new technology using 3D printing.
What are LightForce Braces?
LightForce braces are fully personalized 3D printed toothcolored brackets and are manufactured to precisely match the unique shape and orientation of the patients’ teeth, unlike traditional brackets which are mass-produced to fit everyone. The LightForce treatment plan is individually designed based on each patient’s unique tooth shape, jawline, and facial structure—offering a perfect fit—with an efficient, more discreet, and more comfortable treatment, from start to finish.
How do LightForce Braces differ from traditional braces?
Traditional braces use stock brackets and wires to apply force to the teeth. In contrast, LightForce offers the world’s only fully customized 3D printed braces that use low force, which can result in less discomfort, and improve the straightening accuracy with outcomes being achieved in a shorter treatment time. Their custom brackets also result in fewer emergency appointments.
How long does treatment with LightForce Braces typically take?
Because of the customization, the ideal outcome of treatment with LightForce is often achieved 6-9 months faster on average when compared to traditional braces. Because they are fully customized, the overall treatment time is expedited, and fewer office visits are required.
Who is a good candidate for LightForce Braces?
LightForce braces allows orthodontics to provide a custom fit for every patient, which means less discomfort, more effective straightening, and shorter treatments for both teens and adults. LightForce is the next generation of tooth straightening—it’s more efficient, more personalized, more esthetic, and more convenient than any other option on the market.
How can I find out if LightForce Braces are right for me?
The best way to determine if LightForce braces are the right treatment option for you is to schedule a consultation with an orthodontist. They will be able to evaluate your orthodontic needs and help you decide if these are the best choice for achieving your desired results.

Give the Gift of Life
April starts the season of renewal, and it is appropriately the official National Donate Life Month. Although there have been advances in medical technology, the demand for organ and tissue donation still vastly exceeds the number of donors.
• More than 110,000 people in the United States are awaiting a life-saving organ transplant.
• Nearly 4,000 New Jersey residents are on the transplant waiting list.
• Transplantable organs include: heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, pancreas and intestine.
• There is no age limit to donation and a national computer system matches donated organs to recipients.
• Your medical care will not be compromised because of your decision to donate.
• 17 people die waiting for an organ transplant each day.
• There is no cost to be an organ and tissue donor… donation is a gift.
At RWJBarnabas Health, patients have access to nationally recognized organ transplant and procurement programs for adults and children. With focuses in heart, lung, kidney, and pancreas transplantation, the RWJBarnabas Health teams utilize transplant techniques offered at only a few of the world’s leading transplant centers.
Each team is led by transplant physicians and transplant surgeons, who work closely with experienced, registered transplant coordinators, social workers, and support staff. Their programs offer hope and the gift of life to many who may once have been considered ineligible for transplant.
RWJBarnabas Health is a world-class leader in transplant research, clinical trials, anti-rejection medications and many other clinical advances that support patient care.

The Importance of Hands-Only CPR
More than 350,000 sudden cardiac arrests occur annually outside hospital settings. However, a handson emergency intervention like cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), especially if performed immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival.
“By equipping people with Hands-Only CPR training, we are empowering them to spring into action if a loved one needs help, as the majority of cardiac arrests occur at home,” said Dr. Anezi Uzendu, M.D., interventional cardiologist and American Heart Association volunteer.
As part of its Hands-Only CPR campaign, nationally supported by the Elevance Health Foundation, the American Heart Association aims to increase awareness about the importance of bystander CPR and offers these two simple steps:
1. Call 911.
2. Push hard and fast in the center of the chest of the individual experiencing cardiac arrest.
Using the beat of a familiar song with 100-120 beats per minute, such as “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees, can help you stay on pace with the necessary compressions.
FOOTCARE
At Cedar Grove Foot & Ankle Specialists, we provide innovative and compassionate care to get our patients back on their feet.

“Being able to efficiently perform Hands-Only CPR in the moment can mean the difference between life and death, and by following these two simple steps we can increase someone’s chance of survival from cardiac arrest,” said Shantanu Agrawal, M.D., board certified emergency medicine doctor and chief health officer at Elevance Health.

MY DENTURES
How Did I Get Here And What Do I Do?
By Rob Bagoff, photo by Dan Epstein
For many, loss of teeth is a genetic predisposition. Mom and/or dad lost their teeth and I’m now in the same boat. My gums get sore, they slip out when I am speaking, kissing is tough, eating is not as enjoyable as it used to be; what can I do?
Are you on the never ending search for the best denture adhesive or something to relieve a sore spot?
Do any of these issues plague you? When was the last time you had your denture evaluated by a dentist? Is it time for an upgrade? Did you ever discuss and get information about dental implants or a new denture? Can dental implants help hold the denture in place or completely replace the denture with a bridge that does not come out? Dentistry has come a long way; you deserve a second look and some more information. We may be able to help you in a number of ways.
Why not treat yourself to a consultation and educational experience? Not every case is simple; but at least have us look at your situation and offer a suggestion or two. And the best part, the $275.00 consultation fee is waived at the end of the consultation; it’s just there to hold your visit time. Act now, this offer expires on 5/31/2023.

Funded by the three founding families who were unhappy with the progress of research to slow, stop or reverse the disease, they started their own organization. Their mission is finding a cure; they hold no interest in patents or ownership of that cure. All who receive grants from them must share all information discovered.

SOLUTIONS FOR FOOT OR ANKLE PAIN
By Sue Baldani, photo by Dan Epstein
When experiencing foot or ankle pain, it’s best to consult with a specialist. “I’ve probably seen the problem multiple times and can come up with a treatment plan that best suits your individual needs,” says podiatrist
Dr. Matthew Wachtler of Cedar Grove Foot & Ankle.
Dr. Wachtler treats all age ranges and conditions, from small children with warts and growth plate issues and middle agers with tendonitis and sprains to the elderly suffering from arthritis, peripheral vascular disease, and neuropathy.
To try to prevent foot and ankle injuries from happening in the first place, Dr. Wachtler recommends wearing supportive shoes and even over-the-counter orthotics if you’re active and need more ongoing support. If tightness is a problem, it can aggravate medical issues such as arthritis, so a good stretching regimen before and after exercise is helpful. He also recommends taking it slow when getting into a new activity.
In December, the practice moved one suite over to a new and modern office. “My patients, my staff and I really enjoy coming into this beautiful facility,” says Dr. Wachtler.

Life Lessons From The Martial Arts
By Barry Farber
Martial arts has had a profound impact on my life in many ways. Not just keeping you in shape physically and mentally but instilling a discipline that overflows into all parts of your life. It has also helped me to connect to a spiritual side that has changed the way I look at life and obstacles on the path. After getting my black belt in taekwondo over 20 years ago I then went on to study Aikido and Jujitsu. Each art has its benefits that have a synergistic effect. But the circular movement in Aikido and Jujitsu is what captured my attention. A more efficient way to use your energy.
In my first martial art, Taekwondo, when you receive your black belt, you have to share how the martial arts has influenced your life. This was required to learn how people changed through the process. On a windy day with clear blue skies, I was standing in front of my 70-foot oak tree. I watched the dead leaves from winter still hanging on some limbs and blowing in the wind and this is what came to me over 20 years ago:
How The Martial Arts Has Influenced My Life…
Cold crisp leaves
Dancing in the sun…
Clear thoughts
Inspirational vision…
That is how the Martial Arts has influenced me.
The great oak with strength of root will break if it does not bend. Foundations too rigid will crack.
I have learned not to be blind on new paths. Strength does not guarantee the richness of flexibility. Through calmness one merges the two. Stillness leads to concentration of focus. Opening the mind.
It is then you see the potential of one’s life. That is what Martial Arts has taught me. But I must not forget that all learning must be accompanied by action.
Constant learning… Constant action…
Both are equal… Both are necessary…
We learn from our actions… We act from our learning…
One without the other suffers…
Both together provide depth and clarity in truth.
you know.
