“SHE SAVED MY LIFE”
Cedar Grove resident Danielle R. had been experiencing the painful side effects of Peripheral Neuropathy, “my feet and legs were excruciating, and my doctor told me there was nothing they could do, they said I would have to take Gabapentin for the rest of my life.” Then she met Montclair’s very own Licensed Acupuncturist, and Board Certified Herbalist, Aleksandra Mihajlovic, L.Ac. Peripheral Neuropathy is the pain, discomfort, and numbness caused by nerve damage of the peripheral nervous system. Danielle explainedthat daily tasks like opening doors and using the bathroom were overwhelmingly painful. “How can you live for the next 30 years when you don’t even want to get out of bed to do simple things?” She was experiencing the burning, numbness, tingling, and sharp pains that those suffering from Neuropathy often describe. “The way that I would describe it, it’s equivalent to walking on glass.” Danielle hadn’t worn socks in five years and was wearing shoes two sizes too big so that nothing would ‘touch’ her feet. Unfortunately, Danielle’s story is all too familiar for the over 3 million people in the U.S. suffering from Peripheral Neuropathy. Are you unfortunate enough to be facing the same disheartening prognosis? You’re not sleeping at night because of the burning in your feet, and you have difficulty walking, shopping, or doing any activity for more than 30 minutes because of the pain. Maybe you’re struggling with balance and living in fear that you might fall. Your doctor told you to ‘just live with the pain,’ and you’re taking medications that aren’t working or have uncomfortable side effects. Fortunately, four months ago, Danielle read an article about Licensed Acupuncturist Aleksandra Mihajlovic and her work to treat those suffering from Peripheral Neuropathy without invasive surgeries or medications.
Aleksandra, founder of Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine in Montclair, uses the time-tested science of Acupuncture and technology initially developedby NASA that assists in increasing blood flow expediting recovery and healing to treat this debilitating disease. “Now, when I go to bed at night, I don’t have those shooting pains. I don’t have that burning sensation. I don’t have pain coming up my legs,” Danielle enthusiastically describes life after receiving Aleksandra Mihajlovic, L.Ac.’s treatments. “I can wear socks and shoes!”
It’s time you let your golden years BE GOLDEN! Aleksandra Mihajlovic, L.Ac., is now accepting new patients but only for a limited time. To protect her patients, both current and future, she has made the difficult decision to limit the number of patients seen in her clinic. We will accept only 20 new neuropathy patients before the end of the year, so call (973) 444-8932 now to schedule a consultation.
Danielle and her sister now operate a successful dog walking business, sometimes walking up to 5 miles a day. “It’s life-altering. As far as I’m concerned, Aleksandra saved my life!” Aleksandra Mihajlovic, L.Ac., has been helping the senior community for over 10 years using the most cutting-edge and innovative integrative medicine. Specializing in chronic pain cases, specifically those deemed ‘hopeless’ or ‘untreatable,’ she consistently generates unparalleled results. What was once a missing link in senior healthcare is now easily accessible to the residents of Northern NJ. If you’ve missed too many tee times because of pain, or you’ve passed on dancing, or even a simple walk in the park because you’re afraid of falling, it’s time to call Aleksandra Mihajlovic and the staff at Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine.

Discover Birdwatching This Summer! A Dinosaur Hike in August
H
ave you been to the Walter Kiddie Dinosaur Park Field in Roseland? If not, your family with children ages 7 and above, may enjoy participating in a planned 1.5-mile hike to explore this national historic landmark that is home to threetoed Grallator dinosaur tracks from the late Triassic age. Walter Kiddie is one of the major sites in United States where a large number of dinosaur tracks are preserved. Grallator footprints are characteristically three-toed (tridactyl) and range from 10 to 20 centimeters (or 4 to 8 inches) long. Using clay, guests will make and take home an impression of an existing track and leave the site undisturbed for future paleontological study. The tour, which will meet at the end of Locust Avenue in Roseland, is on Tuesday, August 17 from 5:15- 7:15pm. Advanced registration is required by calling 973.228.8776.

Student’s Pandemic Chess Tournament Supports Toni’s Kitchen and Local Businesses By Jackie Schatell
C
harles Moroze is a service-minded freshman, soon-to-be sophomore, at Montclair High School. He also loves playing chess. During the pandemic, Charles began thinking about how he could help others and bring people together online. He decided to host an online chess tournament called the “MTC Chess Tournament Fundraiser,” which raised and donated a little over $1000, to Toni’s Kitchen Food Pantry. The money raised came through $10 entry forms, Charles’ $.10 per game donation commitment, and the sale of tournament t-shirts designed by Charles. “We were all so isolated during the pandemic and I thought a chess tournament between past and present MHS students would help keep people busy and in contact during a hard time,” says Charles. According to Charles, over 20 participants, ages 19 and below, played 150 games during the tournament, which ended with three finalists including a champion. The first, second and third place winners received tournament t-shirts with one saying “Champion” and the other two saying “Finalist.” The winner also received $50 worth of gift cards to local businesses, which Charles purchased. “I gave the gift cards as a prize because I wanted to support local businesses as well as Toni’s,” says Charles. When he made the in-person donation to Toni’s, Charles received a tour of the facility. “I feel really good about the fundraiser because it made a beneficial impact, and I enjoyed seeing that impact first-hand via the private tour,” he says. Charles says he enjoyed hosting the event and plans to host another fundraiser in the future.

COMMUNITY RALLIES SPIRIT of One of Its Own During Pandemic
By Jackie Schatell
O
n the way to buy flowers for his wife Anne, who was recovering at home from her fourth bout of chemo for stage 1 breast cancer, Jeff Fischman, of West Orange, suddenly got an idea to create a get-well card on his eight-car driveway. At the store, he purchased $25 worth of chalk. He then made a post on the West Orange Buy Nothing Group Facebook page asking if anyone wanted to stop by and sign the “big card.” To Jeff’s surprise, over 50 people and families came by, many that he did not know personally. Some people brought their own handmade cards, and flowers. In addition, Sunny Sentiments stopped by to put up a complimentary lawn sign too.
Anne and Jeff Fischman “I was surprised at the outpouring of support,” says Jeff. “I had hoped that perhaps 5-10 people might join in, but I never expected 50.” Jeff says Anne had been very tired all week and he wanted to do something nice for her. Due to COVID and her weakened immune system, Anne could not have visitors and was feeling down. Jeff’s goal was to put a smile on Anne’s face, and he succeeded! The couple’s bedroom overlooks the driveway, which is why Jeff chose the area for the card. Anne says, “I was overwhelmed when Jeff opened the shade. First, I thought he had done it himself, which would have been amazing. But then, he pointed out that all those people came out in support and I just lost it. What an amazing community!” “It is remarkable that in a time of pandemic, so many people opened up their hearts to Anne,” says Jeff. There are so many heroes in this story.”

Sandwiches Galore
W
e have a friend whose son, when coming home to visit, insists his first stop after the airport is the Millburn Deli. It’s not surprising: they are all about sandwiches. First you need to decide whether you’re in the mood for Chicken Cutlets, Grilled Chicken,Beef, Ham, Turkey, a Sloppy Joe, or something Vegetarian. In each category, there are a host of different combinations, on a variety of different breads such as Rosemary Focaccia, Ciabatta, French Bread, a sub, a wrap, a Kaiser Roll, and of course, white and rye. Should you be off bread, salad choices abound. The menu is truly vast, and if you’re like us, you’ll struggle to narrow down your choice because so many of their creative ingredient fusions will tempt you. Note that it may be really crowded inside when you get there. Don’t panic, the team works like a well-oiled machine and keeps it moving. One caveat: there are so many terrific options, you may find yourself coming back again and again.

A Longtime Favorite Continues to Please
T
ucked away on High Street in Orange is an Essex County treasure. The Star Tavern was the first place we ever had a thin crust pizza decades ago, and we keep going back. The pies continue to be some of the best available of this genre. If you’re feeling adventurous, try going beyond a traditional plain pie; a host of unusual varieties are available: Whole Wheat, Eggplant, Red Spinach, Clam, Portobello Mushroom, Pesto, even an Apple Pizza that’s more of a dessert choice. Of course you’ll find a good selection of traditional tavern fare appetizers, salads and sandwiches. We were dining here for years, automatically ordering a couple of different pies before we realized that in addition to the pasta entrees you expect from a pizza-centric kitchen a few house specialties are worth noting such as Shrimp Portobello served over linguine pictured here. If the past months have kept you at home for too long, or in the improbable possibility you’ve never been… it’s time for a visit to this venerable Essex County destination.

What’s Your Wealth Potential?
f you haven’t guessed, July is National Ice Cream Month. It’s a perfect time to cool off with a scoop of your favorite flavor. Like with other foods, the exact origin of ice cream is unknown. What we do know, however, is the origin of ice cream likely dates back to A.D. 54 to 68 during the time when Nero was Emperor of Rome. Evidence shows harvesting ice or snow, then flavoring it with honey or other flavorings to make ice cream. Alexander the Great supposedly enjoyed icy drinks that had flavorings such as honey or nectar, too!
Best known for guiding his clients through their financial journey with patience and care, Dan connects with each individual on a personal level, always keeping their best interest at the heart of his work.
The first appearance of ice cream in the U.S. is found in a letter by Maryland Governor William Bladen in 1744. Early presidents also had a liking towards ice cream. In fact, in the summer of 1790, George Washington spent approximately $200 for ice cream. For a while, ice cream was only an occasional special treat, mainly for the rich.

In 1843, Nancy Johnson patented the hand crank ice cream maker. Eight years later, in 1851, Jacob Fussell built the first ice cream factory. The invention of mechanical refrigeration helped keep large amounts of ice cream cool. Further improvements and new inventions in technology made ice cream more available to the general public.
ICE CREAM FUN FACTS • Vanilla is the most popular flavor of ice cream. • It takes roughly 50 licks to finish an ice cream cone. • The ice cream soda was invented in 1874. • California produces the most ice cream in the United States.

discerning eye, attention to detail and more than 25 years in business makes ANS Antiques unique. Owner Sam Guidan ensures that buyers receive accurate information about each item and sellers an honest appraisal of their valuables. Antique is defined as anything more than 100 years old. Guidan buys furniture; jewelry; silver; watches and clocks; coins and medals, and antique and modern art.
“The price I offer to sellers is usually higher than other dealers.” – Sam Guidan, owner, ANS Antiques The key to ANS’ success is the meticulous research Guidan conducts to evaluate each item. Auction records, magazine articles and talking to other dealers adds to Guidan’s knowledge of the antique market.
Guidan says, “Mid-century furniture is in vogue; however, 19th century furniture is not.” He is happy to introduce watch collectors to timepieces manufactured by smaller companies that are valuable, but not as known. Coins continue to be popular and their worth is based on their condition.

“The price I offer to sellers is usually higher than other dealers,” says Guidan. He notes that the antique market is a cyclical one. “Eventually everything changes.”

Cheesecake and Then Some
Y
ou’d think the name says it all: cheesecake. And it’s true that the online menu of this Suburban Essex Readers Poll winner lists 36 different varieties. So if a traditional New York Style isn’t your thing, perhaps something more exotic like Ferrero Rocher, a classic New York Cheesecake with chocolate hazelnut ganache and topped with Ferrero Rocher chocolates; Italian Ricotta made with ricotta cheese and orange zest; or Rice Pudding Cheesecake, featuring fresh-made rice pudding, New York Cheesecake with a cinnamon swirl. Don’t be fooled by the name. Anthony’s also has respectable lunch and dinner menus, and even offers a weekend brunch on Saturday and Sunday. Dinner offerings range from a Brisket & Short Rib Bacon Cheddar Burger; Cauliflower Crust Pizza With Roasted Vegetables, Pesto, and Pecorino Romano; to a Crisp Buttermilk Chicken and Waffles which is buttermilk soaked Chicken with crisp bacon, melted cheese, roasted pears and a drizzle of maple syrup, and served with a pasta salad. At brunch you’ll probably be delighted with the Apple Fritter French Toast, or Banana Bread French Toast, but we think about the Soft Shell Crab BLT. Variety and creativity abound at Anthony’s, although we’ll always be more than pleased with a Strawberry Cheesecake, which is what first brought us in and keeps us coming back. Check the website for their schedule.

BENEFITS OF
Pathway and Driveway Lighting
P
erhaps you’ve considered installing lighting to enhance the drive to the door of your home—or the paths that cross the lawn surrounding your property. But are you left wondering what kind of value it will add? There are many benefits of pathway and driveway lighting. They affect the look of your home, the safety of your property, and how you use your landscape.
Lighting with Style Coming home at night should be a welcoming experience. Natural and architectural features take on a different type of dramatic beauty when the sun disappears. 24
Suburban Essex
Showcasing the best features of your house enhances its architectural design and value. Few features make a home feel upscale like outdoor lighting. Today’s lighting options have gone beyond practical or invasive, to decorative and tasteful. Bollards are considered by many to be the superior choice of lighting residential properties. These lights have a 360-degree scope which illuminates not only paths but garden beds and other features of the landscape. They are a functional and highly attractive modern choice for either pathway or driveway lighting. They offer depth to any design with the shadow patterns they create. Summer 2021
Bollards come in all different sizes and patterns and can be custom designed to match the decor of your home.
Lighting for Safety Guests that come to your home should find it easy to navigate the way to your door. And taking a stroll in your garden in the evening should be a pleasurable experience. But the risk of injury for you and guests is great if entrances and paths aren’t marked. Low voltage and LED landscape lighting will keep your utility bills low while making your yard a warm and inviting place.
In addition to navigating your landscape safely, outdoor lighting affords your property security from unwanted intruders.
Lighting to Extend Use The best landscape designs extend your home outside. They increase your usable space for outdoor entertaining and relaxing. But you shouldn’t have to come in when the sun goes down. Incorporate lighting into your outdoor living design to make your space useable at any time of day. At Sponzilli Landscape Group, we pride ourselves on providing superior quality and service. We support your choice of outdoor lighting not only at installation but also with maintenance. With over 50 years of experience, our team can help you illuminate your landscape with beauty.

Senior Naturalist, Essex County Environmental Center, County of Essex, Department Of Parks
DAVID ALEXANDER By Jackie Schatell
T
he Essex County Environmental Center is a little- known gem situated right here in Essex County. The person responsible for all of the terrific programming is David Alexander, Senior Naturalist, Essex County Environmental Center, County of Essex, Department of Parks. This month, we sat down with David to learn more about his being a naturalist, the department and services it offers, as well as about current and future programming.
What is a naturalist? Someone who is always exploring and learning about the natural world and gets to share their enthusiasm for it with program participants of all ages.
What made you choose the field? Interacting with nature always provided me with rich sensory experiences and my interest in tourism and travel all led to a love of parks. It has been a source of pride to work in the same park system for 17 years that I grew up playing in.
What do you like best about it? The work is always fresh as we offer educational programming opportunities that follow the seasons. I get to take what I’m enthusiastic about and turn it into engaging programing with the
public that hopefully results in joy but also encourages a stewardship ethic and empowers others to take action to make better choices for our environment.
What is a project you are working on that is close to your heart? I’ve been working with scouts and community groups to help create, cleanup, and promote better access to the Passaic River within Essex County’s West Essex Park. It is an impressively beautiful river in places and offers wonderful opportunities to canoe, kayak, bird watch, fish and just get out and enjoy local nature close to home.
What types of paddlesport trips do you offer? The Upper Passaic River offers wonderful opportunities for recreation within easy access of millions of New Jersey residents. Participants can join us at the Essex County Environmental Center on scheduled guided canoe trips or paddle with their own boats by entering the river at available public access points. The Essex County Environmental Center only offers scheduled public and private group trips.

In August we’ll have a Buzzfest and learn about how honey goes from the hive to a jar, current challenges bees face and what we can do to help these important pollinators. We also offer Frog Pond Science as a class and field trip offering, Family Frog Pond Visits, Frog Pond Club, and Hop, Walk, slither Summer Camp as well as other summer camp activities.
Do you have plans for any fall paddlesport trips, if so, please share the details?
What is something people may not know about your department of will find surprising?
We’ll be continuing to host public and private group Passaic River canoe trips from our access point behind the environmental center. Programs are posted on our website, Facebook and emailed out to those on our mailing list. Group leaders can call to schedule their own private programs.
The Environmental Center is an environmentally friendly building with a green roof that attracts pollinators, recycled rubber shingles, rain garden, rain barrels, recycled plastic decking, recycled glass tiles in bathrooms, it is built on stilts to reduce impact on the surrounding wetland and offers access to some short family friendly trails that visit a frog pond, beehives, the Passaic River, a Lenape Learning Area, Bird Lane trail and more.
What else do you offer at the Essex County Environmental Center?

In July we’ll have our Butterfly Tent Safari programming that allows close interactions with butterflies as you feed them on a foam brush dipped in Gatorade within a tent filled with native host and nectar plants. The program will entertain but also educate about how we can all be better neighbors for biodiversity by providing the right plants to act as a banquet for butterflies.

Paddlesports
Great for Fitness, Socializing and Communing with Nature By Jackie Schatell
K
ayaking and other types of paddlesports are on an uptick this year. In fact, paddlesports are now considered to be one of the fastestgrowing sports in the country. If you are looking for new ways to get fit, are seeking ways to commune with nature, or spend time with family and friends, then paddlesports might be for you. These types of activities are gaining in popularity for many reasons
including accessibility, affordability, and approachability. Most people live within 15 miles of a body of water, making it an accessible hobby. “Wonderful opportunities exist to immerse yourself in nature just minutes from home,” says Senior Naturalist, Essex County Environmental Center, County of Essex, Department of Parks, David Alexander.
There are several locations allowing paddlers to put their kayak, canoe and stand-up paddleboat in the water or to rent them. And for those just looking to get a feel for being on the water, paddleboats can be rented at the Essex County Parks Boat Pavilion in West Orange and at Verona Park in Verona. During the past year, where spending time outdoors became the new normal, more people have begun enjoying paddlesports such as: canoeing, kayaking, and standup paddleboarding. You can modify paddlesports for recreational and social fun, and for those wishing to increase intensity, start a competition or pick harder courses to paddle. Getting started is easy. You do not have to go out and buy expensive gear, need a license or register your own kayak or canoe. You can find a place nearby offering lessons with certified instructors. A great option is to also sign up for a guided tour. If you decide to try it on your own, research the depth of the water, the winds, tides, and what is below. You should also tell someone where you are going and when you will be back.

Boat House Row— The Yacht Rock Experience
David Clark’s Songs in the Attic Featuring the Music of Billy Joel
Yacht rock refers to the highly polished brand of soft rock that emanated from Southern California between 1976 and 1984. The term is meant to suggest the kind of smooth, mellow music that early yuppies likely enjoyed while sipping champagne on their yachts.
Clark continues to gain notoriety with stunningly accurate piano playing, lead vocals, and an eerily similar stage look to the Piano Man himself while engaging the audience with wit and humor.

Family Law Attorney Helps Clients Divorce Without Court The Art of Mediation and Arbitration By Cynthia Burns
T
anya Freeman, an attorney and Chair of the Family Law Department at Weiner Law Group LLP, believes in the benefits of keeping divorcing couples out of court. She is a proponent of mediation or arbitration to reach a settlement in many cases, either before or after the complaint for divorce is filed. What Freeman seeks Tanya Freeman is to handle the entire proceedings through mediation or arbitration. A primer: with mediation the parties work with a qualified mediator who facilitates reaching a settlement. The results are non-binding. With arbitration, the parties may decide to allow the arbitrator to serve as the decision maker and the proceedings unfold much like a trial. The arbitrator makes a decision that the parties can accept or reject. Freeman explains another benefit of arbitration is the ability to select dates in closer succession than if you were in Court. Freeman explains, “it is emotionally charged, but you’re in control of the calendar.”

“There are many benefits to mediation,” says Freeman, who is also a mediator. “You determine your destination. It is a way to test the flexibility of a settlement proposal. It’s cost efficient and provides more time to discuss financial and custody issues.” She describes mediation as shuttle diplomacy. “You can caucus, meaning go back and forth between the parties and their attorneys with suggestions and counteroffers.” When mediation or arbitration are successful, the settlement agreement is fully executed and the parties can proceed with an uncontested divorce. During COVID-19 the court system adopted divorce by affidavit. Questions a judge would ask at the final hearing for divorce may now be provided by way of an Affidavit. According to Freeman, this process allows couples to finalize their divorce without taking additional time to appear in court. or some, soaring home values and stock market wins have meant more equity and more wealth to invest. For others, pandemic job loss, illness or divorce has dramatically affected their income. In either case, now’s the time to get help revising financial planning, said Dan Fitzgerald, financial advisor with Murnick Financial Group. “We sit down and find out what their situation is and what they are trying to achieve, whether it’s putting their assets to work for them generating income, rebalancing their portfolio, paying off high-interest credit cards, re-planning retirement or saving for college,” he said. He advises clients at many income levels, and notes that everyone can benefit from sound financial advice.

Robert Genovese
A SoHo Inspired Gallery By Dan Epstein
N
estled in Watchung Plaza in Montclair is Local Coffee, a jewel of a shop wherein carefully curated food and beverage products from the tri-state are to be found. And while there’s generally always a few people waiting to order at this wonderful independent coffee bar, it’s the art gallery housed in it that first brought us there. The beating heart of the establishment is Robert Genovese whose family owned the well-known Miladys bar in the heart of New York’s Greenwich Village for decades. Coming of age in the hospitality industry, indeed in a neighborhood establishment, drew the outline for his life goals. Growing up in SoHo, his childhood friends were the children of locallybased artists. Surrounded by artists and
the local Art world provided the color that enriched that outline. He says the relationship between the Italian neighbors and the SoHo artists sharing the same community is responsible for what he and his wife Adele have created in Montclair: a coffee shop with a neighborhood feeling that houses a very real art gallery. Every month for the five years the doors have been open, Genovese makes the gallery available to a different artist. It’s a well designed, thoughtful space just perfect for looking at art. He does it for the pleasure he derives from becoming acquainted with the artists, and likewise the knowledge that he’s supplying a steady stream of eyes on each of the gallery’s exhibits while offering commission-free sales to the artists, Summer 2021
as well as space to host a reception to celebrate the artists and their work. In addition, he maintains a blog which highlights all of the past exhibiting artists and features a selection of their work. Whether you’re from the local neighborhood, or from the other end of the county, it’s worth the trip. Thanks to Robert Genovese, emerging artists, whose work deserves a look, have a legitimate venue for their work in this terrific gallery, where you can also get a great cup of coffee. The hours vary so it’s best to check them online or call ahead.

Child Tax Credit for 2021 By Michael H. Karu, CPA/CFF
S
everal years ago, sweeping tax law changes were enacted. Among them was the elimination of personal exemptions and the addition of a new Child Tax Credit, (CTC). For calendar year 2021, that credit has not only increased, but has provisions for eligible taxpayers to receive early payments from the IRS of 50% of the 2021 estimated CTC, if the IRS has processed either your 2020 or 2019 tax returns. For eligible taxpayers, these advance payments will begin after July 15th and will continue through December 2021 on a monthly basis. You have the right not to receive the advance payments. There should be a portal on the IRS website to unenroll. The CTC has increased from $2,000 per child to $3,600 per child ages 5 and under as of December 31, 2021 or $3,000 per child ages 6 through 17. However, there are two phase outs of the credit. The first is triggered if your Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) in 2021 exceeds $150,000 for Married Filing Jointly taxpayers, $112,500 if filing as Head of Household, or $75,000 if Single or Married Filing Separately. The CTC is reduced by $50 for every $1,000 (or fraction thereof) by which your MAGI exceeds the above limits. The second phase out begins when your
MAGI exceeds $400,000 for joint filers or $200,000 for everyone else. Again, it is a reduction of $50 per $1,000 by which your MAGI exceeds the thresholds. While the CTC is not taxable, there are ramifications. Accepting the advance payments will reduce any potential refund by that amount. While the advance payments are not taxable, if, based on your 2021 income tax return, you are not eligible for the total of the Advance CTC, you may have to repay all or part of it. Remember, the IRS giveth and the IRS taketh away. Michael H. Karu, CPA/CFF, is a senior member of Levine, Jacobs & Company, LLC, a Livingston-based accounting and consulting firm. What Can LOCAL HONEY Do For You? Honey Can Counter Pollen Allergies Raw honey contains pollen, collected by local bees from the very flowers that cause you to suffer. When you consume that honey you are also ingesting the same offending pollen, which may take you less sensitive to this pollen over time. Think of it as a tasty allergy shot.
Honey is a Natural Energy Source Comprised of approximately 80 percent sugar, 18 percent water and 2 percent minerals, vitamins, pollen and protein, it is not surprising that honey has been called “the perfect running fuel.” It was actually used in ancient Greece by runners in the Olympic Games.
Honey is an Antioxidant Powerhouse Studies have shown that a daily dose of honey can boost your immune system by raising antioxidant levels. It contains polyphenols, which have been shown to reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease.
Honey Can Help with Dandruff Apply a diluted solution of honey and water to the scalp, leave it on for a few hours and it should help with dandruff and scalp itch, due to its anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.
Honey Can Kick Start Your Libido Honey is a natural aphrodisiac, helping men produce more testosterone and women with estrogen levels. The Vikings, Greeks and Chinese believed that honey and fertility were linked.

Is Your Life in Balance? Daily Healthy Habits to Consider
E
very so often, it’s important to take stock of your routine and make improvements where necessary.
Find Time to Decompress • If you’re a morning person, get out of bed 30 minutes earlier than normal to wake up with your favorite coffee or tea and think about what you need to accomplish for the day. • More of a night owl? Spend at least 30 minutes before going to sleep to unplug from technology and relax with a new book you’ve had on your list to read. • Schedule time for exercise to reduce stress and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Planning workouts ahead of time will make you more likely to stick to them.
Write Everything Down • Handwritten notes and to-do lists will reinforce your memory of the tasks you need to conquer. They also give you the option to look at what you need to do for the day and prioritize the list. Consider a personal planner. • Documenting your day not only keeps you organized, but also provides you with an opportunity to look back and reflect on your life’s accomplishments, memories and milestones from the year.
Balanced Diet, Balanced Life • Maintaining a healthy, balanced diet will help you feel great, and can increase your focus, energy levels and productivity. • Plan out your meals ahead of time before going shopping by marking

them in a calendar. This will give you more time during the week to cook and prepare meals, without having to make frequent trips to the store or feel tempted to grab take-out. You’ll be more likely to stick with the habit if you love the calendar you use. • Cooking your own fresh meals can help keep your bank account balanced, and is often much healthier than food from a restaurant. Warm Weather Wellness Tips to Promote Health and Well-Being This Summer
D
uring the warmer months, there’s often a great deal of shuffling and movement, including common allergy triggers like trees, pollen, mold spores, dust and dander along with pesky sinus pressure. While more commonly associated with other seasons, summer allergies can be one big pain—literally. Take steps this summer to ease the impact of sinus and allergy problems and focus on your overall wellness with these tips:
Control Your Allergy and Sinus Triggers Knowing what flares your allergic reactions can help prevent discomfort. For many people, monitoring pollen counts and limiting time outdoors on high-pollen days can help reduce reactions. You might also avoid hanging laundry outside, as pollen can stick to clothes and sheets as they dry, and ask for help with yardwork to limit your exposure.
Find Some Pressure Release When nasal congestion or sinus pressure build, it can feel like a ton of bricks have landed on your head. However, you can find relief with products designed to help clear up your stuffy nose, relieve headaches and thin and loosen excess mucus.
Manage Your Indoor Climate. Even when you start spending more time outdoors, it’s important to keep close tabs on the quality of the air inside your home. If you’re prone to allergy flare-ups or sinus infections, manage the humidity level by using a humidifier or dehumidifier. If outdoor allergens are a concern, avoid opening windows and doors, and instead rely on air conditioning on warmer days. Also be sure to change filters regularly and use an air purifier for added protection.

Pile on Fresh Produce.
Keep Fluids Flowing
After spending cooler months consuming comfort foods and fewer fresh veggies, warmer temperatures usher in a new menu of opportunity. Take advantage of all the garden-rich options and fuel your body with vitamin- and nutrient-rich produce that fills farmers markets, grocery stores and even roadside stands.
More time outdoors in warmer weather can quickly lead to dehydration, especially if you’re working up a sweat. Drink plenty of water to stay well hydrated and keep your body operating in top shape. Staying hydrated can also help keep mucus moving, allowing you to ease through allergy or sinus problems.
Soak Up the Sun—Responsibly
Update Your Medicine Cabinet
Summer typically provides plenty of opportunities to spend some time soaking up the sun’s rays. Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that affects numerous body systems, including the immune system and bone health. It’s also been shown to improve your mood and reduce depression, so take in plenty of fresh air and sparkling sunlight. Just remember to slather on plenty of sunscreen to protect your skin from harmful UV rays and don’t forget to protect your eyes with UV-blocking sunglasses.
Take stock of your medical supplies and medications periodically to ensure you have what you need for the season ahead. Discard any expired prescriptions or over the counter medicines and be sure restock common summer essentials like bug bite ointments, sunburn spray and multi-symptom products like Mucinex Sinus-Max to help temporarily relieve sinus and congestion symptoms in one dose. Also be sure to replenish your first aid kit with plenty of bandages and wound care supplies. For more information, visit Mucinex.com. —Family Features

hat does that saying really mean? It’s been a saying that I remember from my past experience in the martial arts and the research of martial arts masters. Does that mean I don’t desire nice things? That I don’t want success? That I don’t reach out and grab opportunities or set goals? Not really. I still do. But when so many of the martial arts masters from the past talked about this “effortless effort” and “detachment” it intrigued me. There is a fine line between the study of Zen and what we call achievement and success. To achieve something great you need to have a hunger, desire, tenacity and go after it with all your might. But that’s contradictory to what Zen emphasizes. The dictionary definition of Zen: An approach to an activity, skill, or subject that emphasizes simplicity and intuition rather than conventional thinking or fixation on goals. Does achievement without effort mean you don’t work hard? Not at all. It’s actually a detachment from the desire of caring too much about winning or caring too much about not winning—and that’s where it gets difficult to put your arms around. It is pure action with body and mind as one. Too much caring and desire
“Take no thought of who is right or wrong, or who is better than. Be not for or against.” —Bruce Lee
for winning will get in the way of the performance. There is a saying I have talked about in past columns, called Mushin, which means “no mind” or action without thinking. Yogi Berra said it best, “How can anybody hit and think at the same time”. Actions are pure and come naturally without thought. But the real key is detachment. Not to think and just do. Your body and mind are together and there are no thoughts disrupting the action. Because when you do not care you can be at ease. One of my favorite books on this subject is “Zen in the Martial Arts,” by Joe Hyams. He tells a story about when he was training with his sensei who told him to hit a baseball mitt that was kept perfectly still. As soon as Joe got ready to punch he tensed up and his sensei was aware of his intention and he moved the mitt before Joe could strike it. “Relax,” he said. “Stop straining. The less effort, the faster and more powerful you will be.” As soon as Joe relaxed his body and mind, he hit the target. His sensei told him, “You stopped caring whether you hit the mitt or not. It is the caring or desire which stands in the way of effortless effort. You must stop caring about doing it and just do it—effortlessly and naturally as snow falls from the tree or water bubbles up from the spring.” Barry Farber is a best-selling author, an award winning radio and television host as well as an agent and marketing consultant for corporations, professional athletes, and entertainers. He’s also the creator and marketer of the FoldzFlat® Pens. Learn more at www.barryfarber.com. @ barryfarberoffical
