Letter from the Mayor Dear Reader, Once again, Livingston’s new institution, Inside Livingston, is filled with great information about businesses in our area. The backbone of our local economy is our local businesses and Livingston residents know how important it is to show their support. Money we spend in town supports our neighbors and helps to attract even more exciting shops and services. And its been working! There are many new business ribbon cuttings scheduled through to the end of the year. Businesses want to be in Livingston. Big things are happening in town. The new Shoppes at Livingston Circle is opening and include newcomers Blaze Pizza, The Container Store and a little hamburger shop called Shake Shack that you may have heard about (wink, wink). We have the dedication of the Saint Barnabas Medical Center Community Field in October as well the opening of the massive and ultra-modern Cooperman Family Pavilion at Saint Barnabas.

Mayor Shawn Klein

All of that, and a new Livingston smart phone app will be coming out soon which will help our residents communicate easily with ourTown government. Residents will be able to easily find out about town news and events, report problems and even find out when their trash and recycling is scheduled next. As we all know, when you have a town with great schools, wonderful neighborhoods and access to so much else, it’s no wonder that Livingston is where people want to live and where their children come back to. Welcome home, Shawn R. Klein

ASK THE EXPERTS How important is seasonal maintenance for heating and cooling systems?

Why should I convert from oil to gas?

Seasonal maintenance will protect your system and provide efficient performance, resulting in optimum home comfort. It can catch small problems before they turn into larger, more costly issues and can prevent a serious “in season” breakdown. A maintenance plan also extends the life of your equipment, increases cost effectiveness and ensures safe operation.

Natural gas is an efficient, safe and a reliable fuel source, costs less than oil, and is one of the cleanest-burning fuels available. Converting will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality in your home, and you will reap the benefits of using the cleanest and least expensive method of home heating. If natural gas is available, we will be your liaison to the provider and oversee the entire project.

My heat/air is not working, what do I do?

Why should I hire a licensed plumber?

First check if your circuit breaker and emergency switch are in the “on” position. Also, make sure your thermostat is set to the proper function (heat or cool) and that the temperature setting is correct. If these don’t correct the problem, call Air Group and we’ll take it from there. We provide service during normal business hours and after hour emergency service.

If my system needs replacement, what next?

In an emergency, our sales team will immediately provide equipment options; different efficiency and price levels. For “no heat” emergencies, we will provide temporary electric heaters until your installation is completed. If your system is antiquated or recently problematic, be proactive and take advantage of our off-season discounts. The work will be done at your convenience and you’ll be ready for the upcoming season.

800.545.1020

It’s your home, protect it! Licensed plumbers are tested rigorously with local and state guidelines, and are bonded and insured. Don’t put your health and home at risk by hiring an unlicensed plumber—it’s against the law! We offer a full range of plumbing services, from unclogging toilets, repairing pipes, to completely new plumbing for your home. Air Group can help with all your plumbing needs.

Does Air Group handle all electrical projects?

Of course! From constant tripped breakers, installing smart home products, energy efficient lighting, whole house generators and providing electrical home safety checks, Air Group will handle all your electrical needs.

Creating a Community for Those with Diabetes

T

wo Livingston moms are creating a community for those living with diabetes so that no child or adult ever feels alone on their diabetic journey. Stephanie Meininger and Hallie Dennis’ organization, The Diabetes Resource Network (The D Network), aims to provide support and resources to diabetics of all ages. In 2010, Stephanie’s then 4-year-old daughter, Sophia, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). Sophia’s family did all they could to normalize their new life however, emotionally, Sophia at times felt alone in her disease. Through her daughter’s journey Stephanie states, “I saw what was missing for Sophia as a T1D and for me as her mother, so I was inspired to fill that gap with the Diabetes Resource Network.” The organization’s mission was furthered in 2016 when Hallie’s daughter and Sophia’s oldest friend Dylan was diagnosed with the same disease. Notes Hallie, “I realized how fortunate both Dylan and I were to have Sophia and Stephanie to turn to for support. Most diabetics upon diagnosis don’t have a close friend to turn to and that just further motivated me to help others.” The D Network’s mission is to offer support, insight, information, and education through a variety of programs, products, and a mobile app that cater to all that are affected by diabetes—including family members. These programs will help normalize lives upon diagnosis and train family members to care for diabetic members. And as inspired by Sophia and Dylan, The D Network creates a community where those living with diabetes can connect with each other for support.

Stephanie Meininger and Hallie Dennis

“We are excited to start helping diabetics gain the support, supplies and resources they need” said Stephanie Meininger, CEO. “We were thrilled with our attendance of over 500 participants at our kick off event this Labor Day for our Color Run 5K Run/Walk” said Co-CEO Hallie Dennis. he mother/daughter team of Nancy Dudas and Cheryl Panes believe a fun shopping experience can lift your mood—and you’ll look fabulous. “People feel welcome and at home here,” says Nancy. “Whether you’re a longtime customer or brand new to the store, we want you to enjoy yourself. We don’t care if you’re buying a small gift for a friend, a whole new wardrobe, or just browsing. This is not the kind of store people are afraid to walk into.” After 30 years in Livingston, Nancy and Cheryl are part of the neighborhood, which they love. “We’re not pushy salespeople,” says Nancy. “But we engage customers, can suggest pieces that would look good on them, and give them as much attention as they want.” In the Pink caters to a range of ages and sizes. Nancy, at 38, and Cheryl, at 70, understand the preferences of a wide group of people, and the store carries sizes from small to XXL, plus a number of one-size-fits-all garments. Major lines

hen someone comes in looking for glasses or sunglasses frames, “we listen to exactly what they want,” says Ofer Steinberg, owner/optician at Block & Zuckerman Optician. Since 1951 the business has been known for its customer-first philosophy, attention to detail, and for offering a wide selection of stylish frames at affordable prices. “We pay particular attention to the client’s preOfer Steinberg, scription, and select frames that will work,” says owner/optician Steinberg. “We’ll present the client a selection of frames to try, and give an honest opinion on what we feel works best for their individual face.” Because of his and his staff’s many years of experience, it is not unusual for the first suggestion to be the final choice. “Once the client is satisfied, we make sure the frame fits perfectly,” he says. Designer lines include some handmade in France, such as Sabine Be, and well-known lines such as Oliver Peoples and Tom Ford. But, says Steinberg, “We do our homework when we look for eyewear, and our clients can find fashionable frames at affordable prices.” Block & Zuckerman Opticians

All Aboard: The Ultimate Kids’ Zone Former Gesher Summer Camp Director Finds New Way to Provide Kids with a Fun Time By Jessica Schiffenhaus, photos by Dan Epstein

L

ivingston resident Scott Lantzman has a history of creating exceptional experiences for kids. For 14 years, Scott was the director of Gesher Summer Camp, a well-reputed Livingston day camp that closed in 2015. As he searched for his next big endeavor, Scott continued volunteering in the community as a member of the Livingston Soccer Club Board of Trustees, as co-director of Kinderkickers, President of Collins Elementary School PTO, a Cub Scout leader and the youth chair at Temple Beth Shalom. Finally, in April 2017, Scott became the President of FunTime Junction, an 18,000 square foot indoor children’s play-place in Fairfield—only a 10-minute drive from Livingston.

Scott Lantzman

Upon entering, visitors are greeted by friendly staff, vibrant decor and fun in every direction. The sounds of tokens clanking and children laughing fill the air. FunTime Junction has been a destination for children’s fun for over 20 years. Of course, it’s changed over the years— now with exciting, colorful decor and more trendy games and attractions. “I’ve been taking my own camp experience, and trying to find ways to incorporate that into what we do here,” said Scott. “Our ultimate goal is to create a positive experience for all of our guests.”

FunTime Junction features a huge game room, with brandnew arcade games like dual NBA Hoops. Kids can explore the towering, multi-level playscape, the bounce house, the jump pillow, or laser tag. There are also fun amenities like a photo booth, prize counter and Build a Buddy. Birthday parties are commonplace—there are private party rooms for these events. Parents can choose from a variety of affordable birthday packages—which can be booked online—with inclusions such as tokens for each kid, pizza and drinks, and access to the major attractions. Scott reduced the amount of concurrent birthday parties, to provide a better party atmosphere. my Tran, DMD, is a recent addition to The Silverstrom Group, The award-winning dental practice, led by Drs. David and Gary Silverstrom. Recently, Dr Tran provided Inside Livingston Magazine with insight into her background and her approach to oral wellness.

What advances in dentistry have helped you excel in your profession? The technological advances that let us perform same day dentistry is astounding. We are one of a few practices that maintain a dedicated in-house ceramist and porcelain laboratory to custom create smiles, crowns, bridges, dentures and implants in one day, with little discomfort to the patient and in less time and visits than traditional techniques require. What do you bring to the practice that is unique? As a recent associate, I have been trained in newer technologies. This allows me to complement the skills of the other dentists in the practice. This training helps me exceed the expected level of care to our patients. I join a patient centered practice philosophy. My unique interest in total health and wellness and the impact of oral health on ones overall health is supported by this mindset. My objective is to provide solutions, not services, to maintain overall health and wellness You have joined five dentists who are established in the practice? Do all of you practice general dentistry? The dental delivery of the future is currently practiced at The Silverstrom Group. Assembled under one roof are preeminent specialists. This includes a board certified oral surgeon, a periodontist, and an endodontist. This complements the restorative, general, and cosmetic dentists. I thus join this wonderfully collaborative effort, that provides individualized solutions for patients of all ages, from 2 through 102! This seamless integration and approach offers the best care for the patient, without having to run from office to office. An interdisciplinary practice is also time and cost effective.

Dr. Amy Tran, Dr. Gary Silverstrom & Dr. David Silverstrom

I understand you have participated in numerous outreach programs in dental education and screening for adults and children? Why is this important to you? I was raised to help and serve. It is part of my personality. I enjoy teaching, sharing, and helping. Education and screening fit into my belief in prevention. I am always thorough with caring and with attentive listening to patients, answering their questions and providing detailed information regarding prevention. How did this impact your decision in joining this practice and the community? My decision to join The Silverstrom Group was hugely affected by their decades long passion of for giving. Making a sustainable difference in the quality of life for those in the community is the practice credo and this is important to me. Do you share an overriding philosophy about your approach to dentistry? We are all driven to provide the best care through comfort, safety, and satisfaction. We place patients first. We also strive to remain up -to-date by consistently investing in superior technology as well as education. All of us are committed to providing five-star service. Patient trust and confidence mean everything to us. Dentistry is a wonderfully satisfying profession.

or more than 100 years, the Moomjy family business has covered two continents. Three generations have adorned the homes of its customers with beautiful carpets and floors. Beginning with a small store in Turkey in 1915, the Moomjy family started its American franchise in Bloomfield in 1955 and soon established five more stores in New Jersey and one in Manhattan. Robert Moomjy grew up in the family business, and in 2005, as a private owner, created his own brand identity. Armed with more than 40 years of experience, he started his first business R. Moomjy’s Floorsmart in Livingston. Renaming the company Moomjy Carpet & Floor, he moved the store in 2016 to its present location in East Hanover. His family’s original mission of providing superb customer service and products endures. “We want our customers to be satisfied. As a small, family operated business, we can offer customers many benefits that a larger box store cannot. We provide a superior selection of products and attend to our customers from selection to installation,” states Moomjy.

Winter’s Ahead—Is Your Boiler Up for It? Don Dowling Plumbing & Heating ensures the heat is on By Janice Hashe, photo by Dan Epstein

T

he cold weather is coming, and Don Dowling Plumbing and Heating will make sure your boilers and heating systems are ready for it. Specializing in installing high-efficiency boilers and radiant heating, owner Don Dowling states, “We’re fully trained in how to set up and service the equipment— and that can make all the difference.” The newest generation of high-efficiency boilers are gas operated, silent and wall mounted. Dowling feels radiant heating systems are by far the most efficient way to heat homes and offices. In addition, Dowling Plumbing & Heating can install radiant heating for snow melting. When a prospective client calls, Dowling will schedule a meeting to go over of the work that the job will entail. Once agreed upon, it typically takes about two weeks to complete. Dowling emphasizes, “I will respond to all types of jobs, even very small plumbing or heating jobs. It’s my belief that if you do quality work, you will have a client for life.”

Raising the Barre on Fitness Xtend Barre Goes the Extra Mile By Martta Kelly, photo by Dan Epstein

tend Barre is the only boutique fitness studio of its kind in New Jersey, offering a patented barre technique with a strong basis in Pilates that is adaptable to other popular workouts, combining cardio, strength training, and flexibility. Conveniently located in Livingston’s Town Center, Xtend Barre caters to all ages and fitness levels, including pregnant women. “For people living in Suburban Essex, there is no shortage of fitness centers, everything from spinning, kick boxing, and of course, barre studios,” said Elizabeth Wyder, owner of the Livingston studio. “That’s why it’s so important for us to go the extra mile and set our studio apart.” Xtend Barre, an international company, is the brainchild of Andrea Rogers, a former professional dancer and choreographer who sought to create an intense workout that combines the beauty of dance movements with Pilates, which many dancers practice to keep their bodies strong and supple. There are currently approximately 30 Xtend Barre studios in the United States, but only one in New Jersey.

To reap the benefits of Xtend Barre, one does not need to have a dance or fitness background, Wyder points out. “Upon visiting our studio, clients meet with an instructor who assesses their fitness level and discusses goals with them,” she said, adding to that “all classes at Xtend Barre are low-impact and therefore, easy on the joints.” For those looking for an extra intense workout, Xtend Barre offers a class that combines Barre with TRX suspension, a form of exercise developed by Navy SEALs that employs a suspension trainer tool to help develop strength, balance, flexibility and core stability simultaneously. Open since June 9, 2017, Wyder said the response has been terrific. “People say they can tell the difference between us and other studios 15 minutes into the class.” Xtend Barre 1150 Town Center Way, Livingston, NJ 07039 973-422-0077

Custom Designed: The Name Says It All By Deborah Schapiro, photos by Dan Epstein

Nancy Kornbluh & Steven Goffman

W

hen Steven Goffman founded Custom Designed in 2001, his focus was on personalized custom closets, which he had been creating for almost a decade of part of a larger housewares business. Sixteen years later, the company has expanded into custom cabinetry, entertainment units, home theaters, and kitchen, bath, basement, garage and home office renovations. At Custom Designed, it typically takes two to three weeks from consultation to installation. The initial consultation is complimentary and is done at the client’s home or office. Senior Designer and Sales Manager Nancy Kornbluh notes, “When I’m meeting a client, I don’t just whip out a tape measure. I want to find out what isn’t working and what he or she is looking for; whether it’s increased function or a more attractive product – or both.”

Kornbluh finds that for many projects, clients often want to move forward immediately after seeing the sketches she and founder Goffman create. In addition to sketches, they bring the showroom to their customers - always providing samples of all materials and options – both melamine and real wood – making it easier for the client to envision the project. Home entertainment units are a favorite to design and bring to life. Goffman says, “We can create a new home entertainment unit or retrofit an existing one. People’s needs change; they may buy a larger flat-screen TV or have more kids and require more storage space. For these types of projects, we bring creative solutions to make sure the units are functional and practical.” The Custom Designed Team will work with any specialist. Goffman explains, “From decorators, architects and

contractors, we love the opportunity to resolve design issues, use the most of any space and work with home owners to exceed their expectations.” Goffman explains, “We have been honored the last several years as being voted #1 Best of Essex in Home improvement, custom cabinetry and home remodeling.” Custom Designed 973-783-5788 www.customdesignednj.com

t Cosmetic and General Dental Care in Roseland, Dr. RoseAnn Giannella practices a full scope of general and cosmetic dentistry. One treatment she often performs is dental implants, used both for patients with missing teeth and with dentures. Dental implants have become the norm for those missing a tooth, as they act as a replacement that looks, feels, and functions like natural teeth. Patients regain the ability to eat normally and can smile with confidence. More and more patients are also turning to dental implants as a way to secure their dentures. In this procedure, dental implants are placed in the bone and the dentures are then attached to the implants. As noted by Dr. Giannella, “They provide a secure placement of the denture. The benefit of getting implants with dentures is that they are not removable like most dentures, so they don’t move around– they fit securely.” For patients unhappy with the huge lifestyle change of living with dentures, implants work as a way to make dentures easier to deal with. A Boutique Dry Cleaning Business That Offers Unique Services By Deborah Schapiro, photo by Dan Epstein

W

hen Jessica Kim opened her dry-cleaning business on South Livingston Avenue in 2002, she called it simply Grace Cleaners. Fifteen years later, the name is unchanged but the services offered have expanded and adapted to changing times. Tailoring is a specialty for Grace Cleaners. Jessica and her assistant seamstress Maria will do anything from a simple torn lining repair to the most complex alterations of formal wear, including bridal gowns. Unlike other dry-cleaning establishments, they offer custom tailoring such as creating drapes and cushions from scratch in addition to cleaning and repairing them.

The cleaning products used at Grace Cleaners, are all organic. Jessica explains, “Using organic products keeps the colors brighter, and organic products are also hypoallergenic, which is important to many of my customers.” Grace Cleaners also offers pickup and delivery service. Jessica began this service six years ago to help out a customer who was juggling work and young children; a great number of her customers now use—and greatly appreciate—this service. The majority of Grace Cleaners’ customers are naturally from Livingston, but they also come from Morristown, Basking Ridge, and even New York City. Jessica has a simple explanation for why some travel so far: “They know that we do quality work.”

ivingston Tire Company is a family-owned business that has been assisting Essex County with its tire purchases and automobile repair needs for 87 years. Their mission is to provide honest, professional service at a fair price. The company’s founder, Mike Kirwan’s late father, believed that when you ‘treat people like family, they will come back.’ “That focus has been the bedrock of our business since 1929,” he states. The company is committed to providing their customers with a wide variety of products that fit all needs and budgets. They sell all major brands of tires, and have more than 1,200 tires in stock and thousands more available on short notice. We put our years of experience and knowledge to work helping each customer make the choice that is right for them, and we price our tires fully-installed, so you will never encounter a “mystery charge” after purchasing. They also believe that repairing or replacing a tire should not get in the way of your day—most work is done in less than an hour. Beyond tires, they are the only AAA-approved repair facility in Livingston, and have continually passed their evaluations and maintained the high standards that they set. Their staff and technicians have built upon their expertise over years, producing a combination of experience and training that is hard to find elsewhere. They service most makes and models, often at prices far below what dealers charge, and they pride themselves on never doing a repair that isn’t necessary. At Livingston Tire Company, they are committed to getting to know their customers, their cars and any particular needs of the client. Kirwan states, “We are in the business of making customers for life, and we would love to add you to our family.” Livingston Tire Company 56 East Northfield Road, Livingston | 973-533-0101 www.livingstontire.com

Fur trimming, pedicures, and spa treatments provide additional pampering. Lori Zimmerman, owner of Pups @ Play, introduces dog training, an important part of a dog’s socialization, as the newest offering. The training can be incorporated into another program, or provided as an individual service. Lori answers commonly-asked questions below.

At what age should the socialization process begin, and why is it important? The younger the dog, the better. A good age to socialize your dog is at about three months. Socialization, however, is ongoing. It is important to provide your dog with opportunities to interact with other dogs and people in positive, safe places on a continuous basis. Humans and other dogs can guide the puppy’s learning. At what age should dogs begin training? Dog training should begin around five months of age. Training teaches your dog good manners, which complements his/her socialization. Are there any breeds that are easier to socialize? Any breed is good to socialize if you start the process early. Just like people, however, dogs have distinct temperaments, and respond differently to social environments. In general, dogs can learn to react positively in appropriate conditions, if taught properly.

Lori Zimmerman

What is the best environment in which to introduce the dogs to training? We can train dogs while they participate in our daycare, or while they board with us. Training can be included in these packages. It is really good use of the time that you and your dog spend apart. Your dog will come back to you trained in basic skills. What final advice do you offer to dog owners? Your dog is your best friend. Time away from your dog is just as important as time with your dog. When away from you, your dog is supported in a loving and monitored environment here at Pups@Play. A socialized, trained dog is a happy and content dog. aint Barnabas Medical Center, a flagship facility of RWJBarnabas Health, unveiled a soaring, five-story, 241,000 square-foot addition to the Livingston medical center on September 6. Saint Barnabas Medical Center, renowned for its high-quality clinical care and medical services, received a $25 million gift from Leon and Toby Cooperman, which provided the catalyst for the construction of the vast expansion to the medical center, to be named the Cooperman Family Pavilion. “The extraordinary Cooperman Family Pavilion exemplifies the remarkable care that is provided at this award-winning medical center,” said Barry H. Ostrowsky, President and Chief Executive Officer of RWJBarnabas Health. The beautiful, natural light-infused building reflects evidence-based approaches to promoting healing and improving care. The pavilion will encompass 114 new private rooms; an expansive 56-bassinet Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU); many of the outpatient diagnostic services; a central registration area; and a same-day surgery suite. A new, three-story parking garage also has been built to accommodate more than 400 vehicles. Patients, family members, community members, physicians and staff all provided their suggestions and input design details include curb-free showers to prevent falls, acoustical materials to lessen noise and hybrid operating suites that allow surgeons to transfer easily from minimally invasive to open procedures. The NICU will have a series of single rooms in a pod design that allows families to bond with their baby within a few steps of nearby medical staff. There also will be two new family rooms that offer parents the opportunity to “sleep over” and care for their baby within the hospital environment prior to their discharge. For more information on the Cooperman Family Pavilion, visit www.rwjbhinfo.org/Cooperman.aspx?furl=cooperman. A Pizzeria with a Heart

Master Pizza Raises Awareness of Rare Genetic Disease By Deborah Schapiro, photos by Dan Epstein Armando Tauro

ike local businesses everywhere, Master Pizza is a big supporter of its own community. Marylee Castronovo, owner with her husband Frank, notes, “We always give to the Livingston police department, public schools and sports teams.” In addition to donations of pizza, however, Master Pizza raises funds and awareness of Duchene Muscular Dystrophy. DMD is a rare and ultimately fatal genetic disease in which the absence of a protein called dystrophin causes the body’s muscles—ultimately including the heart—to progressively weaken.

The Castronovos are supporters of JAR of Hope, an organization which funds ongoing research aimed at curing and ending DMD. JAR of Hope was founded by James and Karen Raffone of Manalapan in 2013 after their son was diagnosed with the illness; JAR refers to his initials (James Anthony Raffone). Marylee explains, “This hits close to home for us, because Jim and Karen are neighbors and friends of ours.” To support the Raffones, Frank, Marylee and members of their family created Castronovo Cares, an initiative with the aim of raising $100,000 by the end of 2017. In order to meet this goal, Master Pizza and 12 other Castronovoowned pizzerias throughout New Jersey will, for the rest of this year, donate $1 of every $9.99 large cheese pizza purchased to JAR of Hope.

In addition to their charitable efforts, Marylee says, “We pride ourselves on great customer service, prompt delivery, and of course really good food.” Customers clearly agree; Master Pizza has been in Livingston for 27 years. There are also Master Pizzas in Union, West Orange and (as of August) Carlstadt. Customer favorites in Livingston lean toward Italian-American classics such as fried calamari, pizza Margherita and penne in vodka sauce. Definitely not traditional, but also very popular is the Las Vegas pizza: Mozzarella, cheddar and gorgonzola cheese with bacon and sliced potatoes served in an Alfredo sauce. Master Pizza 379 E.
