Letter from the Mayor
F
irst, I would like to thank the publishers for bringing this great magazine to Little Falls. Your magazine is just one of many ways that Little Falls is working to connect our residents to our local businesses and our booming downtown. Small businesses are the backbone of our local economy, and the support of Little Falls residents will help our Township to infuse this money locally. I am proud of the progress that has taken place in our town over the past year—from the revitalization of our downtown area, to designating “areas in need of redevelopment,” to the increase in the academic performance of our local schools. Little Falls has always been a great place to live and raise a family, and with the progress we will continue to make together, we will make our town even more vibrant. Once vacant store fronts are now being filled, and residents will continue to see our downtown take strides towards increased beautification, as we see the upcoming installation of new sidewalks and curbs, as well as additional municipal parking. More and more individuals are becoming involved – and I invite everyone to become part of the progress. As a third generation Little Fallsian, I am happy to call Little Falls my home, and I am confident that my children will be happy to do the same. —James Belford Damiano Mayor, Township of Little Falls

What’s Old is New Again in Little Falls Town Sees a Booming Revitalization of Its Downtown By Jackie Sawyer, photos by Dan Epstein

hile many towns are just now revitalizing their historic downtowns—Little Falls, a town that was founded in 1711, started their revitalization with the Main Street USA Program back in 1990. Main Street USA is a revitalization program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The Township was ahead of the curve because its original infrastructure allowed for the “much-coveted” quaint wide Main Street lined with vibrant businesses.

Fall 2017
The Town’s renaissance began when the Beattie Carpet Mill was converted into The Mill at Little Falls— a 14-acre campus featuring 300 luxury condominiums and lofts, walking paths, a pool, tennis courts and a tremendous view of the Falls. Many businesses recognized Little Falls as a perfect location to open a shop or restaurant, including Gerald Ferraro’s upscale hair salon, Shag86, that is headquartered in an old bank building; and Main St. Antiques, which is located in an old pharmacy building. Business is booming according to attorney John J. Veteri, Jr., Esq., who said, “Businesses are flocking to set up shop and join the energy and vitality of our charming town.” Recently, A Taco Affair, Aquila Pizza, Daniela’s Bistro and Casa Arturo joined the Main Street mix that includes veterans Venus Creations Jewelers, Pencilworks Studio and Falls Creamery. “Being a part of the revitalization of Little Falls is a lot like building my restaurant here at 81 Main Street, said A Taco Affair owner Jessica Phillips. “There’s already good bones and charming character, and then you get to put your own stamp on it, and that is something special. It’s a privilege to be able to do what I love in such a great community.” Business isn’t the only thing thriving in town–there are also several new housing developments that are underway in Little Falls. Veteri, a partner in KV Realty, LLC, the developers of The Bromley at 44 Main Street, said this exciting new mixed-use development has just been completed and includes 6 retail spaces and 34 luxury residences with many amenities. Veteri also mentioned another mixed-use building is planned by KV Realty to be built “in our great downtown.” In addition to the developments downtown, there are several other developments in various stages of construction throughout Little Falls, including Mountaintop Estates at Great Notch— 24-single-family luxury homes; Autumn Pointe at Little Falls, 24 townhomes near the Cedar Grove border; and The Abbe at Little Falls Station, 50 brick Georgetownstyle townhomes within walking distance of the train station (The Montclair Boonton Line). The new restaurants and stores benefit the community, Montclair State University, and visitors to The Yogi Berra Museum and the Jackals Stadium, all located within the Township of Little Falls. “It’s an exciting time in Little Falls,” said Ferraro of Shag86. flourishing community needs a flourishing school system. So, in 2014, after the Little Falls Board of Education identified a need for a foundation, a group of community-minded Little Falls residents created the nonprofit Little Falls Education Foundation (LFEF), with the express purpose of supporting and enhancing the three Little Falls Public Schools serving pre-K through 8th grade. According to LFEF President Michael Schiff, the foundation has raised more than $35,000. The funds have been distributed district wide as grants, funding “innovative ideas to enrich education,” “future-focused initiatives,” and professional development for teachers. “Every grade level has been impacted,” he says, “and virtually every curriculum.” One grant, for example, supports 4th graders reading Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, seeing the Broadway musical production, then comparing and contrasting the two. This was so well received, says Schiff, that LFEF plans to fund something similar annually.
He emphasizes that LFEF communicates closely with the board of education and the school administration, “but is separate and distinct from both. They provide guidance, but not direction.” LFEF’s own board is diverse, comprising both parents and non-parents. Schiff, a realtor, does not have children but strongly believes in supporting public education. On October 27, the third annual Oktoberfest fundraiser takes place. Schiff encourages community members to attend—and to consider volunteering. “Everyone on the board of trustees, which consists of 14 members, including President Michael Schiff, Vice President Michael Donovan, Treasurer John J. Veteri, Jr., and Secretary Teri Gosman Corage, has found their participation to be very worthwhile,” he says. “Visit our website for more information on what we do, and see how you can get involved and contribute to the LFEF.”

Reflexology & Relaxation at A Tranquil Journey By Janis Hashe, Photo by Dan Epstein
T
he ancient healing art of reflexology is being discovered by more and more Americans, says the founder of Little Falls’ A Tranquil Journey. “The relaxation and pain-relief benefits of my practice comes from my ability to clear the body’s passages of blockages and inflammation,” states Renea. Reflexology focuses on the many nerve endings concentrated in both hands and feet, using gentle pressure to sooth and open up various parts of the body. Renea, who has been practicing since 1998, also includes techniques for the neck, shoulders and back, integrated with feet and hand work. “Reflexology can be very effective in relieving back, hip, neck, and leg pain,” Renea states. “It helps with sinus problems, asthma, migraine, sciatica, and so much more.” The practice sees children and adults. Renea feels that it is important to get to know patients, “so I can address their individual needs.” New patients are encouraged to call with any questions and schedule an appointment so they can experience the benefits of reflexology.

f you think the only thing that you can check out at the local ShopRite in Little Falls is a bag of groceries, then think again. The store has a full service pharmacy, making it your one-stop shop. Whether you have a medical concern, are caring for a loved one, want to lose weight, eat healthier, have a food question, or simply need help understanding how to read labels. Pharmacy Supervisor Michael Degelamann said that, “Plenty of customers are living with diabetes, cardiovascular issues, and high blood pressure—taking different medications for different conditions, so most people usually want to know about potential drug interactions.” He’s been a familiar face in Little Falls for almost 23 years and “If there’s an issue with medication we’ll call to make sure the doctor is aware. If someone has a cough or cold and they need over-the-counter medicine, but don’t want it to conflict with another medication, we’re happy to answer any questions.”
Dietician: Heather Shasa Customers can drop off their prescription, and have it filled while they shop, so the ShopRite pharmacy service is fast and convenient. An automatic refill program is available, and those who can’t drive to the pharmacy, can take advantage of free delivery service. Retail Registered Dietitian Heather Shasa works alongside the ShopRite pharmacists, as needed, to give customers personalized nutritional advice. “It’s very confusing these days when you go shopping, so it’s helpful to have someone there who’s an expert in nutrition, knowledgeable about various products, and can help you navigate through the supermarket,” Health and Wellness Media Specialist Marla Camins of Corporate Communications explained.
Pharmacist: Michael A. Degelmann
A recipient of the 2014 Supermarket Dietitians of the Year Award, Shasa presents free events for customers including Menu Ideas and Recipe Makeovers; Shop with the Dietitian; Cooking Demonstrations and Food Tastings; Kid’s Healthy Eating Events—ShopRite Sprouts, and more! These events and programs work
to promote health and wellness: “Whether you are looking for ways to reinvent your dinner meals or navigate the aisles, the in-store dietitians are here to assist you,” said Heather Shasa. “It is my hope that the nutrition services provided here at ShopRite of Little Falls continue to provide healthy inspiration and education and to help you take small steps on your journey towards wellness.” In collaboration with the pharmacy, this year’s free glucose (sugar) screening will be held November 2, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. The pharmacy opens Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Sunday, 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. They also offer 24-hour emergency service. Little Falls Township Public Schools
One District…One Team…One Vision
In the spring, students in grades 3-8 participate in the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) assessment. This assessment measures each student’s academic progress with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards. The results from the PARCC assessments are a helpful tool in measuring each child’s success as well as the district’s program and curricular accomplishments and needs. Over the past two years, the Little Falls School District has seen
growth and advancement. In the area of Mathematics, 16% of the students moved into the top two performance levels (meeting and exceeding expectations) and 7% of students moved out of the lowest two performance levels (not meeting and partially meeting). In the area of English Language Arts, 10% of the students moved into the top two performance levels (meeting and exceeding expectations) and 5% of students moved out of the lowest two performance levels (not meeting and partially meeting).
The academic growth our district is experiencing is directly attributed to the collaboration of all stakeholders. Board of Education, administrators, teachers, support staff, volunteers, educational partners, and community members, without your countless hours of dedication and support, none of this would be possible. Thank you for helping us develop an environment of excellence and high achievement for all. “Alone we can do so little. Together we can do so much.”

Their daily mission is to assist children in grades PreK-2 in performing routines and activities, as well as acting as positive role models.
PEER GROUP CONNECTION
Peer Group Connection is a leadership program in which selected 8th grade students have the opportunity to participate. This group of students just returned from a summer leadership retreat, which was sponsored by the Little Falls Education Foundation (LFEF), where they worked together to develop trust and relationships while developing leadership skills. Throughout the year, Peer Leaders will work in co-leader pairs as group discussion leaders and positive role models for younger peers. During weekly sessions, peer leaders will lead discussions and activities with the same group of 5th graders. The goal of this program is to help 5th graders feel welcomed into middle school and develop skills they need to handle everyday challenges.

Life, Hair and Happiness Shag86 Gives its Clients Fabulous Hair and More By Deborah Schapiro Photography by Dan Epstein
I
t is often said that numbers don’t lie. In the case of local salon Shag86, they tell the story of a thriving business.
To begin with, Shag86 has been open for 13 years. Owner Gerald Ferraro had almost a decade of experience working at a different salon before striking out on his own. He brought with him his desire to make people happy through fabulous haircuts and color; in fact, “Life, hair and happiness” is his salon’s prominently displayed motto. Other important Shag86 numbers are 22 (stylists), five (makeup artists) and one (esthetician). Ferraro notes “Most of our stylists were personally trained by myself and our salon educators;” he also continues to train up-and-coming stylists. The stylists have to be able to cut men’s and children’s hair as well as women’s; Ferraro says, “We are definitely family-friendly here.” The staff, which includes his indispensable salon coordinator Helena, works in a luxurious space: 6,000 (and growing) square feet spread over three floors. The space includes a bridal loft, which houses the makeup suite. Ferraro offers refreshments and a photographer, as well as a makeup session, to bridal party guests. Makeup and skin care were not offered when Shag86 first opened back in 2004, but Ferraro observes that “They are now an important part of our menu of services.” He adds that esthetician Maria offers four different types of facials, as well as an eye refresher mini-facial. She also does face and body waxing, and makeup applications and lessons.
Gerald Ferraro
Unusual for a salon, Shag86 is open six days a week. This suggests a very busy, successful venture, for which Ferraro is grateful: “I want to thank my clients for their loyalty and my staff for making the magic happen. Making people happy is our goal, and I like to think we meet that goal every day.”

ith one photograph, you are transported to a distinct moment that is forever frozen in time. You instantly remember how it felt when your child would slowly fall asleep in your arms. You remember the sound of giggles and little feet pattering down the hallway. The seemingly mundane moments from years gone suddenly have new meaning. Portraits have the unique power to connect us to who we were, who we are and who we hope to become. They lead us to a connected life filled with purpose, discovery and joy. These are the moments we live for. These are the moments we celebrate. Whether it’s an imminent birth, a pending retirement, or any day in between, every day there’s something to celebrate.

A “Plan” for Any Future Plan Architecture Handles Both Residential & Commercial Projects By Deborah Schapiro, photo by Dan Epstein

an D’Agostino likes to describe Plan Architecture, the firm he established in early 2014, as “fairly diverse,” designing both residential and commercial buildings. The 10-member firm (eight architects, an interior decorator and an administrator) is also state-of-the-art, using the latest computer software to create 3-D architectural models. At the same time, says D’Agostino, “We’re very relatable. When we work with our clients, we’re helping them think critically about what they need and what they want, which are not always the same thing.” He explains the Plan process: “The first time we meet with a residential client is generally a walk-through in their home, where we can really see what they want to do and ask relevant questions. Assuming the client decides that we are a good fit, we then look at local zoning codes for guidelines. Back at our office, we create a construction document, which turns the ideas into actual drawings.” The completion of the construction document does not mean the end of the firm’s involvement. D’Agostino notes, “We work fairly regularly with around 30 contractors who
Dan D’Agostino do the actual building of the project.” The project may be as large as a 260-unit apartment complex comprising four buildings and a parking structure, or as small as an addition to a front porch. Whatever the size or type, D’Agostino says, “We work at the client’s pace; we never want them to feel rushed.”

or more than 40 years, Premier Properties The Damiano Group has upheld its motto “Writing Happy Beginnings.” True to its Little Falls origins, Premier Properties began as a family business with Raymond Damiano, Sr. and his son, Ray, as the owners. In 1983, Warren Damiano, the son and brother of the founders, joined the team.

Today, the Little Falls real estate company has grown to 40 licensed agents. Still a family business with a commitment to excellence, the Brothers Damiano now lead not only with the original company values, but also with a 21st century business model. The brothers bring years of business and real estate experience to the company. Ray is the broker of record and is a tax assessor for several Bergen County towns. Warren is also a broker. Both are licensed builders and
Premier Properties retains some of the best real estate agents in the area through their “Agent-Centric” business model. New agents begin their careers earning a 70% commission and $100 off the licensing course. In addition, there are no franchise, desk fees, or insurance costs to agents. Advertising funds are available for agents, as are year-end bonuses for those who have met the established sales criteria. An in-house training program also helps agents enhance their business and sales skills. “We have a top-notch staff of great agents, some have been with us since we started. They have kept up with technology and the changes in the real estate industry to best serve our clients,” remarks Warren.
“We have learned over the last 40 plus years of being in business that unlike some of the large corporate real estate chains who are concerned about the ‘bottom line,’ we are more concerned about servicing our clients’ needs than the bottom line.” —Ray Damiano The agents work together in a cooperative atmosphere. While the agents have individual goals, they also strive to achieve overall company goals. A family-like support structure is part of the company culture. have managed condominium properties. Ray has over 42 years of experience and Warren has 34 years listing and selling residential and commercial properties. About two years ago, Premier Properties regained its independent status enabling the company to better serve their clients in Passaic, Essex, Morris, and Bergen counties. Premier Properties lists individual homes, condominiums, senior living housing, townhomes, and rentals in these areas. “We have learned over the last 40 plus years of being in business that unlike some of the large corporate real estate chains who are concerned about the ‘bottom line,’ we are more concerned about servicing our clients’ needs than the bottom line. I think that is what sets us apart from our competition and why most of our clients come back years after,” states Ray.
Premier Properties also remains committed to the community through its charitable contributions. From its inception, Premier Properties has supported the Recreation Center with the donation of a scoreboard and fencing. They have sponsored numerous Little Falls athletic teams, as well. As ardent supporters of our Fallen Soldiers and Veterans, Premier Properties has donated through beautiful tributes and over 2,000 flags at memorial parks. uying or selling a home is often a complex and emotional experience. The right agent is essential to make the process smooth and successful, says Nancy Scancarella, owner/manager of Realty Executives in Little Falls. “The Big Valley area has many potential buyers, but low inventory,” she says. “Experience in this market is very important. We pride ourselves on listening to our buyers and sellers, and gaining their trust, so that we can guide them in making the right choice.” Scancarella’s office is full service, providing referrals to attorneys, mortgage brokers, home inspectors— all vetted and reliable.

“As a locally based office, we can give personalized service. Buyers need to be pre-approved, and sellers need to understand staging,” she says. Scancarella suggests potential clients call her directly to discuss their needs. “I can direct people to the best agent for them. It’s a key relationship—we’ll make sure it works.” Stop in the office and celebrate Realty Executives’ seven-year anniversary with Nancy and the team on November 16 from 5 to 7pm.

Optimal Dental Health = Beautiful Smiles By Cynthia Burns, photo by Dan Epstein

“
e strongly believe in providing comprehensive, quality care in a comfortable, gentle manner,” says Dr. Marina Guelfguat, who established A to Z Family Dentistry in 2013. She purposely chose the name because the practice treats all ages and provides the spectrum of dental procedures from routine, preventative care to surgery. She adds, “We will help you achieve optimal dental health and create a beautiful smile.” Dr. Marina has extensive experience in cosmetic, restorative, pediatric, endodontic and periodontic dentistry. She has assembled a staff that complements her areas of expertise. Dr. Rosa Madrid-Echo performs all phases of preventative and restorative dentistry for children and adults. Dr. Manuel Barry Gordon has extensive experience in implant surgery, periodontal plastic and traditional surgery, bone grafting and sinus lifts. A recent addition to the staff is Dr. Sung Min Lee, who is affiliated with the Center for Dentistry at Hackensack University Medical Center. Collectively, the dentists bring years of expertise to the practice. Dr. Marina takes pride in running a digital office, which includes digital patient records and digital X-rays. She uses technologically advanced equipment that is more sophisticated than traditional tools and that provide a better result for the patient. For example, Dr. Marina
routinely uses Digital Apex Locator for root canal procedures which eliminates the need for multiple X Rays and reduces radiation exposure to patients. “The practice has been steadily growing and strives to provide quality care,” notes Dr. Marina. She invites area residents to schedule an appointment in the conveniently located office across from Passaic Valley High School.

Protecting the Kids Damiano Law Offices is a Full-Service Family Law Practice By Deborah Schapiro. Photo by Dan Epstein

oni Belford Damiano describes Damiano Law Offices, which she founded in 1987, as “a boutique family law practice.” The nine attorneys there (which includes her son, Little Falls Mayor, James Damiano) handle a variety of family disputes, including, but not limited to, divorce, child support and custody, domestic violence, adoptions and pre-nuptial agreements. According to Toni, family law is very different from other areas of law: “It is necessary to recognize that our clients are going through a very difficult time and are very vulnerable. It is a very emotional process and individuals are often at a crossroad in their lives. To do this kind of work, you have to truly care about the person you are representing. I tell all of the attorneys here that when they meet a client for the first time, they have to represent that client as if he or she is their only client.”
She notes, “There are no winners in a divorce; our objective is to keep the loss to a minimum. We first have to make certain that the children are protected. We then try to help the clients take the emotion out of the dispute as best they can so that they can treat the financial aspect as a business deal.” She adds that with the exception of genuine custody and domestic violence cases, most of her cases are successfully settled without going to trial. Toni, a former high school teacher and guidance counselor, recognizes that children frequently suffer the most in family disputes. She says, “My primary function is to protect the kids; that is what drives whatever actions I take in a matrimonial matter.”

ossi Decorating Center is something of a New Jersey institution. Owner Bernard Rossi notes that it has been family-owned and -operated since 1907, when his grandfather established Louis F. Rossi Paint & Decorating in Orange. His father changed the name to Rossi Paint in 1946; his brother and nephew continue to run the business there. After 20 years in Cedar Grove, Rossi Decorating Center relocated to Little Falls in 1997. Rossi Decorating offers window treatments, wall coverings and flooring. Its main focus, however, is paint. The store sells a complete range of Benjamin Moore Paints to homeowners and contractors alike. These include the environmentally conscious Natura, the budget-conscious ben, and the deluxe Century lines. Naturally, all of the above come in a wide variety of colors and finishes. Rossi also uses state-of-the-art mixing and tinting machines. Manager Pattie and owner Bernard have been guiding customers with color advice and product recommendations for 35 years. Bernard, himself, spent many years in the field of interior design and continues to share his expertise with his clients. He says, “We pride ourselves on creating the best possibilities to help people decorate their homes or businesses.”

Celebrating Lives with Dignity By Cynthia Burns, photography by Dan Epstein Anthony and Phil Sgobba
W
“
e guide families in erecting a memorial that is appropriate for their loved one,” says Anthony Sgobba, president of Sgobba’s Monument Works. “We listen to the needs of our customers and provide them with the best quality of service.” These guiding principles have prevailed since the business was established in 1976 by parents Phil and Grace. Today Grace and her son Phil Jr., who is vice president, run the business with Anthony. Sgobba’s carries a wide selection of styles including flat bronze memorials, double monuments to honor two family members, monuments with photographs, grass markers and customized one-of-a kind memorials. It usually takes six to eight weeks to create a monument. Highly customized ones may take eight months or longer.
Damiano Law Offices is a boutique matrimonial law firm well known in New Jersey as an experienced divorce and family law firm helping countless clients through difficult times. Areas of Practice: • Family Law • Equitable Distribution • Divorce • Alimony • Child Custody • Domestic Violence • Child Support • Relocation Also Real Estate Closings, Wills, POA’s & Medical Directives…
The business is more than choosing a head stone. “It’s to achieve the tribute and to achieve the vision you have,” says Sgobba. He cautions that the emotional aspect of death should not overshadow economics, meaning he and his family will work with customers to spend their financial resources wisely. “We assist more than 1,000 families a year,” he notes, “including the next generation of our customers. That’s a tribute to what we do.” Another testament to the skilled craftsmanship demonstrated by Sgobba’s is that the business has been commissioned to create civic memorials in surrounding towns. Among them is a tribute to boxer Joe Louis in Pompton Lakes. Sgobba soberly comments, “No memorial will bring back your loved one. We celebrate the life of your loved one with dignity.”

NJ Spine & Joint Offers Revolutionary Cold Laser Treatments Reduces Pain and Speeds Healing with No Side Effects By Martta Kelly, photos by Dan Epstein
W
hether it is a nagging backache that won’t go away or a recent knee injury from an impromptu basketball game, the office of Dr. Glenn Sorrentino of NJ Spine & Joint in Cedar Grove offers expertise and experience in helping patients become—and stay—pain free. He answered some questions about his practice:
Who is your typical patient? We treat all ages, from children to teenagers to senior citizens. No matter what your age, our aim is to correct your problem, get rid of your pain, and get you back to living your life.
You mentioned cold laser therapy. What is special about it? It’s the most advanced technology today that reduces pain, speeds healing, and has no side effects. It is used widely by many major sports teams, including the Giants, the New Jersey Devils, and all the big-time college athletes. Not many practices offer this technology or are properly trained in using it.
How does it work?
Dr. Glenn Sorrentino
The cold laser reduces pain and inflammation while accelerating healing, encouraging cell growth, stimulating nerve function, and reducing scar tissue. It also works quickly. We get athletes back in the game much faster than typical therapy can.
What else sets you apart? We don’t just treat body parts, we treat the whole person. We are very big on biomechanics and balance. Often, pain in one area is caused by imbalances or weakness in other areas. For example, knee pain can be caused by the hips being out of alignment. Also, we are diversified, meaning that we offer chiropractic, medical massage, and physical therapy, as well as medical care and nutrition. Having a combination of specialties helps us meet our patients’ needs more effectively. We’re a one-stop shop.

Venus Creations Jewelers: Preserving Beauty By Christine S. Maxwell, photography by Dan Epstein Rick Post
T
hrough the gift of jewels, Venus Creations Jewelers preserves beauty and priceless memories with the same commitment as its namesake Venus, the timeless goddess of all that is beautiful. Celebrating its 45th year in Little Falls, owner Rick Post continues the traditions of the store originally established by his mother, Judy Post.
Custom design jewelry is another specialty. This jewelry, according to the customer’s specifications, can be done at the shop. Computer- Aided Design (CAD) will allow the customer to view a computer image of what the finished jewel will look like. Customers can create one-of-a-kind jewelry, often adding their own jewels to the finished piece.
The jewelry store’s 45 years of continued success can be attributed to their hardworking personnel and commitment to serving their customers, referred to as their “Venus family.” Generations of families have made the shop their go-to destination for all of their jewelry needs.
The store offers an array of traditional products including rings, watches, bracelets, and necklaces. A wide selection of precious gems, such as rubies, emeralds, sapphires, are available for purchase. A big draw is its bridal services, particularly diamond engagement rings. “We have three generations of family members who have purchased their engagement rings here,” states Rick.
Since opening, Venus Creations Jewelers has had an on-site jeweler skilled in handling the immediate needs of clients, from watch repairs to resetting diamonds. Most repairs can be done within a few days.
Rick is a certified gemologist who explains to clients the four c’s of a diamond, carat weight, cut, color, and
clarity, so that customers purchase diamonds with the best possible values. In addition, bridal customers can design unique settings for their wedding rings through CAD. Venus Creations Jewelers is committed to the community. The store donates regularly to the fire companies, local schools, and provides food for homeless families. In October, the shop will donate 100 “Wish Upon a Rock” beaded bracelets, with uplifting messages of connection, motivation and inspiration, to Quest Autism Foundation’s upcoming event. “Most customers become committed, regular customers, and ultimately, our friends,” Rick expresses.

New Luxury Community on the Mountaintop
Michael Schiff
OLD NEIGHBORHOOD CHARM WITH A MODERN FLAIR By Martta Kelly, Photography by Dan Epstein
M
ountaintop at Great Notch— a new community of luxury homes located in one of the most desirable sections of Little Falls—proves that you can “go home again.” With 24 homes tucked away in an exclusive enclave, this development conveys the intimacy and charm of neighborhoods of decades gone by, but with a modern flair. With nearly 4 decades of experience executing extensive building and development projects throughout New Jersey, developer Steve Lauda, owner/developer of Oakwood Estates at Great Notch, offers his knowledge and expertise in creating this exciting, sought-after, private community in Little Falls. “Mountaintop at Great Notch was designed with both families and empty nesters in mind,” said Michael Schiff of Keller Williams NJ Metro Group and Mountaintop Estates, who, with Tom Kazmark, is an agent in
charge of marketing the homes. “We offer 4 distinct models, 3 of which feature a large master bedroom suite on the first floor. All designs feature an open, spacious floor plan on the first floor, with the kitchen and great room combined, creating an open living space.” The neighborhood backs up to a conservation reserve that will never be developed, he added. And, Manhattan commuters will have access to a walkway, scheduled to be completed in 2018, connecting Mountaintop to the Midtown-direct train at the Montclair University station. “There are currently ten homes still for sale and we expect to have all of them sold by the second quarter of 2018,” Schiff said. The 3- and 4-bedroom homes range in size from 2,200 square-feet to 2,900 squarefeet. Pricing starts at $769,000 for a 2,200 square-foot, 3-bedroom home.
The developer, a longtime New Jersey native, is involved in all aspects of the project, Schiff emphasized, from start to finish. Included among their most noteworthy accomplishments are the development of the 53,000 squarefoot Robert Treat Academy Middle School in Newark; various church related construction projects with the Archdiocese of Newark; a warehouseto-15-unit condominium conversion in Bloomfield; several major office complexes in Essex County; and another residential sub-division in Little Falls. Mountaintop at Great Notch is not just another project for Lauda, however—he and his wife plan to make their home there as well.

The Frungillo’s Return Home By Rhonda L. Rivera, photos by Dan Epstein
Left to right: Robert Frungillo, Sr., Lisa Frungillo, Robert Frungillo, Jr., Michelle Frungillo & Gerry Frungillo
O
ver 35 years after leaving Little Falls, Frungillo Caterers is back. As children, Robert and Jerry Frungillo joined their elder brother Al and parents Alfred and Antoinette on the daily trek to their small deli in Verona. Six months later, the family business moved into a larger off-premise catering facility at 153 Route 23 in Little Falls. Fast-forward to today and the brothers are co-owners of the company, which is headquartered only steps away from where it all began and is in its third generation–two of Robert’s children Robert Jr. and Michelle are now working in the family business. “It’s amazing how life has come full circle.” Robert says. “I’m now taking the same commute with my kids as I took as a kid.” He smiles and continues, “We’re home.” Leaving Little Falls in 1983 to expand into being inhouse caterers at several facilities, Frungillo Caterers’ headquarters ultimately settled at The Villa in Mountain Lakes in the early 2000’s. Unexpectedly, an offer to purchase the venue was presented last year and Robert decided it was time to move on. Just as surprising as the sale, the opportunity to purchase Victor’s Chateau in Little Falls came up. Robert recalls the only time he had
52

been in the building before then was New Year’s Eve 29 years ago. This event is etched into his mind because that was the site of his first date with his now-wife, Lisa. Some would call it kismet that Frungillo Caterers is now headquartered there. Newly-dubbed The Falls, Frungillo Caterers has renovated two of the three ballrooms since taking ownership in November 2016. The last ballroom will be remodeled soon. The facility now accommodates parties from ten to 260 (with dancing), 300 (seated) or 400 (cocktail reception using entire building); all with the Frungillo touch. Growing up in the catering business, the brothers internalized their father’s vision for hospitality and their mother’s passion for culinary arts. Even though they have catered events for celebrities and dignitaries, Robert derives the most pleasure from working with “the local client.” Recognizing this is their client’s vision, Frungillo Caterers goes above and beyond. “Making dreams come true every day is so exciting,” he says with a gleam in his eye.
Clearly, the Frungillo brothers never lost their sense of being a part of a family business. Calling his team “dedicated and passionate,” Robert notes that they “really are a family,” celebrating weddings, funerals and holidays together. The culinary crew has been with them for an average of 20 years, with many staff logging in 30 to 40 years. Newer members, led by Robert’s children, are bringing a new style to the caterer. Robert states, “This new vibe is bringing in an exciting energy that meshes perfectly with the culture.” Food is at the heart of Frungillo Caterers. The team constantly travels and researches the latest food trends. Four times a year, the culinary team goes into the test kitchen and, together with management, produces new menu items. They take what is hot and put the Frungillo twist on it. Frungillo Caterers has big plans for The Falls. Robert’s goal for the traditional banquet hall is to become the go-to place in Little Falls for weddings, school banquets, birthdays, showers and other special events. With a reasonably priced menu, they want to offer a place where Little Falls residents become family–an affordable place
to be comfortable and enjoy. They look forward to being embraced by Little Falls like when they were a small caterer back in the 1970’s. Robert recognizes that it was fate for Frungillo Caterers to return to Little Falls. “Through all of our company’s moves, we kept the same phone number. The exchange is original to Little Falls,” he says. In addition to The Falls, Frungillo Caterers owns and/ or operates The Asbury in Asbury Park, The Hangar in Fairfield, The Skylands Manor in Ringwood, The Oakeside Mansion in Bloomfield, The Mezzanine in Newark, The Inn at Millrace Pond in Hope, and also offer The Conservatory at the Sussex County Fairgrounds in Augusta, The Debary Inn in Summit, James Ward Mansion in Westfield, The Pond at Triplebrook in Blairstown, The Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel in Asbury Park, Ashton Farms in Califon and Taylor Pavilion in Belmar, House parties and Corporate events.

Catch the Buzz of 381 Main Bar & Grill By Rhonda L. Rivera, photography by Dan Epstein
L
ooking to find a local gathering spot that is more than a place to watch the game? Then look no further than 381 Main Bar & Grill, Little Falls’ own answer to Cheers. 381 Main boasts a casual atmosphere filled with “cool stuff,” as co-owner Steve Baskinger describes the bar that features surfboards and painted sharks hanging from the ceiling. Of course, flat-screen televisions blanket the walls and deliver all the sports games guests could want. But, the vibrant watering hole offers so much more. Many patrons head to 381 Main for the award-winning brick oven pizza, burgers, wings and delicious weekly specials. Baskinger’s “biggest bar in Little Falls” has an extensive beer selection, with choices of sixteen beers on tap and over forty brands of craft beer in addition to a full complement of liquors. And for the tech junkies, both the bar and tables have USB charging stations. Moreover, the patio is open nearly year round –
decorated with palm trees during the summer and a roaring fire pit in cooler temperatures. The outside area is even dog-friendly, with the staff providing Fido a bowl of water and a friendly pat on the head. 381 Main does not rest on laurels with top-notch food, drink and sports, however. Weekly events and entertainment keep its regulars returning. “No night is ever the same,” notes Baskinger with pride. From Meet the Brewery Tuesdays to bingo, DJ nights, internet juke box and NJ Lottery’s Quick-Draw (kenostyle game), the hot spot is always fresh and new. Not to mention the excitement when local musicians and sports figures from the Giants, Jets or Yankees drop-in.
Baskinger and his wife, Sandi, changed 381 Main from a martini bar to the eclectic sports bar back in 2010, and have never looked back. Notably, when they did the five-month renovation, the pair only hired local contractors. A sentiment that seems appropriate for this neighborhood haunt. The Baskingers also own Bask Bar & Grill in Woodland Park. 381 Main will celebrate seven years serving Little Falls in November.

The Fine Grind and Coffee Shop Culture It’s All About Community By Tonya Johnson, photography by Dan Epstein

honda Mallek and her husband, Jon, have always had a thing for coffee, but it was the coffee shop culture and atmosphere that appealed to them most. For years, they visited numerous coffeehouses taking mental notes about things they liked and disliked about them. When the opportunity arose to purchase a coffee shop that was closing in the area, they took a leap of faith and walked out with the deal. The Fine Grind-A Coffee Bar, launched in 2005 and has grown into a community hub, an ad hoc office for people to start their workday and do homework, a place for friends, seniors, stay at home parents, busy professionals, hungry students and anyone else in the community looking for a friendly place to eat, drink, congregate and relax. Free Wi-Fi, friendly table service, live entertainment, and rotating art galleries are provided regularly. The Fro-Ho®, a frozen hot chocolate, and the Vanilla Snuggle latte— “a hug in a mug”—are signature drinks. The shop is known for its gluten-free, vegan and allergy sensitive choices. “When people come in here, it’s like they’re coming into my home. I just want to give them yummy treats and

A Fun & Intriguing Take on Tacos By Terry Kongold
A
Taco Affair, which opened June 1st, has been going gangbusters since day one. Culinary Institute of America (CIA)-trained chef/owner, Jessica Phillips, has been pleasantly surprised at the enthusiastic reception they have received. On opening day, her hardworking staff of just four cranked out 1,000 tacos!
Jessica Phillips
Jessica takes her love of Spanish food and culture and mixes it up in unique taco combinations such as the Jamaican jerk, the Cajun Po Boy, and the Korean BBQ. Her passion for spicy peppers, spices, and citrus shows through in all of her creations. A definite standout was the “Smoked Brisket” taco. Jessica smokes the brisket in-house and adds coleslaw and crispy red onions. A vegetarian Quinoa and Bean Fritter with chunky tomato and avocado salad is also available. There are a number of fun side dishes, such as Mexican Street Corn, Beef Brisket Pinto Beans, and Carolina Green Rice. One that this writer has never seen anywhere else was the Buttermilk Fried Avocado with Chipotle Aioli. The crunchy coating enveloping the creamy avocado with the spicy aioli was a big hit. Chef Jessica’s philosophy: “We love what we’re doing, we want to provide awesome quality, we want people to smile and be happy. Come in, get to know the staff, me, the community.”

Neopolitan Pizza Cooked to Perfection By Terry Krongold
Y
ou might say that Jerry Arcieri has an obsession with pizza. While working full-time in the photo industry, he earned a culinary certificate at ICE in Manhattan and then interned at Amano Pizza in Ridgewood. While his stint at Amano gave him valuable insights learning from a master pizzaiolo, he needed daily hands-on practice. So he did what any pizza-obsessed person might do, he built a wood-burning pizza oven in his backyard. He developed his own dough formulation and then to perfect his craft, he held “pizza parties” every weekend for a few lucky friends. He finally fulfilled his dream by opening Aquila in December 2015. Aquila offers 5-6 Neopolitan pizzas, such as Margherita, Funghi, and Bianca, in addition to 1-2 special pies each week, all prepared with house-made mozzarella—all are handmade and baked in a wood-fired oven. Also available is an antipasto of imported Italian salumi, cheeses, olives and pepperoncini. When asked about the restaurant name, he shared the fact that many years ago, the building where Aquila is housed was home to the Eagle Hotel. In Italian, Aquila translates to “eagle.” Jerry decided to named his pizzeria after the hotel, which is fitting because it sounds like Aquila will be flying high for the next few years.

The Kitch—Offering Two Dining Experiences By Terry Kongold, photography by Dan Epstein
J
oe Swanson, the owner of The Kitch, and a graduate of the Culinary Insitute of America (CIA), sees his restaurant’s mission as providing a warm, welcoming place for the community. He believes his restaurant fills a need by serving fresh, healthy ingredients at a good price point. The restaurant, which just celebrated its first anniversary, offers Italian-American classics, albeit with a subtle twist, such as Garlic Bread with Gorgonzola Fondue Dipping Sauce, or Vodka Fries with vodka sauce and mozzarella. The Kitch is really two restaurants: a casual side where customers can run in for a sandwich or a slice of classic Neapolitan pizza; and a white tablecloth dining room where you can enjoy a leisurely dinner. Open every day, the BYO restaurant offers a $7.99 lunch special, local delivery, catering, and the dining room can host private parties up to 60 people.
