Living with peripheral neuropathy can be a challenge, marked by shooting pain, numbness, discomfort in hands and feet, and limited options for relief. However, there’s a beacon of hope in the comprehensive approach offered by Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM, LAc, and her cutting-edge clinic. The time-proven ancient science of acupuncture is combined with modern, noninvasive technological advancements of ATP BioResonance therapy, ozone insufflation, and LED light therapy. Dr. Aleksandra combines these modalities into individualized treatments to provide not just symptomatic relief but a pathway to regenerate damaged nerves, leading to improved quality of life, especially for those who feel they’ve exhausted other avenues.

Acupuncture: Ancient Wisdom

Meets Modern Precision

Acupuncture, a staple in traditional medicine, is reimagined under Dr. Aleksandra’s expert hands. Her technique, tailored to combat nerve pain, involves precise needle placements that help revitalize nerve function and enhance blood flow. This ancient practice is backed by modern research, highlighting its effectiveness in reducing pain and inflammation associated with neuropathy.

ATP BioResonance Therapy:

Targeted Healing Frequencies

ATP BioResonance Therapy offers a noninvasive solution that utilizes specific frequencies to address the underlying causes of nerve pain. Dr. Aleksandra’s personalized ATP BioResonance protocols are designed to target the unique frequency needs of neuropathic conditions, promoting nerve repair and pain relief. Patients report significant improvements in sensation and mobility, often within just a few sessions.

O3 Insufflation:

A Breath of Fresh Air for Your Nerves

Ozone therapy is another cornerstone of Dr. Aleksandra’s approach. By safely administering ozone via ear insufflation, this therapy enhances oxygen utilization in the body, which is crucial for healing damaged tissues and alleviating pain. Ozone insufflation has shown promising results in improving overall cellular function and reducing symptoms of neuropathy.

LED Therapy:

Lighting the Way to Recovery

Adding another dimension to her comprehensive treatment portfolio, Dr. Aleksandra incorporates Celluma LED therapy, renowned for its role in promoting angiogenesis and pain relief. This innovative therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to penetrate the skin, stimulating the natural healing processes at the cellular level. The light emitted by the Celluma device encourages the formation of new capillaries, enhancing blood flow to the affected areas. This not only helps to nourish tissues and remove waste products but also accelerates repair and relieves pain. Patients undergoing Celluma LED therapy in conjunction with Dr. Aleksandra’s other treatments often report faster recovery times.

TRANSFORMATIVE PATIENT SUCCESS STORIES

Chemotherapy-Induced Neuropathy:

James, a 58-year-old former cancer patient, struggled with debilitating neuropathy after his chemotherapy regimen. His feet hurt all the time and the loss of nerve function in his right foot resulted in drop foot and extreme difficulty walking. Traditional medications provided little relief, and the persistent pain began affecting his daily life. After beginning a combined treatment of acupuncture, ATP BioResonance therapy, and O3 Insufflation with Dr. Aleksandra, James noticed a remarkable reduction in pain and a significant restoration of feeling in his feet and hands. After about 4 months, his right foot regained its function and James was able to walk normally, a truly miraculous outcome.

Diabetic Neuropathy:

Maria, a 65-year-old with long-standing diabetes, faced severe neuropathic pain that made walking difficult. Her treatment regimen at Dr. Aleksandra’s clinic included ozone insufflation alongside acupuncture and LED light therapy. Within weeks, Maria experienced a dramatic decrease in pain and better walking ability, leading to a much-

improved daily functionality and independence. She was able to go on a family trip to Italy and walk longer than ever before, only occasionally needing her cane.

Idiopathic Neuropathy:

Tom, aged 72, suffered from neuropathy of unknown origin. His mysterious condition left many doctors puzzled, but Dr. Aleksandra’s holistic approach offered new hope. Through targeted ATP BioResonance Therapy and regular ozone treatments, Tom regained much of the sensation he had lost and significantly reduced his pain levels.

Green Legacy: A Tale of Environmental Inspiration

Ethan Wong, 9, his grandfather, Harold Stein, and brother Felix Wong, 6, with their book, “Plastic Bags In Trees.“

Aplastic bag stuck in a tree outside their window sparked a big idea in the young minds of Montclair residents Ethan Wong, 9, and his brother Felix, 6. It led them to write a book, with the help of their grandfather, Harold Stein, called, “Plastic Bags In Trees,” which raises awareness about the impact of plastic waste on the environment, and how to take action.

The book, a blend of realism and fiction, tells the story of how the boys noticed the plastic bag in the tree and, with their grandfather’s guidance, came up with creative ideas to remove it. From climbing on giraffes to flying helicopters, their imaginative solutions highlight the importance of finding innovative ways to tackle environmental challenges.

Their story reminds us that no matter how small our actions may seem, they can have a big impact on the planet for future generations.

The book is available on Barnes and Noble and Amazon.

Living a Father’s Dreams: A Journey of Adventure and Discovery

Thirteen years after her father’s death in a car crash when she was 25, Laura Carney unearthed a bucket list chronicling his unrealized dreams, penned when he was 29. This discovery fueled Laura’s resolve to live more deliberately and fulfill his unmet aspirations through a six-year quest.

From attending sporting events to traveling and attempting activities she never thought possible, Laura embraced each experience with determination. Through these adventures, she found healing and a renewed connection to her father’s spirit.

Inspired by her journey, Laura wrote, “My Father’s List: How Living My Dad’s Dreams Set Me Free.” Now, the Montclair resident looks ahead to finishing her own bucket list, filled with gratitude for the transformative impact her father’s dreams had on her life. His spirit lives on in her, inspiring her to dream big and live life to the fullest.

The book is available wherever books are sold.

Podcast Reflections: Celebrating Father/Daughter Relationships

Father and daughter, George and Jill Ruthauser of Cedar Grove, are co-hosts of “Talks To-Go,” a podcast about dad-daughter relationships they started following Jill’s college podcasting days.

“We started off discussing ‘The Bachelor,’ but eventually rebranded to focus on the special bond between dads and daughters,” Jill says. “It’s been a wonderful journey.”

Talks To-Go, available on Apple Podcasts and Spotify, covers topics ranging from pop culture to sports to “Obsessions of the Week” and also features interviews with celebrity father-daughter duos.

The podcast has been running for a year

and a half with new episodes released every Wednesday. George and Jill find that the podcast has added a new dimension to their relationship. “We’ve had the opportunity to have conversations we might not have had and so have our guests,” George says.

“I think we really touch people with our podcast,” Jill adds.

Talks To-Go can be found on Instagram @talkstogopodcast and on TikTok @ talkstogood.

Preserving Goodness: A Homemade Jam Success Story

Erica Goldring, hailing from Livingston, has transformed her passion for healthy eating into a thriving jam enterprise known as ComboJams, whole-fruit low-sugar jams with hidden veggies.

Driven by a desire to create a nutritious and delightful alternative to traditional jams, Erica began experimenting with recipes in her home kitchen. After much trial and error, she crafted her inaugural flavor, Blueberry Spinach “Spinberry,” which artfully blends up blueberries with hidden steamed baby spinach for an enhanced nutritional value at only 2.5 grams of sugar per tablespoon, a fraction of the sugar in traditional jams and jellies.

ComboJams recently graduated from Erica’s home kitchen in Livingston to production at Garden State Kitchen, a commercial kitchen incubator in Orange. In addition to its Spinberry flavor, ComboJams also offers Strawberry Beet “Beetberry,” and Pineapple Carrot “Tropicarrot” varieties.

ComboJams will be gracing the tables of local events and markets this summer, including the Walnut Street Fair in Montclair, and Chatham and Summit Farmers Markets. It is also available for online purchase.

For more information, visit: combojams.com or @combojams on Instagram.

A New Speedy Varsity Sport Hits Livingston High School

Nate Black, a rising sophomore at Livingston High School (LHS), has been honing his ski racing skills in Vermont for years, often racing against some of the best in the world. Inspired by the competitive ski racing scene there, Nate took the initiative to bring the Alpine Ski Racing team to LHS.

“During the summer, I was unsure if this was even possible but with the help of the athletic director and his assistant, the dream and team became a reality,” says Nate.

Sammy Kritzer, another rising sophomore on the team, joined Nate as co-captain for the inaugural season. The team has shown promise and is determined to qualify for States next year. Dedicated to Finding a Cure A Father’s Journey After Loss

IIn 1996, Scott Foster, a Livingston resident, embarked on a journey that would shape the lives of many. After his son, Justin, passed away from neuroblastoma at the tender age of four, Scott felt compelled to turn his grief into something positive. He teamed up with a friend, a concert promoter, who suggested they start a foundation to help with the financial burdens faced by families dealing with lifethreatening diseases. Thus, Justin’s Wish was born.

Justin’s Wish is a national non-profit foundation focused on education, awareness, and continuing medical education for childhood cancer. One of its core missions is to provide scholarships to students in the medical field, with a specific concentration in pediatric oncology. These scholarships aim to support young adults who are currently enrolled in medical school and wish to pursue a career in childhood cancer research, treatment, or care.

“We hope that by funding education for the younger generation, they will eventually discover a cure for childhood cancer,” Scott explains.

To raise funds for their cause, Justin’s Wish organizes various fundraising events throughout the year. One of the upcoming events is a disco night fundraiser in June at Hemingway’s in Seaside Heights, hosted by Hot Night Events. Scott hopes to raise $10,000 through this event, which will contribute to the foundation’s ongoing efforts to support childhood cancer research and education.

Scott’s dedication to honoring his son’s memory and helping others is truly inspiring. Through Justin’s Wish, he has turned tragedy into a beacon of hope for families and children battling cancer.

For details about the fundraiser or to donate, send an email to scott.foster@justin-scancer.org. Every contribution helps get closer to finding a cure for childhood cancer and fulfilling Justin’s wish of making a difference in the world.

SEEKING ROOTS A Journey of Discovery and Advocacy

At the age of 30, Donna Marvin-Platt from Glen Ridge discovered that she was donor-conceived on her paternal side. While this revelation explained her feelings of isolation and being different from her family during her upbringing, it also sparked a journey of self-discovery she never anticipated.

Donna spent the next 23 years searching for her biological father. She encapsulated her quest into a documentary film called Missed Conceptions, which aired on PBS in March 2024 and continues to stream on the PBS app. Her film, more than a personal project, serves as a tool for advocacy and education. By sharing her story, Donna aims to encourage others in similar situations to seek out their biological relatives and advocate for changes in laws to protect the rights of donor-conceived individuals.

At the outset, Donna’s only lead was that her father was a Jewish medical student. She first tried the Donor Sibling Registry, which aims to unite donor offspring with their donor parent(s), however, after 20 years, raising two children, and both of her parents deceased, Donna still had no answers. She not only wanted to know about her heritage and medical history, but also desired this knowledge for her children.

Facing initial challenges in her search, the emergence of commercial DNA testing services like Ancestry.com and 23andMe

provided Donna with a breakthrough. Utilizing these platforms, she connected with a relative who eventually led her to the identity of her father, extended family, and friends. Through these connections, Donna pieced together her father’s life and learned about his character, providing her with a sense of closure and connection to a man she never met.

She leaned that her father had died at the age of 61, was an accomplished doctor and a devoted humanitarian, and, like Donna, was an artist. Throughout the film, Donna is seen creating a large painting of her father, a process that parallels her journey until its completion at the end.

The discovery of four half-sisters with whom Donna has formed meaningful relationships, and a half-brother she has yet to meet, added new layers to Donna’s story. Some of her half-sisters were unaware of their donorconceived origins until Donna contacted them. This highlighted the complex web of emotions and dynamics that accompanied such revelations within families at that time regarding donor conception.

Donna’s journey inspired her to create a documentary film, not only to share her story but also to advocate for others in similar situations. Through her film, she hopes to raise awareness about the emotional and psychological aspects of donor conception, emphasizing the importance of knowing one’s biological origins and advocating for changes in laws and regulations surrounding donor conception.

Her story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of knowing one’s roots. Her journey of selfdiscovery not only brought her closer to her father but is also providing her with a platform to advocate for others in similar situations, ensuring that their voices are heard, and their stories are told.

Missed Conceptions can be viewed at pbs.org/video/missed-conceptionsh4xqvf/.

Creating Memorable Travel Experiences

EEight years ago, Kimberly Anwar, a mother of three young boys, had a demanding career in international business. Seeking a change to allow her to achieve work/life balance along with her passion for travel, she took a leap of faith and established her travel agency, Magic Family Getaways.

How did you establish Magic Getaways?

I recognized that people who planned complicated vacations needed help. I educated myself on the many aspects of travel planning, including obtaining all travel licenses and chose to focus on Disney Destinations first and foremost. I believe Disney delivers the highest level of entertainment and service for family travel.

Disney vacations provided my family with the level of service, safety, and memorable experiences; I instantly knew it was going to be the focus of the company. This all made up the foundation on how Magic Family Getaways began in late 2016.

Despite the challenges posed by the Pandemic, during that time I worked hard to establish a full-service travel agency focusing on family and luxury travel. I fostered relations with vendors and suppliers, including Disney, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, Sandals and Beaches, Universal Orlando, Hyatt, Marriott, and other leading all-inclusive resorts. Today, Magic Family Getaways is a premier award-winning travel agency offering a wide range of destinations and a team of forty travel advisors nationwide, ready to make clients’ dreams come true.

Why should people use the Magic Family Getaways travel advisors?

At Magic Family Getaways, we go beyond just planning vacations; we craft unique experiences. Our travel advisors have cultivated strong relationships not only with our clients but also with our suppliers. This unique network

allows us to help people choose their dream destinations within their budget. Additionally, we often have access to exclusive agency booking offers and special rates unavailable to the public, making our service a smart and costeffective choice for our clients.

When our clients embark on their vacations, they do so with the confidence that their trip has been meticulously planned. You receive access to one of our professional travel advisors, who not only assists with the planning but takes the overwhelm away. Not only can a travel advisor give you advice from research and training, but they also can speak from first-hand experience traveling to the destinations you are planning. Our aim is to assist you in saving time and effort by providing impartial, professional guidance to ensure you and your loved ones create lasting memories during your vacation.

Magic Family Getaways LLC is a local, family owned, full-service travel agency specializing in family travel with strong expertise in cruises, all-inclusive vacations, guided tours, and all Disney destinations worldwide.

A Frontline Hero’s Fight

Nurse Battling Cancer Finds Strength in Community Support

MMarti Carlos, a devoted nurse at the Job Haines Home in Bloomfield, was stricken with a serious cancer diagnosis in January 2023 that turned his life upside down. He was diagnosed with metastatic stage 4 cancer after an MRI showed a tumor on his lower spine. The diagnosis was a shock to him, his family, and his co-workers. Marti has been a devoted RN at Job Haines Home for the past five years. During the worst days of the COVID-19 pandemic, he made sure the patients in the home’s sub-acute unit remained safe and well cared for with his trademark smile, comforting presence, and excellent nursing care.

“I had been dealing with progressively worsening back pain for months, to the point where I was having trouble walking and standing, but I forced myself to go to work,” said Marti, who never complained to anyone about his discomfort or concerns as he sought medical attention.

Marti had urgent surgery to remove the tumor, followed by a series of radiation treatments, as the advanced cancer had spread throughout his pelvic region

and damaged his spine. He remains on medication to control the cancer as he and his doctors monitor his condition and long-term prognosis.

Although the situation seemed very dim at the time, there is a silver lining to his story. As soon as his Job Haines family heard about Marti’s health crisis they jumped into action. A friend and coworker, Michelle Capistrano immediately set up a GoFundMe page to support Marti during his treatment and recovery, to raise funds for Marti’s significant outof-pocket medical expenses and to ease his living expenses while he recuperated.

“Marti was a true healthcare hero during the pandemic and he is a shining light for everyone at Job Haines,” said Michelle. “We knew we had to support this frontline hero while he went through this very difficult time of his life.”

Marti said the fundraising effort was so unexpected, but very deeply appreciated. “I told everyone that prayers would be enough, but the unexpected support and love poured in, and it truly touched my heart. It helped

pay for my uncovered medical expenses, and with being out of work for a year, I had so much less stress about paying my living expenses.”

After more than 13 months since his life-changing medical crisis, he returned to work in early March on a part-time schedule as he regains his strength and mobility. It took him five or six months before he could walk unassisted and today, Marti said he’s back to walking and still doing physical therapy to build up his core strength.

“By the grace of God, the cancer is dormant and I’m back to work. I can never thank my Job Haines family and the surrounding community enough for all the love and financial support they gave me, along with all the prayers they sent my way. We are truly a family here and their care was an essential part of my recovery. I hope to pay this act of kindness forward one day soon.”

Personal and Precious

Walter Bauman Jewelers is a Gem in Estate Jewelry

FFrom its founding in 1868, through five generations. Walter Bauman Jewelers has prided itself on an unmatched collection of jewelry, coupled with superb customer service. Today, this generation’s Walter Bauman, who owns the business with his brother, Russell, notes that the company has become known for specialization in buying and selling estate jewelry.

“People know to come to us. We will make them a great offer, whether it’s a Rolex watch, a Cartier love bracelet, or an antique engagement ring,” he said. “If it’s fine jewelry, we can find a home for it.” This includes pieces ranging from $50 to $300,000, which are inspected, appraised, in many cases restored, and reinspected. Right now, jewelry and watches from Cartier, Rolex, David Yurman, and Tiffany & Co. are in great demand.

“It’s important to emphasize how many experts touch each piece,” said Bauman. The company employs five graduates of the Gemological Institute of America. “We warranty all our pieces,” he said.

The company also specializes in custom design, updating and refurbishing older pieces a customer may have inherited, using the precious metals and gems to retain family history, while creating a modern, wearable treasure.

Walter Bauman Jewelers has been named “Best of Essex” multiple times, and its, “We are your personal jeweler,” philosophy is a big part of the reason. Some staff members have been with the company for over 40 years. “We are committed to taking the very best care of our customers, many of whom are now also our friends,” said Bauman.

AMY WAX

Returns to a Love of Portraiture

AND PORTRAIT

IIt’s probably hard to find a local resident who hasn’t seen her lawn signs. She’s a color consultant with a national reputation. But it’s her pastel portraits that draw our attention today. West Orange resident Amy Wax can’t remember not drawing, even as a child. She always wanted to be an artist. And she loved making portraits. “Portraiture is one of the oldest art forms,” she says, and “portraits become part of a family’s history.”

Even as a high school student, she was receiving commissions for her portraiture, and at 15 had an exhibit in the New Providence post office where she grew up. Attending Syracuse University as an Illustration Major, she refined her skills and afterward, became a freelance illustrator, working on album covers, and magazine illustrations. In 1983 she got a job as an

Young Girl

Art Director at NBC and pursued that for 30 years. Always the go-to person amongst her family and friends as the “What Color Should I Paint My House” expert, upon leaving NBC she opened Your Color Source, a color consulting firm now recognized by Benjamin Moore and sought out by numerous shelter publications.

Two years ago, her love of portraiture once again reared its head, and she began drawing portraits in earnest.

Young Girl, a 14x19 pastel pencil drawing on toned paper, was one of the first in her re-embracing of portraiture and was drawn using a stock photo image as inspiration. Wax loved the casual attitude of the child’s posture and the un-posed quality of the image.

Having lunch in one of her favorite restaurants, Wax met a server who seemed, “to just light up the room.” Quickly making a photograph of the woman, she later drew Hobby Server, an 11x14 pastel pencil drawing. Note not only the remarkable attention to detail and exquisite rendering of light effect but also how Wax manages to relate the exuberance of the subject.

Lewis is also an 11x14 pastel pencil drawing on toned paper. Her brother-inlaw, photographed by Wax in a casual moment over lunch, which she translates into an incredibly tender portrait of a man with remarkably kind eyes who seems totally engaged with the viewer. Wax has masterfully separated the subject from the ground through the use of color as he pops off of the page.

Finally, Friend In Shades, like the rest, an 11x14 pastel drawing was created from a selfie her friend posted on Facebook. She likes to think it portrays his casual sense of humor and when completed said “it felt like I was standing right in front of him”.

Constantly asked if she will accept portrait commissions, she says she’s too busy being a color expert to accept any. “But,” she says, “you never know.” More of her amazing work can be seen on her website and Instagram.

ENJOY Your Own Personal OASIS

A Family Business Focused on Outdoor Living at Its Best

When Rich Cording, Sr. founded his own lawn care business in 1973, he never dreamed that 50 years later it would be so successful. Today, CLC Landscape Design has over 100 employees, and Rich is a licensed landscape architect, a certified landscape nursery professional and a specialist in designing and installing rain gardens and water gardens.

Enjoy Your Own Personal Oasis

(continued from the previous page)

While he and his crew create beautiful designs and build walls, patios, pools, outdoor kitchens, and whatever else homeowners desire, what truly excites Rich is helping others, and that includes both clients and staff. Some of his employees have been with him from the very beginning.

“I look at myself as a symphony director,” he says. “I have people who love designing, love building or love sales. My job is to empower them, and their job is to do impeccable work.”

CLC focuses only on designing great outdoor living spaces. “We don’t do lawn cutting, maintenance or sprinkler systems,” says Rich. “We design and build. One of our other specialties is planting designs and layouts. It’s a very unique niche that we’ve carved out.”

Everyone in the company follows five core values: Service, Knowledge, Honesty, Synergy, and the Golden Rule – treat others the way you want to be treated.

The heartfelt reviews from clients motivate Rich to keep his standards high. He received a voicemail two years ago that he still has in his mailbox. “I hadn’t seen this client in 13 years, and she said, ‘Rich, I’m sitting in my backyard and want to let you know how much happiness you brought me and my children. They grew up in this pool and backyard and now I’m sitting here with my grandchildren. I can’t thank you enough.’”

Another thing Rich never expected was to have two of his four children working alongside him. “Like me, they both graduated from college,” he says. “Neither one wanted to be part of this. Most people don’t know that I went to school to be a teacher, or that my son Rich Jr. was a Navy officer and in charge of 20 men on the USS John S. McCain.”

Today, Rich Jr. runs the construction division of CLC and has a Master of Landscape Design from Colombia University. His other son, Eric, earned a Landscape Design Certificate from Rutgers University, and for the last few years has been in charge of sales and designs.

“We all love what we do and because of that, we always do the absolute best that we can,” says Rich Sr. “Our family looks forward to working with your family.”

Retirement Planning A LIFELONG INVESTMENT

PPatrick McCahill, a seasoned Certified Financial Planner™, maintains that retirement planning is a lifelong investment. Drawing from his extensive experience as a Wealth Advisor at Egan Wealth Advisors, a Registered Investment Advisory firm in Madison, New Jersey, McCahill shares his retirement planning insights on financial security.

When should people begin to plan for retirement?

Before starting to plan for retirement, it is important to establish a solid foundation of Financial Planning. This foundation encompasses essential aspects of life planning: estate planning, which determines the distribution of your assets after your passing; health care planning, which guarantees you have the necessary medical coverage; life insurance, which offers financial protection to your loved ones in the event of your death; emergency funds, which provide for unexpected occurrences; and budget/ monthly expenses, which aids in managing your expenses and income. We work with clients on this foundational plan and we collaborate with clients to develop comprehensive, long-term retirement strategies, providing security and peace of mind, building deep meaningful relationships with the clients we serve.

What are some simple but effective retirement planning strategies?

People should consider which retirement plans are available and discuss appropriate plans with an advisor, such as 401(k)s, SEP-IRAs, and IRA. After determining which plans are best for them, clients should review the provisions of each, such as yearly contributions, and look at long-term investment strategies, distribution requirements, and tax-deferred advantages.

Why is it crucial to consult a CFP® for your retirement planning?

When seeking professional advice for your retirement planning, collaborating with a CFP® is beneficial. A significant advantage of working with a CFP® is their fiduciary outlook, which legally binds them to always act in the client’s best interests. This ensures that clients are well informed and empowered in their retirement planning.

What are the key pitfalls to avoid in your retirement planning journey?

Clients should consider working with a CFP® at different life stages. We often encounter clients with inadequate financial plans or those approaching us, typically prompted by life events. Clients feel in control of their financial well-being by initiating retirement planning early, establishing a strong economic foundation, and consistently reviewing their plans throughout their lives.

A Family Focus Mediating Conflicts with Creative Ideas and Solutions

WWith a prestigious background that includes being named to the Super Lawyers List year after year and holding an MBA on top of her law degree, Melissa Cipriano is a seasoned family attorney who founded Cipriano Law Offices in 2003.

Her focus is on helping parents and children get through tumultuous situations as smoothly as possible. As a child of divorce and having been through a divorce herself, she knows how traumatic it can be. As a mom of two children, she also understands that the less contentious the divorce, the easier it is for the kids.

“I’m a mediator, and in that role, I help people come to a resolution by giving them creative ideas,” says Melissa. “I also inform them of the law and what would or could happen if they go to court.”

She’s also a parenting coordinator. “I assist in resolving issues such as where to pick up and drop off children, whether a child should join soccer in dad’s town or mom’s town or somewhere in between, or what to do when a child isn’t doing well in school and needs a tutor.”

All of the attorneys in her firm have children, and almost all are mediators too. So, when an issue arises that has to be resolved immediately, instead of having to wait a while for a court date, Melissa and her staff make themselves available to get it figured out as quickly as possible.

“We always make time for our clients,” she says.

Maintaining Healthy Skin

TTo keep your skin healthy, adhering to a consistent skincare regimen is crucial. This means starting your day and ending your day with a gentle cleansing routine using a mild cleanser to remove impurities, excess oil, and makeup. Following cleansing, applying a suitable moisturizer tailored to your skin type helps to maintain optimal hydration and promote a smooth, supple complexion. Sun protection is another essential step, so it’s vital to apply sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 daily to shield your skin from the damaging effects of UV rays.

Alongside the fundamental skincare routine, regular exfoliation is beneficial for sloughing off dead skin cells and maintaining a radiant appearance. The frequency of exfoliation can range from 1 to 3 times a week, depending on your skin type and the exfoliating product used.

Incorporating healthy lifestyle practices also plays a significant role in promoting skin health. Adequate hydration, achieved through drinking plenty of water, is essential for maintaining skin’s moisture levels. A well-rounded diet, rich in various fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins, contributes to overall skin health. Sufficient sleep and stress management are equally important for healthy skin. Lastly, steering clear of smoking and moderating alcohol consumption can further support the maintenance of skin health.

Essential Tips for Sunburn Prevention

AAs the weather gets warmer and the sun shines brighter, it's important to take steps to protect yourself from sunburn. Sunburn not only causes discomfort, but it can also lead to long-term skin damage and increase the risk of skin cancer. Here are some simple rules to help you stay safe in the sun:

Wear Sunscreen

Apply sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher at least 15 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours, or more often if you're swimming or sweating.

Seek Shade

When the sun is at its strongest, usually between 10am and 4pm, try to stay in the shade as much as possible. This can help reduce your overall sun exposure and lower your risk of sunburn.Wear Protective Clothing: Cover up with clothing, hats, and sunglasses to shield your skin from the sun's harmful rays. Lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and pants can provide excellent protection.

Be Sun-Smart

Be mindful of reflective surfaces like water, sand, and snow, which can intensify the sun's rays and increase the likelihood of sunburn. Take extra precautions in these environments.

Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water, especially when spending time outdoors in the sun. Staying hydrated can help your body regulate its temperature and minimize the risk of heat-related illnesses.

By following these simple rules, you can enjoy the sunshine while minimizing the risk of sunburn and long-term skin damage. Remember, it's important to take sun protection seriously and make it a part of your daily routine, not just on sunny days at the beach. Your skin will thank you for it in the years to come.

POURING HOPE

CHOP Lemonade Stand Fundraiser Extends Through June

WWhen Nicole and Bob Gizzi were pregnant with their daughter Marisa, they received troubling news at their 20week doctor visit. Marisa was diagnosed with several health issues, including choroid plexus cysts in her brain, a CPAM on her lung, and traces of Trisomy 20. Despite medical recommendations for termination, Marisa’s parents chose to continue with the pregnancy. With the support of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), Marisa defied the odds and has grown into a vibrant child.

Now, at 4 years old, Marisa has become an ambassador for CHOP, raising awareness and funds for the hospital

through events like the family’s annual lemonade stand fundraiser. Last year, the Gizzis raised almost $4,000 through the lemonade stand and the CHOP 31-Day Challenge. This year, their goal is to raise at least $5,000, with donations coming in from people from every US state.

The Gizzi family’s lemonade stand may have wrapped up, but the spirit of giving is still going strong, and they are keeping the fundraising spirit alive. Donations will be collected through the end of June, with the goal of making a significant impact on the lives of children and families in need. For more information and to donate visit: linktr.ee/Nicolegizzi

At Cedar Grove Foot & Ankle Specialists, we provide innovative and compassionate care to get our patients back on their feet.

Josh Baskies of Livingston is on a mission to spread smiles and joy to pediatric cancer patients through his second annual toy drive. Inspired by the memory of his cousin Maddie Kramer, who passed away at the age of 3, Josh is partnering with the Dancing While Cancering foundation, established by his aunt and uncle in Maddie’s honor. The foundation’s goal is to bring happiness to children undergoing cancer treatments by providing them with smile packs filled with toys.

Here’s how you can join the fun: Send an email to Josh to receive a link to the Amazon Wishlist, curated by the foundation and purchase toys to be shipped directly to Josh’s house. Once the drive concludes, Josh will send all the toys to C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Michigan, where they will bring joy via smile packs, including toys, to young patients during their hospital stays.

Let’s help Josh honor Maddie’s memory in the most cheerful way possible! Your contribution, no matter how big or small, will make a huge difference in brightening the days of children battling cancer.

MONTCLAIR REJUVENATION CENTER

Providing Quality Aesthetic Services with a Personal Touch

Dr. Kelly DiStefano’s mission at Montclair Rejuvenation Center (MRC) is to help her patients look and feel their best through all life stages and provide affordable aesthetics to our community. “Clients choose MRC because of the family atmosphere in our offices. We use only the best products and devices at our practices and believe that patient knowledge and transparency are essential,” she states. She adds, “Our office staff makes everyone feel welcome at each visit!”

Dr. DiStefano feels that the practice of MRC is unique because they are able to provide quality, reliable services that are also affordable to the community. They have a positive reputation in the community, and strong patient loyalty. Her biggest tip for clients is “to make sure they are seeking aesthetic treatments for themselves, and to do what makes them happy. This helps patients feel comfortable, at ease, and positive about the overall experience. It is also never too late to start a medical-grade skincare routine, with SPF of course.”

“We are excited about growing the New Jersey businesses in 2024,” says Dr. DiStefano.” MRC has also expanded its brand with the addition of a 3rd location: Wellington Rejuvenation Center, a new spa located in Royal Palm Beach, Florida.

Dr. DiStefano describes her ‘real job’ as being a mother, wife, friend, and doctor. When she is not in the office, she spends time with her family and friends. I run a book club and enjoy staying active by exercising regularly. These activities keep my mind sharp and my body healthy. I also spend lots of time researching and expanding my knowledge of the latest trends in the aesthetics world.

G Your Child’s Gateway to a Healthy Smile

Give your child a fresh introduction to a healthy mouth at Fresh Pediatric Dentistry in Montclair. Dr. Reesha Shah recently established the practice in January 2024 and welcomes all young patients from one year through eighteen years.

Dr. Shah offers comprehensive services to maintain your young person’s optimal health. She provides preventative work such as cleanings, minimally invasive fillings, emergency dental care, and limited early orthodontics. She also provides laser frenectomies, or “tongue tie releases,” which resolve oral restrictions in newborns and infants.

At Fresh Pediatric, comprehensive oral health education is a cornerstone of their practice. Dr. Shah works closely with children and their parents to achieve this goal. She teaches the child and the parents how to brush and floss correctly, empowering them with the knowledge to maintain good oral health. “Most young patients cannot brush correctly until they are eight. The parents should help the youngsters correctly brush their teeth,” she says.

Another essential component of preventative education is the role of diet and nutrition in preventing dental decay. “I educate children and parents about diet modification to achieve optimal oral health. Common snacks such as crackers and chips can contribute to an increased risk for cavities,” she adds.

First visits to the dentist can be daunting for children, but Dr. Shah understands this and makes every effort to create a welcoming and inviting office. The space, designed by Dr. Shah herself, is vibrant and incorporates biophilic design principles –using soft colors and textures found in nature to create a sense of calmness and well-being. There is also a play area, reading nook, play kitchen set, and doctor and dentist kits for children waiting to see Dr. Shah.

Dr. Shah, accompanied by a stuffed animal, warmly greets each patient, and ensures ample time with each. As the sole practitioner, children get to know her and her stuffed animals, creating a fun, relaxed ambiance for the youngsters.

When asked why she chose the name “Fresh,” she replied, “The word fresh evokes a feeling of modern dentistry—clean, natural, and refreshing. It is also a play on words—a reminder of that fresh feeling after a dental cleaning.”

Living an Authentic Life

The Benefits of Gender-Affirmation Surgery

WWhen it comes to gender-affirmation surgery, Dr. Sean Herman can assist patients who want to go through the process of living as their authentic selves. “These surgeries are really unique and tailored to the patient in order to express their gender in a distinct way,” he says.

The first step, explains Dr. Herman, is figuring out what they’re most interested in doing and what’s potentially causing some sort of dysphoria. “Once we identify a potential surgical target, we can then discuss what options they have to hopefully remedy that situation.”

More often than not, he says, these surgeries tend to focus on the chest and facial features. These are areas they feel don’t fit with who they are inside, and they want to make them either more feminine or masculine.

“These are some of my most happy and appreciative patients,” says Dr. Herman. “I really enjoy working with this population.”

Creating Exceptional Aesthetics After Mastectomies

Innovative Surgical Techniques Combined with Personalized Care

DDr. Ann Chuang empowers women who go through mastectomies to come out of surgery feeling whole and confident. Her innovative and skillful surgical techniques enable her to do just that. Two of these techniques include hidden scar and nipple sparing. “Seeing scars can remind patients of the trauma they went through, and I want them to be able to move on, live their lives, and not be marked by it,” she says.

Breasts, explains Dr. Chuang, can be a major part of a woman’s identity, so it’s important to create an exceptional

aesthetic outcome. “Being able to keep the nipples makes the breast look more natural. Many women actually tell me they forget they’ve had surgery. It’s a great feeling.”

Dr. Chuang works alongside partnering plastic surgeons to help patients achieve the best possible outcome. “I have a very personal approach, emphasizing the quality of each patient’s care,” she says.

A True Family Orthodontic Practice

FFor many children, wearing braces can be an arduous rite of passage. However, for Livingston orthodontist, Dr. Gigi Paralkar, orthodontics was not only a positive experience but a transformative one.

She explains, “As a child, I desperately needed braces and knew it. I had a lot of orthodontic treatment, and it completely changed the way I looked and felt about myself. Years later I wanted to give others what I had.”

Dr. Paralkar also had a couple of powerful role models: “My father was a general dentist, and when I was young, I used to go to his office with him and watch him work. My own orthodontist was another inspiration; she was an Indian female, just like me.”

After unexpectedly losing her father in 2003, Dr. Paralkar, then a consultant

at IBM, decided to honor his legacy and pursue her own childhood dream. She excelled at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, was the chief resident at Rutgers Orthodontic program and has been in private practice since 2014.

Dr. Gigi, as she is known to her patients, prides herself on running a true family practice. She says that in addition to numerous sibling patients, “We have a lot of parents in braces or Invisalign alongside their kids. I also treat a lot of adults as more patients in their 50s, 60s, and 70s want to improve their smiles.”

Whatever their age, the initial consultation is followed by unrushed appointments and highly personalized treatment. Dr. Paralkar says, “We are not part of a corporate practice. My team includes Jenny at the front desk and my assistants Kim, Kiara, and Adela. As

a boutique practice, we really take the time to get to know all of our patients and they get to know us.”

Naturally, the practice keeps up with constantly changing technology.

Dr. Paralkar notes that she is continually enhancing her skills with continuing education. Examples of cutting-edge technology offered at Livingston Family Orthodontics include intra-oral scanning and offering Spark™ Aligners, which are even less visible than Invisalign.

Dr. Paralkar concludes, “I feel honored that patients have chosen to entrust their mouths to us, and blessed that I get to do a job that I love.”

PROGRESSIVE EYE CARE with Saras Rustagi, O.D.

WWhen Saras Rustagi, O.D., established his eyecare practice, he sought a small town with a vibrant community and a spirit of growth to call home for his new business. In 2007, he found that in Upper Montclair, a town that shared his vision of community, creativity, and progress. Since its inception and with two locations in Upper Montclair and Ridgewood, Upper Montclair Eye Care has become more than a provider of better vision and innovative practices. It has become a gateway for the community to unite and thrive through progressive eye care.

Upper Montclair Eye Care and Wear is a one-stop shop for complete eye care. In addition to medical treatment for most eye conditions, the store offers a variety of eyewear and contact lenses. Dr. Rustagi and his managers travel extensively to vision frame shows and other vendors to purchase the latest and most unique frames. In addition to numerous name brands, they carry Woody eyewear, known for its splashes of color and high quality, and Barton Perriera, also known for its innovative designs.

Upper Montclair Eye Care and Wear keeps pace with cutting-edge innovations and new practices as the town continues to blossom as an innovative and creative community. Dr. Rustagi utilizes Intense Pulse Light (IPL), the only FDA-approved therapy for dry eye treatment that is drug-free and drop-free. This is just one example of the innovative treatments they offer, always striving to provide the best for the community.

Interestingly, this light therapy led to another innovative treatment that has become immensely popular—Photo Rejuvenation. Photo Rejuvenation is an aspect of photo aesthetics that effectively treats rosacea, sunspots, and acne and tightens the skin. “Many patients notice the effects of this treatment after several weeks–from more moisture in the eyes to glowing skin,” says Dr. Rustagi.

Don’t

Let Foot or Ankle Pain

Stop You in Your Tracks

WWhen our feet and ankles hurt, carrying on with our everyday routines can be quite difficult. “Plus, when you have arthritis or tendonitis that’s flaring up, an ingrown toenail, or an ankle sprain, you’re missing out on activities you enjoy,” says Dr. Matthew Wachtler, a podiatrist with Cedar Grove Foot & Ankle Specialists.

The advantages of seeing someone who specializes in foot and ankle pain is that the problem may be identified sooner and therefore treated faster. “We can take an x-ray and interpret it the same day to get a diagnosis as quickly as possible,” he says. “Also, when we identify the issue in its earlier stages, it can not only heal faster, but patients then won’t have to deal with compensation injuries too.”

GGeorge Raptis, MD, MBA, a nationally-recognized breast cancer academic medical oncologist, is thrilled to join Cooperman Barnabas Cancer Center and the Rutgers Cancer Institute, New Jersey’s only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. As Director of Oncology Services for the Northern Region, he leads a team of medical oncologists and clinical researchers dedicated to providing personalized, high-quality, and innovative cancer care in the communities they serve.

A The Benefits of a Healthy Mouth

A beautiful smile makes an impression. RoseAnn Giannella, DMD, PA, makes that happen by maintaining or creating this most impressionable facial feature. Working with patients from ages three through adult in her dental practice in Essex County, Dr. Giannella is skilled in all regular procedures, cavity fillings, checkups, and cleanings. She and her staff of dental assistants and hygienists use preventive and restorative methods to keep teeth healthy.

Cosmetic dentistry is another specialty of Dr. Giannella and a way to improve, repair, or replace teeth. Her expertise includes veneers, crowns, bridges, and dental implants. Dental implants are the most advanced dental procedure for permanent teeth. In addition to preventive and restorative aspects, dental health is key for a person's overall health. Poor oral health and inflammation are directly related to overall health.

Good dental care delivers. A healthy mouth gives a patient strong, healthy teeth, improved physical appearance, and overall better health.

OPHTHALMOLOGIST DR. KURT JACKSON

Shares Tips for Maintaining Healthy Vision

KKurt Jackson, MD, is a renowned vitreoretinal surgeon and ophthalmologist in Livingston.

As the founder of Jackson Eye Care, he sees patients five days a week and welcomes existing, new, and walk-in patients.

As we observe National Vision Month this May, it’s the perfect time to heed the advice of Dr. Jackson, a leading expert in eye care. He recommends three simple steps to maintain healthy vision:

Nutrition—Maintain a healthy diet and minimally processed foods. Also, eat good quality proteins such as eggs, fish, and lean meats. For non meat eaters, tofu, beans and legumes are a good option.

Activity—Be sure to exercise daily. Have a structured exercise program. If walking is your preferred activity, walk at least 30 minutes each day.

Proper Eye Care—Ensure you wear your eyeglasses when performing essential activities such as reading or driving to reduce straining your eyes.

Manage your screen time effectively by following the 20/20/20 rule. This rule, endorsed by Dr. Jackson, suggests taking a 20 second break every 20 minutes of screen time. During this break, focus your gaze on an object 20 feet away. This simple practice helps to alleviate eyestrain, allowing your eyes to relax before you resume your close-up work.

Take care of your eyes. See your eye specialist for annual check-ups and follow Dr. Jackson’s lifestyle suggestions. Healthy vision is priceless.

I’M HOOKED

II’m hooked on the natural world and the infinite amount of wisdom that’s built into nature. We only skim the surface when trying to understand the symbiotic relationships that occur all around us. For example…

There is a species of acacia trees on the African Savannah called the umbrella thorn acacias. The giraffes were feeding on them and the trees didn’t like it one bit… So, they sent out a toxic substance into their leaves to rid themselves of these giraffes and the threat. But that’s not what totally surprised me when reading this in The Hidden Life of Trees… what they feel, how they communicate, by Peter Wohlleben.

The Acacia trees actually release a warning gas (ethylene) as a signal to neighboring acacia trees of the same species that there is a threat at hand. It reached them up to 100 yards away where the giraffes passed all the trees knowing that the rest of them also released a toxic substance into their leaves. What’s really happening here? Do trees, communicate underground through a various system of roots and connections? Is that the “Wood Wide Web”? The communication that goes on under our feet and all around us is something to marvel at.

This month I had the privilege to interview Cristina Zenato who is a professional cave diver and shark diver with over 25,000 dives. When I found out that she actually puts her hand in the mouths of sharks underwater to remove hooks because they brushed up against her, showing her where that hook lies in their mouth, I was just blown away.

She told me that there’s a whole different level of communication going on down there and she has removed over 300 hooks from a variety of the sharks who come to her because they’re aware that she is the shark lady who takes the hooks out.

When I asked her about fear and if she had any doing this, she told me that her preparation and her passion and love for these animals diminished the fear, totally. I also started thinking about the crazy people who think that shark fins are going to cure cancer so they leave the sharks full body with their fins cut off stretched across the shoreline.

We’ve been inundated with movies and media that portray sharks as the most dangerous predators on the planet. I’d say we are. If you’d like to see the full interview, check out Diamond Minds on Brinx.TV this month. Her message will take your breath away and leave you in awe of the natural world and what we can learn from it.

I still wonder as I walk through my yard and see two healthy trees surrounding one that is losing its leaves and can’t help to wonder if both of those trees are trying to help that one tree by delivering much needed water or nutrients to save their partner. Symbiotic relationships exist in nature and is something we can learn a lot from while working with our peers in all different scenarios.

Like the old saying goes… You can get almost anything you want by helping others get what they want… and as William Danforth (founder of Ralston Purina) had said, “Catch a passion for helping others and a richer life will come back to you”.
