Montclair Resident is Co-Author of Two Graphic Novel Series
J
ason Patterson of Montclair is the coauthor and illustrator, along with his friend Dan Abdo of Vermont, of two graphic novel series – Barb the Last Berzerker, which is for children in grades 3-6, and Blue, Barry and Pancakes, which is for readers in kindergarten through grade 3. Barb the last Berzerker is about a young Berserker warrior who travels through her world challenging evildoers with her trusty yeti pal, Porkchop, by her side. Blue, Berry and Pancakes are best friends who love going on intergalactic adventures. Jason says that he and Dan, who have been friends since high school, were both slow readers who enjoyed comics, which is why they gravitated toward writing and illustrating graphic novels. “We love to make children laugh,” says Jason, who has been enjoying doing in-person events to promote the graphic novels within the community, at libraries, and at schools. The stories are available on Amazon and at bookstores.
Roseland Mayor’s Masquerade Ball This year’s Roseland Mayor’s Masquerade Ball will be bringing the community together for good food and fun on October 22 to raise money for the Roseland First Aid Squad and the Roseland Free Public Library. The public is invited to attend the event, which will be held at the Hanover Manor, with doors opening at 7 pm. There will be a Silent Auction, Tricky Tray and 50/50 raffle, where attendees can purchase 5 tickets for $20. The evening’s event tickets include dinner, drinks, and dancing for $150 each. To purchase tickets, please send an email to mayorspangoball@gmail. “Hosting an event that brings the community together while raising money for two groups who give selflessly to our Borough is an honor,” says Roseland Mayor James Spango. To register to attend, please go to https://bit.ly/3QRRZeX.

rin Feeney, a ninth grader at West Orange High School is a Cadet in the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), which is an auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, and as such, is a member of its Total Force. CAP operates a fleet of 555 single-engine aircraft and 2,250 small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) and performs about 90 percent of all search and rescue operations within the contiguous United States as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center. Through CAP’s global cadet program for teens 12 to 18, Erin is learning to fly planes, lead teams, volunteer in the community, and gain foundations in emergency services. She says she plans to become an officer in military service after high school. Erin is loving the program and says she gets opportunities that no one else her age receives, and she is thankful. https://nj073.cap.gov/

anielle Gautier of Verona is letting people know, “You Got This,” through a branding campaign at her online store, called WheredYouGetIt.com, and hopefully soon in a brick-and-mortar store nearby. It is a consignment store with a twist – it also offers gently used, upcycled, and new items, as well as some created by Danielle. She says, “You Got This,” is a mindset she wants to share because she feels it is very important for people to feel empowered and in control. “I want people to dig deep inside and feel like they are in control and have a solution,” says Danielle. In addition, following a cancer scare with her daughter, Danielle is adopting a family a month at the Special Services department at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center New York. She will be sending the selected family balloons with the slogan, “You Got This,” or items from her store donning the slogan. She can be found on Instagram at #wyougetit

Fairfield Parents Started a Non-Profit to Raise Money for a Cure for Infantile Neuroaxonal Dystrophy (INAD) By Jackie Schatell
W
hen Ariya Panwala started having trouble sitting up, something she had once been able to do with ease, and her pupils suddenly started shaking back and forth, her parents Leena and Anil frantically took Ariya to her doctor to see what was wrong. One year, multiple specialist visits, and five genetic tests later, they finally got a diagnosis – and it was a death sentence. Ariya, who had just turned 2, at the time was diagnosed with Infantile Neuroaxonal Dystrophy (INAD), a fatal neurodegenerative disorder with a mutation on the PLA2G6 gene, affecting 1400 young children worldwide, shortening their lifespans to just five to ten years of age. Leena and Anil learned that Ariya would lose the ability to sit, she would never learn to walk or talk, and she would lose her sight, hearing, and the ability to move and be aware of her surroundings. “We were shattered,” says Leena, who resides in Fairfield. “After doing research, we were disheartened to discover that there was very little research on the disorder, no treatments, no cure, and no clinical trials—there was nothing even available to stop the progression of the illness. In addition, there was no central group for parents to gain support and share information.”
Leena and Anil decided that something had to be done to bring awareness to the disease and to support the community facing it. Thus, they created the INADcure Foundation (INADcure. org) and Ariya’s Wish (ariyaswish.org), a campaign to spread awareness and have people donate what they can to help raise the $7 million needed to treat children with INAD and potentially save their lives. Through the foundation, they have raised $150,000 so far and they have connected with other families whose children also suffer from INAD. Over the last five years, the Panwalas and the INADcure Foundation have been laser-focused on finding treatments and a cure for INAD and other PLA2G6-related neurodegeneration (PLAN) diseases. The Foundation’s team of scientists and advisors have provided a 24-month path to “transition one of their major initiatives, a gene therapy program from preclinical studies to human trials,” a monumental step for such a rare disease. “Our kids do not have the luxury of time,” says Leena. “We need a treatment and cure as quickly as possible because time is of the absolute essence for them.” To learn more/donate, please visit Ariyaswish.org.

Young Men’s Service League Brings Moms and Sons Together to Offer Community Service By Jackie Schatell
L
ivingston resident Connie Breece, founder and president, along with other Livingston women have started a local chapter of Young Men’s Service League (YMSL), which brings mothers and sons together in service of those in need in the community. So far, in one year, the organization has worked with around 20 different philanthropies. The women hope to grow this list of groups and members. Although the chapter is based in Livingston, it is not limited to Livingston residents. “I am excited to be a part of YMSL because it allows me to spend time with my son, work with the community, give back, and make new friends with similar interests,” says Connie. The inaugural YMSL Livingston Board celebrate a successful first year in May. According to the national website, members Pictured from left to right: Angela Chen, Audrey Hipol, Michelle Pourakis, of YMSL are moms and their teenage sons Katy Pun, Heidi Michaels, Soma Chaudhuri, Sandy Bohrer and Connie Breece who volunteer together to serve their local communities during the four years of high school. The young men must be in their freshman or sophomore year of school to join as there is a strict curriculum to “We have accomplished a lot this year,” says Connie. “We are follow. YMSL currently represents over 12,500 moms and 13,000 always looking to grow the list of organizations we can support.” young men as part of over 132 chapters across 18 states. YMSL In addition, she adds, “We have enthusiastic, hard-working offers moms service opportunities and time together with their women on the board who have helped establish the chapter. sons to grow their relationships and instill a heart of service We are looking to grow our membership with other women to last a lifetime. Also, as part of its four-year program, YMSL who have an interest in what we are doing. Right now, there are around 18-20 young men in each of the groups encompassing freshman year through junior year, and the women are looking to round out the groups to 30 members each. Marc Lewin, a junior at Livingston High School, says that he gets as much out of volunteering as those he serves. “It makes me feel good whenever I do an event. Seeing the way it affects people makes me feel like it is worth my time.” Connie adds, “Spending time at the philanthropies we serve has given me a lot of insight into how much of a need there is out there and how much our work is appreciated by those we serve.” Adrienne Lewin, a board member, echoes these sentiments, adding, “For me and my sons, it’s a great way to give back to people in the community. It has been rewarding to be able to make a difference.”

A DIFFERENT A local Doctor provides truly compassionate care and proven solutions for chronic pain and complicated conditions. Care Rooted in Empathy & Experience Do you ever wonder why some Doctors are so incredibly compassionate while others have a bedside manner better suited for the DMV? In the case of Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM, LAc of Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine it is a case of true empathy. “As a new mother I had children that suffered from eczema and recurrent ear infections. Seeing them in pain and discomfort and not being able to participate in their favorite sport— swimming, set me on a path to look for a better solutions for their health issues.”
Dr. Aleksandra’s options were limited to two things. Prescription medications that often did not work and to make lifestyle changes to limit the triggers that were often the cause. “It was no way to live,” she shares “they were young and should’ve been living a bright, vibrant life. Instead I was monitoring their food intake, testing them for sensitivities, avoiding long exposure to chlorinated pools and doing my best to prepare for changing weather conditions. Every, Spring and Fall eczema would flare up. It wasn’t until she took them to an acupuncturist that she found real relief for them. “ This is why I often refer to my practice as “The Last Resort With The Best Results.” You’ve been everywhere else and been given the same disheartening prognosis, prescribed the same medications and told, “this is just something you’re going to have to learn to live with.” Soon after her family’s incredible experience with the healing arts she made the life changing decision to abandon her research and sales careers and pursue her doctorate in acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine. On that journey, she found solutions for some of her own health issues—life-long irregular periods and hip pain. “Acupuncture quite literally changed my life and I want to share that with the world,” she proclaims.
Your Golden Years Should Be Golden While in school she watched as her aunt began to suffer from Peripheral Neuropathy. “Your golden years should be golden, not plagued with insufferable pain while doctors and specialists tell you there is nothing they can do.” Understanding that Eastern Medicine excels where Western Medicine fails, Dr. Aleksandra set forth to develop treatment protocols for all variations of Peripheral Neuropathy (including diabetic and chemotherapyinduced) and now has a 90% success rate in treating this once difficult to manage condition. “I was tired of seeing the older generation suffer unnecessarily,” shares Dr. Aleksandra “Diagnosing them as just getting older and giving them a treatment plan of ‘you’re just going to have to get used to it’ has never sat well with me so I wanted to offer them a real option for treatment and care.”
K I N D OF DOCTOR Dr. Aleksandra has designed similar treatment protocols for other complicated, chronic conditions including fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, post-shingles pain, and even macular degeneration. While each patient plan is tailored specifically to the patient’s concern and goals, all of her treatments are based on a framework that’s over fourteen years in the making. In addition Dr. Aleksandra isn’t opposed to more modern medical solutions. “It’s in blending the time-tested science of acupuncture with recent innovations in medicine that get me the best results.” One of those advancements is ATP Resonance Bio Therapy™, originally developed by NASA, it aids nerves in regeneration by providing them the nutrients they need to repair and renew, “very similar to what water does for a plant!”
The Magic of Compassionate Care And what do those in her care have to say? “Dr Aleksandra looked me in my eyes and wanted to know about me, not just my condition. I feel like a person, not just a patient,” shares Joan. “In fact I don’t think she’s ever used the word patient.” Others proclaim “she saved my life” , “her neuropathy treatments gave me my life back, and “it’s a miracle she treated my fibromyalgia, I don’t know how else to explain it.” Dr. Aleksandra has a long personal history in complicated, difficult to understand conditions and understands how tragic it can all be if left untreated. “I have sat where my patients sit. I’ve experienced their pain and suffering on an intimate level. It’s why I practice the brand of medicine I do and why I’ve made it my life’s mission to treat the “untreatable.” It brings me such incredible joy when I get to say, “I can help you!”
Furthermore, Dr. Aleksandra has surrounded herself with staff that embraces this same approach to patient care. “You can ask any one of my patients and they will tell you that their favorite part about Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine is my staff.”

“I just love everyone here,” shares Christine, who has been a patient of Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine for almost six years. “The girls are always so kind, it’s like going to the doctor with my girlfriends.” Dr. Aleksandra and her staff specialize in treating chronic pain, complicated neurological conditions and autoimmune diseases that leave other professionals scratching their heads. Robert “Jim” Chaconas Real Estate: From Start to Finish By Christine S. Maxwell
R
eal estate is a family affair for Robert “Jim” Chaconas, REALTOR®, serving Essex, Morris, Union Counties, and surrounding areas. His mother was a real estate agent for 35 years, and both grandfathers were in land development and the construction business. So, it was only natural that he would follow in his family’s footsteps. The family dynamic continues as his wife, a designer, is involved with his work; and his nine-year-old twins are learning the ropes early by visiting construction sites and home staging. A realtor for five years, Chaconas, is well prepared for the profession. Previously, he worked in high-end photographic and cinematic pictures, which gave him the overall design and sense of composition in working on real estate projects from start to finish. Chaconas is also a licensed real estate agent in New Jersey and a National Association of Realtors member. Although Chaconas has associates who assist him in all aspects of selling and buying homes, he prefers his work as a listing agent. “As a listing agent, I enjoy meeting people and planning for them to sell their homes quickly and for maximum dollars. I can get them to where they want to be, whether it is a basic sale or increasing the value of their home through my Home Applause business. Home Applause allows us to make the necessary improvements to homes that increase their selling value, “he says. Great Landscapes Start with Great Ideas CLC LANDSCAPE DESIGN LISTENS, INNOVATES, ASTONISHES By Janis Hashe
G
“
reat landscapes start with great ideas,” said Richard Cording, Sr., founder of CLC Landscape Design. And part of evolving those ‘great ideas,’ he continued, “is using input from members of the company’s highly experienced team.”
A perfect example, he noted, is the extensive redesign pictured above. When he and his team first consulted with the Livingston home’s owners, there was no conversation about a pavilion. When the clients met with Rich Jr. during the pre-construction meeting, they expressed some interest. Further discussions led to a pavilion with a TV, fireplace, and planters to frame a unique destination point. The result is a stunning, multi-use area, “that came from marrying our ideas with those of the clients,” states Cording, Sr. Continued on the next page

Great Landscapes Start with Great Ideas CLC Landscape Design prides itself on being a company where “classic design meets cutting-edge technique,” a phrase coined by Eric Cording, who, in his sales role, is often a client’s first contact. The nine CLC designers, six of whom are licensed landscape architects, start by ascertaining what the client’s design sensibilities are. “Right now, the clean, elegant Hampton style is very popular,” Cording, Sr. said. They are able to move from 2-D plans to 3-D visualizations, a high-tech innovation that “makes the design come alive” for clients. “When the Livingston clients were shown the pavilion, that really sparked their enthusiasm for how well the design would fit their lifestyle,” he said.

The company stays abreast of other trends, such as incorporating lighting and technical access into pergolas and other outdoor structures, “essentially building an outdoor home.” Other frequent requests are for fire and water features. Much research goes into the plants used in the designs, ones that will flourish and add color and life for years. For example, Cording Sr, says, “there might be 30 types of catmint, but we picked the cultivar that is the most insect-resistant and has the longest bloom.” Whenever possible, locally sourced stone is used, and boulders and large stones are re-used in the design, or kept for use in another site.
All homes on this page are located in Montclair, Livingston, and the Oranges. Photos courtesy of CLC Landscape Design
Asking questions throughout each project is always key to developing a vision that reflects what the client really wants and needs, Cording, Sr. emphasized. He shared another story of clients who originally requested a swimming pool. But conversation revealed that the owners did not regularly swim, or have young relatives visiting who did. He suggested instead creating a “gorgeous water feature,” that they could see and enjoy year-round. “The questions—and the answers—contribute to uncovering the true potential of the site,” he said.

Fern Bass: A Life of Moments Observed Story and portrait by Dan Epstein
F
or Montclair resident Fern Bass, “the lights went on” as she says at the Brooklyn Museum Art School when she was only ten. Having been signed up for classes in both painting and sculpture, to which she had to take two different buses, it was foundational and inspiring, and the three years she attended classes marked the path for a lifetime in the Arts. Following this with classes at the Cooper Union High School Program continued to lead her after high school to the renowned Art Students League where she took classes while paying her way by modeling. Bass, in her early twenties, applied to and then attended the Pratt Institute majoring in Graphic Design where her art took a commercial turn. After a job as an art director at Fairchild Publications working on several fashion publications, which lead then to the NY Times, and then Self Magazine she was firmly entrenched in the world of editorial art direction. Having been a freelance art director since the birth of her first daughter in 1989, it was the birth of her second daughter in 1994 that found her painting again in earnest and turning back to Fine Art. Once again in painting classes, this time with Miriam Beeman at the Montclair Art Museum, provided the impetus for her to start exhibiting around northern New Jersey starting in Montclair with the Frederick Clement Gallery.
Marais Waiter
Text 38
In the way that life often travels in full circles, it was in 2004 that she started the Bass Arts Studio in Montclair where now she and a staff of instructors offer Art lessons to children, teens, and adults and so inspiring them the way she was inspired those years ago in Brooklyn. Many of her teen students go on to some of the most prestigious professional art schools and colleges. Despite the time required to run this school, she is still a painter whose art never ceases to charm, and her subject matter is often simple moments in time and place that she’s happened to pass on the street and captured with her phone’s camera to later paint.

Marais Waiter, an 18x24 oil on Arches paper, depicts a scene anyone who has visited Paris recognizes. The chairs, so typical of a Paris cafe, seem almost to dance around the waiter who is dressed in the unofficial uniform of black with white apron and contrasts beautifully with the colors of the chairs, clock, and even the door to the cafe as Bass happens past on the street. Finally, in Text, a 24x30 oil on canvas, we again find cafe life, this time in Montclair as Bass surreptitiously photographs her subject while pretending to make a selfie. She likes, she says, “to catch people while they are in an internal contemplative state”, and she does that here perfectly. You can see more of her work both on her website, and in person on November 11-13 at the annual 14C Art Fair in Jersey City.

Tips from the Home Pros Things To Do When Contemplating a Home Remodel • Make a short list of the professional(s) you think you might need. • Interview them briefly via phone, then follow up with a video or in-person meeting. • Ask for at least three references from those you think might be a fit. Ask references open- ended questions such as, “What problems came up during your project, and how did this person resolve them?” • Prior to making your final selection, discuss what will be included in the scope of work, the timeline and cost structure. Once in a contract, there should be no surprises. • Ask when items need to be ordered, to ensure they will arrive in time to be installed. • Create a list of outstanding items, known as a “punch list,” near the end of the project and share it with all relevant team members.

Time for a New Roof? Sadly, roofs do not last forever. But how do you know it’s time to call a professional roofer? First check your attic. If water is getting into your attic or other rooms in your house, call a roofer immediately to avoid water damage and the possibility of MOLD. Improper attic ventilation can also trap moisture and shorten the life of your roof. Take a look outside and examine your roof for possible issues. What shape are your shingles in? Are they curled or broken? Have you found pieces of shingles in your yard? Do some shingles have bald spots? Are there shingle granules in your gutter? All these things are signs that your roof is nearing the end of its life. Additionally, is your flashing damaged or missing, especially around the chimney? Are your gutters and fascia intact? Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters Can Help Prevent Electrocution A ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet stops any electrical current “leakage” in its tracks before it has the chance to spark an electrical fire. They should be used in any area where water and electricity may come into contact. When a GFCI senses current leakage in an electrical circuit, it assumes a ground fault has occurred. It then interrupts power fast enough to help prevent serious injury from electrical shock. Test GFCIs regularly according to the manufacturer’s instructions to make sure they are working properly. GFCIs are very important when it comes to wet or damp areas like kitchens and bathrooms. This is because damp or wet areas are more prone to electrical shorts caused by water. Additionally, any areas that may be prone or exposed to rain or snow such as a garage or porch will also benefit highly from a GFCI outlet. If you live in an older home that could be prone to electrical oddities, GFCI outlets are a major asset for fire prevention and protection.

Importance of Routine HVAC Check Routine seasonal maintenance on your HVAC system ensures your system is working at its best. It also saves homeowners money by revealing potential problems to address before they become emergencies or cause a breakdown, and keeps your system as energy efficient as possible. A routine HVAC check includes changing filters and humidifier pads, making sure vents are not blocked, and checking for rust on metal flue pipes (caused by water leaking down the chimney). Additionally, the HVAC technician will clear drains, burner tubes and other elements, inspect connections, check the motor and thermostat functionality, monitor refrigerant pressure (air conditioning), test safety controls, and lubricate moving parts. You should never wait too far into the season to maintain your heating or cooling system. It is especially important now to book appointments for a fall checkup because due to supply chain disruptions, it’s taking longer to get parts.

Choosing Kitchen Cabinets Cabinets are the foundation of your kitchen, both from a functional standpoint as well as aesthetically. The cabinets are the first thing you see when you walk into a kitchen so choosing the right cabinet type and cabinet door style for your kitchen based on your budget and style will be one of the most important choices that you make when remodeling your kitchen. There are three types of framed cabinets: partial/traditional overlay, full overlay, and inset, as well as a frameless cabinet. Each term is used to describe how the cabinet door or drawer sits on or in the cabinet frame or box. Partial overlay the door only partially covers the cabinet face frame, exposing large portions of the frame. Full overlay is when the door and drawer fronts almost completely cover the cabinet face. Inset cabinetry the door and drawer fronts sit inside of the cabinet frame openings, flush with the frame. Frameless cabinets the door sits on the face of the cabinet box. Cabinet door styles are the main focal point of the kitchen and set the scene of the space. Recessed panel doors are currently the most popular choice and work well in traditional and transitional spaces. Raised panel doors have more detail and lend themselves more to a traditional look. Flat or slab doors are more modern and sleek. The first step in remodeling your kitchen is understanding the differences in cabinets and door styles and choosing the best for your home and budget. Showcase designers explain the differences and will work with you through every step of the remodeling process.

Tips from the Home Pros How to Tell If You Have a Faulty Receptacle
I
f a receptacle allows plugs to fall out, part of the spring mechanism might have worn down. There are probably other issues in the outlet as well.
• If you need to reset an AFCI/GFCI outlet on a regular basis, something might be wrong with the circuit or equipment it is supplying. • If a receptacle feels abnormally warm, call for an electrician right away. This can indicate faulty wiring and the start of an electrical fire. • When you see cracks across the surface of an outlet, stop using the outlet immediately. Cracks indicate damage. Even a small crack is a warning. Scorch marks on the receptacle are another sign of overheating. • A burning smell from a receptacle means there are probably loose wires in it. When the receptacle sparks noticeably as a plug is put into it, it’s another hazardous condition. For safety’s sake, turn off the circuit breaker. Don’t attempt repairs yourself. Call a licensed electrician to repair or replace the problem receptacle.

You’re about to list your home for sale—but is it staged to show better and sell more quickly? Real estate staging enables potential buyers to really see the full view of the property and helps them envision how they would use it. Staging originally meant decluttering rooms, arranging the furniture, and making basic or cosmetic repairs. Today— especially in our competitive North Jersey market—home stagers may recommend a total room transformation. This may include removing or replacing some furniture, adding new accessories, removing distracting personal photos and knickknacks, repainting, and adding colorful artwork or seasonal décor. In the National Association of REALTORS® 2021 Profile of Home Staging, 82% of buyers’ agents said staging made it easier for a buyer to visualize the property as a future home, and 23% of buyers’ and sellers’ agents said home staging raised the dollar value offered compared to similar homes that weren’t staged. Plus, 31% said that home staging greatly decreased the amount of time a home spent on the market. Another tip: High-quality photography for the listing also helps market your home more effectively.

Choose a Pavilion Design that Fits Your Landscape, Lifestyle, and Personality Start enjoying more romantic evenings in your backyard while holding your partner tight in front of your covered outdoor fireplace. Feel confident celebrating with all the people you care about during the holidays while you sip on a drink from your outdoor built-in bar. Whether you like to unwind poolside or entertain family and friends, a pavilion is a great addition to any landscape design. A pavilion will define your outdoor space while providing shelter and adding personality to your property. It can be the focal point of your design or the perfect complement to a pool or garden.
Covered structures elevate your property with their versatility. They help extend the fun from inside to the great outdoors by increasing your useable space. A pavilion provides an outdoor spot to entertain and relax any time of year. Having a covered area in your backyard, particularly one with a fire element, removes the variables of rain or shine, sleet, or snow.

Sharp Knives—the Essential Kitchen Accessory
Shelter Your Trees for the Winter Protect a small tree or shrub from extreme cold and the uneven temperatures of freezing and thawing by surrounding it with a cylinder of snow fencing or chicken wire. Fill the space between the tree and the fencing with straw or leaves for insulation. To shield a dwarf or young evergreen from winter damage, drive stakes into the ground at four corners around the plant. Wrap burlap or heavy black plastic around the stakes and secure it at the top, bottom, and center with stout twine.

A knife’s purpose is to cut ingredients so that you can incorporate the right shapes and sizes for your dishes, but a dull knife edge can lead to trouble. When executing different cuts, a wellmaintained blade will behave more predictably, and there is less chance to lose control and injure yourself. Sharp knives also cut with less need to apply pressure. A dull knife can make every cut a drawn-out struggle, a sharp knife can cut through ingredients quickly and efficiently. Sharp knives also keep ingredients fresh looking. When using sharp knives they will do less damage to your ingredients than dull ones. This is because while they do cut more efficiently, that cut is more precise and thus damages fewer of the ingredients’ cells. Because a dull knife tears and crushes organic cells, it often forces out the ingredients’ natural juices and moisture. Less brute force with a sharp knife means less damage to the food.

Tips from the Home Pros
Prediction About Future Design That Will Surprise You CWI.DESIGN president and principal designer Rachel Kapner has an uncanny knack for making predictions about the future of design. She even has a crystal ball. “It’s sort of a joke around my office,” she says, “so I did get one for my birthday.” So, when she gazes into it, what does Rachel see about the future of design? New Designs Will Deserve Fresh Fabrics This prediction has already come to pass in Rachel’s world, but it’s one you may see more designers embrace. “I don’t like to repeat fabrics,” Rachel explains. “If I use a fabric, I will not use it again, and that is definitely one of my sticking points.” This impulse has occasionally stymied suppliers. “I’ve had sales reps who’ve come in, who have asked me, ‘Show me the fabric you use every day.’ And I say, ‘There isn’t one.’ And they look at me like I’m crazy.” But to Rachel, it’s smart. “Many of my clients know each other. I want each of their projects to reflect uniqueness, so that you could say: ‘Yes, I can see that Rachel did this—but not necessarily see the exact same thing.” What unique fabric would Rachel love to use in an upcoming project? Ideally, she’d channel the influence of design icon Mario Buatta, the Prince of Chintz. “Instead of his true floral bouquet chintz: a different, more abstract version of it—but on the same ground cloth,” she explains. “You don’t see a lot of the same ground cloth that you did 30 years ago. People are starting to ask for it, and it’s just not out there.” While she searches for fabric with his spirit, Rachel will hold tight to her memories of Mario. “I met him about a year or two before he passed away,” Rachel recalls. She’d seen him at talks and books signings, but their most memorable encounter was at a showhouse where Rachel was working. “He was sitting at a table. I went up and just sat and talked to him,” she remembers. “I was so excited that this was my idol, and I was able to meet him.”

Responsible Waste Disposal By Christine S. Maxwell The careful disposal of waste is critical to Champion Waste of Montclair. “Not only are we interested in eliminating clients’ waste materials, but also disposing of them responsibly,” states Louis Mauriello, Champion Waste & Recycling Services owner. Many clients ask ‘What items are recyclable?’ Among the many things that Champion Waste recycles are appliances, metal items, eating utensils, bed frames, metal shelving units, apparatus and extension type cords, bathroom and kitchen fixtures, faucets and pipes, and old car and truck batteries. “People find it interesting that one of the first things we do when removing these items from their homes is to cut appliances and other cords. These items are highly recyclable,” states Mauriello. A common myth is that paints are recyclable. Paint items are messy and need to be disposed of properly. Champion can make special arrangements to dispose of paints with lids firmly attached. “When we handle waste disposal properly,” states Mauriello, “our mission is fulfilled. We help the environment and pass savings created by recycling onto the consumer.”

Secrets to a Beautiful Landscape Your property is essential to your home’s appeal. For a healthy, beautiful landscape: • Keep in mind that trees provide a long-term framework for your property, giving your home structure, shade, screening and style all year long. • Take care in selecting and placing your trees; you may want to consult experts. • We recommend signing up for a lawn treatment program. Aerating and seeding in the fall is always recommended as well.

Increasing the Value of Your Home By Christine S. Maxwell As a REALTOR®, Robert “Jim” Chaconas always thinks of ways to assist his clients when selling their homes. Several years ago, he and his partner, David Masor, created Home Applause, a business designed to help homeowners make improvements that will help sell their homes for its maximum real estate value. When asked ‘What are some of the best improvements to make when selling your home?’ Chaconas, believes that upgrades to the kitchen and the bathrooms will yield top dollar. “We help people make these changes at prices lower than anticipated. Sometimes, simple upgrades are all that is needed. Remember, you are preparing your home for sale, not for your personal preferences,” he says. Other easy changes include painting and window treatments. Chaconas recommends all rooms be painted white and all window treatments be removed. “The house shows well with these simple improvements. It appears clean and bright.” Chaconas, has a straightforward goal in mind. “I want to help the seller receive maximum dollar on the sale of the home and to make the home selling process a quick, efficient, and enjoyable process,” he adds. The costs for repairs are deducted from closing costs, and the realtors pass any profits from the increased sale value directly onto the sellers. “This process is quite a boon for sellers. We send them onto the next phase of their lives with cash in their pockets,” says Chaconas.

Tips from the Home Pros What Type of Stone is Best for a Fireplace Surround? Stone fireplace surrounds are available in a wide range of colors, patterns and textures that can match any design style. From its heat tolerance, to it’s hard, scratch resistant surface, natural stone can handle the rigors of day-to-day use.
Don’t Let Weeds Spoil Concrete Pavers Here’s a quick and easy way to avoid annoying weeds that sprout in the cracks between concrete pavers: replace the sand between pavers with polymer sand. When washed down with water, polymer sand dries into a non-porous yet flexible joint—locking in the pavers and preventing weeds from growing. To keep pavers looking their best, clean up spills promptly, and use an enzyme-based cleaner to remove stains.

• Slate is resistant to heat, but only appropriate for gas and electric fireplaces—the heat from wood fires can be too intense. • Marble is chosen by many for its timeless beauty, and it is heat tolerance and can be used with wood burning, gas or electric fireplaces. • Granite is suitable for gas or wood burning fireplaces. The stone does require regular sealing, but it is relatively low maintenance and easy to care for. • Limestone is very durable and has good heat tolerance. However, this stone should only be used with electric or gas fireplaces.

How-To Choose a Sheen Whether it’s satin or gloss, choosing a finish for your space is just as important as finding the right color. Glossy finishes draw the eye—consider using gloss paint on the trim in a room that has otherwise been painted with a low-luster or flat paint. Also, consider using gloss finishes to help architectural features pop—such as entry doors or trim around ornate glasswork. Satin and low-luster paints are warmer and provide a greater appearance of depth than flat paints. They also resist stains better than flat paints. Flat paints, also known as matte paints are non-reflective, they tend to conceal surface blemishes better than paints with more sheen. They effectively “smooth” walls that are dented or rough. And, since flat finishes actually deflect attention from surfaces, flat paints are a great choice for ceilings or other surfaces you want to downplay.

Natural Light in the Kitchen We spend a lot of time in the kitchen, whether it be preparing meals for the family, hosting family and friends for dinner or children doing arts and crafts or homework. Having natural light come through the kitchen windows and glass doors is wonderful way for the colors and finishes in the kitchen to pop. As the sun moves throughout the day, the sunlight and shadows make the room look different. Natural light will make a room feel more inviting. Sunlight has been known to improve our well-being and reduce stress.
When designing a kitchen, it is important to look at the space and see how we can bring in natural light that doesn’t steal too much cabinet or storage space. Having a window over the kitchen sink is the easiest way but you can be creative. Maybe having a picture or awning window or two in the backsplash area. Here you won’t lose cabinet space, but you can bring the outdoors in. If you have tall ceilings you can utilize the space higher up with transom windows or a circle top window.

Old Decks Can Look New Again Deck resurfacing can be an excellent way to spruce up an existing deck for a reasonable investment. Resurfacing can be a great fall/winter project because it can be finished in a short period of time. Deck resurfacing is the process of replacing the deck boards, railings and/or stairs on existing deck frame and foundation. There are a number of reasons someone might wish to resurface a deck. • The deck isn’t that old but has not been well maintained so the surface boards are weather worn. • The deck surface is fine but the railings or stairs are in disrepair or unsafe. • You purchase an existing home but do not like the finish or materials used for the deck surface. Be sure to have your deck fully inspected by a trusted professional to ensure deck resurfacing in the proper way to go.

The Silverstrom Group While the high-tech office of the family-run Silverstrom Group may speak for itself, the full-service practice takes the utmost pride in being what Dr. Gary Silverstrom describes as a “high-touch” team of well-trained, wellappointed specialists, started by his father, David, 45 years ago. “It’s not just one person’s opinion, it’s an entire team’s opinion—it’s 10 people coming together to develop the best possible plan for every single patient who walks through the door,” he says.
SPECIALTIES
“It’s unique because we can accomplish things faster, with the finest material, and it’s all done in-house, so we can control the final product.” It’s a fine-tuned formula that Dr. Silverstrom also contends makes it much easier on the patient, overall, regardless of their smile objectives. “The goal is that we want to do the right thing for the patient - always. It’s a relationship, and we would much rather have a long-term relationship with a patient than just fix a tooth quickly.”

Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center Breaks Ground on $225 Million Comprehensive Cancer Center on Livingston Campus
C
ooperman Barnabas Medical Center (CBMC), an RWJBarnabas Health facility, broke ground this week on a five-story, 137,000 square-foot cancer center on its Livingston Campus. The $225-million, freestanding outpatient facility, scheduled for 2025 completion, will serve as the northern hub for the integrated oncology services offered by RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, the state’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. “The new Cancer Center at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center will be a regional destination for cancer care, building on the medical center’s longstanding legacy of clinical expertise and compassionate, patient-centered diagnosis and treatment,” said Richard L. Davis, the hospital’s President and CEO. “We are celebrating the dawn of a new era in world-class cancer care.” In alignment with the theme of Reimagining Cancer Care, the new center will feature medical, surgical, and radiation oncology services under one roof—with holistic support services that include a wig and prosthetic studio, teaching kitchen and yoga, reiki, and music therapy. The facility will include private infusion rooms and a calming garden terrace. Other amenities will include short-term and extended-stay treatment spaces where patients can go for treatments that may prevent a visit to the Emergency Department. “A cancer diagnosis is life-changing, and for many patients and their families, it is the beginning of a long and sometimes daunting journey,” said Michael Scoppetuolo, MD, Medical Director of the Cancer Center at CBMC. “To that end, I am
excited about the research and the top-quality patient care that will take place at this new center. We have an extraordinary medical staff and access to clinical trials and research which sets us apart from other institutions in the state and puts us at the leading edge.” “This new building will provide the physical environment to match the clinical excellence of CBMC. This best-in-class, freestanding cancer center will provide the highest-quality science, treatment, and psychosocial services available, distinguishing it from other centers in the region,” said Alison Grann, MD, Chair of the hospital’s Department of Radiation Oncology. Russell Langan, M.D., FACS, Chief of Surgical Oncology & Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery, Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, further emphasized the benefits of having one multidisciplinary location for patients to receive care. “When you have clinicians together under one roof to meet regularly and collaborate, along with integrated services, you are providing peace of mind, greater convenience, and a better experience for the patient. Moreover, the multi-team environment this cancer center will create will also result in better clinical outcomes.” “For well over a century, this medical center has been committed to providing compassionate care, healthcare excellence, and superior service to our patients and their families,” said Mr. Davis. “As we expand our services with facilities like this one, we remain unwaveringly focused on that mission.” More information visit: www.rwjbh.org/cbmccancercenter October 2022

DEALING WITH OBSTACLES,
OBJECTIONS & SETBACKS
By Barry Farber
T
here are great benefits from being aware of the opportunities that lie within difficulties. Anytime we push ourselves into new territories or push our limits both physically and mentally, we will encounter obstacles, no’s, setbacks, and barriers. The real intelligence lies in understanding the incoming data by adjusting, learning and sometimes moving on.
Here are a few ways to deal with incoming obstacles effectively: 1. Strong belief system. Do you believe your idea or position has true value? That will go a long way when faced with objections and challenges. I’m approached by companies that want me to place their products and services into national accounts, or inventors that want me to market their inventions or athletes and entertainers that want me to help them breakthrough. If I don’t see a strong value in the offer it becomes very difficult to market. But when the added value is there it gives you the reasons to keep moving forward against the obstacles. Then tenacity and persistence are easier to enforce and have other benefits attached. People see that extra enthusiasm and effort as a positive energy, especially when backed by an attitude that you have faith behind your mission. 2. The counter is where the strategy lives. In martial arts there is a great advantage to not striking first. The greatest fighters can see an attack coming before the movement begins. The ability to step aside or move into the attack allows you to control their energy or use it against them. In business I’ve seen people try to force their ideas or products on to someone first and it can backfire. When people see someone more interested in their own gains than understanding the key needs and goals of the client then more objections surface.
“We can remove all obstacles through quiet perseverance.” — Chinese Proverb
By understanding not just your strengths but really tuning into the other persons goals it allows you to reduce the obstacles moving forward. I welcome the objections or adversity. I sometimes let them pass Barry Farber right by or address them head on. In martial arts there is a saying, “what’s hard dies, what is soft lives.” Stay flexible and learn how to blend with your opponent. When change comes your way keep an open mind and look for ways to take advantage of the situation by not being so rigid in your approach. When we get set in our ways that is what seems to get “in the way” of new opportunities. 3. Constant preparation and action builds confidence and clarity. Massive action combined with deep research on your strategy has a powerful effect. When you study your targets, goals or anything tied into your objectives it gives you a calming feeling and internal confidence that helps you stand strong against any incoming obstacles. The next time you take on a challenge that might seem overwhelming try to seek out people who have the experience to be a mentor. Then read everything you can about the situation. We have at our fingertips a world of resources on the internet from audio, video and reading materials. But just as powerful as the research and preparation can be, nothing takes the place of learning from our actions. The work will teach you how to do it. I can’t say it any simpler. My focus over the years with each project has been this… to learn from my actions and act from my learning. One without the other suffers, but together provide a powerful strategy to deal with any of those incoming obstacles.
