Montclair Resident Releases Second Album

D

arren Bowden of Montclair has just released his second album called, “Rust,” which is described as alternative rock with great hooks, melodies, and song structures. Eight of the 11 songs were recorded with Chris Sligh, who was a top-10 contestant on American Idol. Darren, who is the VP of Operations at Calvin Klein, wrote all the music himself, plays all the instruments, and recorded the album in his Montclair studio. He says, “It’s a wide variety of rock and acoustic styles. It’s something I’m really proud of.” Critics have described the album as “a collection of songs that will touch your heart and move your spirit.” The album is available on Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, and all streaming services.

Lion Scouts to Create Community Garden

L

ion Scouts Den 838, which comprises 8 kindergarten boys, created Nicky’s Garden on April 16 at the South End School in Cedar Grove in honor of Nicky Storms, who passed away last year. The goal was to honor Nicky and beautify the area with flowers and kindness rocks that can be added and removed by anyone. According to Den Leaders Jen Pela and Vanessa Walters, this community garden activity will help the boys achieve an adventure requirement. “We wanted to come up with an activity that would not only teach them something but would be memorable and offer a lasting physical space that they can visit,” says Jen. The boys sold tulips to raise money for the garden, which were delivered in time for Easter and Passover. They also recently took a trip to the fire house as part of their adventure achievement requirements.

Montclair Youth is a Radio Host

J

acob Lewin, 12, of Montclair is hosting a radio show on the newly created Radio Free Montclair, called “Everybody’s Interesting,” where he interviews people for 20-30-minute segments. His first interview was with Marcia Almeida, a community organizer and his second was with Zach Tenorio a musician who grew up in Montclair. His goal is to “make people understand that everyone has things about them that they can be proud of.” Being a radio host is second nature to Jacob, who spends time performing in professional, community and school theater and film. He says he loves being a radio host and connecting with his community. To other youth considering hosting a show, he says, “You can do whatever you put your mind to doing.” As word spreads about Radio Free Montclair, Jacob hopes more people tune into his show.

CASA of Essex County Creates Awareness of Child Abuse

T

he month of April highlighted child abuse awareness. Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children of Essex County celebrated their volunteers during Volunteer Appreciation Week for their effort to change foster children’s lives. Additionally, CASA of Essex partnered with over twenty-five local businesses to help raise awareness by planting blue pinwheel gardens throughout the county, as a reminder that every child deserves a safe childhood. To shed much needed light on the severity of child abuse— every ten seconds, an allegation of child abuse is reported nationwide, and over 4.3 million children are impacted yearly. Nearly fifty percent of those children are under the age of five. In New Jersey, it is estimated that there are 2.2 million residents of New Jersey, aged 18 and under; and among that total, nearly 6,300 children each year are living in homes that are not their own, having been removed, for even just one night, because of abuse or neglect and placed in foster care. With these staggering numbers in tow, CASA of Essex focuses on recruiting and training volunteers to uplift the voices of abused and neglected children. CASA volunteers represent all walks of life with diverse backgrounds, professions, and skill sets. They undergo an extensive and intensive specialized training that provide them with the knowledge needed to be the court’s eyes and ears for children in and out of court, thereby improving the quality of information presented to the court. By advocating on a child’s behalf, a CASA volunteer works to ensure that each child has access to the services they need and the opportunity to thrive. To learn more about CASA of Essex and volunteer opportunities, visit www.casaessex.org.

Two Girls Giving Hope Hold First Fundraiser By Jackie Schatell

T

wo-time cancer survivor, Alexandra Vizzone, 27, of Roseland, and her best friend since childhood, Tyler DiPaolo have started a non-profit called 2 Girls Giving Hope, which raises awareness and donates proceeds to children battling terminal cancer. In addition, the charity runs bone marrow swab drives and supports children with wishes who were ineligible for the Make a Wish program. 2 Girls Giving Hope held their first fundraiser with raffle baskets and a 50/50 in April at the Mad Hatter in Hoboken, where over 200 guests attended. All of the proceeds will be donated to multiple children and their families with terminal cancers. The restaurant is also donating 20% of proceeds from a specialty 2 Girls Giving Hope menu for the full month of April to the charity. The charity is already starting to plan their next fundraiser with hopes to do two events per year. “We are shocked at how much growth, momentum, and interest we have seen in our new non-profit,” says Alexandra. “2 Girls Giving Hope started off as simply giving hope to families who need it. After surviving a terminal illness all I’ve ever wanted to do was give others the hope and faith I had throughout my treatment. I am using my story to push forward and help others.” Alexandra was diagnosed with a rare form of acute myeloid leukemia at age 15, caused by environmental factors, and spent years in recovery. A clinical trial from Memorial Sloan Kettering and a stem cell transplant from a donor in Germany would be the treatment that saved her life. However, nine years later, she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, and is currently having a relapse that spread to her lymph nodes. However, she remains positive that she will come out on top.

Tyler DiPaolo, left, and Ale xandra Vizzone host their first 2 Girls Giv ing Hope fundraiser.

“I feel there is not enough information being dispersed about childhood cancers, yet there are so many children afflicted,” says Alexandra. “This charity and our events are my way of giving back and spreading awareness.”

Fairfield Resident Writes Letters to

Brighten People’s Days! By Jackie Schatell

L

isa Giuffre, from Fairfield, has started a letter-writing campaign to brighten people’s days. She sends handdecorated cards that are handwritten to people who request letters – many of whom are struggling with mental health issues. She also sends letters to people in residential mental health facilities. To date, she has sent out 734 letters to people in 43 US states and 51 countries. “I love receiving snail mail,” says Lisa. “When I receive it, it makes me feel excited and brightens my day.” “I started thinking that if receiving mail makes me happy, then it might make others feel good too. Right now, so many people are struggling with mental health issues because of the pandemic, and it feels like the right time to be writing to them.” Lisa says people find her via her website and social media pages. There is a form on the website to tell Lisa a little about what a person is feeling, where they can request a letter. The letters, which are all different and are specifically written for the recipients are encouraging and all start out by saying, “I want to begin by sending you some hugs and courage” and they end by saying, “keep on keeping on.” She also tells people they are strong, and they matter.

Lisa Giuffre Lisa says she loves what she is doing. “It feels good to help others and it helps me with my struggle with obsessive-compulsive disorder,” she says. “I have turned my pain into purpose as I was in a bad place when I started this project. It kept me going and gave me a purpose when things got rough.” She says she will keep on writing letters for as long as she is financially able to do so. Lisa, who is in school to get her master’s degree in speech pathology, spends her own money on the letterwriting campaign, with a few donations from family and recipients coming in from time to time. To request a free, handwritten letter of encouragement, go to www.lettersfromlisa.org, or on Instagram, go to @letters_from_lisa.

Whippany Railway Excursions

A

t the beginning of the Twentieth Century, a lovely young woman clad all in white, extolled the virtues of riding the clean trains of the Lackawanna Railroad. This fictional character, named ‘Phoebe Snow’ was renowned as much for her beauty, as well as for the advertising jingles that accompanied the adverts she appeared in. Today, Phoebe invites you to step aboard the Whippany Railway Museum’s excursion trains and take a ride into the past. Their trains feature a unique collection of restored, vintage rail cars from historic railroads that once served New Jersey and the Metropolitan area. Passengers can board a caboose and experience an old-fashioned, relaxing way of spending a Sunday afternoon with the family. Children love swaying to the motion of the old cars while they listen to the nostalgic “clickety-clack” sounds the wheels make as they clatter over the rail joints. Passengers upgrade their excursion experience by choosing to ride in our awardwinning Lackawanna Railroad Subscription Club Car No. 2454, which radiated elegance on a train once known as ‘The Millionaire’s Express’. The Central Railroad of New Jersey club car ‘Jersey Coast’ is a beautiful conveyance that features all the amenities offered by the CNJ’s deluxe Blue Comet passenger train of the 1930s. During the 45-minute ride, the train travels the route of the historic “Whippanong Trail” through Whippany, East Hanover, Livingston and Roseland in Morris and Essex Counties. The train will pass through the remnants of pre-historic Glacial Lake Passaic, a natural swamp which supports abundant wildlife, such as deer, turtles, wild turkeys, hawks and rabbits. The ride also features the thrill of crossing high above the Passaic River over a steel bridge. Existential Comedy, The Giant Void In My Soul

L

una Stage is thrilled to reopen its MainStage with Bernardo Cubría’s comedy The Giant Void In My Soul, directed by Rajesh Bose and starring Jesse Castellanos, Darin F. Earl II, John P. Keller and Valerie Terranova. Inspired by Don Quixote and Waiting for Godot, with a good dose of Abbott and Costello thrown in for good measure, The Giant Void In My Soul invites audiences to celebrate the return of live theatre with an existential adventure. Although the play was written prior to the pandemic, “It is the perfect response to the ambivalence so many of us are feeling in this moment,” said Luna’s Artistic Director Ari Laura Kreith. “We want to embrace the joy of human connection, but these past two years have been so painful and complicated. How do we return to the world perhaps sadder and wiser but also with a sense of joy and hope?”

Natural Make Up and an Effortless Look are Popular This Season By Jackie Schatell

M

ay is a popular time for celebrations and Shag 86’s Fritzi Gonzalez, a master stylist, and Stephanie Quiroga, a prestigious stylist, are offering hair and makeup tips for the season. Popular events include weddings, proms, Mitzvahs, graduations, holiday parties, and girls’ night outs. Fritzi says that this season “is all about soft glam.’ She says right now, “make up is dewier and more natural,” and is more about enhancing one’s own natural beauty. Popular colors are neutrals, corals, and browns. While the cat eye is still popular, she says we will be seeing a softer cat eye. She also says people are wearing a more natural lip. “This season, beauty is enhanced, it is not so dramatic,” says Fritzi. Stephanie says this season, “everyone wants a looser Hollywood wave, and that organized, messy, softer, bohemian

updos are popular.” She calls this “effortless beauty.” She says that “anything goes right now” as hairstyles from every century are popular again and are meshing including curtain bangs, shags, the Farrah Faucet look, and blunt cuts. Color wise, she recommends a seamless look of worn in color, balayage, and hair painting in cool tones. To get ready, Shag 86 offers a beautiful bridal loft for those looking for privacy, while enjoying effortless beauty. Guests are offered delicious drinks, little pastries, and sandwiches to enjoy.

Long-Lasting Floral Arrangements for Every Event By Jackie Schatell

L

adyslipper Posy Floral Couture, owned by Adriana Maniscalco, is not your typical florist – it is a floral boutique. The store carries many unusual high-end varieties of flowers and plants. While the website lists some of the types of arrangements people can choose, most are created as designer’s choice arrangements where Adriana creates custom premium floral arrangements. Not only are the flowers different from what can usually be found locally, but the design style is also not typical. Ladyslipper Posy Floral Couture creates custom arrangements for all occasions including weddings, funerals, and special events, as well as weekly and monthly floral subscriptions. The flowers come from all over the world and are then conditioned upon arrival so that they are robust and last a very long time. “Many people underestimate the amount of work that goes into making sure flowers stay healthy and robust,” says Adriana. “Sometimes people cannot believe the flowers are real because they have such high petal counts and come in so many unusual colors and hues,” she adds. Since the store is a brick and mortar, walk-ins are welcome, and guests will be amazed at the unique in-store gifts, accessories, and exotic plants and florals available.

otton and Jewels is a boutique selling trendy clothing, accessories, and “fine” and fun costume jewelry. Owner Shari Schenerman is After a designer who makes much Before of the jewelry herself. She loves transpiring jewelry into contemporary pieces from vintage sterling silver, 14KT gold and upcycled items like designer inspired damaged goods. Customers bring nostalgic heirloom items, or items “once loved,” and Shari reconstructs them into something contemporary that they can wear to a special event. She also has an affinity for charms and medallions. “I am an artist by birth and if I like the shape of something, whether it is jewelry, furniture, or just redecorating a space, I will redo it because I love making things look better,” says Shari, adding “in this economy, it is more cost effective and sustainable to redo items than to buy new.” Stop in for a consultation.

Great Landscapes Start with Great Ideas By Christine S. Maxwell, photos courtesy of CLC Landscape Design

G

reat landscapes start with great ideas. With these ideas comes a perfect design,” states Richard Cording, owner of CLC Landscape Design in Ringwood. Below are five factors used by licensed CLC landscape architects to create beautiful properties:

1. A Landscape Design Style That Resonates with the Homeowner

For the right design, identify the client’s style. For example, if the client likes a modern style, CLC finds the right items,

price range, and options to create a stunning landscape. Once established, the architect prepares a specific plan.

2. Use of Property by Family

Determine the family lifestyle. Is the client a business mogul who hosts large parties every weekend? Or are the clients a small family with few entertainment needs or a retired couple who wants a small, intimate patio?

3. View From Inside the House

Consider the view from inside looking out. That view may affect not only your property but also your mood. It’s not only the appeal of your property but also the views of the surrounding community to consider. What do you see when you look out the window? What you see should evoke a relaxed response and positive emotion.

4. A Pool in the Backyard

The placement of the pool defines the whole backyard experience. A pool company may choose a convenient location, but CLC considers the big May 2022

picture. How does the pool look from the house? How about its location and proper drainage? Ultimately, a practical and aesthetic location for the pool is ideal.

5. Masses and Repeat Masses of Plant Color

In creating a harmonious and powerful visual expression, plant masses of flowers. Select the same plants and colors with close placement for this visual effect. Incorporate masses of different colors and varieties of plants into the scheme.

LESLIE GOLDMAN

Paintings That Spark Joy Story and portrait by Dan Epstein

S

outh Orange resident Leslie Goldman has been painting since she was seven years old. After completing her studies at the Parsons School of Art in NYC, choosing the world of publishing she became an art director as many art school graduates do and made quite a reputation for herself in the field. But it was after the death of her husband in 2012, knowing that she had to find something to create joy in her life, she turned to painting full-time and in the process found that it was all she wanted to do. She says: “I paint the things I love that spark joy in my life,” and added that she also paints, “to spark joy in other people’s lives.” And spark it she does. Notice the happiness in Cherries. Goldman believes they are a perfect metaphor for life, with stems, pits, and sweet juicy fruit. “Eat the fruit and spit out the pits,” she says. After noticing that she was enjoying a cocktail or two more often during the pandemic, she decided to paint cocktails, and drink a fewer number. Manhattan Monday was inspired by the quarantinis that many of us found a taste for during that difficult time. She spent a year painting many different cocktails, and the paintings struck a chord: she’s sold many of the originals, and has also sold a fair number of print reproductions. New Orleans has had a special place in Goldman’s heart. She visits often, and during one visit was inspired to paint Mardi Gras Crawfish. Crawfish, she says, “are colorful, tasty, and spicy.” The same might be said about her painting which is an ode to the many Crawfish fests she’s attended in the Big Easy. Omaha Beach is a painting she made from her own photograph made on the site. “A profound sense of tragedy and beauty” Goldman says, can be felt when you’re on that hallowed ground, along with an incredible sense of loss. It inspired this painting and has also inspired her to return this

Manhattan Monday spring for an extended period to paint in the French light that has many master painters have found special. Goldman is returning from France soon to participate in The Warren Court Artwalk, a free sidewalk art exhibit she’s producing along with co-producers Sybil Archibald and Wendy Bellerman. The date is Saturday and Sunday, May 21 and 22 from 11am to 5pm. Exhibiting will be 22 artists and the media represented include painters, sculptors, jewelers, ceramicists, printmakers and photographers. While Leslie Goldman’s paintings are designed to bring joy to the viewer, she also does so by bringing the work of other artists to a larger audience as well. Visit her website where you can see more of her work, and even make an online purchase, and visit the Artwork in South Orange: past year’s exhibits have been a huge success and this one should be on your not-to-miss list.

xcellence in academics is a cornerstone of the experience at Mount St. Dominic Academy, with course offerings that empower and enable young women to think critically, act compassionately, and discover their passions. Dedicated to college prep and career readiness, the Mount offers rising juniors the opportunity to apply for and participate in the L.E.O. Program—a two-year elective that morphs the classroom into an entrepreneurial incubator, where discussions of customer segmentation, distribution channels and revenue modeling are the norm; skills like teamwork, problem solving and communication are honed; and guest speakers and professional mentors serve as role models and co-educators. Blending traditional liberal arts with innovative, real-world educational opportunities, the L.E.O. Program encompasses the full life cycle of creating a business or product from ideation to launch with the focus on leadership, entrepreneurship, and opportunities. The intensive program culminates in the Mount’s

Protecting Children in a Digital Age

K

eeping a watchful eye on your kids requires an increasing level of tech savvy many parents find intimidating. Not only are your kids vulnerable to bad actors online, but your family’s personal information could be at risk, as well. Learn how to protect your children and family in this digital age with these tips.

Elementary-Age Children Encourage open communication. Have conversations about what your kids see and do online and talk with them about potential dangers. Avoid lecturing in favor of an open exchange of information. Make their inherent interest in privacy work in your favor. Kids in this age group, particularly toward the middle school years, understand the concept of privacy and value it immensely. Use that context to help them understand what goes online is there to stay. Talk about what kinds of information should always be kept private, including identifying details like addresses and social security numbers. Stay on alert. Not all apps are completely safe (even the ones you can access from trusted stores) and not all filters are foolproof. Keep close tabs on what your kids are downloading by reading comments and reviews, and regularly monitoring what kind of content they see.

Middle School and High School Kids Continue talking about privacy. You can never have too many conversations about privacy. What seems like harmless sharing on social media can be quite revealing. For example, frequent posts about visits to a favorite store or restaurant can allow a predator to begin tracking behavior patterns that make your child a target. It’s also important for kids to understand how their privacy settings work. For example, settings that allow exposure to friends of friends make their visibility to strangers much broader than they may realize.

Help manage their online reputation. Behaviors that once resulted in a day or two of hallway chatter can now live forever. Documenting mischief online is only fun until it spills over into real life and everyone sees those mistakes in full color - including prospective future employers. Be clear about your position on bullying. From the safe distance of a screen, it’s easier for kids (and adults) to say things they’d never say in person. Teach your kids to handle problems constructively offline and avoid engaging in attacks on others through social media, email and other platforms.

College Students Reinforce the risks. Once they’re on their own, kids may feel more liberated to make their own choices online. However, college students are easy prey for identity theft and worse. Remind them what’s at stake if they fail to protect their identity and private information, like where they live and what they do on a regular basis. Teach smart practices. With all the independence that comes with college life, this is an ideal time for your student to take personal responsibility for his or her online security, including learning about virus protection, updating software, avoiding scams and backing up data. Think Your Child Might Have

ASTHMA? Take These Steps

D

oes your child sometimes wheeze? Are they short of breath? If so, they may need to see a health care provider to determine if they have asthma. Asthma affects the airways, or tubes, that carry air in and out of the lungs. In people with asthma, inhaling an irritant causes the airways to become inflamed and the airway muscles to tighten, making it harder to breathe. Asthma is the most common long-term health condition in children, affecting about 5 million kids in the United States. It usually starts before age 5. Asthma impacts some groups of children more than others. For example, boys are more likely than girls to be diagnosed with it. Black, Puerto Rican and Native American children are more likely than white children to have asthma. Poorly controlled asthma can cause kids to miss school or even end up in the hospital. The good news is that with the right management, most kids with asthma can lead healthy, active lives. Here are several things you can do if you think your child has asthma:

Look out for common signs and symptoms of asthma. These include coughing, wheezing, chest tightness and shortness of breath. According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), up to 40% of children who wheeze when they get colds or respiratory infections eventually get diagnosed with asthma. Notice when and where your child has symptoms. Do the symptoms interrupt your child’s sleep? Do they occur during a specific time of the day? Do exercise, allergies or illness make them worse?

If your child’s symptoms persist, see a health care provider. The health care provider may ask about your child’s medical history and symptoms and do a physical exam. They may also conduct tests to measure your child’s breathing.

Work with the doctor to develop an asthma action plan if your child is diagnosed with asthma. This is important. The plan will help you track medicines, monitor symptoms and changes, and understand when emergency care is necessary.

Learn about the triggers that can bring on an asthma attack. Try to avoid the triggers that make your child’s symptoms worse. These may include things that cause allergies – such as pets, pollen, mold and dust – or cold or low-quality air, infections such as the flu and tobacco smoke. Your family and health care provider can work together to control your child’s asthma and keep your child doing the activities they love. Find asthma information and resources from NHLBI’s Learn More Breathe Better® program at nhlbi.nih.gov/breathebetter. —Family Features Photo courtesy of Getty Images May 2022

Personalized Customer Service AT LIVINGSTON PHARMACY

By Deborah Schapiro

R

ebecca Ruditser has a doctorate in pharmacy, but to her loyal customers, she is simply Becky. Ruditser is the owner of Livingston Pharmacy, which celebrated its ninth anniversary last February. According to Ruditser, personalized customer service is what sets her pharmacy apart from larger ones. This means everything from finding manufacturers’ coupons to compounding medications (making them from scratch) if necessary. As an example of the former, she cites a woman whose monthly co-pay for her son’s ADHD medication was initially $600, because there was no generic version. Ruditser helped find manufacturer’s coupon for the medication, and the customer’s co-pay immediately dropped to $25. Ruditser notes, “Since we’ve been here, we’ve seen a huge change in health

insurance, which of course impacts overall healthcare. Our customers are now looking to us for guidance as to when or even if they should use their health insurance when paying for their medication. Helping people navigate the system is now an important part of what we do.” Whether it’s medication for a senior citizen, a baby or even a pet, Livingston Pharmacy provides it with a large dose of individualized attention. Ruditser says, “I hope that people realize the value that we bring to the overall healthcare system, that bigger isn’t necessarily better or even cheaper. Small businesses play a large role in our country’s healthcare system and economy in general.”

Dr. Gigi Paralkar

A True Family Orthodontic Practice By Deborah Schapiro

F

or many children, wearing braces can be an arduous rite of passage. However, for Livingston orthodontist, Dr. Gigi Paralkar, orthodontics was not only a positive experience but a transformative one. She explains, “As a child, I desperately needed braces and knew it. I had a lot of orthodontic treatment, and it completely changed the way I looked and felt about myself. Years later I wanted to give others what I had.” Dr. Paralkar also had a couple of powerful role models: “My father was a general dentist, and when I was young, I used to go to his office with him and watch him work. My own orthodontist was another inspiration; she was an Indian female, just like me.” After unexpectedly losing her father in 2003, Dr. Paralkar, then a consultant at IBM, decided to honor his legacy and pursue her own childhood dream. She

excelled at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, was the chief resident at Rutgers Orthodontic program and has been in private practice since 2014. Dr. Gigi, as she is known to her patients, prides herself on running a true family practice. She says that in addition to numerous sibling patients, “We have a lot of parents in braces or Invisalign alongside their kids. I also treat a lot of adults as more patients in their 50s, 60s, and 70s want to improve their smiles.” Whatever their age, the initial consultation is followed by unrushed appointments and highly personalized treatment. Dr. Paralkar says, “We are not part of a corporate practice. My team includes Jenny at the front desk and my assistants Erin, Ashley and Daniela. As a boutique practice, we really take the time to get to know all of our patients and they get to know us.” May 2022

Naturally, the practice keeps up with constantly changing technology. Dr. Paralkar notes that she is continually enhancing her skills with continuing education. Examples of cutting-edge technology offered at Livingston Family Orthodontics include intra-oral scanning and offering Spark™ Aligners, which are even less visible than Invisalign. Dr. Paralkar concludes, “I feel honored that patients have chosen to entrust their mouths to us, and blessed that I get to do a job that I love.”

In addition to Dr. De Hoyos, LightPort Physical Therapy & Spa® has four employees who provide physical therapy and therapeutic massage services. They include a manager, a physical therapy assistant, a licensed massage therapist, and a setup aide. The team treats primarily orthopedic problems, musculoskeletal issues, neuromuscular conditions resulting from Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis and stroke, through physical therapy and targeted massage techniques. They also work on issues related to prosthetics, such as knee and hip replacements, before and after surgery, and throughout the recovery period. “We treat any movement problem caused by injury to muscles and joints,” says Dr. De Hoyos. Dr. De Hoyos has specific goals to ensure maximum recovery for each patient to return to work or sports with no limitations. To achieve this goal, the team first educates the patient. “We make sure they understand their injury, the recovery process, and ease their fears. Patients have a home exercise program during and after recovery,” he states. Patients praise the responsiveness of LightPort Physical Therapy & Spa®. When arriving for appointments, patients are seen immediately upon arrival, with little or no wait time. An employee is always with the patient to provide direct supervision, and ensure the safety and efficiency of the treatments. “We are there 110% for our patients, from injury to recovery,” remarks Dr. De Hoyos.

hen looking to establish his physical therapy practice, Dr. John De Hoyos, DPT had two goals in mind. He wanted to focus on quality oneon-one patient care, in a small community town, where he and his team could focus on the comfort and the success of each patient’s treatment experience. He Dr. John discovered Caldwell, a De Hoyos, DPT town with excellent small businesses and unique attractions, a town that he and his family love. Jackson Eye Care Can Refresh Your Vision

Educating, Nurturing and Energizing the Mind, Body & Soul.

By Janis Hashe

r. Kurt Jackson saw the many benefits of ophthalmological care while working as an Army medic. “I especially observed the increase in quality of life for older patients,” he said. Now, in his Livingston practice, the vitreo/retinal surgeon treats conditions such as diabetic eye diseases, retinal Dr. Kurt Jackson detachment, holes and tears, and, often, macular degeneration. “People are living longer, which means more people with these conditions,” he said. Ophthalmology, he noted, “is a tech-driven specialty.” Multiple innovations over the last few years, such as optical coherence tomography, a non-invasive procedure that produces high-resolution images of the affected area, and diagnostic ultrasound, used to examine the eye’s interior, have made diagnoses more accurate, incisions smaller, and recovery time faster. Dr. Jackson uses these and other innovations to improve care and lessen stress. The majority of Dr. Jackson’s patients are referred by another physician, but his office can also schedule exams for others.

aring for people’s teeth for practicing for over 20 years in the same neighborhood, Dr. RoseAnn Giannella is proud to be a now-hard-to-find family dentist—but one who keeps up with the many innovations in dental science. From advances in basic procedures, such as fillings and crowns, to porcelain veneers, through the advancement that is “changing people’s lives,” dental implants, Dr. Giannella is dedicated to providing patients with choices that not only improve the appearance of their teeth, but enhance overall health. Implants in particular, she said, can replace ill-fitting dentures or aging bridges with permanent, natural-looking replacements. An initial visit will analyze the patient’s needs, followed by a course of treatment that results in not just a beautiful smile, but increased comfort and a healthier mouth. “Friendly, helpful staff and lovely doctor,” wrote one patient. “Great experience for someone who doesn’t like dental visits.”

ieci Lifestyle Spa in Livingston will soon be opening its fully renovated Spa. One of its new and unique offerings will be a Halotherapy salt room. “It’s a dry salt which has many wellness benefits, different than wet salt treatments” says Marie Gaglioti, who owns the spa along with her husband, Paul. “It’s heated and dried and then dispersed into the room during a typical session. You can just lay back, relax and inhale it.” She says Halotherapy has many benefits. “For people who’ve been exposed to pollutants, airborne diseases, bacteria, and allergens, it helps detoxify the lungs. It’s also good for general hygiene and skin irritations such as eczema and psoriasis. You don’t have to have any type of condition – dry salt therapy is wonderful for overall general wellness. The salt brick lined halotherapy room will provide a relaxing atmosphere with its gentle lighting and four comfortable lounge chairs. Each session is a half hour long and will also be incorporated into packages along with other spa services such as massages and body treatments. An additional new offering will be an Infrared Sauna. “That’s another therapy that you don’t often see,” says Marie. Unlike regular saunas, which heat the air around you, these use infrared

lamps (that use electromagnetic radiation) to warm the body directly promoting better sleep, detoxification, weight loss and many other benefits. “We always want to do more and bring our clients different wellness therapies that are not found everywhere,” she says.

Tips for Handling ANXIETY By Jackie Schatell

M

ay is Mental Health Awareness Month, and Magdelena Brown, a therapist at Discovery Wellness in Cedar Knolls has some tips for handling anxiety. Anxiety is intense, excessive, and persistent worry and fear about everyday situations. Magdelena says anxiety is a very normal state of being, provided there is an actual danger. There are a few key signs that one is having anxiety which include: feeling nervous, restless, or tense; having an impending sense of danger, panic, or doom; having an increased heart rate; sweating; feeling weak or tired; or having trouble concentrating or sleeping. Magdelena says while there are many techniques one can use; she recommends deep breathing and the 54321 Grounding Technique. She says the fastest way to calm down during an anxiety attack is to take slow deep breaths through the nose to the diaphragm because when you “fill the belly with air, it presses on the vegus nerve on the spine, which signals the brain that the danger is over, and the body can calm down.”

Magdelena Brown The 54321 Grounding Technique requires a person to look around and notice 5 things they can see, 4 things they can touch, 3 things they can hear, 2 things they can smell and 1 thing they can taste. If anxiety is causing you stress, Magdelena recommends seeking help at the Discovery Psychotherapy Center.

Eliminate Painful Injections and Anxiety with the Wave of a Wand® By Cynthia Burns, photo by Dan Epstein

D

r. Linda Stone and her daughter, Dr. Vanna Stone, of Gentle Caring Dentistry do everything in their power to eliminate the fear that patients have about going to the dentist. One tool they use to alleviate a patient’s anxiety is The Wand®, a computerized technology that painlessly delivers a numbing agent to the gums.

“We can eliminate painful syringe injections, ease patient anxiety and actually encourage people to have the necessary dental work done,” says Dr. Linda Stone. The Wand® can be used for any procedure that requires local anesthesia. The computer-controlled system delivers anesthesia underneath a patient’s detectable pain threshold. “The reason patients usually feel pain when receiving a syringe injection is not the actual needle, but the build-up of anesthesia volume in their tissues,” Dr. Stone explains. “The Wand® eliminates this by delivering a precisely controlled amount of anesthesia over time that is imperceptible by patients and therefore painless.”

Dr. Vanna Stone and Dr. Linda Stone A big plus is the ability to localize the anesthesia to the troublesome area, rather than experiencing a numb lip and tongue. “It is a wonderful feeling when a patient tells you that it was the best injection they have ever had or that they did not feel a thing,” Dr. Stone adds. The Doctors Stone are proving that going to the dentist can be stress free.

Diamond Minds

The Secret Sauce By Barry Farber

T

his month I sat down with Chance Healy, a founding partner of 1776 by David Burke. Launching a restaurant with Topgolf Swing Suites in the middle of a pandemic had its ups and downs with valuable business and life lessons.

Chance: Nobody in their right mind is signing a long-term commercial lease in the middle of a pandemic. But we did and got a pretty favorable term in the process which worked out for ourselves and our investors. But you still have to take a risk in the process. I learned a great deal in this process. Having the support of people around you and your partners is critical. So many times we could’ve pulled the plug and walked away from it. We could’ve done that in the middle of Covid but we were so passionate about the idea and concept of partnering with Topgolf Swing Suites and Chef Burke we just had to make this happen. If we can get through this we can make it work.

(Left-right) George Schneider, Chance Healy, Chef Burke and David Vorcheimer

Barry Farber: How did this idea come about? Chance Healy: My partners are David Vorcheimer and George Schneider. I’ve known David for years and actually palled around Morristown with him when we were kids. David approached me with a business idea one day and the model was–golf simulators, a great restaurant, and a great bar. Initially we were thinking of doing a private club somewhere in town. A place where golfers had a destination to play on the off-season since in New Jersey that season is only six months long. My background is in hospitality from restaurants to hotels and was intrigued with this idea. Once we got a big name like Topgolf Swing Suites on board we thought why don’t we get a great celebrity chef on board to run the kitchen. So we brought on celebrity chef David Burke. Barry: What did you learn in this process and what were some of the obstacles you ran into starting a restaurant in the middle of a pandemic?

We learned a lot about ourselves. Through integrity, supply chain problems, fear as a motivator and a lot of hard work. Barry: What did that work involve? Chance: Executing on every detail. Converting two old boring office spaces and condensing them into one magical space that we are in love with. Topgolf provided some technology support that was over and above our expectations. Chef Burke had all teams hands on deck in menu design, kitchen design and more. Barry: What was the most important component to your success in this endeavor? Chance: Trust. Sharing everything. When you’re going out to borrow money from a bank they are going to see everything. You see all the good and you see all the bad. The key is to be transparent with your partners. When you’re in a stressful business like this that demands so much attention and so much manpower the key is to be upfront and honest with everything you’re doing.

Barry: What did you learn about yourself in this process?

Barry Farber

Chance: The most important thing is to trust your instincts. Trust your gut. My mother always told me to, “Trust your gut, trust your gut.” From the people you meet to the ones you’re partnering with, always be forthright and honest. Be true to yourself. Barry: Are there any other interesting fact you’d like to share? Chance: I’m a product of the restaurant business. My grandmother owned two restaurants. My father ran one and my aunt ran the other. I was raised in both of them. As soon as I could get my elbows over the sink I was a dishwasher and got right to work. I was literally born into the restaurant business, I was baptized in our family restaurant by our priest on the restaurant bar! I guess you could say I was destined to be in the restaurant business sooner or later. So opening up this restaurant in this tumultuous time seems as if everything we’ve touched has worked out and It’s sure not been without struggle and adversity. It almost feels like someone from above is looking out for us. Barry: I feel like it always comes down to the ability to take adversity and difficulty and pull out the best from it because there’s always opportunity in any difficulty. Chance: It’s funny because I have a Wall Street background and some of the best investors of all time, including Warren Buffett, love when the investor sentiment goes down and everything becomes risky and everybody starts pulling their money back into their pocket. Then they start investing and jumping in because in any stressful situation there is an opportunity to grow and expand. And with a small business like ours there’s no difference.
