These are the symptoms we hear from people living with Fibromyalgia. Its symptoms mae everyday life challenging, and mundane and daily tass nearly impossible. Plus, more often than not, these symptoms are only worsened because many doctors find it challenging to understand and even more difficult to treat. If you are experiencing widespread pain in muscles and tissues you may be experiencing signs of Fibromyalgia. Over-the-counter medications often mas the symptoms of Fibromyalgia. Prescription pills, unfortunately, only provide temporary relief and, more often than not, fail to wor at all. Possibly the worst-case scenario: you’re also entirely disrespected or dismissed by medical professionals who don’t get Fibromyalgia or don’t care to understand.

Alesandra Mihajlovic, L.Ac., is a renowned authority figure in acupuncture, especially in chronic and seemingly complicated cases. With over 10 years of clinical experience, she brings a missing lin of healthcare to the Montclair area!

Northern New Jersey residents no longer have to suffer! Finally, a local therapist has a proven solution for Fibromyalgia pain!

Alesandra uses non-pharmaceutical, non-invasive, integrative therapies to relieve her patients of Fibromyalgia pain, one of which is acupuncture. Acupuncture is a form of Chinese medicine and uses fine needles to stimulate specific areas of the body. People use acupuncture to reduce various forms of pain, and it wors by reducing inflammation, stimulating the release of endorphins, and offering effective relief from the symptoms of Fibromyalgia. In addition to acupuncture, she also utilizes other non-invasive therapies such as ATP Resonance BioTherapy™, Clinical Herbal Medicine and non-pharmaceutical, non-opioid, non-steroid, natural therapies for amplified and lasting results.

Our emphasis is difficult to treat chronic conditions: Chronic Pain • Fibromyalgia • Neuropathy • Arthritis • Sciatica 70 Par Street, Suite 101 Montclair, NJ 07042

Calabria Donates 10,000 Meals and Counting Throughout the Pandemic By Jackie Schatell

D

espite facing a catastrophic financial struggle of its own due to the Pandemic, Calabria Restaurant Bar & Pizzeria, in Livingston, whose thin crust pizza garnered a coveted 8.9 Barstool Sports Pizza Review from Dave Pornoy on January 15, 2021, has been steadily giving back to the community in spades. On May 14, 2021, Calabria hit its goal of donating 10,000 Family Meals to those in need, and then upped its goal to 15,000. They offer the meals valued at $39.99, which feed 4-6 people, with “no questions asked,” to anyone calling and saying they are in need, according to Gabriella Ottaiano, whose dad, Dino, is a part-owner of the family-owned business. “We haven’t forgotten where we came from and are here to help,” says Gabriella. “It’s our turn to give back.” This is not the first time Calabria, which has been in Livingston for 21 years, has shown its generosity. One can tell just from seeing all the posts of gratitude online from the schools, teams, causes and Essex County vaccine sites that they continuously support, that the Calabria’s team has a huge heart.

The Ottaianos, who own Calabria Restaurant Bar & Pizzeria, in Livingston, from left: Gabriella, Bernardino, Giuseppe, and Giuseppe, Jr., pose in front of a banner thanking Dave Portnoy, of Barstool Sports Pizza, for his 8.9 rating of their thin pizza.

They say that when you put the effort in, you get it back two-fold and that is exactly what happened when Pornoy dropped by in January to do his 1,000th pizza review. He said, “I love this pizza; it’s as good a pizza as I have ever had,” and helped to put the pizzeria on the map. Earlier in the taped episode, which can be seen on Calabria’s Facebook page, an emotional Gabriella gave Portnoy a tour of the large, dark, empty party and dining rooms, saying “for all these months we have been shut down… 40 years in the business they just gave up, we have 40 employees, no one comes inside, they are all scared.” June 2021

To keep the business afloat, Calabria changed its model and began providing take-out and delivery only to 22 towns. Gabriella calls Portnoy a hero because “he puts a face to the problems” facing restaurants due to COVID. “Dave Portnoy’s review saved my family’s business. The week before his visit, we weren’t sure if we could make ends meet,” says Gabriella via a Facebook post. Even though Calabria was suffering, it has been paying it forward via donated Family Meals since November 2020; and although they weren’t looking for a reward, they received one via Portnoy’s review!

Livingston Resident Spends His Days in Retirement Feeding the Homeless

N

ick Santinelli of Livingston has a huge heart. Nick not only spends a good deal of time of each day, feeding the homeless in Newark, he is also helping to employ a zero-waste policy.

From 6am until nighttime, the retired business owner spends every day collecting food from local stores, restaurants, people, events and more to be distributed to the homeless in Newark via soup kitchens and churches. He sometimes makes as many as 6-7 trips a day.

This July, Nick Santinelli will be receiving a UNICO award for his exceptional dedication and service to mankind.

Over the last year alone, Nick has delivered more than 25,000 sandwiches to the hungry.

Nick’s efforts not only ensure that the homeless have food to eat, they also help the environment by making sure that no viable food goes to waste.

Nick Santinelli

“This is something close to my heart,” says Nick, who is a member of Livingston Neighbors Helping Neighbors, which is a group he coordinates his efforts with. “I feel good when I get home at night, tired, but good, because I did good,” he says. “Everyone comes together and wants to help.” While Nick does all of this from the goodness of his heart and not to be rewarded, this July, he will be honored by UNICO National for his exceptional dedication and service to mankind.

Unscripted Portraits On Exhibition

P

hotojournalist Dan Epstein will be exhibiting a collection of recent portraits this month at the Local Coffee Shop’s gallery in Montclair. Epstein’s work has appeared in countless American newsmagazines and is known for having a personal, intimate quality. This project is different from his highly directed editorial assignments. He places the subject in a neutral set, and gives them no instructions other than: “please sit here.”

After checking the framing and focus, he comes out from behind the camera and engages his subjects in conversation face to face, while firing his shutter during moments when he sees they are being completely natural. There is no “script” to the session. Moments are captured and personalities are revealed in an often amusing, but always strikingly different way than we traditionally expect.

You can view the work from June 8th to July 5th, and get yourself a delicious beverage at the same time; please check the hours on the shop’s website.

New England Comes to Bloomfield Avenue Jack’s Seafood Shack has faithfully brought the very essence of the New England seaside fare to Essex County. And they’ve not only done it really well, but they’ve blown past it with many more seashore inspired offerings. At the heart of it: a seafood shack has to have lobster, and here a Whole Maine Steamed Lobster arrives at your table cracked for you and ready to eat accompanied by corn on the cob, home made Cole Slaw, and melted butter. It’s worth noting that for those who don’t want the traditional approach, they’ll happily serve the lobster completely removed from the shell. It’s not only much closer than Maine, but in some ways, well, better. Do yourself a favor: go.

A Wonderful Trip Back In Time The jury is still out on whether or not Tony Soprano met his fate in a booth at Holsten’s at the very end of the series. You can be sure the verdict will be unanimous that a trip to Holsten’s is fun for the whole family. Unlike some retro-styled soda fountains, this is the real deal since 1939. Sit at the counter or at one of the booths, and have one of the many classic sundaes they offer, or an ice cream soda, milk shake or egg cream and you’ll feel like you’re in a different by-gone era. The ice cream is homemade, and worth the trip. If you’re hungry order one of the many burgers, a sandwich off the grill, a club sandwich, or even breakfast. On the way out, you’re going to want to stop and purchase some of the homemade candy and chocolates to bring home. And if you’re a Sopranos fan, get there at the right time and you can sit in Tony’s booth and even order “Fries for the whole table”. Your fate is sealed: delicious enjoyment.

Fifth Generation Jeweler Continues to Offer Honest and Superior Personal Service By Cynthia Burns, Photo by Dan Epstein

W

alter Bauman Jewelers provides high quality jewelry with a price structure that is advantageous to customers. Commitment to quality is evidenced by being a fifthgeneration jeweler in a business that dates to 1868. Owner Walter Bauman says, “The goal is for customers to purchase the right piece of jewelry at a fair price.” The business has established a history of pricing that is typically 50 to 60 percent below those of other jewelry stores and department stores, all while providing customers with honest and superior service. Bauman’s roster of 20 employees includes gemologists, designers, jewelers and watch makers, many that have been long-time employees. Customers may choose from a comprehensive collection of both new and estate jewelry or have a piece custom designed exclusively for them. The staff’s expertise guides a customer’s vision to fruition, resulting in a unique, exquisite piece of jewelry. Bauman notes that much of their jewelry comes with an insurance appraisal. Walter Bauman Jewelers’ Buy-Back program allows customers to sell jewelry, watches and coins back to the jeweler. A team of diamond experts and jewelry buying specialists examine and evaluate all components of the piece and offer cash back or a certificate for a purchase at the store. Bauman follows industry

trends to gauge what jewelry designs are in vogue. The best barometer, however, are his customers. He explains that so many pieces are made on premise that reflect the flair of his customers in West Orange and the surrounding towns. Walter Bauman Jewelers continues to be the personal jeweler of choice and distinction.

State-of-the-Art Science Plus Love Verona & Montclair Animal Hospitals Help and Heal

By Janis Hashe, photo by Dan Epstein

T

he two sister animal hospitals in Verona and Montclair share a common philosophy: Carefully explain to owners what’s best for their beloved pets. Dr. Anthony Scriffignano (“Dr. Scriff”) and staff believe in helping pet owners make informed decisions. “I show them the X-rays, the ultrasounds—even draw pictures if that will help,” he said. Dr. Scriff advocates strongly for comprehensive yearly exams. “Pet shops and pet product stores now schedule vaccination clinics, but many pets are coming to us with advanced problems that vaccinations don’t address,” he said, comparing the exam to a human yearly physical, designed to detect problems in advance. Pets are living longer, and with that comes greater risk of illnesses, such as kidney failure in cats, and cancer in dogs. Early detection can be the key to treating those conditions. Both facilities also offer advanced techniques that few other animal hospitals can provide. Video ear scoping can quickly diagnose and treat chronic ear infections. Laparoscopic surgery can be used

for spaying, resulting in much smaller incisions and faster recovery time. It can also be used for liver and other organ biopsies, said Dr. Scriff. Telemedicine enables the hospitals to access information quickly from other laboratories. During the pandemic, the hospitals have maintained strict safety protocols, including curbside pick-up and delivery of pets. But as human vaccinations increase, and owners feel Dr. Anthony Scriffignano comfortable, Dr. Scriff knows they—and their pets—will welcome a return to the loving personal service both Verona and Montclair Animal Hospitals offer.

Father’s Day 2021 Excursion Train Rides

F

or the first time since October 2019, the Whippany Railway Museum is pleased to offer Excursion Train Rides—Father’s Day, June 20. The trains depart for a 45-minute ride through the countryside.

They’re waiting for your next move.

Make it Tanya L. Freeman. Divorce. Separation. Custody. Alimony. Deciding who gets what. It’s all stressful, heartbreaking— and a single misstep can be costly. That's why, for so many people, their next move—or their first—is to call Tanya L. Freeman. As a longtime family law practitioner, she brings skills and insights gained from her work in various public and private sector disciplines. This know-how helps Tanya develop strong negotiation and trial strategies designed to help clients move confidently through every phase of their matter.

After a seven-year restoration effort by Whippany Railway Museum volunteers, their newest addition is ready for its unveiling— the Lackawanna Railroad Commuter Subscription Club Car No. 2454, built in 1912. This historic car was constructed by Barney & Smith Car Co., Dayton, OH, in 1912 for the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad (DL&W), and converted from steam-hauled to electric propulsion in 1930 by American Car & Foundry Co. Celebrated New Jersey inventor, Thomas A. Edison rode as a guest in 1930. No. 2454 was assigned to the Hoboken-to-Gladstone run, on a train known as “The Millionaire's Express.” No. 2454 was retired from service on August 24, 1984. Riders are welcome to take a seat in one of the cushioned, painstakingly reproduced rattan arm chairs, admire the original wood inlay details and ride like a millionaire. Another train that is part of this Father’s Day event is a long-time favorite—the elegantly-restored 1927-era Central Railroad of New Jersey (CNJ) ‘Club Car’ Jersey Coast. The car has the look and feel of a private club with individual leather chairs, mahogany interior accented with stained glass, built-in tables and period ceiling fans. The striking paint scheme of cream and blue reminds one of a comet streaking through space. Visitors can also opt for a ride in one of the restored cabooses and experience how the train crew lived on the rails. This part rolling office/part living quarters was the car where freight railroad employees did their administrative work, ate their meals and even slept on long runs.

CATS, DOGS & HUMAN FOOD

How Can Our Food Harm Our Pets?

W

e’re all guilty of it—giving in to those big begging eyes pleading at us for a scrap from the table during dinner. Human food can be harmful to your pet, and in some cases, can be fatal. It’s important to know how certain foods can be unsafe so that you can avoid them for the sake of your animal. Here is how a few of some of the most common “human foods” become harmful for pets:

Onions & Garlic

Milk

Onions and garlic are potentially harmful due to the fact that both contain thiosulphate, which can damage red blood cells and cause anemia in cats and dogs. Of the two, onions are the most toxic, as consumption of simply one serving by your pet could result in anemia.

Milk can harm your pet due to the fact that many dogs and cats tend to be lactose intolerant. The consumption of milk and milk products by a lactose intolerant pet creates a breeding ground for bacteria, causing vomiting and diarrhea.

Chocolate & Other Foods Containing Caffeine Caffeine is one of the greatest culprits because it contains an alkaloid called theobromine. Theobromine acts as a cardiac stimulant and a diuretic, which in turn can cause a heart attack or other heart and nervous system problems in animals.

Bones Bones are potentially very dangerous for pets. Once eaten, bones can splinter and get stuck in the intestines, causing damage or fatality. In most splinter cases, the bones must be removed surgically.

Other Foods Other human foods to avoid when feeding your pet are: macadamia nuts, potato peelings and green-looking

potatoes, rhubarb leaves, moldy/spoiled foods, alcohol, yeast dough, tomato leaves and stems, broccoli, and raisins or grapes. Some human foods potentially cause only mild digestive upsets, while others can be fatal. Regardless of the level of danger, the best choice for your pet is to keep him from any potentially harmful foods in order to ensure his health and safety. So, the next time your pet looks up at you with those pleading eyes, show him you care by doing what is truly best for him and feeding him only products meant for pet consumption. In the end, both you and your pet will be glad that you did. -Courtesy of pet-articles.blogspot.com

Pets in Need of a Forever Home Fall in Love with Lulu

Biddy is Your Buddy

Eat, play, sleep, play, repeat. Biddy is a nice balance of active and mellow. His owner passed away, so he’s living with a foster father. He spends some of his time happily in his crate while his foster is at work. He craves playing fetch. Yard play and walks make him happy. He’s an easy keeper. He’s not destructive. He’s healthy, housebroken and up to date on all his shots. Biddy is a little nervous with new people, so a home with older children is preferred. If you’re interested fill out an adoption application. Rescue Haven Foundation Caldwell, NJ rescuehaven.org SPONSORED BY VERONA ANIMAL HOSPITAL

Lulu absolutely loves everyone she meets. She also loves other dogs, kids, and cats, too. Best guess is Lulu is a border collie, basset hound mix. Fully grown at a perfect 38 pounds, Lulu spent her life outdoors before she was rescued from a kill shelter in South Carolina. So unfortunately, she contracted heartworm. Lulu’s Heartworm treatment will be continued at the expense of Home for Good Dog Rescue. She’s spayed, up to date on vaccinations and microchipped. Lulu is waiting to fall in love with you. Buyers Will Give Your Home a

STANDING OVATION By Sue Baldani, photo by Dan Epstein

R

ealtors David Masor and Jim Chaconas with Keller Williams NJ Metro Group have devised a unique offering to put more money into sellers’ pockets. Instead of selling a home as is, HomeApplause will handle the entire process of updating and refreshing the home to achieve the best possible selling price. After living in the same house for a number of years, many homeowners know their homes may need a bit of a makeover prior to selling. The process of hiring and managing contractors to do these updates can be quite overwhelming. They also many not have the funds to invest in this much needed work. This is where HomeApplause comes in. With HomeApplause, this anxiety and inconvenience is taken away. Their amazing team handles it all—the design, project management, staging, and ultimately selling! Best of all, the cost of the updates are paid for after a successful close of sale.

What are the advantages of using HomeApplause instead of selling a house as is or hiring one’s own contractor and Realtor? Jim Chaconas: We will make the process very easy and smooth. We are going to take a lot off the homeowner’s plate, with the number one benefit being that the homeowner is going to profit more from the sale. David Masor: We manage the whole project, and we pay for all of the upfront costs. It is not an intimidating experience. We’re not knocking down walls or pulling permits… we’re doing simple stuff like pulling up old carpet, stripping old wallpaper, painting, and other projects to update the home. Ideally, in four weeks or less.

What is the process? DM: We provide a free consultation and show comparisons to help educate the homeowner. We design the scope of work, prioritizing the important areas that are going to have the most impact—such as kitchens and bathrooms. We plan the budget and manage the contractors.

(L-R) Jim Chaconas and David Masor

What makes your team qualified to handle every aspect of this process? JC & DM: We are licensed Realtors and have personally flipped and sold many investment properties. This inspired us to seek a way to help homeowners effectively flip their own home. That is really our intention, and why we have curated a team of experienced project managers, interior designers, and stagers. All ready to help the homeowner with the little details that matter the most to the buyers. HomeApplause’s expertise is in updating, refreshing, and selling homes with the ultimate goal of attracting buyers at the highest price possible.

JC: We are real estate agents first, we know what finishes buyers are looking for and what updates will bring the most value. DM: Once the home is ready, we market the property to get it sold quickly & for top dollar. We handle everything from beginning to end.

A Discussion with

DANIEL K. SALVANTE

Clipper Pavilion paddle boats at the South Mountain Recreation Complex

Director of Essex County Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs

By Jackie Schatell

A

s part of our monthly column that introduces the public to Essex County departments and the people who lead them, this month, Suburban Essex Magazine talked to Director, Essex County Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs, Daniel K. Salvante. Please tell us a little about you, and how long you have been in this position. I have 44 years of experience as a parks professional, with the last 25 being with Essex County. The Essex County Parks System was created in 1895 and is the first county parks system created in the United States. There is a deep and rich history here and it is an honor to be able to carry on that legacy. Can you please share some stats about the Essex County Parks? There are 23 parks and five reservations in the Essex County Parks System, which is over 6,000 acres in size. Our largest reservation is the 2,000-acre South Mountain Reservation and our largest park is the 350-acre Branch Brook Park. In addition to the numerous athletic fields, we have five dog parks, an Environmental Center, Turtle Back Zoo and a castle— Kip’s Castle.

What and where are some new programs happening in the Parks for spring/summer? The Pandemic caused us to cancel all of the events that usually take place throughout our Parks System. Now that restrictions are loosening, we are rescheduling our programming. Residents can expect to celebrate the Fourth of July with our Fireworks Spectacular, our Free Summer Concert Series is returning in August, and our children’s Fishing Derby is coming this month. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg! What is something we may not know about the Parks? Last year, the Essex County Parks System celebrated its 125th anniversary, but we had to cancel our year-long schedule of activities to commemorate the milestone because of the Pandemic. What if any new construction has been done to the Parks and where? Essex County Executive Joe DiVincenzo did not take a break from improving our Parks while battling the Coronavirus. We opened new exhibits for our Bald Eagle and Otters at Turtle Back Zoo, expanded the All-Access Playground with additional apparatus for wheelchair-bound children, repaired the rubberized walking track in Watsessing Park, continued improvements at Hendricks Field Golf Course, and moved forward with the construction of a new community center in Weequahic Park. Groverprovide Cleveland Park Please some insights as to

what is happening now, and in the future for the Park System including plans for future development. One of the ongoing initiatives for our County Executive is to make sure the Essex County Parks System meets the needs of our residents and contributes to their quality of life. In the works are updated exhibits for the Red Panda and Leopard at Turtle Back Zoo, synthetic turf renovations to the soccer fields in Branch Brook Park and Riverfront Park, and construction of a practice facility for The First Tee program at Hendricks Field, to name just a few. How has the Pandemic affected Park use? During this worldwide Pandemic, we learned just how important our open spaces are and how closely they influence our quality of life. During the last 14 months, we watched as the usage of our parks and reservations skyrocketed. With restaurants, museums, libraries, concert halls, movie theaters and other entertainment venues closed, the public turned to the green meadows, hiking trails and spectacular vistas to occupy their time, spend extra energy and escape the anxiety and uncertainty caused by the Coronavirus. CELEBRATING 100 YEARS

Cedar Hill Golf & Country Club is Still Going Strong and Thriving By Jackie Schatell

E

stablished in 1921, Cedar Hill Golf & Country Club (CHCC) of Livingston has come a long way in 100 years. It has survived the Great Depression, the Great Recession and COVID-19—not many establishments can say that. The club is now thriving, but this has not always been the case, in fact, it was in danger of closing just seven or so years ago. A quest to revitalize the club began then and the results have been sensational. CHCC is now regarded as a “home away from home” for more than 400 members. It is a family-centric club that features a challenging 18-hole golf course; a totally refurbished Tennis Center with three Har-Tru tennis courts; and a pool area equipped with a full bar, locker rooms, flat screen TVs and a snack bar.

MySuburbanEssex.com 37

Many of the enhancements were implemented under emeritus Club President Jeff Feldman’s six-year reign and are continuing strong with his successor Gregg Melnick. Feldman credits renown General Manager Weisser Millien for bringing “immense joy” to CHCC’s members, who have benefitted from the “relaxed atmosphere, innovative events and parties” introduced by Millien. His events rival those of private clubs in NYC. The events are famous for top notch entertainment, cuisine and fun... some even with after parties. Millien gives a preview for the rest of the year. “We’re celebrating our 100th year anniversary throughout the rest of the year with special parties and events that will include a Black & White Party; Caribbean and College nights at the pool as well as a Mascarade Ball. We’ll sprinkle in local bands and comedy nights, an evening on Broadway, and dual pianos in between.” Millien explains, “My mission is to provide members and guest an experience they won’t find anywhere else.” CHCC has enjoyed a host of improvements and re-imagined spaces. “Two redesigned golf holes as well as eminent course improvements are taking CHCC’s golf course to a whole new level, providing us with a real ‘wow’ factor,” states Feldman. According to Melnick, “The tennis community has been fully activated and reengaged almost overnight thanks to a new robust program that includes Cardio Tennis, an hour long program of tennis drills and challenges set to music.”

Melnick is proud of the beautifully furnished expanded patio with fire pits. He is particularly excited with the new outdoor room, featuring a functioning pergola that seats more than 150 people. “What is unique is that the louvers can electronically open and close, practically eliminating cancelled events due to inclement weather. Underneath the pergola you’ll find ceiling fans, large flat screen TVs along with LED lights and a sound system. We always say that it is the best outdoor restaurant in Livingston,” he boasts. Cedar Hill has always excelled at dining, so it comes as no surprise that even the food has been elevated with expanded seafood and contemporary American cuisine, paired with experimental dishes and beautiful presentations. “Our culinary team has done an unbelievable job in bringing a new mastery to the food for all pallets and dietary restrictions,” comments long time member Larry Goren. According to Feldman, “CHCC has been here through thick and thin for its members as an escape from the everyday and as a ‘home away from home.’ We’re excited to be able to continue to innovate into the future.” Melnick adds, “Most importantly—the members are happy!” June 2021

ASA for Children of Essex County (CASA Essex) promotes the welfare of children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect, or abandonment by providing a safety net of support, advocacy, and mentorship. CASA trains and supervises volunteers to speak up for the best interests of these children in court, to ensure that each child has the opportunity to thrive by receiving needed services and assistance while helping to move the child toward a safe and permanent home as quickly as possible. This year’s CASA Essex Golf Outing being held on June 14 at Cedar Hill Country Club in Livingston will be honoring Jill Rosenthal of West Orange who had served on the CASA Board of Trustees for six years. CASA Essex has been a huge part of Jill’s heart. “To help and be able to change a child’s life for the better in anyway has always been important to me,” she states. “Helping with fundraising events and raising awareness was a priority to me and I can’t thank the Board enough for allowing me to be part of the journey to help a child find their forever home!” Jill adds.

Lauren Siclare

Dream Big and Follow Your Inspirations

By Christine Maxwell, photo by Celestina Ando Photography

W

e have all thought of inventions or ideas for a new product or service that should exist in today’s world but oftentimes it doesn't come to fruition. Lauren Siclare, the Founder of BuckleBath is an anomaly when it comes to dreaming up an innovative and unprecedented mobile service! BuckleBath solves a common problem most parents and caretakers have; messy car seats and strollers! Siclare came up with the idea of this service coming to your driveway to clean your child’s car seat or stroller when she had the urgent need herself and there wasn’t a mobile only business solely focused on cleaning and sanitizing gear on the spot! At the time Siclare

was employed by Google and knew she needed a solid business plan to see if her idea was in fact a viable one. Fast forward to September 2019 BuckleBath is officially born, Siclare left her corporate job and is a full time entrepreneur! Immediately the market loved the new service and appointments slots were very hard to come by. Siclare knows first hand, “there is a lot of opportunity for new ideas for products and services urging those thinking about a potential business to take the next steps. Start by looking at the data, doing lots of research, talking to other potential users of the product or service and prepare to work around the clock!”

June 2021

The early success of BuckleBath has created a real need for busy parents to utilize the service across the country and BuckleBath is on track to become a nationwide franchise this summer! Siclare has built the business centered on exceptional customer service, convenience, and high quality work. As a franchisor she hopes to create jobs and many new business owners who share in the same passion for keeping children riding healthier in their car seats!

SHE GAVE ME MY LIFE BACK”

Local clinic has a modern, medical solution to treat your Peripheral Neuropathy and is seeing incredible results. “It started out as a normal outing. My wife and I had to run to the grocery store. We were driving down the road casually going over our shopping list when the car ahead of me started to slow down, anticipating the yellow light. I started to move my foot from the gas to the brake as any normal person would do when they see brake lights in front of them, but I couldn’t. I couldn’t feel my foot. The car kept moving forward, and I just couldn’t get my foot on the brake. And CRUNCH! I finally came to a stop when I hit the car in front of me.” This tragic story was shared with us by John M., a Millburn resident, who has Peripheral Neuropathy. And while no one was hurt in this accident, John M. had suffered almost every day for the past 8 years with tingling and burning in his feet until numbness set in and he could no longer feel even the brake pedal beneath his foot. “The first stage is pain,” shares Aleksandra Mihajlovic, L.Ac. of Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine. “You feel burning, tingling, sharp pains, or you feel like you’re walking on broken glass. This pain eventually subsides, and the numbness sets in. Unfortunately, with the numbness comes a lot of other problems.”

This was the case with John. “I said I wasn’t going to drive again. What if that had been a pedestrian?” It is terribly common that Peripheral Neuropathy and its debilitating symptoms interfere with a person’s ability to live their life. John was now reliant on his wife to drive him around; even the simple pleasure of cruising down to the shore or taking her out to dinner was outside his capabilities. And even more common, John’s general practitioner and several specialists told him there was nothing they could do other than prescribe him medications that would ease the pain of his Neuropathy. That’s where Aleksandra, Licensed Acupuncturist, and her staff at Sasha Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine come in. “About 75% of our current patients come to us suffering from the same condition as Mr. John,” says Aleksandra Mihajlovic, L.Ac. “They’re in constant pain from Neuropathy, and it prevents them from not only living their lives, but more importantly, it prevents them from enjoying it. Depending on the severity of their nerve damage, we typically see tremendous progress in 3-4 months of treatment. I like to say we’re in the business of making your golden years golden.”

“I can’t lie,” confides John. “I was skeptical at first. My doctor told me there was nothing that could be done, and then, there’s an acupuncturist right here in Montclair who tells me she can help. Turns out she was right. After about four months of treatments, I was able to confidently drive myself to my appointments! My wife and I celebrated by buying ourselves a new car! It’s hard to put into words how incredible this is, quite frankly, I feel like I got my life back.” While Sasha Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine specializes in acupuncture, and it’s definitely part of their protocols in treating Neuropathy, the real secret is in a more modern medical solution called ATP Resonance Biotherapy™. “This technology was originally developed by NASA to expedite healing and recovery,” shares Kathy, a patient care coordinator at the clinic. “It’s like watering a plant. ATP Resonance Biotherapy™ stimulates the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerve and provide them the proper nutrients to heal and repair.” You can learn more about Aleksandra and Sasha Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine by visiting www.SashaAcupuncture.com. If you’re ready to schedule a consultation, call 973-444-8932 and do so quickly. Sasha Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine is a very intimate clinic and the staff takes pride in their ability to take their time with each patient, so they are very limited in their ability to take on new patients.

Gigi Paralkar, DDS Livingston Family Orthodontics Fulfilling Dreams at Any Age By Christine S. Maxwell

G

igi Paralkar, DDS of Livingston Family Orthodontics has a thriving practice for area residents. Below Dr. Paralkar discusses how her patients can achieve a perfect smile at any age.

Who inspired you the most in establishing a successful orthodontic practice? My father was the most significant influence on my life ambitions and goals. An immigrant who had traveled halfway around the world to find a better life for himself and his family, he put his dreams of practice ownership on hold to offer us security. After his passing when I was in my early twenties, I decided to fulfill the dream for both of us. My father’s spirit lives on in my career as an orthodontist. His legacy is the driving force for excellence in my practice.

Can people of all ages benefit from orthodontics? Yes. People of all ages can benefit from orthodontics. Our practice sees children starting at age 7 through adolescence as well as adults. Nothing in our bodies stays completely static, and our teeth can move and shift with age. If your teeth are healthy and you maintain your dental care well, you can begin treatment at any time. Our practice has many parents who decide on their treatment after seeing the results we obtained for their children. My own parents had braces in their late forties. Recently, I had two patients in their seventies consult me about straightening their teeth. My adult patients inspire me with their zest for achieving their personal best. In my eyes, there should be no limitations on how you look or feel at any age. Livingston Family Orthodontics 201 S. y desire to work in the medical field to impact lives occurred at an early age after multiple reconstructive plastic surgeries to restore facial symmetry for nerve damage due to a cystic hygroma resection at birth. Following the completion of a breast surgical oncology fellowship at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey funded by the Breast Cancer Alliance and CR Bard, I joined the faculty at RCINJ as a breast surgeon. Prior to that, I received my undergraduate degree from Yale University and my medical degree from the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii. I completed my general surgery internship with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center at Harvard University and my residency with Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in Newark. odern, advanced, comfortable and compassionate dental care is the mainstay at D&G Dental. Med Dawoud, DMD, and partner Paula Gencarelli, DMD, perform a full range of dental procedures from cleanings to complex cosmetic and restorative dentistry. D&G Dental offers a breadth and quality of services rarely seen at a single practice, with the goal of providing patients with an oral healthcare home. Preventative, restorative and cosmetic dentistry treatments provide the care needed for patients to achieve and maintain an optimal level of oral health. The practice offers checkups and cleanings, dental bridges, implants and dentures, custom made mouthguards and oral cancer screenings. Dentistry, observes Dr. Dawoud, is an ever-evolving field. Technological advances have changed the way it is practiced. The most up-to-date equipment has been incorporated into the practice. Intraoral cameras provide an immediate and magnified view of teeth and soft tissues; these images are then displayed on a chairside monitor. Digital X-rays reduce the amount of radiation patients are exposed to by as much as 90 percent. The practice uses 3D cone beam technology to provide a precise view of the entire structure of the mouth and surrounding tissues. Dental lasers are used to treat periodontal disease and to guide the placement of implants. The dentists attend extensive continuing education programs to stay abreast of the advances. The result is performing the safest, least invasive procedures with the least amount of discomfort to patients. The staff at D&G Dental carry out their responsibilities in unison with the dentists. They are carefully chosen based on their level of training and expertise to provide the best experience for patients. Drs. Dawoud and Gencarelli take pride in the practice’s unique blend of high-quality dentistry and unsurpassed service. The Friendly Neighborhood Pharmacy By Janis Hashe

R

ebecca Ruditser, pharmacist and owner of Livingston Pharmacy, got a job at 16 in a community pharmacy, and by 24, had opened her own. Her business motto: “Big enough to serve you, small enough to know you,” sums up what experience has taught her about the advantages of a community pharmacy. “How well you connect with patients also optimizes healthcare,” she said. She also noted that big chain pharmacies “have very little hold” on which drugs and medications they can order, while she purchases American-made products whenever possible. The pharmacy does its own compounding. Livingston Pharmacy has offered COVID-19 testing throughout the pandemic, and is now offering vaccinations. Free delivery and curbside pick-up of prescriptions and products are available. Calls are already coming in for summer camp prescriptions, Ruditser said, and walk-in traffic, giving her a chance to greet longtime customers in person, is steadily returning. David Lattimer Founder, David Chad Beauty Parlor

W

hen asked about some background, David Lattimer of David Chad Beauty Parlor states, “I could concoct a perfect story, but that would be far from the truth.” Lattimer has been doing hard for a least “100 years,” and has had some ups and downs along the way. At the young age of 25 he opened a salon in Montville, which quickly became a huge success, only to have it shattered based on some of his horrible life choices. His second salon in Nutley did not work out due to the difficult commute. Thanks to his caring wife and incredible two children, he eventually opened a small salon on the corner of Gould and Blooomfield Avenues in Caldwell. This location was perfect until even with a renovation, he outgrew the space. That growth brought him to his current location… a truly architectural dream housed in the Grover House building on Bloomfield Avenue in Caldwell. Lattimer explains, “It is not just the structure that makes this place amazing… it is the people.” He adds, “From our staff to our clients, is what makes this salon the coolest salon on the planet.” Lattimer’s salon, David Chad Beauty Parlor, now boasts 22 employees who push the beauty envelope to bring clients the upmost best in style, design and overall customer service. When asked what makes you tick?, he replied, “That’s simple, having clients of any age walk through our door with questions or doubts about themselves, and then leaving confident, secure and beautiful. Lattimer’s passion that led into the beauty industry is about ‘making people feel good.’ David Lattimer

Lasting Results: The HCG Diet

Dr. RoseAnn Giannella

By Christine S. Maxwell

Cosmetic & Gental Dental Care

C

W

osmetic & Gentle Dental Care’s RoseAnn Giannella, DMD, brings to her practice a full scope of general and cosmetic dentistry expertise. Having earned a DMD degree from Fairleigh Dickinson School of Dentistry in 1986, she has been a solo practitioner offering dental care for adults and children since 1996.

hen it comes to weight loss, it’s often a struggle to find the perfect diet, and for many, keeping the weight off is the biggest challenge. Dr. Sean McLaughlin, DC, of Dr. Sean McLaughlin Fairfield Wellness and Physical Therapy (FFWPT), strongly champions the HCG Diet for breakthrough weight loss that works. The diet consists of an eating plan and a natural amino acids supplement (hCG) that aids in fat burning, hunger curving, and digestive breakdown. It assures longlasting weight loss for those who follow this 4-6 week program where clients can lose anywhere between 20-50 pounds.

With years of experience, Dr. Giannella is devoted to all phases of dentistry and has made it a top priority to deliver quality care with minimal stress and discomfort for patients of all ages.

“The beauty of this diet is its simplicity. You choose your foods from a recommended list and take the liquid supplement that’s quickly absorbed in the mouth before each meal. Twenty minutes later, you enjoy your meals,” states Dr. McLaughlin. “The main benefit of the eating plan is that it tackles the ‘locked-in’ types of fat most weight loss regimes miss.” Dr. McLaughlin provides weekly meetings and text message support to participants. Learn more about the HCG Diet at FFWPT.com.

Dr. Giannella’s practice offers a wide range of procedures to correct cosmetic dental problems —giving patients the best smile possible. Some of her techniques include teeth whitening, dental bonding, and porcelain veneers. General dentistry treatments such as fillings, dental implants, and crowns are also done, providing patients with healthier teeth and therefore healthy lives.

A LOOK AT CHILDREN’S EYE HEALTH For children, good vision involves so much more than simply seeing well. Vision disorders are in fact the numberone handicapping condition among them. According to the American Optometric Association (AOA), upward of 94% of children with reading difficulties have reduced visual skills, and approximately 20% of school-aged children may be affected to some degree by learning-related vision disorders.

V

isual problems affecting eye focus, alignment and movement, for instance, often go undetected and can make learning hard and lead to other eye problems. Furthermore, children struggling with their vision often are misdiagnosed as having ADD/ADHD and are academically misplaced in the classroom. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that school-age children have a complete medical eye exam by their fourth birthday, and routine eye exams approximately every two years thereafter. In addition to the pediatrician’s office, eye exams can be obtained through community centers, school programs, health fairs, and volunteer organizations accessible through the website preventblindness.org. Parents can play a key role in uncovering eye disorders by keeping a watch on their kids for such signs as wandering or crossed eyes, squinting and disinterest in reading. continued on page 62

A LOOK AT CHILDREN’S EYE HEALTH continued from page 60

The good news is that many sight deficiencies can be corrected through vision therapy—individualized, nonsurgical treatment that is typically administered by an optometrist. Short-term and goal-oriented, vision therapy addresses a child’s entire visual-motor system, which includes the brain’s ability to process what the eyes see. It incorporates the use of such tools as prisms, filters, lenses and computers. Many scientific studies have demonstrated its effectiveness in treating such common optical disorders as amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus (crossed eyes). Your child may be a candidate for vision therapy if he/she: • tires easily when reading • transposes numbers and letters when reading or writing • frequently loses his place or skips text • uses her finger as a reading guide

• writes sloppily • has trouble copying from the board or book • tilts the head or covers one eye to see • blinks or squints excessively • has a short attention span Sunglasses not only protect the eyes from the sun, but from wind and debris as well. They also enable the eyes to better and more quickly adapt to changes in light between the outdoors and indoors.

• is prone to clumsiness

Protect Their Eyes When Outdoors Just as it’s important for adults to wear sunglasses, so too is it for kids, especially in the summer months when there are more hours of sunlight. Even when it’s cloudy or not very sunny, there are still UV rays that can damage the eyes. Excessive and/or direct exposure to the sun can lead to an array of conditions that include cataracts, photokeratitis (painful sunburn of the cornea, commonly known as snow blindness) and eye cancer.

When shopping for eyeglasses, look for a label indicating that they offer UV blockage. And purchase them from a department or drugstore, as sunglasses bought from street vendors may not offer enough or any protection from harmful UV rays. hen I see brick pillars at the entrance of a driveway leaning to one side it might be because the cement foundation did not go deep enough below the frost line. So when there is a cold winter and the ground shifts, it moves the foundation of the pillar. There’s a really good comparison to this and our life, business or anything that requires building. What are the fundamentals needed to build a strong foundation so we can support the activity when the environment becomes unstable? Here are a few of them:

1

Never stop planting. There is excitement when we seed for future growth, whether it’s a garden or your business. It creates new opportunities and gives you strength when other prospects don’t grow or lose their value.

2

Learn your craft well. Study everything about your profession so you attain deep knowledge. That deep understanding gives you great confidence which is one of the greatest assets when faced with adversity and a challenging environment.

3

Honesty should be at the top of the list for a foundation to stand strong. Speaking your mind might get you in trouble some times but it won’t ruin a 20 year relationship. Yet one lie in a time span of 5 seconds will do just that.

“The more one does and sees and feels, the more one is able to do, and the more genuine may be one’s appreciation of fundamental things like home, and love, and understanding companionship.”

4

100% effort all the time. I was watching a baseball game and speaking to a good friend who’s played baseball all his life. He said how disappointing it is watching one of the kids walk to first base because he thought his infield grounder would be an automatic out. You never know what could happen and you never know who’s watching.

5

Health is your wealth. Take care of your body...it’s the only one we have and for some reason we seem to take it for granted until it really matters.

6

Our attitude has to be mentioned as one of the keys to a solid foundation in life. I will leave you with one of my favorite quotes of all time by Charles Swindoll; “This may shock you, but I believe the single most significant decision I can make on a day-to-day basis is my choice of attitude. It is more important than my past, my education, my bankroll, my successes or failures, fame or pain, what other people think of me or say about me, my circumstances, or my position. Attitude is that single string that keeps me going or cripples my progress. It alone fuels my fire or assaults my hope. When my attitudes are right, there’s no barrier too high, no valley to deep, no dream to extreme, no challenge too great for me.”
