I reintroduced painting. I am mainly a sculptor, but started painting again to enjoy the meditative qualities and as a way to express myself during these trying times.
The hobby I picked up in the last six months (the last three months really!) is stand-up paddle boarding.
—Maria Lupo, Roseland
—Courtney Carroll, West Orange
When my Dad came down with COVID-19 in March and was in the hospital for two months on a ventilator, I needed something to occupy my mind and time. I started to become aware of the beautiful birds right in my backyard, which led me to want to start taking pictures of them. I had never touched a DSLR camera before March of this year. Now 6 months later, my Dad is home and healthy, and my little hobby has grown into quite a passion! I recently sold my very first print, and will be travelling to Cape May for the Audubon Festival in October. —Cheryl Colgan, Fairfield

ake a ride through West Orange and see their new program that honors the memory of local veterans. Administered by the Downtown West Orange Alliance, the “Hometown Heroes” program was designed to place banners that pay tribute to veterans. The banners serve as a living memorial to all service men and women who have served or are serving in any military branch. The Downtown West Orange Alliance began installing the banners this summer on existing utility poles in the downtown corridor. Family members or loved ones of veterans can honor their “Hometown Hero” by purchasing a banner. Banners will be displayed for at least one year and will then be returned to the sponsor who purchased it. Financial consideration will be given to qualifying veteran’s families who cannot the cost of a banner.
Toni’s Community Closet received donations of gently used clothing and housewares from the community, which will be repurposed to ensures access to these items for low-income neighbors in ways that respect their dignity and strengthens their independence. For those who are homeless or near homeless, Toni’s Kitchen regularly distributes warm sweatshirts, socks, and outerwear. Donations best suited to families will be sold at very low cost through Toni’s Community Closet, where families and students can shop with dignity. Proceeds from sales at Toni’s Community Closet are used to fund food support programs in the local community.

Making Home Let Kids Rock On SAFE & SECURE By Janis Hashe

imes have definitely changed since 1929, when Supreme Security Systems founder Sydney Bitton personally walked the streets to ensure clients’ safety. What hasn’t changed in this family-owned business is their commitment to customized service excellence, says Marketing Manager Sue Erdreich. When a homeowner contacts Supreme, a representative comes out to do a detailed assessment, asking questions such as, “Do you have children or pets? Do you vacation a lot? Do you want to operate your system remotely?” A proposal is then created that fits that homeowner’s needs. These run the gamut, says Erdreich, from a basic system to one including multiple cameras and sophisticated surveillance. Once a plan is confirmed, installation takes from one-to-three days in most cases. “People are often surprised at how remote access technology advancements allow them to do so much from their phones and work desktops,” says Erdreich. “Our expertise is exceptional in the marketplace.”
F
uture rock stars, rejoice. Montclair’s School of Rock is back and offering both remote and carefully distanced in-person instruction with top-notch, professional teachers.
“Kids ages 6-18, as well as adults, can learn guitar, piano, bass, drum, keyboards and singing,” says general manager Kevin March. The proprietary School of Rock method includes MONTCLAIR, NJ students enrolling in performance programs, culminating in a concert. In-person and video versions are available. “We start rehearsing in October and hope to have an in-person and a virtual concert in January.” Their method encourages students to “explore and learn songs they love” and expedites the learning process. “Our app allows students to record assignments, so teachers can hear their progress.” Eventually, students can audition for the local school’s “House Band,” and even the global “All Stars.” “I see how happy they are to be playing music together again.”

he Women’s Association for Morristown Medical Center’s 19th Mansion in May signature fundraiser previously scheduled to be held in May, will now be open to the public as its “Splendor in September” Designer Showhouse and Gardens. The event will take place at Tyvan Hill in New Vernon through October 4, 2020. “We are thrilled that the owner of Tyvan Hill has graciously agreed to extend our stay, enabling us to present our Mansion in May 2020 “Splendor in September” fundraiser and to deliver on our pledge to benefit the expansion of the Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute at Morristown Medical Center,” said Patricia O’Connor, Co-Chair. Kathy Ross, Co-Chair, stated, “The number one concern has and continues to be the health and safety of the over 1,500 volunteers and our visitors who help make Mansion in May a success. Our delayed opening will enable our visitors to tour this magnificent country estate

Calavano of Monk’s Kitchen & Bath Design Studio. Her bathroom design, The Gentleman’s Privy, at the Mansion in May 2020 “Splendor in September” Designer Showcase and Gardens at Tyvan Hills, is no exception. The name comes from the noun meaning private place. “I wanted to hold true to the original use of the space, and the clues from the mansion point to this space being the gentleman’s bathroom,” she states. “Most importantly I am pulling inspiration from the stunning acreage just outside the windows.”
Photos by Dannette Merchant and have an opportunity to see the ‘inspirations’ of over 50 talented interior and landscape designers come to life in one lovely setting.” Tyvan Hill, a 10,000 square foot U-shaped brick and stone house mansion features beautiful details, such as a curved staircase, paneling and elegant moldings, as well as an outdoor pool and pool house. The estate was designed by the prominent New York architectural firm of Peabody, Wilson & Brown for John Wesley Castles Jr. and his wife, Dorothea Bradford Smith, and built between 1928 and 1929. “In an effort to provide visitors with a pleasant and safe visit to Tyvan Hill, new admissions and safety protocols are in place,” says Katie Nolle, President, Women’s Association for Morristown Medical Center. “We are following all CDC, State and Local Covid-19 guidelines to safeguard the safety and well-being of our visitors, designers and volunteers.” Tickets are $40 online and are sold in time slots from 10am to 3pm. www.mansioninmay.org.
There are wood cabinets, quartz countertops, green walls, polished nickel metal and matte black accents, all working together to create a harmonious whole. She adds, “I wanted the space to reference the building’s history, while also maintaining a sense of modern flair.” Bathrooms, without the right treatment, can be cold and stark spaces. The warmth of the beautiful walnut and jewel tones counteract this. The pewter emerald colors are confident and help create a cozy feeling. The paler whites help keep the room light and open. Monk’s provides an end-to-end solution for any remodeling or home improvement project. Their showrooms are filled with displays and samples of high-quality products including cabinetry, countertops, tile, hardware, fixtures, flooring, windows and doors. They offer a full-service solution, meaning they order materials and provide delivery, pull permits, and handle the installation. And, unlike most showrooms, their design services are entirely complimentary.

MEND Launches “Fresh Food Hub” Using Grant from Impact100 Essex
M
eeting Essential Needs with Dignity (MEND) has recently launched its “Fresh Food Hub” using funds from a transformative $120,000 grant from Impact100 Essex. The local organization will use the 4,000 sq. ft. facility in Orange as a centralized location from which it will source, transport, refrigerate, pack, and distribute more fresh and healthy food to food insecure people throughout Essex County. In addition to using the Impact100 Essex award to partially fund the physical space, MEND also purchased a cargo van, dubbed “The Sweet Pea,”
18

to help with additional food sourcing and food transportation needs. The van complements the “The Green Bean,” a converted school bus already used for community outreach, large-scale food drives, and free farmers market-style distributions at pantry sites. With COVID-19 dramatically increasing the logistical challenges already facing emergency food providers, and the ongoing need for greater fresh food access in our community, the Hub launch was accelerated. MEND’s Executive Director, Robin Peacock says, “We are thrilled to have this space! The increasing demand for healthy food has long been raised by the pantry managers as an issue they would like MEND support, given their own logistical challenges. The new Hub will help us expand our collaborations with fresh food partners and significantly increase the amount of fresh food the pantries and other organizations can distribute.” Early Fall 2020
Jabbar Abdi, Chairman of the MEND Board of Trustees, added, “With the intense spike in hunger across Essex County, and more people turning to MEND pantries for support, MEND has had to increase our volume of donations and food distribution. Now, with the Fresh Food Hub, we can do more to serve people in need.” Last year, MEND member pantries served over 160,000 people. The organization focuses on alleviating hunger and addressing its root causes by supporting a network of 20 food pantries in Bloomfield, East Orange, Irvington, Maplewood, Montclair, Newark, Orange, South Orange, and West Orange. MEND provides its member pantries with fresh and healthy food, funds, a network of volunteers, and a collaborative forum for pantry managers to connect and work together on broader hunger- and poverty-related issues. For more information about MEND and the Fresh Food Hub, visit mendnj.org.

ink Jewels owner Marie Khoury knows that people “always remember how you made them feel” the first time they stop into the store. “Everyone is welcome here,” she says, whether or not they buy anything on that first visit. Pink Jewels, now 10 years old, is a “lifestyle boutique,” carrying clothing, bags, home decor items, gifts, and, of course, jewelry. Khoury selects merchandise for both quality and value. “We have the best prices for everything.” It’s not unusual for a customer to come in looking for one thing and leave with some of Pink Jewels’ “hidden treasures.” Customer service includes calling or texting when something comes in that is perfect for an individual. We’re constantly getting new items in,” says Khoury—which is why it’s fun to drop in often.

A Helping Hand During Difficult Times
F
or years, NCJW/Essex Center for Women (CFW) has championed the needs of women, families and children by offering classes, careers services, workshops and other programs. One client, D.K., experienced the Center’s support firsthand during the COVID-19 pandemic. “When I was first going through my divorce, I found the support I needed to start a new career path at the CFW,” says D.K. She participated in their Back 2 School Store, Career Closet, Job Clubs, Empower Hours and computer classes. However, when the pandemic hit, she was left without a job and was unable to access the State’s Unemployment Insurance. Luckily, the CFW began providing safe, online programming with other women going through similar struggles; as well as other options for support. “The CFW Empower Group helped me keep trying for unemployment, and we’ve received food from their pantry,
but the biggest gift is the food cards from the CFW. The food cards enabled me and my children to select items we would choose for ourselves, and made me feel like I was still working and providing for my kids without worrying about how I was going to pay.” Reflecting on how the Center has helped her, D.K. says, “The NCJW Center for Women is a blessing in my life. I wouldn’t know where I would be without their support.”

hile Job Haines Home has expanded significantly since its inception more than 100 years ago, its three core founding principles of Individuality, Dignity, and Independence have remained steadfast. “We encourage all of our residents to be involved in making personal choices in every aspect of their care and to work with our supportive staff to ensure that their individualized needs are met to their satisfaction. From decorating their apartment to participating in round-theclock services and our many wonderful social programs, each resident should feel that they are in control of their own life,” states Reineen Dohman, Director of Marketing. Job Haines offers various levels of care to its residents. Whether the individual resides in assisted living, long-term care, sub-acute rehabilitation, or respite care, each receives the same compassionate care. Job Haines Home is a five-star rated nursing home and is Medicaid/ Medicare-certified in New Jersey.
“We celebrate and take pride in our diversity and we share one common goal: our residents’ well-being.
— Reineen Dohman
Job Haines Home offers quality continuing care to all residents, regardless of finances. They have a private, in-house subsidy program for those already residing in assisted living who have exhausted their finances, so there is never a time when they have to ask a resident to leave. “We celebrate and take pride in our diversity and we share one common goal: our residents’ wellbeing. Our employees are happy, and that is an important reason why our residents love living here,” remarks Dohman.

Delivering Birthday Love During Lockdown
A
t the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Louis Mauriello, owner of Champion Waste, heard a story from a friend about a little boy whose birthday party was cancelled, but still made special when his father arranged for pickup trucks, vans and dump trucks to do a “birthday drive-by.” After hearing this, Mauriello was encouraged to offer the same option to his own local community of the West Essex area and surrounding towns. Mauriello began posting on social media that Champion Waste’s trucks were available to drive by and deliver birthday wishes during the lockdown, “it basically took on a life on its own,” he stated. Since then, Champion Waste has done a number of socially distanced drive-bys bringing smiles to children’s faces on their birthdays. The drive-bys are not for children only… some adults who have felt lonely while being stuck at home have requested their own drive-by, and, of course, Mauriello and his team happily oblige.
This venture has turned into a family event—his son Marco drives their newest truck to the drive-bys, and his wife Michell made a birthday sign to hang on the truck. Says Mauriello, “We’ve established new friendships and business relationships from this and the response from the public was overwhelming and very humbling.” Champion Waste is a family owned and operated, full-service property maintenance company that specializes in residential and commercial clean-outs. They are dedicated to exceeding their customers’ expectations and tailor their services to their individual needs.

Gikas Painting: The People’s Contractor By Christine S. Maxwell, photo by Dan Epstein
R
estoring Victorian and older houses to their original splendor is the mission of Gikas Painting in Montclair. Below, owner George Mihalis discusses the Gikas way of rejuvenating local communities one home at a time:
How did Gikas Painting begin? Gikas started 36 years ago as a painting company. We worked with Victorian and older homes, painting and detailing them. Then we started to focus on carpentry and renovation; especially rejuvenating, restoring and upgrading old homes. We remodeled bathrooms, kitchens, and porches. As we expanded our services, our market share increased. Now, we work with 90% of the older homes in the area.
Which services are the most popular? Our most popular projects are porches, steps, and front entrances to homes. I began as a porch builder with the purpose to upgrade and to rebuild porches the way they were supposed to be. Sometimes we 26

work on porches that nobody wants to touch, due to the strict zoning laws and requirements. Porch building is like plastic surgery–they both require delicate and careful rebuilding. Roofing is another big project. Nobody knows roofing for older homes better than Gikas. It is so important to keep the same characteristics and details as the original grandeur of the house. Complete renovations are another focus. We renovate bathrooms, floors, attics, basements and do complete floor refinishing and additions. Painting is also our bread and butter. Painting after renovation, both indoor and outdoor, puts the finishing touches on Victorian and colonial homes.
I know real estate in the Montclair area and what clients need to do or not to do to sell homes. If the home needs upgrading or is out of code, I let them know. The house may need a tune-up— from electrical wiring, roofing to siding, and we find ways to correct the issues. Many times, by just following our advice, the client will get the most money for their home. I have added value to many homes in the area.
What distinguishes Gikas from its competitors? We know the houses better than anyone. We do our work with integrity. People appreciate our honesty. One customer said that I am the “people’s contractor.” I work for the client, always with their interests in mind.
What does Gikas the Wizard mean? Our work philosophy known by our customers is creatively carried from project to project enhancing their home with texture, colors and details in order to comprehensively restore its exterior. Early Fall 2020

n response to the pandemic, last March Lacordaire swiftly created a high-end virtual learning curriculum for PK through twelfth grades. Students engaged in classes five days a week in their core courses, as well as their extracurricular subjects. The school has implemented new health policies and sanitizing procedures for the entire community so as to make this school year as stress-free and safe as possible. “A huge advantage that we have in protecting the health of our students and staff is our small size,” says Saydi Callahan Keefe, Director of Admissions “Our entire campus is home to approximately 250 students who attend very small sized classes. We take the wellness of our community quite seriously. We are a family.” Lacordaire Academy is a Catholic college preparatory school with a coeducational PK to eighth grade and an all-womens ninth through twelfth grade student body. The Academy was established by the Sisters of St. Dominic of Caldwell in 1920. The school is rooted in the Catholic Dominican tradition, which promotes social justice, community service and environmental understanding. e’re a different type of Mediterranean restaurant,” says Vincent Leone, owner of Mezza Mediterranean. First, there is the unique complement of Israeli, Moroccan and Tunisian influences, culled from the experience of Mezza’s Israeli executive chef. Leone describes it as a tapestry of flavors. Add to that traditional fare spiced up with, well, fresh herbs and spices. Importantly, notes Leone, “There is something for everyone.” Mediterranean cuisine has been lauded for promoting heart health. “The lunch menu has many options for those who are health conscious,” promises Leone. He points to a wide selection of salads and hummus bowls. Also, on the lighter side are the restaurant’s signature Mezza dips, available at lunch and dinner, served with Israeli pita. Patrons usually opt for a taste of three. Freshness and quality are paramount concerns for Leone. “Our seafood, meats and produce are of the highest quality.”

On Trend, with Roots in Classic Styling By Deborah Schapiro, photo by Dan Epstein

he term “beauty parlor” has a quaint, old-fashioned sound, but David Chad Beauty Parlor in Caldwell is anything but. According to Master Stylist Taylor Alexis, a color specialist who recently joined David Chad Beauty Parlor after years as a stylist in Manhattan’s SoHo, “We’re always on trend, but we also always go back to the roots of good basic hair styling.” David Chad offers balayage (a technique where color is painted on the hair to create a more gradual, less striped effect), glaze, toner and Brazilian blowout (a treatment that creates a protective protein layer around the hair shaft, resulting in a smoother, less frizzy texture). Naturally, the salon also offers more traditional highlighting options, as well as men’s color.
Speaking of men, Alexis adds, “We have a mixed clientele, so we do haircuts for men, women, teens and kids.” David Chad Beauty Parlor does bridal and formal hair styling and makeup application in addition to general haircuts and coloring. The salon also offers a wide range of waxing and other services. These include different types of facials, as well as eyelash extensions, tinting and lifting (permanently curling). Alexis, an eight-year veteran of the beauty industry, appreciates the elegant architecture and sophisticated interior of the David Chad salon. She says, “I love working with a great group of people in this glamorous atmosphere.”

A Home-Grown Hospitality Enterprise Ushers in a 3rd Generation
E
verybody knows Calandra’s for its bakeries, delicious bread and scrumptious cakes and treats, but did you know that Calandra’s is a local familyowned and operated hospitality empire?
Calandra’s not only has three bakeries; but it also has three award-winning restaurants – Il Vecchio Cafe at Calandra’s Italian Village in Caldwell, Mediterranean Grill and Cucina Calandra in Fairfield; La Taverna Bar and Lounge in Caldwell, and four hotels: Hampton Inn & Suites, Best Western Plus, Meadowlands Hampton Inn and The Holland Hotel. with over 800 employees.
Luciano and Ortenza Calandra
“Team Calandra never stops,” says Vice President Kristin Calandra, who, along with her brother Thomas “Tom,” vice president, and cousin, Luciano III, vice president, are part of the third generation of Calandra family members. Calandra’s Bakery, was started in 1962 by Luciano Calandra, an Italian immigrant after just five years in America, and his wife Ortenza. Later Anthony and Luciano Jr. were brought into the business and instilled with the motto that still stands today, “Confidence. Safety. Quality. Trusted. Calandra’s.” continued from page 4

Bread is made fresh three times a day at three different locations – Fairfield, Caldwell, and Newark. With three shifts a day – it is actually baked nine times a day. Between all the types of breads made at each bakery including French baguettes, Italian bastones, Italian panella, rings, twists, semolina breads and more –1500 loaves of bread, 500 per shift, are made daily at each bakery. The bread continues to be hand-made, using Luciano’s original recipe of just four all-natural ingredients – flour, water, salt, and heat. “With Calandra’s bread, you always know what you are eating,” says Kristin. “You know your family and children are eating an all-natural, no preservative product.” It is delivered fresh daily to over 300 supermarkets across the tri-state area, numerous restaurants and delis, over 100 wedding and event venues and banquet halls, and many sports arenas including MetLife Stadium, Prudential Center, Yankees Stadium, and the Red Bull Arena. Aside from bread during high season, each bakery makes about 50 wedding cakes a week. There is a dedicated wedding cake concierge at each location that brides and grooms can make appointments with for cake tastings, where they can sample all the different flavors. Kristin Calandra
As Tom, Kristin and Luciano III assess the business and make plans for the future, Tom says he feels “blessed, prepared, and full of prospective from the last two generations at the helm” to take on the challenge. He also hopes that one day, “Every cake on every table, whether it is a birthday cake at home, a wedding cake at a venue or one bought at a supermarket, is a Calandra’s cake.” One of his main goals is to streamline Calandra’s line of cakes, and to become as well-known for their cakes, as they are for their bread. Kristin, who began working with her family in her teens, and went locally to college so she could commute home to work nights and weekends at Calandra’s, says she loves everything about the business from “working as a hostess, to serving drinks, and working side-by-side with the staff in the bakery, as well as working with her family.” She says, “there is not only a tight family bond with her family, there is one with the staff too.”

I am excited for our family business to continue being a trusted part of our communities and to continue being a name that customers are proud to support.”

Loving Vets for Pets By Janis Hashe
V
erona Animal Hospital has won six “Best of Essex” awards. One of the main reasons for that, says founding veterinarian Dr. Anthony Scriffignano, is an ongoing learning process that enables their vets to keep up with advances in their field. For example, ten years ago, research proved that as many as 32 percent of apparently healthy pets had underlying medical problems, including liver and kidney disease and thyroid disorders. Dr. Scriffignano and staff at both VAH and sister facility Montclair Animal Hospital began routinely recommending wellness blood panels that could discover these ailments before the pets showed any signs of illness. “We also ask about the lifestyle of the pet,” Dr. Scriffignano says, “Are they indoor/outdoor? Will they be boarded and groomed? All this determines what vaccines they need.” Research has also revealed that a pet’s aging process is different from the common assumption–such as one dog year is equivalent to seven human years–and their medical care needs to be adjusted based upon this new information on pet aging. VAH also offers acupuncture and Chinese herbology. “The development of these special branches of veterinary science is giving pets nearly human quality care,” Dr. Scriffignano says,

“We also refer pets to many different specialists including the new field of veterinary behavior.” Dr. Scriffignano emphasizes that the economics of running a veterinary hospital are very unique. For each doctor there is a support staff of 5 to 6 employees, including receptionists, assistants, and veterinary technicians. Most pet owners do not realize that this has a major impact on fees. So although the cost of quality vet care may seem high to some, they are charging a fair rate for services. “In my hospitals, our philosophy is ‘We treat each pet as if he/she was our own.’”

MEET ROB3RT The Silverstrom Group’s New Assistant Photo by Dan Epstein
T
he Silverstrom Group has a new addition to their team! Rob3rt, a robotic dental surgery assistant, is the latest addition to their state-of-the-art facility that uses the most advanced technology available. Here, Dr. Silverstrom discusses the new technology and how it will improve their practice.
Rob3rt
Who is Rob3rt? Rob3rt is a robotic dental surgery assistant. You can think of it like a combination of lane assist and GPS in your car––it keeps dental clinicians exactly where they need to be and guides dental implants to exactly the right position. We already use robotics every day in our lab, for digital impressions, digital milling, and digital laser treatments. Rob3rt goes above and beyond, offering faster surgery, faster recovery, and a minimally invasive procedure, due to its GPS-like guidance.
Why is it better?
Rob3rt allows our surgeons to provide the most minimally invasive surgical options, which is just one of many ways we are consistently making patient treatment better… Why add Rob3rt to your team? We are always looking for innovative ways to raise our standards and provide the most advanced level of patient treatment out there. Rob3rt offers a simple digital workflow and real-time patient tracking for a safer, faster, and more comfortable procedure. It provides our specialists with information specific to each patient’s teeth, creating a treatment plan that is absolutely personalized. The advanced technology makes procedures more efficient and precise, and cuts down on both the length of the procedure and recovery, reducing the healing period and patient discomfort, for a faster return to healthy dental function.
Rob3rt represents an unprecedented level of instrument precision and control that provides a vastly improved level of care for our patients, but he’s not replacing our surgeons and he doesn’t perform surgery. The dental surgeon retains control at all times, holding on to and guiding Rob3rt throughout each procedure, combining the surgeon’s clinical expertise with the benefits of robotic guided precision. Rob3rt allows our surgeons to provide the most minimally invasive surgical options, which is just one of many ways we are consistently making patient treatment better––by offering the latest tools in advanced dental technology, resulting in minimized pain, speedier recoveries, and improved longterm results compared to traditional surgical methods. It’s less invasive, less costly, and more precise. It’s a future level of care that’s available to patients today.

t is always important to keep your body functioning at its best. Since COVID-19, Fairfield Wellness and Physical Therapy (FFWPT) has seen as uptick in patients looking to enhance their immune systems. Chiropractor Dr. Sean McLaughlin, along with physical therapists Dr. Katie Zubicki and James Bonardi, MPT, and acupuncturist Morgan Reade, work together to provide the comprehensive wellness programs to do so. Customized plans allow patients to walk out feeling stronger, healthier and more confident each day. “When your body is functioning properly, your immune system is at its peak,” says Dr. Sean. The team strongly advise for regular chiropractic adjustments to allow the nervous system–which controls all functions of the body including the immune system–to perform at a balanced level. Explains patient Olympia P., “Chiropractors do more than just back and neck adjustments. They’re about total body wellness. Whether I have a cold or a sinus infection, I leave feeling so much better. I also take my children to see him for regular “care” that improves their overall health.” Physical therapy & acupuncture mesh perfectly with chiropractic to keep the body in balance and decrease susceptibility to

Crane’s Mill Continues the NEIGHBORLY Tradition By Christine S. Maxwell
F
or more than 200 years, Crane’s Mill has been an excellent neighbor to West Caldwell residents. Among its many functions, the old Mill was once a sawmill and a feed mill. Now resting in its glory, the Mill stands majestically in Allaire State Park in Monmouth County as a tribute to times past. Currently occupying the same property as the former Mill, Crane’s Mill Continuing Care Retirement Community, established in 1998, pays homage to its predecessor and continues service to the community.
“Knowing our residents and providing the best level of service to them has always been our number one priority,” states Christina BrophyGoldsmith, Director of Independent Living. “We are a five-star facility in New Jersey, and our staff takes the time to know all residents, their needs, and their families.”
Crane’s Mill offers living options to its approximately 300 residents on beautiful acreage designated as a certified wildlife habitat. Depending on the level of continuing care that each resident may need, they may live in the independent living apartments or cottages, the assisted living area, the memory support area, or the nursing home. Healthcare services offered include skilled nursing, rehabilitation, and hospice. The facility boasts a large wellness area with a pool and a gym for residents. Housekeeping and maintenance are among the comprehensive services available at no additional cost.
Independent living resident Cheryl Friedman concurs, “During this time of uncertainty and fear of what is happening in our world, residing here at Crane’s Mill has been a blessing. There are no words to express how grateful I am to be here and how appreciative I am for the wonderful staff we have!”

TAKE A MAGICAL WALK THROUGH SOUTH MOUNTAIN’S
“FairTrail”
Photos by Cathleen Black
V
acations and day trips might be different this fall season, but that does not mean there aren’t some exciting places to explore in North Jersey. One local spot brings a touch of magic to the beauty of nature… South Mountain Reservation’s “Fairy Trail.” In what feels like it’s out of a storybook, a section of the reservation’s Rahway Trail is inhabited by fairies. Along the path, spanning half a mile, lay delicate “fairy houses.” Found in tree hollows and roots, these magical, miniature homes are made from branches, stones and dried fungi. People of all ages have marveled for years over these special additions that have transformed the path into a hidden gem.
About ten years ago, the fairy houses began popping up on the South Mountain Reservation’s trail. Therese Ojibway, a local artist, created the “Fairy Trail” after walking the trail became a favorite activity for her and her autistic son. After noticing the interesting root formations and hollows, they began to add “fairy things” and ended up integrating fairy houses into the environment. Tiny chairs, tables and swings all become part of the trail, creating a wondrous world for fairies and humans alike. Says Ojibway, “The Fairy Trail is great for kids to get outside and away from electronics, especially during COVID-19. Going for a walk in the woods is a great way to get together safely with friends. The Fairy Trail provides a good introduction to hiking because children are so motivated to explore the woods to find fairy houses. They get to see lots of plants and animals, as they experience the magic of discovering where the fairies live. I prefer not to have people leave fairy figures, because it’s important for children to use their imaginations.”
Early Fall 2020
Today, the Fairy Trail is still maintained by Ojibway, who volunteers with South Mountain Reservation to preserve the natural environment. In order to keep the trail a sustainable place where families can explore the outdoors, they have a “Leave No Trace” policy wherein visitors leave the environment as they find it. They are also working on implementing other ways to educate visitors about walking on the trail, so they can continue to enjoy its magic. Ojibway notes that having so many people visit has an impact on the environment. Plans are underway for restoration and improvements along the trail. “It is overwhelming to see how the trail has taken off since its creations,” says Ojibway. “It can be time consuming to maintain, but it’s worth every minute.” To find the Fairy Trail, enter Locust Grove Parking or enter 197 Glen Ave., Millburn into your GPS. The Trailhead starts to the left of the parking area along the Rahway Trail. You will see a large Fairy Trail Welcome sign at this point. Remember to stay on the path, where you can see the fairy houses and protect the vegetation!

MD1
™ Bringing the Emergency
Department to the Patient
M
D1 Program - better known as MD1™️ - is a nonprofit organization which deploys specialized doctors to the scenes of emergencies throughout New Jersey. When a patient is trapped in a vehicle and cannot get to a hospital quickly, MD1 Physicians deliver state-of-the-art equipment and perform advanced, life-saving procedures directly at the patient’s location. MD1 Physicians keep emergency vehicles with them at all times so they can respond quickly when requested. Services come at no charge to any patient, hospital, or healthcare system, thanks to generous donations from MD1 supporters. MD1’s capabilities include the provision of whole blood, also known as low titer O whole blood, a high quality blood product that is carried by only a handful of organizations across the country. Additional MD1 mobile capabilities include services such as ultrasounds, surgical procedures, invasive catheterizations, and dispensation of over 60 medications, including antibiotics. MD1 Physicians are emergency medicine physicians who have completed one extra year of specialized training in Emergency Medical Services (EMS), or the treatment of patients outside of the hospital. They are available to respond to emergencies across the entire state of New Jersey, 24/7. Almost every MD1 Physician was either an emergency medical technician (EMT), paramedic, firefighter, police officer, or member of the military before going to medical school, further enforcing their EMS experience, skills, and ability to work cohesively with other emergency response personnel on scene. Any first responder in New Jersey - police, fire, or EMS - can request MD1 to a location by calling a dispatch center where trained individuals are always ready to deploy MD1. MD1 services are requested primarily any time there is a delay in transporting a patient to a hospital, such as someone who is trapped in a car at the scene of a car collision or when multiple patients are injured simultaneously. For such patients who cannot be transported to the hospital in a timely manner, MD1 Physicians can be requested to the scene to provide life-saving interventions. According to Dr. Mark Merlin, CEO and Founder
MD1 Founder and CEO, Dr. Mark Merlin, first began physician response in New Jersey in 2002. He founded MD1 in 2019 to deliver free emergency services to the citizens of New Jersey.
of MD1, “Our doctors have extensive training to provide the same level of care outside of the hospital that patients would normally receive inside of the hospital, when circumstances delay transport to the hospital. By administering medications, delivery of whole blood, and performing advanced procedures in the field, right at the patient’s location, MD1 has been able to improve survival rates and save lives in New Jersey.” MD1 services are rendered without qualification to the general public in New Jersey. MD1 is an independent nonprofit organization which never charges any patient, hospital, or healthcare system for its services. The program relies heavily on donations from corporations and individuals through its 501(c)(3) foundation, as well as grants, to sustain its charitable mission.
With state-of-the-art equipment, whole blood, and over 60 medications, MD1 vehicles deliver the emergency department/ operating room directly to the patient’s location.

Remove Unwanted Hair Keeping Your FOREVER Electrical Needs Current By Janis Hashe
By Janis Hashe

“
lectrolysis is the only permanent hair removal option,” says Danielle Penn, founder of Electrolysis Beauty Lounge. “It’s FDA-approved, safe for men & women, all skin tones, hair colors and tattoos.” Electrolysis removes each individual hair—and it never grows back once the treatment plan is complete. Penn explains that hair grows in an 18-month cycle, which is why periodic treatments over an 18-to-24-month period are needed. Penn consults with new clients about their unwanted hair goals, how often they are able to come in, skin sensitivity, and their budget.
ew household essentials are more vital than a reliable, upto-date electrical system. So, whether it’s correcting a few basic problems or replacing an older home’s knob-and-tube wiring, experience is key. Rich Fisk, owner of Watts-Up Electrical, has 20 years of experience in both residential and commercial electrical work. His professional team is licensed and bonded, and the company provides free estimates and proposals. Fisk noted that an electrical upgrade can save a lot of headaches in the long run. “If the homeowner has an HVAC system, or is remodeling a kitchen or basement, an upgrade can be an excellent decision,” he says.
Strict cleaning and social distancing procedures are enforced to ensure client safety. See the full list on their website, where Penn’s “Tribe Blue” campaign can also be found. “It stands for being authentic, loyal and unique. We welcome men, women and everyone in between. Electrolysis and be done with it.” SM
Watts-Up has added a new service: installing charging stations for electric cars. “These cars are becoming more and more popular, and they require daily charging, so this is a common request now,” Fisk says. The four Watts-Up trucks can also handle emergency calls. “We are known for our customer service and getting the job done right the first time,” states Fisk.

Q&A WITH DR. GLENN SORRENTINO
Top Technologies and Treatments for Pain Photo by Dan Epstein
What makes NJ Spine & Joint unique in treating patients with pain and injuries? We have the most advanced non-surgical techniques and technologies that promote healing. We use the same state-of-the-art technology that pro sports teams use. Also, our treatments work in sync to provide the most effective results.
What kind of results do you get? We have a very high success rate with very positive results, even with patients who have tried many other methods of treatment.
What areas of the body do you treat? Head to toe. Neck, shoulders, back, arms, knees, legs, ankles, feet… sports injuries, headaches, numbness and tingling. We treat many musculoskeletal and neurological conditions.
You’re known for your cold laser treatment. How does it work? The MR4 cold laser works to repair tissue by emitting targeted beams of light energy deep into the tissue to repair and regenerate the tissue and alleviate pain. The treatment is safe and painless with no side effects.
What is your latest technology? The NormaTec recovery system, which uses air pressure massage technology to increase blood flow and speed recovery. Our athletes think it’s great how their arms and legs feel refreshed and recover more quickly.
What advice do you have for people in pain? Don’t be discouraged, even if other treatments haven’t worked for you. Call us to schedule a free consultation. We’ll get to the root of the problem and discuss how we can help get you better.

old and flu season is here, but there’s a way to help our bodies to fight off germs—acupuncture. “Acupuncture stimulates the body’s natural defense system and allows our immune system to perform better,” says Morgan Reade, of NJ Advanced Acupuncture in Caldwell and Madison.
973-740-8500 www.pupsdaycare.com
Acupuncture reduces stress and improves sleep, and both of these factors help prevent colds and flu. “Sleep is really the key to everything, along with diet and fresh air and sunlight. It’s not even a matter of getting seven hours, it’s how deep a sleep you are getting. Are you tossing and turning for hours? Then that’s not good sleep.”` There are acupuncture points all over the body. Some improve sleep, while others reduce stress. These points are connected to nerve pathways that stimulate the brain to secrete its natural hormones. “Once people try acupuncture, they tend to come back for the relaxation more than anything,” he says. Most of his clients come in once or twice a week for about four to six treatments, and then, depending on the person, they receive tune ups every two weeks to once a month. Sessions are a minimum of 30 minutes and upwards of an hour depending on the person’s condition. To complement his acupuncture practice, Morgan also offers the supplements, vitamins and Chinese herbs needed to maintain the immune system. They are part of his program for staying healthy.

Making Dreams Come True, One Milestone at a Time By Cynthia Burns, photos by Dan Epstein

elebrating the milestones in a child’s life is why Dina Tarabokija and Sandy Drazenovic have devoted themselves to a specialty boutique that caters to significant moments for newborns through age eight. Offering the ease of one-stop shopping, Once Upon A Time…A Special Occasions Boutique provides event invitations, party favors, and personalized gifts in addition to an array of clothing options. With six children between them, the owners have had their share of milestones. “There’s the first outfit to come home from the hospital in, a baptism, first birthday and Holy Communion,” notes Tarabokija. Drazenovic says Once Upon A Time caters to specialty wear for birthdays and flower girls and has one of the largest Christening and Communion departments in North Jersey. For boys they also carry an assortment of ring bearer suits and tuxedos. The pair take delight in providing exceptional products and customer service. Tarabokija says her and Drazenovic’s personalities complement each other. “Sandy is simpler when it comes to approaching style, while I’m more glitzy.” The partners’ choice of product
lines reflects this. Whether an invitation, favor or a personalized gift, Drazenovic says, “We help customers stay within their budget.” The products are all conveniently displayed online. The boutique has been in business for 13 years; and Tarabokija and Drazenovic took over three years ago. The two regularly attend trade shows to keep up-to-date on industry trends. “We view our business as a dream come to life and welcome the opportunity to make milestones a dream come true for clients,” attests Tarabokija.

INCOMING… By Barry Farber
T
here are great benefits from being aware of the opportunities that lie within difficulties. Anytime we push ourselves into new territories or push our limits both physically and mentally, we will encounter obstacles, no’s, setbacks, and barriers. The real intelligence lies in understanding the incoming data by adjusting, learning and sometimes moving on. Here are a few ways to deal with incoming obstacles effectively: 1. Strong belief system. Do you believe your idea or position has true value? That will go a long way when faced with objections and challenges. I’m approached by companies that want me to place their products and services into national accounts, or inventors that want me to market their inventions or athletes and entertainers that want me to help them breakthrough. If I don’t see a strong value in the offer it becomes very difficult to market. But when the added value is there it gives you the reasons to keep moving forward against the obstacles. Then tenacity and persistence are easier to enforce and have other benefits attached. People see that extra enthusiasm and effort as a positive energy, especially when backed by an attitude that you have faith behind your mission.
2. The counter is where the strategy lives. In martial arts there is a great advantage to not striking first. The greatest fighters can see an attack coming before the movement begins. The ability to step aside or move into the attack allows you to control their energy or use it against them. In business I’ve seen people try to force their ideas or products on to someone first and it can backfire. When people see someone more interested in their own gains than understanding the key needs and goals of the client then more objections surface. By understanding not just your strengths but really tuning into the other persons goals it allows you to reduce the obstacles moving forward. I welcome the objections or adversity. I sometimes let them pass right by or address them head on. In martial arts there is a saying, “what’s hard dies, what is soft lives.” Stay flexible and learn how to blend with your opponent. When change comes your way keep an open mind and look for ways to take advantage of the situation by not being so rigid in your approach. When we get set in our ways that is what seems to get “in the way” of new opportunities.

3. Constant preparation and action builds confidence and clarity. Massive action combined with deep research on your strategy has a powerful effect. When you study your targets, goals or anything tied into your objectives it gives you a calming feeling and internal confidence that helps you stand strong against any incoming obstacles. The next time you take on a challenge that might seem overwhelming try to seek out people who have the experience to be a mentor. Then read everything you can about the situation. We have at our fingertips a world of resources on the internet from audio, video and reading materials. But just as powerful as the research and preparation can be, nothing takes the place of learning from our actions. The work will teach you how to do it. I can’t say it any simpler. My focus over the years with each project has been this... to learn from my actions and act from my learning. One without the other suffers, but together provide a powerful strategy to deal with any of those incoming obstacles. “We can remove all obstacles through quiet perseverance.” — Chinese Proverb
