T
he Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Donald Margulies’ “Time Stands Still” production. The play marks Maplewood resident Tait Ruppert’s Chatham Community Players directorial debut. “Margulies’ brilliant play illustrates the sometimes hidden travails, traumas and joys of moving from one phase of life to another” Ruppert said. Ruppert describes this play as a “quietly powerful drama that tells the story of a couple reaching a crossroads in their lives. How they balance the life they knew with an uncertain future is beautifully, humorously and tenderly told by our talented actors.” The “Time Stands Still” cast includes Sarah Pharaon of South Orange, as Sarah Goodwin; Scott Tyler of Morristown, as James Dodd; Alan Ellis of Florham Park, as Richard Ehrlich; and Emily Miller of Jersey City, as Mandy Bloom. “The cast is an amazingly talented ensemble, all veterans of the best that community theater has to offer,” said coproducer Joe DeVico. The performance will be October 1, 2, 8, 9, 15 and 16 at 8pm; and October 10 at 3pm. Chatham Playhouse, 23 North Passaic Ave, Chatham 973-635-7363.

Local Mom’s Non-Profit Supports Over 100,000 NJ Families a Year
By Jackie Schatell
B
ridget Cutler, of New Providence, was looking for something meaningful to dedicate her life to when she heard a story about a woman that had to give up her baby because she could not afford diapers for her child. This broke Bridget’s heart and started her on the journey toward founding The Moms Helping Moms Foundation (MHM), a baby supply and diaper bank serving lowincome and vulnerable children 0-5 who live in New Jersey. What started as a grassroots effort, with local moms collecting gently used and new items from families that no longer needed them, which were stored in Bridget’s garage, has grown into a nonprofit serving over 100,000 NJ families a year, out of a large warehouse in Warren.

Vicinity Magazine
The Moms Helping Moms Foundation partners with agencies in every county of NJ that help moms, including homeless shelters and domestic violence agencies, as well as with large corporations like Walgreens, Target, Huggies, The Honest Company and more. Walgreens and Target sponsor the group by offering patrons the opportunity to round-up their purchases with the extra money being donated to Moms Helping Moms. Through these relationships, as well as through ones with social workers, and organizations, as well as through the generous volunteerism and donations from other local businesses and people, Moms Helping Moms has donated “hundreds of thousands of diapers, clothing, formula, nursing supplies, strollers and countless other baby essentials to thousands of families.”
October 2021
Moms Helping Moms raises money through its yearly gala, which is scheduled for February 11, 2022, at the Park Ave. Club in Florham Park, grants, diaper drives and more. Bridget says, “Together with our supporters, we are working to end diaper need and fight childhood poverty in New Jersey.” There are many ways to help MHM. Those interested can donate money, items, or time and/or hold supply drives. Donations of diapers, wipes, baby hygiene items, period products, books and clothing for ages 0 to 5T, strollers and pack n plays and formula, can be made at 223 Stirling Road in Warren, on Mondays through Thursdays, from 10am to 3pm. To learn more, please see the MHM website: momshelpingmomsfoundation.org.

Volunteer Approaches 100th Move Through Making Moves Matter By Jackie Schatell
Michele Caruso
M
ichele Caruso of Madison, a four-year volunteer with Family Promise of Morris County, the leading national nonprofit addressing family homelessness, is approaching her 100th move with Making Moves Matter (MMM). She, along with a group of volunteers, comes into play when a client or family is ready to move into their very own home. Once a client has been through the process of working with Family Promise, which provides homelessness prevention, emergency shelter, workforce development, education, financial capability, health, and wellness services, and so much more, Michele’s group begins helping them move in. First, she collects household items from “dishes to bedding, to can openers and cookie sheets and everything in between,” and later she and the volunteers go to the house, clean it, set up the kitchen, stage the donated furniture, make the beds, fill up the pantry and fridge, and help make the “house become a home.” “We ask our clients what foods they like, their favorite colors and more, so as to make sure they have everything they need to move in and feel loved and supported,” says Michele. Michele started Making Moves Matter after working with Family Promise for a year and realizing that it “wasn’t enough just to find clients a place to live – in order for them to have success, they needed all of the necessary tools, including household items.”
“When someone works with us, they have little to no money saved up,” says Michele. “It makes no sense for them to deplete their resources just to furnish their home. They need to be able to live comfortably too. So, we work with our community resources and generous donors and collect home good items that the MMM volunteers use to set up, October 2021
“forever homes” as fully as possible. This gives them the best opportunity to become independent. Michele says her work makes her feel “proud and happy” and that she loves seeing how excited the families are to see their new homes for the first time. She says there are always happy tears! Healthy Teeth with an Ounce of Prevention By Christine S. Maxwell, photo by Dan Epstein

or more than 20 years, Helen Chiu, DMD, PA, has maintained a thriving dental practice for all ages. Dr. Chiu, and her receptionist, dental assistants, and dental hygienists are ready to provide complete and comprehensive dental care. Services include basic dentistry, pediatric dentistry, restorative, and surgical procedures. Adult orthodontia, using Invisalign®, is also available. While Dr. Chiu is well versed in dentistry that corrects teeth problems, she also believes in preventative measures. Cavities are one area of concern for Dr. Chiu. "I am seeing an increase in cavities in both my young patients and elderly patients," she says. "Many cavities preventable if the patient practices simple lifestyle changes.” With her younger patients, dietary changes, particularly in beverages, helps to reduce the number of cavities. Juices, sodas, and even milk contain sugar, and sugar in these drinks causes tooth decay. For fewer cavities, water should be the

beverage of choice. Limiting sugary drinks to no more than two per day would be ideal. For those prone to many cavities, cutting back on sweets is also recommended. Because New Jersey does not have fluoridated water, Dr. Chiu provides fluoride tablets/vitamins to her young patients from 2 years to 9 years. Early fluoride treatment lays the groundwork for healthy permanent teeth. Adults seek treatment due to cavities for several reasons. First, root exposure of teeth that some older patients may have allows decay to penetrate teeth. Secondly, medications, such as high blood pressure medication and antidepressants, may cause "dry mouth." This dryness provides a welcome environment for tooth decay. For all patients, Dr. Chiu reminds us that thorough, preventative dental care prevents numerous problems. "Visit the dentist regularly, brush your teeth two times a day, particularly at night is critical.
Good dental hygiene is your best defense again tooth decay," she says.

racticing law was always on Tanya Freeman’s bucket list, and ten years ago, she was able to check off that goal. With her background in banking and insurance, and having six children herself, she felt that family law was the right fit for her.

When she needs advice on an issue outside of family law, she can call on her fellow partners to assist her client.

MODERN ACUPUNCTURE® TO HOST OPEN HOUSE Photos by Dan Epstein
“Making Lives Better,” is the goal of Modern
Acupuncture in The Florham Park. They invite you to learn more about Acupuncture, the ancient Chinese Medicine that has been helping people for more than 3000 years at their Open Houses being held on October 3rd and 10th from 12noon4pm. Participants will also get a tour of their Zen Lounge, the relaxing spa-like treatment area, enjoy discounted introductory treatments while enjoying complimentary refreshments.
Families that seek treatment at Modern Acupuncture in Florham Park range from children 12 years of age to adults. Some conditions that they seek acupuncture treatment for include: stress, anxiety, depression, fatigue, concentration and focus issues, insomnia, skin health, allergies, sports injuries, back pain, joint pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, muscle aches, headaches/migraines, general wellness, digestive issues, high blood pressure, neuropathy, menstrual cramps, and fertility. If you are like the many, suffering from anxiety and depression, you don’t have to live with the negative feelings, thoughts, or other symptoms. Modern Acupuncture® is a natural stress relief solution, and studied theories show that acupuncture stimulates the body to release naturally produced “feel good” endorphins and stimulate the parasympathetic or “rest and digest” response in our body, alleviating symptoms associated with stress. Finding the right treatment for you may take some time. Early treatment is the best way to manage both of these conditions and find treatments that are effective in the longterm. Modern Acupuncture is a proactive lifestyle that naturally ‘optimizes your well-being.’

Morris Museum Launches First Smithsonian SPARK!LAB N
ew Jersey’s only Smithsonian Affiliate, The Morris Museum, unveiled Spark!Lab, a cutting-edge facility, on September 24. This Smithsonian-created learning space will inspire young visitors to create, collaborate, and innovate, and is one of ten such facilities in the nation. Spark!Lab is made possible by leadership support from Florham Park based BASF, with additional support provided by Gay H. Osborn on behalf of the Blanche and George Jones Fund, Inc. Spark!Lab offers any child (ages 5-12 and accompanied by an adult), a new informal approach to hands-on learning. Instead of following step-by-step instructions, young inventors will be empowered to problemsolve and overcome real-world obstacles. Spark!Lab offers many unique, project-specific stations, where inventors can engage directly with engineering and design challenges. “Spark!Lab is a dynamic, inquiry-based educational space where our children will develop the confidence and 21st-century skills needed to succeed in the classroom and beyond,” stated Dr. Cleveland Johnson, Morris Museum’s President and CEO. “Bringing such amazing Smithsonian resources to our community is part of our growing commitment to STEAM (science, technology, engineering arts and maths) education in New Jersey.” “Innovation is at the heart of everything we do at BASF. For more than a decade our STEM education programs have inspired the future scientists, engineers, and innovators that will be essential to our continued success as the world’s leading chemical company,” said Molly

She scheduled a second mammogram. It confirmed there was a suspicious lesion that required a biopsy. During Thanksgiving weekend in 2019, at age 44, she received a phone call confirming she had early-stage breast cancer. Her initial approach to the diagnosis was very clinical, she said. She researched breast cancer literature and studies, and spoke to colleagues who were experts in the field. Then, she made her decision: a bilateral mastectomy. She fully trusted her surgeon, Dr. Sarah Schaefer of Saint Barnabas Medical Center. Yet, as the day drew near, it hit her that her body was about to be altered permanently. loss— and it was important to process it on a personal level. “How do I drive? What pillows should I get?” she remembers asking herself. A breast cancer survivor colleague recommended physical therapy, which has helped her tremendously. Another contact referred her to BreastCancer.org, an online group that offers support and advice. “These peer communities provide tremendous practical and emotional support,” Dr. Wang said. Before her own diagnosis, “I wouldn’t have realized how helpful this is.” She believes her experiences are especially important to convey to New Jersey’s large Asian American community.

“Asian American women have a very low rate of getting mammograms,” she said. “There is a myth that Asians have low rates of breast cancer.” While true in many parts of Asia, Western diets and lifestyles have altered this, she said. Breast cancer, she emphasized, does not have to be a death sentence. As one colleague put it, “At some point, this will be just a bump in the road.” But early detection is vital. “Women often make our own health our last priority,” she said. If mammogram results find anything, Dr. Wang said—follow your doctor’s advice and get the follow-up exam that may save your life.

Pumpkin Patch Returns to Presbyterian Church Community Invited to Help Fight Hunger in New Jersey
F
or its 15th year, the Presbyterian Church of Chatham Township (PCCT) will raise funds to benefit two local non-profit organizations focused on tackling hunger and need. While the Pumpkin Patch fundraiser was virtual in 2020, this year the church will once again fill its front lawn on Southern Boulevard with colorful pumpkins and gourds. The Pumpkin Patch is open October 1131, 2021 daily: Monday-Friday 2-6pm; Saturday and Sunday 11am-6pm. “This all-volunteer effort is dear to our hearts and central to our mission,” said the The Rev. Dr. Ellen C. Clémot, Senior Pastor of PCCT. “Each year we donate 100% of the proceeds as part of our longstanding commitment to provide food and hope to those who are most vulnerable among us. We invite the community to join us by emptying the patch and filling plates for our neighbors in need.”
All proceeds will go to two local non-profit organizations, and be divided equally between them: nourish.NJ in Morristown (formerly known as The Community Soup Kitchen and Outreach Center) offers food, housing, work readiness, medical, social and educational services 365 days a year, free of charge, no questions asked. In 2020 it distributed 750,000 pounds of food. The Community FoodBank of New Jersey in Hillside, a member of Feeding America®, has been delivering food, help and hope across the state for more than 45 years. Last year it provided nutritious food for over 85 million meals through its network of over 800 community partners. According to the Community FoodBank, in New Jersey 8.7% of residents were food insecure before Covid-19, a figure projected to rise to 13.5% because of COVID-19. For children in the state, the figures are 11.3% and 19.7%.

Prediction About Future Design That Will Surprise You CWI.DESIGN president and principal designer Rachel Kapner has an uncanny knack for making predictions about the future of design. She even has a crystal ball. “It’s sort of a joke around my office,” she says, “so I did get one for my birthday.” So, when she gazes into it, what does Rachel see about the future of design? New Designs Will Deserve Fresh Fabrics This prediction has already come to pass in Rachel’s world, but it’s one you may see more designers embrace. “I don’t like to repeat fabrics,” Rachel explains. “If I use a fabric, I will not use it again, and that is definitely one of my sticking points.” This impulse has occasionally stymied suppliers. “I’ve had sales reps who’ve come in, who have asked me, ‘Show me the fabric you use every day.’ And I say, ‘There isn’t one.’ And they look at me like I’m crazy.” But to Rachel, it’s smart. “Many of my clients know each other. I want each of their projects to reflect uniqueness, so that you could say: ‘Yes, I can see that Rachel did this—but not necessarily see the exact same thing.” What unique fabric would Rachel love to use in an upcoming project? Ideally, she’d channel the influence of design icon Mario Buatta, the Prince of Chintz. “Instead of his true floral bouquet chintz: a different, more abstract version of it—but on the same ground cloth,” she explains. “You don’t see a lot of the same ground cloth that you did 30 years ago. People are starting to ask for it, and it’s just not out there.” While she searches for fabric with his spirit, Rachel will hold tight to her memories of Mario. “I met him about a year or two before he passed away,” Rachel recalls. She’d seen him at talks and books signings, but their most memorable encounter was at a showhouse where Rachel was working. “He was sitting at a table. I went up and just sat and talked to him,” she remembers. “I was so excited that this was my idol, and I was able to meet him.”

Old Decks Can Look New Again Deck resurfacing can be an excellent way to spruce up an existing deck for a reasonable investment. Resurfacing can be a great fall/winter project because it can be finished in a short period of time. Deck resurfacing is the process of replacing the deck boards, railings and/or stairs on existing deck frame and foundation. There are a number of reasons someone might wish to resurface a deck. • The deck isn’t that old but has not been well maintained so the surface boards are weather worn. • The deck surface is fine but the railings or stairs are in disrepair or unsafe. • You purchase an existing home but do not like the finish or materials used for the deck surface. Be sure to have your deck fully inspected by a trusted professional to ensure deck resurfacing in the proper way to go.

Don’t Replace Cabinets… ReFace Them Cabinet refacing is a great option for homeowners who enjoy the layout of their kitchen but want to update the aesthetic without a total remodel. And for those selling their homes, this is a quick way to update a kitchen with a huge expense. Refacing cabinets include removing all doors and drawer fronts and replacing them with new custom doors and drawers with a style and finish chosen by the homeowner. A specialized installer should reface them with a pressure sensitive wood veneer, and install new soft close hinges, moldings and cabinet hardware. When deciding to reface, the design process varies per project. When refacing ‘as is’ the process is simply choosing AFTER the door style, finish and hardware. If the refacing is more involved is can also include modifications, additional cabinetry or adding accessories.

Preparation is Key to Perfection To prepare your walls for painting: • Plaster walls—open cracks to a “V” shape and apply plaster. Mesh-tape the area and follow with three coats of joint compound. • Sheetrock—use mesh tape to cover cracks, apply several coats of joint compound, and sand until smooth. • Trim/windows/doors—fill all openings with caulk to ensure there are no gaps or holes. Follow these guidelines for a beautiful, smooth finish every time.

Prolong the Life of Patio Furniture A furniture cover is designed to protect outdoor furniture from damage caused by rain, snow, hail, and even sunshine. Outdoor furniture comes in a wide range of materials, and some materials can be more easily damaged than others. Covering your patio furniture is extremely important for prolonging its life. Look for covers that are breathable and waterproof, as they will provide the most protection. The best furniture covers not only protect from humidity, rain and snow, they also protect your furniture from damaging debris from high winds, as well as block out the sun’s UV rays, which are known to fade some types of materials. Before covering your furniture for the season, it is a good idea to clean it first. In doing so, any dirt, residue, and water that could otherwise stain the furniture while it is covered will be removed.

A knife’s purpose is to cut ingredients so that you can incorporate the right shapes and sizes for your dishes, but a dull knife edge can lead to trouble. When executing different cuts, a well-maintained blade will behave more predictably, and there is less chance to lose control and injure yourself. Sharp knives also cut with less need to apply pressure. A dull knife can make every cut a drawn-out struggle, a sharp knife can cut through ingredients quickly and efficiently. Sharp knives also keep ingredients fresh looking. When using sharp knives they will do less damage to your ingredients than dull ones. This is because while they do cut more efficiently, that cut is more precise and thus damages fewer of the ingredients’ cells. Because a dull knife tears and crushes organic cells, it often forces out the ingredients’ natural juices and moisture. Less brute force with a sharp knife means less damage to the food.

Messy Closet? No Problem! Is your closet a mess? You’re not alone. These tips can help: • Toss items you haven’t used in two years. • Maximize hanging space by installing double rods— one upper, one lower. • Add a 12-inch shelf above the rods to create an additional storage spot. • Use flat shoe shelves; they can accommodate more shoes than cubbies.

Assorted bratwursts, including Bauernwurst, Bavarian (Nürnberger), Smoked Cheddar with and without Jalapeno, Veal Weisswurst, Smoked and Beer varieties are ready for your dinner table. And don’t forget to pick up some traditional sides such as Spaetzle with Gravy, Potato Pancakes with Applesauce, and Braised Red Cabbage, to round out your celebration. make their own.” Most of the sausages are pork based, while others include both pork and veal, and some just veal. The bratwurst are available year round, not just during Oktoberfest. A family owned business, Barth’s has been providing high quality products for four generations. Jimmy, as his long-time customers affectionately call him, really knows his meat and the people who work at Barth’s are skilled butchers. Some are European artisans who have been doing this their whole lives. Others have been trained in-house. Notably, Jim’s son, Max has grown up in the store and is following in his father’s footsteps to provide the best products and service. “People may say they know their meat and its quality, but I don’t think there are many others putting such a meticulous eye to it,” says Miriam Zahn. And, she should know. In addition to working at Barth’s for the last four years, she has also been a customer for 15 years.

Diamond Minds
The 5 Secrets
IN SEARCH OF THE MAGIC TREE…
O
ne of my first books that came out in 1995 was called Diamond in the Rough. It was based on the top traits of high achievers ranging from business leaders, top entertainers, sports legends, to inventors and brain surgeons. I created an audiobook, radio and tv show around the title and was relentless in bringing the book to the biggest direct sales teams in the country ranging from Mary Kay to Amway. Many of them had the goal of each rep becoming a diamond. So that was why I titled the book… Diamond in the Rough. The book became an international best-seller in multiple
languages and has been the inspiration for the foundation of my children’s book, The Adventures of Little Billy… IN SEARCH OF THE MAGIC TREE. Each of the animals in the story have Barry Farber been given the essential traits of the key chapters in Diamond in the Rough. Here are a few of the traits that have become the 5 Secrets in The Adventures of Little Billy that can be applied in our everyday lives:
Lawrence the Owl
Bosco the Bear
“Help all the animals that you see, and you shall find The Magic Tree.”
“Give a smile to all you see, and you shall find The Magic Tree.”
I think the Owl and Zig Ziglar both agree that our rewards in life are in direct proportion to our service. “You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help enough other people get what they want.”
It’s not just my opinion that attitude is essential for success. A study conducted by Harvard Business School determined that four factors are critical for success in business; information, intelligence, skill, and attitude. When these factors were ranked in importance, this particular study found that information, intelligence, and skill combined amounted to 7% of business success, and attitude amounted to 93%! What is true for business is also true for our lives—Attitude is overwhelmingly one of the most important factors to success.
(Lawrence’s Secret: Service)
(Bosco’s Secret: Attitude)
Sheba the Wolf (Sheba’s Secret: Courage)
“Be as brave as you can be, and you shall find The Magic Tree.” There are many definitions of courage. They have to do with mental and moral strength to resist danger or hardship—firmness of mind and will in the face of extreme difficulty—and the capacity to meet adversity with fortitude and resilience. My favorite definition of courage is “readiness to deal with things fearlessly by reason of stouthearted temperament or a resolute spirit.”
Sherman the Turtle
(Sherman’s Secret: Determination) “Never give up on a dream that could be, and you shall find The Magic Tree.” “The miracle, or the power, that elevates the few is to be found in their industry, application, and perseverance under the promptings of a brave, determined spirit.” -Mark Twain
Ruppert the Toad
The Adventures of
(Ruppert’s Secret: Empathy) “Look on the inside of those you see, and you shall find The Magic Tree.” “The nature of humanity, it’s essence, is to feel another’s pain as one’s own, and to act to take that pain away. There is nobility in compassion, a beauty in empathy, a grace in forgiveness.” -John Connolly
The Secrets that Little Billy discovers on his adventure seem like common sense to many of us, but then again common sense isn’t so common. We all just need a little reminder of what’s important and the Magic will be there.
