Montclair Public Library Receives Great Stories Club Grant
T
he Montclair Public Library was recently selected as one of 70 libraries throughout the US to partake in the Great Stories Club, a reading and discussion program for underserved teens. This competitive grant is offered by the American Library Association (ALA) with support from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. As part of the Great Stories Club series on Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation, staff from the Library will work with teens to read and discuss stories that explore questions of race, equity, identity, history, institutional change, and social justice. The books, curated for the theme “Finding Your Voice: Speaking Truth to Power,” include The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo; I Am Alfonso Jones by Tony Medina; Piecing Me Together by Renée Watson; and American Street by Ibi Zoboi. The Library will receive a $1,200 programming grant and copies of each of the selected books, which will be gifted to the book club participants. Gatherings of the Great Stories Club at the Montclair Public Library are set to begin in July.

Livingston Students Participate in Entrepreneurship Program
L
ivingston students are learning all about entrepreneurship thanks to a unique educational program. At Collins Elementary School, students have the opportunity to participate in TREP$, an after-school entrepreneurship education program. Through the program, the elementary school students are learning about how to create their own business. The program will culminate in a marketplace event, where students sell the products they have created. At their most recent meeting, the group practiced their entrepreneurial skills by creating their own design for a candy wrapper. TREP$, short for enTREPreneur$, teaches kids in grades four to eight how to start their own businesses. In weekly workshops, they learn various lessons and apply them at home as they build their business with the help of their families. The whole school community comes out to enjoy the TREP$ Marketplace, where the young entrepreneurs launch their businesses together. The program can be offered as part of the curriculum or as after-school enrichment.

“In this service project, through partnership with the GrassROOTS Community Foundation and using the #GreenRibbonWeek for social media, students become actively involved in the conversation regarding mental health, suicide and assistance. Throughout the week, students learn to normalize the conversation about mental health, and an overwhelming amount of statistics that support the notion that many kids feel the same. Students also become aware of the school’s Student Assistant Counselors. During lunch, students circulate the cafeterias with helpful hints and information to improve overall mental health. This project creatives an environment that supports youth mental health and allows young people to adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles while making conversations about mental health as common as conversations about physical health.”

Ready, Set… CAMP! Is Your Child Old Enough?
Children under seven may not adjust easily to being away from home. Consider day camp to prepare them for future overnight camp. Consider your child’s experiences away from home, perhaps spending the night visiting relatives or friends. Were the separations easy or difficult? Use that to guide you in this decision.
Local or Sleepaway?
Y
ou’re considering a summer camp, but how do you choose? Here’s some advice from the American Camp Association to help parents sort through the possibilities. Children are ready for new experiences at different stages. Ask yourself the following questions to help gauge whether this is the summer your child will start camp.
If it’s time for camp, your next choice is between a local camp or one that’s further away. Nearby camps make visiting easy, and friends and family may be familiar with the camp. Also, your child is likely to find classmates at the same camp. A camp that’s further away, however, offers a greater variety of experiences and promotes independence, especially for teenagers. These camps are more likely to have a diversity of campers, and even different languages spoken. You’ll also have more camps to choose from.
Session Length
Short sessions (1-3 weeks) are great for first-time or younger campers, giving them a chance to learn new skills, bond with other campers and staff, and get camp experience without much homesickness. Longer sessions (4-12 weeks) offer the chance to develop specialized skills, and gain a strong sense of belonging to the community. Lifelong friendships often develop at these long summer sleepaway camps.
All-Boys, All-Girls, or Co-Ed?
Each has benefits. Single sex camps can break gender stereotypes—girls interact with women in positions of authority and boys interact with men who act as nurturers. There may be more opportunities to “be yourself” without impressing the opposite sex. And often, brother and sister camps share some activities. Co-ed camps also mirror and prepare campers for everyday living in a co-ed world. They allow families with a

Specialized camps can offer an extraordinary experience to concentrate on one or two activities, while providing traditional activities as well. In these camps, parents can expect an increased proficiency during the camping session. Campers also deepen their knowledge and skill in a particular area of interest or ability. understand campers’ strengths and challenges. And the atmosphere is supportive and fun. No matter which type of camp you choose or how long your child attends, the experience will open up a world of discovery and learning. Camps, according to the American Camp Association (ACA), value children for who they are and who they may become. “Camp gives each child a world of good,” its experts state.

e wanted a walk-in closet for our master bedroom and met with a dozen closet companies, but all looked at the structural challenges and just shook their heads. Then we met Steven. He understood exactly what we were trying to achieve. He took many measurements, asked many questions, made some excellent suggestions and returned shortly thereafter with a drawing that depicted exactly what we wanted. He and his team arrived on the scheduled date and, a day and a half later with very little mess, delivered the perfect closet. It was exactly what we had discussed, it was beautiful, all the structural issues were disguised, and the quality of the workmanship was impeccable. —T. SAD? Lighten Up
W
hen the clocks fall back and the days start to shorten, our hours in the sunlight become scarce. This can cause a lot of people to feel less energetic, moody and unhappy. For some, the seasonal change actually leads to a type of depression called seasonal affective disorder (also called SAD). One way to alleviate some of these symptoms is light therapy. Although light therapy is not a cure, it may increase your energy levels, regulate sleep and boost your mood. During light therapy, you sit near a light box for an extended period of time—most people choose to do it in the morning. In order for it to be effective, you should be relatively close to the light, and facing it with your eyes open. Aside from that, you’re free to do your makeup, read a book, surf the web or do whatever you’d like. The amount of time you should spend in front of the light varies depending on the amount of LUX the lamp produces, but is typically between 30 minutes and two hours. Light therapy is generally safe, but it’s always good to discuss with your doctor before you try a new treatment, especially if you have a history of skin cancer, or have a condition or are taking a medication that makes your skin more sensitive to light or your eyes vulnerable to light damage.

f you think that getting the proper amount of daily “zzzs” only prevents you from feeling tired, think again. In recent years, studies have confirmed the important role sleep plays in one’s overall health. Findings have shown that chronic sleep deprivation actually can cause a variety of health problems. Investigators at the University of Chicago, for example, have demonstrated how sleep curtailment can adversely affect hormone levels associated with appetite and hunger and lead to weight gain and even obesity. Other researchers have uncovered links between lack of sleep and the onset of cardiovascular disorders and increased risk for diabetes. Sleep debt also has been tied to decreased attention and memory and the body’s ability to fight infection. While American adults slept an average of nine hours at the turn of the century, today they sleep less than seven. In fact, according to a poll by the National Sleep Foundation, nearly one-third of Americans get six hours or less each night. Experts say that sleeping eight hours is optimal.

Restorative Yoga, Chakra cleansings, etc. are available 7 days a week.
With the new year upon us, it’s important that you get enough rest to stay healthy. Here we take a closer look at sleep deprivation and how to avoid it.
SLEEP AND WEIGHT
During sleep, the body secretes all kinds of hormones, two of which are connected to hunger: leptin, which helps monitor energy stored in cells and in turn controls appetite and metabolism, and ghrelin, which triggers hunger. Studies have indicated that an insufficient amount of sleep causes leptin levels to decline and ghrelin levels to rise. The result is not only a greater urge to eat, but also to indulge in calorie-dense, high-carb foods. Over time, this cycle can lead to weight gain, and in some cases, contribute to obesity.

Research has shown that chronic sleep deprivation can alter the body’s ability to secrete insulin and process glucose, potentially to the levels associated with type-2 diabetes. In one investigation, participants had their blood sugar tested when their sleep deficiency was greatest and were found to take significantly longer than normal (by as much as 40 percent) to regulate it after a high-carb meal. Also discovered were higher blood levels of the hormone cortisol, which is suspected of causing insulin resistance in older adults.
SLEEP AND HEART HEALTH
When we sleep, heart rate and blood pressure typically lower to allow the cardiovascular system to rest. Lack of sleep compromises these functions, leading to high blood pressure—a major risk factor for heart disease—and other cardiac problems. Findings from studies conducted at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston revealed an 82 percent higher risk of heart attack among subjects who slept five or less hours nightly, and a 30 percent higher risk for those who slept only six.
ARE YOU SLEEP DEPRIVED?
Be aware of these signs and symptoms, which may indicate that you need sleep: • Dozing off while watching television, reading or sitting in meetings • Making frequent mistakes • Memory problems • Attention deficits • Slower reaction time • Negativity, depression and impatience • Difficulty focusing
HOW TO SLEEP WELL
Your sleeping environment is key to good slumber, so make sure your bed and bedding are comfortable and that your bedroom is quiet, cool and dark. Keep to a set routine and hour for bedtime. Also, stay away from alcoholic, sugary and caffeinated drinks and avoid exercising within a few hours of going to bed. Should you awaken in the middle of the night and are unable to fall back asleep, think relaxing thoughts and do not watch the clock. If after 30 minutes you are still up, get out of bed and try doing soothing activities, like reading or listening to music. Relaxation Tips to Relieve Stress Relax anytime and anyplace, no reservations required. 1. Breathe deeply from your belly, which shoots oxygen
through your bloodstream, relaxing you immediately. Slowing inhale through your nose, feeling the start in your abdomen and work up to the top of your head.
2. Smile! Even a fake grin sends nerve impulses to a key
emotional center in your brain, shifting you into calmness.
3. Massage the center of your palm in circles with the
opposable thumb. It works on reflex points, acting like a whole body mini-massage.
4. Getting angry? Take a quick walk, get up and stretch,
or put the annoying caller on hold and count to 10 while breathing deeply.

Keeping Your Health on Track During the Winter 3. Keep Things Organically Sweet. Staying on track doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the sweetness of the season. Instantly boost the flavor of your favorite meals with organic honey. One great option is Organic Honey In The Raw. USDA Organic Certified and Non-GMO Project Verified, it’s made from pure nectar collected from exotic wildflowers found in the remote Caatinga region of northeast Brazil. The hand-harvested, sustainable honey is raw (never heated above 117 degrees) and unfiltered, so it retains the benefits of bee pollen.
W
And just one tablespoon of organic raw honey provides the right amount of sweetness and flavor for any dish or drink, including year-round staples like oatmeal, yogurt, tea, and more. You can also consider giving a honey makeover to all your favorite holiday recipes, including glazes and sauces for meat and poultry, cocktail recipes, and of course baked treats. inter can be a sluggish season full of rich foods and little activity. Here are some sensible ways to keep your health on track during the long winter months.
4. Make Substitutions.
1. Stick to Routines. To the best of your ability during this hectic time of year, attempt to stick to routines that promote wellness. Set a bedtime and honor it. Hit the gym. Meditate. Do whatever it is that keeps you grounded and feeling your best.
“ With a mindful approach, you can keep your health on track all season long.”
Other healthful substitutions you can make this winter and beyond include topping pies with Greek yogurt instead of cream, using apple sauce in place of oil and nut flour instead of white flour in baking, and serving vegetable mash as an alternative to mashed potatoes.
5. Be Mindful. 2. Drink Up. Many people associate dehydration with the warmer months. But in winter weather, it can be especially easy to forget to stay well-hydrated. Remember, water doesn’t need to be the only source of hydration you think about this season. Soups and purees made from hearty winter vegetables, as well as citrus fruits do the trick, too, and their nutritional properties can help keep you healthy in winter.
Wedding or parties on your winter calendar? When you enter a party with a buffet set-up, it can be tempting to reach for the richest foods first. Before indulging in the canapes and Swedish meatballs, try filling up a plate with crudité first. While you’re doing so, get a good look at all the options available. This way, you’ll be more likely to savor choice items you’ll truly enjoy. Winter doesn’t have to result in packing on pounds or feeling under the weather. With a mindful approach, you can keep your health on track all season long. — StatePoint

The Woodhouse Day Spa
Diamond Minds
VISION By Barry Farber
O
ne of my hobbies has been sculpting rock, wood and painting using mixed media, water color and acrylic. Every time I’ve engaged in the work (especially sculpting) I found myself going into a meditative state and coming out with new ideas that have worked for my business that had nothing to do with the artwork itself. What was happening? At times my mind felt so clear that images and inspiration started pouring in on so many fronts. So I decided to start a sculpture that would tie into a children’s book I had written many years ago. My goal is this… to carve out an owl in a tree which happens to be one of the main characters in the book. As I go through the process I would create in my mind all the activities that would bring this project to full color animation and licensing. Before I started I searched all types of owls and engrained in my mind’s eye exactly what the finished piece would look like. So I went to work. Here are some key insights I’ve learned about using vision as a tool for any activity or project you would take on:
3% completed
20%
• Have a clear picture in your mind’s eye of the environment closest to your final vision. Study everything you can that will add value to your vision. Surround yourself with the people and industries that will contribute to your final vision. We become what we think about and surround ourselves with, all the time. • Clear away the dead wood...simplify. Your vision is in your mind’s eye so whittle away at whatever is not part of the final picture. Chiseling off the wood that’s in the way of the image is like removing unnecessary activities, projects, or obstacles. Wisdom is built by taking away just as much as it is by adding.
“True wisdom consists not in seeing what is immediately before our eyes, but in foreseeing what is to come.” —Terence, Roman dramatist

• Big picture connections. I like a physical whiteboard in front of me outlining all my projects and activities in full view. I keep it in my office. Sometimes I call it a “MindMap”, “Spiderweb” or you may have heard it called a vision board or dream-board. Put all your life work in front of you so you can make the connections and see the synergy between your activities. I remember interviewing Niall Mackenzie, a Grand Prix motorcycle champion who said he walks the track before every race and visualizes where he’s going to make his pass and creates the movie of every detail in his mind of the win. Everything we do, everything we are, and everything we become is created from our incredible minds. Keeping a mental picture in your mind of your goals is one of the most powerful traits of high achievers.
