New Film Tells the Story of Montclair Holocaust Survivor

A

powerful new film An Inconvenient Time: The Story of Ruth Ravina will premiere this month in Livingston. Created, produced, and scored by Denny Klein of Rand, Feuer and Klein, the film tells the story of Montclair resident and Holocaust survivor Ruth Ravina. At two years old in 1939, Ruth’s odyssey began when the Nazis invaded her hometown of Kozienice, Poland. By the time the Russians liberated Poland, Ruth was 8 years old and had experienced countless tragedies and three concentration camps. Hers is a story of survival and triumph. In 2015, the Klein family met Ruth when their twin daughters Evie and Rebecca signed on to the Twin with a Survivor program through the Holocaust Council at Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ for their mitzvah project. The Klein family created this film to ensure that her powerful story could be told for generations to come.

The premiere will take place on Sunday, February 2 at 11am at Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy in Livingston. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Registration is strongly recommended. Register online at www.jfedgmw.org/inconvenient-time. If you have any questions, contact Jamie Carus at jcarus@jfedgmw.org or 973-929-3067.

Superb Sensory Hallways Installed in Caldwell-West Caldwell Elementary Schools

A

grant has been provided by the Caldwell-West Caldwell Education Foundation, to install sensory hallways in all of the Caldwell-West Caldwell elementary schools. The sensory hallways encourage students to jump, hop, and crawl down the hallways. The movement breaks can appropriately stimulate a tired, unfocused student, or calm an overly active student— not to mention they are fun for kids! These hallways include activities specifically designed to provide stimuli connected with the position, movement, and balance of the body to help students with self-regulation skills, so they are better able to learn. Research has found that deficits in sensory processing can lead to inattentive and fidgeting behavior which affect students’ performance and success in the classroom. Photo: Caldwell-West Caldwell School District Katherine Martinez, CWC Occupational Therapist, has seen students using the Superb Sensory Hallways to organize their body’s energy level. She recently worked with a student who struggled the first time he “crab walked” earlier this month and now was able to sustain the position the entire length of the hallway.

They gain freedom to move in new directions by managing their daily activity choices in a safe, comfortable and happy environment. Summer camp introduces children to new life-long friends. Camp is a place children can be who they are, a place away from the pressures of school and trying to fit in because most camp activities are group activities where no one is excluded— singing, playing, taking and laughing.

id you know that people who have close relationships at home, work, or in their community tend to be healthier and live longer? One reason, according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), is that we’re more successful at meeting our health goals when we join forces with others. NHLBI launched the #OurHearts movement to inspire us to protect and strengthen our hearts with the support of others.

Why Connecting is Good for Your Heart Feeling connected with others and having positive, close relationships benefit our overall health, including our blood pressure and weight. Having people in our lives who motivate and care for us helps, as do feelings of closeness and companionship.

A Roadmap to Good Health Habits By Christine S. Maxwell, photos by Dan Epstein

T

he mind is where a healthy and fit body begins,” states Thelis Negron, a master’s level marriage and family therapist with certifications in personal training, life coaching, and nutrition. As the owner of MBX in Upper Montclair, Thelis has developed a highly effective, twelve-week roadmap, paving the path to long-term, successful diet and fitness results for each client. She incorporates all aspects of her extensive training, from nutrition to life coaching to strength training, in order to prepare the clients for a lifetime of good health habits.

Thelis Negron

First, she assesses each client’s health and eating patterns and coaches him/her in awareness of healthy eating and fitness. Clients discover and correct any beliefs and habits that may sabotage their goals. Next, participants learn proper nutrition habits with a six-week customized diet, consisting of whole foods that include the necessary nutrients for an energy-efficient and well-fueled body.

Treat Your Eyes to a

Lush Set of Lashes By Susan Baldani, photo by Dan Epstein

I

n 2013, best friends Carmela Martinez and Anna Abraham were looking to start a business together. With Carmela’s background in business and Anna’s as a medical aesthetician, they were leaning towards a spa. When they had a chance to experience eyelash extensions for themselves, they knew they had found their future, and opened Lure Lash in Montclair. Seven years later they are the owners of five additional locations. “We transform your eyes once lash at a time,” says Carmela. At Lure Lash, individual eyelash extensions are applied strand by strand, she explains. They are made from synthetic material that is super soft and lightweight, so it mimics your own lashes. Since the lashes are applied to clients’ own lashes, which naturally shed over time, the extensions usually last from four to six weeks. To maintain the look, clients usually come back every two to three weeks for a “lash fill.” “We’re very big proponents of customization. If a client is leaning toward a more natural look or if they want a very glamorous look, we can do that,” Carmela notes.

Achieving Health NATURALLY

Besides lash extensions, Lure Lash offers other services such as waxing and collagen lip masks. At the Montclair location, permanent makeup application is available as well. Everyone on staff is either an aesthetician or cosmetologist, and all are trained by Anna. “We created our own program on how to apply lash extensions, how to decide which is best for our clients, and how to maintain the health of the eyelashes. That’s our number one priority.”

Your Neighborhood Bar and Grill

N

estled in the Wilshire Grand Hotel in West Orange, Grill 350 is a very stylish yet comfortable bar and grill, with food that is worth the trip. The space has been completely re-designed into what owner, Travis Weiss calls a Rustic Industrial look. Both the main dining room and fully stocked bar feature walls of reclaimed wood that complement the tufted retro furniture and exposed vintage I-beams. Antique light fixtures and exposed ductwork inspire images of SoHo. The bar itself is a study in elegance that appears to have been seemingly transported from the poshest of hotel dining rooms, and contrasts with the industrial chic of the seating areas. Grill 350 is the kind of place where you can relax with a craft beer and burger, or have something more ambitious such as the Grilled Skirt Steak–served with roasted garlic mashed potatoes, grilled asparagus, and a Chimichurri sauce–which is a feast for the eyes as well as the palate. If in the mood for traditional, delicious comfort food with a stylish twist, a must-try is the Grilled Eggplant Rolatini, served on a bed of pasta with vodka sauce, fresh basil, and parmesan cheese. Another delicious dish is the Chicken Mole—a semi-boneless chicken breast served over a bed of Peruvian fried rice, with crispy sweet potatoes and appointed with both a Mole Chocolate sauce and a Creme white sauce which dance together on the plate and on your tongue. Folks who prefer fish will love the fresh Bronzino which is served filleted over creamy green chile rice, with a yellow pepper sauce and garnished with pineapple salsa.

Travis Weiss, Owner (left), Bo Kuchtyn, Assistant Manager

Save some room so you can finish your meal with Upside Down Cheesecake, served with berries, whipped cream, and a vanilla sauce. Or for the chocolate lovers, there is the Molten Chocolate Lava Cake, served with a Dolce De Leche sauce, coffee ice cream, whipped cream and fresh berries. Gina Palazzolo, General Manager, strives for Grill 350 to be a “respite from the craziness of life,” and has succeeded. Travis and the Weiss family have had a long history on this property—grandfather Mickey Weiss, who started work as a baker the day after he landed at Ellis Island, began baking on this premise in 1952 when it was known as The Goldman Hotel, and went on to become cook, then head chef, and eventually the general manager. In 2006 Travis’s dad, David, bought the property and Travis took over the on-site catering operation. Grill350 is a restaurant and bar that is fun to be in, where you will find some creative takes on old favorites and discover dishes that are bound to become new favorites. They also have live music every Friday and Saturday as well as monthly events. Definitely put it on your list of places to try!

approach.

It’s all about choices. We can let all the past experiences and people who have “hurt” us make us bitter or better. If we choose to let anger and resentment seethe, they can become like poisons destroying us—and even end up killing us with unnecessary stress. A USA Today

Tip #2: Get all wrapped up in yourself. It’s not time to think of people’s needs; after all, you should always come first. Tip #3: Find an illness in a medical book (and we do have a name for anything you can think up) that defines why people

should feel sorry for Barry Farber you. Tell everyone your “diagnosis” to rationalize your misery. This should work well for a while, and when it gets stale, you can search for something else to evoke sympathy. Tip #4: Blame everyone else for your problems. Never look inside for a solution. Your troubles are always because someone else got lucky and you ended up suffering because of it. Tip #5: And finally, hold these words close to your heart at all times: anger, jealousy, self-pity, selfishness, self-absorption and revenge. You get the point. Attitude determines your altitude in most situations—some look up and some look down. We have the final choice. If it’s going to be, it’s up to me. The writer Maya Angelou phrased it beautifully: “If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude. Don’t complain.” Or, as the Eagles put it, “Get over it.”
