FIBROMYALGIA?

WE OFFER SOLUTIONS, WE OFFER HOPE! Do you suffer from chronic pain? Are you plagued by severe fatigue? Are you afflicted with recurring headaches or migraines? Are you tortured with feelings of tenderness and swelling? Do you experience numbness or tingling in your arms or legs? These are the symptoms we hear from people living with Fibromyalgia. Its symptoms make everyday life challenging, and mundane and daily tasks nearly impossible. Plus, more often than not, these symptoms are only worsened because many doctors find it challenging to understand and even more difficult to treat. If you are experiencing widespread pain in muscles and tissues you may be experiencing signs of Fibromyalgia.

Dr. Aleksandra MIhajlovic, DTCM, L.Ac. is a renowned authority figure in acupuncture, especially in chronic and seemingly complicated cases. With over 10 years of clinical experience, she brings a missing link of healthcare to the Montclair area!

Northern New Jersey residents no longer have to suffer! Finally, a local therapist has a proven solution for Fibromyalgia pain!

Over-the-counter medications often mask the symptoms of Fibromyalgia. Prescription pills, unfortunately, only provide temporary relief and, more often than not, fail to work at all. Possibly the worst-case scenario: you’re also entirely disrespected or dismissed by medical professionals who don’t get Fibromyalgia or don’t care to understand.

Dr. Aleksandra uses nonpharmaceutical, non-invasive, integrative therapies to relieve her patients of Fibromyalgia pain, one of which is acupuncture. Acupuncture is a form of Chinese medicine and uses fine needles to stimulate specific areas of the body. People use acupuncture to reduce various forms of pain, and it works by reducing inflammation, stimulating the release of endorphins, and offering effective relief from the symptoms of Fibromyalgia. In addition to acupuncture, she also utilizes other non-invasive therapies such as ATP Resonance BioTherapy’”’, Clinical Herbal Medicine and non-pharmaceutical, non-opioid, non-steroid, natural therapies for amplified and lasting results.

Our emphasis is difficult to treat chronic conditions: Chronic Pain • Fibromyalgia • Neuropathy • Arthritis • Sciatica

Mom’s Diaper Drive Donates Over 26,000 Diapers to the Needy

W

hen Sara Franks of Livingston had her son Artie in February 2021, and started buying diapers and formula, she began thinking about “the reality of expenses going into caring for a newborn and the mothers struggling to buy these items for their children.” It led her to wonder how to give back. She found that the Apostles’ House in Newark had an extreme need for diapers, so she started a diaper drive and collected over 26,000 diapers, as well as wipes, gently used clothing, and more. She also connected with Hello Bello, which donated 140 of packs of diapers. Sara says, “I thought this would be an easy campaign for people to rally around.” She is grateful to all who donated so generously and plans to run another drive. “I hope my efforts inspire others to do something similar,” she said. Donations are still coming in and people can donate directly to Apostles’ House.

Cousins Raise Money for Local Animal Shelter

F

irst cousins Nora Sears, 7, and Ruby, 4, of Little Falls, and Chloe Zeig, 5, of North Caldwell, ran a hot cocoa stand on New Year’s Day, which raised $204 to be donated to the ASPCA. The girls said they share a love for animals, which is how they chose the animal shelter for their donation. There was no set price for the cocoa, rather, patrons were invited to donate whatever they wanted. Mom Jenny Sears said, “We were really surprised at how many people stopped by to give so generously. It made the whole spirit of the day even better. We may just make this a yearly tradition.” Mom Emily Fellner Zeig said they are “proud of their children for coming up with the idea of wanting to give back.” Monies are still welcome and coming in via Venmo @brahsears.

4th Grade Best Friends Create Charitable Business

E

ight 4th graders who have been friends since preschool have started a charitable business called JamminBraceletz where they sell personalized handmade bracelets and donate a portion of the profits to a different charity each month. Their parents say they thought starting this business “would be a great social exercise to give the girls something proactive to do off their electronics during the pandemic.” This winter, in their first month in business, the girls sold 140 bracelets, which go for $6 to $7 each, for a total of $1200. People can also donate more than this to the causes. The young entrepreneurs donated $500 to the Ronald McDonald house in December, and plan to donate to the Livingston-based pediatric cancer charity Trial Blazers in January, and to the American Heart Association in February. The bracelets can be purchased at Etsy/shop/JamminBraceletz, on Instagram @JamminBraceletz, and via Venmo at Lauren-Merel.

12th Grader Publishes Book on Alternative History

K

rishna Bhatt, a senior at Livingston High School, has published the first book in his series: “What If: Alternative Histories.” The book fosters a change in perspective from traditional history— spinning fascinating counterfactuals. Bhatt says he wants to shake things up for children in elementary through middle school to make history more of an exploration and search for interesting questions. He says, “I want to make sure the next generation understands that history is more than just memorizing names and dates. History is about human decisions, greed, power, diplomacy, religious quests, ethical struggles, victories and almost victories.” The first book contains three stories where readers will “experience what happens when history becomes distorted and timelines change.” Krishna says he loves the experience of presenting history education in unique ways and is already working on his second book. “What If: Alternative Histories” is available for purchase on Amazon. 12

Verona Resident Walks 60 Miles for Breast Cancer

R

ecently, Samantha Klabenesh-Dixon, of Verona, raised $2300 and walked 60 miles for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk in San Diego. She has been participating in this event since 2007, where she first did so to honor a co-worker’s wife. This year, she walked in honor of a friend with breast cancer. To train, she says she walked all over Verona and to West Orange and West Caldwell. She also joined online fitness challenges and has received about 15 medals for walking over 100 miles each month. She says she enjoys the camaraderie of the Komen 3-Day walk and that for three days a year, “the world is as it should be with everyone being kind and caring for one another.” Samantha is proud of what she has accomplished and is already looking forward to next year’s walk, which she hopes her husband Christopher will join her on.

Livingston Resident to Adapt His Children’s Book into an Animated TV Series

L

ivingston resident Barry Farber has announced that he will be converting his children’s book, “The Adventures of Little Billy, In Search of the Magic Tree,” into an animated television series. The characters give advice to Billy, the main character in the book, symbolizing core life values including service, attitude, courage, empathy, and determination. The upcoming television series will be voiced by football player Ottis Jerome Anderson, comedian Bobby Collins, actresses Terra Mackintosh and Eden Kontecz, The Amazing Kreskin, and Farber’s middle child, Jordan. Barry says, “It is important to read to children when they are young” and that he “created the characters to be entertaining, with values children can relate to and learn from.” The show will air in early 2022 on cable stations across the US. Rosemarie’s Rescue Ranch Offers Unique Foster to Adopt Model By Jackie Schatell

W

hen Susan Janett, co-founder of Rosemarie’s Rescue Ranch (RRR), which is operated out of Verona, started her endeavor, she never imagined how large it would grow. What started out in 2017 with her partner Rosemarie Cafiero, who rescued over 7,000 dogs in her lifetime before succumbing to cancer, has grown to a dog fostering organization with 50+ volunteers that pulls dogs from kill shelters and places them in foster situations from within the US and beyond.

Susan Janett

“Rosemarie’s rescue offers a breakthrough in the adoption process,” says Susan. The dogs are first fostered for two weeks with loving pre-approved families that will have first dibs on adoption. “This gives families a period of time to adjust to a new dog in the household and see if it is a good fit, rather than just meeting a dog for a quick 15-minute meet and greet and then taking it home. It’s like a trial, a chance for the family and the dog to decompress together. No pressure. No long-term commitment, to get a feel for one another at home and see if the chemistry is there.” In addition, each foster family is paired with a personal liaison from the organization, who can be contacted for all questions and concerns. “We have about a 98% success rate with our program,” says Susan, who explains that most fosters “fail,” which translates to adopting their dog. “It’s the ultimate goal of the program,” she adds. If the family chooses not to move forward, Susan will enlist their help in reviewing approved applications and playing an active role in selecting a good forever family together. And if moving that dog to another foster is requested, she says she will always take a dog back at any time because she will “always do what is right for the dogs she saves.” Susan says she has applications coming in daily and the turnaround can be as short as 24-48 hours to find the dog a new loving foster placement. “Being flexible is part of our success formula,” she says. Susan personally looks over all prospective foster family applications, with input from her team and committees, and all dogs are first tested for temperament, personality, and how well they get along with other pets, kids, and adults prior to being “pulled.” In addition, all dogs see the vet, get all the necessary shots, and treatments needed. “All of our rescues are family-friendly,” she says. And we send them to their foster homes with all the supplies necessary to make the transition easy including crates, blankets, bowls, toys, and food. She operates a small brick and mortar in Verona, which sells new and gently used items for people to buy. The monies raised help support the organization. 14

February 2022

Since 2017, Susan has saved over 800 lives through RRR. She says the number of animals she can save grows each year. In 2021 alone, RRR saved 400 lives and expects to surpass that in 2022. The organization is supported 100% through fundraising and donations, which can be placed on the website rosemariesrescueranch. com and via Venmo @SusanJanett (verification 1900). Susan says she finds most of her foster families though Facebook posts and that those interested in fostering or learning more can friend/message her there or by email at SusanRescue@aol.com.

Guerriero Gelato Donated Meals and Groceries to Over 60,000 People During the Pandemic By Jackie Schatell

O

ver the last two years, Mike Guerriero, who owns Guerriero Gelato in Caldwell and Montclair, has been doing everything he can to help keep people fed throughout the pandemic. When the pandemic started, Mike says he knew he wanted to help. At the onset of the pandemic, Mike and his wife, Breanna, decided to donate their full salaries for the first six months. They also told suppliers to keep dropping off regular supplies of things like dairy products, paper products, and cleaning supplies, which they gave away to those who needed the items. Mike says that when people started posting messages on Facebook of things they needed, he and his team started delivering the items to them during ice cream deliveries. In 2020-2021, Mike says that he sent out 60,000 meals and groceries, and he is still doing it in 2022 because people are still in need. “People are living paycheck to paycheck,” says Mike. He donated 1,000 meals a week for 6-7 months, with partners like Sorrento Bakery, Calabria in Livingston, Toni’s Kitchen in Montclair, North Jersey Mutual Aid, Black Lives Matter Paterson, and to the Community Outreach Program of Our Lady of Mt Carmel. In addition to meals, Mike has been sending groceries to a local senior center and sends over ice cream too. In addition, since 2020, Mike has sent out 10,000 ice cream portions to Mountainside Hospital, sometimes up to 250-300 a week. He also donated ice cream socials to a senior center and to the police. And, through Adopt a Family efforts, he delivered ice cream cakes and gift cards. “We have done everything we can to help keep people alive and in good spirits,” he says.

Throughout these charitable endeavors, Mike’s stores have been struggling too. Unfortunately, in January, Mike had to close the Montclair location for a few days because of Covid. His stores which serve ice cream, gelato, Italian ices, and soft serve, offering over 100 handmade products including freshly baked cookies, have been in Caldwell for 16 years, and in Montclair for seven years. There are plans to open a new store in Pine Brook in the works. Mike says he will continue his charitable efforts for as long as he can because “it is important to help others in time of crisis.” He is grateful to his customers, who patronize his establishments, and to the ones who voted for his ice cream parlors in the Suburban Essex Best of Essex contest, in which Guerriero Gelato won for five consecutive years. Guerriero Gelato’s wins were as follows: 2021 Bronze, (there was no contest in 2020), 2019 Silver, 2018 Silver, 2017 Gold, and 2016 Bronze.

hat makes a local business successful? Excellent customer service? Superb eyewear selection? Enthusiastic caring staff? All of the above have contributed to the success of Roseland Eye Care. Founded by Kurt Behrle more than 37 years ago, Roseland Eye Care has remained steadfast to these principles. In an effort to meet customer’s growing needs, Roseland Eye Care is pleased to announce the addition of new partner, Angelo Benfante. Angelo started his career in Roseland when he was 19 years old. For the past 20 years both Behrle and Benfante have had separate careers managing optical dispensaries for ophthalmology practices throughout the United States. After completing their national work experiences, both Behrle and Benfante have reunited and returned to Roseland. Their combined work experiences and similar philosophies enable them to offer customers a wealth of knowledge and best practice expertise. “We came back to where it all started-doing what we love,” said Benfante. Roseland Eye Care maintains a staff of highly trained professionals who are ready to serve the needs of their clients. The store carries a vast selection of frames and sunglasses, including exclusive eyewear, such as Matsuda, Masunaga, Barton Perreira, Maui Jim, Costa and the Rudy Project, which is an innovative sports sunglass line. Behrle and Benfante recognize the need for “great service at a fair price.” There is a choice in eyewear for all customers, from the exclusive to the most affordable. The quality of all glasses is assured, and each prescription is analyzed to ensure the best product for each client.

Recently, Roseland Eye Care has researched and contracted with a new lens laboratory to support their in house manufacturing. The same top-quality and lower prices are a result. The store offers immediate emergency services to repair or replace lenses. 22

Fun Ways to

Introduce

Physics to Kids

W

hen many of us think of physics, we think of high-level science courses taught in high school and college. The truth is that not only can you teach your child the basic principles of this branch of science at a young age, but doing so can help them understand the world around them, while laying the groundwork for a continued interest in STEAM learning.

At Home There are many ways to demonstrate basic principles of physics using household objects. However, toys designed for this purpose can be good launching pad for your quest for knowledge. The new line of marble playsets from VTech, Marble Rush, allows kids to build thrilling marble courses, send marbles into motion and compete in exciting challenges with lights and sounds. Added bonus? You’ll be introducing engineering principles at the same time! Each Marble Rush set contains color-coded blocks and easy-to-follow building instructions for kids to create a

24

Suburban Essex

variety of beginner to advanced courses, or create their own course with endless possibilities. The Marble Rush Ultimate Set and Marble Rush Launchpad Set can also be combined to create an extreme playset. Plus, the Marble Rush playsets have received the Toy Association’s STEAM Toy Accreditation seal of approval, meeting experts’ criteria for a good STEAM toy. Families can find course design instructions, along with super cool challenges that demonstrate specific physics concepts like force and friction, on the VTech website. For more information, visit vtechkids.com/ marblerush.

On-the-Go Physics truly is all around us, which means there are always opportunities to introduce concepts while on-the-go. Here are a few ideas to get you started: At a sporting event: Talk about how the ball flies through the air because of the force the athlete applied to it. Discuss how gravity is at the same time, pulling the ball down toward Earth, and

February 2022

how friction from the air around the ball applies a force that slows it down. In the car: The car is the perfect place to demonstrate the Doppler Effect and learn about sound. The next time you drive past music, a car alarm or other source of noise, ask your child to observe the way that it sounds as you get closer to it and then how it sounds as you move away from it again. Explain that the noise itself hasn’t changed, but your perception of it has because sound waves are moving differently from the point of view of the observer -- you. On a walk: Brr…it’s cold outside! The next time you’re on a walk, talk about how even the seasons can be explained by physics. The part of Earth where you live is tilted away from the sun right now, which means that sunlight is more indirect. This is also why the days are shorter this time of year! It’s never too early to bring science to life for kids. There are not only real-world examples of physics at play to discover, but new toys can make learning about these concepts a fun, exciting adventure. —StatePoint

A Team to Help Students Succeed Teacher Tutors Builds Skills and Confidence By Janis Hashe, photo by Dan Epstein

B

est of Essex, gold winner, The Teacher Tutors founder Debra Kirchen, spent years in the classroom before creating a way to engage and enrich even more students in grades K-12. From the beginning, she made it a priority to seek out incredible teachers, offer fun and engaging programs and offer transparency among parents and teachers/tutors— the pandemic has made Teacher Tutors services even more valuable. Teachers hired demonstrate not only a mastery of academics but their personality is taken into account because Kirchen believes that tutors must be able to personally relate to the students they tutor. “Teachers/ Tutors foster positive relationships with students which creates an environment conducive to learning and as a result, students’ developmental, emotional and academic needs are met at an accelerated rate,” Kirchen said. When parents contact Teacher Tutors, a series of questions identifies what their child’s specific needs are: academic, executive functioning, organizational or study skills, confidence building, and/or test prep. Then

the student is matched with a tutor, “who also acts as mentor. Everyone works as a team to aid the student’s progress.” said Kirchen. One way transparency occurs is via session notes after each session so that parents receive feedback within 24 hours of each session. Brainiax, Kirchen’s new S.T.E.A.M. enrichment program, provides after-school enrichment classes for elementary students. The Brainiax programs are offered in local schools as well as their Livingston Debbie Kirchen location. In addition, a private preschool is provided at the Livingston location. Visit BrainiaxNJ.com to view enrichment program options offered by the enrichment division of the Teacher Tutor.

College Savings Plans and New Jersey PERFECT TOGETHER—STARTING IN 2022 By Michael H. Karu, CPA/CFF/CGMA

T

he recently signed New Jersey College Affordability Act, supported by Governor Murphy, Senate President Sweeney, and Assembly Speaker Coughlin, will help New Jersey families who are saving and paying for college, as well as for those who are paying off their student loans. With the signing of the law, which was unanimously approved by the Senate, New Jersey becomes the 35th state that offers a tax benefit for contributions to an approved 529 college savings plan. This is part of a plan to make college more affordable. The new law will allow for a deduction of up to $10,000 per year for contributions to the NJ Better Education Trust or NJBEST, but would be limited to those households with taxable income of $200,000 or less. It goes in effect for contributions made in tax year 2022. 529 plans are effective savings vehicles as the contributions grow tax free and, upon withdrawal, assuming the funds are used to pay qualified education expenses, are not taxable. The law allows for an outright grant of up to $750 in a dollar-to-dollar match for contributing into a 529 plan with NJBEST. However, it is limited to household with gross income of $75,000 or less.

Michael H. Karu, CPA/CFF

Another benefit of the new law is a deduction of up to $10,000 for in-state tuition. Again, it would be limited to taxpayers with household income of $200,000 or less. The last piece of the legislation, also limited to taxpayers with household income of $200,000 or less, would allow a tax deduction of up to $2,500 for qualifying student loan payments towards New Jersey College Loans to Assist State Students or NJCLASS. NJCLASS loans are available to NJ residents and students.

Mr. SAT Teaches Both Skills and Confidence

Rich Goldman

By Janis Hashe

I

n his years working with testprep giants Kaplan and Princeton Review, Mr. SAT founder/owner Rich Goldman discovered the most effective way for students to prepare for SAT/ACT tests is to “dive right in” to test questions. That, combined with his focus on raising students’ confidence in their intuitive abilities, led him to create the wide range of tutoring options he now offers, including group and private sessions. “The best teachers don’t just teach how to solve questions, but also how to trust yourself,” he said.

MONTCLAIR COOPERATIVE SCHOOL Experience Progressive Education Early Ages to 8th Grade

Group classes can have both economic and motivational benefits, as students learn from others’ questions and successes. Ideally, students should enroll at least three months before test dates. In every case, a free one-hour session helps determine student needs, and if the student/tutor match works. His goals are helping students achieve the highest possible scores, and providing satisfaction with their experience.

A learning environment that nurtures academic excellence, creativity, and independent thinking.

any impressive achievements of black men and women have been made over the years. • Harriet Tubman escaped slavery to become a leading abolitionist. She led hundreds of enslaved people to freedom along the route of the Underground Railroad. • Alice Ball was an African American chemist who developed the first successful treatment for those suffering from Hansen’s disease (leprosy). • Martin Luther King Jr. was a scholar and minister who led the civil rights movement. After his assassination, he was memorialized by Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Celebrating BLACK HISTORY Month F

ebruary is Black History Month, a great opportunity to celebrate African Americans’ many achievements throughout U.S. history. Since 1976, this annual celebration has recognized the contributions of black Americans to our country.

In 1915, Harvard-educated historian Carter G. Woodson and minister Jesse Moorland founded what’s now known as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. That organization established Negro History Week in 1926, which strived to inspire schools and communities to organize local celebrations and host performances and lectures. Negro History Week was the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. President Lincoln was the 16th U.S. president and paved the way for the abolition of slavery with his Emancipation Proclamation. Douglass was an escaped slave turned activist and author, and a prominent leader in the abolitionist movement to end slavery. The civil rights movement of the 1960s helped elevate Negro History Week to national prominence… and turn it into a month-long celebration. As a result, in 1976, President Gerald Ford made things official, proclaiming February to be Black History Month.

Esoteric PAINTINGS BY KORTEZ Portrait of the artist and story by Dan Epstein

T

he paintings by Kortez simply stop you in your tracks. No kidding: they are visually bold, and subjectively often provocative. You can’t help finding yourself thinking about his commentaries about life as an African American while simply being transfixed by the color and graphics. As a working creative with an international reputation, Kortez modestly often still considers himself simply a Newark Artist. He calls his work “Esoteric Urbanism” and it is found on traditional canvases, furniture, and fashions. Kortez is also known for his work as a DJ specializing in vintage vinyl, but it’s his visual work which drew our attention. In Negro Digest, a 36x48 mixed media collage made with acrylic paint and elements taken from beauty ads found in vintage copies of Ebony magazine, Kortez comments on the dated beauty ideals foisted on African Americans in his childhood in the 1960’s which seem to feature women with light skin and European features. He asks: What is beauty, and what is your relationship to beauty? The title of the work is taken from a text element which is found in the assembled work.

Fish-Eyed Fool February 2022

Assata

Urbanism Fish-Eyed Fool is 12x16 portrait also created from the artist’s imagination. In a strange twist of fate, a friend pointed out that the imaginary face looked remarkably like a neighbor character who often wandered around with a glassy-eyed stare. Once again referencing African American culture from decades past, the name was used by a character in the TV show Sanford & Son to describe the character of Fred Sanford. The face and background are acrylic and the body a collage of newspaper clippings, many with hidden messages about cultural references. Consider his 16x20 portrait, Assata. It’s a striking visual of a woman done in bold colors in which he combines acrylic paint with fabric remnants found in the workshop of his wife’s fashion studio. While highly stylized, this image of an imaginary woman speaks to beauty. It’s almost impossible to simply walk by this arresting image. The colors and the use of space call you, her image offers its message: I am a bold and beautiful woman. If you’d like to find out more about this very interesting artist, visit his website. It’s a rich source of information and you’ll find much more work. Likewise, if you’d like to see some work in person and purchase a piece you can visit the gallery/shop he shares called the House of BAV (Born Again Vintage) wherein you check out a good selection of his work as well as the creative fashion UpCycled work made by his wife fashion designer Bridgett Artise.

he goal at Montclair Rejuvenation Center is to enhance a client’s appearance by achieving a more youthful look without surgery. MRC offers a full complement of services that include Botox® HA dermal fillers, facials, waxing, laser hair removal, PRP hair restoration, vitamin drips and spray tans—to name a few. Among the most sought-after service is laser hair removal, a proven safe and effective treatment that utilizes a Diode Laser, safe for all skin types. Cofounder and director, Ed Fritz states, “Montclair Rejuvenation Center offers in-demand aesthetic treatments at affordable prices.” Ed and his wife, Kelly DiStefano, MD have owned the aesthetics med spa in Verona for five years and recently expanded to a second location in West Caldwell.

Each client’s course of treatment begins with an in-depth consultation to select an appropriate treatment plan, with the patient’s goals and safety as the utmost concern. What sets Montclair Rejuvenation Center apart from other Medspas, is it’s offering of some of the most advanced skin rejuvenation treatments found in the area. MRC has seen over the last year the emergence of PRP treatments for both skin rejuvenation as well as for hair restoration.

device that delivers wavelengths of intense pulsated light to targeted areas of the face, hands or chest to remove brown spots. MRC is also the area’s largest Coolsculpting Center in Essex County. The center has two Coolsculpting devices and two Elite Coolsculpting systems to help their patients get rid of stubborn fat in key parts of the body. CoolSculpting® is a non-surgical fat reduction treatment that is rated number one by Modern Aesthetics.

PRP uses the regenerative power of platelets to deliver plateletrich plasma (PRP) to the areas being treated. Clients may opt for PepFactor instead of PRP. PepFactor which is like PRP is the only bioidentical, protein-based product available that increases collagen and elastin to help wrinkly skin.

Another aspect that sets Montclair Rejuvenation Center apart is its highly credentialed staff. Dr. DiStefano has aesthetics in her veins. Her father is the renowned plastic and reconstructive surgeon Kenneth DiStefano, MD, who has practiced in Montclair and Mountainside Hospital for over 40 years. From him, Dr. DiStefano has learned from an early age the importance of improving one’s physical appearance and, by extension, emotional health. The staff also is comprised of nurse practitioners, registered nurses and estheticians.

To help improve complexion changes that come with age, such as age spots, sunspots and spider veins, an IPL photo facial may be what’s best for you. This procedure uses a hand-held

Montclair Rejuvenation Center’s goal is to help clients look and feel their best. One trend that Mr. Fritz acknowledged, is that women are getting Botox® injections at a younger age. “Many people wait until they have lines or wrinkles to consider Botox®. If you begin treatment at a younger age, the wrinkles don’t form which ultimately means that you will use less product at a later age.” Montclair Rejuvenation Center caters to a fully diversified patient base. Appointments may be booked online or via calls to the office. MRC offers free consultations for patients to speak to a professional about their rejuvenation goals. MRC also offers gift cards for all those who want to surprise their significant others all year round and ideally for special occasions like Valentine’s Day.

“In addition to the physical health effects of the coronavirus pandemic, there were negative impacts to our local economy and our residents’ financial health. Presenting a 2022 budget with a zero percent tax increase while preserving services is recognition of the financial hardships experienced by our residents during these difficult times.” – JOSEPH N. DIVINCENZO, JR.

Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr., Essex County Executive and the Board of County Commissioners Present

A 2022 Essex County Budget with a Zero Percent Property Tax Increase! STABILIZING COUNTY FINANCES • Our proposed 2022 Essex County Budget includes a 0% property tax increase to fund the County portion of your tax bill. (State statutes allow local governments to increase property taxes to 2% annually.) • Over the last three years, we have limited County property tax increases to 0.37%. • Over the last 10 years, we have limited County property tax increases to 1.16%. • Since 2003, we have held County property tax increases to 2.04%, the fourth lowest in the state behind Hunterdon, Monmouth and Burlington counties. • We have presented our County Budget before the State Deadline of January 15th for the last 19 years.

STRENGTHENING OUR FINANCIAL FOUNDATION • In 2015, we earned a Aaa bond rating from Moody’s Investors Services, the first time Essex received the highest rating. • We received 16 upgrades in our bond rating, transforming our lowest junk bond rating into a Aaa rating, the highest available. • We transformed an inherited $64 million deficit in 2003 into an $85.9 million fund balance. • Shared service agreements with other government agencies and fees generates about $111.4 million in recurring revenue. • We instituted a “debt diet” in 2007. This reduces our bond debt payments, which will fall from $127 million in 2022 to $54.5 million in 2028.

Taste How Delicious Healthy Can Be TS Ma is a Chinese restaurant unlike most you’ve been used to. The very different spin on both traditional Chinese dishes and their own creations you find here revolves around two words: healthy and delicious. At TS Ma, the dishes are created using only very fresh and high quality ingredients; you’ll never find a gloppy sauce thickened with cornstarch. Make a point to try the Crispy Shrimp with Honey Walnuts pictured here. The shrimp are lightly fried and tossed with a rich honey-citrus and mayonnaise dressing and topped with honey-glazed walnuts. Ours came with broccoli that still had a delightful crunch. Owner Thomas Ma points out that TS Ma offers many Gluten Free options, and is very happy to accommodate special diet requirements. Please note that at this time it’s takeout or delivery only. Check the website for menu, hours, and other details. Enjoy the convenience as well as the food.

How to Choose a Summer Camp Your Kids Will Love and You Approve By Kimberly Blaker

S

ummer camp offers kids plenty of benefits, and many kids are thrilled with the idea of going away to summer camp. Still, for some kids, particularly those who are shy, introverted, or homebodies, the thought of going away for a night, let alone a week or more, can cause considerable anxiety. When kids are adamantly opposed, forcing summer camp on them may not be in their best interest. But for kids who are eager – or at least willing to give it a shot without much fuss – summer camp offers opportunities kids may not have elsewhere. Summer camp provides kids the following benefits: • fosters independence • a place to develop new and lasting friendships • development of new skills • discovery of new interests and hobbies • the opportunity for creative expression • a break from being plugged-in daily exercise

What are the staff’s qualifications?

What is the daily schedule for campers?

Many summer camps use teens to staff the camps. Teens make excellent mentors and can bring liveliness to summer camp programs. However, the programs themselves should be developed by professionals and have professional oversight to ensure kids are getting the most from their camp experience.

Ask for a daily itinerary, so you know your child will be getting everything you and your child anticipate from the program.

• improves their self-esteem • teaches kids to work with others • makes them feel part of a community • prevents or reduces summer learning loss Once you and your child have narrowed the list down you’ll want to investigate the camps further. There are several things you’ll want to consider.

48

Suburban Essex

How does the camp ensure your child’s safety? Find out what kind of safety training the camp provides its staffers. Also, is there staff on hand at all times that knows CPR? What are the camp’s procedures in the event your child becomes ill, has an accident, or an emergency?

February 2022

What are the rules? Each camp has its own set of rules. So, find out whether your child is allowed to call you. If it’s a summer-long residential camp, can parents come and visit? Can kids bring along a cell phone or electronics? Also, how much money can they bring, and how is it managed? Keep in mind, although there are many great camps, no camp is likely to offer everything precisely the way you want it. Just choose the one that best fits your child and satisfies your most important criteria. Remember, your child will have many summers to come and plenty more opportunities to work in more exciting camp experiences.

Health, Beauty & Wellness

FEBRUARY IS AMERICAN HEART MONTH:

Everyday Self-Care Routines for a HEALTHY Heart D evoting a little time every day to care for yourself can go a long way toward protecting the health of your heart. Simple self-care, such as taking a moment to de-stress, giving yourself time to move more, preparing healthier meals, and not cheating on sleep can all benefit your heart.

It may be easier than you think to “put your heart” into your daily routine. Each Sunday, look at your week’s schedule and carve out 30 minutes daily for heart-healthy practices. Take an online yoga class, prepare a heart-healthy recipe, schedule your bedtime to get at least seven hours of sleep, or make a medication checklist. Then seek out support from others, even if it’s online or via a phone call, to help you stick to your goals. Here are few self-care tips to try every day to make your heart a priority:

Self-Care Sunday

Wellness Wednesday

Follow Friday

Find a moment of serenity every Sunday. Spend some quality time on yourself.

Don’t waffle on your wellness. Move more, eat a fruit or vegetable you’ve never tried, make a plan to quit smoking or vaping, or learn the signs of a heart attack or stroke. You could be having a heart attack if you have chest and upper body pain or discomfort, shortness of breath, cold sweats, nausea, or lightheadedness. You might be having a stroke if you have numbness in the face, arm, or leg; confusion; trouble talking or seeing; dizziness; or a severe headache.

Follow inspiring people and pages on social media, or text a friend to help you stick to your self-care goals. Remember to take care of your mental health, too. Two of the main hurdles to self-care are depression and a lack of confidence, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.

Mindful Monday

Be mindful about your health and regularly monitor your blood pressure or blood sugar if needed. Keep an eye on your weight to make sure it stays within or moves toward a healthy range. Being aware of your health status is a key to making positive change.

Tasty Tuesday Choose how you want to approach eating healthier. Start small by pepping up your meals with a fresh herb or spice as a salt substitute. Get adventurous and prepare a simple, new, heart-healthy recipe. 52

SAD? Lighten Up

W

hen the clocks fall back and the days start to shorten, our hours in the sunlight become scarce. This can cause a lot of people to feel less energetic, moody and unhappy. For some, the seasonal change actually leads to a type of depression called seasonal affective disorder (also called SAD). One way to alleviate some of these symptoms is light therapy. Although light therapy is not a cure, it may increase your energy levels, regulate sleep and boost your mood. During light therapy, you sit near a light box for an extended period of time—most people choose to do it in the morning. In order for it to be effective, you should be relatively close to the light, and facing it with your eyes open. Aside from that, you’re free to do your makeup, read a book, surf the web or do whatever you’d like. The amount of time you should spend in front of the light varies depending on the amount of LUX the lamp produces, but is typically between 30 minutes and two hours. Light therapy is generally safe, but it’s always good to discuss with your doctor before you try a new treatment, especially if you have a history of skin cancer, or have a condition or are taking a medication that makes your skin more sensitive to light or your eyes vulnerable to light damage.

A Discussion with Frank Del Gaudio By Jackie Schatell

A

s part of our monthly column where we introduce the public to Essex County Departments and the people who lead them, this month, Suburban Essex Magazine interviewed Director of Health and Rehabilitation and the Essex County Hospital Center, Frank Del Gaudio.

Please tell us about you and your background. I have been working in the healthcare field since 1991 and specialize in risk management, environmental safety and health, and facilities management. I joined Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo’s staff in 2004 as the County Risk Manager and became Director of the Department of Health and Rehabilitation and the Hospital Center in 2013. As director, I have worked with various law enforcement agencies to create a Jail Diversion Program to divert individuals suffering from mental health issues from incarceration to the hospital where they can receive the care and treatment they need. This program was expanded to include a Veterans Mental Health Jail Diversion Program.

When did the Hospital Center open? The original Hospital Center, formerly known as Overbrook, was dedicated in 1905 under superintendent Dr. Daniel M. Dill and designed by the architectural firm of Hurd and Sutton. County Executive DiVincenzo understood that the old complex was no longer functional and needed to be updated. Under his leadership, the new Essex County Hospital Center opened on February 27, 2007.

Essex County Hospital Center

Frank Del Gaudio (left) was honored as one of the Essex County Italian Heritage Month honorees last month by Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. (third from left). Frank was accompanied at the ceremony by his parents, Frank and Mary Del Gaudio.

What is the Hospital Center’s mission? The Essex County Hospital Center is committed to providing cutting-edge psychiatric and behavioral health care and support for individuals with serious and persistent mental illness, and their families, in order to support their achievement of optimum wellness and recovery.

Who does the Hospital Center serve? The Essex County Hospital Center consists of a 180-bed intermediate specialty psychiatric hospital serving the residents of Essex, Passaic and Middlesex Counties. We serve as a bridge for those that require longer courses of treatment than can be provided by the local shortterm care mental health facilities.

What are the Division of Community Health Services offered? The Essex County Division of Community Health Services includes the Essex County Department of Health, Domestic Violence Assessment Center, support of the Governor’s Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, The Municipal Alliance to Prevent Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, Office of the Disabled, Intoxicated Driver Resource Center, Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and Special Child Health February 2022

Services including the Early Intervention Program providing services to thousands of Essex County children suffering from various forms of autism and mental disabilities.

What is something I haven’t asked that you want people to know about the Hospital Center? The Essex County Hospital Center currently employs 340 full- and parttime staff members who are extremely dedicated to providing the highest level of care to our patient population. The qualifications, certifications, and educational credentials of our staff contribute to our mission and passion for continuously working to improve patient care. We currently are accredited by the Joint Commission and the Medical Society of New Jersey as a provider of continuing medical education credits for physicians.

What is something unique that we wouldn’t know about the Hospital Center? We are currently planning for the 69th Holiday Concert in December where our patients and employees will perform various holiday favorites to celebrate the season. We also hold an annual Patient Carnival every May to promote Mental Health Awareness Month.

Relaxation Tips to Relieve Stress Relax anytime and anyplace, no reservations required! 1. Breathe deeply from your belly,

which shoots oxygen through your bloodstream, relaxing you immediately. Slowing inhale through your nose, feeling the start in your abdomen and work up to the top of your head.

2. Smile! Even a fake grin sends nerve

impulses to a key emotional center in your brain, shifting you into calmness.

3. Massage the center of your palm in

circles with the opposable thumb. It works on reflex points, acting like a whole body mini-massage.

4. Getting angry? Take a quick walk, get up and stretch, or put the annoying caller on hold and count to 10 while breathing deeply.

5. Laugh…It releases tons of stress. By lowering cortisol, your body’s stress hormone and boosts endorphins, which help your mood.

6. Shake it off—stretch your arms and

shake your hands, fingers apart for 10-15 seconds. Imagine you are shaking off all the anger and stress of the day.

Vitamin Patches Are the Clean Way to Help with Sleep, Energy, Immunity, Focus and Stress

B

ased on a recent study, 92% of the population suffers from at least one mineral or vitamin deficiency and founders of The Patch Brand, Gil Brozki and David Winthers, are passionate about educating consumers on elevating and simplifying overall wellness. The duo’s journey into the wellness space began when Gil, who is allergic to gluten and dairy, started to focus on improving his gut health and decreasing his anxiety and stress levels. They took their health into their own hands, and after years of R&D, The Patch Brand was ready to be shared. The Patch Brand—vitamin-infused patches with powerful ingredients that fit perfectly into fast-paced lifestyles—can help with sleep, energy, immunity, focus and stress. Unlike gummies and pills that only partially absorb into your system, this clean and simple alternative releases 100% of the vitamins by way of a small, discrete patch during a 24-hour period. The daily vitamin patches are made with the purest botanical blends used by herbalists for years and safely absorb into your body without any fillers or additives. The vitamin patches contain the same bioavailability as traditional capsules, without any of the side effects or harmful ingredients, steadily releasing pure vitamins over 24 hours to offer an even dose through the day or night. The image on the patch slowly disappears to indicate that

How’s Your Attitude? “The best way to cheer yourself up is to try to cheer somebody else up.” —Mark Twain

E

very once in a while I get in a rut. I think everyone does now and then. The key is, how fast can you climb out and get back on track?

Sometimes it might be lack of energy. Maybe not enough sleep or not eating right. Or it could be that the people around you are bringing you down. Whatever the case may be—it all begins with an attitude adjustment and a plan of “action” to get back on track. Even the smallest action can ignite a movement in a positive direction. I would like to introduce you to Bobby Collins, whom I have known for over 30 years and is one of the funniest comics alive. He is ‘Mr. Positive’—If anyone knows how to recharge your attitude, Bobby’s the one. Here are a few of his thoughts on the subject: God first, family second, career third. God first. If you put one ahead of the other you always have to get back on where you got off. I have a lot of faith and sometimes things don’t work out my way and I get bummed

out, but my faith carries me through. I remind myself to stay strong and stay true rather than get sad and insecure. Family second. I have to say how rejuvenating it is hanging out with my family. Just seeing my wife’s smile; and hanging out and laughing with my kids. It’s the simple things that help us get back our energy and a resilient attitude that we often take for granted. Career third. I’m a performer, a comic. I travel throughout every city in every state. When I get up on stage there are people of all different nationalities and many different cultures. In the audiences, there are some faces that I can tell are right in the moment with me… I am so happy and they’re so happy they came to the show to change how they feel—to laugh and enjoy themselves. Then there are the other faces that are hiding. I can look out into the audience and it appears they are hurting, sad or maybe they are angry or insecure. I believe they came to the comedy club specifically so that my performance will turn them. Know that it’s ok to feel that way. We all feel those things sometimes… It makes me realize that we all can change our attitude for the better by focusing on making others around you feel better. Never underestimate the power of lifting up others as it in turn will end up lifting your spirits as well.”
