Mom’s Diaper Drive Donates Over 26,000 Diapers to the Needy

hen Sara Franks of Livingston had her son Artie in February 2021, and started buying diapers and formula, she began thinking about “the reality of expenses going into caring for a newborn and the mothers struggling to buy these items for their children.” It led her to wonder how to give back. She found that the Apostles’ House in Newark had an extreme need for diapers, so she started a diaper drive and collected over 26,000 diapers, as well as wipes, gently used clothing, and more. She also connected with Hello Bello, which donated 140 of packs of diapers. Sara says, “I thought this would be an easy campaign for people to rally around.” She is grateful to all who donated so generously and plans to run another drive. “I hope my efforts inspire others to do something similar,” she said. Donations are still coming in and people can donate directly to Apostles’ House.

Cousins Raise Money for Local Animal Shelter

irst cousins Nora Sears, 7, and Ruby, 4, of Little Falls, and Chloe Zeig, 5, of North Caldwell, ran a hot cocoa stand on New Year’s Day, which raised $204 to be donated to the ASPCA. The girls said they share a love for animals, which is how they chose the animal shelter for their donation. There was no set price for the cocoa, rather, patrons were invited to donate whatever they wanted. Mom Jenny Sears said, “We were really surprised at how many people stopped by to give so generously. It made the whole spirit of the day even better. We may just make this a yearly tradition.” Mom Emily Fellner Zeig said they are “proud of their children for coming up with the idea of wanting to give back.” Monies are still welcome and coming in via Venmo @brahsears.

4th Grade Best Friends Create Charitable Business

ight 4th graders who have been friends since preschool have started a charitable business called JamminBraceletz where they sell personalized handmade bracelets and donate a portion of the profits to a different charity each month. Their parents say they thought starting this business “would be a great social exercise to give the girls something proactive to do off their electronics during the pandemic.” This winter, in their first month in business, the girls sold 140 bracelets, which go for $6 to $7 each, for a total of $1200. People can also donate more than this to the causes. The young entrepreneurs donated $500 to the Ronald McDonald house in December, and plan to donate to the Livingston-based pediatric cancer charity Trial Blazers in January, and to the American Heart Association in February. The bracelets can be purchased at Etsy/shop/JamminBraceletz, on Instagram @JamminBraceletz, and via Venmo at Lauren-Merel.

12th Grader Publishes Book on Alternative History

rishna Bhatt, a senior at Livingston High School, has published the first book in his series: “What If: Alternative Histories.” The book fosters a change in perspective from traditional history— spinning fascinating counterfactuals. Bhatt says he wants to shake things up for children in elementary through middle school to make history more of an exploration and search for interesting questions. He says, “I want to make sure the next generation understands that history is more than just memorizing names and dates. History is about human decisions, greed, power, diplomacy, religious quests, ethical struggles, victories and almost victories.” The first book contains three stories where readers will “experience what happens when history becomes distorted and timelines change.” Krishna says he loves the experience of presenting history education in unique ways and is already working on his second book. “What If: Alternative Histories” is available for purchase on Amazon. 12

Verona Resident Walks 60 Miles for Breast Cancer

ecently, Samantha Klabenesh-Dixon, of Verona, raised $2300 and walked 60 miles for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk in San Diego. She has been participating in this event since 2007, where she first did so to honor a co-worker’s wife. This year, she walked in honor of a friend with breast cancer. To train, she says she walked all over Verona and to West Orange and West Caldwell. She also joined online fitness challenges and has received about 15 medals for walking over 100 miles each month. She says she enjoys the camaraderie of the Komen 3-Day walk and that for three days a year, “the world is as it should be with everyone being kind and caring for one another.” Samantha is proud of what she has accomplished and is already looking forward to next year’s walk, which she hopes her husband Christopher will join her on.

Livingston Resident to Adapt His Children’s Book into an Animated TV Series

ivingston resident Barry Farber has announced that he will be converting his children’s book, “The Adventures of Little Billy, In Search of the Magic Tree,” into an animated television series. The characters give advice to Billy, the main character in the book, symbolizing core life values including service, attitude, courage, empathy, and determination. The upcoming television series will be voiced by football player Ottis Jerome Anderson, comedian Bobby Collins, actresses Terra Mackintosh and Eden Kontecz, The Amazing Kreskin, and Farber’s middle child, Jordan. Barry says, “It is important to read to children when they are young” and that he “created the characters to be entertaining, with values children can relate to and learn from.” The show will air in early 2022 on cable stations across the US. Rosemarie’s Rescue Ranch Offers Unique Foster to Adopt Model By Jackie Schatell

hen Susan Janett, co-founder of Rosemarie’s Rescue Ranch (RRR), which is operated out of Verona, started her endeavor, she never imagined how large it would grow. What started out in 2017 with her partner Rosemarie Cafiero, who rescued over 7,000 dogs in her lifetime before succumbing to cancer, has grown to a dog fostering organization with 50+ volunteers that pulls dogs from kill shelters and places them in foster situations from within the US and beyond.

“Rosemarie’s rescue offers a breakthrough in the adoption process,” says Susan. The dogs are first fostered for two weeks with loving pre-approved families that will have first dibs on adoption. “This gives families a period of time to adjust to a new dog in the household and see if it is a good fit, rather than just meeting a dog for a quick 15-minute meet and greet and then taking it home. It’s like a trial, a chance for the family and the dog to decompress together. No pressure. No long-term commitment, to get a feel for one another at home and see if the chemistry is there.” In addition, each foster family is paired with a personal liaison from the organization, who can be contacted for all questions and concerns. “We have about a 98% success rate with our program,” says Susan, who explains that most fosters “fail,” which translates to adopting their dog. “It’s the ultimate goal of the program,” she adds. If the family chooses not to move forward, Susan will enlist their help in reviewing approved applications and playing an active role in selecting a good forever family together. And if moving that dog to another foster is requested, she says she will always take a dog back at any time because she will “always do what is right for the dogs she saves.” Susan says she has applications coming in daily and the turnaround can be as short as 24-48 hours to find the dog a new loving foster placement. “Being flexible is part of our success formula,” she says. Susan personally looks over all prospective foster family applications, with input from her team and committees, and all dogs are first tested for temperament, personality, and how well they get along with other pets, kids, and adults prior to being “pulled.” In addition, all dogs see the vet, get all the necessary shots, and treatments needed. “All of our rescues are family-friendly,” she says. And we send them to their foster homes with all the supplies necessary to make the transition easy including crates, blankets, bowls, toys, and food. She operates a small brick and mortar in Verona, which sells new and gently used items for people to buy. The monies raised help support the organization. 14

Since 2017, Susan has saved over 800 lives through RRR. She says the number of animals she can save grows each year. In 2021 alone, RRR saved 400 lives and expects to surpass that in 2022. Guerriero Gelato Donated Meals and Groceries to Over 60,000 People During the Pandemic By Jackie Schatell

ver the last two years, Mike Guerriero, who owns Guerriero Gelato in Caldwell and Montclair, has been doing everything he can to help keep people fed throughout the pandemic. When the pandemic started, Mike says he knew he wanted to help. At the onset of the pandemic, Mike and his wife, Breanna, decided to donate their full salaries for the first six months. They also told suppliers to keep dropping off regular supplies of things like dairy products, paper products, and cleaning supplies, which they gave away to those who needed the items. Mike says that when people started posting messages on Facebook of things they needed, he and his team started delivering the items to them during ice cream deliveries. In 2020-2021, Mike says that he sent out 60,000 meals and groceries, and he is still doing it in 2022 because people are still in need. “People are living paycheck to paycheck,” says Mike. He donated 1,000 meals a week for 6-7 months, with partners like Sorrento Bakery, Calabria in Livingston, Toni’s Kitchen in Montclair, North Jersey Mutual Aid, Black Lives Matter Paterson, and to the Community Outreach Program of Our Lady of Mt Carmel. In addition to meals, Mike has been sending groceries to a local senior center and sends over ice cream too. In addition, since 2020, Mike has sent out 10,000 ice cream portions to Mountainside Hospital, sometimes up to 250-300 a week. He also donated ice cream socials to a senior center and to the police. And, through Adopt a Family efforts, he delivered ice cream cakes and gift cards. “We have done everything we can to help keep people alive and in good spirits,” he says.

Throughout these charitable endeavors, Mike’s stores have been struggling too. Unfortunately, in January, Mike had to close the Montclair location for a few days because of Covid. His stores which serve ice cream, gelato, Italian ices, and soft serve, offering over 100 handmade products including freshly baked cookies, have been in Caldwell for 16 years, and in Montclair for seven years. There are plans to open a new store in Pine Brook in the works. Mike says he will continue his charitable efforts for as long as he can because “it is important to help others in time of crisis.” He is grateful to his customers, who patronize his establishments, and to the ones who voted for his ice cream parlors in the Suburban Essex Best of Essex contest, in which Guerriero Gelato won for five consecutive years. Guerriero Gelato’s wins were as follows: 2021 Bronze, (there was no contest in 2020), 2019 Silver, 2018 Silver, 2017 Gold, and 2016 Bronze.

“Inside Out” Exhibit Showcasing Artists from JSDD’s WAE Center

ick-off the new year with the West Orange Arts Council’s first show of 2022, the JSDD WAE Center’s “Inside Out” Exhibit. This is a hybrid art experience to be viewed online or by appointment. On display is the work of over 20 WAE Center artists whom are self-driven and self-taught. This genre of work is referred to as “Outsider Art,” meaning that the artist is not formally trained yet still create from an organic place of knowledge and experience. The visual representations of each artist’s own raw experiences, thoughts, and feelings communicate their perceptions of the world around them, in varied and vibrant form. JSDD’s (Jewish Service for the Developmentally Disabled) WAE (Wellness, Art & Enrichment) Center is a nonprofit organization and a holistic and expressive arts learning center for adults with IDD. In addition to fine arts programming, the WAE Center provides an environment where members learn, create, express themselves, and develop meaningful relationships. ast February in the middle of the pandemic, Susanne Neckermann, made the decision to open up a women’s specialty clothing boutique on Valley Road in the heart of Upper Montclair. After 10 years running and then closing Susanne N, she knew she had to make a change to adapt with the times. February 6: The 197-minute reconstructed version of “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World” (1963), with the Cinema Shorthand Society Facebook page curator John Chasse. An all-star cast made up of film, television, and the stage’s greatest comedians are on the hunt for $350,000 in stolen cash under the watchful eye of police capta in Spencer Tracy. February 20: “Bringing Up Baby” (1938), with Edge Media Network film journalist and playwright/screenwriter Frank Avella. What many consider to be the definitive screwball comedy features Cary Grant as a paleontologist maneuvering through a number of predicaments involving a scatterbrained heiress (Katharine Hepburn) and a leopard named Baby. February 27: “Young Frankenstein” (1974), with an appearance by local film critic Stephen Whitty. hen many of us think of physics, we think of high-level science courses taught in high school and college. The truth is that not only can you teach your child the basic principles of this branch of science at a young age, but doing so can help them understand the world around them, while laying the groundwork for a continued interest in STEAM learning.

Here are a few ideas to get you started: At a sporting event: Talk about how the ball flies through the air because of the force the athlete applied to it. Discuss how gravity is at the same time, pulling the ball down toward Earth, and

how friction from the air around the ball applies a force that slows it down. In the car: The car is the perfect place to demonstrate the Doppler Effect and learn about sound. The next time you drive past music, a car alarm or other source of noise, ask your child to observe the way that it sounds as you get closer to it and then how it sounds as you move away from it again. Explain that the noise itself hasn’t changed, but your perception of it has because sound waves are moving differently from the point of view of the observer -- you. On a walk: Brr…it’s cold outside! The next time you’re on a walk, talk about how even the seasons can be explained by physics. The part of Earth where you live is tilted away from the sun right now, which means that sunlight is more indirect. This is also why the days are shorter this time of year! It’s never too early to bring science to life for kids. College Savings Plans and New Jersey PERFECT TOGETHER—STARTING IN 2022 By Michael H. Karu, CPA/CFF/CGMA

he recently signed New Jersey College Affordability Act, supported by Governor Murphy, Senate President Sweeney, and Assembly Speaker Coughlin, will help New Jersey families who are saving and paying for college, as well as for those who are paying off their student loans. With the signing of the law, which was unanimously approved by the Senate, New Jersey becomes the 35th state that offers a tax benefit for contributions to an approved 529 college savings plan. This is part of a plan to make college more affordable. The new law will allow for a deduction of up to $10,000 per year for contributions to the NJ Better Education Trust or NJBEST, but would be limited to those households with taxable income of $200,000 or less. It goes in effect for contributions made in tax year 2022. 529 plans are effective savings vehicles as the contributions grow tax free and, upon withdrawal, assuming the funds are used to pay qualified education expenses, are not taxable. The law allows for an outright grant of up to $750 in a dollar-to-dollar match for contributing into a 529 plan with NJBEST. However, it is limited to household with gross income of $75,000 or less.

Another benefit of the new law is a deduction of up to $10,000 for in-state tuition. Again, it would be limited to taxpayers with household income of $200,000 or less. The last piece of the legislation, also limited to taxpayers with household income of $200,000 or less, would allow a tax deduction of up to $2,500 for qualifying student loan payments towards New Jersey College Loans to Assist State Students or NJCLASS. NJCLASS loans are available to NJ residents and students.

Celebrating BLACK HISTORY Month F

ebruary is Black History Month, a great opportunity to celebrate African Americans’ many achievements throughout U.S. history. Since 1976, this annual celebration has recognized the contributions of black Americans to our country.

In 1915, Harvard-educated historian Carter G. Woodson and minister Jesse Moorland founded what’s now known as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. That organization established Negro History Week in 1926, which strived to inspire schools and communities to organize local celebrations and host performances and lectures. Negro History Week was the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. President Lincoln was the 16th U.S. president and paved the way for the abolition of slavery with his Emancipation Proclamation. Douglass was an escaped slave turned activist and author, and a prominent leader in the abolitionist movement to end slavery. The civil rights movement of the 1960s helped elevate Negro History Week to national prominence… and turn it into a month-long celebration. As a result, in 1976, President Gerald Ford made things official, proclaiming February to be Black History Month.

• Rosa Parks was a civil rights activist who refused to surrender her seat to a white passenger on asegregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Her defiance sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Esoteric PAINTINGS BY KORTEZ Portrait of the artist and story by Dan Epstein

he paintings by Kortez simply stop you in your tracks. No kidding: they are visually bold, and subjectively often provocative. You can’t help finding yourself thinking about his commentaries about life as an African American while simply being transfixed by the color and graphics. As a working creative with an international reputation, Kortez modestly often still considers himself simply a Newark Artist. He calls his work “Esoteric Urbanism” and it is found on traditional canvases, furniture, and fashions. Kortez is also known for his work as a DJ specializing in vintage vinyl, but it’s his visual work which drew our attention. In Negro Digest, a 36x48 mixed media collage made with acrylic paint and elements taken from beauty ads found in vintage copies of Ebony magazine, Kortez comments on the dated beauty ideals foisted on African Americans in his childhood in the 1960’s which seem to feature women with light skin and European features. He asks: What is beauty, and what is your relationship to beauty? The title of the work is taken from a text element which is found in the assembled work.

Urbanism Fish-Eyed Fool is 12x16 portrait also created from the artist’s imagination. In a strange twist of fate, a friend pointed out that the imaginary face looked remarkably like a neighbor character who often wandered around with a glassy-eyed stare. Once again referencing African American culture from decades past, the name was used by a character in the TV show Sanford & Son to describe the character of Fred Sanford. The face and background are acrylic and the body a collage of newspaper clippings, many with hidden messages about cultural references. Consider his 16x20 portrait, Assata. It’s a striking visual of a woman done in bold colors in which he combines acrylic paint with fabric remnants found in the workshop of his wife’s fashion studio. While highly stylized, this image of an imaginary woman speaks to beauty. It’s almost impossible to simply walk by this arresting image. The colors and the use of space call you, her image offers its message: I am a bold and beautiful woman. If you’d like to find out more about this very interesting artist, visit his website. ummer camp offers kids plenty of benefits, and many kids are thrilled with the idea of going away to summer camp. Still, for some kids, particularly those who are shy, introverted, or homebodies, the thought of going away for a night, let alone a week or more, can cause considerable anxiety. When kids are adamantly opposed, forcing summer camp on them may not be in their best interest. But for kids who are eager – or at least willing to give it a shot without much fuss – summer camp offers opportunities kids may not have elsewhere. Summer camp provides kids the following benefits: • fosters independence • a place to develop new and lasting friendships • development of new skills • discovery of new interests and hobbies • the opportunity for creative expression • a break from being plugged-in daily exercise

Keep in mind, although there are many great camps, no camp is likely to offer everything precisely the way you want it. Just choose the one that best fits your child and satisfies your most important criteria. Remember, your child will have many summers to come and plenty more opportunities to work in more exciting camp experiences.

Everyday Self-Care Routines for a HEALTHY Heart D evoting a little time every day to care for yourself can go a long way toward protecting the health of your heart. Simple self-care, such as taking a moment to de-stress, giving yourself time to move more, preparing healthier meals, and not cheating on sleep can all benefit your heart.

It may be easier than you think to “put your heart” into your daily routine. Each Sunday, look at your week’s schedule and carve out 30 minutes daily for heart-healthy practices. Take an online yoga class, prepare a heart-healthy recipe, schedule your bedtime to get at least seven hours of sleep, or make a medication checklist. Then seek out support from others, even if it’s online or via a phone call, to help you stick to your goals. Here are few self-care tips to try every day to make your heart a priority:

Find a moment of serenity every Sunday. Spend some quality time on yourself.

You could be having a heart attack if you have chest and upper body pain or discomfort, shortness of breath, cold sweats, nausea, or lightheadedness. You might be having a stroke if you have numbness in the face, arm, or leg; confusion; trouble talking or seeing; dizziness; or a severe headache.

Follow inspiring people and pages on social media, or text a friend to help you stick to your self-care goals. Remember to take care of your mental health, too. Two of the main hurdles to self-care are depression and a lack of confidence, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.

Be mindful about your health and regularly monitor your blood pressure or blood sugar if needed. Keep an eye on your weight to make sure it stays within or moves toward a healthy range. Being aware of your health status is a key to making positive change.

Tasty Tuesday Choose how you want to approach eating healthier. Start small by pepping up your meals with a fresh herb or spice as a salt substitute. Get adventurous and prepare a simple, new, heart-healthy recipe. 52

hen the clocks fall back and the days start to shorten, our hours in the sunlight become scarce. This can cause a lot of people to feel less energetic, moody and unhappy. For some, the seasonal change actually leads to a type of depression called seasonal affective disorder (also called SAD). One way to alleviate some of these symptoms is light therapy. Although light therapy is not a cure, it may increase your energy levels, regulate sleep and boost your mood. During light therapy, you sit near a light box for an extended period of time—most people choose to do it in the morning. In order for it to be effective, you should be relatively close to the light, and facing it with your eyes open. Aside from that, you’re free to do your makeup, read a book, surf the web or do whatever you’d like. The amount of time you should spend in front of the light varies depending on the amount of LUX the lamp produces, but is typically between 30 minutes and two hours. Light therapy is generally safe, but it’s always good to discuss with your doctor before you try a new treatment, especially if you have a history of skin cancer, or have a condition or are taking a medication that makes your skin more sensitive to light or your eyes vulnerable to light damage.

A Discussion with Frank Del Gaudio By Jackie Schatell

s part of our monthly column where we introduce the public to Essex County Departments and the people who lead them, this month, Suburban Essex Magazine interviewed Director of Health and Rehabilitation and the Essex County Hospital Center, Frank Del Gaudio.

Please tell us about you and your background. I have been working in the healthcare field since 1991 and specialize in risk management, environmental safety and health, and facilities management. I joined Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo’s staff in 2004 as the County Risk Manager and became Director of the Department of Health and Rehabilitation and the Hospital Center in 2013. As director, I have worked with various law enforcement agencies to create a Jail Diversion Program to divert individuals suffering from mental health issues from incarceration to the hospital where they can receive the care and treatment they need. This program was expanded to include a Veterans Mental Health Jail Diversion Program.

When did the Hospital Center open? The original Hospital Center, formerly known as Overbrook, was dedicated in 1905 under superintendent Dr. Daniel M. Dill and designed by the architectural firm of Hurd and Sutton. County Executive DiVincenzo understood that the old complex was no longer functional and needed to be updated. Under his leadership, the new Essex County Hospital Center opened on February 27, 2007.

The Essex County Hospital Center is committed to providing cutting-edge psychiatric and behavioral health care and support for individuals with serious and persistent mental illness, and their families, in order to support their achievement of optimum wellness and recovery.

Who does the Hospital Center serve? The Essex County Hospital Center consists of a 180-bed intermediate specialty psychiatric hospital serving the residents of Essex, Passaic and Middlesex Counties. We serve as a bridge for those that require longer courses of treatment than can be provided by the local shortterm care mental health facilities.

What are the Division of Community Health Services offered? What is something I haven’t asked that you want people to know about the Hospital Center? The Essex County Hospital Center currently employs 340 full- and parttime staff members who are extremely dedicated to providing the highest level of care to our patient population. The qualifications, certifications, and educational credentials of our staff contribute to our mission and passion for continuously working to improve patient care. We currently are accredited by the Joint Commission and the Medical Society of New Jersey as a provider of continuing medical education credits for physicians.

What is something unique that we wouldn’t know about the Hospital Center? We are currently planning for the 69th Holiday Concert in December where our patients and employees will perform various holiday favorites to celebrate the season. We also hold an annual Patient Carnival every May to promote Mental Health Awareness Month.

very once in a while I get in a rut. I think everyone does now and then. The key is, how fast can you climb out and get back on track?

Sometimes it might be lack of energy. Maybe not enough sleep or not eating right. Or it could be that the people around you are bringing you down. Whatever the case may be—it all begins with an attitude adjustment and a plan of “action” to get back on track. Even the smallest action can ignite a movement in a positive direction. I would like to introduce you to Bobby Collins, whom I have known for over 30 years and is one of the funniest comics alive. He is ‘Mr. Positive’—If anyone knows how to recharge your attitude, Bobby’s the one. Here are a few of his thoughts on the subject: God first, family second, career third. God first. If you put one ahead of the other you always have to get back on where you got off. I have a lot of faith and sometimes things don’t work out my way and I get bummed

out, but my faith carries me through. I remind myself to stay strong and stay true rather than get sad and insecure. Family second. I have to say how rejuvenating it is hanging out with my family. Just seeing my wife’s smile; and hanging out and laughing with my kids. It’s the simple things that help us get back our energy and a resilient attitude that we often take for granted. Career third. I’m a performer, a comic. I travel throughout every city in every state. When I get up on stage there are people of all different nationalities and many different cultures. In the audiences, there are some faces that I can tell are right in the moment with me… I am so happy and they’re so happy they came to the show to change how they feel—to laugh and enjoy themselves. Then there are the other faces that are hiding. I can look out into the audience and it appears they are hurting, sad or maybe they are angry or insecure. I believe they came to the comedy club specifically so that my performance will turn them. Know that it’s ok to feel that way. We all feel those things sometimes… It makes me realize that we all can change our attitude for the better by focusing on making others around you feel better. Never underestimate the power of lifting up others as it in turn will end up lifting your spirits as well.”
