A Team to Help Students Succeed Teacher Tutors Builds Skills and Confidence By Janis Hashe, photo by Dan Epstein

est of Essex, gold winner, The Teacher Tutors founder Debra Kirchen, spent years in the classroom before creating a way to engage and enrich even more students in grades K-12. From the beginning, she made it a priority to seek out incredible teachers, offer fun and engaging programs and offer transparency among parents and teachers/tutors— the pandemic has made Teacher Tutors services even more valuable. Teachers hired demonstrate not only a mastery of academics but their personality is taken into account because Kirchen believes that tutors must be able to personally relate to the students they tutor. “Teachers/ Tutors foster positive relationships with students which creates an environment conducive to learning and as a result, students’ developmental, emotional and academic needs are met at an accelerated rate,” Kirchen said. When parents contact Teacher Tutors, a series of questions identifies what their child’s specific needs are: academic, executive functioning, organizational or study skills, confidence building, and/or test prep. Then
the student is matched with a tutor, “who also acts as mentor. Everyone works as a team to aid the student’s progress.” said Kirchen. One way transparency occurs is via session notes after each session so that parents receive feedback within 24 hours of each session. Brainiax, Kirchen’s new S.T.E.A.M. enrichment program, provides after-school enrichment classes for elementary students. The Brainiax programs are offered in local schools as well as their Livingston Debbie Kirchen location. In addition, a private preschool is provided at the Livingston location.
