editerranean Tile and Marble, a Fairfield-based tile and design showroom is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. According to general manager Glen Wyder, they will use this anniversary not only to celebrate, but also to continue their design educations. The event, which is slated for fall and will be held in conjunction with the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), will feature a presentation from a field expert. A little over five years ago Mediterranean Tile opened the doors to a second location at 7 Olcott Square in Bernardsville, bringing their hands-on and “design-driven” approach to a new bevy of customers. “It is our aspiration to offer materials that are the most innovative, of the highest quality, and the most fairly-priced in our industry,” says Wyder. And, both the Fairfield and Bernardsville locations have been working to maintain the business’ reputation for excellence and customer service. Mediterranean Tile and Marble is located at 461 Route 46 W. in Fairfield and at 7 Olcott Square in Bernardsville. They can be reached at 973-808-1267 or 908-953-9990 respectively and by visiting www.medtile.com.

Finding the Right Camp for Your Child
Y
ou’re considering a summer camp, but how do you choose? Here’s some advice from the American Camp Association to help parents sort through the possibilities. Children are ready for new experiences at different stages. Ask yourself the following questions to help gauge whether this is the summer your child will start camp.
Is your child old enough?
Children under seven may not adjust easily to being away from home. Consider day camp to prepare them for future overnight camp. Consider your child’s experiences away from home, perhaps spending the night visiting relatives or friends. Were the separations easy or difficult? Use that to guide you in this decision.
for Children, Teens, and Young Adults
longing to the community. Lifelong friendships often develop at these long summer sleepaway camps.
All-boys, all-girls, or co-ed?
Each has benefits. Single sex camps can break gender stereotypes—girls interact with women in positions of authority and boys interact with men who act as nurturers. There may be more opportunities to “be yourself ” without impressing the opposite sex. And often, brother and sister camps share some activities. Co-ed camps also mirror and prepare campers for everyday living in a co-ed world. They allow families with a boy and a girl to attend the same camp, offer diverse points of view, and break through rigid divisions set up in school when campers participate on equal footing.
Specialized Camps
Local or sleepaway?
If it’s time for camp, your next choice is between a local camp or one that’s further away. Nearby camps make visiting easy, and friends and family may be familiar with the camp. Also, your child is likely to find classmates at the same camp. A camp that’s further away, however, offers a greater variety of experiences and promotes independence, especially for teenagers. These camps are more likely to have a diversity of campers, and even different languages spoken. You’ll also have more camps to choose from.
Session length
Short sessions (1-3 weeks) are great for first-time or younger campers, giving them a chance to learn new skills, bond with other campers and staff, and get camp experience without much homesickness. Longer sessions (4-12 weeks) offer the chance to develop specialized skills, and gain a strong sense of be-
Specialized camps can offer an extraordinary experience to concentrate on one or two activities, while providing traditional activities as well. In these camps, parents can expect an increased proficiency during the camping session. Campers also deepen their knowledge and skill in a particular area of interest or ability. Parents of children with special needs are pleased to learn about the range of camp activities that help kids be kids first. Special needs camps offer activities geared to campers’ abilities. The staff is knowledgeable, with expertise to understand campers’ strengths and challenges. And the atmosphere is supportive and fun. No matter which type of camp you choose or how long your child attends, the experience will open up a world of discovery and learning. Camps, according to the American Camp Association (ACA), value children for who they are and who they may become. “Camp gives each child a world of good,” its experts state.

e wanted a walk-in closet for our master bedroom and met with a dozen closet companies, but all looked at the structural challenges and just shook their heads. Then we met Steven. He understood exactly what we were trying to achieve. He took many measurements, asked many questions, made some excellent suggestions and returned shortly thereafter with a drawing that depicted exactly what we wanted. He and his team arrived on the scheduled date and, a day and a half later with very little mess, delivered the perfect closet. It was exactly what we had discussed, it was beautiful, all the structural issues were disguised, and the quality of the workmanship was impeccable. — T. Far Fetched Imports:
Exotic Home Furnishings from Around the Globe
Y
ou’d never know that behind an unremarkable storefront on busy Route 10 East in East Hanover is a hidden gem just waiting to be discovered. But Far Fetched Imports is exactly that. Walking into Far Fetched Imports, an unusual home furnishings store filled with marvelous pieces from around the world, is like taking a trip to far-flung lands. The twofloor showroom features pieces specially chosen by manager/buyer David Stanton from Indonesia, Thailand, China, Vietnam, Morocco and India. “Everyone’s surprised when they walk into our showroom – it’s a gem in the middle of the highway,” says Stanton. Far Fetched Imports carries unusual solid-wood furniture, accessories and lighting that can turn your home into a conversation starter. Each piece is hand-selected for its own distinctive characteristics. Armoires, cabinets, sideboards, upholstered chairs, television stands, side tables and a large variety of accent pieces make up the collection,
which, Stanton says, “transcends time and place and is sure to spice up your home. Furniture as functional art is our vision.” A prominent feature of the “far fetched” items in the showroom’s offerings is the use of reclaimed and repurposed materials, a sign of their commitment to responsibly sourcing their items from overseas. “We search the world for our pieces,” says Stanton. “There’s no other store like us.” Many of the exotic furnishings come from vendors with whom Stanton and his business partner Mark Crotty have developed a relationship over the years. Shipments arrive weekly, and the eclectic, yet practical, items are well priced. Sourced from natural, sustainable materials, the exceptional collection appears in carefully arranged vignettes, allowing customers to envision how that particular adobe pottery or coffee table made from a repurposed door would look in their own home. Sometimes they even sell items on approval, so customers can see how a furnishing fits in their home—and try another piece if that
one doesn’t work with their décor or vision. That commitment to their customers begins on the showroom floor. Hard sells and pressure tactics don’t exist at Far Fetched Imports, which is celebrating 10 years in the same location. In fact, much of their business comes from repeat customers, who appreciate the easygoing conversation and natural charm of the sales staff. Some customers come back a few times before deciding to make a purchase, Stanton explains. The showroom, filled with an incredible selection of home furnishings that Stanton describes as “the real McCoy,” is open seven days a week. “We are not your ordinary furniture store. Customers are always coming in and saying the store reminds them of walking into an adventure,” says Stanton. “It’s like taking a whirlwind trip around the world – without the expense.” Far Fetched Imports 245 Route 10 East, East Hanover, NJ (973) 887-4144 www.farfetchedimports.info March 2013

HEALTH & BEAUTY By Julie Jacobs
W
e’ve all experienced the occasional headache, which is easily alleviated by taking an over-the-counter pain medicine. For migraine sufferers, however, there often is no quick relief, just a lengthy and disabling discomfort. Medical researchers are working to change this scenario, and according to the National Headache Foundation, they’re gaining ground. Many new treatments recently have reached the health care marketplace, with more currently in development—from new uses and delivery methods for already FDAapproved drugs to potentially revolutionary medications, procedures and devices.

Managing
MIGRAINES News from the Treatment Front 46
SUBURBAN ESSEX MAGAZINE
March 2013
Traditionally employed to smooth wrinkles, Botox has been found to also help prevent chronic migraine, defined as occurring 15 or more days per month and lasting four hours or longer per episode. Generically known as botulinum toxin type A, Botox is administered for migraine headaches every three months via 31 injections into seven specific sites around the head and neck. Studies have shown that such dosing reduces the number of headache days and dulls associated symptoms. The FDA cautions patients to receive the treatment from qualified medical specialists. Other new uses being investigated include certain anticonvulsants, blood-pressure medications and drugs for Alzheimer’s disease. And alternative delivery methods are in the pipeline—like nasal powders and sprays that allow pain relievers to enter the bloodstream quicker, and transdermal patches that send medication into the body through the skin.
On the Horizon Magnesium for migraine? Research points to promising immediate results when patients experiencing acute migraine were given an intravenous infusion of magnesium. While oral magnesium has not fared as well because it is absorbed too slowly, the drug Migralex, which already is available, contains both magnesium and aspirin to take effect within a half hour.
The Other protocols are examining the effectiveness of Coenzyme Q10, neurostimulator implantation and occipital nerve block. Coenzyme Q10 is a naturally occurring substance that has demonstrated a significant reduction in the frequency of migraines, but investigators still need to determine proper dosages. Neurostimulator implantation seeks to disrupt pain signals via electrical impulses delivered by an implanted device. And occipital nerve block involves injecting anesthetic agents into the occipital nerve, located at the back of the head. Medications presently or soon to be in front of the FDA for approval are the Zelrix patch that dispenses medicine through the skin with the help of a mild electrical current, and a mist inhaler system called Levadex that enables sufferers to ingest medication at the first hint of migraine and feel the benefits fast. As new therapeutic measures reach the marketplace, remember that it’s always best to discuss your symptoms and options with your physician before starting any treatment regimen on your own. ot all “Whole Grain” products are as nutritious as they appear— sometimes products advertised as “whole grain” have high amounts of sugar and trans fat. A recent blog post on WomensHealth.com advised consumers to read the ingredients, not just the packaging label: one rule of thumb is to pass on products that list sugar or trans fat as the second or third ingredients, the blog said. Additionally, consumers should make sure that for every 10 grams of carbs, there is at least one gram of fiber. s

ASK THE EXPERT By Julie Jacobs, photo by Dan Epstein
NAVEEN BALLEM, MD on Surgical Options for Weight Loss
D
r. Naveen Ballem, who heads a top-notch team of bariatric professionals at the New Jersey Center for Advanced Surgical Weight Loss in Glen Ridge, is a leading expert when it comes to weight loss, performing more than 400 weight-loss surgeries annually. With his specialty training at both The Cleveland Clinic and the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Dr. Ballem offers his patients customized, comprehensive bariatric care. Here he sheds light on surgical options to shed pounds.
When should bariatric surgery be considered? Bariatric surgery should be considered when you’ve been very overweight for at least five years and have been unable to lose weight and maintain it after numerous attempts.
Is bariatric surgery safe? Every surgery has risks, such as bleeding, infection, etc. But with today’s bariatric surgery, which is typically performed laparoscopically, the incidence of complications is only about one percent. Also, risk varies according to a patient’s profile—whether or not he or she has underlying health issues, for example.
What makes someone a good candidate? Clinically, a good candidate is a person whose BMI [body mass index] is greater than 30 and he or she is 100 pounds or more overweight. But insurance companies usually require a BMI greater than 35 before they will cover the cost of surgery. Perhaps more important, though, is that a person be motivated and serious about a lifelong commitment to health. Surgery is not a cure for obesity. It’s really a tool to lose weight. People still have to make major lifestyle changes with regard to diet and exercise to maintain weight loss after surgery.
Can you explain the different kinds of bariatric surgeries? Nowadays, most people have either restrictive, which is the band or sleeve, or combined, which is gastric bypass. The band is good, but the sleeve is better. While both reduce the amount of food the stomach can hold, with the sleeve there’s no implantable device, so less chance for infection. In addi-
tion, we take out a portion of the stomach that drives appetite hormones, so hunger is suppressed. With gastric bypass, we make the stomach smaller by creating a gastric pouch and then reroute the small intestine so that food bypasses a significant length of intestine, preventing many fats, sugars and cholesterol from being absorbed.
What can patients expect before, during and after surgery, and when do they see results? Here, we have a whole multidisciplinary team that guides patients through the process. Pre-operatively, they get at least three months of dietary education and are put on a protein-shake diet. They also meet with a psychologist to find positive ways to deal with stressors. The surgery itself takes between one and two hours and requires a 48-hour hospital stay. Post-surgical pain is minimal and the average patient returns to work in less than a week. Post-operatively, patients are placed on a modified diet for several weeks to avoid vomiting. They also are encouraged to attend our regular support groups. Most patients lose 10% of their excess weight in the first month. At one year, those with the band can expect to lose 50%; with the sleeve, 60%; and with bypass, 70%. N.J. DIAMOND MINDS By Barry Farber
BUILDING A CHAMPION An interview with New York Giants quarterback Scott Brunner
A
s quarterback for the University of Delaware Blue Hens, Scott Bruner led his team to a National Championship in 1979. Drafted into the NFL in 1980, he steered the New York Giants to their first playoff berth since 1963. Today he is the EVP/Partner at Net Worth Management, and a private quarterback coach and offensive coordinator of the TEST Football Academy in Martinsville, New Jersey. Scott mentors college players during their transition to the pro ranks; NFL rosters are growing with the names of Scott’s mentees. He tutored former Delaware quarterback Joe Flacco before the 2008 NFL draft, in which he was selected 18th overall by the Baltimore Ravens. BARRY FARBER: Please share your strategy to hone skills and build a quarterback’s overall confidence. SCOTT BRUNNER: I call it “Aim Small, Miss Small.” Zero in on a specific target and aim for the smallest point on that target; if you miss, you don’t miss by much. We used to play a game with the quarterbacks in which the players would stand back 20 yards, try to hit the cross bar on the goal post, and move further back each time. Eventually they’d aim for the intersection of the cross bar, then the upright ten feet up. Finally, we got to the point of hitting the bolts that hold the goal post together. We’d take it one step further and try to skim the ends of the screws from 25 to 45 yards away. BF: So when that QB aims for the finger of the receiver instead of the whole body, if he misses he still might succeed. That strategy could
transfer to many aspects of life—break it down to the smallest component rather than overwhelm yourself with such a big target or goal. BF: How did you prepare Joe Flacco to win the Super Bowl? Barry Farber SB: Our training focuses on three key areas: athleticism, fundamentals, and football IQ. Joe was this tall guy who everybody said was gawky and couldn’t get out of his own way or move well. But when he played he was much more athletic than people gave him credit for, so we had to understand how to utilize his athleticism and debunk the myth that he was not physically athletic enough to play in the pros. We worked a lot on the fundamentals of footwork and ball handling, and combined that with athleticism, which is based upon balance and timing. In the gym we structured a program around agility drills and weight lifting. On the field we focused on specific quarterback moves; we tried to replicate every situation Joe would encounter on a regular basis in the NFL and choreographed his physical responses to them. BF: Making it as realistic as possible? SB: Right. We trained him to react to those various situations automatically, without thinking about it. This allowed him to clear his mind and survey the field to make good decisions. If he were concentrating on his moves he’d never be able to think about where the ball was or where the receivers were down field. I am most proud of the way he played and responded in the Super Bowl and throughout his five-year career. (To be continued in the next issue.)
Barry Farber consults with corporations, professional athletes and entertainers helping them market their products and land more deals. He’s the best-selling author of 12 books translated into 25 foreign languages with over one million copies sold. BON APPÉTIT By Janet Curran Perlman, Photos by Dan Epstein
Revisiting a Popular Chef at Gennaro’s Cucina
H
ere’s a first for me: a restaurant named by its owners after their chef. But when I learned that the chef in question is Gennaro Romeo, über-popular chef of the former Italianissimo restaurant, owners Bonnie and Tom Graziano’s decision made perfect sense. The trio’s story is a perfect example of what might be called “kismet.” The Grazianos were considering opening an Italian restaurant in North Jersey, when a mutual friend urged them to consider Gennaro Romeo as their chef. “He was relentless,” Bonnie recalls, laughing. And then, remarkably, fate stepped in when they learned that the former Italianissimo location itself in West Caldwell had opened up. Voila! Now introducing the new Gennaro’s Cucina, a warm and cheerful restaurant that offers “Old World Italian Cuisine.” Gennaro Romeo has come home. The main dining area, totally redesigned by Bonnie Graziano, is rustic Italian, with a relaxing outdoor courtyard feel and separated from the more casual side by arched windows. Its eclectic menu ranges from soups and salads to gourmet pizzas, wraps and calzones and from specialty pastas and seafoods to popular meat dishes—Gennaro’s kitchen serves them all.

Stuffed Mushrooms, three for $7.95, beautifully plated, were finished with a shallot remoulade and a light balsamic vinegar and truffle oil drizzle—a very impressive beginning. The menu description for the $5.45 Escarole and bean soup, says it all: “a hearty, flavorful soup…with a little kick.” And perfect as an antidote to blustery March weather. Caprino salad, $9.95, almost a meal by itself, featured arugula, dried cranberries and slivered almonds mixed in a light savory dressing and topped with goat cheese. It’s hard to turn down the pizza here, and the house signature “Grandma’s Pizza,” $16.95, is a square pie with a brick oven texture, dotted with chunks of San Marzano tomatoes. We heartily agreed when a nearby diner queried, “Isn’t it tasty?” Romeo explains that his Gennaro’s Legendary Meatballs, three for $6.45, come from a recipe handed down through generations of his family. They’re large, light, lucscious…and definitely legendary. Already a customer favorite, the creamy Risotto Scampi carries just a hint of citrus and is priced at a reasonable $17.95. Another recommended entrée is the $16.95 Chicken Balsamico, scallopini of chicken breast in a piquant garlic and rosemaryinfused balsamic sauce, which, though dark and rich, never overpowers the tasty chicken. Our choices from the $5.95 desserts were the excellent tiramisu and a crispy pastry shell with mixed berries layered over Chantilly cream. Needless to say, Gennaro Romeo is delighted to be back in his old space; the Grazianos are delighted to have him; and area diners will be delighted to sample his delightful fare once more.

“Hi Dr. Sean, it’s Sandra checking in. I ended the hCG diet down 22 lbs and have continued to go down another 4 lbs using the HURRY formula IN – CONTEST ENDS MAY 14TH post-diet you suggested. My daughter Nancy is down 39 lbs total, which is an additional 8 lbs since our last day of the hCG diet. We’d love to come back in and get measured and ‘talk’ with you about doing it again to hit our goal. YOU DID IT! YOU RESET IT! IT WORKS!”
