20th Annual Golf Invitational

Anthony Calandra Receives Gold Plate Award

he Clara Maas Medical Center Foundation announced that its 20th annual Golf Invitational will take place on May 19, 2014. The golf outing attracts not only donors, but also local celebrities such as Yogi Berra and Rick Cerrone of the New York Yankees, John MacLean of the New Jersey Devils, and “Cake Boss” Buddy Valastro.

n December 2, 2013 the New Jersey Restaurant Association (NJRA) hosted its Annual Gold Plate & Restaurateur of the Year Gala at Mayfair Farms in West Orange, NJ. Anthony Calandra of The Calandra’s Mediterranean Grill in Fairﬁeld was one of the recipients of the 2013 Gold Plate award. This award recognizes current outstanding service and achievement in the food service industry. Calandra’s Mediterranean Grill is a family friendly restaurant featuring an open kitchen with an open wood burning grill and pizza deck oven.

This year’s Golf Invitation begins with registration and a brunch at 10am. The venue for this event is the thirteenth oldest golf club in the country, the Montclair Golf Club, located in West Orange. The shotgun start is at 12:30pm. After a wonderful 18 holes, guests will enjoy a cocktail hour, awards dinner and silent auction. The Clara Maas Medical Center Foundation is a charitable organization dedicated to generating philanthropic support for the facilities, programs and services of Clara Maass Medical Center, serving Essex, Hudson and Bergen Counties. How They Can Help, How They Work

ach year, thousands of Americans volunteer for clinical trials. Not only can they personally benefit from such participation, but they can also play a critical role in helping others by contributing to the development of potentially life-enhancing or lifesaving treatments.

What is a Clinical Trial? Clinical trials typically examine new ways to detect, diagnose or treat disease and whether they are safe and effective for patients. Such studies may look at a new drug, device or technique that can potentially prevent, delay, improve or even cure an illness or condition. In some cases, clinical trials compare interventions or evaluate other uses for existing modalities or the effects of combining therapies.

PARTICIPATE? If you’re considering participating in a clinical trial, speak with your physician and make sure you have the necessary information to make an informed decision. Among the questions you should ask are: • What is being studied? • What treatments will I receive, and are there possible risks and side effects? • Will tests and procedures be involved? • What will be expected of me as a participant?

• Where is the trial taking place and will I have to be hospitalized? • How long will the study take? • Who is conducting the trial and what is their experience? • How will my safety be ensured?

The aim of all clinical trials is to discover methods that improve patients’ lives and, in fact, most medical advancements have been made through clinical trials. People who choose to take part have the opportunity to receive novel and cutting-edge treatment approaches that would otherwise not be available to them; and they do so often at no cost, while benefiting from more regular care and follow-up as well as such additional support services as counseling and nutrition. Many trial participants become involved through referrals from their physicians, but some learn about and seek out investigations on their own. Researchers conduct clinical trials according to a protocol (or research plan) that has been approved and monitored by an institutional review board made up of health professionals and lay individuals affiliated with the study site. This “map” includes the reason for and length of the study, the number of participants and eligibility criteria, when and how medications, tests and procedures will be administered, as well as the data that will be collected.

Eligibility, Informed Consent & Enrollment A critical part of the clinical trial process is determining eligibility, whereby criteria are set to ensure that only participants best suited for a particular study are enrolled and that they will be safe throughout the duration of the trial. Criteria are usually based on factors such as gender, age and medical and treatment history, and may exclude people who are living with other pre-existing medical conditions, are on certain medications, or are in particular stages of an illness. Once eligibility is established, patients must give their informed consent. This requires that they sign legal documents indicat-

ing they have been given a detailed explanation of the study, fully understand any potential risks and benefits, and know what is expected of them as a participant. In cases where a patient is cognitively impaired, a family member or friend can help make decisions and ensure that study parameters are followed. It is important to note that enrollment in a study is kept confidential and that participants can choose to withdraw at any time.

Study Structure & Funding

Phase III compares the study drug or treatment with the standard drug or treatment. When a trial continues to demonstrate a drug or treatment’s benefit, researchers may seek FDA approval to move into Phase IV to examine long-term safety and effectiveness, with the ultimate aim of bringing the drug or treatment to the public. Most trials that enter advanced phases are randomized, doubleblind investigations. In these studies, patients are selected randomly to receive either the treatment being evaluated (as part of the treatment group) or the standard treatment or a placebo (as part of the control group). Placebos do not contain any active ingredients and thus do not have any real effect. To ensure impartial results, neither the participants nor the researchers are told who is assigned to which group.

Getting Beneath the Surface of Face Lifts & Fillers

osmetic surgery and procedures have been on the rise and are no longer limited to the rich and famous, especially treatments such as fillers, which are much more accessible to the average person than in years past. Since injections or operations may seem intimidating to many people who want to appear years younger, Dr. Janet Neigel of the Neigel Center for Cosmetic and Laser Surgery in West Orange works hard to ensure a pleasant experience and quick recovery for her patients.

Q: Within the scope of your practice, what do you specialize in? A: I am a board-certified ophthalmologist; therefore I do a

lot of reconstructive work on the eyelids, tear ducts and sockets. I also do cosmetic treatments and surgery and I train other doctors how to use Botox and fillers.

Q: In your experience, what do you find are the top concerns of prospective patients? A: Typically patients are concerned with puffy or tired

looking eyes along with loss of volume in the face. Their biggest concern is down time therefore we focus on their main concerns address those first and create a cosmetic treatment plan for them to proceed according to their lifestyle.

Q: What changes have you seen in the field of cosmetic surgery? A: Facelifts are a little different than they were 20 years

ago when everything was pulled back. Now we look at the face in three dimensions. In places where the fat, bone and volume diminish or where the face is caving in, we reinflate the face and get the cheek apple back by contouring with dermal fillers.

Q: Where do you perform your surgical procedures? A: I have a private operating room with the nicest nurses on

staff. Between the OR and the office, I have about a dozen employees, and we want patients to feel like they have received the best service they have ever had.

Q: Do you have a lot of patients who are interested in nonsurgical procedures as well? A: Yes. We do a lot of fillers, lasers and Botox treatments, as well

as “lunchtime treatments” where you come in, have it done and go back to work and no one knows you had anything done. Fillers are instant gratification. We can put them in and you can see instantly how you look. Most fillers last six months to one year, but there are new products that can last up to two years.

Q: Do patients have to repeat surgical procedures? A: Not if they are done right the first time. Sometimes, patients

will come back after a couple of years not liking the way their upper lids are looking, but it’s really a brow lift that they will end up needing at that point.

A Welcome Newcomer Joins the Bloomﬁeld Dining Scene

topped with a delicate quail egg. We also enjoyed a hearty, grown-up Mac N Cheese ﬂecked with short rib meat, available as an $11 appetizer or a $7 side.

Although it was Dennis Lukic’s granddaughter who came up with the name, in a touch of serendipity, a liqueur that carries that name has roots in the former country of Yugoslavia—as does the Lukic family.

Lukic continued on a roll with his entrees. The $25 fall-off-the-bone Short Ribs, served with mashed sweet potatoes and roasted Brussels sprouts, have proved to be a crowd pleaser, as have the $31 signature Lobster Bolognese, smoked lobster served on twists of house-made spaghettini with ricotta salata (ricotta cheese that has been pressed, salted and dried) shaved over the dish.

pen since August and owned by Chef Chris Lukic and his father, Dennis, The Yellow Plum is a classy gem. Its modern looks feature cream walls, dark wood framing, and specially commissioned, brightly bold modern art. The main dining area is bracketed by a private dining room and a quiet bar area.

Chef Lukic, a graduate of the French Culinary Institute, has most recently worked with celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck, as well as stints with other notable names, and his creative flair became immediately apparent— courtesy of the appetizers. Even though winter reigned outdoors, the $10 Watermelon Salad brought a tantalizing touch of spring to the table. Here, sweet watermelon cubes met briny Kalamata olives with a hint of cilantro and bits of feta cheese to finish. Two fat and meaty prawns, $14, brought New Orleans to the table. Slightly blackened, cooked with a spicy sweet sauce and served with chive mayonnaise, the prawns were spectacularly good. A popular appetizer from the 70s returned with the $12 Steak Tartare. Only the freshest prime beef is finely ground, then mixed with a tarragon-pepper aioli and

The outstanding Sea Bass, $30, was served with spinach and cribiche, a mayonnaise-style sauce made with egg yolks— typical of Lukic’s sophisticated touches. A first for me, accompanying the sea bass was the intriguingly described “fried-poached” egg—actually a perfectly poached egg peeled and rolled in crispy panko crumbs. If you’re inclined to order one of the $7 sides to complement your entree, I strongly recommend the five-star addictive Ancho Fries, without a doubt the best fries I’ve sampled. Even after a full dinner, Yellow Plum’s desserts were irresistible. The mousse-like Chocolate Pot de Crème, $9, was smoothly dark and rich, while the famous $9 Fried Brownies, served with peanut butter ice cream, were more like chocolate zeppoles, scoring high in the “Wow” factor. Dessert cocktails and after dinner ports are available, and the restaurant carries a nice selection of wines and craft beers. A prix fixe dinner is available Monday-Thursday from 5-7pm for $35.

Most of us know that you’re supposed to eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. For those who need to supplement their daily fruit and vegetable intake, juice bars can be a healthy destination. Lie on your back with your knees bent, feet on the floor. Support your head with a pillow or blanket if necessary. Place one hand on your belly and one hand on your ribcage. Hug yourself and lean from side to side to release tension in the muscles and fascia. Inhale, swelling your belly and ribs. Exhale attempting to flatten the balls with your breath and body weight. 3. Place the balls along your spine starting below the neck, where the bottom of a shirt collar would fall. Repeat the hug and lean motion and the inhale/exhale pattern to make the balls travel down inch by inch toward the bra strap/ heart rate monitor strap level. Keep it up until you’re able to have less tension in the neck and shoulders when you breathe.

PRESCHOOL Preparing for the Future By Deborah Schapiro

f you are the parent of an infant or toddler, you may not be thinking about school yet. Research has shown, however, that preschool is vitally important for a child’s future intellectual and social development. With this in mind, Suburban Essex spoke to local preschool directors to learn more about what preschools are offering children. According to Arlene Sherman, director of Shoresh, the preschool at Temple Ner Tamid in Bloomfield, “Preschool is very important for teaching children social and emotional skills such as sharing, empathy, and independence (on their level, of course). Without these skills, the children will have a much more difficult time in kindergarten.” Sherman notes that as kindergarten has become more demanding, the nature of preschool has correspondingly changed: “Kindergarten used to be all about milk and cookies; now kids are expected to enter almost knowing how to read. The trick is to prepare preschoolers for this while still making learning fun. A tremendous amount of learning can take place while they are singing, dancing and playing house.” Kiddie Academy in West Caldwell, opening at the end of March, will offer a well-developed, well-thought-out philosophy and curriculum. The school’s Life Essentials is based on a four pillars approach: developmentally appropriate curriculum, character education, technology and health and fitness. As franchise owner Jill Jones notes, “Education is very important here, but we want the children to have fun and most importantly to learn and grow socially, physically, emotionally and intellectually.

To ensure that the children feel at home, Kiddie Academy will offer hot meals, drinks and snacks served family style throughout the day. Jones raves about the “amazingly beautiful” physical space, “We have a wonderful outdoor playground with different sections for different age groups as well as an indoor gym for bad weather, with bikes, a basketball net and even a climbing wall.” The use of technology will be very apparent at Kiddie Academy for both educational and security purposes. “We will have numerous security cameras throughout the building, and the older students will have a SMARTboard and a computer in their classrooms and the parents will be provided webcams with safe and secure login,” said Jones. Character education is not new at Trinity Academy in Roseland. According to preschool director Sister Suzanne Janis, “We teach Catholic values on a developmentally appropriate level. We enable our students to make moral, knowledgeable, intelligent decisions, and we want them to treat each other with respect and dignity. I like to sum it up by saying that we pray, we play, we learn, and we have fun here.”

To foster this moral learning, religion is taught along with music, art, science, math, language arts and Spanish. Other fun activities include a chick-hatching project as well as a magic show and a visit from a petting zoo. The values taught at Trinity may be timeless, but the schedule there has changed with the times. Like many preschool programs, it now offers extended hours. Gina Mariani-Chimento, director of the soon to be opened Rainbow Academy in West Caldwell, echoes these sentiments: “Preschool is so important for so many reasons. It helps children with socialization and prepares them for a lifetime of learning.” “Rainbow Academy graduates begin kindergarten with not only an academic advantage, but they also gain social, emotional and cognitive advantages.

Children are instilled with a desire to learn rather than pressure to learn. Children are engaged and learn through play and exploration” states Mariani-Chimento. Like other preschools, they use technology for both educational and security. Mariani-Chimento states, “We will have SMARTboards in our classrooms and use an electronic communication system we call ‘Tadpoles’ to communicate with parents throughout the day. Technology even plays a role in school security; parents will use a biometric finger scanner that allows them into the building, and Parentview Internet Monitoring, where they can watch their children in real time.” Even with all the changes in preschool over the past few years, one thing has remained the same: There are many excellent ones within the greater Essex County area for parents to choose from. s
