Inside ESSEX New Year, New Name— Montclair History Center
Celebrating One Year of Healing
he Montclair Historical Society started off the New Year with some big changes by debuting a new name and logo to better reflect who they are today—Montclair History Center. Their mission to preserve, educate, and share continues on in a place where the rich history of Montclair and northern NJ are shared through personal and hands-on experiences.
r. Bonnie Barnhart and SPA Chiropractic is celebrating their one year anniversary of providing chiropractic care to Essex county residents. From massage therapy to spinal scans and more, SPA Chiropractic has spent its first year treating and healing patients, including children, pregnant women, and the elderly.
T
Founded over fifty years ago as the Montclair Historical Society, its goal was to save the Israel Crane House. The center has expanded over time and now stewards the Crane House and Historic YWCA, the Nathaniel Crane House, the Clark House, and the Shultz House. Along with these four historic houses, a micro-farm, learning center, library, and archives fulfill the center’s mission. The name change better reflects that mission and what the center has become in the fifty years since its founding—a history center. See how the Montclair History Center has grown over the years and into its new name at www.montclairhistory.org.

On the heals of the one year anniversary, SPA Chiropractic has made some changes to allow for an even better workspace. While its location has stayed the same, the inside of the office has expanded, adding a new table for flexion/distraction along with display cabinets that show off their new line of Arbonne products. Essential oils used for treatments and aromatherapy massages now line a wall so patients can see all that they offer. And the office isn’t the only change, Dr. Barnhart is now a second level Reiki practitioner and a birth/labor and postpartum doula. Spa Chiropractic will be hosting events or anniversary celebrations. learn more by visiting: www.facebook.com/ SpaChiropractic.

Calling All Vendors
By Katrina Musto
S
earching for flavorful dishes to order at a restaurant when you have food allergies can be tough. Robert Beatty knows all too well how difficult and frustrating this can be and it became a key factor in his decision to open his own restaurant in May 2016. Roberts Scratch Kitchen was created to help those in similar situations like his wife and daughters. “They have celiac disease and other food allergies, and it’s important for people with allergies to have a safe place to eat without cross-contamination,” he explained.

he North Jersey Woman Spring Event to be held on Monday, May 8,2017 at Mayfair Farms in West Orange is now accepting vendor and sponsor reservations. The Early Bird Keeps the Lights On Supreme Energy Now Booking Spring Generator Inspections By Janis Hashe
M
arch winds; April showers around the corner—winter may be over, but, along with balmier temperatures, Spring brings lots of opportunities for power outages (and hurricane season won’t be far behind). “This is the time to get your generator serviced,” says Dominic Valli, Marketing & HVAC Equipment Sales Manager for Supreme Energy, “not when the electricity goes out.” Generators that have been out in the elements all winter accumulate dirt and debris that can gum up the works, Valli explained. Additionally, generators that have not been serviced regularly can have parts that seize, spark plugs and wires that can fail, and leaks that may pop up. But in just an hour or two, Supreme Energy’s certified technicians can get your generator in tip-top shape for the coming year. They’ll change the oil, air filters, and spark plugs; lubricate parts; and check for trouble spots in the electrical and mechanical systems. If you’ve been on the fence about buying a generator, or if you’re current one is aging, now’s a good time to think about getting a
new one, Valli noted. “We’ve got rebates available and some really excellent pricing on our top-quality Generac units.”

New Freon Rules Impact Central AC Units A generator is not the only piece of equipment that needs annual maintenance at your home. If your AC condenser fails or cannot be repaired, replacing it in accordance with federal regulations phasing out R22 Freon is likely to be a longer, more complex process than in the past. Valli advises getting your system tuned up now, rather than waiting for something to go wrong during the hot weather this summer. Supreme Energy, rated A+ by the better business bureau, has been maintaining, repairing and installing central air conditioners for decades and can guide you through the process. Academic PROFILE
Mount Saint Dominic on Finding Their Voice… By Christine S. Maxwell, photos by Dan Epstein
Sr. Frances Sullivan, OP with students
M
ount Saint Dominic Academy (MSDA) is a small Catholic all-girls school in Caldwell whose purpose is to educate, empower, and prepare young women for leadership roles in the 21st century. Now celebrating its 125th year, MSDA emphasizes the Four Pillars of Dominican Life: study, prayer, community, and mission. The school is a college-preparatory day school for girls in grades 9 through 12. Approximately 325 girls from diverse backgrounds attend MSDA. Pauline Condon, director of admissions, believes that an all-girl atmosphere helps young women achieve and fulfill their highest potential. “They get to know one another in a supportive way. This atmosphere lets the girls know that success and accomplishments are very desirable. The girls quickly become leaders in the school,” she states. MSDA, accredited by the Middle States Association, offers a rigorous program of study. Students choose courses in English, science, math, social studies, and world languages. Most students take at least one of the 25 honors and Advanced Placement courses. In addition, all students take classes in technology and are proficient in basic software programs. Prayer is at the heart of the MSDA education. The school community prays together during the day and at regular and special liturgies. Everyone takes a religion course each year.
Besides a rigorous academic program, students participate in competitive and community extracurricular activities. Track, field hockey, soccer, tennis, softball, cheerleading, basketball, golf and lacrosse are popular. Students find creative expression in clubs for art, dance, theatre, music, and public speaking. MSDA also requires students to complete mission work. Through its Siena Community Program, students have many opportunities to serve within the community. For example, they make blankets for babies in Harlem and prepare sandwiches for soup kitchens. The students also work with the elderly in nearby senior housing. Service hours increase as students advance in their studies and culminate with individual written reflections on the necessity of lifelong service to others. A MSDA education provides young women with the foundation to lead responsible, successful and meaningful lives. Remarks Condon, “MSDA is a great place for young women to find their voice.”

Y TIPS for
ou may have noticed you’re more prone to colds and upset stomach when you’re stressed. Stress tends to slow the digestive process. What’s more, 70 percent of the immune system lies in the digestive system, according to findings reported in “Clinical & Experimental Immunology.”
GOOD
GUT HEALTH
Unfortunately, stress is sometimes unavoidable. To help, Vincent Pedre, MD, author of the new book, “Happy Gut: The Cleansing Program to Help You Lose Weight, Gain Energy, and Eliminate Pain,” is offering useful tips to lessen digestive upset and keep your gut healthy.
• Pack healthful snacks
When traveling, people tend to grab unhealthy foods for convenience. Pack nutritious foods like carrots, apples, almonds and frozen yogurt to keep the body strong. Foods like yogurt, which contain probiotics, not only address digestive issues, but are said to help stave off colds. One study found that those who took a probiotic supplement with Lactobacillus rhamnosus, a type of healthy probiotic bacteria, recovered earlier and reported less severe symptoms.
• Eat mindfully
Eating in a hurry is a major no-no for good gut health, and makes you more likely to overeat, since it takes the brain about 20 minutes to recognize when you’re full. Plus, eating quickly can cause gas, acid indigestion and bloating. “When we stop and really enjoy what we’re eating we’re less likely to overdo it, and we’ll avoid issues like emotional eating,” says Dr. Pedre.
• Relieve stress Take some “me time.” Maintaining an exercise routine and practicing deep breathing relaxation techniques can do wonders for mental and digestive health, and help alleviate stress’ negative effects on the digestive system, such as gas, acid reflux and stomach cramps.

• Maintain a sleep routine Get an adequate night’s rest of at least eight hours nightly. Your body and gut like predictability. Plus, staying up late could make you more likely to visit the fridge and eat that piece of chocolate cake that’ll lead to an upset stomach. • Help your body naturally Overeating or drinking is easy to do, but it can cause stomach distress. Check out local natural product retailers, which offer homoeopathic medicines like Nux vomica to relieve nausea, heartburn, acid indigestion or fullness associated with overindulgence of food or drink. While these uses have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration for efficacy, Nux vomica is one of the most popular homeopathic medicines. It’s also easy to take. The pellets are quickly absorbed under the tongue without water, as opposed to being absorbed through the stomach, which may not be functioning at its peak. As a homeopathic medicine, it has no known side effects such as constipation, diarrhea, gas or drowsiness.
To learn about relieving a variety of acute stomach issues, explore the Boiron Medicine Finder app. This free resource, available on Android and iOS devices, allows users to find the right homeopathic medicine for many everyday conditions. Both stress and fun can take a toll on gut health—take steps to feel your best.

Diamond MINDS LIKE THIS! An interview with Soleio Cuervo
Y
ou might “like” this month’s interview—a great message on learning, attitude and a passion for solving problems from product designer Soleio Cuervo who is credited for creating the like button on Facebook. Cuervo is now at Dropbox. Barry Farber: In 2005 you were part of the first 30 employees at Facebook. Tell me about your beginnings and how you got started. Soleio Cuervo: I grew up in Piscataway NJ and I’m the oldest of three children. My parents were both Colombian immigrants and came to the US before I was born. We were a low-income family and my father was the sole income earner. My mother was adamant that we were highly engaged in extracurricular activities like soccer or violin. We spent a ton of time at the library. It was there that she saw a flyer for the NJ SEEDS organization. They put me on a very different life trajectory and the most influential program in my life for me and the rest of my family. They equipped me with a financial and academic ability to attend a prestigious school like Duke. BF: What is the key to your success and any advice for people looking to get into your field?
SC: You’re probably not going to get it right on the first try and you’re probably not going to get it right on the second try. But it’s through learning and rapid integration that you can arrive at novel solutions. Develop an appetite for building. Today, more than ever before, there are unlimited resources available online for people to get started with programing. It’s not just getting excited about programming, it’s getting excited about solving problems and using technology to solve them. There are very few barriers for people who participate in that process. People need to start with a passion for solving problems instead of looking for a career at a technology company. There’s no playbook for being at Google or Facebook. They are in the business of identifying problems people have and solving them.
Reach out to your peers. It’s Ok to Barry Farber ask for help. Even Einstein required sounding boards for him to arrive at some of his greatest influential accomplishments. Every individual who faces adversity is best equipped to overcome it through actively calling for help and actively assembling people around them. These can be mentors or peers that complement their skill set.
BF: What do you do when you’re faced with adversity and what are some key lessons for people to understand about mentors and surrounding yourself with success?
BF: Why?
SC: It’s commonly thought that adversity is a personal matter. Only you can overcome adversity. But when you look at how adversity is overcome in the world, in general, it’s by groups of people. The key skill that I don’t think we teach younger students or even adults is to look for help and support from others for overcoming great adversity.
BF: How about attitude? How do you deal with positive and negative energy in the workplace? How do you develop a resilient attitude that allows you to stay focused and positive during difficult and adverse situations? SC: That’s a good question. I’ve always had an optimistic outlook. SC: A friend of mine a few years ago said it best. “You kind of get what you expect.” If you expect the best from the people around you, you generally get the best out of them. It’s OK to be skeptical or be critical of people’s work and behavior in order to get the best out of them, but I think that if you expect the best from them you’re more likely to get the best out of them.
