THE SUPERB WOMAN Helps Women Gain Confidence
Connor’s Saucery: Hot Sauce with a Mission
anet Neal is a woman who believes in the power of women helping other women. That is the mission of the long-time New Jersey resident’s new book, THE SUPERB WOMAN: It’s All About the BE, which examines ways women can gain strength and confidence, and feel comfortable in their own skin.
ince he was a toddler, Connor Barshay of Verona has been consuming spicy and exotic foods. Now ten-years-old, his love for hot sauce and his passion for foods with intense flavor has led to his very own business— Connor’s Saucery.

Janet Neal
THE SUPERB WOMAN tells the story of a single working mother, Bea, who goes on a quest to find out how a media icon “does it all.” Her answers come from the lessons learned from women she encounters along the way, shedding light on issues such as “having it all,” getting to know oneself, cultivating forgiveness and gratitude, and letting go of the “shoulds.”
Neal’s book offers readers strategies and mindsets to help women reenergize their power and release the need to be a “superwoman.” Her thoughtful examination of issues affecting women’s self-esteem and personal authority is sure to enhance the lives of women of all ages. Janet Neal is a contributor to The Huffington Post, Mogul, and hosts her own weekly web show entitled “Superbwoman Sundays at 7.”

Along with providing customers with tasty sauces, Connor’s Saucery has a special mission—they intend to donate 10% of all profits to Muscular Dystrophy research and other projects that benefit children with the disorder. This cause is so dear to the Barshay family as Connor himself has muscular dystrophy. The disorder, which limits his physical activity, in no way defines him. The idea to create a small-batch hot sauce business first hatched in late 2017, and has been on a roll ever since. The independent business will feature a rotating selection of unique sauces, with ingredient such as Jalapeno, Habanero and Ghost peppers. This spring, the sauces will be sold at various farmer’s markets, street fairs, and festivals; and are now available on their own online shop. Visit www.connorssaucery.com to buy online!

March 2018
T
his is the story of how a child of a Canadian father and a mom from The Bronx came to the US armed with what he calls “Canadian Socialism and New York Chutzpah,” and is resurrecting New Jersey’s first industry. Charles Rosen, man of many hats, has founded a successful ad agency, worked in politics, and started a nonprofit whose mission was to help fund women filmmakers in developing nations. However, this social justice warrior isn’t satisfied with his personal successes: he wants everyone to succeed. And he believes that the way to make that happen in America is through private enterprise. His mission became to create a business that could (1) treat people with dignity and pay them a living wage, (2) help repair damage to the Earth, (3) repair the local economy, and (4) make money. Enter the cider. Rosen, now a Montclair resident, learned that not only was hard cider New Jersey’s first industry, but that his adopted home county of Essex was its locus before the American Revolution. Newark cider was considered the champagne of ciders, enjoyed by both George Washington and King George III. The very best was made from Harrison Apples, a strain grown by Samuel Harrison of South Orange. However, in 1978 there was only one known living Harrison Apple tree. Fortunately, from that one tree found in Livingston many more were created. Rosen fell in love with the metaphor of farming as social justice. Healthy dirt needs diverse organisms, and as each organism gets stronger in the dirt, they all get stronger. So too, with the people in our communities. He believes there’s a parallel to the invisible organisms in the soil, and the “invisible” members of our communities. He formed a company called New Ark Farms, and a brand called Ironbound Cider. The workforce is staffed by chronically underemployed folks from Newark. Immigrants, vets, and ex-offenders all find not only the dignity of a living wage and the opportunity to learn a trade, but the required weekly classes Rosen has created working with Columbia University covering a curriculum which includes: conflict resolution, identity values, emotional intelligence, fiscal literacy, and family re-orientation. This team creates a cider that is made from locally farmed and pressed apples and unlike competitors (who use foreign concentrates), Ironbound Cider has no added sugar, no preservatives or sulfites, and is gluten free. In fact, the New Ark Farms orchard in Asbury, New Jersey, which is home to 10 thousand trees, will by this coming year harvest apples from 4 thousand Harrison apple trees. Try one of the locally available varieties of Ironbound Cider. You can think of it as a kind of local history lesson, and you can be part of Charles Rosen’s effort to repair the world…one can of hard cider at a time.

Every Party is Perfect at Brooklake Country Club Extraordinary Events Happen Here By Jessica Schiffenhaus
N
estled in a beautiful section of Florham Park, Brooklake Country Club is one of New Jersey’s premiere event and wedding venues—and not just for members. The private club is open to nonmembers for catered events, such as weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs, proms, banquets, and corporate events. Planning an event with Brooklake Country Club couldn’t be easier. Peter Mitsaelides, Director of Catering, and his team will see to it that each event is executed flawlessly. One of the first things prospective clients should know is that Brooklake only hosts one event at a time—so guests are given the club’s undivided attention. There is also an in-house party planner available to answer questions and help with all of the details, every step of the way. The club has several areas for ceremonies and cocktail receptions. Indoors, among the stunning rooms is the 3,000-square-foot ballroom, which is complete with floorto-ceiling windows overlooking the picturesque golf course. And outdoors, events can take place by the lake or on the beautiful terrace overlooking the grounds. Crafted by the club’s award-winning chefs, the dining options, which include continental and northern Italian cuisine (custom and Kosher menus are available) are second to none. Guests are greeted with a mouth-watering array of hors d’oeuvres, treated to a true culinary experience at dinner, and sent off with a dessert display destined to satisfy any sweet tooth. The entire staff at Brooklake Country Club is dedicated to making their guests’ events unforgettable. “Our goal is for everyone to relax and have the time of their lives,” said Mitsaelides. “Leave it up to us to make your event flawless.”

hether you need catering for a wedding, corporate event or another special occasion–the American B-B-Q Company, in Denville, makes catering delicious, simple, fun and easy. Since 1996, this full service, year ‘round caterer has been serving up a myriad of menus for all occasions. The full-service caterer offers a variety of themed packages including the Texas, Southern, Latin—American, and Hawaiian BBQs, Pig Roasts, Clam Bakes, Oktoberfest, St. Patrick’s Day and other special event menus. “The most memorable events we have done are the weddings,” said owner Kevin Smith. “To be a part of a couple’s special day is very satisfying.” He added, “We have customers for whom we catered their wedding years ago and family milestones like their kids’ birthdays, high school and college graduations. I get a great kick when a customer says we catered their sweet sixteen or graduation. To see customers come back, time and again, and refer us to their friends, shows we are doing it right. We take great pride in that.”

T
he Manor’s all-new Garden Room takes full advantage of its sunlit rooftop exposure, with a vantage-point overlooking The Manor’s grand waterfall and views of Eagle Rock Reservation beyond. The room’s design creates a light, open and more pastoralfeeling space. Lined on two sides with glass-paneled doors that open to a wrap-around outdoor terrace, the room is bathed with light in the daytime and shows off the glow of The Manor’s accent lighting on its grounds in the evenings. With details reminiscent of an English conservatory, the Garden Room brings a fresh and unique option for guests looking for a distinctive event space; one that is more inviting and a refreshing change from other more typical cookie-cutter “banquet halls”. This aesthetic is fluidly integrated with modern amenities including a large-scale video display screen and Bluetooth®-enabled audio. Customizable LED lighting in the ceiling coves, programmable to any color, create a room environment that matches your color scheme or sets the perfect ambiance, and save the additional expense of renting up lighting. Give a multimedia presentation, play a video, or roll a photo slideshow for your guests on our 75” smart display. When not in use, this display adds to the room’s elegance, disappearing behind an ornately-framed mirror. The many unique, authentic design details will create a lasting impression with your guests.
The dedicated Garden Room Bridal Suite offers a cozy private sanctuary to escape and prepare for the events of the day. With a private restroom, easy elevator access and located directly adjacent to the event space, the Garden Room Bridal Suite provides for all of the newlywed’s needs. With ample lighting and multiple mirrors, the inviting suite will help ensure that brides look their best. Combined with a wedding in The Manor’s lovely formal gardens and a reception in its light and airy new Garden Room, the elegant bridal suite will help make a bride’s day feel special, from beginning to end.

When your kids are going to swim lessons every day, it’s a lot easier to have what they’re learning become a part of their life. It’s kind of life reading– when they’re doing it every day, they’re continually building upon what they’ve learned the day before. And it’s more likely to stick.

BOOMERS: 10 Reasons to Go Nuts
F
or the roughly 75 million Americans who make up the baby boom generation, a healthy diet and lifestyle are the best weapons against age-related diseases.
“It’s vital at any age to adopt good habits to live a strong, fit and healthy life,” says Dr. Mike Roussell, a nationally recognized nutrition consultant and nutrition adviser to Men’s Health and Shape. “Fueling your life with tasty and nutrient-rich foods while making sure to be active every single day are essential components to keeping your body young and vibrant.” Roussell’s recommendation? Nuts. In particular, pistachios. “Pistachios are a multitasking nut with fiber, healthy fats, and three specific types of antioxidants that may help fight the onset of age-related conditions that lead to poor health in these 10 ways.”
5. Blood glucose level Developing adult onset diabetes, or Type 2 diabetes, is a common fear for boomers. The American Diabetes Association praises the health benefits of nuts, including pistachios, calling them a diabetes superfood because they improve how the body’s cells use glucose and how insulin responds to a carbohydratecontaining meal, namely, stabilizing blood glucose levels.
6. Skin health and appearance UV light from the sun promotes damage and accelerates the aging of our skin. Pistachios contain two carotenoid antioxidants that are concentrated in the skin and work to filter out and protect it against the damaging effects of UV light.
7. Eyesight
1. Heart health
Pistachios contain lutein, a nutrient known to help improve eye health, especially in older individuals. Lutein has been shown to prevent and slow down macular degeneration by providing more pigment for the eye, thereby reflecting more of the sun’s light, preventing damage to the retina.
Large population studies show that people who regularly eat nuts, such as pistachios, have a lower risk of dying from heart disease or suffering a heart attack. Pistachios provide 360-degree cardiovascular support in that they can promote improvements in cholesterol levels, blood pressure and blood vessel function.
8. Memory
Excessive inflammation is one of the root causes of age-related conditions, such as arthritis. Pistachios contain a special form of vitamin E called gamma tocopherol, which has unique anti-inflammatory properties. Gamma tocopherol levels have also been shown to decrease as we age.
Preliminary research shows that the fatty acids and antioxidants found in pistachios can help support brain health. The antioxidants in pistachios can help ward off excessive inflammation in the brain, a major cause of accelerated cognitive decline. Another study found that eating pistachios stimulated brain waves that aid the formation of ideas and memory processing.
3. Weight loss
9. Sleep
2. Anti-inflammatory
Being overweight can also contribute to a number of age-related illnesses. Studies show pistachios positively promote weight maintenance as the dietary fiber, fat and protein all work together to make us feel fuller and satiated longer, plus removing them from the shell slows down eating. Pistachios are also the lowest-fat nut.
4. Digestion The fiber in pistachios also can help with digestion. Research shows that the fiber in pistachios works as a prebiotic and feeds the good bacteria in our digestive tract to improve the health of our digestive system. A single serving of pistachios contains as much as 3 grams of dietary fiber.
Nuts, including pistachios, are rich in minerals such as magnesium. One benefit of magnesium is that it may aid sleep because it assists in helping the muscles relax and quiet activity in the brain by working as an inhibitory neurotransmitter.
10. Energy Pistachios have been shown to promote energy, which is why so many professional athletes consume them while training. More energy means we’ll commit to getting enough exercise. But what is Dr. Mike’s main reason for having his clients eat pistachios? “They taste good. People are much more likely to stick to a healthy diet when the food is tasty and fun to eat.” —(BPT) March 2018

The possibility of interference in blood testing is low, but if you’re taking high-dose biotin for hair, skin or nail health, for example, it is best to inform your doctor before a blood test. Just as you may need to fast before certain types of tests, you may need to hold off on taking supplements like biotin for at least eight hours before blood work. The survey, commissioned by Roche Diagnostics, also found that most Americans (85 percent) expect their physician to provide complete instructions on how to prepare for a blood test. “Many factors - from stress, to prescription medication, to vitamins - can affect blood test results, so it’s important to be proactive in communicating about medicines or supplements you’re taking rather than waiting to be asked,” said Dr. Emily Jungheim, associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Ask your healthcare provider about ways to prepare for blood tests. Here are some simple tips to follow:
1. 2. 3.

With recent interest in the use of supplements like biotin as beauty treatments, it’s especially critical for consumers, doctors and lab personnel to talk before blood tests because very high doses of supplements could interfere with some test results.
Write down all your prescription medicines the night before a blood test so you can share up-to-date information with the lab technician or your doctor. Also report vitamins, supplements, nutraceuticals and any over-the-counter medications. Know the doses of the medicines and supplements you are taking. The dose matters. You may not be aware that 5 mg of biotin per day, for example, is equal to the amount of biotin in 100 capsules of a typical daily multivitamin. —(BPT)

Is Your Life in Balance? DAILY HEALTHY HABITS TO CONSIDER
E
very so often, it’s important to take stock of your routine and make improvements where necessary.
Find Time to Decompress • If you’re a morning person, get out of bed 30 minutes earlier than normal to wake up with your favorite coffee or tea and think about what you need to accomplish for the day. • More of a night owl? Spend at least 30 minutes before going to sleep to unplug from technology and relax with a new book you’ve had on your list to read. • Schedule time for exercise to reduce stress and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Planning workouts ahead of time will make you more likely to stick to them.
Write Everything Down • Handwritten notes and to-do lists will reinforce your memory of the tasks you need to conquer. They also give you the option to look at what you need to do for the day and prioritize the list. Consider a personal planner. • Documenting your day not only keeps you organized, but also provides you with an opportunity to look back and reflect on your life’s accomplishments, memories and milestones from the year.

Balanced Diet, Balanced Life • Maintaining a healthy, balanced diet will help you feel great, and can increase your focus, energy levels and productivity. • Plan out your meals ahead of time before going shopping by marking them in a calendar. This will give you more time during the week to cook and prepare meals, without having to make frequent trips to the store or feel tempted to grab take-out. You’ll be more likely to stick with the habit if you love the calendar you use. • Cooking your own fresh meals can help keep your bank account balanced, and is often much healthier than food from a restaurant. A Quick Look at Our Prices
iguring out what’s best for your skin can feel like solving a difficult mystery— everyone’s condition is unique, there are countless treatment options and people will do almost anything for a clear complexion.
“When it comes to your skin, there are many elements to consider,” says Dr. David Lortscher, board-certified dermatologist, CEO and founder of Curology. “Clogged pores, acne and other common issues can be a result of age, genetics, lifestyle and environmental factors. I often hear about common misconceptions that cause otherwise well-meaning people to make mistakes that trigger larger skincare problems.” To help people better understand skincare and take control of their daily regimen, Dr. Lortscher shares the top misconceptions about skincare and acne.
Misconception 1: Exercise and sweat can cause acne. Fact: Sweating while exercising doesn’t cause acne. The eccrine glands produce sweat and the sebaceous glands produce oil - so revving up the sweat glands doesn’t actually turn on the oil glands involved in acne breakouts. The truth is sweating and humidity can aggravate breakouts by giving the bacteria on the skin a better environment to grow. Cleansing is key post-workout, but keep in mind vigorously cleansing your skin can also be a source of friction that aggravates acne. The best strategy is to splash comfortable-temperature water on your face and neck, then pat dry gently.

Misconception 2: Chocolate and greasy foods cause acne. Fact: Many people have heard that chocolate and junk food are the worst foods for your skin, but modern science hasn’t found a direct link between acne and oily foods. Diets are like acne treatments: highly individual. That’s not to say your eating habits can’t affect your skin. Eating simple carbs and sugar raises your blood sugar levels, causing your body to produce excess insulin, in turn stimulating oil production and leading to more inflammation and increased acne severity.

Misconception 3: DIY skincare and home remedies are good for your skin. Fact: The DIY craze has extended to skincare routines, giving people ample ways to create their own remedies at home. However, it’s wise to be careful about the ingredients applied to your skin.
WHAT MAKES ESSEX ACUPUNCTURE DIFFERENT is our dedication to results, to the continued pursuit of holistic health and to providing a path to obtaining it.
Some people try baking soda as a cost-effective scrub or mask. Baking soda is pH 9 and the pH of the skin is 4.5-5 or so. Therefore, scrubbing your face with a baking soda paste can be harsh and disturb your skin’s natural barrier, leading to red, raw and sensitive skin and leaving it susceptible to breakout.
Dedicated to intrinsic convalescence and using Eastern medicine as our guide, Acupuncture is a minimally invasive technique that delivers powerful results.
Others suggest lemon juice as a home remedy for acne but it can cause significant dryness, redness and irritation. Lemon juice may have an exfoliating effect on the most superficial dead skin cells, but there are better ways to treat your acne. If you’re fed up with DIY remedies and over-the-counter products just haven’t worked for you, you have options. Try custom prescription skincare like Curology, a service that gets you expert dermatology care from the comfort of your home. Just take a few photos and a skin quiz to get a prescription formula customized to your individual needs. (continued on page 58)

Dermatologist Debunks: Top 5 Skincare Misconceptions (continued from page 57)
Misconception 4: You can make your pores smaller.
Misconception 5: You only need to wear sunscreen on sunny days.
Fact: Most people want smaller pores, but in reality, you can’t change the size or force them “open” or “closed.” Pore size is genetic; you can’t shrink them or make pores go away. To keep large pores from worsening, treat acne breakouts, don’t pick and use sun protection. Sun exposure breaks down collagen, which is the support structure surrounding the pores, so pores do appear larger as you age.
Fact: It doesn’t matter if it’s sunny or cloudy; if you plan to spend time outdoors, wear sunscreen daily. It is estimated that damage caused by ultraviolet rays from the sun is responsible for up to 80 percent of skin aging. SPF is a measure of a sunscreen’s ability to prevent UVB from damaging the skin. Most sunscreens with an SPF of 15 or higher do an excellent job of protecting against UVB. For extended outdoor activity, use a water-resistant, broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. —(BPT)

Restaurant Guide
Dino Suriano
Everyone who knows Rare The Steakhouse in Little Falls knows that it is one of the premier establishments in New Jersey to order up one of the region’s best plates of grilled red meat. According to chef Dino Suriano, the most popular of those are the 10-ounce Fillet and the well-known 26-ounce Cowboy Rib Steak. And, while the average Essex County diner might not think of this legendary steak house as a place to order seafood, it is. In fact, Suriano says, “most diners begin their meal with a seafood appetizer before chowing down on one of the renowned steaks.” Oysters, clams, and crabcakes have been for some time the most popular first courses. With this in mind, Chef Suriano has created this seasonal seafood appetizer for Spring: Charred Octopus. The appetizer is served on a bed of Arugula, Fennel and Blood Oranges, and then perfectly dressed with a Citrus Vinaigrette. According to Suriano, “It’s light, it’s healthy, it’s good for you.” We have to agree.

Diamond Minds
Pushing The Limits By Barry Farber
F
amed racecar driver Mario Andretti once said, “If everything seems under control, you’re just not going fast enough.” Obviously, he wasn’t advocating going so fast that you spin out and crash; he was talking about pushing the limits, going beyond what is “safe” and taking a calculated risk. In life and in business, the only way to test your limits is by opening the throttle and going forward, past the point you think you can achieve. Many of the actions we take are difficult, but not particularly scary. Other actions are not particularly difficult, but may be incredibly frightening. Of course, frightening is a relative term. If you’re an outgoing person who loves to get up and entertain, making a business presentation may be just another part of the job. But if you’re shy and don’t like speaking in public, that same presentation may send shivers up your spine. To you, taking that action may appear to be a great risk. (What if you forget what you’re supposed to say? What if your boss doesn’t like it?) But if you don’t take the risk, you can’t reap the reward. When you take an action that includes some degree of fear, you automatically increase your confidence level
for the next time. You know that you have gone beyond your fear, that you have made the effort. And if you do it once, you can do it again-you can also move to the next level of action. Each level of action we achieve serves as the foundation for the one to follow.
See the Invisible
Sometimes pushing the limits means seeing the invisible-going after opportunities other people don’t see. Entrepreneur of the Year Jim McCann, founder of l-800-FLOWERS, is constantly looking for those opportunities. “Every so often, I ask myself: when I look back five years from now, where will the really big opportunities have come from? What are the things I’m going to look at and wish I had done? That forces you to take your best guess, with the evidence that is in front of you, as to how the business world is going to change-and make sure that you’re positioning your company to be at the edge of that change.”
Top Yourself
You don’t have to be extraordinary to accomplish extraordinary things, but you do have to be willing to do whatever it takes to achieve your vision—even if it’s extreme.
When I interviewed Tony Hawk, Barry Farber world champion skateboarder in the X-Games, he told me he pushes the limits in both sports and business. He said, “No matter how far you go with skating, you’ve got to keep challenging yourself. Even if you’re considered to be on top of your field-in business too-there are ways you can improve yourself and keep coming up with new challenges. The goal is not to be better than everyone else. The goal is to be better than yourself.” When you’re older and looking back on your life, you won’t be telling stories about the times when everything came easily. You’ll look back and talk about the things that were most challenging, and therefore most exciting. Robert Louis Stevenson once said, “To be what we are, to become what we are capable of becoming, is the only end of life.” Do you know right now what you are capable of becoming? How can you ever know, unless you are willing to put yourself to the test? The only way to become everything you are capable of becoming is by pushing the limits, every single day.”
