The Pink Lady

ink steps welcome guests into Sue Waldman’s Verona home, which give an inkling of what to expect within the walls. Inside, Waldman painted all of the rooms in different shades of pink.

After a multi-year search for the perfect abode, Waldman purchased her house two years ago. She found the house serendipitously with her godmother. She chose to decorate her home in pinks because the color is associated with love, joy and gentleness, values she embraces every day. Also, after renting, she was ready to express herself. Waldman says, “I wanted to make a statement of empowerment, divine feminine energy, freedom and playfulness. Imagine the world if every person was reminded every day that life is precious… that we should not take it for granted, that our dreams can come true and that love is always around us.” Waldman celebrated her 22nd year in private practice as a Psychotherapist. Strutting across the runway for philanthropy never looked so glamorous. A local charity, Catwalk4Cancer, brings friends and families together in high fashion to raise money to fight pediatric cancer.

n May 2012, 11-year-old Short Hills resident, Tallie Elisha, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. She was treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in New York City and, after a two-year struggle, beat the disease. Witnessing her best friend’s courageous fight, Ashley Raz decided to help Tallie by taking a stance against pediatric cancer as part of her Mitzvah project. Taylor Cooper, a friend

Combat Pediatric Cancer since middle school, joined the effort. By way of friendship, strength in numbers and courage, Catwalk4Cancer took a huge step forward. The charity fashion shows of Catwalk4Cancer feature children modeling the newest fashions from local vendors. Tallie, Ashley, Taylor and their friends have all walked the runway, showing that true beauty comes from the inside. Since 2013, Team Tallie has raised over $100,000, with a goal of reaching $250,000 in 2016. This year, Catwalk4Cancer has teamed up with East Coast USA Pageant and East Coast Starz, a premiere children’s runway and modeling

agency. The Third Catwalk for Cancer fashion shows will take place on April 24 and May 13 to 15, all events at the Marriott in Whippany. Children ages 18 months to 17 years are invited register to walk the runway. Special apparel and accessories are being offered for sale; all proceeds benefit pediatric cancer research at MSKCC. Registration is $145, and includes couture clothing styled by NY stylist Stacie Fitzgerald, runway lessons, make-up, hair and professional photo shoot. Cancer-free today, Tallie says, “Together we will find a cure. We hope that someday childhood cancer will be as easy as a walk down the catwalk.”

math educator of 25 years and mother of four, Jodi Ralston has been teaching mathematics in both public and private school settings since 1990. What more can I do at home to help foster a love of math and mathematical skills in my child? Indeed, “a love of math” need not be an oxymoron. Games such as Mastermind and Yahtzee are also great for building logic skills and numerical fluency. As a parent, speak fondly of math and use numbers in daily interactions with your kids –whether you’re in the kitchen, on the road, or at the game.

My child seems to do well on homework, but not on quizzes and tests. How does this happen? This most commonly results from a discrepancy of measure. To encourage students to complete their assignments, teachers often grade homework as a measure of participation and completion. On the other hand, quizzes and tests mean to measure retention and accuracy. If homework is graded for accuracy, good homework grades but poor test results may indicate a parent or tutor is “helping” too much at home. They may be treating the symptom and not the root cause (mathematical knowledge gaps). In both of these cases, poor test results could be the symptom of a larger issue: a lack of real mathematical understanding.

What can we do for our child who is really struggling with mathematics? Often simply adjusting the level of work assigned is the critical first step. By allowing the child to be successful with the work at hand, a positive attitude is fostered and reinforced. Thereafter, building upon incremental successes, a more solid footing in math is gained. Mathematical intuition (number sense) does not happen by accident. It is the result of a process of repeated encounter and interaction with a specific and progressive set of concepts –each presented in a way that makes most sense to the individual learner. For a child to progress in a meaningful and lasting manner, math should not be viewed as just a sequence of drill and practice exercises floating in a sea of facts to memorize by rote. Math is a language and, as such, warrants more immersive exposure.

What can I do for a child finding math in school too easy and who is feeling unchallenged? Students who are strong in mathematics deserve to see and enjoy the full value of numbers. To complement their school classroom experience, strong students can be kept enthusiastic, engaged, and gainfully challenged at learning centers offering customized learning plans using excellent curriculum delivered by exceptional instructors.

What resources are available locally to help students develop their mathematical fluency? Beyond home activities, an after-school, weekend or summer program may be the ideal adjunct for your child’s regular classroom instruction. Believing strongly that every child has the ability to be more successful with a solid foundation in mathematics, I launched Mathnasium Learning Centers here locally seven years ago with my husband, James. Our success comes from teaching in a way that makes sense to each child as an individual learner. When math makes sense, kids excel – in the classroom at school, and beyond in life – whether struggling today or looking to get further ahead.

Private tutoring has helped my daughter’s grade, but not her standardized test score in math. Why? Private tutoring too often leads to learned dependence. With the same tutor always at your child’s side, tonight's homework gets done, tomorrow's test gets passed (even occasionally “aced”), but weeks go by and all is forgotten (except the bill for tutoring ;-). Math is a language best learned through multiple voices with sufficient time accorded to independent practice. pril is Oral Cancer Awareness Month. To aid in her mission against oral cancer, cosmetic and family dentist Dr. Tina Moheb has added using the high-tech screening tool, VELscope®, in addition to her routine oral cancer screening she conducts at her Verona practice. She explains, “With oral cancer, early detection is the key to survival.” Suburban Essex asked Dr. Moheb some important questions about this disease.

What are the symptoms of oral cancer, and can it be prevented? Oral cancer has many symptoms, including (1) any red, white, or black discoloration or ulceration of the soft tissue ; (2) a sore that doesn’t heal within three weeks; or (3) painful chewing or swallowing, just to name a few. But by the time a patient is symptomatic, it is pretty late and the cancer may have already spread. To prevent oral cancer, do not smoke or chew tobacco, drink only in moderation, limit sun exposure, use sunscreen on the lips as well, see your dentist regularly and make sure to get oral cancer screenings. Also, brush and floss regularly, as an unhealthy mouth reduces the immune system and inhibits the body’s ability to fight off potential cancers.

Why VELscope? VELscope technology uses a special type of light that enhances my ability to detect tissue changes so subtle that they are not visible to the naked eye. Newly renovated, the restaurant offers delicious meals, generous portions and a very friendly staff with a unique and inviting ambiance. For a lasting memory, make sure to reserve one of the private dining booths in its original Pullman train car. Start with Oysters Rockefeller ($12.95), with bacon and spinach piled on top of oysters in a delightful presentation. Or sample the remarkably light calamari ($12.95), served not with the traditional marinara sauce, but rather with a tasty sweet and sour one. The rich lobster macaroni and cheese ($15.95) offers a cheesy twist on the traditional, with a generous amount of lobster and truffle oil. When selecting a salad, the fantastic poached pear salad ($11.95) is a must. A pear poached in Cabernet wine sits atop mesclun greens, with dried cranberries, lightly candied walnuts and blue cheese crumbles, perfectly dressed in a lemon-thyme dressing. The real star of the The Essex House menu, though, is steak. All steaks are USDA dry-aged, and are accompanied by whipped potatoes and

seasonal vegetables. The 28-ounce Tomahawk Ribeye ($44.95), served on the bone, is a wellseasoned melt-in-the-mouth experience. The smaller in size, but not in taste, filet mignon (8 ounces for $37.95 or 12 ounces for $42.95) is equally enjoyable on the tongue. If craving seafood, the pan seared sea scallops ($32.95) are mouthwateringly juicy, while the grilled long line swordfish ($28.95) dances on the palate. Save room for dessert! The chocolate lava cake ($10.95) and red velvet cheesecake ($9.95) are both to die for. The former oozes chocolate while the latter is light and luscious. The family-owned restaurant also features an oversized bar with its own menu. Happy hour specials are served Tuesday through Friday, 4 to 6 pm, with live music every Friday and Saturday night. In addition, private banquet rooms are available for parties up to 150 people. The Essex House serves lunch Tuesday through Friday, 11:30am to 3pm; dinner Tuesday through Thursday, 5 to 10pm, Friday, 5 to 11 pm and weekends 4:30 to 11pm; and a full Sunday buffet brunch ($28.95), 11am to 3pm. Materials being collected at the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day include pesticides and herbicides, automotive fluids (antifreeze, motor oil, steering fluids, etc.), gasoline and kerosene, paint thinners and solvents, household cleaning fluids, oil based paints and stains, darkroom and photographic chemicals, car batteries, chemistry sets, driveway sealer, home fire extinguishers, barbecue type propane tanks, aerosol spray paints, pool chemicals, fluorescent light bulbs and ballasts, Nicad and rechargeable batteries, and mercury and products containing mercury. We will not be accepting latex paint, unlabeled or unidentified materials, asbestos, regulated medical waste or infectious waste, commercial or industrial waste, empty containers, explosives, munitions, ordnance or reactive materials, smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms, and household batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, 9V).

Items being accepted at the Computer and Electronics Recycling Day are computers, monitors, printers, fax machines, scanners, telecom equipment, speakers, televisions, keyboards, main frames, VCRs, stereos, DVD players, toasters, irons and cellular telephones. We will not be accepting smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms.
