The Pink Lady

P

ink steps welcome guests into Sue Waldman’s Verona home, which give an inkling of what to expect within the walls. Inside, Waldman painted all of the rooms in different shades of pink.

After a multi-year search for the perfect abode, Waldman purchased her house two years ago. She found the house serendipitously with her godmother. She chose to decorate her home in pinks because the color is associated with love, joy and gentleness, values she embraces every day. Also, after renting, she was ready to express herself. Waldman says, “I wanted to make a statement of empowerment, divine feminine energy, freedom and playfulness. Imagine the world if every person was reminded every day that life is precious… that we should not take it for granted, that our dreams can come true and that love is always around us.” Waldman celebrated her 22nd year in private practice as a Psychotherapist. She also is a Master Reiki Practitioner and Meditation Teacher, www.SueWaldman.com. According to Waldman, “Pink is not just a color… it is an attitude.” As she always says, “Each and every day is a new beginning and Anything is Possible!” Sue Waldman will be signing books (Big, Bold Business Advice, Vol II) at The North Jersey Woman’s Expo on May 2 at Mayfair Farms.

Let Anderson Electric Amp Up Solutions to Your Electrical Needs By Cynthia Rositano, photos by Dan Epstein

H

iring an experienced electrician entails more than flipping a switch. The licensed, insured and fullytrained electricians of Anderson Electric Company bring over 20 years of experience to every project, ensuring quality work every time. Anderson Electric is a full-service residential and commercial contractor. “Whether you require the installation of ceiling fans or back-up generators, upgrades to electrical service or landscape lighting that accentuates your home’s architectural uniqueness, we are there every step of the way to ensure your satisfaction,” says owner George Anderson, who is involved with all projects. The company specializes in knob and tube wiring upgrades. Anderson explains

that many homes built between the 1880s through the 1940s have this wiring system, now obsolete and a fire hazard. “Upgrading is a worthwhile investment for homeowners, especially those considering selling their homes.” In fact, most insurance companies require the upgrade before issuing a policy on a home with this type of wiring.

In addition, the company is a certified Generac generator dealer and service provider. Anderson encourages homeowners to install a back-up generator, saying, “Power loss is a year-round concern.” A generator can prevent a water damage nightmare caused by non-working sump pumps and pipes that freeze then burst due to lack of heat.

Anderson Electric also excels in green energy solutions. Asked for a green tip, Anderson recommends switching to LED bulbs, which have lengthy lifespans, are virtually maintenance free and are a more environmentally friendly option than traditional incandescent and compact florescent light bulbs (CFLs). Making the switch can reduce energy consumption by almost 70 percent.

As the winner of the 2015 Best Electrician Award, Anderson Electric stands behind its reputation as the Suburban Essex Magazine readers #1 choice for Electrical Contractors by providing the best service and installation for all of their customers. For Expert Electrical Service and installation contact Anderson Electric at 973-857-4333 or visit them at www.AndersonElectric.com to learn more about their full range of services. April 2016

Taking Math Education Beyond the Classroom for a Lifetime of Success

A

math educator of 25 years and mother of four, Jodi Ralston has been teaching mathematics in both public and private school settings since 1990. With a Masters in Math Education, earned with distinction from the University of Minnesota, Jodi (seen right with husband, James) owns and teaches at the Mathnasium Learning Centers in Chatham, Summit, Westfield, and Livingston. Favoring a highly individualized curriculum tailored to each student’s specific needs over classroom group instruction, Jodi shares her love of teaching and expertise, answering some of the most frequent questions she gets in her centers each day from parents wanting to do more to assure their children’s academic success.

Q

What more can I do at home to help foster a love of math and mathematical skills in my child? Indeed, “a love of math” need not be an oxymoron. Whether a student already loves math or claims to despise even the smallest of numbers, there are many resources available to help develop a child’s mathematical interests. The Number Devil by Hans Magnus Enzensberger, Murderous Maths series by Kjartan Poskitt, and Calculus for Cats by Kenn Amdahl and Jim Loats (but not for your pet ;-) are but a short list of great books to help spark mathematical intrigue in young or teen readers. Games such as Mastermind and Yahtzee are also great for building logic skills and numerical fluency. As a parent, speak fondly of math and use numbers in daily interactions with your kids –whether you’re in the kitchen, on the road, or at the game.

Q

My child seems to do well on homework, but not on quizzes and tests. How does this happen? This most commonly results from a discrepancy of measure. To encourage students to complete their assignments, teachers often grade homework as a measure of participation and completion. On the other hand, quizzes and tests mean to measure retention and accuracy. If homework is graded for accuracy, good homework grades but poor test results may indicate a parent or tutor is “helping” too much at home. They may be treating the symptom and not the root cause (mathematical knowledge gaps). In both of these cases, poor test results could be the symptom of a larger issue: a lack of real mathematical understanding.

Q

Jodi and James Ralston

Q

What can we do for our child who is really struggling with mathematics? Often simply adjusting the level of work assigned is the critical first step. By allowing the child to be successful with the work at hand, a positive attitude is fostered and reinforced. Thereafter, building upon incremental successes, a more solid footing in math is gained. Mathematical intuition (number sense) does not happen by accident. It is the result of a process of repeated encounter and interaction with a specific and progressive set of concepts –each presented in a way that makes most sense to the individual learner. For a child to progress in a meaningful and lasting manner, math should not be viewed as just a sequence of drill and practice exercises floating in a sea of facts to memorize by rote. Math is a language and, as such, warrants more immersive exposure.

Q

What can I do for a child finding math in school too easy and who is feeling unchallenged? Students who are strong in mathematics deserve to see and enjoy the full value of numbers. To complement their school classroom experience, strong students can be kept enthusiastic, engaged, and gainfully challenged at learning centers offering customized learning plans using excellent curriculum delivered by exceptional instructors.

Q

What resources are available locally to help students develop their mathematical fluency? Beyond home activities, an after-school, weekend or summer program may be the ideal adjunct for your child’s regular classroom instruction. Believing strongly that every child has the ability to be more successful with a solid foundation in mathematics, I launched Mathnasium Learning Centers here locally seven years ago with my husband, James. Our success comes from teaching in a way that makes sense to each child as an individual learner. When math makes sense, kids excel – in the classroom at school, and beyond in life – whether struggling today or looking to get further ahead.

Private tutoring has helped my daughter’s grade, but not her standardized test score in math. Why? Private tutoring too often leads to learned dependence. With the same tutor always at your child’s side, tonight's homework gets done, tomorrow's test gets passed (even occasionally “aced”), but weeks go by and all is forgotten (except the bill for tutoring ;-). Math is a language best learned through multiple voices with sufficient time accorded to independent practice. Passing grades (even A’s and B’s) in elementary and middle school math do not guarantee that your child Jodi Ralston, Mathnasium has sufficient mathematical know-how necessary for success in high 973-377-6284 school, on standardized tests, college placement exams, and in life. www.mathnasium.com

ith the cold winter season passing, Air Group shares the following tips for home inspections that every homeowner should perform to keep systems running at maximum efficiency: ✓ Air Filter—After all the heavy use of heating systems during winter, it is time to change the air filter. Having a dirty air filter can increase the amount of allergens in the house and affect indoor air quality. ✓ Plumbing— Fix leaky faucets. Assuming a leaking faucet drips at a rate of one droplet per minute, about 3,000 gallons of water will be wasted in a year. In addition, check that pipes, drains and washer and dryer hook-ups are

not clogged and working properly. Make sure dryer vents are free from lint, which is a major cause of house fires. ✓ Humidifier—Lower the humidifier setting or turn it off for the summer. Air conditioning will be prevented from cooling the air properly if the humidifier is running. ✓ Air Conditioning—Call a qualified home comfort specialist to tune-up the air conditioning system. Cleaner coils means better efficiency and lower energy costs. Also, remember to remove the cover from the air conditioner before turning it on! If an air conditioner runs while covered, it could seriously damage the system.

Design Tip for a Modern Style Kitchen

H

omeowners often choose a modern theme for their kitchens. Consider installing medal furnishings and decor that work particularly well at establishing the chic and sophisticated look this style embodies. Metals are trending for modern kitchens. Everything from brushed aluminum, stainless steel and chrome to copper and nickel have taken center stage as materials for furniture and decor like lighting fixtures and kitchen tables. Not only does metal create a sleek appearance, but a simple, minimalist vibe that goes hand in hand with a modern theme. The cool, gray metal hues also contribute to a neutral color scheme, which is another trending feature for modern kitchens. Your interior designer can help you choose which type of metal works best in your space. —Valerie Ruddy, Decorating Den Interiors 973-239-3004, www.decdens.com/valerieruddy Thank You for Voting Us Best Custom Closets

he use of minerals in home décor is a wonderful way to add color and texture to your room. Whether it’s a bowl of pyrite, a giant uncut quartz crystal or an unpolished semi-precious stone, these earthly accents work great for everything from table-tops to door pulls. A gorgeous collection of minerals can add intrigue to your interior. They can be the centerpiece on a coffee table, used as bookends on shelving, included in a succulent planter, frame a mirror or be displayed in cases. Minerals and semi-precious stones can be found in numerous places—your favorite décor dealer, metaphysical boutiques, a museum gift shop, maybe even in your own backyard.

f you love the results of spring cleaning, but not the process, it could be that the methods and tools you’re using to get the job done are making the work harder than it needs to be. To get your to-dos done with less effort, consider these tips.

Make It Fun Before you even get started, take steps to prepare yourself for an afternoon or day of chores. Turn on some music to motivate you. Open the windows to get some fresh air. Eat a solid meal so you’re fueled for the tasks at hand. You’ll already be in a much better mood.

Avoid Harsh Chemicals One of the less savory aspects of cleaning can be the exposure of one’s eyes and skin to harsh and irritating chemical formulas. But it doesn’t have to be this way. In some cases, you can get the same results with natural alternatives and, at times, just water. For example, microfiber is designed to pick up and trap dust, dirt, fingerprints, and grime from furniture, woodwork, and cabinetry without scratching surfaces. Some brands offer an array of cleaning supplies made of this material, including cloths, chenille mitts, mops and dusters, which offer deeper cleaning with just a little bit of water.

Avoid Reaching Cleaning can be a pain in the neck—and back, and everywhere else for that matter. Treat your cleaning like a workout. Stretch your neck, shoulders and torso beforehand. Also, look for implements that reach so you don’t have to. For

40

Suburban Essex

April 2016

example, a versatile tool like the Everywhere Duster, with its washable microfiber head, pivots to work in hard-to-reach nooks and crannies from floor to ceiling, such as window sills and molding.

Work Smart Mopping can be a tricky task when you’re using a conventional mop and bucket. Rather than push an ever-increasingly dirty mop around your floors, seek out smart cleaning tools that work for you. A built-in washing spinner at the bottom of the bucket can help keep things cleaner as you go. Look for a mop that features two spinning mechanisms—one to wash and one to dry—so you don’t drip dirty water on the floors that you’re attempting to clean. Use microfiber cloths and dusters that hold onto the dirt they gather so you don’t leave a trail of dust as you move from room to room. These materials are machine washable, so your postcleaning tasks are a cinch as well. The fresh feel that spring cleaning affords does not need to come at a great cost to your happiness. With a few tweaks to your routine, you can make it simpler and more enjoyable. For more cleaning tips, visit www.Casabella.com.

unning 4 Answers, a race against Alzheimer’s, is hosting its seventh annual event on Saturday, April 30, 2016 in Roseland. A USATF-sanctioned 5K race and 2-mile fun run/fitness walk, this event raises money for Alzheimer’s research. To date, Running 4 Answers, has donated $205,000 to Cure Alzheimer’s Fund (www.curealz.org).

Rita Wilson Performs

Started by two Roseland residents, Carolyn Mastrangelo and Barbara Geiger, the event was created because Mastrangelo, whose mother passed away from Alzheimer’s in the fall after suffering for 17 years, could not find a race to raise money. Their threefold mission: raise awareness of Alzheimer’s disease, raise money for its research and create a fun community event.

Although Rita Wilson is well-known as an actress as well as a film producer, few may be aware that her early show biz ambitions were actually musical. During the past two years she has collaborated with a number of extremely talented and successful songwriters composing original material to be featured on her second album, self-titled Rita Wilson. 8pm. SOPAC, One SOPAC Way, South Orange. 973-313-2787. www.sopacnow.org

Sponsored by local organizations such as Tri-Coastal Design, Regal Bank, St. Barnabas Health and Fox Rothschild LLP, the race starts at 8:30am and takes place at 19 Harrison Avenue in Roseland, running through Essex Fells. There are cash prizes for the first three race finishers, both male and female. The walk starts at 8:35 and is also in Essex Fells. Strength Training Improves Activity & Increases Metabolism

D

id you know that science reveals strength training is the single most effective and time efficient form of exercise you can do? It builds muscular strength, improves bone density, increases cardio endurance, enhances flexibility and boosts metabolism—all in the same workout. With your stronger body, you’ll be leaner, have more energy, run faster, jump higher and crush the golf ball! Every activity you enjoy you’ll enjoy even more. Strength training also stimulates many other health benefits such as improved cholesterol and lipid profile, blood pressure, arthritis, diabetes, depression, self confidence and it even de-ages you at the genetic level. And the best part? You only need one or two, 15-30 minute sessions a week to obtain excellent results. Why? Recovery. Once stimulated, your body needs time, roughly 48-72 hours to produce the many benefits. A little strength training goes a very long way. So, do your body a strong favor. Find a spare half hour a week and adopt a sound, safe strength training program. As Shakespeare said: “O! Lace Up Your Sneakers for National Walk to Work Day

N

ational Walk to Work Day, celebrated the first Friday in April, is an excellent time to recommit to a healthy lifestyle. Instead of revving up the engine of your car, consider lacing up your sneakers instead, and head to work using the power of your own two feet. Bring a bottle of water and wear comfortable shoes. If you have never walked to work before, map the route first to ensure that it’s a safe walk every step of the way. If commuting by foot is impossible because of safety or mileage, make an effort to go for a walk at lunch or after work instead. Consider taking the stairs instead of the elevator—the important part is to get active. —SPM Wire

Daily Healthy Habits to Consider

E

very so often, it’s important to take stock of your routine and make improvements where necessary. Find Time to Decompress • If you’re a morning person, get out of bed 30 minutes earlier than normal to wake up with your favorite coffee or tea and think about what you need to accomplish for the day. • More of a night owl? Spend at least 30 minutes before going to sleep to unplug from technology and relax with a new book you’ve had on your list to read. • Schedule time for exercise to reduce stress and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Planning workouts ahead of time will make you more likely to stick to them.

They also give you the option to look at what you need to do for the day and prioritize the list. Consider a personal planner. • Documenting your day not only keeps you organized, but also provides you with an opportunity to look back and reflect on your life’s accomplishments, memories and milestones from the year. Balanced Diet, Balanced Life • Maintaining a healthy, balanced diet will help you feel great, and can increase your focus, energy levels and productivity. • Plan out your meals ahead of time before going shopping by marking them in a calendar. This will give you more time during the week to cook and prepare meals, without having to make frequent trips to the store or feel tempted to grab takeout. Dr. Tina Moheb Offers a Life-Saving Q&A By Brenda Schait, photos by Dan Epstein

A

pril is Oral Cancer Awareness Month. To aid in her mission against oral cancer, cosmetic and family dentist Dr. Tina Moheb has added using the high-tech screening tool, VELscope®, in addition to her routine oral cancer screening she conducts at her Verona practice. She explains, “With oral cancer, early detection is the key to survival.” Suburban Essex asked Dr. Moheb some important questions about this disease.

What are the symptoms of oral cancer, and can it be prevented? Oral cancer has many symptoms, including (1) any red, white, or black discoloration or ulceration of the soft tissue ; (2) a sore that doesn’t heal within three weeks; or (3) painful chewing or swallowing, just to name a few. But by the time a patient is symptomatic, it is pretty late and the cancer may have already spread. To prevent oral cancer, do not smoke or chew tobacco, drink only in moderation, limit sun exposure, use sunscreen on the lips as well, see your dentist regularly and make sure to get oral cancer screenings. Also, brush and floss regularly, as an unhealthy mouth reduces the immune system and inhibits the body’s ability to fight off potential cancers.

Why VELscope? VELscope technology uses a special type of light that enhances my ability to detect tissue changes so subtle that they are not visible to the naked eye. Early detection means early treatment, resulting in much better odds to beat the disease. VELscope can be an invaluable additional aid in the fight against cancer in the oral cavity. If oral cancer is detected early, the survival rate is ninety percent. With delayed diagnosis, which is more often the case, survival rates plummet to as low as fifty percent.

How does your practice screen for oral cancer? At Advanced Smiles Dental Care, we do a thorough head, neck and soft tissue examination with every one of our patient examinations. Leadership Through Perseverance

W

hen Jay Winik wrote his instant classic book over 15 years ago, April 1865: The Month That Saved America, he was writing about the last month of the Civil War. He knew he would have to do a lot of historical research and that he had a compelling story to tell. What he did not realize was that he also would find out a lot about what makes good leaders.

“Genius is divine perseverance. Genius I cannot claim nor even extra brightness, but perseverance all can have.” —Woodrow Wilson, U.S. President

According to Winik, “What I discovered is this most common trait among great leaders: They can repeatedly suffer failure and be undaunted by it. They adhere to their vision, and they just keep plugging away. Plugging away seems like the simplest explanation you can have, but historically it’s very clear. People who go on to do great things in history often do them against great odds. They do it because they refuse to be defeated by the whirl and sway of events. You see it in Lincoln; you see it in Grant; you see it in Robert E. Lee.” “At the end of my book,” Winik continues, “I included a panorama of what America would become in the 50 years following the Civil War. I looked at the people who go on to shape the country’s destiny. I was shocked by what I found. In 1865, most of these people were failures.”

“People seldom see the halting and painful steps by which the most insignificant success is achieved.” —Annie Sullivan, teacher and mentor

Winik goes on: “Mark Twain, for instance, was thinking about going to Hawaii and thinking that perhaps, at some future date, he might be able to write a book. Thomas Edison had just been fired from his fifth job and was working in a telegraph office. Henry Ford’s father told him, ‘You are a tinker, and you will never amount to anything.’ These men, who all turned out to be great leaders, had the internal drive to keep them going despite repeated failure. The lesson from this? Just when you think things cannot get better, keep going—and you can make them better.” Barry Farber is the host of the new Television program “Breakthrough” that can be seen on HomeTowneTV through Verizon (36) and Comcast (33) and also at BarryFarber.com. “All Aboard THE ESSEX HOUSE

Fine Dining in a Nostalgic Setting By Rhonda L. Rivera Photos by Dan Epstein

S

tep back in time to the Roaring Twenties and receive a warm welcome at The Essex House in West Orange. Newly renovated, the restaurant offers delicious meals, generous portions and a very friendly staff with a unique and inviting ambiance. For a lasting memory, make sure to reserve one of the private dining booths in its original Pullman train car. Start with Oysters Rockefeller ($12.95), with bacon and spinach piled on top of oysters in a delightful presentation. Or sample the remarkably light calamari ($12.95), served not with the traditional marinara sauce, but rather with a tasty sweet and sour one. The rich lobster macaroni and cheese ($15.95) offers a cheesy twist on the traditional, with a generous amount of lobster and truffle oil. When selecting a salad, the fantastic poached pear salad ($11.95) is a must. A pear poached in Cabernet wine sits atop mesclun greens, with dried cranberries, lightly candied walnuts and blue cheese crumbles, perfectly dressed in a lemon-thyme dressing. The real star of the The Essex House menu, though, is steak. All steaks are USDA dry-aged, and are accompanied by whipped potatoes and

seasonal vegetables. The 28-ounce Tomahawk Ribeye ($44.95), served on the bone, is a wellseasoned melt-in-the-mouth experience. The smaller in size, but not in taste, filet mignon (8 ounces for $37.95 or 12 ounces for $42.95) is equally enjoyable on the tongue. If craving seafood, the pan seared sea scallops ($32.95) are mouthwateringly juicy, while the grilled long line swordfish ($28.95) dances on the palate. Save room for dessert! The chocolate lava cake ($10.95) and red velvet cheesecake ($9.95) are both to die for. The former oozes chocolate while the latter is light and luscious. The family-owned restaurant also features an oversized bar with its own menu. Happy hour specials are served Tuesday through Friday, 4 to 6 pm, with live music every Friday and Saturday night. In addition, private banquet rooms are available for parties up to 150 people. The Essex House serves lunch Tuesday through Friday, 11:30am to 3pm; dinner Tuesday through Thursday, 5 to 10pm, Friday, 5 to 11 pm and weekends 4:30 to 11pm; and a full Sunday buffet brunch ($28.95), 11am to 3pm. Located at 525 Northfield Avenue in West Orange. Contact 973731-2222, www.essexhousenj.com.

A Leafy Superfood Worth Learning About Family Features

F

or people who manage their health through nutrition or use food as a medicinal replacement, few products offer the power of “superfoods.” Kale is one leafy green commonly recognized as a superfood, but watercress is a tastier superfood option worth considering. Watercress has more flavor, is more versatile and is healthier than its leafy cousins. It’s also easier to digest with a more pleasing texture. In fact, according to an independent research study published last spring by the Centers for Disease Control, it is the most nutrientdense food available today. For a high concentration of phytonutrients, antioxidants and vitamins, look to options such as those available through hydroponic greenhouse grower Hollandia Produce, which raises two cress varieties: Live Gourmet Living Upland Cress and Grower Pete’s Living Organic
