Fairfield Students Collect Books for Library

E

lementary students from Fairfield recently donated hundreds of books to their local library to aid in their summer reading program. Approximately 67 sixthgrade students from Winston Churchill School joined in on the book drive, with the donated books going to Fairfield Public Library. Charles Anderson, a sixth grade teacher at the school, reached out to Fairfield public library with help from reading specialist Erica Santalla. He wanted to see what his students could do to give back to the community. Brianna Columbo, Fairfield Public Library’s Director, informed him about the libray’s reading program in the summer. One of the library’s incentives for children that participate in the program is that they get to choose a book from the library to keep. The Winston Churchill School students donated 230 books to the library, which will those in grades kindergarten through sixth grade enhance their learning through reading.

A Race Against Alzheimer’s

T

he tenth annual “Running 4 Answers, A Race Against Alzheimer’s” will take place this year on May 4. The race, started by two Roseland moms, benefits the Alzheimer’s research organization Cure Alzheimer’s Fund, which concentrates on funding research with the highest probability of slowing, stopping or reversing Alzheimer’s disease. Since the annual race began, they have donated a total of $326,000 to the organization. The Running 4 Answers race features a 5k USATFcertified race and 2-mile fun run/fitness walk. Beginning at 8:30am at the Roseland Municipal Building, the courses travel through the tree-lined historic streets of Essex County. The fun family and community event will also have glitter tattoos, snacks, and an awards ceremony with prizes for the top three male and female finishers. Learn more about registering for the race and donating to Running 4 Answers at www.running4answers.org.

NCJW/Essex Launches “Carpool Conversations”

H

ave you ever been caught unprepared for the questions your children ask or wondered what they talk about when they think you’re not listening? The newest NCJW/Essex project, Carpool Conversations, aims to provide parents with the tools necessary to engage in conversations with their children about difficult and sensitive topics –before they face issues – allowing them to grow up strong, kind and safe. The project’s launch event will take place on Thursday April 4, 2019 from 10:30am-12 at Congregation B’nai Jeshurun, Short Hills, NJ. Carpool Conversations arose out of an NCJW/Essex production of SLUT: The Play in 2017, a provocative drama that sparked a conversation about consent, sexism and sexual violence as well as how to parent children in a particularly challenging environment influenced by social media. Acknowledging that conversations often start when parents are taking their children to and from activities, when they are not expecting or prepared for them to happen, NCJW/Essex created Carpool Conversations as an opportunity to help educate parents on how to navigate through these sensitive conversations with their children. 10

Suburban Essex

April 2019

The launch of Carpool Conversations will include a panel of local experts: Donna Ellenbogen, M.S. Ed., LCSW, Jacqueline Mesnik, PhD, Andrea Sherman, LCSW, and Abby Silverman, MD. With their unique perspectives, they will provide parents with the tools to engage in important conversations with their children as well as educate attendees on sensitive topics so they have a better understanding on how to address them in a discussion. The goal of Carpool Conversations is to breakdown walls between parents and children and open up opportunities for dialogue and understanding. Following the launch event, NCJW/Essex will continue Carpool Conversations with small group discussions facilitated by professionals in private homes or at the NCJW/Essex office about such topics as consent, sexuality explicit material, social media, body image and gender expectations. The fee to attend the Carpool Conversations launch is $10 for NCJW/Essex members and $15 for nonmembers. For more information or to register, please call (973) 740-0588 or visit www.ncjwessex.org.

Celebrations

Decorate for Spring Events with Debbie’s Designs By Jackie Schatell

I

t is no surprise that spring is a popular time to host events such as weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs, sweet 16’s, corporate events, and milestone events. The snow is gone, temperatures are warmer and spring flowers are in bloom. It is also the time when country clubs re-open and party venues are in high demand. Orhan Oncul, who owns East Hanover-based Debbie’s Designs— a one-stop-shop industry leader in event planning, design and production for distinctive social events—says he loves planning spring events where he can use blooming branches such as Cherry Blossoms, and peonies in centerpieces and arches. “We help those planning parties save money and avoid the frustration of working with multiple vendors,” says Oncul. “Clients work directly with us on everything from decorations, furniture and florals to custom graphics, lighting and more.” According to Oncul, this spring we will see themes based on pastel colors like pinks, peaches and yellows, with beautiful greeneries. Teen bar/bat mitzvah party lounges will be bursting with lights, blown up photos, logos and taglines. Oncul also says he expects to see a lot of outdoor parties. “When the weather allows, we will start taking parties outside

where we can change up the scenery and backgrounds and move around plants and flowers,” says Oncul. “We will also do outdoor photo pre-shoots as well as wedding after parties, comprising of acoustic guitars, marshmallow roasting, and a sprinkling of lights overhead.” “Spring is a beautiful time of year to create one-of-a-kind unforgettable moments,” says Oncul.

Stunning New Styles in Flowers & Plants for Your Garden

STRIKING NEW TRENDS IN FLOWERS AND PLANTS FOR YOUR GARDEN

T

oday’s plant lovers want more than the traditional flowers to enhance their home. Rather, people want to enjoy the experience of getting in touch with nature, while also looking for unique flowers and plants to add a more creative, personal touch of color and inspiration to their yards. This year, gardens will be more visually interesting, environmentally friendly and demonstrate the love and care provided by the families who tend them.

Ornamental Pepper

Here are a few of the latest gardening ideas you and your loved ones can enjoy, from Ball Horticultural Company.

Gardening as an Experience

Detoxing from our daily dependence on digital distractions and tech gadgets is becoming not just a desire, but a necessity. What better way for you and your loved ones to take a break from screens than to spend time with plants, creating beauty, serenity and even a nutritious lifestyle? Make the process a group effort: from going to your favorite garden center and choosing your veggies, to caring for them and watching them grow, then harvesting and eating, the full experience is something to enjoy. Plant and grow veggies like the Snackabelle Red Pepper, a mini bell pepper that starts out green, then ripens red, with a rich, sweet flavor - perfect to have at home for snacking as well as cooking. If you love natural fragrances, Lavender Blue Spear is a wonderful choice. They are easy to grow, and will achieve a height of nearly a foot. You can use the fresh lavender to make infused oil, soap, hand scrubs or bath salts.

New Color Choices

Look for unexpected colors to help you make a statement with your containers, window boxes or indoor potted plant garden this year. Striking new colors include the 2019 Pantone color of the year, “Living Coral,” seen in the Gerbera Revolution Salmon Shades potted flower, also known as the African Daisy. Gerbera plants are easy to care for and provide great indoor decor, which also makes them perfect choices for gift giving. New Tattoo Vinca looks like a work of art, with gorgeous petals showing modern colors, swirled with soft strokes of black that make each petal look inked. The Tattoo Vinca is not only lowmaintenance and heat-tolerant, but will attract pollinators like bees and butterflies to your garden. The Double Zahara Bright Orange Zinnia is another great choice for head-turning color. Its

Calibrachoa double flowers bloom in vivid orange, and they are suitable for landscaping and container planting. This flower is also a breeze to care for and pollinator-friendly. Or you can choose a unique plant with warm tones, like the bright and colorful Ornamental Pepper, with such attractive multi-colored fruits that they are grown just for show. The Ornamental Pepper displays intense shades of yellows, oranges and reds in its fruit. Other flowers catch the eye with dynamic texture, such as the lovely Double PinkTastic Calibrachoa, a fully double flower with a dark pink eye and lighter pink petals. Its burst of blooms will cover the plant and spill over their containers, window boxes or hanging baskets.

Easy Options for Beginers

New gardeners who want choices beyond traditional flower options have great alternatives this year. If you’re looking for plants that are durable and colorful, the Echinacea Sombrero Tres Amigos produces a deer-resistant perennial flower that is highly attractive to butterflies and songbirds. Tres Amigos shows three colors, opening as a peachy-orange color, then aging to rose and fading to burgundy.

ove over, grays and neutrals. Color is back in home decor, says Valerie Ruddy, owner of Verona’s Decorating Den Interiors. Clients are looking to “liven up their living spaces,” she says, after years of restrained, subtle shades. “We’re using indigos, greens, pops of pink.” And wallpaper in oversized floral patterns is also back. After so many years of careful neutrals, the trend is refreshing, Ruddy says. Of course, she notes, interior professionals see a room in a different way than most people. “We see it as a blank canvas to compose a design in, a design that requires balance,” she explains. Color, bold patterns and textures need to be balanced with calmer tones and negative space, giving the eye relief. Most of all, the design needs to be exactly what the homeowner wants to live and feel comfortable in.

Valerie Ruddy

Furniture is trending contemporary and mid-century modern. “Very clean lines, which helps to provide that balance to vibrant colors and patterns,” Ruddy says. She also often recommends re-upholstering, which can transform a beloved piece with good bones that’s become a bit tired. Here, performance fabrics have taken center stage, especially for active people and those with young children. In lighting, she sees contemporary design with a nod to the past. The right lighting works to “elevate the design,” she says. She’s also seeing many formal dining rooms being re-purposed as libraries or kids’ activity rooms. “People really want to use all their spaces, and by listening to their needs, we help them do that,” she says.

Your One-Stop-Shop for Outdoor Needs By Susan Baldani, photos by Dan Epstein

ith warm weather finally approaching, it is time to start planning the perfect setup for outdoor fun in the spring and summer. Luckily, Pelican Shops carries high-quality items for every season. The shop is not just a ski or winter gear store–customers can find a wide range of outdoor furniture, hot tubs, grills, pools, and pool supplies. For those with entertaining on their mind in the spring and summer, Pelican has a vast selection of outdoor patio sets in stock and ready for immediate delivery. Says store manager Bruce Sanderson, “The store has a few hundred sets on the floor for customers to choose from.” Whether you prefer cast aluminum, wicker or resin, with or without cushions, they have the one that’s right for your lifestyle. They can also assemble everything beforehand so it’s ready for use upon arrival. “We’re probably the largest patio and hot tub dealer on the East Coast,” says Sanderson. “When people come in here, it’s like a big, adult toy store.”

To relax with family and friends, choose a hot tub to go on your patio or deck. The preferred tubs are more comfortable with a better selection of jets. Sanderson notes that buyers should also look for a purification system that uses ultraviolet light rather than chemicals. To try before you buy, customers can even come in and try out the hot tubs that are up and running–just bring a bathing suit! To round out the summer setup, Pelican also has a large selection of propane and natural gas grills, a line of built-in grills, and charcoal grills for those who like slow cooking or smoking. They carry Weber, Napoleon, Alfresco and other high-quality brands that will last upwards of 15 years, so you can enjoy cooking for many seasons to come. All of Pelican’s sales people are knowledgeable about the products they carry and can guide buyers in finding the right items for their outdoor needs. A wide selection of above ground pools and water sports equipment are also available for outdoor fun. And spring is a great time to shop; they have up to 50% off sales going on now. April 2019

pring may not have quite sprung, but it’s time to think about freshening up rooms for the season. One of the hottest trends in do-it-yourself décor is transforming older furniture pieces into new treasures by painting them with chalk paint, say the experts at Rossi Decorating Center. “Every day, someone expresses an interest in repurposing a piece of furniture for another room, for a vacation home, or just updating the look of existing décor,” says Rossi Decorating’s manager, Pattie Leslie. “We carry one of the finest chalk paints, Chalkworthy.” The product is available in 11 readymixed colors, including white, and can be custom-blended to any Benjamin Moore color. For added interest, colors can be layered, distressed or waxed for an antique effect. “Everyone who’s tried it once has come back for another project,” she says.

Owner Bernard Rossi also points to floor coverings and window treatments as ideal ways to create new looks. If customers bring in an iPad or tablet showing the room they want to re-do, Rossi experts can suggest ideal options. Bernard especially likes the “boutique” look of Shaw Carpet, with its diverse textures, prints and designs. Window treatment pro Pattie points to Lafayette’s “Allure” Transitional Shades as versatile, non-pricey solutions to privacy plus good design.

Family-Run and Flexible, Lattimer Realty Gives Residents Reason to Shop Local By Jessica Schiffenhaus, photo by Dan Epstein

L

attimer Realty is one of the leading offices in sales and listings in the Caldwell and Fairfield area. And, 85 percent of their business comes from referrals. “Our goal is to make sure our clients are more than satisfied with their selling or buying experience,” states Jeffrey Lattimer, Sr. “Creating clients for life and steady referrals is still what this business is all about.” The Lattimers have deep roots in the West Essex area. Juliann and Jeffrey Lattimer Sr. started their real estate agency out of their Fairfield garage in 1983 and has since expanded into their present locations in Fairfield and Caldwell. Their sons, Jeffrey Jr. and Michael, as well as Jeffrey’s wife Patrese, who were raised in the area, are co-owners of the business. So, it only makes sense that they are passionate about keeping home buyers and sellers in the area satisfied. As an independently owned agency, the Lattimers pride themselves on their ability to do whatever it is they can to accommodate their clients. “We’re very flexible with what sellers or buyers want,” said Jeffrey Jr. “There are many options out there, but we can tailor something specific for each client.” According to Jeffrey Sr., “We offer fantastic service to all our clients while always keeping in mind the three categories that have formed our reputation over the past 36 years: honesty, respect and integrity.”

“We are very knowledgeable about the communities we service. We can answer any question that people would need to know,” added Patrese. “That’s why we live here and do most of our business here. We like to stay local and we’re proud of it.” When buying or selling, Lattimer Realty will pull out all the stops for their clients. For instance, they will visit homes before showing them to clients, and educate buyers along the way. They even have an in-house mortgage broker that can help with pre-approvals. And, if you are listing a house with Lattimer, every marketing effort will be exhausted—from coming soon announcements to social media blasts. “Whether you are a buyer or a seller, we will offer you a successful transaction because our reputation depends on it!” said Jeffrey Sr. “We encourage people in the community to come in and interview us,” said Jeffrey Jr. “Come meet us and you’ll be sold.”

SUMMER CAMP TIPS... “Summer is a great time to help your child build self-help skills and independence. Large, easy-to-read labels help children easily identify their own clothes when changing and packing up. Children develop a good sense of self when they can take responsibility for their own things.” —Congregation Agudath Israel “At camp, children can make new friends, explore the world around them, and learn that “I can” is much more fun than “I can’t.” In a safe environment created just for them, children learn real life skills, develop self-esteem, and gain a sense of independence and community, magic happens. Whether children are playing, exploring nature, conquering new heights, or becoming part of a camp family, they are creating memories and skills that will last a lifetime. Kids don’t remember their best day of television but will remember their best summer ever.”

“Our exciting camps and clinics are an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of golf by demonstrating simple movements that are easy for juniors to understand. This teaching philosophy allows all of our student to achieve success and gain greater enjoyment for golf at an earlier age. Our PGA Professionals will not only be teaching the basics of putting, chipping, pitching and full swing, but will also instill the integrity and life skills needed to perform The Academy’s goal is to honor the traditions of golf and to pass on the passion for the game. Don’t forget your hat and sun block!” —The Basking Ridge Golf Academy “Performing Arts programs encourage students to express themselves creatively. Nurturing the creative possibilities within children through their participation in dance, music, art and drama can bolster self-esteem and self-confidence. Having the opportunity to experience the arts truly matters...and it’s fun!” —Prime Time Summer Arts, Sharron Miller’s Academy for the Performing Arts

From the Camps Directors Themselves! “STEM camps open kids to exciting advances in science, technology and engineering through hands-on exploration and experimentation. If a child shows an interest, nurture that flame by picking a supportive environment that promotes learning by doing and celebrates failure.” —International Ivy Summer Enrichment Programs “Theatre Camp provides kids with skills that they can use in the future in all aspects of their life. A class on how to audition not only helps to prepare students for a professional audition, but also trains them how to best present themselves in an interview or when delivering a speech. Improv classes help develop quick thinking skills.”

“The most important question parents and children should ask is: What do we want to accomplish this summer? Is there a need to strengthen a specific skill or preview a challenging course? Explore the arts or experience hands-on STEM technologies? Learn a new sport or sharpen critical thinking skills?” —Newark Academy Summer Session “Art Camp at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey is the most creative camp around! Campers of all ages are free to use their imaginations and express themselves creatively, all while having fun exploring different art media. The impact of our art camp extends far beyond the summer–studies prove that kids who study art have higher GPAs and SAT scores too!”

—Musical Theatre Conservatory “Have no expectations of where you are going or what is going to happen. Don’t prepare! Do not practice any particular skill set! Purposely travel towards something that is (for this moment) unknown. Coddiwomple is an English Slang word. Look it up and add it to your vocabulary!” —Surf and Turf Camp

—Cassandra Demski, Director of Studio School, Visual Arts Center of New Jersey “We make learning during the summer a fun and positive experience by building each student’s lessons and work around their individual interests and needs. While kids usually prefer to avoid school during the summer, our students look forward to coming into school each day, because they feel good about the work they are doing.”

“Parents can usually tell that their child is ready to try sleepaway camp if their child is asking about it. If they are being pushed by you, they may not be ready. Taking your child on a camp tour will give you a strong sense of their readiness.”

Regular Podiatrist Visits are Key for Patients with Diabetes By Martta Kelly, photo by Dan Epstein

A

lthough Dr. Matthew F. Wachtler sees patients of all ages and ailments in his practice at Cedar Grove Foot & Ankle Specialists, he makes a significant impact on those with diabetes. “It is important,” he says, “that this population visit a podiatrist regularly, just as they would see their primary care doctor.” “In addition to the Dr. Matthew F. Wachtler damage diabetes can inflict on the eyes, kidneys, and cardiovascular system, people need to be aware of the damage to their feet, which can begin as vague, subtle symptoms,” he says. “The end result of this damage, however, can be catastrophic.”

Look slimmer by summer with Fat Freezing. Fat Freezing safely cools the targeted area, causing fat cells to freeze and then be eliminated naturally. See improvement within a few weeks and full results within 90 days.

People with diabetes are at an increased risk for poor circulation and are prone to nerve damage. For these reasons, they should check their feet every day, even if their disease is well-managed. “Any skin changes, cuts, blisters, or slow healing wounds should be reported to their doctor,” he says, “as well as numbness, tingling or abnormal sensations.” Some tips Dr. Wachtler recommends for diabetic patients include daily foot checks, proper exercise, strict diabetes control, annual podiatric examination, and proper fitting footwear. A team approach involving the primary care providers; podiatrists; specialists such as endocrinologists; vascular surgeons; and neurologists are essential to avoid unnecessary complications. “Around 25% of patients with diabetes will suffer a foot ulcer in their lifetime,” Dr. Wachtler says, adding that a foot ulcer is the initial event in more than 85% of diabetic amputations. “Although these statistics are alarming, studies show a decrease in amputations of up to 80% when those with diabetes are treated by a podiatrist. Prevention and early intervention is key.”

Take Charge of Your Child’s A

lthough many children receive a vision screening at school or by their pediatricians, those evaluations aren’t enough to identify vision issues and manage overall vision health. Parents who take a proactive role in their child’s vision health can help identify and correct problems before they impact everyday life. One common issue affecting children is myopia. Better known as nearsightedness, myopia is a condition in which close-up objects appear clear but, at a distance, everything becomes blurry and out of focus. If untreated, over time it can put the eyes at risk for serious vision-threatening conditions including retinal detachment, early cataract development, macular degeneration and glaucoma.

Vision Health There can be significant short-term impacts, too. Nearly 50 percent of children with myopia experience difficulty in the classroom, and 41 percent of parents with myopic children claim their children struggle with everyday activities, according to a study conducted by MetrixLab on behalf of Essilor of America. However, recognizing those struggles as myopia isn’t always easy. Only 41 percent of parents in the study recognized their children were suffering from myopia. If your child is suffering from myopia, look for symptoms such as squinting to see distant objects, like the board in the classroom; sitting too close to the TV or holding books and tablets close when reading; and experiencing eyestrain or headaches.

In addition to monitoring symptoms, you can also take proactive steps to protect your child’s vision health with these tips from Dr. Millicent Knight, a mother, optometrist and senior vice president of customer development for Essilor of America.

Schedule a Comprehensive Eye Exam

Regular comprehensive eye exams are particularly important during childhood when eyes are developing rapidly. The American Optometric Association recommends a first eye examination at 6-12 months of age, at least once between ages 3-5 then at least annually between ages 6-18.

Monitor Screen Time

While technology can be a great tool for learning, all that screen time can lead to digital eyestrain, resulting in tired eyes, headaches, itchy eyes, blurred vision and increased sensitivity to light. To help reduce eyestrain, have children take periodic breaks while using devices and remember to strike a balance between screen time and outdoor time, as studies have shown that kids who play outside may be at a reduced risk of developing vision issues.

Protect Eyes From the Sun

Parents tend to remember sunscreen when children are outdoors, but they sometimes forget eyes are just as important. Children are at heightened risk for retinal damage when outdoors because their pupils, compared to adults, are larger outdoors and the lens inside the eye is clearer, which enables more harmful blue light from the sun to enter into the eye. Encourage kids to stay inside during the sun’s peak hours, and when they do go outside, have them wear sunglasses with both blue light protection and UV protection that blocks UVA and UVB rays.

Aozora

Bon Appétit

Gavin Roll

THE PLACE TO BE FOR JAPANESE FOOD

T

his wonderful spot with creative sushi and delicious kitchen offerings is everything a lover of Japanese food could ask for. If you have never been to Aozora in Montclair, you should definitely give it a try. And if you have been, but not in a while…it is time to come back to this Best of Essex winner. It is nothing short of a treat. Under the management of Ben and Amy Chen, Aozora has become the spot for some of the best Japanese food available in the area, with a number of tasty options available. The spicy Angry Dragon Roll combines spicy tuna, mango, tempura shrimp, and avocado, and is wrapped in a soy/chili paper which is then drizzled with Sriracha sauce. Another innovative creation is the Galaxy Roll, which features spicy kani and avocado with seared salmon on the outside topped with ground peanuts, scallions, and a special sauce of Ben’s invention. Don’t miss the Twister Roll– shrimp tempura and avocado topped with spicy salmon, fresh salmon and Thai mango chili sauce. Though it is not on the menu, Ben happily fills requests for

Hawaii Tuna Tartare, which arrives with chunks of marinated tuna, avocado, slices of orange, and red caviar wasabi. When pressed for their menu favorites, Amy immediately says the Surf & Turf, which includes a generous filet mignon, resting on julienne vegetables, which are atop risotto, and features a generous selection of shrimp and sea scallops. Ben the sushi chef just loves the cheesecake–it is a soft, wonderful individual cake served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, a home-made moon cookie, chocolate sauce and a strawberry garnish. Be sure to save room for it; it is enough to share. Ben, the chef and also the husband in this husband and wife team, has been working in restaurants ever since he came to the US at 16. In fact, it was why a friend set up a blind date for him with Amy, who also worked in an Asian restaurant. The date worked out, the romance blossomed and now, together they run this successful Montclair eatery. Amy’s smile is what greets you when you first arrive. Ben’s domain is the back of the store. While they have continued to offer the favorite dishes that have been bringing satisfied customers back for years, Ben’s innovative artistry behind the sushi bar delights regulars and new customers alike. Stop in to discover–or rediscover– their creative dishes and see why Aozora is truly the place to be for Japanese favorites.

Cocktail Ideas for the Spring Season

W

ith spring around the corner, it is time to start thinking about spring cocktail ideas for parties and get togethers. According to Wine Legend Owner, Mahesh Lekkala, the latest trends are wine cocktails, simple cocktails using finer ingredients, and aged cocktails. Says Lekkala, “Wine cocktails have less alcohol content and pair well with food. Simple Cocktails, made with craft spirits like Botanist Gin, Clase With pre-set dinners served at their wine bar in West Orange on the weekends, you can taste these spring cocktails yourself. “Guests can try our Aged cocktails, fine spirits by the glass, and wine flights,” he says. “Our spirits and cocktails are served over large ice cubes that keep drinks chilled without diluting them!” The store is here is help customers discover drink ideas for any season: “We educate our patrons and give them the opportunity to explore wines, spirits and cocktails the way they are intended to be enjoyed.”

Diamond Minds

When Faith Meets Fear the first time in the beginning of her career she was in Barry Farber front of a handful of drunken patrons at three in the morning. Those times were difficult, but she faced her fears and went on. Not only did she put the worst behind her, she learned something every time she stepped up to that microphone.

“Fear came knocking at the door, faith answered and no one was there.”

realize it’s the reason we start to believe the excuses we make for ourselves. Therefore, the first step in taming any fear is to analyze what is real and what is not. Then dive in and take action.

I

In order to take action, we have to learn to get rid of our fear of failure. Author Tom Peters tells about how he had the privilege of introducing the late Sam Walton, the founder of Walmart, when he was going to be introduced into the sales and marketing executives Hall of Fame.

This is made even more interesting by the fact that Alexander’s armies were always outnumbered, sometimes by as much as twenty to one. But Alexander’s philosophy was to attack so swiftly and move so quickly that his soldiers didn’t have time to be afraid. He knew that fear is the greatest obstacle to success. The more we think about all the possible reasons something won’t work out, the more our fear paralyzes us, and we end up not taking any action at all.

“What can you say in two minutes about a guy like Walton?” says Peters. “During that time, I called David Glass, CEO of Walmart. I said, ‘If you had 90 seconds to say something about Sam Walton, what would you say?’ Quicker than a wink, he answered, ‘Sam Walton is not afraid to fail. He’ll give something a try, he’ll make a total mess of it, and walk back in tomorrow with a smile on his face and another idea.’ It’s that ability to try something, make a mess of it, and get on with the “All great masters are chiefly distinguished next action that allows us to win out over fear.” by the power of adding a second, a third,

—Mark Twain

t took Alexander the Great 10 years– from the time he was 23 to his death at age of 33–to conquer most of the known world. Alexander has been studied and admired throughout the centuries for his incredible willingness and ability to take action in the face of adversity.

Fear blocks more people from achieving their goals. It is the anticipation of negative results, imagination working overtime.
