Palazzo restaurant is located at 11 South Fullerton Avenue in Montclair. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday and dinner on Sunday. Financial Planner Helps Clients
F
inancial Planner Patrick Garcia (pictured), of Wells Fargo Advisors has seen his fair share of investment mistakes. Most mistakes are avoidable, and can be traced back to poor investor behavior. “People will run out of money in retirement because they were too conservatively invested in 20 or 30 years of a rising-cost retirement, but virtually no one will ever run out of money because they chose the wrong fund or manager.” With basic behavioral mistakes so prevalent among investors, Garcia helps clients behave in a way that they do not underperform their own investments. “Sometimes the greatest advice I give is to say ‘Don’t do that!’ to a client about to make a classic blunder. I know what the classic mistakes are, I can observe them forming in my client’s mind, and I am willing to stand in empathetic opposition when they want to commit these errors.” Garcia attributes his success to his ability to develop relationships with his clients based on mutual trust. Good advice is only effective if the client accepts it.” Patrick Garcia’s office is located in Florham Park. For more information on Patrick and his business, please call 973-301-8381.

First Annual Montclair Food and Wine Festival
O
n June 1st and 2nd, 2013, Montclair will host its first Montclair Food and Wine Festival. The event, which has been years in the making, will feature events that include samplings of the area’s finest cuisine and wines from across the globe and will be held at the Woman’s Club of Upper Montclair. “Montclair has long been considered the ‘unofficial’ food capital of New Jersey, so we’re thrilled that lovers of food, wine and spirits will be able to gather here for two days of exceptional food and wine-tasting experiences,” festival founder Melody Kettle stated. “After working on this project for nearly two years, it’s gratifying to see it become a reality.” The weekend’s events will include live Jazz and cocktails along with the weekend’s two main events, The Grand Tasting on Saturday and the Wine Pairing Gala on Sunday. Tickets are available through the festival’s page on www.Eventbrite.com. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital Center for Feeding and Swallowing, to the Partners for Health Foundation, as well as put toward the establishment of a scholarship benefitting exemplary students aiming to further their culinary education. Local Electrician Marks 50 Years in Business
n 1963 brothers Edward & Michael O’Hara founded E&M O’Hara in the basement of their mother’s home, with the mission, “To provide expert electrical service at competitive prices.” Since that day 50 years ago, much has changed. The company now occupies locations in West Orange, Livingston and Verona, and employs a team of highly trained and licensed electricians. However, their mission remains unchanged. Even after Michael O’Hara’s 2009 passing, the company is still family owned and operated. Kelly Ann Daly, Edward’s daughter, serves as the CFO and Treasurer, while her brother, Edward, Jr., supervises their team of expert electricians as VP of Operations. With Edward, Sr. as President and CEO, the O’Haras and their staff uphold their original promise and offer new, state-of-the-art services, including online appointment requests and 24-hour emergency services, all with quality of service in mind. “We are proud to be family owned and operated for 50 years,” Kelly Ann states. “We pride ourselves on customer satisfaction and the fact that all customers, old and new, are given the best quality of service possible.” E&M O’Hara is located at 144 Main Street in West Orange. Their office staff can be reached by calling 973-325-3626 or by visiting www.oharaelectric.com.

Enjoy the Warm Days Ahead with These Popular Ideas for Decks & Patios
T
o wipe away the chilly memories of winter, think of relaxing or entertaining in your outdoor living area in the summer days ahead. To get started with your “hardscaping” plans, here’s a look at the most popular materials available for decks, patios and other structures and some advice from the experts.
paTios and WalkWays When selecting a material for a patio or walkway, let the style of your house and the surrounding houses guide you. older, more traditional houses, especially those in established neighborhoods, usually look best with patios and walkways made from natural brick or natural stone because they complement the materials used on the house.

“pattern flagstones cut from bluestone and sandstone allow for a wide variety of customizable paving options for terraces and walkways,” says glenn albrecht, senior project architect of Wesketch architecture of Millington, who has noticed an increased return to natural products for landscaping and decking. “The colors of natural stone will remain steadfast for millennia, and each piece has its own unique color and pattern created by the forces of nature,” albrecht says. adds anthony cortese owner of cortese Masons, “With a good mason’s touch, natural stone materials can add an artistic quality to a space.”
The latest dirt on spring gardening
M
By Fran J. Donegan
ay is a good time to finish up spring maintenance chores in the garden. it’s time to add mulch and compost to beds. it’s time to deadhead spring bulbs; to begin hardening off transplants for final planting later in the month; and to plant colorful annuals.
Houses with a more modern design can benefit from the look of interlocking pavers in colors that work well with the siding materials on the house as well as with the surrounding plantings. according to cortese, these pavers are a good choice for homeowners looking for a simple, but warm, patio alternative. “pavers are made from a concrete-like substance and come in all shapes, colors and sizes,” he says, “and when installed properly can be very durable as well.”
all decked ouT
if a new deck is in your plans, there are a many materials from which to choose: chip schneider of West essex Building supply of Verona says that for customers who choose composite decking, he recommends TimberTech, with its 25-year no-fade, no-stain warranty on most colors. TimberTech comes in an assortment of colors, designs and rail patterns. “lately, i find customers choosing walnut and rosewood—a definite focus on the darker colors,” schneider says. Wesketch’s architect glenn albrecht sees an increased return to natural wood. “We are seeing more use of cedar, mahogany, and ipe, a tropical hardwood. The softness to the touch, unique grain patterns from piece to piece and subtle color variations are unmatchable.” “an added bonus”, he says, “is that when obtained from Fsc (Forest stewardship council) certified, sustainable forests, natural wood is a renewable resource whose use is environmentally responsible.” s
in the past, many homeowners relied on flats of colorful, easy-to-grow impatiens for summer-long blooms, but they may be difficult to find this year. impatiens have been struck by a blight called downy mildew, which forms a residue on the leaves, causing them to curl and drop. if you do decide to include impatiens in your garden this year, make sure they come from reputable growers who follow strict disease-control protocols. “Because some garden centers will not carry regular impatiens this year, i recommend substituting annual or perennial vinca,” says Ted cox, owner of the cedar grove garden center. “They look somewhat like impatiens,” he adds, “and deer will usually avoid them.” With the deer population on the rise, anne Fahey, a horticulturalist, garden designer and owner of anne Fahey garden design and consulting of essex Fells, recommends planting such deer-resistant flowers as peonies, catmint and coreopsis. “For annuals, i recommend cosmos, which also attract beneficial insects, as well as cleome, salvias, wax begonias and ageratum.” Hydrangeas, a popular addition to many gardens, blossom beautifully when pruned correctly. ron lang of garden Masters in glen ridge recommends pruning right after flowering to get the best results for the next blooming season. He also suggests considering the new hybrid hydrangea called Endless Summer™. “These plants bloom in late spring through early fall on old and new wood,” lang says. “you can prune them any way or any time, and they will still bloom.” s May 2013

PARK STREET AUTO Car Service Fueled by the Golden Rule
A
utomotive repair businesses thrive on solid, trustworthy reputations. Many car owners are distrustful of mechanics, so finding one who is honest and dependable is extremely important to both the car owner and to the life and maintenance of the vehicle. At Park Street Auto in Montclair, owners and husband-and-wife team Joe and Ruth Bollo have spent more than 15 years building their business and earning their clients’ confidence. “Our honesty, integrity and our ‘old school’ values and morals of ‘service honoring the golden rule’ are key,” Ruth explains. Since opening at its present location in 1995, the Bollos have worked hard to maintain the highest level of integrity, backed by Joe’s long history in repair and maintenance. Having worked in his uncle’s repair shop for 15 years immediately following high school, Joe thought it was time to branch out on his own. “I wanted to be my own boss,” Joe says.
Joe Bollo
“It’s hard work. I have to be here every day due to the fact that we make the business.” “He felt with his extensive automotive training and work experience and my knowledge of business, advertising and public relations, we could make our business a success,” Ruth adds. The Bollos work with two additional employees and provide the full range of services, including maintenance checks, oil changes, brake and transmission service and tune-ups on all automotive makes and models, in addition to being a New Jersey State Inspection Station and an Emissions Repair Facility. The Bollos have experienced a Ruth and Joe Bollo lot of industry changes and economic challenges since they began serving customer, but they have adapted throughout the years to keep current and provide the best service. “There are computers in cars and a lot more electronics,” says Joe. “When classes are offered, we send our mechanics to school about once a month. We didn’t have to do that years ago.” Explains Ruth, “Because of the amount of computers and electronics

“Our honesty, integrity and our ‘old school’ values and morals of ‘service honoring the golden rule’ are key.” –Ruth Bollo made this an asset to Park Street Auto. “It’s hard sometimes to keep a balance between your business and personal life,” says Ruth. “You can’t just turn off a switch when it comes to the responsibilities of owning a business. BERT TOBIA
Volunteers His Time to Bond Education with Strong Work Ethics
G
rowing up in Newark decades ago in “a family without means,” as he puts it, Bert Tobia attended Essex Catholic High School. The education he received there set him on course for future success; today he is a tax accountant with a thriving practice in Fairfield. Grateful for the opportunity and wishing to help other students of limited financial means, the West Caldwell resident now serves as a trustee of Christ the King Preparatory School in Newark. Christ the King, located in North Newark, is part of the nationwide Cristo Rey Network of Catholic Schools. Only seven years old, the school has already compiled some impressive statistics: 100% graduation rates and over $4 million in college scholarships received by each of the first two graduating classes. Equally impressive, Christ the King has already been recommended for full Middle States Accreditation, remarkably early for a new school. The secret to Christ the King’s success, according to Tobia, is its unusual two-pronged approach. On one hand, the school offers a rigorous academic curriculum aimed at preparing its students to succeed in college, as well as the school’s emphasis on strong character development. At the same time, it sends its students into the working world five days each month in order to expose them to different types of employment and to help instill in students a strong work ethic. Students might spend a year working at a hospital and the next year at a law firm and the next in a corporate setting, for example, learning to adapt to different environments and seeing what type of work they might want to do after college. This system is the result of powerful arrangements between Christ the King and its corporate sponsors. For the labor provided by the students, each corporation pays a certain amount of money to the school, which then applies it to the students’ tuition. As a member of the Development Committee, Tobia spends a lot of time trying to find jobs for students. He also is involved with the school’s two major fundraisers: The President’s Gala at the Newark Club and Casino Night at the Newark Museum. Thanks to this financial arrangement, students pay, on average, less than $1,500 per year in tuition while gaining valuable experience and contacts in the professional world. They also develop, according to Tobia,
Bert Tobia
“wonderful self-confidence and self-esteem.” In order to succeed in a work environment, all new students attend a three-week “boot camp,” where they are taught all of the skills necessary to work efficiently and competently in any entry-level position including reception work, filing, scanning, mailroom work and more. They are also taught the entire Microsoft Office Suite, as well as coaching in proper hygiene, office protocols, manners and office attire. These students, Tobia points out, are not what would be considered the “cream of the crop”, as many entering freshman perform at below-grade levels. Most students come from Newark and neighboring cities Orange, East Orange and Irvington. Tobia notes, “We’re looking for the child that most schools want to throw away.” Tobia is one of the three (out of 19) trustees who is an alumnus of Essex Catholic High School. Since his alma mater closed down in the early 2000s, he and his fellow alumni have essentially adopted Christ the King as their own. He concludes, “We want poor inner-city kids to have the same opportunities we did.” s

Taking Care of THe Skin Soon you’ll be shedding your bulky winter wardrobe for t-shirts, tanks and shorts, exposing your body’s largest organ—your skin. While protecting it from the sun is especially critical during the warmer months, keeping it healthy all year long is just as important. Here we give you the low-down on cleansers, scrubs, facials and more—from the tried-and-true to what’s new.
Clean, Exfoliate, Moisturize and More
M
ost of us use bar soaps, many of which contain sodium lauryl sulfate, which tends to strip away moisture and dry out the skin. For supple skin, try cleansers that contain such ingredients as ceramides, hyaluronic acid, glycerin and plant-based oils, which help to retain the skin’s natural oils, hold onto water or provide much-needed moisture. Removing dead skin cells through body polishing— or exfoliation—also promotes healthy skin by allowing the growth of new skin cells for a clearer, smoother look. exfoliate once or twice a week with hydrating, alcohol-free products that contain glycolic, lactic or salicylic acid (the last also can help prevent breakouts). you can use at-home, over-the-counter microdermabrasion kits as well. When it comes to moisturizing, many creams and lotions are multi-purposed, with elements like shea butter, dimethicone, alpha hydroxy acids and broad-spectrum sunscreens that lock in moisture and prevent dryness, while sloughing off dead skin cells and protecting against uVa and uBa rays. One new ingredient to the moisturizer recipe is hexamidine, which has been used to lock dampness in the lining of disposable diapers.

You’re in Still, with all the products available these days, many triedand-true skin care options remain. among them are petroleum jelly (commonly known as Vaseline) and aloe vera. Petroleum jelly is oil-based and can serve as a daily moisturizer or as a lubricant to soothe dry skin. aloe vera also benefits dry skin, but goes further to help heal rashes, burns, insect bites and superficial wounds, and may even offer anti-aging properties that stimulate collagen and lighten dark spots.

ealthy skin can also be bolstered through professionally administered treatments like facials and chemical peels. Facials typically involve cleansing, exfoliation, extraction of blemishes, massage, mask application and moisturizing. Products used are based on your skin type and the effects you seek. Some of the most popular facials include collagen and alpha hydroxy acid—the first to hydrate the skin and help prevent dark circles and wrinkles, and the second to smooth the skin, tighten pores and lighten dark spots. aromatherapy facials employ essential oils that draw out toxins and rejuvenate the skin, while antioxidant facials use creams that fight damaging free radicals and protect the skin against environmental pollutants. you might want to try an oxygen facial, which delivers hyperbaric or pure oxygen through an airbrush to cleanse pores, increase circulation and plump the skin without any redness afterward. There are even facials that utilize products containing pure gold, found to improve the lymphatic system and cell regeneration and enhance skin softness and elasticity. Chemical peels also vary by skin type, but all essentially apply acid to remove the top-most skin cells to reveal newer, brighter ones, so you can expect some degree of shedding. Glycolic and lactic peels are mild with minimal side effects, but because they don’t go very deep, you may need more than one to achieve your desired effect. Peels that go deeper, such as trichloroacetic and phenol, can reduce wrinkles as well, but may cause increased sensitivity to sunlight and blotchy bleaching of the skin. If you have pigmentation problems, you might want to consider the relatively new Melanage™ peel, during which a medicated mask is applied by an aesthetician to be removed later by you, followed by a strict at-home regimen. Melanage™ not only lightens dark spots, but can also have a positive impact on texture, tone, fine lines and collagen production. s

The “Eyes” Have It at Roseland Eye Care Focus, Fit and Fashion-Forward...
G
o ahead—ask Kurt Behrle, founder and owner of Roseland Eye Care, any question about the history of the eyewear industry. Whether your question concerns 2013 eyeglass fashion trends or modern advancements in lens technology, he will answer you with the same precision he and his staff utilize for every pair of glasses they create. Is it any wonder that Roseland Eye Care has been so successful in providing a full range of optometrist services and a distinctive collection of frames and state-of-the-art lenses for 29 years? As Behrle says, “We pride ourselves on individual attention and giving our valued clientele a fashionable and different variety of upscale frames—and ones that will accommodate every budget.” Additionally, constructing lenses, whether clear, tinted, single-vision, bi-focal or polarized, is a top priority for Behrle’s professional onsite staff of four licensed opticians. “We have a wonderful staff with an excellent knowledge of the latest lens technology.” To aid in this process, Roseland Eye Care has incorporated Visi-Office inot their practice. According to Behrle, his piece of equipment is the most accurate measuring device made. “The

latest lens technology is not available without the measurement taken with this device,” he explains. “The Visi-Office will also take pictures and videos of patients trying on frames so they can see how they look in them. IT also has the ability of emailing the pictures.” Behrle reports that the feedback from customers is remarkable. With summer right around the corner, a fashion trend for men and women is the everpopular plastic frame. Often available in bolder colors, their pops of color appear in the updated versions of client favorites such as Ray Ban’s for clear lenses or sunglasses. For women, the cat eye shape, or “cubic” look, and wayfarers—a retro-look from the 1950’s—as well as classic aviators, are all the rage. Leopard spots, animal prints, embellishments at the temple area, decorative art in the arm of the frame and the pairing of plastic with metal produce endless combinations of tasteful frames that complement every facial silhouette. Although what’s popular in men’s eyeglasses changes much less frequently than women’s eyeglasses, vintage-inspired details like studded hinge screws, translucent rims, variations on the rectangular, the “geek chic” look and “the nerd”
style are very popular with men. Citing Roseland Eye Care’s signature popularity, Behrle points out, “We have the hot designers that conventional eyeglass chains do not carry, such as the Japanese designer Masunaga, Oliver Peoples, David Yurman and Judith Leiber.” Behrle also points out the wide selection of what he describes as “beautiful budget collections” allowing eyeglass wearers of all budgets to take advantage of Roseland Eye Care’s vast collection. Trunk shows and philanthropy are important at Roseland Eye Care as well. Every trunk show becomes a welcomed event that includes an afternoon of refreshments for the entire family. Ten per cent of all proceeds are donated to local charities. Juvenile Diabetes and Rhett Syndrome are two of the most recent recipients. With characteristic enthusiasm, Behrle sums up his winning philosophy, “We’ve grown to know our customers and our customers have grown to know us. For every individual, there’s a right fit and frame. And whatever that is, we will find it for you.” s Roseland Eye Care 178 Eagle Rock Avenue, Roseland 973-228-2424

POSE FOR A CURE
Portraits Add Meaning to Mother’s Day
Photos by Dan Epstein
CAPTURING FAMILIES & THEIR FEELINGS THROUGH PHOTOGRAPHY
D
an Epstein, senior photographer for Suburban Essex and Vicinity Magazines, will be hosting his ninth annual Pose for a Cure fundraiser on Saturday, May 11, from 9:30am to 5pm at Shag 86 salon in Little Falls. The event gives mothers and their children an opportunity to pose for portraits with a professional photographer, while simultaneously benefitting cancer research. In lieu of a sitting fee, Epstein asks that participants bring a check for any amount they wish, made to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, which focuses on breast cancer research.
Gerald Ferraro and Dan Epstein
Once again this event will be in honor of Mother’s Day, in memory of Dan’s mother, whom he lost to breast cancer in 1990—as well as to all affected by this disease. Shag 86, located at 86 Main Street in Little Falls, has graciously offered their salon as a venue for the event. “People really get a charge out of the event,” Epstein states. “It surprises me because when I first started this event, I thought people would be signing up just to have a portrait taken with their kids, but so many of them—an overwhelming number—actually signed up because they had a first-or second-hand experience with the disease. The issue really spoke to them.” “My staff and I are happy to be able to help Dan out,” states Shag86 owner Gerald Ferraro, “I’ll do anything to support this cause and am glad to support Dan with this event.” In addition to the Shag86 support, North Jersey Woman magazine will be sponsoring a contest entitled, Pose for a Cure with North Jersey Woman. A gallery of portraits on the magazine’s website will allow visitors to vote on their favorite. The winner will be awarded with a prize package, and the chosen portrait will be featured in an upcoming issue of North Jersey Woman magazine. To be included in the Pose for a Cure event, reservations are required by contacting Shag86 at 973-837-0086 prior to May 11. Please make your donation by check to Susan G. Komen for the Cure ahead and bring it to your sitting. In addition to this Mother’s Day event, Epstein will be holding a Father’s Day Pose for a Cure event on June 15, also held at Shag 86. On that date, fathers will have an opportunity to pose with their children. To see samples of Dan Epstein’s work please visit www.danepstein.com. May 2013

HAVE YOU HEARD By Naomi Kenan
The Sunniest Advice
B
Tasty Trend: Eating Local
efore you slather on the sunscreen, soak up about 10 minutes of sun. Shocked? That’s the latest advice from many doctors, who say that lack of pure sunshine may be the prime reason that so many of us don’t get enough Vitamin D. The number of people lacking this vitamin has doubled in the past decade. And the “sunshine” vitamin helps us absorb calcium, along with its many other health benefits. Why are so many more people lacking in Vitamin D? Experts say it’s because we spend more time indoors, and then spritz on loads of sunscreen before stepping out, in a wise move to ward off skin cancer and wrinkles. Sunscreen is vital, especially in the summer. But 10-15 minutes of sun isn’t likely to give you anything but a jolt of unadulterated joy—and plenty of Vitamin D. Just avoid the tanning salon and the “mad dog and Englishman” hours of 10am-2pm, when the sun is strongest. Can’t take the sun? Enjoy foods high in Vitamin D, such as fatty fish and fortified milk, or pop an over-the-counter supplement.
Are You, Uh, Stopped Up?
I
t’s not the most pleasant of topics, but the fact is that nearly everyone will experience constipation at some point—and millions of Americans suffer from this miserable condition chronically. If you’re one of them, ask your doctor about a relatively new, over-the-counter drug called MiraLax (active ingredient: polyethylene glycol). It’s a Consumer Reports “Best Buy” because it’s safe, effective, well tolerated—and doesn’t contain the harsh stimulants of many laxatives. Meds containing senna or bisacodyl are powerful—and good as short-term solutions. But over time, they can cause your system to stop working on its own, relying instead on the drugs. To prevent the problem in the first place, drink plenty of water and eat a fiber-rich diet of veggies, fruits, whole grains, legumes, and beans. If you need more help, try fiber supplements (those with psyllium work best). Exercise also helps get you… going.
S
top by a farmers’ market or pick locally grown produce at the supermarket. You’ll be helping out local farmers, of course, but you’re also likely to get more nutrients in fresh, locally grown fruits and veggies. And because the produce is grown specifically for your area, it doesn’t need preservatives to keep it fresh during long road trips and weeks on the supermarket shelf. Oh, and to no one’s surprise, in an unofficial poll most people say that fresh, locally grown food simply tastes better. No farms in your town? No problem. “Local” is defined as anywhere within 150 miles of home. For more information, visit eatlocal.net, 100milediet.org, eatlocalchallenge.com, or greenerchoices.org.

DIAMOND MINDS By Barry Farber
BUILDING A CHAMPION PART 3
An interview with New York Giants quarterback Scott Brunner (Continued from the April edition)
BARRY FARBER: When winners are in pressure situations they have an ability to come through. They have confidence that’s built over the long term that gives them the foundation to perform when the game is on the line. How do you develop that skill and ability? SCOTT BRUNNER: We tell our guys to be oblivious to the obvious. BF: Can you explain that? SB: There are a lot of obvious things happening in a game. Let’s say you fall behind by three touchdowns; you’re not going to come back from that all in one play. So you have to be oblivious to the fact that you’re down by three touchdowns and focus on the process that allows you to succeed. We continually reinforce the process, validate their execution and therefore validate their success. BF: Let’s talk about leadership from the QB’s perspective. SB: Football is probably the most interdependent sport of all. You’re not only dealing with
yourself and your own performance, you’re dealing with the performance of 10 other guys on the field. If one guy makes a mistake or misses a block, the whole team suffers. It requires a lot of coordination. The great players are the ones who put the team on their backs and carry them to places they didn’t think they could go as individuals. BF: How do they do that? SB: It takes some maturity to develop that leadership style and the leadership qualities that will inspire other people to follow you. That’s why young guys sometimes have a difficult time doing that. Leadership is also about respect and that involves being competent and knowledgeable; this also takes time to develop and earn your team’s respect. Good leadership also means being a good follower. A strong quarterback hands the ball off 30, 40, 50% of the time—so other people are going to be responsible for carrying the load of the team. You have to feel comfortable
Barry Farber
handing the ball off to somebody else who will end up taking control, and not feel like you have to control every situation. That’s where the great ones excel because that’s how they inspire other people. BF: So true. You’re building trust in your people when you encourage them and delegate versus the leader who has to do everything himself and conveys to his people that he doesn’t trust their abilities. You’ve shared a lot of great information that can be applied to all aspects of performance in sports, business, and life in general: • Aim small, miss small to really hone a skill and hit your targets more accurately. • The value of preparation cannot be understated. • Vision and Decision—the ability to see the field of play and implement nimbly—is something we can all improve on. Great leaders surround themselves with people they can hand the ball off to and trust their ability to get the job done.

Star Tavern
A LEGEND BUILT ON PIZZA
W
hen I spoke to the friend and fellow foodie whom I planned on inviting to be my guest for this review, I asked him if he knew the Star Tavern. I should have known better. Only good manners kept him from scoffing as he replied, “How can you live in this area and not know the Star Tavern?” Asked what accounts for the continuing popularity of this neighborhood restaurant, which has thrived since owner Gary Vayianos’s father Aristotelis took ownership in 1980, Vayianos admits with a laugh, “It’s a little scary.” Even he was surprised to discover that shortly after being put on Facebook, the Star attracted 4,400 “likes.” But Vayianos adds, “I would have to say that consistency has a lot to do with our popularity.” Consistency here relates not only to the food—especially the outstanding thin-crust pizza—but also to the familiar faces of the waitstaff, some of whom have been with the Star for over 30 years.
While deciding on our own pizza order, we tucked into our first dish, Mussels Marinara, $8.50, featuring plump and tender mussels in a hefty, but not overbearing, tomato-based garlic lovers’ sauce that was underscored with a nice zing. Grilled Portobello and Eggplant, $9.25, was a piping hot dish consisting of thin layers of baked eggplant, portabello and roasted pepper, topped with mozzarella and Romano cheeses. A house specialty, the generous and tasty $11.25 homemade lasagna, is still a popular offering among diners. In the early days of the 80s, when Aristotelis Vayianos took over the Star, the only items on the menu besides pizza were roast beef sandwiches, meatball sandwiches, hamburgers and eggplant parmigiana. So with a tip of the hat to history, we ordered the eggplant parm, $10.75, and found this nicely presented classic offering to be an eggplant lovers’ delight. Now came the Star attractions: a selection of almost a dozen pizzas, ranging from the $9.95 regular—which Vayianos considers to be the Star’s signature pizza—to the $14.50 pesto, the $$14.50 white clam sauce and the $15 “Everything.” As a bonus for today’s health-conscious diners, Vayianos offers the option of a whole wheat crust on any pizza. We opted first to enjoy the $13.50 eggplant pizza, with its typical thin crust and nicely browned edges. Pesto pizza, $14.50, made with pignola nuts and basil and cut with a little red sauce, was outstanding, as was the almost legendary $14.50 White Clam Sauce pizza, a secret recipe handed down from Vayianos’s father. Delicious as always, and even better with the dribbling of lemon wedge recommended by Vayianos—“brings it alive,” raved my guest about this unusual winner. Although coffee is still not available, the Star offers a new and winning pizza finale to the menu: apple pie pizza, $6.95, topped with thinly sliced apple rings sprinkled with cinnamon—a don’t-miss way to end your evening at the Star Tavern, a warm and welcoming neighborhood place that continues to withstand the test of time.
