Inside ESSEX Full Bar Service Arrives at FIN Raw Bar & Kitchen

Your Gateway to the East

M

ontclair-goers rejoice: There’s a new bar in town at local seafood restaurant, FIN Raw Bar & Kitchen. Now featuring a full liquor license, FIN clientele can sip cocktails at the bar, socialize around cocktail tables, or enjoy their favorite drink during dinner. FIN has been operating as a BYO restaurant for the past five years, offering light, clean fare with a focus on sustainability and seasonal quality. The addition of a full bar will not affect FIN’s BYO policy, nor will there be any corkage fees for guests who would like to bring their own. Additionally, in the next few months, a sister restaurant will be opening up next door—an 8,500 sq. ft. indoor/outdoor Gastropub to be exact. The Gastropub will offer 48 beers on tap, craft small batch distillery cocktails, and a full “gastropub” style menu. Alongside the introduction of the new establishment, which is targeted for late summer, both restaurants, as well as Salute Brick Oven Bistro (another sister restaurant down the street) will be offering valet parking. Creative Hub Flourishes in Montclair {verdigreen}: part vintage-furnishings boutique, part DIY destination By Deborah Schapiro, photo by Dan Epstein

W

hen Azie Shelhorse moved to Montclair from Atlanta in 2012, she was a stay-at-home mother of two young children who enjoyed painting furniture and selling it on the arts-and-crafts website Etsy. At some point, though, she says, “Enough people were buying my items that it became too difficult to manage as just a hobby.” Shelhorse and her husband originally conceived of 182 Glenridge Avenue in Montclair as a great location for a studio where she could continue to paint furniture. Seeking a like-minded community, they decided to use the space to showcase local artists as well. Since its October 2013 opening, {verdigreen} has become a multipurpose creative destination. The original premise has blossomed into full-scale art gallery nights and music nights. Shelhorse views these “Free Fridays” as more a party than a sales event: “We’ve had jazz trios and the Opera Theatre of Montclair perform, and we always offer food and wine from local vendors. Everything is free; I don’t even like to open the cash register on Free Fridays.” Now also a boutique, {verdigreen} sells vintage home goods ranging from furniture to lighting fixtures. The shop also carries an extensive line of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® and Soft Wax. Shelhorse explains, “This paint is not meant for chalk boards; it’s called chalk paint because of its chalk-like matte finish. It’s nontoxic, water-based, easy to use and gives beautiful results. You can literally use it on different fabrics as well as on furniture.” She uses this paint in the work she does for commercial and residential clients. The versatile {verdigreen} also has become a resource for those wanting custom finishes but don’t have the time or the inclination to do it themselves. Instructor

as well as a crafter and entrepreneur, Shelhorse teaches classes in furniture painting, decoupage, papier-mache and more. The center also offers Mommyand-Me classes as well as Ladies’ Nights Out.

So successful has {verdigreen} become that as of last April, Shelhorse opened a second location in New York City’s East Village. While it too has become quite successful, she has no intention of closing the original: “I would never want to close the original {verdigreen} unless I were retiring. The Montclair shop is my happy place.”

Cedar Hill Golf & Country Club adds Mini-Spa Days, DJ’s, Guest Chefs, Live Entertainment and more!

L

ivingston’ s Cedar Hill is leading the way in transforming country club life into a full social and lifestyle experience for area residents—golfer and non-golfers alike.

Club president Jeff Feldman states, “We are really excited about our new line-up of activities, programs and events. Our new general manager has been putting together a full calendar that adults and the entire family will enjoy, including Ladies Night Out, Drive-In Movie Night for Kids, Poker & Cigar Nights and much more.” Already known for it’s championship 18-hole golf course, Cedar Hill has Har-tru tennis courts and a heated swimming pool complex where great summer parties are already planned. Events make Cedar Hill an easy place to meet new people and make great connections that can last a lifetime. Last year Cedar Hill unveiled it’s newly renovated bar, lounge and dining rooms. Drawing rave reviews, these renovations make the club a perfect venue to meet friends before and after dinner. Cedar Hill is a private club whose members enjoy an upscale atmosphere with a relaxed dress code. Club members feel like time spent there is like therapy. “Every time we come to Cedar Hill, it’s like being on vacation. There’s nothing like dining on the patio with the scenic sunsets overlooking the golf course.” — Terri A., 5 year member

“The Dining membership alone is fantastic… Great, fresh food prepared the way you like it—convenient, no cleaning up, no tipping—just sign your account number!” — Noreen P., 15-year member Recognizing that society’s needs have changed, today people have different priorities and time constraints. Cedar Hill now offers different membership levels so people can choose the plan that best fits their lifestyle, whether they golf or not. Feldman continues, “I encourage anyone who wants to have fun, and could use a break from everyday rigors, to bring their friends and family to visit Cedar Hill. Now is the best time to explore membership. We welcome everyone to call or go online to learn more and register for a free one day guest pass.”

Create That Wonder Wall

C

ustom Designed founder Steven Goffman has been creating award-winning remodels for more than 20 years. One of his most popular requests currently is for wall units/home entertainment centers. His tips for a great project outcome include: • Choose a designer who asks immediately, “What do you want to get out of this space?” Today’s top designers listen to what homeowners wants and design accordingly. Glass shelves and lighting can be used skillfully to showcase art objects or a special book collection in a custom wall unit. • Choose a designer who will supervise the entire job personally.

Goffman notes, “If I need to recommend a subcontractor, they work for me, which simplifies everything for the homeowner.” • Be aware there is often no need to purchase a new flat-screen TV for a home entertainment unit. If the homeowner is happy with their current television, Goffman works with installers to ensure it is re-installed correctly and works perfectly. • Consider that many types of materials are available today that can reduce the cost of a remodel. Goffman often combines melamine board with wood for a look that is luxe for less.

Wash Away Winter Grime

M

onths of harsh weather conditions can take their toll on your home and outdoor features. Often all it takes to get these items spruced up and ready for spring is a serious scrubbing with little more than a pressure washer to remove dirt and grime. When you gear up to wash away the winter, take stock of the entire outdoor area to make your plan of attack: Windows and siding. Storm after storm leaves plenty of dirty residue on your home’s exterior, glass surfaces and exterior walls alike. Before you begin, inspect windows and siding for dents, gaps or holes that may allow water to enter. Using a pressure washer with second-story capabilities is a smart solution. Exercise caution, as too much water pressure can damage windows, seals and siding.

Driveways, decks and patios. Before you can identify damage and make repairs, it’s a good idea to thoroughly clean the surface. Use a power washer in high-pressure mode, starting at a distance and moving closer until the desired effect is achieved. Grills. Nothing signals warmer weather like the smell of dinner on the grill. Get ready for your taste of the new season by scrubbing away months of buildup. For gas grills, disconnect the tank and any electric lines before you begin. Open the hood, remove the grates and treat the entire grill with a degreasing solution, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Work from the top down to rinse away residue. Let the grill dry thoroughly and coat it with a nonstick oil to prevent future build-up. Outdoor furniture, planters and playthings. Left outdoors, patio furniture, planters and children’s outdoor play sets

AIR CONDITIONING

acquire layers of dust and grime during months of disuse. A power washer with variable nozzle settings allows you to safely transition from heavy-duty cleaning to more items such as glass-top tables and light-weight chairs, flower pots and toys without damaging or blasting these items across the yard. With a little elbow grease and the proper tools, you’ll quickly find your home’s exterior fresh and ready to enjoy for another season outdoors. Outdoor Lighting Placement

We Specialize in Making Old Homes New & Newer Homes Better

W

hile lighting can be placed virtually anywhere, some locations should not be overlooked. A well-lit path is both welcoming and provides illumination that extends hospitality to visitors and makes walking more secure. Using downlights on pathways will prevent glare. Individually lit pavers can also be used to light a pathway. Steps should be lighted for safety; either risers or the treads can be lit. And, each entry to the house should have lights either placed on each side of the door or overhead. Lighting can be used to illuminate specific task areas on a deck or patio, such as a kitchen, as well as railings and seating areas. Uplighting, which is harder to accomplish outside, can be used on a deck or patio to send light upward on an umbrella or deck “ceiling” for an indirect effect. Lighting is a good way to highlight an interesting built element in the outdoor landscape such as a gazebo, pergola or trellis.

How Do I Clean…? Local Cleaning Expert Shares Her Wisdom in New Book By Vanice Gage Donegan, photo by Dan Epstein

A

t first, it might appear that Ruth Bollo’s passion is cleaning. Yes, she has operated a successful cleaning service for 30 years. Yes, she also has a cleaning consulting business, Clean It Right. Yes, she finds cleaning both enjoyable and therapeutic. All that being true, however, Bollo’s real passion lies with helping people. She loves to share her battle-tested knowledge about cleaning with others. For example, Bollo’s local adult school cleaning classes start with a lecture that soon morphs into a problem-solving session with students. She listens to them describe the ink stains on their sofas and mildew on their siding. Taking notes, she researches solutions

after class and gives personalized advice. Sometimes Bollo even calls to follow-up on how things worked out. Driven by her need to reach even a larger audience, last year Bollo decided to write a book that distills her years of cleaning experience. And so “Clean It Right, The Proper Art of Cleaning” was conceived. Bollo soon learned that writing and polishing her guide is as challenging as getting motor oil out of silk. Working with a local designer and editor, Ruth spent most of 2015 writing, proofreading, rewriting and proofreading again. By December, she finally held her labor of love in her hands.

Ruth Bollo

The book is being promoted and for sale all over Essex County, in doctor’s offices, restaurants, gift shops and bookstores as well as via online outlets. Bollo is proud to continue helping people make things sparkle, one clean home at a time.

Newark Exhibition: Maker City

7-TIME WINNER!

As the United States industrialized in the early 18th century, Newark grew to become one of the leading industrial centers of the country. Newark’s main areas of manufacture were leather, beer and precious metals. However, many other kinds of goods were produced in workshops and factories throughout the city. For example, Franklin Murphy, one of the Newark Museum’s founding trustees, was a varnish manufacturer. Everything from carriages, automobiles, furniture, pearl buttons, silk stockings, tools and machinery was produced here as well. Tiffany & Co. opened an enormous factory in Newark’s North Ward, in 1894, and by 1929 it and other Newark workshops were producing 90 percent of the gold jewelry made in America.

New Directions: Dannielle Tegeder

Raised in a family of steamfitters, including her father, Brooklyn-based artist Dannielle Tegeder is fascinated by architecture, urbanism, and engineering, which inspire her abstract drawings, paintings, installations, and animations. The Laurie Art Staircase installation will comprise wall drawings and sculptural elements, and will explore how that space, with its vast glass wall facing onto both the Museum grounds and the distant Manhattan skyline, melds together the inside and outside of the Museum building. Intended to be viewed as much from the exterior as from the interior, the installation will reference MAM’s architecture, as well as its engineering systems, such as HVAC, wiring, and plumbing, hidden behind its walls.

For over 20 years Chris Frieman has created custom homes, additions and renovations in the Essex County area. He pays close attention to detail and makes sure all of his projects exceed the expectations of his clients. New Homes • Additions Alterations • Kitchens • Baths

This installation will be complemented by two new video animations that Tegeder is creating for the video monitors on MAM’s grounds. Using the same abstract vocabulary as the Laurie work, these videos will further unite the Museum’s interior spaces with its surrounding landscape. This exhibition is also part of MAM’s New Directions series, the centerpiece of our contemporary art program. New Directions was founded in 2011 to engage the community with new work that is at once accessible and thought provoking. On view from June 5, 2016- July 30, 2017. Eliminate the “Turkey Gobbler”

Redefine the Neckline with New Medical Technologies by Katrina Musto

T

he gentle curve of the neck plays an important part in projecting a youthful appearance. According to a 2015 survey by the American Society of Dermatology, 68% of consumers are bothered by “submental fullness”—a double chin. For men and women, excessive chin fat can lead to a negative self-impression.

painless treatment produces results in three weeks, reaching its full potential in two to three months. Dr. Aurora DeJuliis of The Aurora DeJuliis, MD European MediSpa in Montclair explains most patients require only one treatment, although depending on the amount of chin fat, some may require another session.

As people age, the neck goes through substantial changes. Various rejuvenation techniques have been developed to address the aging neck. The FDA recently approved two therapies that target the unwanted turkey gobbler: Cryotherapy and Kybella®.

With the other therapy, Kybella® (deoxycholic acid) is injected into the fat beneath the chin and destroys the unwelcome fat cells. Side effects consist of bruising and mild swelling, but results start to appear in three weeks. Usually three or four sessions are necessary.

Cryotherapy unleashes the power of cold to freeze fat cells. Performed using CoolSculpting® technology, a small applicator called the “Mini” conforms to the neck’s shape, targeting unwanted fat cells. The

“In my experience” adds Dr. DeJuliis, “both treatments are very effective at eliminating fat cells. The added bonus is tighter skin and a betterdefined neckline.”

Tips to Get More Nutrients in Your Daily Diet Getting all the nutrients you need each day to function or even thrive can be a challenge. After all, there are only so many meals in a day. Here are some creative ways to pack the necessary nutrients into your day, without going over your tight calorie budget.

MAKE EACH BITE COUNT It’s tempting to sneak in “empty calories,” with foods and beverages that have little in the way of nutritional value. Don’t give in to sugary treats or easy fixes. You will ultimately feel more satisfied by foods that work to fuel your body. Plan meals ahead to ensure they each include a healthful balance of proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, amino acids and minerals. Eating colorfully with each meal can help, because fresh fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts and seeds of different colors can provide a rich mix of these valuable nutrients and antioxidants. Also, don’t let unhealthy snacking be your downfall. Snacking doesn’t have to carry the connotation of mindless consumption in front of a television. Carefully planned bites between meals can be just what the nutritionist ordered.

Ear, Nose & Throat Care You Can Trust! Specializing in the treatment of:

Get to know the healthful options on restaurant menus and take the time to chew and enjoy your food.

• Hearing Loss • Sinusitis • Thyroid Disease • Tonsillitis • Balloon Sinuplasty • Obstructive Sleep Apnea • Head and Neck Cancer • Voice Disorders • Nasal Obstruction

EASY REPLACEMENTS Some of the most essential nutritional components include protein, good carbohydrates, healthy fats, vitamins, minerals, fiber, enzymes and probiotics. While many foods contain some of these important nutrients, landing on the right formula can be an ongoing and time-consuming challenge. It doesn’t have to be.

For instance, consider a cup of high fiber cereal mixed with a few nuts or pumpkin seeds to tide you over between meals, A piece of whole wheat toast with a little nut butter also can do the trick, as can a piece of fruit with a slice of cheese.

Consider fast tracking your way to all eight of these core nutrients with a high-quality meal replacement. For example, Illumin8, a plant-based USDA Certified Organic powder from Sunwarrior goes well beyond a traditional protein supplement and can be used as a meal replacement, snack or pre/post workout shake. Available in three flavors, Vanilla Bean, Aztec Chocolate and Mocha, clean eating can also taste good.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE Match your nutrient-filled diet with a healthy lifestyle. Get plenty of sleep each night, at least eight hours, and move more during the day, with at least 20 minutes of activity. Be sure to stay hydrated all day long with glasses of clean, clear liquids. Water aids digestion and helps you skip the sugary soft drinks, which are high in calories but offer no nutritional value. Opt for water and green tea instead. —StatePoint

Stop in the Name of Slouch THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD POSTURE By Katrina Musto

F

or many who work in the nine-to-five world, sitting is the norm and slouching over a mouse pad is typical. Posture—or how a body is positioned when sitting, standing and lying down—may become compromised by such bad habits.

Spring is Here!

Take steps to correct poor posture before discomfort and injury results. Good posture promotes health by keeping bones and joints in alignment, maintaining a strong spine and preventing fatigue and strain.

Three Tips for Getting Perfect Posture:

1

If working at a desk, sit up straight with your shoulders dropped, keep your eyes level with the top of the monitor and elbows and wrists straight at 90-degree angles.

2

Take a Yoga or Pilates class. Strengthening core muscles will work wonders and ultimately fix posture problems.

3

Lift weights. Simple weight-lifting exercises can improve posture while also helping tone the rest of the body.

A New Standout in Montclair Turtle + The Wolf: Montclair All the Way to Its Name

Chef Lauren Hirschberg

By Rhonda L. Rivera, Photos by Dan Epstein

A

new restaurant is making its mark on Montclair’s discerning palate in a big way, with home-grown flair. Turtle + The Wolf (T+W) is owned by Montclair native Chef Lauren Hirschberg and his childhood friend Matt Trevenen. The eatery’s menu emphasizes fresh, seasonal ingredients sourced locally whenever possible. The walls are filled with original works by area artist Tom Nussbaum, which are available for purchase. Even the name is indigenous, representing clans of the Lenape Indians who used to inhabit Montclair. T+W boasts a New York City feel with its open kitchen, inviting décor and great service. Chef Lauren’s talents honed in famed Tom Colicchio’s NYC restaurants are on full display as each Contemporary American dish showcases his creativity and imagination, all beautifully presented. For starters, try the deviled eggs with paprika and chives ($3). Not your picnic fare, these are slightly spicy and deliciously smooth. For a more advanced taste, order the pecorino arancini with spicy tomato sauce ($6), crunchy fried balls filled with creamy risotto goodness. 58

May 2016

In the mood for a salad? T+W has you covered with its burrata salad, featuring julienned endive, thinly sliced gala apple and walnuts ($15). Saba—a fruity, slightly acidic syrup taken from the first press of grapes— perfectly compliments the delightful cheese. Another excellent choice is the roasted beet salad with cara cara orange sections, ricotta salada and pistachios ($12). When it is time for the main course, the ricotta agnolotti ($21) is a pleasure. These fresh pasta pillows containing creamy ricotta are topped with the very creative pesto made not from the standard basil, but rather stinging nettles. The Atlantic halibut ($34), perfectly seasoned and seared, is a succulent delight while the tender braised beef brisket ($27) is equally delicious. Save room for dessert! The maple pot de crème ($8) is a sweet, amazing piece of heaven that puts an exclamation mark to the end of an exquisite meal. Zeppoles ($7), served over a pineapple puree, are light and airy treats. T+W is a standout addition to the Montclair dining scene, destined for lengthy reservation wait lists. Sample the standout fare today.

Diamond MINDS

Those Who Desire Nothing—

Possess Everything

W

hat does that saying really mean? It’s been a saying that I remember from my past experience in the martial arts and the research of martial arts masters. Does that mean I don’t desire nice things? That I don’t want success? That I don’t reach out and grab opportunities or set goals? Not really. I still do. But when so many of the martial arts masters from the past talked about this “effortless effort” and “detachment” it intrigued me.

“Take no thought of who is right or wrong, or who is better than. Be not for or against.” —Bruce Lee

There is a fine line between the study of Zen and what we call achievement and success. To achieve something great you need to have a hunger, desire, tenacity and go after it with all your might. But that’s contradictory to what Zen emphasizes. The dictionary definition of Zen: An approach to an activity, skill, or subject that emphasizes simplicity and intuition rather than conventional thinking or fixation on goals. Does achievement without effort mean you don’t work hard? Not at all. It’s actually a detachment from the desire of caring too much about winning or caring too much about not winning. —And that’s where it gets difficult to put your arms around. It is pure action with body and mind as one. Too much caring and desire for winning will get in the way of the performance.

There is a saying I have talked about in past columns, called Mushin, which means “no mind” or action without thinking. Yogi Berra said it best, “How can anybody hit and think at the same time”. Actions are pure and come naturally without thought. But the real key is detachment. Not to think and just do. Your body and mind are together and there are no thoughts disrupting the action. Because when you do not care you can be at ease. One of my favorite books on this subject is “Zen in the Martial Arts,” by Joe Hyams. He tells a story about when he was training with his sensei who told him to hit a baseball mitt that was kept perfectly still. As soon as Joe got ready to punch he tensed up and his sensei was aware of his intention and he moved the mitt before Joe could strike it. “Relax,” he said. “Stop straining. The less effort, the faster and more powerful you will be.” As soon as Joe relaxed his body and mind, he hit the target. His sensei told him, “You stopped caring whether you hit the mitt or not. It is the caring or desire which stands in the way of effortless effort. You must stop caring about doing it and just do it— effortlessly and naturally as snow falls from the tree or water bubbles up from the spring.”

“When you learn not to want things so badly, life comes to you.”

—Jessica Lange American actress
