ontclair-goers rejoice: There’s a new bar in town at local seafood restaurant, FIN Raw Bar & Kitchen. Now featuring a full liquor license, FIN clientele can sip cocktails at the bar, socialize around cocktail tables, or enjoy their favorite drink during dinner. FIN has been operating as a BYO restaurant for the past five years, offering light, clean fare with a focus on sustainability and seasonal quality. The addition of a full bar will not affect FIN’s BYO policy, nor will there be any corkage fees for guests who would like to bring their own. Additionally, in the next few months, a sister restaurant will be opening up next door—an 8,500 sq. ft. indoor/outdoor Gastropub to be exact. The Gastropub will offer 48 beers on tap, craft small batch distillery cocktails, and a full “gastropub” style menu. ive the Kids Hope Foundation announces its Seventh Annual David Harris Golf Invitational; set for Monday, May 16, at the exclusive Green Brook Country Club in North Caldwell.
This year’s benefit Golf Invitational, names in David Harris’s honor, will support needed funds to rebuild the pavilion that provides shelter for the new spray park at Camp Hope in Passaic County and will be used in part for summer programs for disadvantaged youth at Turtle Back Zoo in Essex County. Give the Kids Hope Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)3 charitable organization, directly benefits underprivileged children in New Jersey. The foundation has set a goal in 2016 to continue its support of providing needed renovations at Camp Hope in West Milford, NJ where over 2,700 underprivileged children from North Jersey attend at no cost every summer. New Thai Restaurant Adds Spice to Livingston’s Restaurant Scene

Owner Sheree Sarabhayavanija opened Boon Thai Kitchen in January of 2016 after the success of her sister restaurant, Spice Thai II in Montclair. Their classic Thai recipes bring a refreshing ethnic flavor to the Livingston dining scene. Visitors can try traditional Thai favorites like Drunken Noodles, or Boon Thai Kitchen’s mouthwatering duck specialties, such as Duck Tamarind or Duck Salad with pineapples and chili lime. Two Centuries of Cultivating Green Space: The History of Macculloch Hall’s Gardens George Macculloch (1775-1858) was an avid gardener who cultivated his 26 acres to feed his family and as a form of creative expression and is credited with growing the first New Jersey tomato. Through photographs, design plans and journals, this exhibition will trace the history of the gardens from the nineteenth-century kitchen garden and farm, to the early-twentieth century gardens favored by later generations of the Miller Family. Creative Hub Flourishes in Montclair {verdigreen}: part vintage-furnishings boutique, part DIY destination By Deborah Schapiro, photo by Dan Epstein
W
hen Azie Shelhorse moved to Montclair from Atlanta in 2012, she was a stay-at-home mother of two young children who enjoyed painting furniture and selling it on the arts-and-crafts website Etsy. At some point, though, she says, “Enough people were buying my items that it became too difficult to manage as just a hobby.” Shelhorse and her husband originally conceived of 182 Glenridge Avenue in Montclair as a great location for a studio where she could continue to paint furniture. Seeking a like-minded community, they decided to use the space to showcase local artists as well. Since its October 2013 opening, {verdigreen} has become a multipurpose creative destination. The original premise has blossomed into full-scale art gallery nights and music nights. Shelhorse views these “Free Fridays” as more a party than a sales event: “We’ve had jazz trios and the Opera Theatre of Montclair perform, and we always offer food and wine from local vendors. Everything is free; I don’t even like to open the cash register on Free Fridays.” Now also a boutique, {verdigreen} sells vintage home goods ranging from furniture to lighting fixtures. The shop also carries an extensive line of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® and Soft Wax. Shelhorse explains, “This paint is not meant for chalk boards; it’s called chalk paint because of its chalk-like matte finish. It’s nontoxic, water-based, easy to use and gives beautiful results. You can literally use it on different fabrics as well as on furniture.” She uses this paint in the work she does for commercial and residential clients. The versatile {verdigreen} also has become a resource for those wanting custom finishes but don’t have the time or the inclination to do it themselves. Instructor

as well as a crafter and entrepreneur, Shelhorse teaches classes in furniture painting, decoupage, papier-mache and more. The center also offers Mommyand-Me classes as well as Ladies’ Nights Out.
So successful has {verdigreen} become that as of last April, Shelhorse opened a second location in New York City’s East Village. While it too has become quite successful, she has no intention of closing the original: “I would never want to close the original {verdigreen} unless I were retiring. The Montclair shop is my happy place.”

onths of harsh weather conditions can take their toll on your home and outdoor features. Calendar of Events Montclair Animal Shelter Seeks Help After Devastating Fire
T
he Montclair Township Animal Shelter (MTAS) had to temporarily shutter its doors because of the severe damage the building sustained from April 3rd’s fire in the rear portion of the structure. Thanks to the tremendous efforts of staff, volunteers and neighbors, all 30 dogs and 41 cats were safely moved from the shelter and are currently fostered with local shelters and volunteers.. While the dogs and cats have been relocated to foster homes and other shelters, the Montclair Animal Shelter still needs to help with their care and it can’t get to any of its supplies. The Friends of the Montclair Township Animal Shelter (FOMTAS) has started an online fundraiser to cover short-term repairs that can get animals and staff back into its building and then a more extensive remodeling of the aged building. The campaign’s goal is $225,000. FOMTAS is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation so all donations are tax deductible. To make a donation, please visit www.fomtasnj.org. (continued from page 45)

A
t first, it might appear that Ruth Bollo’s passion is cleaning. Yes, she has operated a successful cleaning service for 30 years. Yes, she also has a cleaning consulting business, Clean It Right. Yes, she finds cleaning both enjoyable and therapeutic. All that being true, however, Bollo’s real passion lies with helping people. She loves to share her battle-tested knowledge about cleaning with others. For example, Bollo’s local adult school cleaning classes start with a lecture that soon morphs into a problem-solving session with students. She listens to them describe the ink stains on their sofas and mildew on their siding. Taking notes, she researches solutions
after class and gives personalized advice. Sometimes Bollo even calls to follow-up on how things worked out. Driven by her need to reach even a larger audience, last year Bollo decided to write a book that distills her years of cleaning experience. And so “Clean It Right, The Proper Art of Cleaning” was conceived. Bollo soon learned that writing and polishing her guide is as challenging as getting motor oil out of silk. Working with a local designer and editor, Ruth spent most of 2015 writing, proofreading, rewriting and proofreading again. By December, she finally held her labor of love in her hands.

As the United States industrialized in the early 18th century, Newark grew to become one of the leading industrial centers of the country. Newark’s main areas of manufacture were leather, beer and precious metals. However, many other kinds of goods were produced in workshops and factories throughout the city. For example, Franklin Murphy, one of the Newark Museum’s founding trustees, was a varnish manufacturer. Everything from carriages, automobiles, furniture, pearl buttons, silk stockings, tools and machinery was produced here as well. Tiffany & Co. opened an enormous factory in Newark’s North Ward, in 1894, and by 1929 it and other Newark workshops were producing 90 percent of the gold jewelry made in America.

New Directions: Dannielle Tegeder
Raised in a family of steamfitters, including her father, Brooklyn-based artist Dannielle Tegeder is fascinated by architecture, urbanism, and engineering, which inspire her abstract drawings, paintings, installations, and animations. The Laurie Art Staircase installation will comprise wall drawings and sculptural elements, and will explore how that space, with its vast glass wall facing onto both the Museum grounds and the distant Manhattan skyline, melds together the inside and outside of the Museum building. Intended to be viewed as much from the exterior as from the interior, the installation will reference MAM’s architecture, as well as its engineering systems, such as HVAC, wiring, and plumbing, hidden behind its walls.

This installation will be complemented by two new video animations that Tegeder is creating for the video monitors on MAM’s grounds. A
new restaurant is making its mark on Montclair’s discerning palate in a big way, with home-grown flair. Turtle + The Wolf (T+W) is owned by Montclair native Chef Lauren Hirschberg and his childhood friend Matt Trevenen. The eatery’s menu emphasizes fresh, seasonal ingredients sourced locally whenever possible. The walls are filled with original works by area artist Tom Nussbaum, which are available for purchase. Even the name is indigenous, representing clans of the Lenape Indians who used to inhabit Montclair. T+W boasts a New York City feel with its open kitchen, inviting décor and great service. Chef Lauren’s talents honed in famed Tom Colicchio’s NYC restaurants are on full display as each Contemporary American dish showcases his creativity and imagination, all beautifully presented. For starters, try the deviled eggs with paprika and chives ($3). Not your picnic fare, these are slightly spicy and deliciously smooth. For a more advanced taste, order the pecorino arancini with spicy tomato sauce ($6), crunchy fried balls filled with creamy risotto goodness. 58

In the mood for a salad? T+W has you covered with its burrata salad, featuring julienned endive, thinly sliced gala apple and walnuts ($15). Saba—a fruity, slightly acidic syrup taken from the first press of grapes— perfectly compliments the delightful cheese. Another excellent choice is the roasted beet salad with cara cara orange sections, ricotta salada and pistachios ($12). When it is time for the main course, the ricotta agnolotti ($21) is a pleasure. These fresh pasta pillows containing creamy ricotta are topped with the very creative pesto made not from the standard basil, but rather stinging nettles. The Atlantic halibut ($34), perfectly seasoned and seared, is a succulent delight while the tender braised beef brisket ($27) is equally delicious. Save room for dessert! The maple pot de crème ($8) is a sweet, amazing piece of heaven that puts an exclamation mark to the end of an exquisite meal. Zeppoles ($7), served over a pineapple puree, are light and airy treats. W
hat does that saying really mean? It’s been a saying that I remember from my past experience in the martial arts and the research of martial arts masters. Does that mean I don’t desire nice things? That I don’t want success? That I don’t reach out and grab opportunities or set goals? Not really. I still do. But when so many of the martial arts masters from the past talked about this “effortless effort” and “detachment” it intrigued me.

There is a fine line between the study of Zen and what we call achievement and success. To achieve something great you need to have a hunger, desire, tenacity and go after it with all your might. But that’s contradictory to what Zen emphasizes. The dictionary definition of Zen: An approach to an activity, skill, or subject that emphasizes simplicity and intuition rather than conventional thinking or fixation on goals. Does achievement without effort mean you don’t work hard? Not at all. It’s actually a detachment from the desire of caring too much about winning or caring too much about not winning. —And that’s where it gets difficult to put your arms around. It is pure action with body and mind as one. Too much caring and desire for winning will get in the way of the performance.
There is a saying I have talked about in past columns, called Mushin, which means “no mind” or action without thinking. Yogi Berra said it best, “How can anybody hit and think at the same time”. Actions are pure and come naturally without thought. But the real key is detachment. Not to think and just do. Your body and mind are together and there are no thoughts disrupting the action. Because when you do not care you can be at ease. One of my favorite books on this subject is “Zen in the Martial Arts,” by Joe Hyams. He tells a story about when he was training with his sensei who told him to hit a baseball mitt that was kept perfectly still. As soon as Joe got ready to punch he tensed up and his sensei was aware of his intention and he moved the mitt before Joe could strike it. “Relax,” he said. “Stop straining. The less effort, the faster and more powerful you will be.” As soon as Joe relaxed his body and mind, he hit the target. His sensei told him, “You stopped caring whether you hit the mitt or not. It is the caring or desire which stands in the way of effortless effort. You must stop caring about doing it and just do it— effortlessly and naturally as snow falls from the tree or water bubbles up from the spring.”
