he West Caldwell Education Foundation (CWCEF) will hold their 5th annual 5k event on May 18. This popular event attracts everyone from the serious runner to local principals and teachers competing for the fastest school to families walking and running together.
The event’s profits target programs benefitting all children in the Caldwell West Caldwell school district. The Foundation has helped to fund educational programs and purchase equipment for classroom use that would not necessarily be available within the district’s budget.
The race will kick off at 9am at James Caldwell High School and will take runners on a route looping through historic Grover Cleveland Park. The annual event, a certified Grand Prix Race sanctioned by the NJ Track and Field Organization, has previously hosted over 600 runners and walkers.
Participants in the 5K can register online at www.cecef.org or in person the day of the event. Online registration ends on May 15.

ooking to give back to the community, Jessica Kim, co-owner of Grace Cleaners, started sewing charming hats that are made from using old t-shirts. The hats are distributed to patients of all ages at Overlook Medical Center in Summit who have lost their hair after undergoing cancer treatments. Jessica hopes to increase the distribution of her hats to include hospitals in all of Essex, Morris and surrounding areas. In order to do so, Jessica is accepting donations of cotton jersey t-shirts of any size and color. T-shirts with sequins, characters on them, etc. are encouraged as they make the hats even more unique. Donations should be dropped off at Grace Cleaners at 398 S. Livingston Avenue in Livingston.

Collecting Donations for Mother’s Day
E
ach year during tax season, Levine, Jacobs & Company, LLC, an accounting firm in Livingston, selects a charity for which they raise money, collect donations, or participate in a fundraiser. This year, after hearing about the charity mission of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK, they were moved to help. As part of its Movers for Moms® program, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK partners with local businesses and organizations to collect essential care items for women staying in domestic abuse or homeless shelters. Through May 1, donations of soaps, hair styling products, shampoos and conditioners, pillows, blankets, slippers, and other basic clothing items will be accepted at Levine, Jacobs & Company and will be delivered to shelters around Mother’s Day. According to Michael H. Karu, CPA/CFF, “Being part of the community does not just mean that we work here. We need to be actively engaged in the community and help those less fortunate. We may not be able to change someone’s life, but maybe we can make it a little better, even for one day.”

LOOKING AHEAD—TUESDAY, JUNE 4
NOW’S THE TIME TOUR Collective Soul & Gin Blossoms
C
ollective Soul are pumped and primed to celebrate their 25th anniversary in 2019 in all-out style, but they’re really just gearing up for the long haul. Ever since the barnburning rock band from Stockbridge, Georgia burst onto the national scene with the runaway success of their multi-platinum 1993 debut Hints Allegations and Things Left Unsaid and its ensuing mega-smash hits like “Shine” and “Breathe,” they’ve been on an upward trajectory that’s seen them play to sold-out audiences across the globe while concurrently amassing an impressive catalog of beloved songs instantly recognizable by their titles alone. They are proud to welcome the newest member of their recorded family into the world titled Blood. Blood is the culmination of a quarter-century of Collective Soul assessing not only where they’ve come from, but also where they’re going.
Collective Soul
The Gin Blossoms record “New Miserable Experience” with singles “Hey Jealousy,” “Allison Road,” “Until I Fall Away,” “Mrs Rita,” and “Found Out About You” rocketed the band into the mainstream going on to sell over 5 million copies making the band a 90’s radio mainstay. In 1995, Robin Wilson, Jesse Valenzuela and veteran composer Marshall Crenshaw wrote the bands 4th of 9 sound track inclusions; “Til I Hear It From You.” The smash hit was released as a Gin Blossoms single and it appeared on the platinum sound track for the film Empire Records. The band performed in over 100 cities in 2017, and with additional promotional stops 2017 was one of the busiest touring years since the early 90’s. 2017-2018 laps the 25th anniversary of the bands 5 times platinum album New Miserable Experience. In addition to regular admission, special VIP packages are available for each band that include exclusive pre-show Meet and Greet.

NJ KITCHENS AND BATHS
FORM, FUNCTION & FAB! By Cynthia Burns
W
“
e provide quality work at a fair price,” says Andrew Koutoudis, owner of NJ Kitchens and Baths. He describes the business as a small shop, one that allows him to directly manage each project. “I am the customer’s point of contact from start to finish.”
Remodeling a kitchen or bath is a significant project, especially when expanding or reconfiguring the space. “If designed properly,” says Koutoudis, “it can contribute to the value of your home.”
Andrew Koutoudis & Gerry Galvan
NJ Kitchens and Baths specializes in kitchen and bathroom design and cabinetry. The company designs, builds and installs cabinets, countertops, hardware and fixtures. Made-to-order countertops are the norm. When remodeling a kitchen, choose the cabinets first, Koutoudis advises. Once that decision is made, it will be easier to select a countertop. He explains that his customized designs remain true to the architectural uniqueness of each home. This helps determine if the cabinet style will be traditional, which tends to be a bit more ornate; to contemporary featuring flat, simple lines without much detail or transitional, which encompasses elements from both. In addition to the aesthetics of a design, Koutoudis says, “Functionality and space planning are important. The client needs to be able to work in the space efficiently and comfortably.” A bathroom is a comfort zone within the home. “Your bathroom should be comfortable, attractive and functional,” notes Koutoudis. One of the most May 2019
important decisions to make is whether to install a shower, tub or both. Koutoudis assists clients in choosing realistic design elements within the budget allotted for the project. He reminds clients that a renovation is more than cabinets and a countertop. The project may consist of new floors, ceiling, appliances and everything in between. The owner brings more than 20 years of construction experience to each project. He opened his showroom in 2016. NJ Kitchens and Baths is fully licensed and insured, and all required permits are obtained by them. “We like to build a good relationship with clients,” says Koutoudis. “Our goal is that they are happy with the completed project and have no reservations about the work we do.”

From Darts to Custom Pool Tables The Game Room Store has it all—plus fun! By Janis Hashe
I
n the 45 years since Fairfield’s The Game Room Store opened, retail has changed dramatically, second-generation owner Wayne Masters acknowledges. But his business, with its extensive array of games, from darts to backgammon to bocce ball, and furniture, from foosball, air hockey, shuffleboard and pool tables to bars and stools, has embraced change. One significant addition: custom recycled-wood furniture. Masters started with a wine rack made from wood pallets. “It sold that same day,” he says. He taught himself how to make dart cabinets, bars, pub tables—and the demand grew. “Tell us what you want, what kind of wood, and we’ll make it,” Masters says. He has also kept his games inventory fresh and unique, and created a friendly environment where customers can enjoy themselves as they try out the demo pool table or a new game. “We make the retail experience a fun experience,” he says.

Advice for When Purchasing a Home
F
or those purchasing a house, especially first-time homeowners, a lack of knowledge can make that final decision even more difficult. Luckily, Premiere Contractors in Montclair will advise clients who may have a number of questions or concerns about a home they are in the process of purchasing. Beginning with the home inspection report, they will walk clients through what everything means and what some of the more immediate items may be. Says owner Bill Wojtowicz, “We’ll have a conversation to understand their situation, answer any questions or concerns they may have regarding its current condition and then discuss their master plan with regard to what they want their home to look and feel like after it’s repaired and/or renovated.” With over 20 years of experience working on old homes throughout the Montclair area, Premiere Contractors knows what common issues and pitfalls to look for. These include “the electrical system, particularly old wiring and lack of adequate circuits in old homes; the plumbing and heating system, particularly old water lines; the condition of the roof and windows; termite damage; water damage and rot, ” notes Bill. He also advises clients to obtain a chimney, roof, sewer line, termite, and radon inspection as well as an electrical inspection including circuit mapping.
Upon reviewing all reports, Premiere Contractors can help clients understand costs and the timing in which the repairs or renovations should be made to avoid redundant work, which only add to the overall costs. If the clients do decide to move forward with the home purchase, then Premiere Contractors offers full design amd build services and will help guide them through the renovation process turning their new house into their home.

Dr. Cruz’s goal is helping patients suffering from orthopedicor sports-related injuries pursue their goals of reducing pain, optimizing fitness or reaching new goals. Pursue PT strives to get patients healthy as quickly as possible.
• Cosmetic & General Dentistry • Digital X-Rays • White Fillings • Veneers • Crowns & Bridges • Implant Restorations
• Invisalign • Zoom Whitening ® • Most Insurance Plans Accepted • Evening & Saturday Appointments Available • Care Credit Accepted
Drawing upon his experience as an injured collegiate basketball player, as well as his advanced knowledge and manual skill set, Dr. Cruz creates more efficient rehab protocols. “We aren’t a factory trying to get people in and out fast; rather, I take my time assessing and treating every patient as an individual,” says Cruz. Dr. Cruz also says using PT as the frontline of care for musculoskeletal pathologies helps cost and treatment time, but that most people wait for a physician’s script before seeking PT. “Not only can people arrange for therapy on their own, without a script, most will do just as well, or better when opting for PT over surgery or medication,” he says.

Dr. Alexis Parcells Answers Questions Regarding BIA-ALCL
T
here has been a lot of recent media attention regarding the risk of a certain type of cancer associated with breast implants, known as Breast Implant Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). We reached out to Dr. Alexis Parcells, a Plastic Surgeon specializing in Breast Reconstruction and Aesthetics, to answer the following questions regarding this condition.
What is BIA-ALCL? BIA- ALCL is not breast cancer. Rather, it is a rare type of lymphoma that has been predominately found in women with textured (as opposed to smooth) silicone breast implants. The FDA estimates that there are 5 million to 10 million women worldwide who have breast implants. As of November 2018, there have been 626 confirmed cases of BIA-ALCL reported worldwide. If you are unsure if you have a smooth or textured breast implant, ask your plastic surgeon.
How would a patient know if she has BIA-ALCL? How is it diagnosed? Asymptomatic women without breast changes do not require more than routine mammograms and breast exams. The most common symptom reported is usually swelling of the breast, often caused by fluid building around the implant. Other symptoms include pain, lumps, and asymmetry between breasts. The fluid may be seen on ultrasound and a sample can be tested in a laboratory to confirm the diagnosis.
How is BIA-ALCL treated? The recommended treatment is removal of the breast implant and the surrounding scar tissue layer, or capsule. Additional treatment may be necessary.
Should patients have their implants removed because of BIA-ALCL? Currently, neither the FDA nor any Plastic Surgery society recommends that women should preventatively remove textured breast implants to prevent BIA-ALCL. This is not a disease of breast tissue, rather it is related to the texturing of the implant device. Case reports of the same disease have recently been described in textured gluteal implants. However, there are women who have been concerned enough about BIA-ALCL and have chosen to have their implants removed. There are some women who were already considering a breast implant revision, and the BIA-ALCL issue gave them one more reason to decide to proceed.
Dr. Alexis Parcells
Where can I find additional information and resources about BIA-ALCL? For the most up-to-date information regarding this condition, I suggest visiting the following websites: • American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS): smartbeautyguide.com/procedures/breast/breast-augmentation • American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS): plasticsurgery.org/ cosmetic-procedures/breast-augmentation/safety • FDA: www.fda.gov/MedicalDevices/ProductsandMedicalProcedures/ ImplantsandProsthetics/BreastImplants/ucm259296.htm

TOP 3 N
atural treatments are quickly gaining popularity in the cosmetic anti-aging industry. While fillers, neurotoxins and surgeries were once the only options, people are seeking more natural ways to enhance their appearance.
Natural Aesthetic Treatments to Look Your Best for Summer Supermodel Christie Brinkley, 65, is an avid proponent of Ultherapy.
“People are living healthier lifestyles, so it stands to reason that many are seeking natural treatments to look their best,” says Jennifer Aquino, nurse practitioner at NJ Health Hub, a medi-spa and regenerative medicine center in Cedar Grove. The most sought-after treatments include Ultherapy and the PRP facial, both designed to produce younger-looking skin, and fat freezing, which eliminates unwanted body fat. “If you want to see results by summer, now is a good time to get these treatments,” says Aquino, explaining that the natural regenerative and metabolic processes that occur take anywhere from a few weeks to three months to see full results.
Ultherapy Ultherapy uses high-powered ultrasound energy to provide a lifted, firmer, smoother look on specific areas of the face, chin and neck, and to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the décolletage. The non-invasive procedure is FDA-cleared. “Ultherapy bypasses the surface of the skin to deliver ultrasound energy that triggers a natural response under the skin, which jumpstarts the regenerative process that produces fresh, new collagen,” explains Christine Oronos, certified ultrasound technician at NJ Health Hub. “Some people don’t want to get a facelift because of the risks of surgery,” she says. “This gives a natural, lifted appearance and there’s no downtime. You can go right back to normal activity.”
PRP Facial The PRP facial uses your own blood to improve overall skin tone, texture and elasticity. A small amount of your blood is drawn and then spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to be used to stimulate collagen-producing cells.
A fat freezing treatment being performed at NJ Health Hub in Cedar Grove.
After the skin is prepped with a microneedling device to create microscopic holes, the plasma, which is rich in protein and growth factors, is applied all over the face and injected into strategic areas, explains Aquino, who often adds an application of pure Vitamin C to the treatment. “The PRP facial delivers long-lasting results on fine lines and wrinkles,” says Aquino. “It’s also effective on under-eye puffiness, dark circles, scar tissue, sun damage and uneven skin tone.”
Fat Freezing Fat freezing is a non-invasive way to naturally eliminate fat cells. The procedure works by cooling the targeted area to a level that causes fat cells to freeze without adversely affecting the skin. The frozen fat cells break down and then safely leave the body through natural processes. Even if you’re in good shape, fat freezing helps to get rid of excess fat that can be difficult to lose, experts say. The procedure results in a slimmer appearance in the treated areas because a percentage of fat cells in those areas will actually be eliminated.

o time? Feeling overwhelmed? Have to balance everything...family, business, checkbook? Seems to be a popular challenge. Not enough time in the day. I’m not going to give you the normal list of 3, 5 or 10 things to do to manage your time and increase the quality of each day. There are so many ways to address this and I just don’t have enough
you are dangling as the string becomes the line directly down through your spine to your feet. And then just breathe deeply in through your nose, out through your mouth. Just concentrate on your breathing. For 10 minutes each day. Do not think. Just concentrate on your breathing. I’ve been doing this for over 15 years.

Having multiple projects that sometimes overwhelm my actions to the point I am not productive, and my thinking becomes scattered, I have used this simple method to clear the mind. What happens? You begin to get an overflow of new ideas, clarity on frustrating projects that need answers, a calming effect that grounds you, and a renewed energy that I can’t explain. Still waters run deep, and the
mind settles to its natural state. Then you come back with a rested mind and body ready to work.
Barry Farber
There’s an old story of a lumberjack competition where the younger lumberjack thought he would be the winner based upon how many trees he was cutting down and how many breaks his competitor was taking. When shocked at the end of the competition because he lost, the younger man turned to the winner and asked, “How can this be? I heard you taking breaks every hour while I worked continuously. I am younger and stronger than you. How could you possibly have beat me?” The older man smiled and said, “Son, I was not stopping to rest. I was stopping to sharpen my axe.” I want to thank the readers for all your support over the years with your letters and feedback on the impact it’s made in your life. The most recent letter came from Kimberly who inspired this Diamond Minds column.
