harron Miller’s Academy for the Performing Arts (SMAPA) presents the talented dancers of The Performance Workshop Ensemble (PWE), and The Junior Performance Workshop Ensemble (JPWE) on Sunday, June 14th at 3pm. Fun Family Fundraiser

he first annual Mini Golf Classic will tee off on Saturday, June 20th at the Essex County miniGOLF Safari at South Mountain Reservation in West Orange. This familyfriendly event is a fundraiser in support of The Turtle Back Zoo Educational Center. The tournament will be open to adult and child teams with awards given for best scores and performances. Many of the zoo animals will be on hand to cheer on the teams. Start times are at 11:30am, 1pm and 3pm. Registration is 30 minutes prior. The event includes a family barbeque from 11am-5pm with live music and raffles. Non-golfers will find other fun contests to compete in. Sports stars and celebrities with close ties to New Jersey are expected to lend their support and cheer on competitors. Tips to Keep Kids Learning & Prevent “Summer Slump” “No more pencils, no more books…” is a familiar summer refrain. But make sure your youngster doesn’t take those words too seriously.

ll students—regardless of socio-economic status—lose approximately 2.6 months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation over summer, according to a Johns Hopkins study. This pattern of academic regression has been dubbed “summer slump.” Fortunately—for proactive parents—these quick-and-easy tips can help stem its tide.

Watch Your Language You’ve probably admonished your son or daughter with this phrase, but when it comes to summer learning, take heed of it yourself. When kids are enjoying vacation, they may not want to hear words like “school,” “educational” or “assignment.” Try using words like “exploration,” “adventure” and “discovery” instead.

Make Learning Fun Remember when you had to take a spoonful of cough medicine and your mom or dad would let you wash it down with something sweet? For kids, summer learning can be a bitter pill to swallow, but it tends to go down more easily when paired with a fun activity. The National Center for Families Learning (NCFL), for instance, has created a program called Camp Wonderopolis, a digital platform aiming to harness the spirit of exploration and adventure captured by traditional summer camps. 24

ccording to Ed Carolan, spring is generally a contractor’s busiest season. Carolan, owner of Carolan Contractors in Verona, adds that this spring has been even busier than usual. “After the winter we just had, with all the snow and ice damage, people are spending their bonus money on home repair.” Since 1978, Carolan Contractors has been specializing in home exteriors: roofing, siding, doors and windows. Due to increased ice damming this past winter, the company has done more roof repair work than usual. Ed comments, “We use a lot of GAF Timberline roofing. It’s a long-lasting asphalt shingle that looks just like cedar.” For customers seeking a slate roof look, he recommends the CertainTeed brand. “This is a high-end brand for roof shingles; their Carriage House line really gives the look of a slate roof.” For windows and doors, notes Ed, his company favors high-end companies such as Andersen. “We like the Andersen 400 window series. Their high-performance glass reflects radiant heat, which keeps carpets and furniture from fading; the windows also tilt in for easy cleaning. Andersen also makes nice patio doors.” With siding, Carolan often uses Cedar Impressions. According to Ed, “Cedar

Impressions gives a beautiful, upscale look; we use this brand a lot for our Essex county clients.” He observes that his clients have been increasingly interested in having porticos added to their front doors. “The crown moldings of a portico give a house a lot of curb appeal.” When adding a portico, a small roofed porch leading to the front door, he prefers to use the Azek brand. “Azek manufactures a wide variety of architectural adornments, such as crown moldings, pilasters and window panels. It’s a very popular brand now.” In addition to home exteriors, Carolan Contractors also builds home additions including outdoor decks and, increasingly, three-season rooms. Ed observes, “More and more of our customers are converting their old screened-in porches to threeseason rooms. We replace the old screens with energy-efficient windows so that the space becomes more substantial and can be enjoyed in spring and fall as well as summer. Removing the screens also keeps out dust, pollen and rain.” Whatever project a homeowner needs done, the firm’s routine step-by-step process is a straightforward one. After the initial phone call from the homeowner, Ed comes to the home to take pictures and

give an estimate. He points out that unlike at other firms, where a customer may wind up meeting with a salesperson, “at Carolan, you meet with the owner himself.”

“Normally, Once we get a customer, we have him for life.” If the client wants a portico, sketches will be drawn for approval. In all cases, Carolan makes sure all of the necessary permits are obtained from the town before beginning work. He states, “Usually if we begin a project on a Monday, we will be finished that Friday,” although siding jobs can take up to two weeks. Carolan’s clients are pleased with both the products and the workmanship of work. Referring to the high percentage of homeowners who hire Carolan for one project after another, he concludes, “Normally, once we get a customer, we have him for life.

The Wax Den Offering Guests Smooth Skin in Style & Comfort

r. Janine “Jae” Allen is an educator. After teaching for eight years, she decided to change direction completely by opening The Wax Den in Bloomfield in 2012. Even though the venue is vastly different than a classroom, Allen is still utilizing her teaching skills by training every cosmetologist she employs and assuring that everyone who visits the Den will have a safe and relaxing experience. “Our team consists of licensed cosmetologists and estheticians,” says Allen. “Every ‘wax artist’ is personally trained by me in proper technique. They get theory and hands-on education with a practical exam before they can work as part of the team. We educate each guest about the specific processes during the service to ensure they leave healthy and pleased.” Cosmetology has interested Allen for two decades. “I stepped out on faith with less than $1,000 and built The Wax Den out of hunger and passion,” Allen explains. She was driven by her love for the beauty industry since age 16. The beginning of her career in the beauty industry was focused on hair care and styling, but states, “I wanted to specialize in one area and “wow” people who walked through my doors.” Fast forward 17 years and the founder and CEO of The Wax Den attributes her business success to making sure to care for each and every guest who walks through the door. “I strive to make a difference.”

hat’s “the skinny” on minimally invasive cosmetic procedures? Just a few months ago, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) issued its annual report on the plastic surgery scene, citing statistics from 2014 that highlight the demand for particular procedures and treatments in the United States. The ASPS says more than 13.9 million minimally invasive cosmetic procedures were performed last year, offering quick recovery that requires little down time.

Minimally invasive cosmetic procedures often employ injectable fillers, topical solutions and high-tech tools like lasers, typically to reduce visible signs of aging like wrinkles and spots. When surgery is necessary to achieve a desired look, the minimally invasive approach allows the surgeon to do his job through several tiny incisions that cause less pain and scarring.

“Non invasive technology has come to play a major role not only in correction, but also in the ongoing maintenance of a youthful appearance. These procedures offer a viable option for many to look and feel years younger. Since technologies are constantly evolving, it is vital that patients seek out an experienced physician who’s been highly trained in the very latest techniques.” —Barry DiBernardo, MD, New Jersey Plastic Surgery, Montclair A study published in JAMA Dermatology, which examined the outcomes of more than 20,000 cosmetic procedures performed around the country, concluded that minimally invasive procedures are very safe and effective. They can also provide great “cosmetic benefit” over major and potentially risky surgeries. As the ASPS president noted in a press release about the report, “Minimally invasive procedures typically produce subtle aesthetic results and for many people, that is all they want or need at the time.”

ASPS Report: The Top Procedures* • Botulinum Toxin Type A (up 6%), otherwise known as Botox, is delivered via injection into muscles to block nerve signals. The muscles then become paralyzed and do not contract, diminishing wrinkles and fine lines and giving the skin a smoother appearance. Effects can last a few months. • Soft Tissue Fillers (up 3%) that include Radiesse, Juvederm and Restalyne not only smooth skin but also plump it by adding volume to yield a younger look. These injectable fillers enable facial contouring by correcting and/or restoring proportion and can offer long-lasting results. They may be used to add fullness to lips as well. • Chemical Peels (up 7%) remove the skin’s outermost layers to reveal a clearer, fresher-looking face and help improve texture, solve pigmentation problems and reduce fine lines, wrinkles, acne scarring and age spots. They include higher amounts of ingredients such as Retin-A, alpha-hydroxy and beta-hydroxy acids than would be found in over-thecounter products. • Laser Hair Removal (up 3%) uses concentrated light beams to penetrate and ultimately damage hair follicles, preventing or at least dramatically slowing future hair growth. • Microdermabrasion (up 9%) applies tiny crystals to exfoliate dead cells from the skin’s top layer for a rejuvenated appearance. The procedure helps to reduce spots, scarring, hyperpigmentation and other surface problems.

Other Procedures Trending Although radio frequency has been around for decades, it is now gaining popularity as a cosmetic means to tighten the skin and to treat deep veins in the legs. The technology works on the deepest layers of the skin while protecting the epidermis (outermost layer), infusing thermal or heat energy that prompts the body’s natural healing process and the production of collagen. The treatment is recommended for slack skin around the eyebrows, cheeks, jawline and neck—and reduce visibility of varicose veins.

Preventive Care Key to Fighting Skin Cancer

re you at risk for skin cancer? Do you know the signs? According to research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. That means odds are quite high that at least one in your circle of friends will face this dangerous disease. As the season for bare skin approaches, are you aware of the risks and preventative measures necessary to avoid sun exposure? Approximately 58 million Americans are affected by actinic keratosis (AKs), the most common form of pre-cancerous skin damage known casually as “pre-cancers,” according to a report published by The Society for Investigative Dermatology and The American Academy of Dermatology Association. An estimated 10 percent of AKs will become squamous cell carcinoma, the second most common form of skin cancer, within two years.

They can be as small as a pinhead or larger than a quarter. AKs predominately affect people over 50, and slightly more men than women. Individuals who are most likely affected by AKs include those who have risk factors including: fair skin; blond or red hair; blue, green or grey eyes; a history of kidney disease or weakened immune system; daily, long-term exposure to the sun; multiple severe sunburns early in life; and older age. Fortunately, skin cancer can be avoided with treatment, yet many patients fail to seek treatment. What they may not realize is that there are actually many treatment options available, such as cryotherapy (freezing); topical medication; and photodynamic therapy. Additional treatment options include curettage, chemical peel, dermabrasion, surgical incision and lasers.

Foodies Rejoice at Cielo

ever judge a book by its cover. Or a restaurant. From the outside, Cielo looks like a formal, very expensive eatery. You probably have driven by it hundreds of times thinking you were not dressed appropriately or did not have the credit limit available. How wrong you were! And what a treat you were missing. Chef Anthony Puccianello, formerly the executive chef at Luce for ten years, fulfilled his lifelong dream of opening a restaurant in 2011. After difficult and protracted negotiations, his broker said that the “skies would have to open up” for the deal to close. Thankfully for us, they did. To celebrate and continue this positive energy, Chef Anthony decided to name his restaurant for the Italian word meaning sky or heaven; thus, Cielo was born. Cielo (pronounced cello, like the instrument) serves what Chef Anthony likes to call “peasant food,” or Italian comfort food, with a twist. He welcomes everyone into his relaxed restaurant with a genuine desire to take you away from your worries to enjoy a delightful and affordable meal with your friends and family. Known for its homemade pastas and fresh fish, all of the menu items are prepared with a deft hand. While some Italian food can be greasy and heavy, Chef Anthony’s is light, allowing high quality ingredients to shine. Behind the restaurant, which he affectionately calls “his backyard,” he has a fifty yard garden in which he grows fresh herbs and vegetables. Starting with appetizers, the “Famous Inside-Out Meatball” ($13) is a whimsical take on spaghetti and meatballs, where the fresh pasta is inside an exceptionally light meatball. The tasty Artichoke Hearts ($13) are baked oreganata-style with toasted bread crumbs. The cheesy Creamy

Polenta ($10.95), served with truffled wild mushrooms, will melt even the hardest of hearts. Moving on to the pasta course, the Homemade Ricotta Gnocchi ($19) is delicious. These are little clouds rather than heavy dumplings because they are made from ricotta rather than the traditional potato. To enjoy the flavors of Tuscany, try the Schaffatoni ($19): jumbo rigatoni mixed with cannellini beans, homemade sweet fennel sausage, tomatoes, spinach, garlic and olive oil sprinkled with toasted bread crumbs. This dish is the definition of Italian comfort food. If you want heartier fare, choose the Parpardelle ($17.95) with a braised short rib that falls apart on your fork, topped with dollop of ricotta. As an entree, do not miss the Ahi Tuna ($26.95), locally sourced from the Canyon, which is perfectly seared and paired with a soy and wasabi lacquer. Meat lovers will enjoy the delicious Berkshire Slow Roasted Pork Tenderloin ($22.95) with a mustard sauce, served with Brussels sprouts prepared two ways. If you choose to stop in to watch the game or listen to live music on Friday or Saturday evenings, do not miss the delicacies on the Tavern Menu. The mouthwatering Veal Cutlet Sandwich ($12) comes with spinach, mozzarella and long hot fryer peppers that provide just the right amount of heat. The Blue Cheese Stuffed Burger ($10) is a mile high, featuring the cheese inside of the burger, with crispy onions and Sriracha mayonnaise. Cielo offers a Happy Hour Tuesdays through Fridays from 4:30-6:30pm with half-priced appetizers and drinks. The Happy Hour on Wednesday runs all night. You can enjoy these specials at the bar or outside on the wonderful patio.

Competition on the Race Track

recently sat down with professional race car driver Frankie Montecalvo (http://frankiemontecalvo.com), who’s making a name for himself in the international racing world. We talked about competitive racing mindset. Barry Farber

Barry Farber: What type of preparation are you doing prior to the race? Frankie Montecalvo: Practice time is very short on a race weekend so I do a lot of different things before I’m even at the racetrack. If I haven’t been at the track before, the preparation is a little bit more intense. I will ﬁnd out information about the circuit—the bumps, the turns, the layout… everything. I can draw a map in my mind of any circuit I’ve already been to because I have drilled that into my memory. I visualize each lap and I watch a video of the car I’ve driven there. I sometimes go on a simulator but I am a very “seat of the pants” driver because I like to feel the car and the way it moves. Driving the actual car is much more realistic; a simulator really just helps me shake off the dust and get used to the track again.

I think about that last lap for motivation while I’m training in the gym and that pushes me farther.

BF: What goes on in your mind during the race?

BF: What is unique about race car driving over other sports?

FM: I try not to break my concentration; you’re in the zone and your skill set should automatically take over. The more you think about it the more you get out of the zone and can actually mess up (not a good thing on a race track). You want to allow your subconscious mind to utilize your trained skills.

FM: Racecar driving is a complete mental chess game. It’s very, very physical. Once you’re physically ﬁt as a driver it really comes down to your mental ability to focus and concentrate. With changes in the car and on the track you have to adapt quickly and not lose your focus.

The day before the race is more about what I want to accomplish in the race At times you obviously have to think about what you need to accomplish; that’s why I do a lot of (preparation) beforehand. Going into the race, things change and you really need to act on what’s coming at you, and how you’re moving forward. BF: Why is competitive drive so important? FM: I’m a very competitive person. I always strive to be the best at whatever I do. Racing is basically winning or losing and if you’re not on the top step you haven’t reached the maximum potential of what you can do. There’s no reason you can’t be the best if you push and try your hardest.

BF: Vince Lombardi once said, “Fatigue makes cowards of us all.” Talk about that from a racing perspective. FM: Yes, fatigue can happen both mentally and physically; that’s what you have to train for so it doesn’t affect your race outcome. When you are racing and you’re neck-and-neck with other drivers, your adrenaline is going through the roof so it’s so important to keep calm and relaxed, and have your physical and mental ability sharp. You cannot let fatigue set in during the race because it can hurt you by having an accident or losing the race.
