Innovative valve replacement surgery. Because you can’t be replaced. As New Jersey’s most extensive heart care network, RWJBarnabas Health performs more Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacements (TAVR) than any hospital or health care system in the state—and our outcomes far exceed national benchmarks in safety, life expectancy, and risks of complications, too. Available at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and Saint Barnabas Medical Center, patients usually go home only a few days after the procedure. For more information and to make an appointment with one of New Jersey’s top cardiologists, visit rwjbh.org/tavr.

elebrating its 20th year of client-focused service, Premiere Contractors in Montclair continues to specialize in timeless, classic renovations and remodeling. Now the company also offers design services, transitioning it to a full-service design/ build firm.

Bill Wojtowicz opened Premiere Contractors in 1997, focusing on residential kitchens, bathrooms, additions and whole house remodels, with a particular passion for restoring old homes. “We’ve intentionally kept the business small,” he says. “I manage all the projects personally, and we take on a limited number of projects at any one time.” In this way, he says, he can guarantee the level and quality of service that has always been important to him. In fact, he believes so strongly in quality workmanship and building trust with clients that the company offers a lifetime warranty on all workmanship.

Premiere’s design services are orchestrated by Bill’s wife, Heather. An initial in-home consultation includes a budget discussion; the company guarantees that once a project commences, no additional expenses will be incurred without the client’s written authorization. “We tailor the design to the individual client. LAW (Legal Assistance For Women) -

On April 6, 1917, the United States formally entered WWI by declaring war on Germany. German U-Boat attacks against unarmed vessels carrying American citizens and evidence of a German plot to ally with Mexico against the United States rendered American neutrality unsustainable, and so the United States joined in the conflict that had raged for two and a half years. The photos and stories told here in newspaper headlines, obituaries, photos, ephemera and letters provide a small glimpse into one such community. Did you know that during a 1” rainstorm, 623 gallons of water will run off a 1000 square-foot roof? Wouldn’t it be great to harvest some of that water and use it for flowers or to wash our cars instead of using precious drinking water? Rain barrels are part of the solution. They allow some of that water to be collected and used more slowly, giving it time to seep into the earth and be filtered naturally. Age 16+. P

arents seeking an engaging and rewarding summer enrichment program for their child need look no further than Newark Academy’s Summer Academic Session, which begins in late June and runs through the first week of August. The prestigious and popular Summer Session provides an unparalleled academic experience that includes advanced credit and enrichment and skill development courses, while nurturing curiosity and passion for learning. Robert Mallalieu, director of the Summer Session program for the past 33 years, has seen Summer Session enrollment grow from 167 in 1984 to 1,300 last year. “It’s not merely students from Newark Academy who attend our Summer Session,” he said. “The majority of our summer attendees are from various schools around the state.” The strength of Newark Academy’s Summer Session, he added, is a talented faculty and a wide range of courses and workshops. “While the curriculum we offer includes standards such as English, mathematics, and science, we also feature courses in the arts and technology, such as digital arts and photography that are popular with young people,” he said. The cutting edge STEAM program (Science Technology Engineering Arts Mathematics) has a lineup of new courses for 2017, designed to cultivate students in grades three through eight who have an interest in engineering. They include: • Introduction to Coding • Introduction to Engineering • App & Game Design • Advanced Drones • Advanced Robotics 22

Students who take advanced courses in chemistry, physics, and calculus at Newark Academy can also get credit for them in their respective schools when they return in the fall.

For younger children, Newark Academy’s Jump Start is a fun, interactive, and accelerated learning environment for rising first- and second-graders. “Jump Start was designed to ease the transition into these grades,” Mallalieu said.

How Your Pet May Improve Your Health

hen you’re sick and your cat curls up on your lap, you might think you feel a little better. If you take your dog to work, you may notice that the day is less stressful. Or if you travel with your four-legged friend, maybe you think you sleep better.

owners, veterinarians, doctors, employers and non-pet owners about these overall health benefits,” said Dr. J. Michael McFarland, group director, companion animal marketing at Zoetis. “We are hopeful this will help improve policies regarding pets in public places and also improve public health.”

Turns out you don’t just think you feel better, but your pet may actually make you healthier. A growing body of scientific research supports that this “pet effect” is real.

The research collected by HABRI shows a variety of potential positive effects of pets; for example, that having a dog or cat can lower your blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease. One study from the University of Minnesota even found that people who have never owned a cat have a 40 percent higher relative risk of death from a heart attack.

Animal health company Zoetis has launched a campaign called The Pet Effect to raise awareness about how pets make people healthier and how, by extension, the veterinary professionals who keep pets healthy are key contributors to human and public health. The company has launched this campaign with the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI). “We’ve learned that human well-being is enhanced because of a healthy relationship with a pet. What You Should Know BeforeHiring a Landscape Architect

W

hen it comes time to choose a professional to create the landscape design you have always wanted it can be daunting to weed out experts from run-of-the-mill landscapers. So how do you choose a Landscape Architect or Designer? And what should you consider before hiring a landscape team to complete a large or small installation? Start by asking yourself a few questions about the design and scope of your project and then begin to narrow down your results by looking deeper into company culture and training.

Available Space & Design Elements Redesigning your landscape begins with deciding on the amount of work to be done. The scope of the project you are committing to should be thought about in terms of available space, time and funds. Consider in your mind if you are trying to complete a remodel or a total overhaul. Understanding how far you are willing to ‘sink your teeth’ into the project will not only help you choose a company to work with but it will also begin to give you a realistic goal for your space.

Why a Landscape Architect? If you are experiencing problems with erosion or stagnate water in your landscape or if you have been thinking you want an outdoor kitchen, fireplace or patio seating area than hiring a Landscape 36

Architect is the safest and only legal way to accomplish the task. A Landscape Architect has the ability to make decisions and plans about grading and drainage issues in your yard due to their education and training. They can also properly engineer the design of retaining walls to stop erosion in accordance with township ordnances. Landscape Architects can generate detailed design plans for any property and complete permit applications with townships which is something a Landscaper is not able to perform. The permit application process is an essential but often difficult part of designing outdoor spaces due to the rigorous demands of state and local municipalities.

Quality Assurance & Customer Service A reputable Landscape Architect and design firm will have quality customer service from the first moment that they begin working with you. A seasoned design team will have plans and procedures in place for scheduling meetings, estimates and discussing design ideas. The best

Landscape Architects and Project Managers are flexible and capable of dealing with project changes and unexpected problems; their dedication and knowledge of the field has given them the ability to adapt. Seek out a Landscape Architect who is willing to guarantee their work and plant installations so that if an issue arises after the project is complete you have assurance that there is someone to call for help.

Organizations & Memberships Landscape Architects and design teams who are skilled and well qualified will have training and certifications in many different areas. Seek out a professional who can tackle the installations you desire in your design. Landscape Architects and design teams that are active in national organizations such as the National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP), American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) as well as state and local affiliations such as the New Jersey Landscape Contractors Association (NJLCA) are held to higher standards because they are established, knowledgeable and award winning.

Plan for Seasonal Maintenance S

ummer is just around the corner. Don’t sweat the heat— make sure you’re prepared for warm weather by calling Air Group for all your cooling needs. Seasonal maintenance will protect your system and ensure efficient performance, resulting in optimum home comfort. A seasonal maintenance call can catch small problems before they become larger, and more costly problems; and can significantly reduce the likelihood of a serious “in season” breakdown. A maintenance plan also extends the life of your equipment, increases cost effectiveness and ensures safe operation. Having your system checked by a professional from Air Group will provide peace of mind when the hot weather arrives. Being proactive with your maintenance, or with your replacement, you can avoid an “uncomfortable” situation—literally!

DAVID HARRIS GOLF INVITATIONAL Held in North Caldwell Annual Event Will Benefit the Give the Kids Hope Foundation and North Jersey Underprivileged Children

T

he Eighth Annual David Harris Golf Invitational to benefit underprivileged kids in New Jersey was held on May 15, at Greenbrook Country Club in N. Caldwell. David Harris of the NY Jets serves as the annual celebrity sponsor and the event attracts overwhelming participation by the entire NY Jets team franchise. This year, the team’s head coach, Todd Bowles was honored by the foundation as a 2017 Spirit of Hope award recipient for his support of the foundation and his willingness to help many children who are less fortunate believe that the world can be a better place. Over 40 NY Jets players and coaches attended the 2017 David Harris Golf Invitational Event, played golf and donated signed sports memorabilia for the auction. The 2017 benefit golf invitational will support needed funds to rejuvenate the outdoor recreation area and install a new fire pit at Camp Hope in West Milford, NJ where over 3,000 children will attend Summer Camp at no cost to them this summer. Additional funds will be appropriated in part for summer programs for disadvantaged youth at Turtle Back Zoo in Essex County. Other 2017 Spirit of Hope honorees were: John Currie, Passaic County Democratic Party Chairman and Gerhard Sanchez, Athletic Director for the Essex County Vocational and Technical Schools for their inspirational leadership in heading programs that have touched the lives of so many less fortunate children in New Jersey. Give the Kids Hope Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)3 charitable organization, directly benefits underprivileged children in New Jersey. The foundation was started in 2010 by Stephen R. Tilton

Jr. and Judith Schumacher-Tilton of Schumacher Chevrolet Auto Group to provide less fortunate children the opportunity for recreational and educational activities that they might not otherwise have access to, including a chance to engage in wholesome activities like going to summer camp, swimming in a well-fed pool, playing outdoor sports, singing by a campfire, taking a nature walk or enjoying an educational trip to the zoo. David Harris has become the face of Give the Kids Hope Foundation, inspiring many less fortunate youngsters with his enthusiastic participation and recalling that his own upbringing led him to join the group, saying with a smile “we grew up with so much love, we never knew we were poor.” Give the Kids Hope Foundation President, Stephen R. Tilton Jr. commented “We are very thankful to our celebrity chairman David Harris, coach Todd Bowles and the entire team of New York Jets players, for their continued involvement and enthusiastic support of the foundation and to Essex County Executive, Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr., and Passaic County Administrator, Anthony J. De Nova, III who have once again graciously volunteered to co-chair the event.” Participating corporate sponsors of the 2017 event include: Schumacher Chevrolet Auto Group, Lakeland Bank, Mariner Wealth Advisors, Investors Bank, Clifton Savings Bank, The Silver Foundation, Archer Attorneys at Law, Inserra ShopRite, Mountain Development, Cars.com, Sportstars, Comcast Spotlight, Verizon FIOS, DirecTV, Spectrum and Altice Media.

At Your SERVICE Dean Kapneck & Audrey Klein

European Wax Center to Join Retailers at The Corner at Livingston Circle By Cynthia Burns, Photo by Dan Epstein

Y

ou don’t get a second chance to make a first impression,” believes Audrey Klein, co-owner of European Wax Center (EWC) in Livingston. Making lasting first impressions in this business devoted to strictly to body waxing continues to be her goal. EWC offers body waxing services for men and women. Services include Brazilian wax, eyebrow, bikini, leg, upper lip, face and full body waxing, among others. “We’ve made waxing a way of life,” says business partner Dean Kapneck. He notes most clients are monthly visitors. “Waxing has become as routine as getting one’s hair styled, a manicure or pedicure.” With a constant eye towards expansion, Kapneck is excited that their EWC/Livingston will relocate to The Corner at Livingston Circle on Route 10. “We are delighted to be a part of what will become Livingston’s premier shopping center.” Clients, accustomed to EWC’s inviting atmosphere, trained staff, affordable prices and online booking will enjoy an additional space, great co-tenants, extended hours and ample parking. The secret to EWC’s loyal clientele, according to Klein, is the wax. EWC uses a hard, stripless wax made exclusively for the company that adheres to hair, not skin, making for minimal discomfort. Guests can enhance their waxing experience with Strut Lavishly™, a signature line of skin and beauty products that includes restoring hair serum and exfoliates that help to slow hair growth in-between visits.

All estheticians are trained to EWC’s high standards notes Klein. “Even if they’ve worked in the industry before, they are retrained according to EWC’s practices.” Kapneck adds that our centers have very low turnover and a very high level of customer satisfaction. We invite first-time guests to enjoy a complimentary wax (inquire for details). Klein recommends purchasing a Wax Pass® that lets clients choose waxing packages at a significant savings. Kapneck’s confidence in EWC, and its ranking as a leader in the body waxing industry with more than 600 franchises open and more to come in New Jersey and Maryland. The Livingston location recently celebrated its seventh anniversary. Kapneck admits that initially he didn’t have any knowledge about franchises or retail businesses. However, with Kapneck running the financial aspects of their franchises; Klein, the public persona; and Jake Kapneck running the Maryland operations of their EWCs, they continue to excel with European Wax Center. “It’s an amazing company; with an amazing product, and it’s up to us to make sure our guests enjoy the Ultimate Wax Experience,” claims Kapneck. Grand Opening of new Livingston location anticipated for September 1, 2017.

he Vein Institute of New Jersey was established in 1986 as the first institution in New Jersey devoted exclusively to the diagnosis and treatment of varicose and spider veins. Today with eight convenient locations, these board certified specialists are considered to be leading experts in vascular medicine. The Institute is renowned as one of the top teaching and training facilities in the world for the treatment and care of patients with venous disorders. A typical scenario for diagnosis and treatment at VINJ may include a physical exam and a 30-minute noninvasive ultrasound test, to determine areas of venous disease (dilated veins, faulty valves, and or areas of clot). The vascular specialist will clearly communicate the latest conservative treatment options and will include Clifford Sales, M.D. an individualized plan to follow to achieve optimum results. All of VINJ locations, have an accredited vascular lab/ testing facility on site. If a procedure is recommended, the noninvasive service is regularly preformed in the office in less than an hour with local anesthesia. Patients are back on their feet fully functional, walking normally out of the office only moments after the procedure is completed. “Just one of the considerations which makes The Vein Institute of New Jersey different from the other physicians attempting to treat patients with venous disease, is the fact that we are trained, boarded physicians with expertise in Vascular Surgery” states Clifford Sales, M.D. VINJ is happy to announce that in all cases where medical necessity is determined, services are covered by insurance. VINJ’s skilled pre-authorization team diligently pursues the carriers for approval and nothing gets scheduled until the client receives their coverage determination.

Simple Ways to Add Physical Fitness to Your Daily Routine

B

eing resourceful with your daily routine can deliver big payoffs when it comes to increasing your activity level. Incorporating physical fitness into your everyday activities can save you time and also burn calories, and it doesn’t have to take much time or effort. “For many people, the biggest obstacle to getting more exercise is time,” says Danielle Johnson, physical therapist and wellness physical therapist for the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program. “People feel stretched between their career, child care demands and family commitments. Thinking of spending an hour extra at the gym may feel overwhelming.” If you don’t have time to fit in a scheduled workout, try using daily tasks to incorporate fitness, Johnson advises. “You’ll still be able to reap the benefits of exercise by using small bouts of movement throughout the day. Two 10-minute walks, a few sets of stairs and some five-minute intervals of bodyweight squats, lunges or push-ups can add up to big health benefits.”

Specialty Dental Practice Here are some tips to get moving throughout the day:

Turn chores into exercise. • Mow the lawn or do some gardening. The physical benefit is good for your health, plus gardening can enhance your mood, and the food you grow offers great nutritional benefits.

Take your dog to the park, or play with them in your own backyard.

• Try bicycling to run errands. Leave the car in the garage and bring out your bike for a quick run to the grocery store.

Orthodontics, Speech Therapy & In-Office Sedation Available Hours: Tues-Fri 12-6pm, Fri & Sat 8-2pm

Pediatric Dentistry for children up to 18 years & those with special needs.

• Turn household cleaning into a mini workout. “For example, mopping floors gives your shoulders and back a workout, and can burn more than 100 calories in just 30 minutes,” Johnson says.

• Instead of going out for dinner or drinks with friends, do something physical, like taking a walk, going for a bike ride or engaging in a physical activity like tennis or bowling.

• Take your dog to the park, or play with them in your own backyard. A game of fetch is not only great exercise for your furry friend—it works your muscles, too.

• Join or start a sports team with your friends. Whether it’s softball, basketball or soccer, taking part in a sport you enjoy will improve both your physical and mental well-being.

Stay curious and improve upon what you’re already doing. • Do you already walk daily? Try walking faster or choose a challenging route with hills. • Take up a new summer outdoor sport, such as canoeing, paddle boarding or inline skating. • If there’s a cause you feel passionate about, try training to participate in a run or walk to raise funds. • If you play golf, walk the course and carry your own clubs instead of using a cart and caddy.

Gardening can enhance your mood, and the food you grow offers great nutritional benefits

“Every little bit counts,” Johnson says. “Research suggests that as little as 10 minutes of cardiovascular activity can make a big difference in your health and fitness measures. I often equate health to putting away money for retirement. Putting away savings, even in small amounts, will add up big over time. The same can be said for your health. Investing in opportunities to be active, even for short periods of time, adds up. The key is to be consistent.” (BPT)

hen it comes to pairing wine with food, even experts agree that desserts can pose a challenge. A wide variety of flavor combinations can make it hard to find the perfect selection to serve with your sweet treat. While there’s no exact science to wine pairing, these simple tips can help you make your selection.

Sweet Cheesecake

A good rule: the lighter the dessert, the lighter the wine. Avoid heavy reds for a sweeter dessert and instead pair with a crisp white like Chardonnay, such as Joseph Carr from Sonoma, California.

Citrusy Lemon Meringue Pie

Father’s Day BBQ & Clam Bake LIVE MENT ENTERTAIN TIO PA E ON TH

On the Patio

Lemon flavors can sometimes be polarizing, but complementing this dessert with an equally citrusy wine can work wonders. Try pairing with a foodfriendly pinot grigio or a sauvignon blanc.

Rich Chocolate Cake

Red wine with chocolate seems like a no-brainer, but not all red wines are created equal. For a richer delicacy like this devil’s food cake, try something like Villa Pozzi Nero D’avola, a more fruit-forward, easy-drinking red varietal.

Diamond MINDS

GET OFF BALANCE

3 Keys to Living a More Balanced and Rewarding Life “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” —Albert Einstein

H

ow do you attain balance in a world where you’re running constantly and always feeling overwhelmed and unfocused? How do you maintain a happy, healthy lifestyle and also accomplish great things at work without getting burnt out? Here are a few concepts to think about that can help improve the overall quality of your time at work and with your family.

1. Clear The Mind We’ve all heard still waters run deep. This is similar to how the mind works. When sitting still to rest or meditate, your mind becomes clear. New visions and direction can settle into place. It helps you clarify what is important. You can gain tremendous power from quieting the mind in a short meditation, even if it’s just a ten-minute break from your day.

Find a quiet place. Someone once told me to sit like a general on horseback to maintain the best posture. Breathe naturally and get in a centered state. Breathe in through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Concentrate on your breath. Your goal will be to attain “Mushin.” Mushin is a shortened version of a Zen expression which translates as “the mind without mind.” After a while, fresh ideas and new understanding starts to flood into your brain. I have gotten my most valuable ideas and insights during mini -meditations.

2. Push Yourself Outside of Your Comfort Zone When we push ourselves further than we think we can go, there is amazing satisfaction because there is no success without hard work. Remember this...hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard. When you’ve pushed yourself and put in 100%, it allows you to focus on your life outside work.

3. Build Your Own Mind Map I have my goals and action lists in digital form but the actual movement of writing

Barry Farber

has its own internal benefits. There is a study that shows college students retain 30% more information when they handwrite notes during class verses typing. I’m a big believer that until it’s written down it’s only a wish. I’ve been doing this for over 25 years. I call it my Spider Web. It’s a time and activity management tool that I use to manage all my projects and keep focused. Everything we work on is connected and from the first moment I wake up and throughout the day, I can view my web and keep on track. Most of us have a “to do” list or something linear that reminds us what our priorities and actions are. An organic circular view allows us to see the connections with the projects we’re working on. Here’s an example (without the names of each project) to give you an idea of how it allows you to see the connection of your goals: (Picture I’m sending you separately will be inserted here) Calming the mind, pushing yourself outside your comfort zone and having a clear picture of where you are and where you’re going can give you the peace of mind that people call “being balanced” in life.
