Artists in resident work in a variety of disciplines that include clay, jewelry, glass blowing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, weaving and photography.

ivingston 6th grader, Jordan Kooper, is the 2017 Pediatric Honored Hero for this years’ Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation’s New Jersey Chapter’s Take Steps walk. Jordan is motivating the local community to find cures by participating in the walk which takes place on Sunday, June 11, 2017 at Liberty State Park in Jersey City. Robert Mallalieu, director of the Summer Session program for the past 33 years, has seen Summer Session enrollment grow from 167 in 1984 to 1,300 last year. “It’s not merely students from Newark Academy who attend our Summer Session,” he said. “The majority of our summer attendees are from various schools around the state.” The strength of Newark Academy’s Summer Session, he added, is a talented faculty and a wide range of courses and workshops. “While the curriculum we offer includes standards such as English, mathematics, and science, we also feature courses in the arts and technology, such as digital arts and photography that are popular with young people,” he said. The cutting edge STEAM program (Science Technology Engineering Arts Mathematics) has a lineup of new courses for 2017, designed to cultivate students in grades three through eight who have an interest in engineering. The research collected by HABRI shows a variety of potential positive effects of pets; for example, that having a dog or cat can lower your blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease. One study from the University of Minnesota even found that people who have never owned a cat have a 40 percent higher relative risk of death from a heart attack.
Animal health company Zoetis has launched a campaign called The Pet Effect to raise awareness about how pets make people healthier and how, by extension, the veterinary professionals who keep pets healthy are key contributors to human and public health. The company has launched this campaign with the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI). “We’ve learned that human well-being is enhanced because of a healthy relationship with a pet. Now we want to educate pet

T
he Eighth Annual David Harris Golf Invitational to benefit underprivileged kids in New Jersey was held on May 15, at Greenbrook Country Club in N. Caldwell. David Harris of the NY Jets serves as the annual celebrity sponsor and the event attracts overwhelming participation by the entire NY Jets team franchise. This year, the team’s head coach, Todd Bowles was honored by the foundation as a 2017 Spirit of Hope award recipient for his support of the foundation and his willingness to help many children who are less fortunate believe that the world can be a better place. Over 40 NY Jets players and coaches attended the 2017 David Harris Golf Invitational Event, played golf and donated signed sports memorabilia for the auction. The 2017 benefit golf invitational will support needed funds to rejuvenate the outdoor recreation area and install a new fire pit at Camp Hope in West Milford, NJ where over 3,000 children will attend Summer Camp at no cost to them this summer. Additional funds will be appropriated in part for summer programs for disadvantaged youth at Turtle Back Zoo in Essex County. Other 2017 Spirit of Hope honorees were: John Currie, Passaic County Democratic Party Chairman and Gerhard Sanchez, Athletic Director for the Essex County Vocational and Technical Schools for their inspirational leadership in heading programs that have touched the lives of so many less fortunate children in New Jersey. Give the Kids Hope Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)3 charitable organization, directly benefits underprivileged children in New Jersey. The foundation was started in 2010 by Stephen R. Tilton
Jr. and Judith Schumacher-Tilton of Schumacher Chevrolet Auto Group to provide less fortunate children the opportunity for recreational and educational activities that they might not otherwise have access to, including a chance to engage in wholesome activities like going to summer camp, swimming in a well-fed pool, playing outdoor sports, singing by a campfire, taking a nature walk or enjoying an educational trip to the zoo. David Harris has become the face of Give the Kids Hope Foundation, inspiring many less fortunate youngsters with his enthusiastic participation and recalling that his own upbringing led him to join the group, saying with a smile “we grew up with so much love, we never knew we were poor.” Give the Kids Hope Foundation President, Stephen R. Tilton Jr. commented “We are very thankful to our celebrity chairman David Harris, coach Todd Bowles and the entire team of New York Jets players, for their continued involvement and enthusiastic support of the foundation and to Essex County Executive, Joseph N. ow do you attain balance in a world where you’re running constantly and always feeling overwhelmed and unfocused? How do you maintain a happy, healthy lifestyle and also accomplish great things at work without getting burnt out? Here are a few concepts to think about that can help improve the overall quality of your time at work and with your family.
1. Clear The Mind We’ve all heard still waters run deep. This is similar to how the mind works. When sitting still to rest or meditate, your mind becomes clear. New visions and direction can settle into place. It helps you clarify what is important. You can gain tremendous power from quieting the mind in a short meditation, even if it’s just a ten-minute break from your day.
Find a quiet place. Someone once told me to sit like a general on horseback to maintain the best posture. Breathe naturally and get in a centered state. Breathe in through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Concentrate on your breath. Your goal will be to attain “Mushin.” Mushin is a shortened version of a Zen expression which translates as “the mind without mind.” After a while, fresh ideas and new understanding starts to flood into your brain. I have gotten my most valuable ideas and insights during mini -meditations.
2. Push Yourself Outside of Your Comfort Zone When we push ourselves further than we think we can go, there is amazing satisfaction because there is no success without hard work. Remember this...hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard. When you’ve pushed yourself and put in 100%, it allows you to focus on your life outside work.
3. Build Your Own Mind Map I have my goals and action lists in digital form but the actual movement of writing

I’m a big believer that until it’s written down it’s only a wish. I’ve been doing this for over 25 years. I call it my Spider Web. It’s a time and activity management tool that I use to manage all my projects and keep focused. Everything we work on is connected and from the first moment I wake up and throughout the day, I can view my web and keep on track. Most of us have a “to do” list or something linear that reminds us what our priorities and actions are. An organic circular view allows us to see the connections with the projects we’re working on. Here’s an example (without the names of each project) to give you an idea of how it allows you to see the connection of your goals: (Picture I’m sending you separately will be inserted here) Calming the mind, pushing yourself outside your comfort zone and having a clear picture of where you are and where you’re going can give you the peace of mind that people call “being balanced” in life.
