INSIDE ESSEX By Melissa Kane

Pudsters is Coming to West Caldwell

T

his summer, Pudsters will open in West Caldwell, offering gourmet custom ground burgers, frankfurters, fries and milkshakes, in a unique, family-friendly atmosphere. “Pudsters truly is a new, innovative, unique burger franchise concept,” founder Michael Sobon explains. “I had this idea to fuse the nostalgic 1950s-era feel with the best of what modern technology has to offer. Families can come and enjoy a great meal and atmosphere at an affordable price without sacrificing experience. That’s what Pudsters is—a truly unique dining experience that won’t break the bank.” In keeping with Sobon’s vision—which is being executed with the help of Pudsters President and CFO Patrick O’Brien—the restaurant pairs a classic style jukebox with an app-based music request system, a digital menu board displaying art crafted by a chalkboard artist, and online ordering through the Pudsters App. The restaurant will also feature a Let’s YO! Yogurt, an offshoot of Sobon’s Montclair frozen yogurt franchise. For up-to-date information on the opening of Pudsters, located at 632 Bloomfield Avenue in Caldwell, visit their website at www.pudsters.com, follow them on Twitter, @pudstersnj, or visit their pages on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest.

In addition, for every monetary donation over $50 made to either organization, Rover Ranch and Spa will give your dog a free bath, nail cutting, brush out and blow dry. “People who rescue animals have big hearts,” Bratman says. “It’s such important work, and it makes me feel good to be able to help.” Rover Ranch and Spa is located at 16 Passaic Avenue, #1, in Fairfield. Roseland, NJ - Recently, Frank Pucher (CEO/Owner) of Fitness 121 Personal Training has been named one of 3 finalists for The Personal Trainer of the Year Award by IDEA Health & Fitness Association.

The response by Pucher was met with gratitude & humility. “I’m honored by the consideration, and obviously very proud. The last several years have afforded me the opportunity to coach & mentor countless other fit pros through workshops, conferences or retreats that I’ve spoken at. This enables me to Inspire Fitness in an exponential way. But the truth is, after all this time, the thing I still love the most is the one-to-one connection with my clients each day in my studio.” What advice does he offer when on the road or at home? “From San Diego to Grand Rapids to Roseland, NJ, my formula for fitness is simple: Train Hard - Eat Right - Live Inspired. If you can do that, you’ll not only achieve better fitness, you’ll live a better life!” To contact Frank Pucher or learn more about his studio, visit the website: Fitness121Online.com IDEA Health & Fitness Association is the world’s leading organization of fitness and wellness professionals including personal trainers, group fitness instructors, fitness directors and fitness business owners. These professionals coach, train and influence millions of health-minded individuals. IDEA professionals are found in over 80 countries, together they seek to “Inspire the World to Fitness®.”

Applegate Farm Celebrating 165 Years with Homemade Ice Cream, Sweet Treats and Family Fun

I

n a town that is home to a state university, an art museum and a bustling downtown that requires 26 municipal parking lots to accommodate residents and visitors, it might be surprising to find a dairy farm on a busy street in Montclair Township. But from just outside its entrance on Grove Street, passersby can see the farmhouse, silo and barn that signal their arrival at Applegate Farm. Celebrating its 165th anniversary this year, Applegate Farm was opened in 1848 by the Sigler family and is actually 20 years older than the township itself. The farm has changed hands over the decades, but is now owned by Jason Street, who bought the property from his aunt and uncle in 1994. Street and Melinda, his wife and co-owner, live in the farmhouse with their two children, four-year-old Nicholas and one-yearold Noelle. The Streets will be kept busier than usual this season by hosting family fun nights every week to commemorate this milestone in Applegate’s history. “Every Wednesday, everyone is invited for movie night. Before the movie there will be a DJ playing children’s and family music, as well as games and races,” Street says. “On Sunday nights, there will be a magic show. It will be great family entertainment. It’s our way of giving back to the community and the patrons.” All of the events offered at Applegate Farm on both Wednesdays and Sundays are free of charge, and Street hopes to recreate the family feeling that was so prevalent in years past. “Families don’t do enough together,” he says. Starting out with the timeless favorites, chocolate and vanilla, in 1929, Applegate 36

this anniversary, particularly in the past year and a half, Street has concentrated on the importance of keeping up with competitors by adding items such as frozen yogurt and “sweet treats” to the menu. “If we want to be at this location for the next 165 years, we need to diversify,” he explains. “Even cold drinks are now competing with ice cream. We offer freshlybaked, homemade cupcakes that include red velvet, chocolate and vanilla. We make our own hand-dipped chocolate treats like chocolate covered strawberries, and we make our own nonpareils.” The future of Applegate Farm means more to Street than just a successful

“Every young person needs to find his or her own way,” believes Street. “This was my once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It’s the American Dream.”  Applegate Farm 616 Grove Street, Upper Montclair 973-744-5900 www.applegatefarm.com

HEALTH & BEAUTY By Julie Jacobs

SUMMER SAFETY How to Be Wise While Outside Prepping and Participating • Stretch before engaging in physical activity, to both warm up your muscles and increase your flexibility. Find a flat, clutterfree surface, then breathe normally and keep steady. Hold each stretch for 30 seconds without bouncing and overextending your range of motion, and then repeat the series. • Wear the right clothing and gear. Choose comfortable garments and don helmets, goggles, padding, gloves and wrist guards as appropriate. And protect yourself from the harmful rays of the sun with a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. • Check your equipment to ensure it’s in good working order before using. Also, know how to repair your equipment, whether it’s a bike tire or floatation device, and bring a repair kit along with you. • Educate yourself by taking a professional lesson, particularly if you’re new to the pursuit. If you’re hiking to high-altitude areas, make sure to learn how to acclimate. • Pay attention to the weather before, as well as during, your activity. Heed reports about such adverse conditions as temperature changes and stay aware of any changes in temperature and the like while you’re out and about. • Keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Just pace yourself so that you don’t exhaust your supply at the outset. You might want to pack such healthy snacks as, such as fruit and granola bars, too. • Know basic first aid, especially for heat-related illnesses. Carry a well-stocked first-aid kit (see sidebar), and an emergency signaling device and whistle if you’ll be in isolated spots. Also, locate the nearest ranger station before you head out.

The old joke goes says that to get to Carnegie Hall, you need to practice, practice, practice. To stay safe outdoors during the summer months, you need to prepare, prepare, prepare! By planning prudently and taking the necessary precautions once you’re out, you can help prevent injuries from occurring while you’re playing, hiking, biking and more. 44

• Go with at least one buddy and chart a plan for possible emergencies. And inform someone back home of your itinerary, apprising them of when you’ll return. • Stick to marked areas, avoiding those that are closed to the public, whether in water or on land. When hiking or biking, be careful on rocky, uneven terrain and near trees and bushes that may block your view. • Build in frequent rest stops to recover and rejuvenate. Reconsider going at all or turning back if you’re feeling achy or drowsy.

Bugged by Bugs There’s no getting around it: Summertime means more bugs, and many of them, including mosquitoes and ticks, can transmit disease and infection. To help keep insects at bay, steer clear of infested areas like high grass, stay inside from dusk to dawn if possible, and apply repellant as directed. Look for products with 20% DEET, the primary ingredient in most repellants. You also can treat your clothes with permethrin, a common synthetic insecticide. When it comes to ticks, check yourself over yourself as soon as you’ve finished your activity. If you find a tick, grab a pair of fine-tipped tweezers to carefully remove it. Should you subsequently experience body ache, rash, fever and/or other symptoms, consult with your physician. Once home, shower and wash and dry your clothes promptly.

Should Injury Happen While there’s a correct way to fall to reduce injury—keeping your hands in a fist, falling forward on your forearms or knees, or falling backward onto your backside—sometimes harm still occurs. In such cases, think RICE: rest, ice, compression (and immobilization), and elevation. Repeat until your condition has improved and you’re able to seek medical attention. And if you find a tick, grab a pair of fine-tipped tweezers to carefully remove it. Should you subsequently experience body ache, rash, fever and/or other symptoms, consult with your physician.  FOR MORE INFORMATION: www.CDC.gov; www.ezineartiles.com; www.fs.fed.us/recreation/safety.

Summer Beauty Saviors

r

ising temperatures call for waterproof makeup, frizz-fighting hairsprays and other summer saviors. These products can withstand the heat: Skin: BB creams and CC creams are the b-b-best for summer because they are lightweight, but provide long-lasting coverage and contain sun block and other skin-enhancing ingredients. Try dior Hydralife BB Crème, Pürminerals 4-in-1 mineral tinted moisturizer or Hard Candy CC Cream. Face: Pürminerals “Glow all Year” kit includes a universally flattering bronzer, plus a gold-flecked lipgloss and a perfectly shimmery highlighter stick. Eyes: For eyes that withstand the effects of water, try Hard Candy Shadowholic 12-hour waterproof eye crayon and Lash Ink four-day lash stain mascara, which tints lashes without getting clumpy. Hair: Spray Lush’s Sea Salt Spray on damp hair, twist into a loose bun and let dry for tousled, beachy waves. Finish your look with a few dabs of Lush’s new Gorilla perfume, SuN; it just screams summer. (Hardcandy.com, purminerals.com, sephora.com, lushusa.com)

Money for Muscles

P

eople are often reluctant to sign up for a gym membership because they don’t want to commit to the monthly fee. However, most gym memberships range from $20 to $60 a month—and although many have sign-up fees, they are also known to drop them for a special

sale or a great negotiator. Still need to fork up that extra cash? Make coffee at home—saving just $1.50 every week day adds up to an extra $30 in your wallet every month. Bring your lunch to work, instead of spending $5 to $7 twice a week buying lunch, and save up to $56. or, go out to dinner a little less frequently—those $20+ per-person checks add up.

Runaway Appetite

a

study published in The Journal of Obesity observed the effects that moderate-intensity exercise had on participants’ appetites. on the first day of the study, participants were broken up into two groups. one group ran for 60 minutes and the other group walked for 60 minutes, while researchers monitored how much energy each participant was expending, and drew blood to check for changes in appetite-affecting hormones. on the second day of the study, all participants rested for 60 minutes. on both days— after the hour of exercise or rest—researchers monitored how many calories the participants consumed after they were given permission to eat whatever they wanted from a variety of food. The result? Participants were the hungriest after the hour of rest, consuming nearly 300 more calories than they had burned; walkers were hungry, but consumed around 50 calories more than they burned; and runners weren’t very hungry, and on average consumed 200 calories less than they had burned. DIAMOND MINDS By Barry Farber

F

THE RICHNESS OF RESEARCH

or over ten years I’ve been writing Diamond Minds and I must have mentioned this adage in more ways than one: “You become what you think about.” I first heard this on an audio program called the “Strangest Secret” by Earl Nightingale. It has always reminded me to ask myself, “What are you reading?” “Who are you surrounding yourself with?” “How does your environment impact your actions?” This focus has served me well over the years in many different ways. For one, whenever I work with a sales organization I ask to interview not only their top performers, but the customers they sell to. I learn unique insights into an industry and it changes the way I think about the client’s business as well as how I present to and work with my customers. That additional research not only builds confidence in how to customize a solution but constantly reminds us of the fundamentals that can be applied to many situations.

Surround yourself with people and information that is useful. Have you ever read a book that has inspired you and made a difference in your life? Read it again. Read it every year. You will be amazed at how the message can change every time you go back to it. It gets richer because your experiences have changed the way you look at the information in the book. All quality research creates a better position to move forward with more intelligence. And that’s the point—to move forward and take action with the information. Research and learning without action suffers; both working together provide clarity and truth. In our latest book, “Success Secrets of Sales Superstars” (Entrepreneur Press 2013) my co-author, Robert L. Shook and I featured a variety of individuals ranging from sports agents to CEOs and even a top yacht salesperson who is legally blind. People ask how he sells well when he can’t see. The answer is that he listens. That’s how he does his quality research to act upon with his customers.

The work on this book project allowed Barry Farber the information to sink in at a deeper level because the richness of the subjects’ unique stories about building relationships multiplied—first when we did the pre-interview research on them, second when we conducted the interview, third when we transcribed the interview, and the fourth time when we read the interview… and maybe a fifth time when we listened to these top producers’ interviews live. You can listen to them at www.blogtalkradio.com/barryfarber. Ask yourself what type of research you’re doing in your area of expertise that will enhance the value of what you’re worth. What are you reading, who are your mentors, what and who are you surrounding yourself with that will help you become the person that can achieve the goals you’re shooting for? You do become what you think about all day long. The repetition of learning valuable ideas through different sources helps build knowledge that lasts, that you can act on, and that can help you succeed. 

Barry Farber consults with corporations, professional athletes and entertainers helping them market their products and land more deals. He’s the best-selling author of 12 books translated into 25 foreign languages with over one million copies sold. His next book, Success Secrets of Sales Superstars will be released April 2013 by Entrepreneur Press. You can see him on QVC selling out unique and innovative inventions. He’s a featured guest on CNN, Fox, CNBC and hosted over 400 Radio and Television shows in New York City, Washington and on the Comcast Television Network. Visit him at: www.barryfarber.com or email him at: barry@barryfarber.com. Listen to the new show: www.blogtalkradio.com/barryfarber
