T

he Gloria Foundation, a non-profit initiative helping victims of domestic violence, has recently partnered with Design Consign of Fairfield as their main fundraising arm. Design Consign supports the foundation with new and nearly new high-end items that include furniture, clothing and accessories.

Left to right: Jason Intrabartolo, grandson of Gloria. Sam Intrabartolo Son. Janet Ryan daughter. Ralph Mazucca brother, Karen Arakelian daughter and founder of the Gloria Foundation, Karen Danko volunteer, Daria Senaldi, Donor and Rita Mazucca niece.

Karen Arakelian, founded of The Gloria Foundation in honor of her mother, Gloria. “She was and continues to be an inspiration to me. Gloria was always smiling even through the adversities in her life,” states Arakelian. Funds from the Foundation have already been designated for Jersey Battered Women’s Service (JBWS), Junior League s of NJ, Family Promise, and Friends of Safe Home (FOSH).

As President of White House Designs for Life of Fairfield and Wayne, Arakelian has been in the furniture business for over thirty years and has often had customers ask if she could take old furniture off their hands. Her new partnership with Design Consign allows her to make that possible, and the store’s customers are thrilled to know that the profits earned will go toward the foundation to help support victims of domestic violence. Arakelian decided to add clothing, shoes, accessories, handbags and jewelry so that people can shop who are not in need of home furnishings. She will be adding children’s, men’s and sports clothing shortly. Design Consign is located at 1221 Bloomfield Ave. in Fairfield. Local Eateries to Offer Budget-Friendly, Fixed-Price and Diverse Menus

T

he Township of Bloomfield will hold its Third Annual Restaurant Week from Sunday, August 3rd through Saturday, August 9th, 2014. During this week, an anticipated twenty plus local eateries will offer prix fixe menu selections designed to attract both new and returning customers. The special prix fixe, multi-course options offered by each participating restaurant encourages diners to try several different eateries during the week. To enter the drawing, customers can log onto Bloomfield Restaurant Week’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/pages/Bloomfield-Restaurant-Week and simply join the mailing list. He notes that they “want to highlight the variety and different ethnic restaurants in Bloomfield.” Rodgee Cao, owner of Spice Thai Cuisine, is equally enthusiastic about this event and the opportunity to interact with the dining community. For him, “food is universal and that’s what excites him about this event.” For an updated list of participating restaurants and menus visit: www.BloomfieldRestaurantWeek.com

NY/NJ Chapter of NFL Alumni Association to Support Give the Kids Hope Foundation Golf Outing and Charity Event

T

ilton Automotive Group has announced that its Give the Kids Hope Foundation, Inc. will be a beneficiary of this year’s Charity Golf Classic sponsored by the NFL Alumni NY/NJ chapter. The fundraiser, featuring many legendary retired NFL players who are partnered with foursomes to golf, will be held on Thursday, July 24 at Wild Turkey Golf Club at Crystal Springs Resort, 3621 Route 94 in Hamburg, N.J. The annual NFL golf tournament is held in tweny regions across the United States; the NY/NJ chapter, headed by Bart Oakes, selects several New Jersey-based charities each year to benefit from the tournament. The organizations are always youth-, health- or education-related. Lee Saltz, a former quarterback and committee chairman of the NY/NJ Charity Golf Classic, learned about Give the Kids Hope Foundation and felt its mission aligned well with the NFL Alumni Association’s community outreach theme, which is “Caring for Kids.” Saltz states, “After hearing about how the Tiltons’ foundation was started, its mission with Camp Hope and seeing the work it has done there, we knew that adding it as a partner in this year’s tournament was a great fit.” To register to play or to sponsor the event, contact John Carlucci at (203) 561-8547 or visit www.NFLAlumniNYNJ.org

Pucks for Parks Initiative Program at Presby Memorial Iris Gardens

T

he New Jersey Devils, along with PwC, a multinational professional services network, have recently joined the New Jersey Tree Foundation and Essex County representatives to plant trees at the Presby Memorial Iris Gardens in Upper Montclair as part of their “Pucks for Parks” initiative. The program was launched in 2013 as an effort to promote environmental sustainability by planting at least two trees in a New Jersey park for every Devils win during the 2013-14 season. Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr. stated that they “appreciate the New Jersey Devils, PwC and the New Jersey Tree Foundation for bringing their Pucks for Parks program to Essex County.” The trees planted in Presby Memorial Iris Gardens will replace those that were lost during Hurricane Sandy. The placement of the trees will both increase the iris population by enhancing natural pollination activity and help support the Garden’s educational arbor program, launched in 2001. The effort to plant trees in parks throughout New Jersey represents a small but crucial initiative for preserving the environment and making the world a healthier, cleaner and more beautiful place in which to live.

Essex County Opens Walking Path Around Orange Reservoir

O

n Monday, May 5th, Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. and Orange Mayor Dwayne Warren announced the 2-mile walking path around the Orange Reservoir in the Essex County South Mountain Recreation Complex was completed.

“With this project, we are beginning to realize the potential of the Orange Reservoir as a recreation destination. Having a continuous walkway around the perimeter of the waterway creates unbelievable opportunities to enjoy nature, link to hiking trails in South Mountain Reservation, and observe different perspectives of this magnificence open space that were never possible before,” DiVincenzo said. “None of this would be possible without Orange Mayor Warren and the City Council agreeing to open the land to the public and acting as our partners,” he added. Visitors can access the walkway at the paddle boat launch area off of Cherry Lane in Essex County South Mountain Reservation, at the Essex County Safari miniGOLF and McLoone’s Boathouse Restaurant at the corner of Cherry Lane and Northfield Avenue and from the parking lot of Essex County Turtle Back Zoo. Neighbors Helping Neighbors The Best of Essex Contest Joins MEND to Help Curb Hunger in Essex County By Deborah Schapiro, photos by Dan Epstein

H

ere in largely middle-class Essex County, the idea that millions of Americans go to bed hungry may seem like a remote problem. The reality, however, is that growing numbers of the hungry live not in stereotypically poor regions like Appalachia or tribal reservations, but in suburbs like our own. In addition to government assistance, area residents suffering from food insecurity or insufficiency often avail themselves of local food pantries. Many of these pantries are members of the organization MEND. This is why the Best of Essex Contest, run by Suburban Essex Magazine, is supporting MEND in an effort to provide food for the hungry in Essex County. MEND (Meeting Emergency Needs with Dignity) was established some thirtyfive years ago by eight or nine Essex County churches; its membership has since grown to eighteen pantries and twenty-one supporting churches. Notes Jamie Anthony, Chairman of MEND’s Board of Trustees, “we have a very diverse group of formal and informal supporters: Presbyterian, Baptist,

Catholic, Jewish, Hindu, AME, Methodist and Muslim.” The majority of MEND’s clients are working poor individuals. According to Anthony, “the entire purpose of having food pantries is to provide food for families to take home and prepare together so that people can feed their families with dignity.” Anthony additionally notes that many pantries also provide food kitchens for the homeless because they are unable to prepare the food themselves. According to Anthony, the MEND coalition served 90,000 people last year, up from 81,000 in 2012 and 65,000 in 2011. He says “the cold hard truth is that there seems to be an ever-increasing number of people in need. The improving economy Bethel Church of Love & Praise Jamie Anthony from MEND with LeWanda A. Pleasant (from Church pantry)

doesn’t seem to be reaching our clients; they are still losing their jobs or having their hours cut back. It’s the same story all over the country.” As a result, MEND is not anticipating a reduction of people served in 2014, as the number of both working poor and homeless recipients continues to rise. The MEND food pantries receive their supplies from various sources, including corporate and foundational support. The Community Foodbank of New Jersey, based in Hillside, sends over food such as day-old bread donated by Pepperidge Farm. Additionally, of course, the member congregations hold regular food drives. In addition to food, many of the MEND congregations offer other types of support. For example, says Anthony, “a number of our pantries also offer ‘clothing barns’ of donated clothing. A year ago Marriott gave us thousands of sheets and towels, which was just wonderful.” Anthony continues, “one of our pantries also has a nursery, another has a women’s shelter. We also have different bank employees come and give talks to families on budgeting. The services offered are dictated by each individual congregation’s needs.” These needs actually increase during the summer. Anthony explains that, “since there is no school in July and August, the children who are eligible for free lunches are not getting them. Also, people in general are more into getting-away mode; they are thinking about their summer vacations. All of this obviously puts more pressure on our pantries to make up the difference.” An astounding thirty-eight percent of the clients that MEND serves are children.

Volunteers at Interfaith Food Pantry of the Oranges: Stephanie Gentile, Peggy Baggaley, Cyndy Wyatt, Diane Stein, Janet Schwamm, Jodi Cooperman, Lisa Goldberger-Ozer and Debbie Goodman (right-left)

MEND can always use additional help, he notes. “We need volunteers, and we need talent. We don’t just want people to help us with food drives, although we certainly love them. What we are really searching for are people who can help us help others. If you have fundraising or marketing expertise or a legal background, we’d love to meet you.” In addition, giving back to MEND truly makes a difference in the lives of others. The average food package distributed by food pantries has a value of twenty dollars per package. Each food package typically provides three meals for a person for a minimum of three days. This means that a donation of eighty dollars used to supply

food packages would feed a family of four for a total of thirty-six meals.

The summer deficit is part of a seasonal cycle that he has observed: “Many schools hold food and clothing drives in the spring, especially April and May. Things wind down by June, and summer is tough for us. Things pick up in the fall, especially late fall. People really have a giving mentality from Thanksgiving through the December holidays and even into January.”

Jodi Coopernab and Diane Stein, food pantry manager

Currently, according to Anthony, “there are plenty of volunteer opportunities to help with food drives, administrative duties and a number of other things.” He encourages people to “please help if you can do so, we would appreciate any help that can be provided, whether it’s money, food or volunteer assistance.” Anthony cites David Black, founder and CEO of Suburban Essex Magazine, as someone with marketing expertise who has been helpful to MEND. Black, who had long wanted to work with a charitable organization, decided that Suburban Essex would adopt MEND for an awareness campaign. He explains, “I love the fact that this organization is small and right here in Essex County. They haven’t gotten much press, and we can certainly help with that.” In addition, notes Black, “we hope to honor MEND with a community service award along with all of the ‘Best of Essex’ winners in November.”

P

eople are encouraged to donate on the MEND website, www.mendnj.org, or to send a check in the mail. The Best of Essex contest also provides the opportunity to give online through their website www.MENDsuburbanessex.org, where people can purchase food, including much-needed fresh produce, which will be delivered directly to MEND and the food pantries.

David Black, publisher of Suburban Essex, with his parents, Jewel and Mitchell Black

Black views his partnership with MEND as a tribute to his father: “My spirit of giving and giving back was inspired by my father, Mitchell Black. He had a small print shop in East Orange, where I started Suburban Essex twenty-three years ago. The name of his shop was Printing Delite, which seems appropriate: he is delighted by our work with MEND.” David Black’s father strongly believed in the necessity for businesses to give back to those in need; therefore, he continues in his father’s footsteps in his own work to spread awareness and get as much help as possible for the hungry of Essex County.

The NEW Aging

Baby Boomers Set the Trends, Stay on the Go By Julie Jacobs

B

aby boomers are an interesting and influential lot. Born between 1946 and 1964, the oldest of the bunch are now over 65 and lead lives much different from those of just a generation before. They’re more active, for starters, as well as more demanding (in a good way) for all that life has to offer. And why shouldn’t they be? Currently, baby boomers account for a staggering 75 million Americans, and the 65+ segment is expected to represent nearly one-fifth of the United States population by 2030. Here we take a look at what life is like for today’s boomers.

Home and Hearth

With thousands of baby boomers turning 65 every day and still wanting to live independently, the trend in housing for this group has veered away from the traditional institutional life to communities focused on mutual interests, backgrounds and age ranges.

New State-of-the-Art Office

Some involve “cohousing,” where residents live in private homes but can take advantage of communal dining and recreational spaces. Often, they cater specifically to people 55 and older and offer a range of activities, like book and gardening clubs, which promote social networking. And while many boomers look to simplify their living quarters after their kids have left the nest, they don’t necessarily want to downsize into small apartments. In fact, because many boomers continue to work, they’re able to afford the extra square footage along with amenities that both provide them with a comfortable lifestyle and free them from the rigors of mowing laws and shoveling snow. Experts say boomers have always led the way when it comes to lifestyle, even with respect to the cars we drive. While once they opted for big automobiles, now they choose small-utility vehicles (SUVs) or compact cars—albeit models loaded with all the latest features, technological and otherwise.

Staying Healthy

But boomers can nurture their good health by practicing the following:

Without a doubt, baby boomers have redefined their daily living with a focus on health and wellness. Toward this end, they want products and services that address not only their medical needs, but also their emotional and spiritual needs (think yoga and meditation). They also seek out life experiences and are keen to try things, which helps them keep in good mental and physical shape. In a recent AARP survey of 760 boomers, 43% of respondents considered their physical health to be very good or extremely good.

• stretching gently and exercising at an appropriate pace every day. • working their brains by doing crossword puzzles and other mind games. • talking to their doctors about calcium and Vitamin D supplements for strong bones, and B12 supplements for healthy nerves and blood cells. • getting screened regularly for blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Overall, the boomer generation is expected to live longer than previous generations—to age 84 on average. This rise in longevity, however, does come at a price: an upsurge in chronic age-related health conditions such as arthritis, heart disease and diabetes. As a result, boomers are starting to turn in ever-increasing numbers to palliative care, a fast-growing specialty that addresses the relief of ongoing pain and discomfort.

Always.

Reinventing Retirement

Retirement for most baby boomers no longer means lazy days, countless hours teeing off, or even a move to Florida. Instead, it involves broadening horizons, learning new skill sets, and in some cases embarking on a second career. More and more, the 65+ set is applying its knowledge

Care for Life at Green Hill.

At Green Hill you’ll always get the care you need, even if you exhaust your financial resources. No matter what.

and experience to starting new businesses that help realize lifelong dreams. Boomers also are participating in programs aimed at the greater good. Take AARP’s Experience Corps, for example, which engages older adults as tutors, mentors and literacy volunteers for students nationwide. And when they’re not teaching others, boomers look to learn themselves. Many universities and colleges are beginning to offer opportunities for seniors to attend classes for free or for a nominal fee, while also enjoying and taking part in campus life. Through such community affiliations, baby boomers are immersing themselves in creative and intellectually stimulating environments. And if there’s homework involved? Well, that surely brings them back to their younger days! Getting to the Root of Your Pain: Dr. Andrea Buccino shares the benefits of seeking a chiropractor

W

hen Andrea Buccino attended junior high school years ago in the Essex County Nutley Public School District, she was diagnosed with scoliosis, an abnormal curvature in the spine. After several treatments from a local chiropractor, she became fascinated with the human body and began to study everything she could learn about the alternative medical practice. Dr. Buccino, now a certified chiropractic sports physician, recently marked a milestone, celebrating three years of owning her private practice at 6 Pompton Ave. in Cedar Grove, opened in June 2011. When she’s not visiting patients or teaching anatomy and physiology classes at William Paterson University, she monitors sudden sports injuries on the sidelines at sporting events near and far. “The approach that we take as chiropractors is that we try to get to the root of the problem - figure out what’s not working, what’s dysfunctional, what’s causing the pain and then work to fix it in a manner that does not require any drugs or surgery. There is a place for medicine and surgery, but if you can go the least invasive road and get results, then you’re heading in the right direction,” she explained. In this issue Dr. Buccino answers some of the most frequently asked questions.

What is a Chiropractor? We are typically thought of as people who just treat the back, and that’s not necessarily true. We treat joints, bones, muscles, physical ailments and physical injuries. We work with athletes, we work with non-athletes. We work with people who suffer from headaches, migraines, problems that may be coming from the neck or from the muscles that lead up to the neck, in addition to shoulder injuries or knee injuries from sports.

When should a patient call a chiropractor? Patients can come in to see a chiropractor whether they’re in pain or not. Sometimes patients just want to feel a little bit better on their range of motion, or their shoulder is restricted and they want to get it fixed or find an approach to help them have better mobility.

What type of treatments and results do patients receive? Each patient is evaluated similarly, whether they’ve had a sports injury, a history of sports injuries or simply hurt themselves getting out of bed in the morning. I do a lot of hands-on and soft tissue muscle work, with a focused massage in sessions lasting up to 30 minutes, depending on when and what the patient’s injury was. Poor posture is often associated with the pain. I also instruct patients on stretches and exercises that can be done in the comfort of their own homes. Most patients notice some relief around the fourth or sixth visit, then sessions begin to taper off. If there’s no improvement, we’ll try a different approach or refer the patient to a new physician.

How should sports injuries be handled? People are often apprehensive about coming in for treatment because they’re afraid the doctor will tell them to stop doing the sport. I don’t tell my patients to stop; instead I have them modify their activity. If there are certain aspects of their workouts that can’t be done while they’re injured, there are other things patients can do.

What is trending in Chiropractic medicine right now? Today, parents, coaches and doctors are increasingly well versed in identifying, evaluating and treating a concussion. Be safe rather than sorry. If your child took a nasty hit, pull him or her out of the game. Championship or not, this is a child’s brain.

Keep Kids SAFE All Summer Long S • Teach children to never play on or around a lawn mower, even when it is not in use. They should never be permitted to walk along side, in front of or behind a moving mower.

ummer is a time of playground fun, camping, swimming and other outdoor activities. When kids are outdoors, their sense of adventure and curiosity soars, which can, unfortunately, lead to a higher risk of injuries. In fact, according to the Safe Kids Worldwide organization, each year one in four children 14 years of age and younger will sustain an injury that requires medical attention. The good news is that many of these injuries are preventable by following a few simple tips and learning how to avoid accidents and injuries.

• Children under six years of age should be kept inside the home while mowing.

Fire Safety Simplified Every hour, approximately 16 children are injured from fires or burns, according to the Safe Kids Worldwide organization. Use these tips to keep safe around fireworks, grills and other heat sources:

Here are some tips to help your family safely enjoy all the fun summer has in store.

• Teach kids never to play with matches, gasoline, lighter fluid or lighters. Make a habit of placing these items up and away from young children.

Drive with Care

• Do not leave children unattended near grills, campfires, fire pits or bonfires. Always have a bucket of water or fire extinguisher nearby when burning fires.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, motor vehicle injuries are the leading cause of death and acquired disability for children and teens. These tips can help you and your children to stay out of harm’s way while in or around vehicles. • Teach your children to buckle up every time they get into a car, regardless of the length of the car ride. Buckling children in age- and size-appropriate car seats, booster seats and seat belts dramatically reduces the risk of serious and fatal injuries. • Check around your parked car for children before you pull away. Teach children to be aware of moving vehicles and to wait in safe areas where drivers can see them.

• To ensure a safe celebration, leave fireworks to the professionals. • If your child is injured by fire or fireworks, immediately take them to a doctor or hospital.

Playground 101 The Centers for Disease Control revealed that emergency departments treat more than 200,000 children ages 14 and younger for playground-related injuries every year. Before you let them play at the park or school playground, be sure they keep these precautions in mind:

• Accompany young children when they get in and out of a vehicle. Hold their hands when walking near moving vehicles, in driveways and parking lots.

Mowing Matters While it may seem like just a common household tool, thousands of children are injured in lawn mower accidents each year, some with severe effects.

• Use appropriate and properly fitting safety equipment when participating in any sport, such as helmets and goggles, which can greatly reduce the risk of head and eye injuries. • Take your children to playgrounds with shock absorbing surfaces. Choose parks and playgrounds that are appropriate for their age. Check for hazards or broken equipment and continuously supervise children while they play.

• Teach children to use playground and sports equipment properly. • Remind children that pushing, shoving and crowding on the playground can result in accidents and injuries.

Make a Safe Splash While playing poolside may be a blast, the Safe Kids Worldwide organization also revealed that drowning is the leading injuryrelated cause of death for children between 1-4 years of age. Fill your family’s summer days with these safe practices around the water: • Teach children to never go near or in the water without an adult present. Children and adults should never swim alone. • Give children your undivided attention when they are swimming or near any body of water. • Always have your children wear a Coast Guard approved, properly fitting life jacket while on a boat, around an open body of water or when participating in water sports. —Family Features

DIAMOND MINDS By Barry Farber

The Power of Foresight “Every great work, every big accomplishment, has been brought into manifestation through holding to the vision, even though just before the big achievement, comes apparent failure and discouragement.”

Barry Farber

–Florence Scovel Shinn, metaphysicist

hen the great Michelangelo began as an apprentice sculptor, his teacher made him work in a quarry for several months, breaking and chipping rocks. During this time, he learned how rocks break apart, how they chip and how they react under pressure. As a result, when he began his career creating sculptures, Michelangelo understood how to work with stone. Before he began each piece, he studied the stone he was going to use; thinking about what would happen when it was cut, where it could be cut and where it would break. Before he ever took a chisel in his hand, he understood the rock he was going to use.

He began with a solid block of marble. Since he had studied, he knew the secrets of the stone. He looked at the rough rectangle of solid stone before him and saw the vision of David that he had created in his mind. Then he chipped away everything that was not David. Michelangelo saw David so clearly that he made the marble yield to his plan. Was every chip perfect? Most likely not. Did he make mistakes or have to make adjustments as he went along? Perhaps. In any case, however, nothing could erase that vision of David from his mind.

Before Michelangelo began to sculpt his famous piece, David, he sculpted him in his mind. He knew exactly how he wanted David to look, envisioning his proportions, curves, angles, stance and expression. Michelangelo saw David in his mind’s eye.

This phenomenon is called foresight. It is looking ahead with a clear vision of what the future will look like, even before it is reality. It is not magic or fortune telling. It is having a vivid concept of what a person wants his or her life to look like, directing his or her actions toward that vision, and then chipping away everything that is not helping him or her create the desired picture. Foresight is a powerful phenomenon. As people can learn from Michelangelo, having a vivid vision before beginning a task, as well as the willpower to learn and produce, can lead to the creation of a masterpiece.

“I would give all the wealth of the world, and all the deeds of all the heroes, for one true vision.” –Henry David Thoreau
