Look for Monarch Butterflies at Trinity Academy’s Newly Planted Garden
M
aster Gardener, Mrs. Jane Kinkle gave an informative presentation on Monarch Butterflies to Trinity Academy’s Third Grade on Thursday, June 15. The presentation included a slide show about the stages of the butterfly’s life and how the monarch butterflies migrate to the different areas of the United States. She also discussed the feeding habits of the monarch butterfly and the importance of providing feeding areas (way stations) for the butterflies in our area. During the presentation, the students learned about the types of flowers that butterflies prefer—flowers with flat tops— including milkweed, lavender and coreopsis.
Trinity Academy
Art Teacher, Mrs. Crump, prepared a small garden plot near the Pre-K playground for the location of the monarch butterfly way station. The students then planted several butterflyfriendly flowers in the spot.

ay goodbye to Valley Jewelers and hello to Craig Brady Fine Jeweler! The family owned fine jewelry store has changed its name and moved locations. A grand opening party held on June 17 kicked off the new location at 493 Bloomfield Avenue in Montclair, with a portion of the party’s proceeds going to the Montclair Township Animal Shelter. The beautiful new location continues to be home to unique, one-of-a-kind jewelry in a low-key atmosphere. The new name of this fine jeweler perfectly reflects the hard work of owner Craig Brady, who has been crafting and creating jewelry for over 30 years. In addition to his custom designs, the store offers closely-curated collections made of genuine gemstones and precious metals. Despite their new name and location, the jeweler’s workmanship and integrity continue to be essential aspects of their business. This full service, family owned store also does repairs, restorations, and appraisals.

John & Julie Ostering Essex County’s Only Organic Farm is Open For You By Christine S. Maxwell, photo by Dan Epstein
M
eet John and Julie Ostering, dedicated volunteers at Morgan’s Farm/Museum located in Cedar Grove. Julie, as president of the Cedar Grove Historical Society, oversees the daily operations of the farm. John, as the only organic farmer in Essex County, maintains extensive vegetable gardens on premises. All proceeds raised from the sale of the produce from the gardens are used to preserve this historic property. How did the Organic Farmers Stand develop? John: I always had an interest in gardening. A believer in organic gardening, I studied these methods extensively. We started the project in a 50 x 50 square foot area five summers ago. It has grown now to 18,000 square feet with 70 raised beds. We grow lettuce, kale, chard, radishes, tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers. We invest in the finest soil to produce healthy crops that provide the highest nutritional value. Originally, we sold our produce as a vendor at a local Farmers Market, but now we maintain our own stand at Morgan’s Farm. Our stand is open from May through October. On Friday evenings, we cut the vegetables and harvest green, leafy vegetables early Saturday mornings. Our stand is up and running on Saturdays from 9am to 1pm. Why does the Organic Farm Stand Benefit the Community? John: In an era of genetically-altered and processed foods, it is important that we provide our community with foods they can trust. Our customers know the quality and the source of the foods they eat. They eat foods cultivated by their neighbors. We are also care for our environment; we use no harsh pesticides or chemicals and support only healthy crops. We take great pride in providing the best in locally-sourced foods for our community. What is the history of Morgan’s Farm? Julie: Morgan’s Farm was built in 1845 and was farmed almost continuously until 1985. In 1985 owner Courtenay Morgan donated the farm to the Township of Cedar Grove. Today, the farm is a museum and home of the Cedar Grove Historical Society. There is also a barn storing some the original farm equipment, and 14 acres of passive farm lands, dedicated to recreational sports and concerts. John and community volunteers maintain organic gardens here. Morgan’s Farm is the only remaining farm in the township.

The “Lamp Doctor” Is In Anne Filkin Lamps & Shades is one-stop shopping & expert service By Janis Hashe
A
fter 31 years in their circa-1858 building, Anne Filkin Lamps & Shades is no less than a Caldwell community institution. Says Donna Filkin, who took over the shop in 2010 after her mother’s passing, “I used to say, ‘Mom, you’re a brand.’ She would laugh, but it’s true.” Donna maintains her mother’s focus on helping people enhance their homes with new lampshades, table and floor lamps, finials, and a small selection of chandeliers. “I strive to offer expert, friendly service and quality products at a reasonable price,” she says. Describing lamps as “essentially decorative pieces of art electrified to have a functional benefit,” Donna explains that customers often bring in lamps from the 1930’s thru to the present day that have been passed down in families. “They want a fresh, updated look, and a new shade can transform a lamp.” Based on style preference, Donna advises on shapes, fabrics, colors and sizing. The store carries a large in-stock selection, can do special ordering, and custom work if requested. A re-lining and recovery service is available if the client would like to keep an existing shade or frame.
Customers looking for a new lamp find two floors of distinctive lamps in traditional-to-transitional styles. “I look for interesting lamps you don’t see everywhere,” Donna says, noting that she recently bought a selection of Murano glass and had it made into lamps. The store now also carries a lamp line offering dozens of shapes and sizes in 24 colors, so the customer can customize at an affordable cost. When a client comes in with their lamp, Donna asks: What room will this be in? Is it for reading or for accent lighting? “There are no lamp police,” she laughs,” as there is almost never one perfect shade.” But, “I show people lampshade shapes they’ve often never thought of and can help with getting the right sizing—and they are delighted at the results.”

You can also tailor your herb garden to your family’s favorite dishes. If they love pasta and pizza, try growing basil, oregano, thyme and garlic chives. For Mexican flavors, include cilantro, Mexican tarragon, epazote and lime basil. To complement Asian cooking, test your skills with lemon grass, Thai cinnamon basil or mint. You might want herbs to brew tea with such as mint, chamomile, lemon balm or verbena, or bergamot.

Herbs are versatile plants that can be tucked into an existing planting area, grown in a dedicated plot or even planted in containers indoors by a sunny window. Most herbs are also attractive plants and can double as ornamentals mixed in with vegetables or flowers. Some, such as creeping thyme, rosemary and lavender, can even be used as ground covers or short hedges. Regardless of where you plant your herbs, it’s important to provide the correct growing conditions to help ensure that they can thrive and produce intensely flavorful leaves. Most herbs grow best in full sun, but some can also tolerate light shade. To prepare soil in a new planting area, remove sod if necessary and amend soil to create the ideal growing environment for your herbs. Planting on sloping ground or in pots or raised beds provides ideal drainage. Mixing organic material like compost into soil can help improve soil drainage, fertility and water retention.

Dr. Jeff Leary Fact Checks 4 Knee and Hip Replacement Myths By Rhonda L. Rivera, photos by Dan Epstein
Dr. Jeff Leary
K
nee and hip replacement surgeries are on the rise, especially in the 45-54 age bracket. Below, Dr. Jeff Leary with the North Jersey Orthopaedic Group sets the record straight about these life-enhancing operations.
Urban Legend #1: Knee and Hip Replacements Only Last Ten Years FACT √: See the Doc in Twenty (or more) Studies looking at long term survival of hip and knee replacements show roughly a 0.5% failure rate per year—which means that 90% are still good at twenty years. Dr. Leary notes that improved materials currently being used will likely be viable well past 2037.
Urban Legend #2: Do Both Knees at the Same Time or Forget the Second One FACT √: Doing Them a Few Months Apart is Preferred Dr. Leary generally does not perform double knee replacements because of increased surgical risks. Due to advancements in surgical techniques and pain blockers, patients quickly recover from the surgery and are ready for the second about three months later. In addition, having one knee that was not operated on makes for a more stable rehabilitation.
Urban Legend #3: Patients Must Check Into Rehab for Weeks Following Surgery FACT √: Patients Recuperate at Home Following surgery, Dr. Leary’s patients are home within two days. Home therapy is prescribed for two weeks, after which they walk—aided by a cane or independently—to their post-surgery visit. Outpatient rehab will be ordered for approximately a few weeks after hip replacement or up to three months following knee replacement.
Urban Legend #4: Minimally-Invasive Surgery Produces Best Results
About Dr. Leary: Dr. Leary, a New Jersey native, graduated from Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 2005. He is a retired, decorated Major from the United States Air Force, having served two combat support tours with a Special Operations Surgical Team. In addition to joint replacements, Dr. Leary handles orthopedic trauma and reconstructive surgeries.
FACT √: Not Every Time
For more information or to schedule a consultation:
While patients prefer the smaller scars associated with minimallyinvasive surgeries, they do not always result in maximum benefits. “A surgeon must be able to see in order to put the implant in, which directly translates to how well it works,” Dr. Leary explains.

Banish Backyard Pests
A
s the weather gets warmer, mosquitoes can prevent homeowners from reaping the benefits of living life outside. These tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the pest control experts at TruGreen can help combat mosquitoes outside of the home: Remove Standing Water. Mosquitoes generally lay eggs near water, so once a week take time to dump anything that may hold water in the yard. This includes buckets, kiddie pools and birdbaths. Don’t overlook items like toys, planters and flowerpot saucers. For containers intended to hold water, like cisterns or rain barrels, regularly check that the lid is secure so mosquitoes can’t gain access. A finely woven mesh is a good alternative if there is no lid. If you can’t cover the container and won’t be drinking from it, use a larvicide to treat the water. Be Wary of Unexpected Reservoirs. Natural features such as shrubbery and tree stumps can also collect water,

and they may be more difficult to remedy. Keep dense shrubs thinned and pruned. Increasing the air flow can make these areas less attractive. If removing a tree stump is impractical, a professional can guide you in proper treatment. Apply a broad-application pest eliminator. Use an outdoor insect spray or professional service to kill mosquitoes in areas where they rest all over the yard. A professionally applied treatment targets pests where they live, and the company’s professionally trained specialists use an innovative mosquito control formula to treat all areas of the yard where mosquitoes hide, including trees, shrubs, mulched areas and all types of ground cover. John Bell, a board certified entomologist, says, “Most people protect against mosquitoes by using a repellant or citronella candles, but these methods do

not target the places mosquitoes hide including low-hanging limbs, ornamental foliage, potted plants and ground cover. The TruGreen Mosquito Defense treatment program targets these places, eradicating the mosquito population in homeowners’ yards and allowing people to spend more time living life outside.” For more year-round lawn care tips, visit TruGreen.com/mosquito. —Family Features Photo courtesy of Getty Images Source: TruGreen

HEALTH Profile
STEM CELLS:
Nature’s Way of Triggering the Body’s Repair Mechanism By Cynthia Burns, Photos by Dan Epstein
F
or more than 9 years Thomas Agesen, MD, Gerard Malanga, MD and Jay Bowen, DO at New Jersey Regenerative Institute have been using stem cell therapy and other non-surgical strategies to treat osteoarthritic conditions. Here, Dr. Agesen explains harvesting stem cells and using them to repair bone, joint and cartilage damage.
Why is stem cell therapy a viable treatment option? People are looking for alternatives to traditional surgical approaches. Stem cell therapy is used to repair injuries to soft tissue caused by excessive athletic activities, repetitive motions or injuries. Patients with acute or chronic injuries have exhausted the gamut of other non-surgical treatments. We can treat muscle and joint injuries, bone and cartilage damage and tendon issues nonsurgically, which reduces discomfort and recuperation time.
How does it work? A stem cell’s job is to maintain and repair the tissue in which they are found. Stem cell therapy triggers the body’s own repair mechanism. Cells collected from bone marrow can generate bone and cartilage activity. Other procedures use fat cells, adipose tissue, support the formation of blood and connective tissue. There is no need for general anesthesia or conscious sedation. A specialized x-ray machine, fluoroscopy, identifies the precise area
(Left-right) Thomas Agesen, MD & Jay E. Bowen, DO for the doctor to draw the cells from bone marrow. Low suction lipoaspiration or liposuction collects cells from adipose tissue that can be processed and injected . We use ultrasound and/or x-ray guidance to precisely re-inject the cells into areas that have been injured.
What is the recuperation period? It is a lot less than surgery! Patients generally are restricted to low impact activities for about a month. The goal is to build up gradually to higher impact activities.
How many treatments are required? Most patients require only one. However, if the injury is severe, additional treatments may be necessary.
What is the success rate? Success is not based on a percentage, but rather, outcome studies. Most patients improve in symptom relief. One way to measure success is the WOMAC scale, a standardized measurement of functional capacity for patients with osteoarthritis. We have an outcomes database that our patients participate in. Overall, if a patient is a good candidate, we have a high success rate.

Dining
Easy Entertaining
W
armer weather is often welcome for a variety of reasons, but there’s something nearly irresistible about enjoying a meal outdoors. Whether you plan to gather on the patio or pack a picnic for the park, dining al fresco is an easy way to turn a meal into a full-fledged event. Begin your meal with chicken sandwiches crafted on the grill and a seasonal pasta salad on the side then finish it with a glass of white wine. Perhaps serve a dessert perfect for al fresco entertaining—cheesecake topped with fresh berries and mint. For more al fresco recipes and entertaining tips, visit Culinary.net.
When it comes to pairing wine with food, even experts agree that desserts can pose a challenge. A wide variety of flavor combinations can make it hard to find the perfect selection to serve with your sweet treat. While there’s no exact science to wine pairing, these simple tips can help you make your selection.
Sweet Cheesecake A good rule: the lighter the dessert, the lighter the wine. Avoid heavy reds for a sweeter dessert and instead pair with a crisp white like Chardonnay, such as Joseph Carr from Sonoma, California.
Citrusy Lemon Meringue Pie Lemon flavors can sometimes be polarizing, but complementing this dessert with an equally citrusy wine can work wonders. Try pairing with a food-friendly pinot grigio or a sauvignon blanc.
Rich Chocolate Cake Red wine with chocolate seems like a nobrainer, but not all red wines are created equal. For a richer delicacy like this devil’s food cake, try something like Villa Pozzi Nero D’avola, a more fruit-forward, easydrinking red varietal. For more tips and wine selections, visit winefix.com. Suburban Essex
Few things go better with warm weather than firing up the grill and enjoying a meal in the fresh air. These chicken sandwiches, which are topped with Brie, pesto, fresh tomato and arugula on sourdough bread and toasted on the grill, are just the excuse you need to get outside and enjoy the weather with family and friends. Find more patio-perfect recipes at chickenroost.com.

GO FOR GRILLED CHICKEN
Summer 2017
Recipe courtesy of the National Chicken Council
Servings: 4 1/2 cup olive oil, divided
1/4 cup basil pesto, divided
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 large tomato
1 clove garlic, minced
8 slices crusty sourdough bread
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
4 ounces Brie, thinly sliced
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
1 cup packed baby arugula
1 pound thin-cut chicken cutlets
Heat grill to high. Combine 1/4 cup olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, salt and pepper; pour into plastic zipper bag. Add chicken, seal and marinate at least 30 minutes. Grill chicken 2-3 minutes, turn and grill another 2-3 minutes, or until chicken registers internal temperature of 160 F. Remove and reserve. Spread each piece of bread with 1/2 tablespoon pesto. Slice tomato into eight slices. Place chicken on four bread slices. Top with Brie slices, arugula and two tomato slices. Top with remaining bread slices, pesto side toward tomato. Brush outside of each sandwich with about 1/2 tablespoon of remaining olive oil. Place on grill, reduce heat to medium and grill 2-3 minutes per side, or until bread is nicely toasted and cheese is melted. Remove from heat, cut each sandwich in half and serve.
SERVE A SENSATIONAL SIDE This pretty side dish is made for sharing. Made with fiberrich, whole-wheat pasta, colorful plum tomatoes and balanced out by the crisp, bright flavors of balsamic vinegar and fresh basil, this pasta salad is perfect for outdoor events and gatherings. Definitions of Success By Barry Farber
W
hat is your definition of success? After asking this question in thousands of interviews for books, columns, radio, TV and customer research it becomes very clear that the top answer is always focused on the ability to serve others around you and provide an opportunity for growth beyond yourself. When we build the people around us it comes back to us in many powerful ways. This month a few local business owners share their insights on success:
Barry Farber
Josh Sanders
Jamie Raskulinecz
Bob Fienstein
CEO of Next Generation Trust Services and the finalist in Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award
President of Planet Honda
Vice President of Sea Breeze
“My definition has changed a lot. When I was much younger it was all about financial success. The older I get and the bigger our organization gets, the more success becomes less defined by what I do or what I achieve and more about watching the people we have here achieve success. Seeing employees grow and prosper and purchase homes, get promotions and send first generation kids to college—to me that’s the real success. It’s not just enjoying the fruits of your own labor but being able to see other people realize their dreams through something you helped provide an opportunity for.”
“I am the fourth generation owner of the business and handle all operations. We manufacture sodas, teas, juices and cocktail mixers. We also make Bosco Chocolate Syrup right here in NJ! We pride ourselves on the longevity of our employees. We have one driver that has been with us for 45 years and he lifts 60-pound boxes every day. Seeing people succeed is a very rewarding experience. I also think success is the ability to solve problems, improve how we do things with the goal of perfecting our processes so our business runs smoothly for everyone including our employees, customers and vendors.”
“My definition of success is being able to do what you want to do when you want to do it and in the process help others to become successful. I like to give back and one of my proudest moments is adopting a family. My partner and I found a family through the mayors’ sunshine fund in West Orange. We helped support a mother and father with three children who were going through tough times. We started out taking the mom grocery shopping every week. We also saw the conditions they were living in and made one of our rentals available to them at a reduced rate. We also worked with others we know to donate furniture and worked with them for six years. And now they are a successful family on their own. We made a tremendous difference in somebody’s life and that’s what it’s all about… Paying it forward.”
