Kent Place School Student Honored with National Award

T

he National WWII Museum in New Orleans has named local student Laura Mills, of Kent Place School, as a 2018 Billy Michal Student Leadership Award recipient. Laura has taken her love of history and created a website the past two years for the National History Day competition, demonstrating her passion for exploring how history shapes people, perspectives, and policies. The national honor is awarded annually to one student in each state who has maintained a strong record of volunteerism, demonstrates school and community activism, and helps implement creative solutions to recognized problems. The leadership award was created in honor of Billy Michal, who was a child living in Louisiana during World War II. At six years old, Michal helped his one-room school win a statewide scrap paper-collection contest during the war, proving that every citizen could contribute to victory. “It’s extremely gratifying to recognize students throughout the nation for the wonderful contributions they make to their local communities,” said Stephen J. Watson, President & CEO at The National WWII Museum.

MAGIC Photography by Dan Epstein

Summer 2018

Y

ou’ve got to watch this guy! When you’re around West Caldwell resident David Corsaro, watch him as he makes things disappear, then reappear. He makes thing multiply, turns things on fire… right in front of your face. He will tell you things there is no way he ever should have known, dropping jaws and stunning folks left and right. A marketing analyst by day, magician by night, David has been featured in extended tours in England and Japan. He also performs regularly off-Broadway in “Monday Night Magic” at the Players Theater in NYC and regularly at fundraisers for the Lions Club, The Wounded Warrior Project, Habitat For Humanity and more.

“ It was after the birth of

his twin sons, Matthew and Daniel, that his magic took another deeper personal path.”

Now David is trying to make Juvenile Diabetes disappear. It was after the birth of his twin sons, Matthew and Daniel that his magic took another deeper personal path. Matthew at one, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. That galvanized Corsaro, and in addition to his work as a member of the Board of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, he’s very involved using his magic to raise funds. Every year he and his wife Lauren organize an event which he hosts called: “Martinis & Magic” an evening of “Cocktails and Amazement,” which features the magic of David, along with another magician ever year, at Calandra’s Mediterranean Grill (who donate the space and the food). The show always sells out and raises significant funds for Diabetes research. To learn more about “Monday Night Magic” check out his website at: www.davidcorsaro.com, and to learn more about “Martinis & Magic” and how to make a reservation for this annual sold out event, or simply to donate, check out: www.miraclematthew.com. His performances are nothing short of, well, magical.

Backyard Party Ideas

T

hrowing a party and need an idea? With just a little planning, you can turn your ordinary backyard into anything you want it to be.

A Water Park Who says you need a pool to cool off on hot days? Create a backyard water park with stations like Slip ‘n’ Slide, sprinklers, inflatable water play pools and water balloons. Serve guests popsicles, funnel cake, hotdogs and other waterpark treats. Be sure to have plenty of beach towels on hand and a designated area for those guests who’d prefer to stay dry.

A Movie Theater Host a film night under the stars by moving your home theater outside. Create “stadium seating” by putting blankets towards the front of the viewing area, reclining chairs behind those, and then regular lawn chairs in the back. Decorate your backyard in theme with the movie you are screening and serve popcorn. To get the real movie theater experience, use a high-quality projector, such as those from Casio, which combine a laser and LED light source to produce optimal visuals. Their Intelligent Light Control feature senses ambient light and automatically adjusts the projection brightness accordingly to ensure that no matter the time of day or lighting conditions, you’ll have good visuals.

Suburban Essex

With these same ideas and just a few snack and decoration swaps, you can host your friends for any big televised event!

presents…

A FOCUS ON

Summer Camp

EDUCATION

Relive the camp experience with some friendly competition. Assign all your guests to teams and then start keeping score. A prominent score board with the current stats and some motivating music will keep guests on top of their game. Include classic feats of strength and coordination like tug-of-war and a three-legged race, but don’t be afraid to branch out to include games that use the mind, such as trivia. Complete the day with an awards ceremony.

Meet the Author Event Presenting young writer Lucy Tan and her debut novel “What We Were Promised.” After years of chasing the American dream, the Zhen family has moved back to China. Settling into a luxurious apartment in Shanghai, they join an elite community of Chinese-born, Western-educated professionals. From a silk-producing village in rural China, up the corporate ladder in suburban America, and back again to the post-Maoist nouveaux riches of modern Shanghai, the book explores the question of what we owe to our country, our families, and ourselves. MASSAGE For More Than Just Special Occasions

B

elow are six systems of your body that can benefit from massage either directly or indirectly. There are many different types of massage but most offer similar benefits.

THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

Massage can improve circulation to the joints, which can reduce inflammation and increase the elimination of toxins and waste products kept in the muscles and blood supply around the joints.

THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

The relaxation of massage can have a balancing effect and help to increase the movement of food and waste products through the digestive system.

THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM

Massage is extremely important in stimulating the body’s immune system. When massage strokes are directed toward lymph nodes, it is believed that toxins can be eliminated out of the body.

THE MUSCULAR SYSTEM

Massage increases flexibility in the muscles due to muscular relaxation. Some movements relax and stretch muscles, reducing muscular tension and cramping. Muscles tired by exercise are restored faster than by rest.

THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

A soothing massage can provide relief from irritability and can help with insomnia and tension headaches.

THE SKELETAL SYSTEM

As the muscles become more flexible indirectly by massage, joint stiffness and pain can be reduced.

t’s time to welcome fresh air, enjoy outdoor barbecues and run around at the park with family and friends. While embracing these warm activities, you may also face the dreaded symptoms of allergies.

However, allergy season doesn’t have to keep you indoors. Pediatric health expert Dr. Tanya Altmann offers these tips to help manage and prevent common symptoms.

PAIN?

Avoid the allergy Avoid what you are allergic to as much as possible. If you are allergic to tree and grass pollens, limit your time outdoors. Consider taking part in activities without as much exposure to tree and grass pollen, such as gymnastics or swimming.

Spend time outside in the afternoon

While exercise and playing outdoors are important (and fun), try to stay inside during the morning hours when pollen counts are typically at their highest, and instead opt for outdoor workouts and activities later in the day.

RELAX and be

TRANSFORMED into a MORE CONFIDENT person

Dr. Peck’s Rhinoplasty experiences have made him a leading expert in conservative Rhinoplasty.

Protect your face Shield your eyes with sunglasses, keep your hair pulled back or wear a hat to prevent pollen from contacting your face.

Wash your pets Your pets are also vehicles for transporting pollen. Wash them after being outside so they don’t bring pollen into the house. Talk with your veterinarian regarding the best practices for pet washing.

Close windows Keep bedroom windows closed to prevent pollen from entering. If you love the fresh air, open non-bedroom windows in the afternoon or evening when pollen counts are lower, or opt for indoor fans and air conditioning.

Nasal reshaping is Dr. Peck’s passion, which is why Rhinoplasty is a major focus of his practice. Dr. Peck has built a reputation for offering superior Dr. Richard Peck Rhinoplasty to any patient visiting his office requesting this surgical procedure. He accepts challenging cases that many doctors decline and prides himself on honesty during the consultation process. A plastic surgeon's reputation depends just as much on doctor/patient interaction as on the quality of the work. Our office is staffed by friendly professionals dedicated to making you feel comfortable and secure in your decision to have Rhinoplasty.

Wash pollen off Bathe kids and change clothes after being outside to remove pollens from their hair, faces and clothing. Pollens are airborne and microscopic, so you can’t always see them. Wash hair at night to avoid sleeping in pollen.

Do your laundry Pollen can linger on clothing, so try to wash clothes after they’ve been worn, especially after outside play. Use laundry products that are made without dyes and perfumes, such as Clorox 2 Free & Clear Stain Remover & Color Booster. They’re gentle for people who have sensitive skin or allergies, but tough on stains when paired with detergent. For more ways to keep your clothes clean during allergy season, visit Clorox.com. —Family Features Photo courtesy of Getty Images Source: Clorox

or most people, a good night’s sleep is a given. But for those with sleep apnea, which occurs when patients stop breathing for ten or more seconds at a time during sleep, sleeping can be difficult and exhausting. Taking a trip to the dentist may not be the first thought for those suffering from sleep apnea. But at D&G Dental, their dentists have completed advanced training to provide sleep apnea therapy that can help patients to improve their quality and quantity of sleep. For those diagnosed with sleep apnea, the traditional treatment is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). Unfortunately, this treatment isn’t always ideal as many patients find it difficult to adjust to. Oral appliance therapy, offered at D&G Dental, is often a better option. These oral appliances are custom crafted and comfortable; they shift the jaw forward slightly, allowing patients to sleep and breathe deeply. Says Dr. Med Dawoud, DMD, FICOI, of D&G Dental, “These oral appliances are a great treatment for sleep apnea.” If you have sleep apnea or think you may be suffering from this sleep disorder, schedule an appointment for a consultation with D&G Dental.

All About Rhinoplasty with Dr. Richard Peck

N

asal reshaping is plastic surgeon Dr. Richard Peck’s passion, which is why rhinoplasty is a major focus of his West Orange practice. As a leading expert in conservative rhinoplasty, he accepts challenging cases that many doctors decline and prides himself on honesty during the consultation process. So what should you know about rhinoplasty, and how is the procedure done? Says Dr. Peck, “I do a closed rhinoplasty where there are no scars. Everything is done internally through the nostrils.” One thing patients might now know is that our noses can actually change as we get older–they can droop and expand with age. Because our noses can change with time, “The ideal age for a rhinoplasty is around sixteen, but if you want to improve your appearance you can have a rhinoplasty at any age.” A person has to be psychologically ready to change their appearance before a procedure, which is why the professionals at Dr. Peck’s office are dedicated to making patients feel secure in their decision.

What You Need to Know About Your Feet & Ankles Q&A with Podiatrist Dr. Matthew Wachtler

W

ith sandal season in full swing, it is important to remember that we need to take care of our feet and ankles. At Cedar Grove Foot & Ankle Specialists, PC, Dr. Matthew Wachtler and his team are extensively trained in all aspects of podiatry. Here, Dr. Wachtler shares insight on a variety of foot and ankle problems patients face. Will my shoes cause bunions or hammertoes? In short, probably not. Bunions and hammertoes are mostly genetic. However, wearing certain shoes can accelerate their progression or make them symptomatic. Don’t get me wrong, high heels on occasion are okay, but regularly wearing shoes which cause your toes to curl or be pushed together can make an otherwise unassuming bunion worse.

How bad does removing an ingrown toenail hurt? Not as bad as you’d think. The toe is numb during the procedure and relief from the offending nail is usually significant within a day or so. Waiting too long to have it treated properly can cause an infection and delay the resolution. Dr. Wachtler

Do I have to treat a plantar wart? Yes. Although sometimes plantar warts resolve on their own with little intervention, this is less likely. More commonly, they stick around, become painful and can spread. There are many ways to treat warts; some are painful and some are not. Sometimes getting rid of a wart is a process, so starting sooner rather than later is helpful.

How does Diabetes affect your feet? Diabetes affects a lot of things, some of which include your eyes, kidneys and your feet. When diabetes affects your feet, it can damage your circulation and your nerves. Strict blood sugar control, daily foot checks, proper shoes and regular foot evaluations can help to prevent complications of diabetes.

As a runner, do I have to stop running if I have achilles tendonitis? Short answer–yes. Typical overuse injuries like achilles tendonitis are worsened by not allowing them to fully recover before returning to activity. However, cross training and some other treatments can help to reduce down time. Learn more about Dr. Wachtler and the services that Cedar Grove Foot and Ankle Specialists offers at www.cedargrovefoot.com.

Diamond Minds

The Lonely Game of

“Follow the Follower” By Barry Farber

Barry Farber

M

any of the greatest ideas, inventions, cures and successes are developed when an individual takes an approach which differs from that of leaders before him or her. Often, the key to success is breaking away from the pack and following what the heart and mind has to say. The problem is that sometimes people are afraid to be different because they want to be accepted by their family, friends and peers. For most, this begins at a young age. Children wear the same types of sneakers and dress the same way in order to avoid standing apart from the crowd.

“Excuse me,” said the shopkeeper, “but I’ve been watching you do this every morning, every day for four years now. Can you tell me why?” “Certainly,” said the man. “I’m the foreman down at the mill. I blow the quitting whistle at five o’clock every day, and I want to be sure that my people get out on time.” “You’re kidding me,” said the shopkeeper. “I’ve been setting my grandfather clock to your five o’clock whistle all these years!”

“I find that the very things that I get criticized for, which is usually being different and just doing my own thing and just being original, is the very thing that makes me successful.” — Shania Twain This trend even follows individuals into adulthood. When people get a new job, they first look around to make sure that they are doing the same things that their co-workers are doing. When they see that others are doing what is familiar to them, they feel more comfortable about their own behavior and actions. The problem, however, is that many people are losing out on a plethora of incredible opportunities. People should always be asking, “is the person I’m following going where I want to go?” Years ago, in a small store on Main Street, a shopkeeper placed a large grandfather clock in his front window. The next morning, he saw a man walk by, take out his pocket watch, adjust the watch, put it back in his pocket and walk away. Every morning for the next four years, the shopkeeper observed this morning ritual. Then, one morning the shopkeeper was out sweeping the sidewalk when the man passed by, took out his watch, adjusted it, and put it back in his pocket.

The funny thing is, they could have been off by days or weeks.

The shopkeeper and the mill foreman, like many people in today’s society, were caught up in a game called “follow the follower.” Instead of conducting their own investigation to find someone who truly has the qualities they wish to emulate, people tend to take on the group mentality. People want to be themselves, but they are afraid to be labeled as “different.” There is nothing inherently wrong with following. In fact, it is one of the most effective ways to learn. High achievers are constantly studying other people and their methods of accomplishment. The difference is that they are particular about the people from whom they choose to learn. They look for those whose values match their own and who have achieved excellence in their field. They surround themselves with models of success.

“When in doubt, make a fool of yourself. There is a microscopically thin line between being brilliantly creative and acting like the most gigantic idiot on earth. So what the hell, leap.” — Cynthia Heimel, writer and humorist
