n the 30-plus years since starting his business, Champion Waste Removal owner Louis Mauriello has watched his longtime customers’ kids grow into adulthood and have children of their own. But that’s not a surprise—his friendly rapport, combined with a professional approach to every project he takes on, is proof that his company continues to thrive well into the 21st century. Mauriello began family-owned-and-operated Champion Waste Removal in the 1980s as a conventional garbage disposal company, but in the ensuing decades, he’s reinvented his business. “We specialize in residential and commercial cleanouts, not only on homes and businesses, but on construction sites as well—but bulk projects are certainly welcome,” he explains. Providing Shelter From Life’s Storms

hen life temporarily takes a turn for the worse, Montclair residents have a safe place to go to pick up the pieces. Since March 1989 The Salvation Army of Montclair has provided clean, safe transitional housing through Cornerstone House. But Cornerstone House is far from being a typical homeless shelter. In fact, it’s the only homeless shelter of its kind in Suburban Essex County. “We help the people who fall through the cracks,” says Corps Officer Larry Ashcraft, operating officer of the Salvation Army Montclair Citadel. “Cornerstone House is a shelter for men, women and intact families. But we don’t take people right off the street.” Ashcraft explains that Cornerstone services people who have some type of income from a disability or have a low-paying job. “They’re the working poor who have been priced out of existing rental facilities or had some type of crisis that drained their finances,” he says. Cornerstone House also differs from other shelters in that it helps people prepare for independent living. Every week, Ashcraft says, the residents meet with a case worker who is actively engaged in helping them find better employment, more permanent housing, or resources that will qualify them for state benefits that they may not have known about.” Cornerstone House also provides residents with newspapers, phones and other tools to help empower them to achieve their goals of being independent again, and it also keeps a log of the resident’s progress. And there have been many success stories. For example, Ashcraft relays the story of a single mother and her two children who

were evicted from their apartment. The mother was laid off from her job, and her unemployment benefits were not enough to pay the rent on a monthly basis. Cornerstone House provided temporary housing for the family and counseled the mother. It also contacted some of the organization’s resources, and helped the woman find not one, but two, jobs so she could regain her independence and provide a home for her family. Cornerstone House has 23 beds, and while the residents share kitchen, dining, and recreational areas, the dormitory-style family bedrooms sleep no more than 4 people to a room and have private bathrooms. Ashcraft says the average occupant stays at Cornerstone House for 90 days. “Rarely do we have an opening, When someone leaves, we fill the bed within a day, sometimes in just a few hours,” he says. Cornerstone House receives financial assistance from Essex County and additional funding from United Way of Northern New Jersey. However, Ashcraft says the shelter is always in need of monetary donations and also such items as new, unopened towels and twin sheets and comforters. There are also plenty of volunteer opportunities, including training residents how to operate computers. “Last year we rendered 8,000 nights of shelter to residents,” says Ashcraft. And the shelter continues to be a source of emergency and transitional housing to those in need and a starting place for second chances. Gastroesophageal reflux disease—or GeRD—occurs when the valve that connects the esophagus to the stomach weakens, allowing food and acid or bile to back up into the esophagus. This backwash can irritate the lining of the esophagus and cause associated symptoms such as heartburn. Obesity, asthma, diabetes and pregnancy are among the health factors that can contribute to GeRD’s onset. The majority of GeRD cases are remedied with lifestyle changes and overthe-counter (OtC) medications. experts recommend maintaining a healthy weight and wearing loose clothing around your waist, both of which reduce pressure on your stomach. If possible, raise the head of your bed by about six inches to keep stomach contents from traveling backward; you can try either placing blocks under the bed feet or purchasing a specially made wedge from a medical supply store and inserting it between box spring and mattress. and if you smoke, quit, as a nicotine habit can adversely affect the function of the lower sphincter muscle of the esophagus. OtC meds for GeRD typically include antacids like Maalox and tums that quickly neutralize stomach acid; H2-receptor blockers such as Pepcid aC and Zantac that reduce the production of stomach acid; and proton pump inhibitors like Prilosec and Prevacid that block

GERD stomach acid production. Very often, these medications are taken in conjunction with one another. If you still don’t find relief after taking them for a few weeks, your doctor can prescribe stronger H-2-receptor blockers and proton pump inhibitors, as well as prokinetic agents that strengthen the valve between the esophagus and stomach. Complementary therapies also may help alleviate GeRD. Herbal remedies such as licorice and chamomile, along with relaxation techniques and acupuncture, are used to reduce symptoms in some cases.

What, How and When to Eat • The key to controlling GeRD is identifying what foods cause your symptoms and then altering your diet accordingly. Start by documenting everything you eat, including the time of day, the details of your eating experience, and any symptoms you have afterward. • Generally, to combat GeRD you should avoid not only your personal trigger foods, but also foods that are spicy, fried, high in fat (especially trans fat) and very hot temperature-wise. Caffeine, garlic, onion, mint, chocolate, alcohol and tomato sauce are some of the most common trigger foods. What experts advise adding to your diet are papaya and pineapple, which contain enzymes that help break down proteins during digestion; omega-3 fatty acids, which assist in boosting immunity and can be taken as supplements or found in foods like salmon; and iodized salt, which aids in maintaining proper levels of iodine and sodium (low levels often are linked with reflux). How and when you eat are just as important to managing GeRD. eat smaller meals, slowly and in an upright position. after eating, don’t lie down or go to bed for at least a few hours. and drink a lot of water. as always, speak with your physician before taking any medications or trying complementary therapies to ensure they are safe for you to do so. I couldn’t keep wallowing in self-pity; I had to do something for myself. So I got psychiatric help. “Second, I filled my mind with positive things to change my thought process. I became a tape junky and it worked. I listened to Earl Nightingale and other positive and inspirational programs all the time, everywhere I went. After a while, these affirmations began to lift my spirits, and I started thinking more positively. “The third thing that really gave me hope was when I was invited to speak to a Rotary Club in Kansas City by a former Chiefs player. I really didn’t want to go. I was still depressed. But my buddy insisted. After the speech a man approached me and said he was the president of a national speaker’s bureau. He said, ‘You have a great story and you tell it well. Corporate America will pay you to do this because so many people are facing challenges in today’s world.’ I went home and told my wife, ‘I don’t know what all this is about, why I went through all this crap. But today a man told me I could have a big impact on a lot of people.’” These days, Hearn travels all over the country speaking to corpora-

Q: Is acupuncture painful? A: Pretty much everyone who comes in is anxious and will say, “You are putting needles in me.” The needles are actually only the thickness of a hair. They stay on the surface and it’s almost painless. You might feel a little prick, but it’s less disturbing than a mosquito bite. Most people fall asleep or get deeply relaxed.

bustling, energetic and fun vibe grabs you like a smile as soon as you walk through the doors of Pudsters, West Caldwell’s newest eatery. Open since July 1st, Pudsters is already attracting flocks of locals who have heard about this family restaurant’s terrific eats, all served in an intriguing venue that mixes 21st century technology with yesteryear’s nostalgia. The brainchild of Michael Sobon and whimsically named after his English bulldog, Puddy, much of Pudsters’ interior hearkens back to an earlier, simpler era of family dining, when hamburgers, frankfurters and fries ruled. Today, explains Sobon’s partner and friend Patrick O’Brien, Pudsters elevates these simple offerings from the past by using specially blended proprietary Black Angus beef, ground by butcher Pat LaFrieda, in their remarkably moist hamburgers, searing them to seal in the juices. Sitting next to us, a woman leaned over and raved, “I’m a hamburger connoisseur, and this is a pretty darn good burger.” Single Burgers here are $4.89, doubles and the cheese-added Puddy melt, $6.19. Every month features a burger special: October’s will be the “Huggy Burger,” a BBQ burger with white cheddar, crispy bacon, quality house-made crispy frizzled onion straws and Sweet Baby Ray’s brand BBQ sauce, served on a grilled Martin’s potato roll. Frankfurters are a Polish-style mix of pork and beef, crafted for Pudsters by a small New England firm and served on a grilled New England style roll. “I was a total cynic when it came to frankfurters,” said my guest, “but these are really outstanding.” Be creative and spice up your frankfurter with a generous assortment of free toppings. Frankfurters are $2.29, “loaded” Pudsters, $3.39, Romeos with bacon and “the works,” $4.89. For the vegetarians, the $6.95 portabella mushroom burger rules. Fries and onion rings are welcome sides, particularly the delicious $4.69 white truffle parmesan fries.

Accordingly, the average sales price, $570,200, was up 8% from July. However, the median sales price dropped slightly, from $475,000 to $472,500. The median days on market of sold properties was 31, up from 28 in July. 145 homes sold in their first month on the market, down 9% from 159 in July but up 36% compared with 107 in August, 2012.

Materials being collected at the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day include pesticides and herbicides, automotive fluids (antifreeze, motor oil, steering fluids, etc.), gasoline and kerosene, paint thinners and solvents, household cleaning fluids, oil based paints and stains, darkroom and photographic chemicals, car batteries, chemistry sets, driveway sealer, home fire extinguishers, barbecue type propane tanks, aerosol spray paints, pool chemicals, fluorescent light bulbs and ballasts, 9V, Nicad and rechargeable batteries, and mercury and products containing mercury.

Items being accepted at the Computer and Electronics Recycling Day are computers, monitors, printers, fax machines, scanners, telecom equipment, speakers, televisions, keyboards, main frames, VCRs, stereos, DVD players, toasters, irons and cellular telephones.

We will not be accepting latex paint, unlabeled or unidentiﬁed materials, asbestos, regulated medical waste or infectious waste, commercial or industrial waste, empty containers, explosives, munitions, ordnance or reactive materials, smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms, and household batteries (AA, AAA, C, D).
