A Renaissance at Trinity Academy

iazza Della Sole is celebrating its 10th year anniversary since opening the Upper Montclair retail store in 2004. Owner, Camille L. Kessler’s concept for fashionable comfortable shoes for all walks of life is simple—“where fashion and comfort meet.” She wanted to not only to provide customers with shoes that look good, but shoes that feel good as well—which is why she makes it a point to research brands that sell shoes that are both attractive and comfortable.

nce the playgrounds for the monied elite, country clubs were stiff and snooty. Jackets were required, people spoke with hushed voices, and golf was exclusively a rich man’s game. Children were to be seen but not heard.

How times have changed. Cedar Hill Country Club, located in Livingston, offers a relaxed dress code, casual dining and a family focus. A refreshingly friendly attitude along with a new variety of membership opportunities that reflect today’s lifestyles—it’s one of the most desired private clubs in the area. Club president Dr. Louis Perl feels that Cedar Hill’s lowkey, family friendly atmosphere is responsible for its success

A Private Resort Close to Home GOLF: An 18-hole championship golf course that measures 6447 yards from the back tees down to 5452 yards at the forward tees, making this golf course very playable at any level and challenging for low-handicap golfers. The course is walk-able (carts are also available) and picturesque, with water features that come into play on 4 holes. Members can choose to play 9 or 18 holes, with or without a caddie.

TENNIS: Cedar Hill has three fast dry, green clay Har-Tru tennis courts; a fourth is being added this winter. A full tennis program, with a variety of men’s and women’s tournaments, is offered from early spring through late fall. A tennis pro is available to offer clinics and private lessons to both adults and children.

The Club also added a state of the art Practice Facility with a 15,000 sq. ft. grass tee driving range, chipping area and practice bunkers and a 6,000 sq. ft. putting green.

SWIMMING POOL: An Olympic-sized pool with a slide, as well as a wading pool for the youngest members; both are heated. The pool area includes locker rooms, a lounge area and a snack bar. Towels, sunscreen and bottled water are provided for all members and their guests.

There are three golf pros on staff to offer lessons and clinics for both adults and children.

Martini nights, to regular Pub Nights featuring steaks and seafood, Cedar Hill members are exceedingly well fed. They often choose to enjoy dinner and drinks on an expansive patio overlooking the 18th green with its spectacular sunsets. Not content to rest on its laurels, Cedar Hill is undergoing a number of improvements this off-season, including a renovation of the men’s locker room and an upgrade of both the banquet room and the bar. Named “The 19th Hole,” the latter will feature a new fireplace and expanded bar, making it a perfect spot to relax with friends and even hear live music on a Friday night.

In addition to its family emphasis, Cedar Hill believes in giving back to the community. Every year the club hosts a Charity Day, where its members raise funds for a variety of organizations; 2014 beneficiaries included United Jewish Appeal, Josephine’s Place, and Autism Speaks. Cedar Hill women also participate each August in “Play for Pink,” a breast cancer awareness fundraiser. Whether single, a young family, empty nesters or retirees, Cedar Hill members all have one thing in common… they have all joined the club for a respite from the everyday. Julio Angel Hair Studio Opens in Verona to Accommodate Their Ever Growing Business

his October marks four years since the Julio Angel Hair Studio opened in New Jersey at its first location. Recently Julio Angel Hair Studio moved to 146 Bloomfield Avenue in Verona to accommodate its rapidly growing clientele. “We are used to having one to two new clients a month and now we are approaching 75 new clients this month at the new location,” says Julio Angel, of his quickly expanding business. The new 1,500 square-foot space in Verona is more than two times as large as the previous space in Little Falls. Angel worked in New York City for seven years at a salon on Madison Avenue, which he refers to as “being in a pressure cooker,” because there was so much to learn - and it had to be learned quickly to keep up with the pace of his clients. After seven years of work and training, Angel decided to take his love for hair to New Jersey, where he could offer his clients New York City skills at a fraction of the price. Today, Angel has clients all around the country, as well as internationally, who appreciate not only his talent, but the atmosphere of the Julio Angel Hair Studio experience. Upon entering the studio each client is greeted by friendly staff and offered a beverage before having a consultation with his or her stylist. The focus is wholeheartedly on the service that customers receive. Trained by Angel from the very beginning, stylists have started as assistants and worked their way up, creating a “sense of family” among staff. Angel refers to his studio as a “hair spa” because it is a place that has a quiet and relaxing vibe, unlike many other salons. Stylists and clients both feel comfortable and relaxed during their

osteoporosis [os-tee-oh-puh-roh-sis] a disorder in which the bones become increasingly porous, brittle, and subject to fracture, owing to loss of calcium and other mineral components, sometimes resulting in pain, decreased height, and skeletal deformities: common in older persons, primarily postmenopausal women, but also associated with long-term steroid therapy and certain endocrine disorders. 52

he statistics are staggering for osteoporosis, a chronic condition characterized by low bone density and deficits in calcium and other minerals that render bones brittle and highly breakable. Just this past June, the National Osteoporosis Foundation released updated data on the numbers of Americans both at risk for and affected by the disease: 10.2 million adults age 50 and older have osteoporosis, while another 43 million have a good chance of developing it.

With osteoporosis the culprit behind some two million broken bones annually—breaks that frequently lead to ongoing pain, immobility and a variety of related health problems, not to mention exponential treatment costs—the need for better prevention has never been greater. For everybody, particularly the one in two women and the one in four men who will suffer a fracture from osteoporosis, research as of late offers sage advice for averting and living with the illness today, while holding promise for a “bone healthy” tomorrow.

The News on Diet & Exercise

fat-free yogurt, milk and cheese; fatty fish like salmon and sardines; dark leafy green vegetables such as broccoli, kale and okra; and even foods fortified with Vitamin D and calcium like soy milk and cereal. But moving forward, include in your diet foods rich in magnesium (raisins, spinach and sweet potatoes), high in potassium (bananas, oranges and tomatoes), and filled with Vitamin C (brussel sprouts, green and red peppers and strawberries). The research shows they’ll not only help to increase bone density, but reduce fracture risk as well.

Don’t smoke, avoid or limit alcohol, exercise regularly, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, and increase intake of calcium and Vitamin D—all part of the basic protocol for keeping your bones strong and warding off osteoporosis. But one recent investigation reveals that diet and lifestyle changes prescribed to protect the heart can make better bones as well for a two-for-one “health punch.” The study developed an adherence score for following the American Heart Association’s (AHA) 2006 Diet and Lifestyle recommendations, and then tracked 933 participants, aged 47 to 79. Findings showed that the risk for osteoporosis in bone areas throughout the body dropped from between 9% and 17% when adherence scores increased incrementally.

And when it comes to exercise, frequent physical activity that promotes a tip-top ticker is just as valuable for boosting bone strength. According to the AHA, 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise improves your overall cardiovascular health. These same minutes, whether spent walking, running, hiking, dancing or doing other weight-bearing movements, also have a positive affect on your bones—especially in your thighs and upper body, which are prone to breaks. Be sure to consult with your physician, however, before starting any exercise regimen.

So whereas calcium and Vitamin D always have been important for healthy bones, many other foods and nutrients, once advised primarily for a healthy heart, are now being heralded for their bone-strengthening properties. You should still eat the staples: dairy products such as low-fat or

Obstacle: Every time I organize I have a “look what I found moment” that derails the process. Solution: Distractions from unpleasant tasks are easy to come by. Instead of stopping the project at hand, hold that item you have uncovered until the end. It then becomes a reward for all that good organizing work. A great way to battle procrastination is to put a reward at the task’s completion.

Obstacle: How do I keep the momentum going? Solution: Doing something everyday will not only encourage steady progress, but also instill a familiarity with your items and what needs to be done. When you have frequent touch with the project, you begin to gain the confidence and control you need to accomplish your task.

Boone Studio Enriches Montclair Fitness Scene by Keeping It Fresh & Finding Balance

estled among the hip stores and restaurants of Montclair’s Church Street, Boone Studios offers a sunny and intimate setting with two handsomely renovated workout studios equipped for a wide variety of exercise regimens. Classes include traditional Pilates, Yoga, Barre and TRX, (a regimen created by Navy Seals using suspension ropes and body resistance). Perhaps more unusual is the additional array of fusion sessions including Barre-Yoga, Pilates and Barre, Cardiobarre, Kettlebells and Tabata, (a high intensity interval training discipline mixeat an adjustable height barred with lifting of kettle shaped weights), Kettlebells and Foam Rolling. All the Barre classes involve ballet moves with core conditioning—a highly effective way to shed bulk, lengthen muscles and sculpt bodies. Class size is limited to 8 in one studio and 16 in the other, meaning clients receive individualized instruction, allowing for a range of abilities in one class. The owner, operator, guru and inspirational force behind Boone is Hala Ghanem. Her youthful demeanor and petite physique topped by chocolate and caramel ringlets belie her years of training. “I first started teaching Yoga in 2003, owning a similar studio in Beirut. When I came to the U.S. I became certified through Yoga Works, and

then took 12 different certifications—4 in Barre alone. My certification spans Pilates, Barre, TRX and Kettlebells. When asked how she finds teachers, Ghanem explains that she has to invest in “training and qualifying promising talents who have already worked in the fitness industry. I like to work with teachers who have multiple certifications, (preferably yoga or pilates), as they tend to understand body mechanics and alignment well.” Ghanem began teaching BarreYoga “as a method to achieve greater flexibility and alignment. The multi-discipline sessions we offer are very well blended as they combine flexibility and strength equally. Cardio is the newer addition to the mix because of its benefit for fat burning and cardiovascular health. People are generally time-crunched so it’s nice to be able to get everything you need in one class. Multiple disciplines keep workouts fresh and effective.” People who only have one routine tend to become bored and often plateau physically. Perhaps the most important benefit of more than one discipline is that tightened and stressed muscles receive a much-needed release. As Ghanem points out, “There is so much to be said about doing a deep yoga stretch after a kettlebell class. However, we ensure that strength will be enhanced and sculpting ac-

complished by taking our pure, single discipline classes as well as the fusion. All of our sessions are results oriented”. While Boone is providing a way to keep working out fresh, challenging and restorative, Ghanem has thought of small but important amenities as well. Her studios have babysitting for harried young mothers, showers for those heading to work and her husbands’ lattes, crepes and gelato right across the street at “Yalo and Me,” for those who need to refuel. She even encourages signup for classes via text. Looking ahead Ghanem expects to focus on training teachers while allowing demand to dictate the direction of new classes. “Currently there is a shortage of Barre teachers and we are introducing Barre teacher training in January.” They are also planning to add 8am and 5:30pm classes in February. Cooking with… CHEF LOU SEGER By Rhonda Rivera, photos by Dan Epstein

fter speaking with Chef Lou Seger of LuNello in Cedar Grove for just a few minutes, his love of food becomes clear. His passion for every ingredient shines, whether discussing how to choose a good butternut squash (go for a medium size with small bulb because it has less seeds), the fine point of tearing fresh herbs versus cutting them (to prevent bitterness), or the taste of Stracchino cheese (made from Italian cow’s milk, creamier than brie). “The Stuffed Pumpkin recipe is one of our customers’ favorites,” Chef Lou reveals. The whole idea behind the recipe started with his desire to use pumpkin as more than just a soup bowl. When a local farmer introduced him to types of squash that are entirely edible, including the skin, Chef Lou’s creative juices began to flow. At first, he started with a pumpkin fondue with rabbit sausage and croutons. However, Chef Lou wanted a more rustic and autumnal dish. His customers gave him feedback, which led him to substitute pork sausage for the rabbit. After several iterations, his recipe evolved into the star it is today. Since creating the recipe over ten years ago, his demand for pumpkins and squash has grown exponentially. Luckily, he has his own farm in Hackettstown where he grows the fresh pumpkins he uses. For those he does not grow, he has sources in the Catskills and other nearby areas. Chef Lou hopes you enjoy his delectable fall recipe, which he graciously created just for Suburban Essex home cooks, and is very proud that it uses just one pot while capturing the essence of his restaurant dish.

Stuffed Pumpkin Ingredients: 5 Delicata squash 1 lb. Butternut squash 2-3 T olive oil, plus additional to roast the squash ¼ to ½ lb. sausage (can use pork, turkey, chicken) 1 onion, minced 1 garlic clove, finely minced ¼ lb. sliced shiitake mushrooms, optional (can substitute your favorite) ¼ lb. sliced cabbage, optional 6 fresh sage leaves, torn ½ t fresh thyme, torn ½ c chicken broth ¼ lb. Pecorino Romano cheese, grated, plus additional for the topping ½ lb. Stracchino cheese Salt and pepper to taste For garnish: Pumpkin seeds, roasted in the oven and then sautéed in butter Pomegranate seeds Truffle or pumpkin oil Directions: Cut the Butternut squash in half and scoop out the seeds. Place together with the Delicata squash on a baking sheet, drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Roast in a 400F oven for 35 minutes. Let cool. Then, remove the squash flesh and put into a bowl, careful to cut the Delicate in half for use as serving bowls later. Heat 2-3T oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Add the sausage and brown for 5 minutes. Put in the onion, and brown for 3 more minutes. Add the garlic and cook for another minute. Stir in the mushrooms and/or cabbage (if desired), sage and thyme. Add the squash and mash with the back of a spoon. Pour in the chicken broth and stir, making sure to scrape up the brown bits from the bottom. When the mixture is a fondue consistency, turn down the heat and add in the Pecorino and Stracchino cheeses. Turn off the heat.

BONUS TIP: Use any leftover butternut squash to make a delicious filling for ravioli. Simply mix 1 cup pureed butternut squash, 2T ricotta, 2 leaves fresh sage (torn), 2 T grated pecorino or parmesan cheese, a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg, and salt and pepper to taste. Place this mixture into ravioli squares or wonton wrappers, form ravioli and cook.

Place the Delicata shells into an oven-proof dish. Stuff them with the filling. [NOTE: you can do all the preceding in advance.] Sprinkle some Pecorino Romano cheese on top and put under the broiler for about 5 minutes, until browned. Garnish with pumpkin seeds, pomegranate seeds and either the truffle or pumpkin oil. Serves 10 October 2014

he transition into the fall season brings with it the desire for many homeowners to make corresponding changes to the fabrics and furnishings of their most valued living spaces. Interior design trends have changed substantially throughout the decades to match the continuous transformations in fashion, music and society in general.

According to Pat Schlossberg, an interior designer at Hampton House Furniture in Montclair, “interior design transforms with the seasons much like fashion trends.” People want their homes to match standards that are akin with style, comfort and practicality. In the fall, homeowners are more apt to purchase leather furniture. The desire for warmth and comfort from furniture becomes more important as the weather gets cooler, and leather is one of the materials to which homeowners turn for comfort. Valerie Ruddy of Decorating Den Interiors in Verona, states that, “furniture is not as big and bulky anymore. Clients are gravitating toward a more retro look.” Silver metallic finishes are waning as the return to gold finishes begins to resurge and become the popular choice to accent with other colors.

A big trend now seems to be making a bold statement in the room through the use of a focal wall with fun patterns or the arrangement of bright accessories,” she says of the trend.

The Power of PERSISTENCE Things are rarely accomplished in one great burst of energy; success comes when we continue to work day after day, tirelessly putting in the effort even if it takes far longer than we’d ever imagined. Barry Farber

ersistence pays off. Those who steadily pursue a course of action despite any obstacles along the way have a far greater chance of success than those who get fired up—and then quickly burn out and lose interest and energy.

“Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence.” –Calvin Coolidge In fact, persistence is one of the most powerful traits shared by successful people. Successful people do not give up. They’ll try over and over again and do whatever it takes to achieve their goals. When they meet rejection, they use it to motivate them even more to move forward, coming up with new ideas and approaches. When they meet obstacles, they find ways around them. When

they get tired, they find a way to rejuvenate. Successful people don’t quit; if they stumble, they always start again. There are two parts to persistence; the first is having a goal—and the second is moving toward it. Once a goal is etched in your heart, you dream about it, believe in it, live it… and you’ll do anything to reach it. But sometimes, persistence alone is not enough. For example, say you’re trying to reach someone who is never available by phone and doesn’t return your messages. You could give up and call someone else or you could keep calling. Perhaps you’ll wear the person down until he says in exasperation, “This guy is still calling? Fine, let me take the call.” However, a more effective way to get through to this person is by offering value with your persistence. To accomplish that, you first have to do your homework. Discover what this person’s goals are. Learn what is important to him. Then figure out exactly how you can help him achieve those goals.

Well prepared, you can place that call— and articulate clearly what you can bring to the table for him. He will soon be on your side—because he sees that you are on his. And the next time you try to reach him, most likely he will quickly take your call. As we can see in this example, it’s not just increasing the quantity of your actions that counts; it’s also making every action more efficient and effective. Finally, persistence means constant improvement. If you keep doing the same thing over and over again, in just the same way, you’ll always get the same results. Instead, learn from every step you take—and find shortcuts or make other changes as needed. Then, as you continue your efforts, you’ll increase your efficiency and every action will become more meaningful than the one before. Develop these traits of persistence, and in time you will find success. Step by step, you may even achieve greatness.

Materials being collected at the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day include pesticides and herbicides, automotive fluids (antifreeze, motor oil, steering fluids, etc.), gasoline and kerosene, paint thinners and solvents, household cleaning fluids, oil based paints and stains, darkroom and photographic chemicals, car batteries, chemistry sets, driveway sealer, home fire extinguishers, barbecue type propane tanks, aerosol spray paints, pool chemicals, fluorescent light bulbs and ballasts, Nicad and lithium batteries, and mercury and products containing mercury.

Items being accepted at the Computer and Electronics Recycling Day are computers, monitors, printers, fax machines, scanners, telecom equipment, speakers, televisions, keyboards, main frames, VCRs, stereos, DVD players, toasters, irons and cellular telephones.

We will not be accepting latex paint, unlabeled or unidentified materials, asbestos, regulated medical waste or infectious waste, commercial or industrial waste, empty containers, explosives, munitions, ordnance or reactive materials, smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms, and household batteries (AA, AAA, C, D & 9V).
