In 1996, JSDD was established as an independent agency. Since then, an additional ten supervised, supportive living sites have been added. In 2004, JSDD opened the doors of the Wae (Wellness, Arts &Enrichment) Center, an alternative learning program which provides opportunities for people with developmental and acquired disabilities to develop skills and cultivate self-esteem while tapping unknown talents and creating new possibilities for artistic pursuits, wellness endeavors and enrichment activities. The event will be held at the Morris Museum in Morristown on Sunday, November 6 from 6:30–9:30pm. Individuals can register by visiting: www.jsddmetrowest.org/20thanniversary-concert.

ood Grief, a bereavement support organization, will host its sixth annual Great Pumpkin Ball, titled “Forks, Corks, and Cocktails,” at 7pm, Friday, Oct. 21, at Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit.

The organization provides unlimited support to children and families following the death of a mother, father or sibling. These programs are free thanks to the help of friends and events like the annual gala, which raises money to further the organization’s mission. This year’s Great Pumpkin Ball will be a fun and festive evening of culinary and cocktail pairings, where guests can wine and dine the night away. The event features music, a silent auction, and guest appearances by Good Grief kids, all in support of the organization. uality workmanship and superb customer service is the mission of T-Mont Plumbing & Heating. Established 26 years ago by owners and partners Daniel Knapik and Vincent Corbo, T-Mont’s staff includes five additional plumbers and two secretaries who provide fast, efficient, and reliable services to its clients. The company is the winner of the Best of Nutley Plumbing Award for three consecutive years. T-Mont services both residential and business customers within Essex County and surrounding communities. On the residential side, basic plumbing and heating services are available, as well as the installation and maintenance of boilers and water heaters. Oil to gas heating conversions is another popular request. Sewage and water main problems are also corrected. Commercially, T-Mont has worked with area apartment and building management companies since its inception. They also accept new plumbing

and heating contracts for constructions and renovations of buildings. T-Mont maintains normal business hours Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Twenty-four hour emergency service is available when unexpected repairs are needed before or after regular business times.

“All in all we strive to create a wise consumer.” Taking care of its customers is paramount to T-Mont Plumbing. States Corbo, “We try to go above and beyond the normal service call. Not only do we fix any plumbing and heating issues, but we also try to help our customers. We give clients recommendations to maintain their equipment by educating them on preventative measures. We may also

suggest alternative measures, which can save them some money. All in all we strive to create a wise consumewr.” Loyalty and commitment on the part of the employees, as well as the customers, is the result of this excellent service. Knapik and Corbo lead by example. They are partners and close friends. Most of the employees are long-term workers. Corbo states, “T-Mont employees are like family.” The company also forges strong relationships with its clients. Repeat requests for the same plumbers by clients are common. “Many of our plumbers have a following. It’s all about making the customers happy,” concludes Corbo. “Price, quality, workmanship, and, of course, their favorite plumbers.”

Easy Ways to Weatherize Your Home

E

xtreme temperatures—hot or cold—can send your energy bills through the roof while also creating an uncomfortable living space for your family.

Almost two-thirds of American adults live in a home that needs weatherization, according to a recent online survey, commissioned by Duck brand, conducted by Harris Poll. To bring down energy costs and make the temperature in your home more comfortable, consider defending your home with helpful tools like Roll-On Window Kits, Double Draft Seals, Socket Sealers and Attic Stairway Covers. You can also adjust ceiling fans, install a programmable thermostat and open or close curtains to leverage sunlight and shade. To learn more about weatherization products and ways you can make your home more comfortable and efficient, visit duckbrand.com/weatherization. Don’t resign yourself to high energy bills and an uncomfortable living space. Weatherizing is simple, affordable and effective. — StatePoint

Renovating? Consider a Fireplace

W

hen considering home renovations, it’s important to be choosy, as some projects can end up costing you a pretty penny with little return on investment.

More information about how a fireplace can improve home value and differentiate spaces is available at www.heatnglo.com.

For those looking to renovate, a fireplace presents an attractive choice—whether a sale is in the cards or you simply want to enhance appeal and comfort. —StatePoint

See page 62 for Best of Essex Resource Directory

Some fast facts can provide answers to this age old consideration. Here are three compelling reasons to think fireplace. • A gas fireplace will add between $2,950 to $5,900 to a home’s value, according to the “Marshall & Swift Residential Cost Handbook.” • New homebuyers rank fireplaces as the number one most desired decorative appearance product in a new home, according to the National Association of Home Builders. • Today, homeowners have an opportunity to differentiate their homes with a fireplace in different ways. Both traditional and modern fireplaces are now offered with innovative technologies that push the boundaries of where fire can go and how it can look. Consider brands that designers, architects, builders, and remodelers trust, such as Heat & Glo, which leads the industry in design and innovative technology. October 2016

Why Sleep Apnea Is Bad for Your Health

S

leep apnea is not only a leading cause of disrupted sleep and daytime sleepiness, but this disease is also a contributing factor to a host of medical problems. According to the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM), approximately 25 million adults in the United States suffer from obstructive sleep apnea. This breathing disorder causes you to snore loudly and stop breathing up to hundreds of times a night for anywhere from 10 seconds to more than a minute. Despite the prevalence of sleep apnea, many don’t realize they have it. Others are unable to tolerate a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine and mask, which is the most common treatment for sleep apnea. However, an effective alternative treatment for sleep apnea is a custom-fit oral appliance provided by a qualified dentist. Treating sleep apnea can lead to better rest and ease your risk

of developing these five serious health complications:

1

High Blood Pressure

In medical studies, oral appliance therapy has been shown to help reduce high blood pressure. This treatment uses a custom-fitted, mouth guard-like device to move the jaw slightly forward and keep the airway open, without the need for a constantly running machine and face mask.

2

Heart Disease

According to a study from the University of Wisconsin, the risk of dying from heart disease may increase by as much as five times among those who have untreated, severe sleep apnea.

3

Depression

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that women suffering from untreated sleep apnea have a five times greater risk for depression symptoms, while men who have untreated

sleep apnea are more than twice as likely to exhibit signs of clinical depression.

4

Diabetes

5

Stroke

Up to 83 percent of Type 2 diabetes patients have sleep apnea and are not even aware of it, according to research published on “Frontiers in Neurology.” Recent medical research suggests that glucose control weakens as the severity of a patient’s sleep apnea increases. “The American Journal of Medicine” published a recent study that shows that stroke risk rises even if the patient has no other stroke risk factors. Obstructive sleep apnea also is frequently found among those who have already suffered a stroke. —Family Features; Photo courtesy of Getty Images; Source: American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine

A Conservative Approach to Treating Pain Chiropractor Andrea Buccino treats muscle and joint injuries without drugs or surgery By Deborah Schapiro, Photo by Dan Epstein

A

ndrea Buccino, D.C., C.C.S.P. is a certified sports chiropractor who has worked with the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Teams, but her practice is by no means limited to athletes: “I treat both athletes and non-athletes with all types of injuries.” She adds that the injuries tend to be seasonal: “Now that it’s fall, I’m seeing a lot of football, soccer, lacrosse and rugby injuries. Soccer players often complain about knee pain, while football players tend to come in with back or shoulder issues. In the spring I always see home gardeners with shoulder injuries or joggers coming out of hibernation who have hurt their knees or ankles.” And some issues are year-round: “I also see a number of retirees with arthritis of the knee or lower back issues.” Whatever the issue, Dr. Buccino has a number of treatment methods at her disposal. Depending on the diagnosis, she may perform a myofascial release (similar to a deep-tissue massage) to increase blood flow to the injured muscle. Or she may do ultrasound or electric stimulation physiotherapy with heat or ice. Kinesiology taping to help support a joint or muscle is another option.

Dr. Andrea Buccino

“Chiropractors try to get to the root of the problem and correct it.” With any treatment, there will also be what Dr. Buccino calls “homework.” She observes, “I can only work with patients while they are in my office; they always get better faster if they also do their home rehab assignments.” The assignment may be gentle muscle-stretching exercises or icing and elevating a sprained or strained ankle, for example. If necessary, Dr. Buccino will refer a patient out for medical or surgical treatment. She believes strongly in the value of seeing a chiropractor first, though: “Chiropractors try to get to the root of the problem and correct it. This is a more conservative, less invasive approach to treating pain.”

hink amazing Southern comfort food is only available below the Mason-Dixon line? Think again! Tie on a bib for BBQ worthy of Kansas City, Memphis and Charleston—right from West Orange’s own SuzyQue’s BBQ & Bar. Restaurateur Susan Hoff berg, the “Suzy” of SuzyQue’s, does not drown her BBQ in sauce. Instead, tables are set with a variety of homemade sauces to tempt every tastebud. From the sweet Habañero Citrus to a rich, traditional Kansas Citystyle (tomato based) option, smoky Texas-style (molasses based) or a lighter Carolina-style (vinegar based) choice, diners sample how each compliments and heightens the flavors of the meats. However, all of the dishes already are so well seasoned that they can stand alone. Ready for starters? Dive into SuzyQue’s Signature Smoked Wings ($13), dry rubbed and slow-smoked to perfection.

These gems are crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. SuzyQue’s also satisfies a Buffalo wing craving with their one-pound plate ($9), highlighted with just the right amount of kick. Seafood lovers will relish the crunchy beer-battered Fried Catfish Strips ($10), while vegetarians will savor Crispy Mac and Cheese Fritters ($9), filled with gooey Monterey Jack and cheddar cheeses. Clearly, BBQ is the menu standout. Tasty Short Ribs ($29), served naked and on the bone, are a Flintstone’s delight. For those confounded by all the selections, order the BBQ Combo Platter ($29), and enjoy all the goodness: baby back ribs, St. Louis-style ribs, sliced brisket, pulled pork and chicken and grilled Andouille sausage. And what is a BBQ place without sides? SuzyQue’s delivers with outstanding Mac and Cheese ($6), smoky collard greens ($5) and the best darn cornbread ($2) this side of the Mississippi.

Other alternatives include the wonderfully piquant Jambalaya ($18), featuring smoked chicken and chicken Andouille sausage over rice. At the bar, sliders ($6 during Happy Hour) are a must. These bites of heaven, topped with frizzled onions and cheese, rocket off the charts when combined with the Kansas City-style sauce. The atmosphere at SuzyQue’s is spot on for a BBQ joint: wide-plank wood floors, rolls of paper towels for napkins, flat screens set to various games and a welcoming bar. SuzyQue’s has drink/food specials during the week and offers entertainment nightly, from live music to poker and karaoke. During football season, the Sunday raffle has enticing prizes. For details, go to www.SuzyQues.com. Five years ago, Hoff berg traded her 90-hour work week in the corporate world for 100+ hours per week at SuzyQue’s, and could not be happier. “Integrity” has been her guiding principle, allowing her to overcome many challenges. She credits her excellent staff, especially General Manager Michael Capadona, her amazing family and loyal customers for SuzyQue’s successes, and looks forward to serving up many more years of BBQ.

Diamond MINDS

Q

uotes have always intrigued me and how they can make you think in new directions. One of my favorite quotes is “Chop wood, it warms you twice.” Warms you while you’re chopping and warms you when you use the wood in a fire. How do you make the most of every moment of time? It’s the most important and valuable asset we own. I always try to think of how each activity I’m involved with will have synergy or impact on other activities and goals I’m working on. It allows my effort to be multiplied. As an example I have a passion for painting and sculpting. The time I spend on painting is relaxing but it also can be used to tie into projects I’m working on so we created the first in a series of FoldzFlat® Pens with inspirational quotes and artwork:

“When something (an affliction) happens to you, you either let it defeat you, or you defeat it…” -Jean-Jacques Rousseau

Barry Farber

“Things turn out best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out.”

“Everyone has inside of him a piece of good news. The good news is that you don’t know -John Wooden how great you can be! How much you can love! What you can accomplish! “I believe a leaf of grass is no less And what your potential is!” than the journey–work of the stars…” -Anne Frank

“When it is dark enough you can see the stars.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Confidence doesn’t come out of nowhere. It is a result of something… hours and days and weeks and years of constant work and dedication.” -Roger Staubach

“In helping others, we shall help ourselves, for whatever good we give out completes the circle and comes back to us.” -Flora Edwards

-Walt Whitman

“Happiness is a by-product. You cannot pursue it by itself.” -Samuel Levenson

“Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood.” -Marie Curie

“Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.” -Mark Twain

Barry Farber is a radio and television host with expertise in sales and marketing topics, as well as a marketing consultant for corporations, professional athletes, and entertainers. He’s the creator and marketer of the FoldzFlat® Pens that can be seen at www.makemypen.com. Learn more about this author at www.BarryFarber.com
