Century 21 Cedarcrest Realty Celebrates 10th Anniversary

Fourth Generation Funeral Director at Galante Funeral Home

J

ohn Sass, broker/owner of CENTURY 21 Cedarcrest Realty, Inc. in Caldwell is celebrating his agency’s tenth anniversary this month, marking the milestone with pride, a shelf full of regional and national real estate industry awards, and a second office in Little Falls, which opened this spring.

S

hortly after graduating from Fairleigh Dickinson University Jason Galante began his apprenticeship with the family business. Upon completion of all mortuary board requirements he received his Funeral Directors License and joined this father Steven, Uncles and Cousins in the family funeral business.

The agency was founded in 1978; Sass bought it in 2009. The company, which started John Sass with six people in 2009, now has over 80 real estate agents—some of whom are among the region’s highest producers.

The first Galante Funeral home was started by Elvira I. Galante in Jason Galante 1934 in the Ironbound section of Newark. Soon after her start, her three sons Frank, Richard and Joseph joined her in the business opening two more locations in Union and Caldwell.

As he looks towards the future, Sass said that, “I’ve always cultivated a family feeling that values teamwork, which translates into better customer service out in the field. And I care about everyone here as people and as professionals, which permeates throughout the company. We are wellpositioned to continue our forward trajectory as we strive to always deliver—in the words of CENTURY 21 Real Estate— relentless service and commitment, and a superior experience for everyone involved.”

In the 1970’s a third generation, Frank, Victor, Steven and Richard Jr. joined the family tradition of service. In 2008, sons Frank R. Jr., Victor II and Aunt Brenda joined the family as the fourth generation of Galantes committed to continuing our tradition of excellence and caring service. Today Jason and his family continue to appreciate the trust given to them by families in their time of need. They continue to serve families in the fine tradition of service, attention to detail and caring that has been the hallmark of our history.

Giants Player Helps Bag Hunger at Brookdale ShopRite

I

n recognition of September as National Hunger Action Month, ShopRite stores across New Jersey and other states hosted annual ShopRite Partners In Caring “Help Bag Hunger” days. Local dignitaries, community leaders and athletes help raise awareness to fight hunger and food insecurity by bagging groceries at their local ShopRite stores. Evan Engram, New York professional football player and tightend for the Giants, joined Brookdale ShopRite in Bloomfield to bag groceries for customers. “Help Bag Hunger” aims to raise awareness about food insecurity.

Engram and Neil Greenstein, owner and operator of Brookdale ShopRite, bag groceries as part of the store’s Help Bag Hunger event on Tuesday, September 17.

Walking for Fitness Class

Like Montclair native Steve Kelly’s sculptural paintings, the simple title — “brutal” — strikes viewers as confrontational, but upon closer examination it’s meaning is both layered and complex. He incorporates physical objects such as commercial ads, plastic bags, money, and printed reproductions, crumpling then lacquering them to create exquisite sculptural surfaces paired with layers of traditional oil painting and energetic splashes of color. APEX MARBLE & GRANITE

Truly the (Counter) Top! By Deborah Schapiro, photos by Dan Epstein

F

or over 25 years, Apex Marble & Granite has been the Essex County go-to source for bathroom and kitchen countertops. Located in Cedar Grove, Apex has a well-deserved reputation for great selection and customer service. Elena Tsatsaros, co-owner of Apex with her husband Tom, recently spoke with Suburban Essex about what customers should consider when choosing a countertop material.

What is the most important factor a customer should consider when choosing a countertop? When we work with a customer, we always start with the look; marble and granite simply don’t look like each other. Does the customer have a certain style or color scheme in mind? Sometimes a client will bring an inspirational photo to show us.

What else should a customer consider? The second consideration is care. Marble is certainly more sensitive than granite, which might be a dealbreaker in the kitchen. It has a lot of natural beauty, but it needs to be treated more carefully because acidic foods like lemon juice or tomatoes might cause etching.

Does Apex offer any other options besides marble and granite? Definitely. Quartz is a very popular choice for both the kitchen and the bathroom because there are so many brands and designs. It looks like marble but doesn’t have its sensitivity. We also offer quartzite, which is a natural stone like granite and marble. In addition, we carry soapstone, limestone and glass. Granite, marble and quartz are our most-chosen materials, though.

Elena Tsatsaros

Are certain products more costly than others? Actually, all of our products come in such a wide range of colors, styles and grades that we really can’t say that. This means that there is something available for every budget.

Create Ambience with Water Lighting

L

ight is an essential component to create the perfect nighttime landscape. Water and light work beautifully together to produce a striking focal point in any yard. Whether you’re looking to light a pool, fountain, or pond there’s a perfect combination to take your landscape from standard to stunning.

Submerged Color-Changing Lights For high-traffic areas such as pools, consider adding submerged color-changing lights. This makes it easier to adjust the lights to your immediate needs.

Tips for Adding Water Lighting to Your Landscaping Put Some Thought into It–Your lighting features should be placed where it will look good and where it will promote safety. Consider All Angles—Where on your landscape will you be viewing your lighting most? What angle will be the least distracting and offer no glare?

Underwater or Above-Water Lighting

This form of lighting is taking over the pool lighting world. Putting two lights at each end of the pool no longer cuts it. Led and fiber optics is quickly becoming the new standard in pool lighting.

Placing your lighting in or above the water offers very different effects. For ponds, we suggest overlapping both forms of lighting. This gives your water feature a more fulfilling and professional look.

Spotlights

Think About Maintenance

Accent the most beautiful parts of your waterscape with spotlights. This technique works well with features like waterfalls and fountains. Proper light placement catches the mist and ripples off the water for a dancing effect.

While water lighting adds a serene effect to any yard, it also requires maintenance. Because your lighting will be in constant contact with water, the fixtures face more wear. Install quality lighting fixtures that have a warranty. Ask your landscape lighting designer about maintenance plans and repair.

A touch of light can make all the difference in how you enjoy your nighttime hours outdoors. Contact a Lighting Designer to discuss your options and start planning the ideal landscape lighting design for your home!

Years of Knowledge & Experience Handling All Electrical Needs By Susan Baldani, photo by Dan Epstein

F

amily owned and operated, E&M O’Hara Electrical Contractors has been in business since 1963, when brothers Edward and Michael O’Hara established the company. Today, the company is run by Edward’s son, Ed O’Hara, and daughter, Kelly Ann Daly, and they continue to uphold the company’s original slogan of “We specialize in service.” Ed is the president and CEO and has been working at E&M O’Hara for over 20 years. As a licensed electrician, he is hands-on and knowledgeable about every aspect of the business. He also performs estimates and oversees their team of electricians. “What makes us stand out is the level of experience that our electricians have and their ability to handle any issue that arises. They’ve been doing this for a while,” said Ed. Kelly Ann manages the business operations and has been with the company for 16 years. She came on board as soon as her last child started school. “We have many loyal customers due to our prompt, dependable and efficient service,” said Kelly Ann. “Our goal is for our customers to be happy and satisfied with our work.” E&M O’Hara currently has seven electricians who work primarily within Essex County, but will travel out of the area for large jobs. Their Office Manager, Jim, dispatches the crew to residential and commercial establishments, big and small, and will handle whatever a client is in need of—from changing an electrical switch in someone’s home to installing electrical lines for large equipment and businesses. They also handle new installations and maintenance for several well-established banking institutions in North Jersey. The team of E&M O’Hara also provides residential and commercial lighting installations. And, although they carry standard fixtures and materials, many of their customers prefer to choose their own. Ed feels that this is a good idea as well since there are so many options for clients to choose something that fits their style and needs. E&M O’Hara’s mission is to provide the best service at the most competitive prices. “Our father and uncle started the business and since they’ve been gone, we’re continuing to carry on their tradition,” said Ed.

The MIND/BODY Connection By Christine S. Maxwell, photo by Dan Epstein

T

he theory that illness begins in the mind and manifests in the body has led to collaboration by Morgan Reade, L.Ac., M.S., and Dona Baldassarre-Caamano, LCSW. Their work at NJ Advanced Acupuncture in Caldwell helps patients in pain. How did you become interested in the mind/body connection? Dona: Originally, I rented space in Morgan’s office for my private psychotherapy practice. Over time, I noticed that we were treating many of the same patients for anxiety, stress, and depression. Cognitive talk therapy, followed by acupuncture works for many clients. Clients tell me that they feel so much better after combining both talk therapy and acupuncture. I also noticed that Morgan and I were cross-referring patients, suggesting both talk therapy and acupuncture for them. Morgan: When I work with clients, they often want to talk about personal issues that they believe are affecting the pain they feel. Because Dona specializes in

cognitive talk therapy, I refer the clients to her. Similarly, she sends patients with physical pain to me. Our collaboration naturally evolved. How does each therapy work to produce optimal results in healing? Dona: Cognitive talk therapy helps to rewire people’s brains, so instead of ruminating on the present, past, or future issues, people learn to live in the now. When you are mindful of the present, you are more grounded mentally. The brain is a muscle – you are retraining your brain to think differently, to live more positively and fully in the present. Morgan: By placing needles in specific areas of the body, an energy response occurs. The brain sends neurotransmitters, such as endorphins, rushing to the needles, releasing the physical pain caused by emotional issues, such as muscle tightness. This response is like a “runner’s high.” The muscles begin to relax. Pain is gradually diminished through these natural healing processes. October 2019

How do you coordinate your efforts? Dona: Often, excessive worry and daily life stressors that we all have manifest into physical symptoms, such as headaches, muscle tension, stomach aches, and lower resistances, all which may lead to sickness. By receiving both acupuncture and talk therapy, there is a higher chance to reduce stress. Emotions often hide in the body and psychotherapy increases self-awareness to daily stressors and teaches you how to manage them successfully. Acupuncture, along with psychotherapy, releases tension and creates inner balance. Morgan: We frequently can see patients in the same visit. The added convenience is that patients can receive both therapies in approximately 90 minutes. This combined treatment leads to increased wellness in many of our patients.

W

ant an easy way to make your favorite recipes a little bit healthier? Try swapping some of the ingredients for their healthier alternatives. Using spaghetti squash instead of regular pasta can cut 180 calories or more from a meal and 32 grams of carbohydrates. Try almond milk instead of regular cow’s milk and save 100 calories. Or, instead of using sour cream in your Mexican dip, replace it with plain Greek yogurt and save 315 calories. Greek yogurt is also a good alternative to Mayonnaise in dishes such as chicken salad and cuts nearly 640 calories and 77 grams of fat out of the picture. *All calories are estimates and based on 1 cup servings. —Source: Livestrong.com

Exercise What You Eat

H

eaded to the gym later? Did you know that what you eat—and when you eat— can have an impact on your workout and cause stomach cramps and other hindering side effects? Two hours before working out, avoid high-fiber veggies like broccoli, onions and beans, as well as foods that are high in fat, such as burgers and ice cream. This is the time to stick to foods with protein, carbs and healthy fats—a PB&J or grilled chicken, for example. If you’re fueling up an hour before the gym, avoid gas-producing fruits, like apples and melons. Instead, have a small bowl of cereal or a light, easily digested carb/protein-filled snack. For a quick bite 15 minutes prior to a workout, eat a banana or some applesauce and stay away from bagels, granola bars and other foods with large servings of carbohydrates, protein, fat and fiber. –Source: Fitsugar.com

According to WebMD, using a saline solution daily can help thin mucus, decrease postnasal drip, and cleanse your nasal passages of bacteria. Three times a week was often enough once symptoms subside. Try using saline solution with a neti pot, both of which you can find at a local drugstore. Nasal irrigation is generally considered to be safe, but a small percentage of regular users experience mild side effects such as minor nasal irritation. People whose immune system isn't fully functioning should ask their doctor before trying nasal irrigation because they are at greater risk for infections.
