CELEBRATING 5 YEARS OF THE ‘BEST’

T

he Best of Essex contest marks its fifth year this year. Throughout these past five years, we have gotten thousands of nominees, honored hundreds of local businesses, and worked unceasingly to run a contest that truly serves our readers, voters and local businesses. That is why this year, in honor of the contest’s 5th Anniversary, we are proud to present three designations to our winners—Gold, Silver and Bronze awards. Honoring these businesses—some who are new to the contest and some who are old favorites— allows us the opportunity to truly honor and applaud three outstanding businesses in each of our 69 categories.

From restaurants and bars to pet care and home renovations, and everything in between, the 5th Annual Best of Essex Contest is proud to award these businesses with their own individual and merited designation—a true testament to their impact on our community. As with years past, our winners will be uniquely recognized at our annual Best of Essex Awards ceremony—once again giving us a chance to celebrate our local businesses. We congratulate all winners—Gold, Silver and Bronze—for their dedication to their customers, clients and the community. We will continue to recognize outstanding local businesses and look forward to the future of the Best of Essex awards. Here’s to the next five years!

Here in America we love having pets. The United States, in fact, has the highest percentage of households with pets, including more than 78 million dogs and 86 million cats, as estimated by The Humane Society. Sure, pet ownership adds more responsibility to our already busy lives, but it also brings joy and companionship, as well as a surprising number of benefits to both our physical and mental well being—from reducing allergies and anxiety to boosting vim and vigor. Studies have shown that older pet owners visit the doctor 30% less often than their counterparts without pets. and while dogs and cats are the typical pets of choice, even taking care of birds, rabbits, lizards and fish can stimulate good health.

Dander, the skin flakes from an animal’s hair or fur, is a common culprit of allergies. But more and more research reveals that children who grow up with pets, particularly dogs and cats, have a greater chance of dodging sensitivities that can wreak havoc on their bodies and stay with them into adulthood. The thinking is that living with animals desensitizes the immune system to allergens and irritants like dander, and also minimizes stress. less stress in the long run further strengthens immunity, which promotes overall good health.

Diet and exercise always will be vital to good cardiovascular health, but investigations have also linked having a pet with a “tuned ticker.” Stroking a dog or cat, talking to a bird, or watching fish in an aquarium can help lower your blood pressure, an important indicator of heart health. Such acts may also reduce cholesterol and even triglycerides and contribute to longer-term survival among heart attack patients. In one landmark study following 369 survivors of heart attack, researchers found that those who owned dogs and cats were less likely to die of cardiac disease.

Finer Fitness

Pet ownership can keep you moving with built-in exercise on a daily basis. Whether you’re briskly walking a dog around the neighborhood or playfully chasing a cat around the house, such physical activity can help you maintain a healthy weight, which in turn guards against the onset of chronic illnesses like obesity and diabetes. Medical literature has reported that dog owners walk more than non-owners and are one-third more likely to exercise the recommended 150 minutes or more each week.

Good Mood

Playing with pets can lift your spirits and calm you down. Indeed, the positive therapeutic effects of interacting with animals are based on science: your level of serotonin (a neurotransmitter referred to as the “happy hormone”) rises, while your level of cortisol (a chemical known as the “stress hormone”) decreases. less anxiety can lower the risk for developing depression. In some cases, pets have been prescribed by therapists to help patients deal with, and recover from, such debilitating sadness. Caring for a pet can also improve your morale and sense of self-worth.

Great Company

With their unconditional love, pets can be wonderful companions and provide the perfect antidote to isolation and loneliness—especially if you’re grieving the loss of a loved one. They can help you make new acquaintances as well. Dogs, in particular, spark conversations with other people and can offer opportunities for socializing in dog parks. If you decide to get a pet, do some research first to determine what kind of pet (and breed, if applicable) is best for you and your family. Then, enjoy the health benefits of owning a furry, feathery or scaly new friend! s

Pet tHerAPy For children with autism or learning disorders and adults suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, a pet may be the solution for improved quality of life. Animals rely mostly on nonverbal communication, just as autistic children and Alzheimer’s patients often do—so their interaction with a pet can dig beneath the layers of frustration and isolation and enable enhanced connection with the world. Studies have shown that pets can help children with learning disabilities stay alert and attentive, and cause people with Alzheimer’s to have less anxiety and fewer outbursts. DIAMOND MINDS By Barry Farber

RECHARGE YOUR BATTERY… …by Maintaining the Right “F.R.A.M.E.” of Mind

E

nergy comes from two Greek words: energeia, meaning activity, and erg, meaning work. Which means that the amount of energy you have determines your ability to do work. What’s the best way to get your natural energy to work for you? You don’t have to put in a whole lot to make a major difference. All you need to do is change your F.R.A.M.E. of reference in these five areas:

F OOD

Eat a balanced diet in the way that’s best for you. Common sense tells you to include lots of water, fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts and grains. I found another approach in a book about the types of food that fueled the training of martial arts masters —who were legendary for their strength, agility and stamina. Among other requirements, they insisted that their food must not spoil easily, must be tasty,

must be simple to prepare, and must make one feel full even when eaten in small amounts.

R E ST

The National Sleep Foundation estimates that fatigue is to blame for up to 90% of all industrial accidents and costs businesses $18 billion a year in lost productivity. The answer? Short naps—15-20 minutes about eight hours after you wake up. However much sleep you require,

rest helps you restore your energy. (But be careful; too much rest is rust.) So during the day when you feel overwhelmed, which causes loss of focus and clarity, sometimes all it takes is a short break in the action to clear your mind, relax, regroup, and come back with a clear head.

A

IR Oxygen sustains you, regulates your heartbeat, feeds both your brain and your blood. Refresh the oxygen in your brain and blood several times a day. Here is an easy exercise to do. Use the 4-4-4 method: Breathe in through your nostrils for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, breathe out through your mouth for 4 seconds (or longer). It’s

Barry Farber

amazing how this simple exercise can relieve stress and add energy.

surround yourself.

M IND

E XERCISE

Increase your mental energy. Read books that increase your effectiveness. Surround yourself with high-energy people. We are all a product of our environment. It’s amazing how certain people can suck out all our mental and physical energy, and yet we surround ourselves with them every day. One of the greatest statements I’ve heard was by Earl Nightingale many years ago: “You become what you think about.” In the same way, you become like those around you. So be selective of what you read, but also be careful with whom you

Commit to exercising at least 30 minutes a day, two to three days a week. Regular exercise not only increases overall energy levels, it also boosts our feelings of health, wellbeing and selfesteem. Contrary to what many people think, sitting around doing nothing makes you tired. The bottom line is that the more energy you expend, the more energy you expand within yourself. So the next time you feel like you’re not in the right F.R.A.M.E. of mind, think about how you’re doing in these five areas. 

ASK THE EXPERT Photo by Sharon Stern

Dr. Tina Moheb Offering Her Expertise in Patient Care

I

f you haven’t been to the dentist in a while, don’t hold off making that appointment any longer. Studies have shown again and again that your dental health can greatly affect your overall health. “Rather than waiting for existing problems to escalate, resulting in painful and involved procedures, treating problems early allows us to take a much more conservative approach,” says Dr. Tina Moheb, DMD, of Advanced Smiles Dental Care in Verona. Dr. Moheb, a practitioner of family and cosmetic dentistry, treats people of all ages and provides all types of services. She also teaches at her alma mater, the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, and keeps up on the most recent research and news in dentistry through continuing education courses. Here, she offers her expertise in patient care.

Q: What can I expect during my first visit to Advanced Smiles? A: From the first time you call to make an appointment, my staff

and I do everything we can to make your experience memorable and pleasant. We offer easy access to new patient forms on our website, and our staff has extensive knowledge—helping them to answer any questions you may have regarding your dental procedure and insurance. During your first appointment, you will receive a comprehensive and detailed exam, including necessary x-rays. Computerized photos will be taken and reviewed with you so that you can understand the conditions existing in your mouth. Our goal is to make sure you have the best possible patient experience in our office.

Q: I’m very apprehensive about the dentist. What do you tell patients who are hesitant about visiting the dentist? A: The most important thing I like to tell my patients is this: you have every right to be nervous. We recognize that everyone has his or her fears, and we will work as hard as we can to make sure you are as comfortable as possible. As long as you

communicate with your dental practitioner, they can make arrangements to ensure your ease and security. We take special care to explain exactly what to expect during the procedures and ensure your comfort so we can turn your dental experience into a positive one.

Q: What keeps patients coming back to Advanced Smiles? A: It’s because we strive to provide the best dental care possible

to all of our patients. We are a very patient-centered practice; patients are our number one priority. Our office provides the latest technological advances including digital x-rays that cut down radiation levels by 90 percent, and intraoral cameras that zoom in on problem areas of your mouth and display the findings on a TV screen so you can see what needs to be addressed. Additionally, patients can view educational videos, and hands-on models are available to better understand individual treatments that are needed. 
