Caldwell University Celebrates New Status and 75th Anniversary

fter 75 years operating as Caldwell College, the institution became Caldwell University. On July 1, 2014 the university officially rolled out its new name and logo. President Nancy H. Blattner received official notification from the New Jersey secretary of higher education on December. 9, 2013, that the college’s petition to change its official name to Caldwell University had been approved.

ormer NFL players Bart Oates and Lee Saltz presented a $15,000 check from the NY/NJ NFL Alumni Association to Give the Kids Hope Foundation, a 501C3 charitable organization that supports educational and recreational programs for underprivileged children in New Jersey. The donation was made on behalf of the Alumni Association’s charitable initiative, “Caring for Kids” that supports worthy nonprofits that help children; the funds were raised at the organization’s annual golf outing in July. Give the Kids Hope Foundation was founded by Judith Schumacher-Tilton and Stephen Tilton Jr. of the Tilton Automotive Group; the check was presented at Gearhart Chevrolet in Denville, one of the company’s two auto dealerships. “This alliance with the NFL Alumni NY/NJ chapter will help increase the public’s awareness of the great need that exists within our communities and help Give the Kids Hope Foundation bring our work to the next level,” said Schumacher-Tilton. “We are grateful to the players for their support of our mission and of the hundreds of kids who will ultimately benefit.” With her at the presentation were sons Ken Tilton and Stephen Tilton. At the 75th anniversary academic convocation on September 19, Dr. Blattner paid tribute to foundress Mother Joseph Dunn and the Sisters of St. Dominic of Caldwell. Caldwell owes special appreciation to the sisters, she said, “for it was from the fruits of their missionary labors and their love that Caldwell College was born and ﬂourished.”

Among the attendees was Rochelle Hendricks, secretary of higher education for the state of New Jersey, who said she was delighted to share in the “truly momentous and moving occasion.” “This is a place where values matter and preparation for leadership and service to the community, nation, world is as important as career preparation,” said Hendricks. Founded by the Sisters of Saint Dominic, Caldwell University is a private, Catholic coed four-year university with a strong liberal arts core curriculum that enhances critical thinking and analytical reasoning. March of Dimes Receives Award for Programs in Newark

he March of Dimes New Jersey Chapter received the 2014 Audrey Manley Program Leadership Award for their Healthy Babies are Worth the Wait� program in Newark, which is a March of Dimes chapter-led, community program aimed at reducing preterm birth in the African American community. It works in partnership between the March of Dimes, the health department, local clinics and hospitals, and the community and includes clinical and public health interventions, provider/ patient education, and community awareness. The program is at University Hospital, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, and Newark Community Health Centers. Amy Fairclough of Cedar Grove and Laura Fitzpatrick of Verona, accompanied by Ashley Howard from the March of Dimes, accepted the award from Dr. Jennifer Howse, March of Dimes President, on behalf of the New Jersey chapter. They participated together in the April 2014 Essex County March for Babies walk, the premier March of Dimes fundraising event, and their team raised $50,000. The March of Dimes works to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. November is Prematurity Awareness Month, when the March of Dimes raises awareness about prematurity, the number one cause of infant mortality. To create the life-size chairs, professional New Jersey artists brought their concepts and materials to the Wae Center and worked alongside the Center’s artists—adults with developmental disabilities. These chairs are a testimony to the talents that oftentimes lay hidden in people with special needs. eith Ballentine, licensed electrician and owner of KB Electric responds to questions from local homeowners who asked about vintage wiring, old circuit breaker boxes and how to save money on their electric bill.

I have an old house with knob and tube wiring. This is my first experience with this old type of electrical wiring and I wonder if I should be concerned about it. I like to equate knob and tube wiring to a Model T automobile. This means that as long as you care for your wiring as you would an antique Model T car, you will be fine. If you are not able to “baby” your wiring, then you should consider bringing your wiring into the twenty-first century. It is important to know that some insurance companies will no longer insure a home with knob and tube wiring, which can be a problem for new homeowners. Typically, the insurance company will offer the applicant a grace period during which they can have their house rewired. If you want to upgrade your electrical service to meet your increased needs, a good time to install new wiring is when you are either taking on a major renovation or repainting the interior of your home. Rewiring your house can be an expensive proposition. Rewiring expenses depend on the size and complexity of the project but in most cases, it costs between $150 and $250 for each outlet, switch or light. An advantage of upgrading your electrical service is that you can sleep at night knowing that the new wiring in your house will keep you safe from an electrical fire.

I was recently working in my basement when I noticed that my house has a Federal Pacific circuit breaker box. I am not familiar with this brand and I am wondering if I should change it. In addition, how much will it cost if I decide to upgrade the box? During the mid-1900s, many electricians installed Federal Pacific circuit breaker boxes, but the company has since gone out of business. Many insurance companies consider Federal Pacific too great a risk to insure. Every time I run across a Federal Pacific box, I strongly suggest the homeowners replace it with upgraded

amperage. In most cases, the cost to replace a circuit breaker box and keep it at 100 amps ranges from $1000 to $1200. To upgrade a breaker box to 200 amps, which is what most homes require, the cost can run from $2000 to $2500.

Last month’s electric bill was at a new all-time high. I need to reduce my electrical costs but I do not want to change my lifestyle. How can I save money on my electric bill? First, try to reduce your electrical consumption. One tip is to install motion sensors, which turn on lights only when you need them. Motion sensors on the outside of your home come on at night and offer security and convenience. Some homeowners have even put motion sensors inside their homes in hallways, closets and entryways. Homeowners can also install compact florescent bulbs, which work well for fixtures that are on for an extended length of time. Second, take advantage of new regulations that allow energy providers to bid for your account. You may wish to choose an established alternative energy company or you may consider looking into a company that analyzes your bill and puts it out for auction. While the conditions and circumstances may vary, more than 65 million Americans—29% of the population, accounting for 31% of U.S. households—are family caregivers. According to one study, family caregivers average 20 hours of care weekly, usually for four or more years. Two-thirds are women between the ages of 40 and 60 years old, caring for a relative, often a parent, who is elderly, frail, disabled and/or chronically ill. With longevity steadily increasing, the caregiver burden is certain to rise and last much longer than it did just a decade or two ago.

ovember is National Caregivers Month, which shines a spotlight on the enormous responsibilities and inherent tolls involved in caring for a loved one. While most family care giving takes place in the home, these duties and stresses can have a substantial impact on the entire family. Family care giving can lead to a lack of privacy for all family members, particularly the primary caregiver. This can also be true in cases where the person being cared for suffers from Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia and is no longer able to respect boundaries. The almost roundthe-clock care also can interfere with normal family routines. Additionally, managing matters like incontinence, falls, wandering and irrational behavior, along with administering medications and helping with daily hygiene, can prove overwhelming.

Fortunately, there are ways to make the process easier on all who are involved. There are also resources to give everyone in the family welcome and necessary time off. To address those privacy issues, for example, try providing your loved one with his/her own space, a television, a bed and a comfortable chair. Install alarms to alert you when the person being cared for attempts to wander outside the home, and put up railings and bars to help prevent falls. You can arrange for a caseworker to visit and recommend other modifications and equipment that could be helpful. You also can inquire about Medicare home health benefits that can cover some of the costs. In general, keep track of all medications to avoid mistakes that can lead to re-hospitalization, make sure medical history is up to date and legal documents are in order, and always speak with your loved one’s phy-

sician about any concerns or questions you may have. Perhaps most importantly, take care of yourself. Family caregivers often put their own wellness “on the back burner” as they see to the needs of others. Care giving is difficult work that can cause you to become physically rundown, mentally exhausted and even ill yourself. Ask for assistance from friends and family, and seek out self-help tools and educational guidance from community agencies. Also, join a support group where you can connect with other caregivers who can truly empathize and share stories and ideas. And if you find yourself slipping into a depression—a common risk for those caring for a loved one with dementia— go see a counselor. Still other options for support include: • Respite care, which enables you to take breaks (from just a few hours

to several weeks or months) to meet other responsibilities or get away for a bit while feeling secure that your relative is receiving the necessary attention. • Adult daycare, which allows your loved one to spend the day supervised at a specially equipped facility. Services may include medication administration and transport to medical appointments. • In-home care, which offers a range of services provided by trained caregivers who can help you with things like hygiene, mobility, light housework and meal preparation, socialization and transportation. • Social workers, who can assist you in accessing a variety of helpful resources.

Digital Dentistry Thrives in a Growing Technical World: Dr. Richard A. Zym Reflects On Then and Now

r. Richard A. Zym remembers the nightmares of the infamous headgear all too well from his teenage years. “I had the whole nine yards,” he laughed at the memory.

Because he was so fascinated with the tooth movement, Dr. Zym’s own family orthodontist spent time with him when he was young to explain exactly how his headgear was supposed to work and the critical importance of daily treatment. It was that experience, along with the support and guidance from his grandfather and parents that sparked his interest in becoming a dentist. In 1991 he received his Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD) degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He then completed a prestigious residency program at Waterbury Hospital, Waterbury CT. This hospital is associated with The Yale University School of Medicine. Over the years dentistry has changed quite a bit due to new technologies and advancements. Dr. Zym began treating patients in Caldwell, NJ in 1993 under the mentorship of Dr. Edward E. Baker, DDS. While working with Dr. Baker for 18 years he learned to treat patients with care and offer only the finest quality dentistry. Dr. Zym has extensive training with dental implants, practicing everything from single tooth restoration with an implant to full mouth rehabilitation with implants. His practice serves ages 3 to 99 and he strives for the highest quality of care. “I love my work and the greatest satisfaction comes from restoring patients’ complete smile and seeing the restored self-esteem and the confidence that comes out of them after having a brand new smile,” he said. Here, Dr. Zym answers some of the most frequently asked questions.

Why is proper tooth care so critical? People with healthy teeth reduce their risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease and also lower their blood pressure. There is a link between dental health, heart health and overall well-being, based on inflammation of the gums. Chronic gum inflammation can lead to buildup of plaque in the walls of the arteries, which can cause cardiovascular disease. My goal is to help people keep their teeth for a lifetime with proper care and education.

Dr. Richard A. Zym What are the most common reasons that patients seek treatment? Patient teeth issues vary with age. For some, they arrive with pain and are scared. It is my job to ease a patient’s fear and help them to feel comfortable during the visit. For people who have older silver fillings when they arrive, I take high definition pictures and if they’re breaking down, the fillings are replaced with white bonded fillings, which chemically bond the teeth and actually strengthens the tooth. Many of my patients seek quality restorative dentistry. They stay with my practice because they receive a beautiful esthetic result that is pain free. I enjoy the transformation of easing a patient’s fear and making them comfortable as much as creating a gorgeous smile!

What other new technology is currently trending? Digital dentistry and implant dentistry have allowed my office to become completely digital and paperless. From the intra-oral camera to digital x-rays and charting, everything is on a server and computerized; it’s all streamlined. High definition pictures of the teeth and complete parts of the mouth can be saved into a digital file with all the patient’s history and work that needs to be done. While it is not yet a mandate to computerize dental records, I wanted the new facility that I built to be up to standard for what the future will bring—and patients love it! Visit the Reinvented, Family-Friendly Verona Inn

he Verona Inn is steeped in Suburban Essex’s local history, having celebrated its 67th anniversary in June. Not content to rest on its laurels, owners John MacEvoy and Brian Mazzi reinvented the restaurant in March 2012, when it relocated to 624 Bloomﬁeld Avenue in Verona. The reinvention process is highlighted by how family-oriented the Verona Inn has become. For example, for every adult entrée purchased, a corresponding number of children at the table eat for free on Mondays. On a recent Tuesday night visit, the restaurant was bustling with diners from toddlers to grandparents enjoying the atmosphere and fare, under the watchful eye of General Manager Garrett Hendry-Bodnar. In addition, the Verona Inn has renewed its dedication to the community. A majority of the restaurant’s very friendly staff hails from Verona. Daily menu specials and events, such

as Football Sundays, Taco & Trivia Tuesdays, and Craft Beer & Burger Wednesdays foster a sense of camaraderie. Moreover, the Verona Inn supports many of the local school programs for lacrosse, football, baseball and music. If you have not had the opportunity to visit the new Verona Inn, you will enjoy the fresh, clean and spacious surrounds. The Verona Inn has a fully stocked bar, booths and tables for diners as well as a more traditional dining room used for private events. A lovely patio in the back, open usually through the end of November, weather permitting, offers outdoor dining. Large ﬂat-screen televisions are scattered throughout, allowing patrons to view various sporting events from nearly every seat, yet still allowing for conversation at the table. But the Verona Inn is not your ordinary sports bar. Its delicious over-sized portions of pub grub keep patrons clamoring for more. Not to be missed are the BaconWrapped Jalapenos starter ($9). They are stuffed with cream cheese and cheddar with a ranch dipping sauce—a bit spicy, but not too hot.

For entrees, burgers are a Verona Inn trademark. Enjoy a delicious Hola Burger ($10), which comes with Jack cheese, beer battered jalapenos, bacon and chipotle ranch dressing on a Hawaiian bun. Verona Inn’s Signature Tacos can be ordered with grilled chicken, steak, Mahi Mahi, beer battered cod and Cajun shrimp; all are equally mouth-watering ($12-$13). Its Lemon-Pepper Salmon is in a delightful white wine sauce that will turn even the salmon-averse into aﬁcionados ($18). No visit to the Verona Inn would be complete without the spuds, served either in fries or tots, of which over eight types are offered ($4-$5). The drink menu is equally impressive. Serving 40+ different beers, new and old favorites are regularly in rotation ($5-9). The full-service bar can quench your thirst for any libation you desire. Happy Hours run daily with special pricing on drinks and appetizers. This neighborhood hangout has great food and a welcoming vibe. Make sure to put the Verona Inn on your list to catch a game, have a drink with your friends and enjoy a great meal. You will be delighted you did.

The Art of Strategic Thinking, Planning & Action The Art of War is a book that was compiled over 2,000 years

ago by a man named Sun Tzu, a mysterious Chinese warrior and philosopher. Asian soldiers and warlords have studied the book for centuries. In recent times, however, The Art of War has also been studied by many of the world’s most successful business leaders and entrepreneurs. This book’s basic tenet is: “To win without fighting is best.” Sun Tzu believed that you could accomplish the most by doing the least. In other words, plan carefully and take care of all the details, so that in the end there is very little left to do. This was Sun Tzu’s advice: “Plan for what is difficult while it is easy, do what is great while it is small. The most difficult things... must be done while they are still easy, the greatest things... while they are still small. For this reason, sages never do what is great, and this is why they achieve greatness.”

Tom Peters, best-selling author of In Search of Excellence, told me that one of his favorite quotes was from General George Patton, who said, “A good plan executed right now is highly preferable to a great plan executed next week.”

The first chapter of The Art of War is devoted to the importance of strategy. A dictionary defines strategy as “a plan, method, or series of maneuvers… for obtaining a specific goal or result.” We all know that not every battle is won by the strongest. A small army with a better strategy can often outmaneuver a larger, better equipped, and even more high-tech army.

“I’m all for planning and and learning and skill development,” says Peters. “On the other side… when opportunity knocks, go through the door at a hundred miles an hour. The fact that you haven’t dotted all the i’s and crossed all the t’s is irrelevant. I think that is what has messed up a lot of American corporations. They got so enamored with their strategic plans, they forgot how to act.”

Thus, having a clear purpose, setting strong goals, and applying strategic thinking may help you defeat even the strongest enemy or overcome the worst adversity.

The real lesson is that there is never one way; we need to be ﬂexible. The great oak with strength of root will break if it does not bend. All learning must be accompanied by action.
