ore than 100 clients, family, friends and beauty bloggers gathered in the Verona salon on Saturday October 17th to toast their fifth anniversary. The space was beautifully decorated in black, white and gold and the fashion-forward, dressed-to- impress crowd enjoyed an open bar and passed hors d’oeuvres. Food was provided by neighbors, The Pizza Terminal and Restaurant. Cupcakes were from Baked Bouquet, also in Verona. Makeup artists treated partygoers to makeovers at the Vincent Longo station. A PCA Skin Scanner analyzed skin for sun damage and provided a personalized prescription of products to fight inflammation and hyperpigmentation. In support of breast cancer awareness women were offered complimentary pink nails and hair extensions. A number of raffles were held throughout the evening with the winners going home with the latest products. The highlight of the evening was the emotional champagne toast from Julio thanking his staff and family for their support in his success. Julio summed up the past 5 years like this, “I’ve watched this salon go from a dream to a reality. As it became successful I’ve been guided by three principles: “Always put God and family first,” “Never forget where you started, so you can always see how far you’ve come” and “Always do your very best, so you never ask yourself, what could I have done better.”

Rare Exposition Novelty Pool Tables at Game Room Store

he Game Room in Fairfield, a recreational equipment retailer specializing in pool tables, has recently acquired two rare and exquisite Exposition Novelty pool tables by Brunswick Billiards. The pool tables, which were originally introduced in 1878, feature unique patterns, exceptional craftsmanship, beautiful inlays and elegantly carved legs, all of which represent the contrast between the decade’s sophisticated culture of innovation and the country’s untamed West. The table was a judge’s favorite of its time, having won gold medals in national Expositions. According to J.R. Masters of The Game Room, “The pool table is exclusive to the area. I had one customer that bought one four years ago who lives in Rumsen.”

Its rarity is just one of the many factors that makes the table so attractive. Both its heritage and its design represent a bold era of art and culture in The United States and around the world. Brunswick Billiards revived “The Exposition Novelty” pool table in a limited edition of 25 tables to celebrate and honor its 165th anniversary. Each table has a limited edition brass Brunswick emblem, as well as a matching wall-mounted cue rack and a limited edition Brunswick brand Exposition Novelty Cue. Don’t let this rare opportunity pass by. Visit The Game Room at 461 US-46 in Fairfield. For more information, call 973-227-2245 or visit www.thegameroomstore.com.

SERVING UP SAVINGS 10 Sparkling Years

D

r. Natasha Mathias, DMD of Sparkles Dentistry for Children in Montclair is celebrating her 10th year in business. The practice, which looks more like an inviting yellow house rather than a dentist’s office, “is a space that calms patients but also keeps them engaged,” she stated. “Having worked and trained for several years, I knew that I wanted to make my practice inviting and not just non-threatening for my patients so that they will want to come in and try it.” In addition to dentistry, Mathias also offers patients a variety of other services, such as sedation, orthodontics and speech, and cognitive and feeding therapy.

Dr. Mathias is also involved in community outreach and volunteering. The practice hands out 1,000 toothbrushes a year and she visits many preschools throughout Essex County to talk about oral health. She also devotes time toward mentoring college and high school students who plan on going into health care. According to Dr. Mathias, her greatest success in her ten years in business has been that “my practice has become what I envisioned it to be and even pediatric dentists and specialists refer patients to my office.” Sparkles Dentistry is located at 76 Bellevue Avenue in Montclair. For more information, visit www.sparklesdentistry.com or call 973-744-3127.

FDA Approves Radiesse for Hands Rejuvenation

R

adiesse ,the first and only filler approved by the FDA for hands rejuvenation, is now available at Aurora DeJuliis, MD in Montclair, NJ. We are excited to be one of the first Medi-Spas in Montclair to be able to offer Radiesse for the hands to our patients. I have been trained and I am certified on the proper technique for administering the treatment for the safe and effective outcome for my patients,” said Dr. DeJuliis.

“In recent years I have seen an increase in the number of patients seeking aesthetic treatments for their hands. As we age we observe collagen loss, and more prominence of blood vessels. Sun damage and age spots contribute to make the hands appear even older,” stated Dr. DeJuliis. Dr. Aurora DeJuliis offers total hands improvement. Volume loss, dark spots and skin thinning can all be corrected. To learn more, please visit www.auroradejuliismd.com or call 973-338-6300.

A Cut Above with Kings Own By Angela Sabarese

K

ings Food Markets recently unveiled its own line of gourmet foods and everyday favorites, offering curated products with high quality and outstanding value to the discerning customer. The upscale grocery market’s private label brand, Kings Own, is unique in its range that includes both everyday essentials and specialty items. Attending the release event for Kings Own, I learned first-hand of the high standards that Kings considers when

selecting a product for inclusion in the line. According to Antonio Acosta, Specialty Private Label Manager, “Kings is one hundred percent committed to customers’ inspiration for food.” Recognizing that its customers want freshness, quality and authenticity, Kings Own goes above and beyond to ensure they get it.

why. The Roasted Garlic Hummus has a soft, creamy texture with a light, natural garlic flavor that is not overpowering. The Margherita frozen pizza, topped with mozzarella, diced tomatoes and basil is light and delightful. Premium Italian gelato in flavors such as Amaretto and Latte Macchiato complete a meal perfectly.

At the event, Product Development Chef Maral Banks prepared Black Pearl Salmon topped with Kings Own Pineapple Jalapeno Glaze, with a side of Kings Own Haricot Vert. I had the opportunity to observe her as she showed how easily and quickly delicious meals can be created with limited, simple ingredients from the Kings Own line. The tenderness of the fish, sweetness of the glaze and pleasing flavor of the Haricot Vert had me convinced that Kings means business with its pledge to quality and freshness.

Kings will be rolling out a range of Kings Own items across its stores, providing customers with new options in every department. From household essentials like orange juice, syrup and eggs to organic and specialty products such as signature sauces and olive oils, imported gelato and chef-prepared foods, Kings is continuing to raise the bar by seeking out the most unique and rare finds. Organic products are a major focus of Kings Own, including a range of organic pastas, herbs and tomatoes, chips and beans, as well as a selection of honey flavors—to name just a few. As the line continues to expand, from 350 to at least 700 items, the focus will shift to more specialty products.

Chef Banks noted that “each Kings Own product is thoughtfully selected and, as a whole, the brand is rising to the top of the best seller items.” I can understand 22

Expanding a Car Dealership Legacy: A Turbo-Charged Executive’s Strategy for Success

J

udith Schumacher-Tilton is a rarity. As one of only a few female car dealership owners, the president of Schumacher Chevrolet Auto Group is expanding the stellar reputation established by her father and brother. After losing her father in 1998 and one week later her brother Ken being diagnosed with terminal cancer, she was left to run the family business. “It was important for me to keep this legacy alive,” she says. In the ensuing years what began as a one-car showroom in Little Falls in 1932, grew to a second dealership in Denville (formerly Gearhart Chevrolet) and the addition of a third dealership in Clifton. “I have been able to grow the family business with my two sons, Stephen Tilton Jr. and Kenneth Tilton,” she says. The emphasis on family is key. “A family business is at the core of what has built this country. I feel passionately about it.” Schumacher-Tilton is very passionate about a value-based corporate culture that promotes trust. “Trust is an important factor in gaining and keeping customers. You can buy a car anywhere, but the integrity of our dealerships is the essential ingredient and what makes us so successful.” Integrity and trust is something she has imbued in her more than 200 employees. “They treat customers with respect, value their opinions and listen to what they have to say.” The result is a service and parts department rated the best in the state, competitive and fair pricing on new and pre-owned cars, a line of vehicles that caters to all needs whether sporty, family or commercial, convenient hours, free loaner cars and a host of other essential customer services.

Judith Schumacher-Tilton

“You can buy a car anywhere, but the integrity of our dealerships is the essential ingredient and what makes us so successful.” With an inventory of over 1,000 new and pre-owned vehicles, the Schumacher Chevrolet Auto Group is the highest volume Chevy dealer in the state. Schumacher-Tilton’s acumen has not gone unnoticed by the auto industry. She was nominated as 2012 TIME Dealer of the Year—becoming New Jersey’s first-ever female to compete for this prestigious national award. She won the Northeast Regional title, published in TIME Magazine. Her dealerships have also received the Women’s Choice Award from WomenCertified® for outstanding femalefriendly customer experience, an honor they have received every year since 2012. Marketing to women in a traditionally male dominated industry is, perhaps, where Schumacher-Tilton is making her greatest impact. With women purchasing 65 percent of all new cars according to Par Excellence Magazine, Schumacher-Tilton is forging a successful business strategy while gaining national renown for her dealerships. Schumacher-Tilton serves as chairman of the General Motors Women’s Dealer

Advisory Council, a select group of ten women who are a national voice for female car buyers. She is a mother of three and grandmother of six children, and lives in Essex County with her husband, Stephen. Locally, Schumacher-Tilton serves on the Montclair State University Foundation Board, the Boys and Girls Club of Clifton Trustee Board, the Lakeland Bank Advisory Board and the trustee board for the Passaic County 200 Club. With Stephen Jr. she established Give the Kids Hope Foundation. Inc., a charitable organization that supports educational and recreational opportunities for underprivileged children in New Jersey. The foundation’s mission attracted David Harris of the NY JETS, who has given tremendous support to benefit programs at Camp Hope in West Milford, NJ. Harris is a spokesperson for the foundation’s annual golf event named in his honor. (Info: www.givethekidshope.org) The Schumacher Chevrolet Auto Group has three dealerships in Little Falls, Clifton and Denville. www.schumacherchevy.com

Surprising Superfoods for Baby Boomers

A

n estimated 77 million baby boomers represent the largest generation of Americans born in U.S. history. Many are embracing their golden years and taking a proactive approach to their wellbeing. If you are a boomer, you understand nutrition is fundamental to maintaining your health. But do you know some foods are particularly powerful in helping you age well? “Certain foods provide nutrients that are extremely beneficial for baby boomers,” says Kristen Johnson, registered dietician, nutrition expert at On Target Living, and author of the newly released cookbook Target To Table: Healthy and Delicious Meals One Superfood at a Time. “Eating these superfoods regularly is one of the easiest yet most impactful things boomers can do for their health.” Johnson’s top five superfoods for baby boomers include:

➊ FRESH COLD WATER FISH “On top of being a delicious lean protein, fish is loaded with omegas-3s that keep our brains healthy as we age,” says Johnson. “EPA and DHA are the type of omega-3 fat found in fish and are especially important for a healthy heart, hormonal balance, energy and mood.” Since most of us don’t have access to fresh, wild-caught or coldwater fish on a daily basis, she suggests taking a high-quality cod liver oil daily, like Nordic Naturals Orange-Flavored Cod Liver Oil. “There’s no fishy smell and a quality you can taste,” says Johnson. “Also, cod liver oil naturally contains vitamin D, which is needed to absorb calcium.”

➋ SUPER SEEDS Certain seeds, like flax, chia and hemp seeds, have extensive health benefits and more boomers are incorporating them into their daily meals and snacks. “Flaxseeds and chia seeds are high in omega-3s and fiber and contain antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial properties,” says Johnson. “Hemp seeds are high in healthy omega-6s, along with being high in protein. These super seeds help balance hormones and can also help with digestion.” Easy ways to start incorporating seeds into your daily routine is to add them to smoothies or sprinkle on yogurt or oatmeal.

➌ SUPER VEGETABLES “Vegetables provide many nutrients, including potassium, fiber, folate, vitamins A, E, C and are alkalizing, meaning they neutralize acids in the body and help your body thrive and stay mineralized,” says Johnson. Try to get a variety of super vegetables into your daily diet including leafy greens, bok choy, broccoli, mushrooms, beets, celery, carrots, onions and garlic. Leafy greens and broccoli are especially high in calcium and vitamin C needed to keep your immune system healthy and prevent sickness. Beets and celery are extremely detoxifying. Garlic is part of the onion family and contributes to a healthy immune system while helping to lower inflammation. 42

Our Focus is YOU! ➍ SUPER FRUITS “Fruits are packed with flavor and are high in vitamins, minerals, fiber, cancer-fighting antioxidants, and are extremely alkalizing,” says Johnson. Strive to get a variety of super fruits in your daily diet including strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, lemons, limes, apples and bananas. Dried fruits like figs, dates, goji berries and raisins are high in the calming mineral magnesium which helps to relax the mind and body and aid in digestion.

Buy one pair of glasses, get the other 50% OFF!

➎ ORGANIC VIRGIN COCONUT OIL Lately there has been a lot of buzz about coconut oil and for good reason, explains Johnson. “Coconut oil is a healthy saturated fat high in lauric, capric and caprylic acids which have antiviral and antifungal properties contributing to a healthy digestion,” she says. “Coconut oil also contains medium-chain fatty acids that can aid in a healthy metabolism.” Try using coconut oil in baked goods or to replace other oils when sautéing or stir-frying. It’s also a fantastic butter substitute on toast and other foods. Start the day on the right foot with this easy-to-make smoothie that features several of Johnson’s recommended superfoods. This recipe can be found on Johnson’s blog at www.targettotable.com.

Cornucopia Workshop

Your Home for Preventive Care 2014 GOLD RECIPIENT At Josephsen Family Dental, We Listen! Here are several of the questions that we were asked just this past week… “Why are brushing and flossing so important?” Beginning the minute that we are born, a thin, sticky film of bacteria (called plaque) always wants to grow in our mouths and on our teeth. And even though the outer layer of our teeth (called the enamel) is the strongest biological material in our bodies, these tiny little microscopic bacteria can actually dissolve the enamel. When the plaque touches the enamel and the enamel gets dissolved, this causes tooth decay and cavities. Plaque is also a major culprit in the development of gum disease, too. When you thoroughly brush your teeth, and clean those surfaces between your teeth that your brush cannot reach by flossing, you remove many of these plaque-causing bacteria, and by doing so, your greatly lessen the chances of cavities and gum disease. As a minimum, we recommend that you brush two times each day for two minutes each time. Two minutes doesn’t sound like much—but time yourself or your children—most of us don’t brush nearly long enough! Be sure to brush both the front and back sides of your teeth, as well as the biting surfaces, and your tongue, too! And always supervise your younger children up to age eight—as cute as they may be trying to brush by themselves, they just don’t have the dexterity yet to reach all areas thoroughly. “It’s Halloween—what about all the candy?” The bacteria in plaque can eat just about any kind of food that we put into our mouths. But remember that the sweeter the food, and the stickier the food, the easier and the longer these bacteria can eat the food and then make the acids which dissolve your teeth. For example, if you compare a piece of milk chocolate to candy corn, the bacteria can feast on the sticky, sugary candy far easier and for a longer time than they will on the chocolate. So, it’s best to try your best to limit sticky, sugary foods all year long! But if you have any leftover Halloween candy, or if your children receive any treats that are less-than-desirable for the health of their teeth, please bring them to our office…we will trade with you for children’s toothbrushes and toothpaste, and we will make a donation from our office in your honor to our local food bank! We hope that you find these answers helpful.

Cooking with… Lou Seger, Chef/Owner of LuNello

P

icture this: a warm and inviting table filled with a variety of pumpkins, squashes and other gourds reaped from the autumnal harvest. These fresh ingredients are a chef’s dream, as Chef Lou Seger, the chef and owner of LuNello, certainly can attest. Following his most recent trip to his favorite farm in the Catskills, Chef Lou returned with boxes of such pumpkins and squash. And it is a good thing, since he has to satisfy the requests of his loyal customers for these delicacies. Those that have dined at LuNello know only to well the fabulous creations Chef Lou makes with these seasonal vegetables. For Suburban Essex readers he is sharing a simple, though elegant recipe for stuffed Delicata squash with a mushroom Risotto. This tasty dish is perfect to serve on a cold November night. The recipe provided is vegetarian, although Chef Lou says that this dish can be made with many other ingredients as well. For example, he suggests browning sweet sausage in the pan before adding the onions to make a hearty, meat-lovers’ meal. So, take advantage of the current crop of delicious squash, add in a splash of creativity, and enjoy.

DIAMOND MINDS By Barry Farber

To Your Health…

W

e can create a healthy lifestyle through what we eat, how we exercise and how we think. There are many paths to take, but I’ve found the best way to choose the right program is figuring out what works best for you. To make these discoveries, collect information on healthy eating and exercise from qualified resources, apply that knowledge, discard what is not useful and create an ongoing system. It should work best for your type of body and your individual situation. The simpler the better. John Gallucci, Jr. is the President of JAG Physical Therapy, the Medical Coordinator for Major League Soccer (MLS) and Sports Medicine consultant for professional athletes in the NHL, NFL, NBA, MLB, and USA Wrestling. Recently I sat down with John and asked him for his insight. Here are John’s top 3 pointers on living a healthier life: 1. Hydration. The first thing that people need to understand is that the body needs water. The body needs to stay hydrated with at least six to eight 8-ounce glasses of fluid a day. If 50% of your fluid intake is water, then it’s a homerun. Nutritionists will recommend six 8-ounce glasses of water. Staying hydrated makes the kidneys and blood cleaner. The oxygen uptake in the body also improves.

“It is not a daily increase, but a daily decrease. Hack away at the inessentials.” —Bruce Lee

2. A healthy heart. The most important muscle in the body is the heart. We need to be doing aerobic activity for 30 to 40 minutes a day, 6 to 7 days a week. These exercises could be a stroll with your wife or husband, a jog, a swim, a game of tennis, or a bike ride. Every day, 6 to 7 days a week, your body should do something aerobically. Do you realize what the decrease in cardiac incidents would be or how much cholesterol we would decrease if people truly did something aerobic each and every day? 3. Strength and flexibility. You don’t need to be a bodybuilder in order to do simple exercises. You can do band exercises, use weight machines or use free weights. Do what you enjoy. Push-ups, pull-ups and sit-ups are fantastic. Also, it is always important to warm up before you stretch. You can’t stretch a cold rubber band. I always tell people you should be perspiring before you stretch. A lot less time would be spent in the doctor’s office if people could stick to these three points. People would also save a lot of money.
