ore than 100 clients, family, friends and beauty bloggers gathered in the Verona salon on Saturday October 17th to toast their fifth anniversary. The space was beautifully decorated in black, white and gold and the fashion-forward, dressed-to- impress crowd enjoyed an open bar and passed hors d’oeuvres. Food was provided by neighbors, The Pizza Terminal and Restaurant. Cupcakes were from Baked Bouquet, also in Verona. Makeup artists treated partygoers to makeovers at the Vincent Longo station. A PCA Skin Scanner analyzed skin for sun damage and provided a personalized prescription of products to fight inflammation and hyperpigmentation. In support of breast cancer awareness women were offered complimentary pink nails and hair extensions. A number of raffles were held throughout the evening with the winners going home with the latest products. The highlight of the evening was the emotional champagne toast from Julio thanking his staff and family for their support in his success. Julio summed up the past 5 years like this, “I’ve watched this salon go from a dream to a reality. As it became successful I’ve been guided by three principles: “Always put God and family first,” “Never forget where you started, so you can always see how far you’ve come” and “Always do your very best, so you never ask yourself, what could I have done better.”

Rare Exposition Novelty Pool Tables at Game Room Store

he Game Room in Fairfield, a recreational equipment retailer specializing in pool tables, has recently acquired two rare and exquisite Exposition Novelty pool tables by Brunswick Billiards. The pool tables, which were originally introduced in 1878, feature unique patterns, exceptional craftsmanship, beautiful inlays and elegantly carved legs, all of which represent the contrast between the decade’s sophisticated culture of innovation and the country’s untamed West. The table was a judge’s favorite of its time, having won gold medals in national Expositions. According to J.R. Masters of The Game Room, “The pool table is exclusive to the area. I had one customer that bought one four years ago who lives in Rumsen.”

Expanding a Car Dealership Legacy: A Turbo-Charged Executive’s Strategy for Success

udith Schumacher-Tilton is a rarity. As one of only a few female car dealership owners, the president of Schumacher Chevrolet Auto Group is expanding the stellar reputation established by her father and brother. After losing her father in 1998 and one week later her brother Ken being diagnosed with terminal cancer, she was left to run the family business. “It was important for me to keep this legacy alive,” she says. In the ensuing years what began as a one-car showroom in Little Falls in 1932, grew to a second dealership in Denville (formerly Gearhart Chevrolet) and the addition of a third dealership in Clifton. “I have been able to grow the family business with my two sons, Stephen Tilton Jr. and Kenneth Tilton,” she says. The emphasis on family is key. “A family business is at the core of what has built this country. Locally, Schumacher-Tilton serves on the Montclair State University Foundation Board, the Boys and Girls Club of Clifton Trustee Board, the Lakeland Bank Advisory Board and the trustee board for the Passaic County 200 Club. With Stephen Jr. she established Give the Kids Hope Foundation. Inc., a charitable organization that supports educational and recreational opportunities for underprivileged children in New Jersey. Here are several of the questions that we were asked just this past week… “Why are brushing and flossing so important?” Beginning the minute that we are born, a thin, sticky film of bacteria (called plaque) always wants to grow in our mouths and on our teeth. And even though the outer layer of our teeth (called the enamel) is the strongest biological material in our bodies, these tiny little microscopic bacteria can actually dissolve the enamel. When the plaque touches the enamel and the enamel gets dissolved, this causes tooth decay and cavities. Plaque is also a major culprit in the development of gum disease, too. When you thoroughly brush your teeth, and clean those surfaces between your teeth that your brush cannot reach by flossing, you remove many of these plaque-causing bacteria, and by doing so, your greatly lessen the chances of cavities and gum disease. As a minimum, we recommend that you brush two times each day for two minutes each time. Two minutes doesn’t sound like much—but time yourself or your children—most of us don’t brush nearly long enough! Be sure to brush both the front and back sides of your teeth, as well as the biting surfaces, and your tongue, too! And always supervise your younger children up to age eight—as cute as they may be trying to brush by themselves, they just don’t have the dexterity yet to reach all areas thoroughly. “It’s Halloween—what about all the candy?” The bacteria in plaque can eat just about any kind of food that we put into our mouths. But remember that the sweeter the food, and the stickier the food, the easier and the longer these bacteria can eat the food and then make the acids which dissolve your teeth. For example, if you compare a piece of milk chocolate to candy corn, the bacteria can feast on the sticky, sugary candy far easier and for a longer time than they will on the chocolate. So, it’s best to try your best to limit sticky, sugary foods all year long! But if you have any leftover Halloween candy, or if your children receive any treats that are less-than-desirable for the health of their teeth, please bring them to our office…we will trade with you for children’s toothbrushes and toothpaste, and we will make a donation from our office in your honor to our local food bank! Cooking with… Lou Seger, Chef/Owner of LuNello

icture this: a warm and inviting table filled with a variety of pumpkins, squashes and other gourds reaped from the autumnal harvest. These fresh ingredients are a chef’s dream, as Chef Lou Seger, the chef and owner of LuNello, certainly can attest. Following his most recent trip to his favorite farm in the Catskills, Chef Lou returned with boxes of such pumpkins and squash. And it is a good thing, since he has to satisfy the requests of his loyal customers for these delicacies. Those that have dined at LuNello know only to well the fabulous creations Chef Lou makes with these seasonal vegetables. For Suburban Essex readers he is sharing a simple, though elegant recipe for stuffed Delicata squash with a mushroom Risotto. This tasty dish is perfect to serve on a cold November night. The recipe provided is vegetarian, although Chef Lou says that this dish can be made with many other ingredients as well. For example, he suggests browning sweet sausage in the pan before adding the onions to make a hearty, meat-lovers’ meal. So, take advantage of the current crop of delicious squash, add in a splash of creativity, and enjoy.

DELICATO SQUASH Topped with Mushroom Risotto INGREDIENTS: 3 Delicata Squash (same size) 1 small onion, diced 4 Tbls. olive oil 2 tsp. butter (optional) 1 lb. sliced mushrooms (shitake, Portobello, cremini, (same stems to make broth) oyster DIRECTIONS: Cut the Delicata squash in half and scoop out the seeds (roast for garnish). Place Delicata squash on a baking sheet, drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Roast in a 400ºF oven for 35 minutes. Let Cool. While squash cooks, prepare the mushrooms. Heat 2 Tbls. olive oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Add mushrooms, salt and pepper and cook down until all of the water is extracted and mushrooms have a caramelized color. Set mushrooms aside. Heat 2 Tbls. of olive oil in large saucepan over medium heat. Add the onions

2 cups Arborio Rice 8-10 cups mushroom stock 1 tsp. washed and strained, dried porcini mushrooms (soaked in water) Truffle butter (optional) ¼ cup Grana Padano cheese, grated Salt and pepper

and cook until transparent. Add the rice (Important: when adding the rice to the oil, coat the rice with the oil for 3-4 minutes for even cooking.) Next, add two ladles of mushroom stock. Add the dried porcini to the pan with its liquid. Continue to cook the rice, constantly stirring and adding ½ cup of broth at a time until broth is absorbed for about 30 minutes. During the last 5 minutes of cooking the rice, add the cooked mushrooms and combine with the rice.

Padano cheese. Stuff the risotto and mushroom mixture into the Delicata squash and place in broil to brown.

Season with salt and pepper to taste. To finish add truffle butter and fold into the rice. Add a touch of grated Grana

Garnish with Pomegranate seeds, squash seeds, brown butter sauce and chopped parsley. EXTRA RECIPE: Delicato Squash Chips. Cut squash, take the ends off then wash, let dry and slice thin using a madaline. Lay chips on baking sheet topped with parchment paper. Drizzle olive oil, salt and pepper and bake at 250º for one hour.

e can create a healthy lifestyle through what we eat, how we exercise and how we think. There are many paths to take, but I’ve found the best way to choose the right program is figuring out what works best for you. To make these discoveries, collect information on healthy eating and exercise from qualified resources, apply that knowledge, discard what is not useful and create an ongoing system. It should work best for your type of body and your individual situation. The simpler the better. John Gallucci, Jr. is the President of JAG Physical Therapy, the Medical Coordinator for Major League Soccer (MLS) and Sports Medicine consultant for professional athletes in the NHL, NFL, NBA, MLB, and USA Wrestling. Recently I sat down with John and asked him for his insight. Here are John’s top 3 pointers on living a healthier life: 1. Hydration. The first thing that people need to understand is that the body needs water. The body needs to stay hydrated with at least six to eight 8-ounce glasses of fluid a day. If 50% of your fluid intake is water, then it’s a homerun. Nutritionists will recommend six 8-ounce glasses of water. Staying hydrated makes the kidneys and blood cleaner. The oxygen uptake in the body also improves.

2. A healthy heart. The most important muscle in the body is the heart. We need to be doing aerobic activity for 30 to 40 minutes a day, 6 to 7 days a week. These exercises could be a stroll with your wife or husband, a jog, a swim, a game of tennis, or a bike ride. Every day, 6 to 7 days a week, your body should do something aerobically. Do you realize what the decrease in cardiac incidents would be or how much cholesterol we would decrease if people truly did something aerobic each and every day? 3. Strength and flexibility. You don’t need to be a bodybuilder in order to do simple exercises. You can do band exercises, use weight machines or use free weights. Do what you enjoy. Push-ups, pull-ups and sit-ups are fantastic. Also, it is always important to warm up before you stretch. You can’t stretch a cold rubber band. I always tell people you should be perspiring before you stretch. A lot less time would be spent in the doctor’s office if people could stick to these three points. People would also save a lot of money.
