Inside ESSEX Caring, Honest Service at Upscale Consignment By Katrina Musto
J
eanne Nicholas knows clothes. The former manager of Daffy’s in East Hanover and current owner of Upscale Consignment, caters to women who have an eye for style. Having been at Daffy’s for 24 years, Nicholas not only learned valuable ways to run a business but how to help customers find that unique handbag to match a particular outfit. With designers such as Gucci, Prada and Theory, customers enjoy finding high-end gems while being greeted with a smile from Nicholas and her staff. “We wanted to open a consignment store that not only specialized in designer clothing but that was a nice atmosphere to shop,” she explains. “We believe a more customized service is what sets us apart-we never send our customers out looking bad in a item purchased at our store!” Going on their 4th year in business, loyal customers love finding that great designer piece with a price tag that can’t be beat. uthor and counselor Andrew Evangelista’s You Can’t See It. It’s “Write” In Front of Me provides a way to help teens through writing and journaling. Evangelista states, “Journaling can help give teens ideas, hope, strength or just a place to keep their thoughts.” As a creative workbook-style journal for adolescents and teens, it features prompts that guide teens as they navigate the difficult years between childhood and adulthood. It provides a safe space for teens to think about their ideas or vent about their feelings, and ultimately guides their thoughts through writing. It is the perfect tool for psychologists, school counselors, and even parents to give to middle and high school aged kids to help them better understand themselves. Andrew Evangelista, LCSW, LCADC, DRCC is a Cedar Grove resident who owns the Center for Creative Lifestyles in Caldwell—a private outpatient counseling center. He has worked as a counselor to middle and high school as well college students for over 35 years. The Center for Creative Lifestyles is located at 66 Roseland Avenue in Caldwell. The 32-year-old Millburn resident and Montclair State University graduate hiked 2,600 miles on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) and it has changed his life. New to hiking, David explained, “Hiking the PCT was my first time backpacking and was an eye-opening experience.”

Going from Mexico to Canada, through California, Oregon, and Washington, David Cuomo his journey included desert landscapes, snowy mountains, and multiple national parks. “I walked from sunrise to sunset everyday and came to find how peaceful the wilderness is,” he said, “I’m very grateful for trail angels (locals who help hikers without expecting anything in return) and my family, who sent resupply packages with food.” Now back to work, David inspires others to appreciate Mother Nature. He said, “In addition to exercise, long distance hiking and walking lets you get to know nature and yourself.”

Designing Home Sweet Home with Decorating Den By Jessica Schiffenhaus Photos by Dan Epstein
F
rom an early age, Valerie Ruddy could be found sewing window treatments, picking out paint colors and rearranging furniture. “My mother used to say, ‘I never know what I’m going to find when I open your bedroom door—Oh, that’s where that table went!’” recalled Ruddy, owner of Decorating Den in Verona. Ruddy graduated college with an art degree, but spent several years the insurance industry until she decided to reclaim her love for design and returned to design school, eventually opening her own decorating business in 2008. “It was clear that this is what I need to do on a regular basis,” said Ruddy. Since then, she’s had rooms featured on HGTV.com, is a three-time Best of Essex award winner and absolutely loves every minute of it.
“It’s all about listening very carefully to the client’s need and making it a process they can enjoy. At the end of the day, I want everyone to love their home and view it as their sanctuary.” —Valerie Ruddy One of the most important things about Ruddy is her ability to interpret many different styles. She carefully interviews each client to figure out what makes them happy, then works to design well edited, beautiful and highly functional spaces for them. “It’s all about listening very carefully to the client’s need and making it a process they can enjoy. At the end of the day, I want everyone to love their home and view it as their sanctuary,” said Ruddy. The initial visit with Ruddy can take anywhere from 90 minutes to two hours. From the start, she’ll begin to define the parameters of the project - from what the client wants the space to look and feel like, to the different activities it will be used for and how many people it will need to be accommodated there. She’ll even ask questions like, “Do you like to sink into your sofa or do you like to sit up a little higher?“
Valerie Ruddy
Once Ruddy and her clients have settled on a proposed plan, she and her staff can project manage everything. “We’re on-site for every furniture delivery and window treatment or art installation. Your window treatments are going to take three hours? I’m there for three hours until they’re done to a level I can feel proud of,” explained Ruddy. To prospective clients, Ruddy’s advice is to figure out what kind of help you need ahead of time. Discuss who will be involved in the decision-making process in your household, the styles and comfort levels of the things that you like and a budget everyone can feel comfortable with. “Your home is your investment. You should love it and want to use every inch of it. If you don’t love the way it looks or functions, we will help you to change that.”

Simple Steps to Protect Your Family from Fire, Carbon Monoxide and Other Threats
W
hile life can be complicated, sometimes the simple solutions are the best ones, particularly when it comes to protecting your family from household hazards. The “Change Your Clock, Change Your Batteries” program espouses that philosophy. For the 29th consecutive year, the campaign led by the Energizer brand and the International Association of Fire Chiefs, has reminded families of the life-saving habit of changing and testing the batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors when most of the country sets their clocks back at the end of daylight saving time. This year, that is November 6. A whopping 50 percent of home smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors have non-working batteries, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

“A home that contains smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors is only safer if these devices actually work,” says Michelle Atkinson, chief consumer officer, Energizer. “Testing your devices and updating their batteries are simple and critical steps to keeping your family comfortable and secure.” “Smart connected home technologies are keeping families safer, when operational,” says Atkinson. “Remember, these tools, along with flashlights and other home safety devices require reliable battery power as well.” A critical yet simple safety practice is to keep flashlights with fresh batteries at your bedside for help in finding your way out of your house and signaling for help in the event of a fire or other emergency. Also, keep a stash of high-quality 9V, C,

BOON THAI KITCHEN Thai Food Takes Livingston
By Rhonda L. Rivera, Photos by Dan Epstein
L
ast December, Livingston became the proud home to the sister restaurant of Montclair’s Spice II: Boon Thai Kitchen. Named for the generational given name of the owner— Boon is the first name of the owner, her father and grandfather—the restaurant offers fresh and flavorful fare in a comfortable setting.

and taro, wrapped in a vegetable wrapper and topped with a tiny piece of fried onion. Light yet flavorsome, the homemade bundles are the perfect start to the meal. Another delightful first course is the Duck Roll ($11). The roll is filled with a good amount of well-prepared duck, mango, apple, red onion and lettuce. Unlike other places, the duck is not greasy at all and the sweet mango lightens up the dish with a deft hand.
For dinner, an excellent option is the Tilapia in Mango Salad ($19). The dish has a fruity sweetness, thanks in part to the mango and special sauce. Accompanied by a very tasty salad, which is available for $9 as a side, this main course is a star. Alternatively, order the Duck in Orange Sauce ($22) for another delicious entrée. Like the Duck Roll, the protein is neither gamey nor greasy. The sauce provides a delightful sweetness that does not overpower, but rather allows the roasted duck to take center stage. To end the meal, opt for the Thai Coconut Jelly ($7), which is attractively served in small mason jars. Reminiscent of a macaroon, the jelly’s gorgeous presentation elevates the dessert to the next level. Boon Thai Kitchen prides itself on offering homemade delicacies. If an item is not on the main or special menus, ask the server. The restaurant makes every effort to accommodate off-menu requests and surpass its client’s expectations.
The most difficult aspect of this restaurant—aside from selecting among Thai favorites—is actually locating it. Set back from Northfield Road by a good thirty feet, Boon Thai Kitchen is preceded by Infinity clothing store and its parking lot, as well as the eatery’s own parking lot. For a landmark, look for the Shell gas station across the street. The slight inconvenience of actually spotting Boon Thai Kitchen definitely is worth the challenge.

Diamond MINDS
Get Over It!
Don’t let resentments drag you down. In the end, it’s all up to you.
O
ne of my favorite bands, The Eagles, wrote a song poking fun at people who constantly whine that they are “victims of this, victims of that,” yet never take responsibility for their lives. The Eagles advice? “Get over it!” How many people are living with grudges, anger and resentment from the past? It can eat at your insides and do more damage than you think. What’s done is done. And surprisingly, you can gain much from past difficulties—depending on how you look at it. For example, a study of two sons of an alcoholic father found that one grew up to become a successful businessman, while his brother was living on the streets, a hopeless drunk. Both sons were asked: “Why did you end up this way?” And each had the same answer: “What would you expect with a father like mine?” It’s all about choices. We can let all the past experiences and people who have “hurt” us make us bitter or better. If we choose to let anger and resentment seethe, they can become like poisons destroying us—and
even end up killing us with unnecessary stress. A USA Today study found that more than 80% of doctors’ visits are for illnesses related to stress. Now, I was about to write some tips on how to get over disappointments and live a more stress-free lifestyle when I thought I’d reverse the process and look at it from a whole new angle. Here are several tips on how to be miserable. Yes, miserable. You may even know a few people like this—and they wouldn’t trade their misery for all the riches in the world. Tip #1: Believe the world is against you. Cut yourself off from the world and then somehow, an inner voice tells you that everyone’s out to get you. You have to keep a negative attitude toward everyone— because for some odd reason, people’s reaction will mirror your approach.
Barry Farber
(and we do have a name for anything you can think up) that defines why people should feel sorry for you. Tell everyone your “diagnosis” to rationalize your misery. This should work well for a while, and when it gets stale, you can search for something else to evoke sympathy. Tip #4: Blame everyone else for your problems. Never look inside for a solution. Your troubles are always because someone else got lucky and you ended up suffering because of it. Tip #5: And finally, hold these words close to your heart at all times: anger, jealousy, self-pity, selfishness, self-absorption and revenge. You get the point. Attitude determines your altitude in most situations—some look up and some look down. We have the final choice. If it’s going to be, it’s up to me.
Tip #2: Get all wrapped up in yourself. It’s not time to think of people’s needs; after all, you should always come first.
The writer Maya Angelou phrased it beautifully: “If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude. Don’t complain.”
Tip #3: Find an illness in a medical book
Or, as the Eagles put it, “Get over it.”
