IMANI Celebrates 20 Years

20th Annual Holiday Open Studio

O

ver the past 20 years, IMANI, community-based organization offering education support programs for students, has made tremendous progress toward leveling the playing field in the Montclair Public Schools. Through a unique collaboration with parent volunteers, school district officials, and community leaders, the organization has worked to narrow the achievement gap between minority and white students.

A

ward-winning, nationallyrecognized artist, Lisa Palombo, announced her 20th annual Holiday Open Studio, to be held Saturday and Sunday, November 23 and 24, from 12pm to 5pm at Lisa Palombo Studios, 55 Mountain Avenue in Caldwell. The studio gallery is free and open to the public with parking along the street.

In celebration of twenty years, IMANI will hold a 20th Anniversary Celebration and Fundraiser on Saturday, November 16 at St. Luke’s Church in Montclair. The party aims to raise funds to expand their programming, which currently includes SAT Prep, a coding club, summer transition programs, and more.

This year, Lisa Palombo Studios is celebrating their 20th anniversary with custom, celebratory giveaways and 20% specials. To honor the occasion, Lisa Palombo Studios will be unveiling an exciting new line of limited edition champagne glasses, hand-painted by the artist. In addition, the studio will be showcasing a variety of Lisa’s new acrylic on canvas paintings in various sizes as well as featuring some of her classic, most popular series of art over the past twenty years.

Tickets are available online, along with information on donating and sponsorship opportunities. Visit www.imaniprograms.org to learn more.

A Very Happy Pup

She is a striking lass with an unusual striped/mottled pattern to her fur. She loves to run around and play especially with her favorite stringy toys. This playful little tyke has pure kitten power and is sure to please! Good with children. Approximately seven months, spayed and up-to-date on vaccinations.

This handsome guy is Stanley, a 1-yearold Shepherd/Boxer mix. He and his brother were abandoned because they are both partially blind. Now he is in a foster home discovering all the great things for kittens that he didn’t know existed. He even gets to spend all day playing out in the open and not hiding— something he could hardly do on the streets of Newark. He was born approximately March 27 and is neutered, micro-chipped, vaccinated and negative for FIV/ FeLV. If interested in giving Judas Priest a home, apply online. Pursue Physical Fitness Offers NormaTec Gold Standard Athletic Recovery Program

P

rofessional athletes and gym-goers looking to speed up recovery after tough workouts or to improve circulation after long days at work, can now try NormaTec, the gold standard athletic recovery program being offered at Pursue Physical Fitness. This modality was created by a physician and bioengineer and is trusted by 97 percent of professionals. NormaTec improves blood flow using a patented pulsing massage technology. Its system integrates three techniques: 1) Pulsing (mimics muscles’ natural patterns, enhancing blood flow for recovery; 2) Gradients (mimics how bodies circulate blood, and is done at an accelerated pace to speed up recovery); and 3) Distal Release (releases the area farthest away from the heart first, returning blood circulation for each section of the treated area to recover between bouts of pulsing compression). Together, NormaTec’s techniques increase range of motion (flexibility), lessen pain sensitivity (muscle soreness) and leave the user feeling relaxed and refreshed.

Try Cryotherapy for a Better Body and Better Health By Cynthia Burns

W

hole body cryotherapy (WBC) has emerged as an elixir to accelerate recovery from athletic, surgical and injury-related pain. Sisters Emy Kotb and Hanan Aly opened Eclipse Cryo & Float, a premier health and beauty spa, two years ago after each getting pain relief from cryotherapy. Clients welcome the cold when they envelope themselves for three minutes in a chamber swirling with -250 degrees hyper-cooled air. The success of WBC, says Aly, is based on three Rs. “Remove toxins and inflammatory properties out of the blood, replenish blood flow and recover during a period of restoration.” Therapeutically, cryotherapy provides a multitude of benefits: pain management, less muscle spasms, inflammation reduction and increased metabolism. Clients report more energy, improved sleep, better joint function and less stress after undergoing WBC sessions. Eclipse offers several cryotherapy-based and immersive float therapy and beauty treatments. Gift cards, memberships and special price packages available.

Dental Implants Provide Plenty to Smile About By Cynthia Burns, photo by Dan Epstein

anatomy, or jawbone structure, of a patient’s mouth to determine if the patient is a candidate for implants. Digital impression technology ensures the correct size of the replacement tooth. A surgical guide assists in the precise placement of the implant. I often tell patients that I can review the end result before I see the beginning.

How long does it take to get an implant? It varies. The technology lets us get a lot accomplished in one day. Often times, non-removable temporary teeth are placed while the permanent teeth are custommade and then fitted for each patient. The result is a procedure done in less time that is less invasive and most importantly with minimal discomfort.

Is there a segment of the population more likely to get implants? Generally, Baby Boomers, 55 to 75 years old, are among those getting full mouth restorations with implants. Implants are more esthetically pleasing than dentures and bridges and are easy to maintain. Still, any adult can be a candidate for implants.

Are dental implants covered by insurance? Because of implants’ popularity, and supply and demand, the cost has dropped. Many dental insurance plans have begun to cover a portion of the procedure. For patients who do not have coverage D & G Dental offers its own discount and payment plans. Med Dawoud, DMD, FICOI

M

ed Dawoud, DMD, FICOI and founder of D & G Dental provides gentle and effective care for patients. A highly skilled general dentist, he is particularly passionate about dental implants. Here, Dr. Dawoud explains how implant technology has evolved to make the procedure more affordable for patients.

What technological advances have made implant dentistry an option for more patients? One that has changed implant dentistry significantly is the development of 3D dental technology. In-office CT scans provide a 3D view of a patient’s mouth, rather than a traditional 2D X-ray. This 3D image is used to assess the

Do you offer consultations? Whether a patient needs a single tooth implant or a full mouth restoration, we offer a complimentary consultation.

Can Cold Weather Cause

ARTHRITIS SYMPTOMS?

D

o you have a trick knee that can predict rain? Do your hands get sore when the temperature starts to drop? As autumn—and then winter— approaches and the weather changes to colder and damper conditions, many people with arthritis anticipate an uptick in their symptoms.

a 2007 Tufts University study suggests that every 10-degree drop in temperature corresponds with a slight increase in pain for people who have knee osteoarthritis.

“The science is far from clear, but anecdotally, many of our patients notice that their symptoms of osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis are more severe in cold or damp weather,” says Eric Mirsky, MD, chair of Summit Medical Group’s orthopedics department.

One theory that many arthritis researchers have is that precipitation or temperature is not at play when it comes to weather and arthritis symptoms, but rather barometric pressure. Barometric pressure is a measurement of the weight of the air. It is believed that drops in barometric pressure cause the fluid inside joints to swell. For already-inflamed, sore joints, that can mean more pain.

Researchers aren’t sure how—or even if—weather affects the joints. A huge 2017 study published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) found no link between rainy days and joint pain. On the other hand,

“There may be something in the weather— or changes in the weather—that affects symptoms of arthritis,” says Dr. Mirsky.

The most common forms of arthritis (osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis)

dopting a healthy lifestyle is more than just exercise and diet, according to Thelis Negron, founder of MBX—The Mind & Body Experience. It’s all about mind coaching, she said. “Learning to live a healthy lifestyle begins with learning about relationships, not just with people, but with food, exercise, and one’s body,” said Negron, who holds a master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy in addition to several certifications in personal training, life coaching, nutrition, and physical therapy. “In addition to setting up a personal training program, I coach my clients on transforming their negative habits into a healthier lifestyle that will bring lasting results long after the 12 weeks are completed.” Mind coaching, she said, helps get at the root causes of behaviors that are holding individuals back from living a healthy lifestyle. Some of the key components of the MBX 12 Week Program are learning how to build more muscle so that body fat can be reduced, making smarter food choices to attain more energy, and correcting muscular imbalances for a stronger body overall.

Low Back Pain? Cold Laser stimulates healing without surgery. Cold Laser therapy is the most advanced healing technology to regenerate tissue, relieve pain and decrease inflammation. Safe, natural and painless, cold laser emits targeted beams of light photons, allowing deep transmission into tissue to accelerate the healing process. The same technology used in the professional sports world, our cold laser delivers results with no side effects.

MBX, located at the Bellevue Plaza location for two years, welcomes clients of all ages and fitness levels. Clients interested in signing up for the 12-week program receive a $150 consultation, which is applied toward their three-month package if they choose to sign up for the program. “Everyone experiences some road blocks in their health and fitness journey,” she added, “but we teach our clients how to navigate through them on their own for life-long results.”

Thomas & Chris Ma

T.S. Ma: Healthy and Delicious! Photos by Dan Epstein

T.

S. Ma Chinese Cuisine is the Chinese restaurant you have always wanted to visit. The different spin on both traditional Chinese dishes and their own creations you find here revolves around two words: healthy and delicious. “Our dishes are created using only very fresh and high quality ingredients,” states owner Thomas Ma. For instance, you will never see canned water chestnuts or baby corn; only white meat chicken tenders or flank steak are used when the recipe calls for either chicken or beef; and the highest quality rice vinegar is used. Thomas states, “We try to use healthier vegetables like jicama instead of water chestnuts.” At T.S. Ma, they never serve gloppy sauce thickened with cornstarch. Healthy canola oil is used instead of soybean oil, and in a very interesting twist, you find that in recipes that call for sugar, maple syrup is used.

Former New Yorkers may remember T.S. Ma in Manhattan adjacent to Madison Square Garden in the 80’s. It was in 2006 that Thomas brought this winning proposition to New Jersey, first on Bellevue Avenue in Montclair, and then in 2016 a second NJ location was opened in Wyckoff. His son Chris left Jefferies Group in 2012 to join him in running these very special dining rooms.

are served with a citrus mayo sauce, and are dressed with honey walnuts that are glazed in house and garnished with broccoli. Finally, the Pork Ribs Shanghai Style are like no other Chinese ribs. They are braised in a special pot that cooks the ribs evenly, with a sauce that is marinated right into the ribs. The Shanghai style sauce is a not-too-sweet accompaniment to these tender ribs that are served on a bed of Chinese greens.

A few of the stand out dishes that Thomas and Chris find customers clamoring for are: Shrimp Dumplings—a whole shrimp surrounded by minced shrimp in a dumpling wrapper, which can be either pan fried or steamed, served with a very delicate, on the palate ginger and garlic brown sauce on the side. The Szechuan Pork Wontons are a must order—pork and vegetables enveloped in a wheat flour wrapper served in a ginger, garlic, scallion spicy brown sauce. The combination of ingredients in the Wonton and the sauce create a multi-layered flavor sensation that is simply not to be missed. Try the Crispy Shrimp with Honey Walnuts, a staple in many fancy Chinese restaurants; the lightly fried shrimp

Thomas points out that “T.S. Ma offers many Gluten Free options and is very happy to accommodate special diet requirements.” Thomas and Chris enjoy meeting new people and are especially fond of introducing healthy Chinese Cuisine to newcomers. If you like Chinese food, you owe it to yourself to plan a visit.

If people want to take charge of their health and learn more about how to get well and stay well, I recommend they read one of my books. The Great American Health Hoax explains why, if you are sick with a chronic disease, conventional medicine has little to offer.
